I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Those breeding later generation dogs will need health tested Bernedoodles fit for breeding. The idea being to protect both the health of the dog and the general Bernedoodle breeding standards. Finally, all breeding animals will need to be extensively tested for any evidence of genetic diseases. Demand As we well know by now, when something becomes first popular and then scarce, the price can really shoot up. So location will again come into play here. Another important aspect of supply and demand will be the type of Bernedoodle you are after. First-generation dogs may very well be more widely available than later-generation ones for cost reasons. However, backcrossed dogs may be more desirable due to their higher likelihood of having a low-shed, so-called hypoallergenic coat. This is where you might need to make a few compromises between what you want vs. See Also: Click the image Size The size of the dogs can also have a significant effect on their cost for two main reasons. Firstly, while larger dogs may be more common, smaller ones are generally more desirable for many. This is often just due to how much more convenient it is to have an ity-bity rather than a larger pup about the house and how much easier people presume they are to handle. This will obviously up the price tag for littler Bernies. Also, more work goes into breeding diminutive pups from larger parents while keeping them healthy. This takes a great deal more experience and expertise from the breeder and will also be reflected in the cost. Be very cautious, though, about facilities offering teacup-sized Doods — especially ones from much larger parents such as the Bernese Mountain Dogs. Breeding pups this small could have all kinds of consequences for their health. See Also: Click the image Coat Color Aside from coat type as covered above , strangely, coat color can also significantly impact the cost of a Bernedoodle — as with any other Doodle. Generally speaking, the more colors to be found in their coat, the higher you can expect the price to be. Bernies typically have three distinct shades — black, white, and tan. This already places them in the higher price category. Aside from this, you may also be expected to pay more for Bernedoodles with rarer coat colors than their more regular counterparts. These include red and white, sable, phantom, and merle, among others. Bernies can inherit these, and even more colors besides, from their Poodle parents, who come in a veritable rainbow of hues. This is especially the case with puppies with a higher concentration of Poodle genes. See Also: Click the image Breeder Reputation Finally, with so many scam artists, puppy mills, and bad breeders around which we will take a look at in a minute , ones that have established a solid reputation in the Doodle community can just about name their price for their puppies. You know that you can trust the dogs that come from these places, not just to be happy and healthy but to have excellent temperaments too. Established breeders, with all their expertise, are usually also able to offer potential buyers a whole host of other puppy-related services too. They may have training schools , usually provide early sensory stimulation and socialization , and often can give tons of guidance for handling a new fur baby. These kinds of services are invaluable, especially for newbie owners who might not know quite what to expect from their puppy. Sadly though, bad ones are out there too. The three main types of breeding facilities you may come across out there are: Professional Breeders These are the good guys. The ones with not only the desire to improve the Bernedoodle line by breeding only the best puppies but also with the know-how to do it. They invest a great deal of money in their animals, who are loved, nurtured, and well cared for, and it clearly shows. You can usually spot these sorts of breeders from their online presence, including comprehensive business websites with plenty of details about the dogs. Backyard Breeders These are the not-quite-so-bad guys. Backyard breeders tend to be regular pet owners who decide to make a quick buck through a spot of amateur breeding. These dogs will be cheaper and of a lower quality. Puppy Mills These are definitely the bad guys. Unlike backyard breeders, puppy mills are large-scale operations that are absolutely focused on profit above all else. The facilities will be totally basic — cramped and dirty, and the food will be the cheapest possible option. Puppies from here will undoubtedly be the least expensive, but they will likely have all kinds of health and behavioral issues when you adopt them. So this is certainly something to factor into your decision. These are our top picks for Bernedoodles. See Also: Click the image Obviously, the larger your dog, the more you will be looking at. Treats can be done a little more cheaply if you opt for leftover fruits and veggies, for instance. Professional classes can be a little costly. However, these may be more necessary for newbie owners who are not so familiar with how to handle super smart or larger pups, such as the Bernedoodle. Boarding is something you will also need to think about if you are planning on taking any vacations abroad. Taking your pal along on-at-home trips may be fun, but it will likely be too stressful to get them on a plane. Related Content. Several factors come into play when determining the price you may have to pay for a Bernedoodle. A new puppy requires a lot of gear. What about a small mountain of puppy chew toys? This 12 pack is perfect for active little mouths, has an awesome variety of toys, and is a terrific bargain — it even comes with an IQ treat ball! Here are a few things to consider when researching your Bernedoodle. Color and Size Coat color and size can have a big impact on the cost. Typically Bernedoodles with a tri-color coat and mini Bernadoodles are the most expensive. Generation Type The cost of the Bernedoodle can be affected by the generation or the make-up of the parents used in the specific liter. An F1 first generation Bernedoodle is one where one parent is the Poodle and the other parent is the Bernese Mountain Dog. An F2 is where two F1 dogs are bred together. Coat If the buyer requests a certain coat type, this can cost more money. Generally, expect to pay more for curly-coated dogs. Different coat types will require a slightly different approach to grooming see what I use on my Doodle dog in this article and will display differing shedding tendencies. However, I found this well-recommended book on Amazon that is actually written by someone who is intimately familiar with these dogs. New Breed The fact that Bernedoodles are a fairly new breed has added to the cost. Almost anytime something new comes out on the market, it comes with a higher price tag. This is bound to change with time, but for now, the lack of breeders is one reason these dogs are on the pricey side. When trying to produce Bernedoodles, breeders want to make sure that both parents are healthy. Bernese Mountain Dogs are prone to several health issues , and their life span is only 6 to 9 years. Therefore, it may be difficult to find many healthy Bernese Mountain Dogs, which can drive up the price. Reputable Breeders Breeders who have been in the business longer and raise only high-quality Bernedoodles tend to charge higher prices than someone new to the business. Reputable breeders go to great lengths researching their breeding stock, traveling to see them, and even import them from other countries. High-quality breeding stock can easily fetch 5-figure dollar amounts. Health Screenings Breeders invest a great deal of time and money finding and testing their breeding stock to ensure they are free from genetic disorder and disease. Maintenance Costs Female Bernese Mountain Dogs do not have a high success rate with pregnancy and often require extra care to breed and care for the puppies. They often charge higher prices because of the additional maintenance costs. Geographic Location Bernedoodles generally go for higher prices in larger cities. Therefore, it might be a little more difficult finding quality Bernedoodle breeders and you may need to be open to traveling a bit to get one. Check Their Website Not everybody has a website today, but most businesses do. Are they informative? Do they get back to you right away? What kind of support do they offer after the puppy goes home with you? Check Reviews The internet can be a wealth of good information for people looking for reviews. All you have to do is some research. Visit Their Pups How the puppies and the parents behave is often an indication of how the breeder takes care of the dogs. Bernedoodles can be stubborn dogs that require training and socialization. Are They Responsible Breeders? Responsible breeders truly love that particular breed of dog. They will want to get to know a little about the people buying their pups. If possible, always check out the place where the puppies are born and being raised. The place should be clean, and the breeder should be only breeding Bernadoodle dogs and not several other breeds, which can be an indication of a puppy mill. Knowledge Bernedoodles are a popular dog breed but still relatively new, and you may have many questions about the breed. A quality Bernedoodle breeder is not going to know everything but should be able to answer most, if not all, of your questions. Do you have to give up on your dream? Not necessarily. Check Dog Registries — Check with registries where the Bernedoodle dogs might be registered. Get References — If the breeder is a reputable and quality breeder, he will have no problems providing you with at least two references. This is where Facebook can come in handy too! Visit in person — If possible, avoid telephone conversations over the phone. Ask to meet in person at the place where the dogs are kept. Quality breeders will not only be happy to answer your questions but will expect you to want all the information you can get. Ask to see the parents — Always ask to see the parents of your pup in person. The way the parents behave says a lot about how the puppies will turn out as adults. Develop a relationship — Get to know the breeder as much as possible and develop a good relationship with them so you can always feel free to contact them with any concerns or questions you may have now or in the future. Many times, dedicated breeders are willing to lower their price if they know the dog is going to a loving home and will be well taken care of. I am on the prowl for my fur-ever home now since I was found abandoned at the neighborhood doggie park. I'm not sure what I did that was so bad to just leave me there cuz I'm really a very good girl. They think I'm around 2 years old and weigh in at about 30lbs. I am house trained, calm and obedient. I try my best not to make any extra work for my foster mommy. I absolutely adore kids, they are just the next best thing since milkbones in my book. I do very well with other pups too! My ideal home would have a nice big fenced backyard that comes already stocked with playful siblings hopefully both the 2 and 4 legged variety to chase around stealing. At 30lbs I'm at that great size to accompany an active family on all their outdoor activities. I'd love to go with you on nature hikes or camping in the wilderness. I'd even make a great cheering section if any of 'our' kids are on a sports team! German Shepherd puppy adoption is big business and despite the popularity of the breed, the prices charged by dog rescues for these dogs are extremely high. When you factor in all the costs of food, dog crates, grooming, health checks, and other possible expenses, the price you will pay to adopt a German Shepherd can be several thousand dollars. There is a solution to raising the funds to buy a German Shepherd puppy and that is to raise the funds by selling the puppies! If the German Shepherd puppies for sale in PA are raised by the rescue group then they will pay all the expenses involved and you will only pay a one-time adoption fee. Puppies that come from breeding lines like the German Shepherd, Pomeranian, Saint Bernard, and the Yorkie are not purebred. German Shepherd dogs that come from these other breeds are much healthier than purebred German Shepherd dogs. This is one reason why the rescue group buys dogs because most of the dogs are much healthier. Many of the mixed dogs have had all the necessary vaccinations and booster shots but some may still need to have those booster shots. The breeder who raises the puppies for adoption will give an adorable, healthy puppy to the rescue group. German Shepherd puppies that come from a good breeding line are very calm, obedient, intelligent, and hard-working. This makes them the perfect match for a new family. You will get a wonderful companion that will provide love, affection, companionship, protection, and a faithful, lifelong relationship. German Shepherd mix dogs for sale in PA have an easier time adjusting to life with their owners. These dogs usually have been raised in loving homes and have most likely been around other dogs daily. Any puppies that qualify as a German Shepherd Mix are a cross between a German Shepherd and another dog breed. In a mixed breed, you can get any mix of characteristics in the parent breeds. German Shepherds tend to be strong-willed, intelligent, playful, and loyal. To get a full idea of what to expect in your puppy, be sure to ask the breeder about the other dog breed in the cross and check out the mother dog in-person to get a general idea about size and temperament. On the German Shepherd side, you have an independent dog with high intelligence and a playful spirit. German Shepherds make great family pets and are born protectors. Because of their protective instinct, they can be suspicious of strangers. Socialization early and often can help curb this suspicion and make them more open to new people and situations. German Shepherds also tend to be loving and have a lively personality. The German Shepherd Mix can have any or all of these characteristics plus any characteristics from the other parent breed in the mix. Before buying a German Shepherd Mix puppy and bringing them home, be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed. If the puppies are being family-raised around children, you should be able to get an idea of how they will do in a family setting that includes children. The German Shepherd is a moderately adaptable working dog that was bred to guard, work, and herd. They do not tend to do well in apartments and are best-suited for houses with yards. GSDs prefer to be with their families and do not like to be alone. They also tend to prefer cooler climates as they are sensitive to heat. With a German Shepherd Mix, you could get a moderately adaptable dog that is just like a purebred German Shepherd. You could also end up with a dog that is more like the other parent breed. Talking with the breeder about the other parent breed can give you a good idea of what to expect. German Shepherds can be prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. You will need to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an idea of any other health concerns to be aware of in your German Shepherd Mix. Health screenings, clearances, and the genetic history of the parents can help allay concerns about potential health conditions. On the German Shepherd side, training and obedience classes are highly recommended for novice dog owners. Although GSDs are highly intelligent, pick up on things quickly, and train fairly easily, they can be stubborn with an independent streak. Regardless of the other parent breed in the cross, you should be prepared to enroll in obedience and training classes with your German Shepherd Mix. The experience will be beneficial to both you and your puppy and will also offer some opportunities for socialization. You will still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an understanding of what to expect during the training process. Professional grooming a few times a year and the occasional bath is also recommended. Regardless of the coat type, your German Shepherd Mix will need to have their nails trimmed monthly and their teeth brushed regularly. Not every dog will allow you to do this, so try to get a tooth brushing session in at least a few times a week to reduce tartar buildup. This will help prevent dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Plus, it will help cut down on bad breath! German Shepherds tend to have a high activity level. They were bred to run, herd, guard, and protect, so they are used to working and having a job to do. They are definitely not a lazy dog breed! Be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. You will still want to go in prepared for a high energy dog with the understanding that your German Shepherd Mix puppy may have an activity level closer to the other breed in the cross. If both are high energy dogs breeds, expect to end up with a high energy dog. A German Shepherd is a large dog breed that generally weighs between 55 and 90 pounds. They also usually stand between 22 and 26 inches tall at the shoulders. The other dog breed in the cross could result in a smaller or larger German Shepherd Mix. A German Shepherd generally lives for years. You should be able to expect a similar range in your German Shepherd Mix, but the other dog breed in the cross could affect this range. Getting a healthy and happy puppy is more than worth the investment! These designer dogs are bred with the intent of making them purebred dogs, so some breeders offer multigenerational litters. With such a mix of parent breeds and genes, Australian Labradoodles can vary in their size and looks. They usually have low-shedding, curly fur coats that come in a range of colors and patterns, as well as a medium-to-large build, a long snout, and floppy ears. Their thick coats resemble wool or fleece, giving them a teddy bear look. With the gundog and all-purpose hunting breeds, they are intelligent and hardworking. Exercise Like the parent breeds, Australian Labradoodles love to work. They need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation each day, including a lot of play time. They tend to be calmer than Labradoodles and enjoy time with children and other pets. Image Credit: Josiah Gaulke, Shutterstock Training Australian Labradoodles come from intelligent, highly trainable parent breeds that perform well when they have a job to do. They do best with positive-reinforcement training and early socialization, which is important for preventing dog or people aggression and reactivity. Purebred dogs are often riddled with health problems because of their limited gene pool, but having up to six breeds contributing to the Australian Labradoodle may minimize the risk of inherited disorders compared to purebred dogs. However, it does depend on the health of the parents, and not every breeder is focused on producing healthy offspring. Australian Labradoodles are a great choice for therapy work as well. The original goal of the cross was to produce an alternative to the popular Labradoodle. Though not recognized by breed associations, Goldendoodles have been produced for several generations. Goldendoodles can vary in size, coat color, and coat texture according to their parents. Generally, they have round heads, broad muzzles, a heavily feathered tail, and floppy ears with a long coat with straight, wavy, or curly texture and a range of colors. They come in Standard, Miniature, or Toy variants from the Poodle. Most take after the Golden Retriever side with a friendly, affectionate, and trustworthy personality. They can be high energy and playful, so they make good family pets. Goldendoodles are prone to separation anxiety, however. Because of the gundog lineage, Goldendoodles have natural Retriever instincts. Exercise Goldendoodles were created from two active gundog and water retriever breeds. As a mix, they tend to have high energy and require a lot of physical and mental enrichment to thrive. However, a Goldendoodle raised in a mellow household will usually settle and enjoy more downtime. Both breeds respond well to positive reinforcement and consistency in training. Early socialization and conditioning are important to have a well-adjusted puppy. Some litters end up susceptible to health problems from both parents. Some of the common conditions seen in Goldendoodles include hip dysplasia, Von Willebrand disease, megaesophagus, skin allergies, ear infections, sensitive stomach, and a range of cancers. Image Credit: Megan Betteridge, Shutterstock Suitable For: Goldendoodles are versatile dogs that can thrive in a variety of homes, including family homes with children , with active owners, and in rural environments. Usually fewer colors, most commonly in areas of gold, caramel, apricot or red spectrum. Well suited as therapy dogs because of their approachable nature and ability to make people smile and laugh. Weight Gain Tendency Labradoodles have a tendency to enjoy food to the point of gaining weight and becoming obese. With a healthy diet, they are less prone to uncontrolled weight gain. Here are some fundamental differences: Their work ethic or desire to work is slightly different. The Labrador Retriever is a sold working dog that can continue working long after the work is done. This dog works because he enjoys the work. The Golden Retriever will do the work required because he loves and wants to please his owner but is ready to quit when the owner quits. Their motivation to work is slightly different. Whereas the Golden Retriever works to please the owner, the Labrador Retriever is more treat-motivated. As long as he continues to get treats, he wants to continue doing the job at hand. Labrador Retrievers seem to have a higher energy level and are stronger than the Golden Retrievers. Both dogs are loyal to their family members, but the Labrador Retriever is slightly more reserved and mellow. If a stranger would come into the home, the Labrador Retriever is more likely to stand back in the corner waiting for a bit while the Golden Retriever would rush up to the stranger to be pet. The Labradoodles take a little longer to access the situation and ensure that everything is cool before approaching a strange situation or person. Many owners say that their social skills are probably the most significant difference between the two breeds. Both dogs interact very well with children and other dogs. Temperament Labrador Retrievers are also more forgiving than Golden Retrievers, and this trait often carries on to the Labradoodles and Goldendoodles. The Labrador Retriever, on the other hand, wants to keep on going like the Energizer Bunny. While both dogs interact well with their owners, Golden Retrievers are more sociable with strangers. Goldendoodles interact well with all people in the home, whereas Labradoodles are more dominant with certain family members. Labradoodles s are more territorial than Goldendoodles and also enjoy spending more time outside the home. Labrador Retrievers would be perfectly content staying in the home laying by your feet. These social and temperament traits that are possessed by the Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers can often be found in the Goldendoodles and Labradoodles Size The thing that most affects the size of these dogs is what type and size Poodle they were bred with. Other things can affect the size of the Labradoodle and the Goldendoodle include genetics, size of both parents, birth order, gender, health, and nutrition. Standard Poodles can go from 40 to 80 pounds while Golden Retrievers average 55 to 75 pounds, and Labrador Retrievers go from 55 to 80 pounds. Keeping these figures in mind, you can see that there can be a lot of variances. They both have well-defined bodies. Goldendoodles tend to have longer bodies than Labrador Retrievers, but most breeders claim that the Labs outweigh the Goldens by the time they reach adulthood. Although standard Poodles are the size most commonly used in breeding to create Labradoodles and Goldendoodles, they also use the toy and miniature Poodles. Appearance Both Goldendoodle and Labradoodle dogs are beautiful dogs. When people see them for the first time they often wonder about the breed. The Goldendoodle also has a much fluffier tail. When you go to buy a Goldendoodle or a Labradoodle, the breeder may ask what type of coat you prefer. Wool coat — This coat has a harsh kinky texture typically found on a Poodle. Fleece coat — This coat has a soft wavy texture and is most commonly found on both Labradoodles and Goldendoodles. Color Hair length and consistency is not the only difference between the Labradoodle and the Goldendoodle. Their colors tend to vary quite a bit as well. Labradoodles seem to be born with more color variations than Goldendoodles. Labradoodles may come in colors like chocolate, black, cream, red, white, yellow or a combination coat. Goldendoodles are usually in the areas of gold, caramel, apricot or red spectrum. The Labradoodle tends to shed a little more than the Goldendoodle but is also easier to groom than the Goldendoodle. You will save you time, money, and loads of frustration…take my word for it! Get Your Copy Today! Working Ability Both breeds will make excellent family dogs, but their love of people and willingness to approach strangers often take them out of the running for guarding purposes. This is especially true with Goldendoodles, who will not hesitate to walk up to a stranger and try making a new friend. Goldendoodles are just happy, happy dogs that are always smiling, which is the opposite of what you want in a guard dog. The Labradoodle tends to be more guarded and reserved when it comes to new situations, people or space, and this could be misconstrued as aggression if the dog was not properly socialized. The Labradoodle is considered a much better watchdog because he or she will bark when strangers come to the home, whereas the Goldendoodle seldom barks. Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers have long been known for their ability to hunt and retrieve their prey. These same qualities are passed on to the Labradoodles and Goldendoodles. They love the outdoors and enjoy being around water. Service Dog Ability Both the Goldendoodle and Labradoodle have excellent service dog ability due to their friendliness, intelligence, loyalty and natural temperament. They have the ability to make people smile and laugh. Many people look at Goldendoodles as being clowns and even goofy-looking. Qualities like this are what make them such wonderful therapy dogs. Personality traits like this may be frowned upon for those looking for a guard dog but are highly valued when looking for a therapy dog. They have a natural temperament for it. They have higher intelligence. They have a better work ethic. Intelligent disobedience is when the dog will disobey a command if he or she believes the situation could be dangerous. This type of training is challenging, but many Labrador Retrievers seem to pick it up very quickly. This training ability has made Labradoodles the better choice for seeing-eye dogs, guide dogs and basic service dogs. Another trait that makes Labradoodles better for service dogs is their accepting and loving nature. This trait is vital when it comes time for the trainer to hand over the service animal to a new owner. As intelligent and loyal as German shepherds may be, they have the reputation of being a one-man dog. Labrador Retrievers have all the same wonderful qualities but do not have the one-man dog issue, which can make them better service animals. When their training is done, they are able to transfer their loyalty and affection to the new owner much quicker. This unique ability also helps Labradoodle make effective service animals. This tendency comes from the Labrador Retriever. Approximately one in five Labrador Retrievers carries a genetic mutation that gives them a predisposition to gain weight according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This not only contributes to the dog being overweight but is said to improve their ability to participate in more extended training sessions, especially if the training is food or treat-based. This gene mutation helps the Lab in his training because to be good service animals, they must train often and from an early age. Health Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are both relatively healthy dogs but, like most dogs, they do have certain diseases that they are prone to inheriting due to their breed. These diseases typically come from both sides. Labrador Retrievers are prone to develop: Hip and elbow dysplasia. Labradoodles are often chosen for service dog work. However, Goldendoodles are also very popular for therapy work. Which dog sheds more Labradoodle or Goldendoodle? The higher Poodle genetics makes this generation of Labradoodle to be the most likely not to shed out of all of the first generation makeups. They are also considered to be the most hypoallergenic. Do Labradoodles Goldendoodles bark a lot? Labradoodles are very vocal and communicative canines. In fact, they fall under the mild-barkers category. They usually bark for a reason. Not all Goldendoodles bark, but many do. Some only bark when they are in public due to excitement. Others bark all the time. Both the Labradoodle and the Goldendoodle can be equally amazing companions, love children, and are make great family dogs. Doodles generally tend to suffer from a higher rate of separation anxiety than other dog breeds. Due to their highly sociable traits, they do not do well when left alone for long periods of time. These dogs want and need to be around people. Hershey the Multigen Labradoodle Both are known for their friendly and outgoing nature; Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are sweet-natured and enthusiastic breeds. These dogs thrive on strong, dependable relationships with humans, require moderate attention stimulation, and love human company. Both breeds are very intelligent and generally quite easy to train. As a pet, Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are both obedient, loyal, loving, and affectionate. Neither the Standard-size Labradoodle nor Goldendoodle would be well suited for full-time indoor or apartment living, as they enjoy spending time outdoors, playing games like fetch and tug-of-war, and love taking long walks. These active breeds are always on the go and often quite amusing and entertaining to watch while at play. When properly socialized from a young age, they can get along well with small children and other pets, often making friends with other dogs quickly due to their social nature. Due to their need for human attention and eagerness to please and impress their owners, Labradoodles and Goldendoodles generally respond well to basic training. These bright dogs have the ability to learn to perform almost any task a trainer is willing to take the time to teach them. Big Goldendoodle! The Standard Goldendoodle does tend to be larger than the Standard Labradoodle. Puppies can still fall above or below their projected adult weights, especially when their parents are two different sizes, for example, if one parent is a Mini and one is a standard. Make sure the Poodle in your Doodle is a size you could handle because they might be as tall or taller! Weight is not as important. Such an awesome picture!! When she called, they explained that all the puppies in their program must pass a series of tests to qualify. One of the tests is a stress test, which includes a variety of loud noises, such as honking car horns, back-firing cars, gunshots, screeching brakes, etc. They said most breeds would panic and run at some or all of these kinds of sounds. The Yellow Labs consistently did the best in these stress tests for staying calm and in control and remained the most stable and dependable. This obviously is extremely important to the ultimate owner, who must depend entirely on his dog for his life when he is making his way thru busy traffic. The mixing of poodles with labradors was originally developed to be shed-free Seeing Eye Dogs in Australia this is where and how the whole story of Labradoodles started. The F1 has a higher incidence of shedding, while the higher generations are closer to non-shedding. .The F1 and higher generations also look completely different as well. Most Labradoodle breeders no longer breed the F1 generation Labradoodle due to the higher incidence of shedding, so they are harder to find. Do Labradoodles get curlier as they get older? No, Labradoodles coats do not change from curly to straight or vice versa. There is a puppy coat change, but the coat type will be primarily the same. Do not expect the Labradoodle puppy coat type to change. The Goldendoodle Goldendoodle adult coats can grow 4 to 6 inches long and have a wavy or curly texture. More curl usually equals less shedding, and straighter hair usually means a higher chance of shedding but not always. Conceptually, Golden Retrievers influence the Goldendoodle making them more energetic. They are affectionate and love to be with you and can get so happy to see you they can have a hard time not jumping on you and must be trained not to. They make their decisions well before they decide to come running to you. Goldendoodles can also be more mouthy than Labradoodles. They will want to taste you! Their natural desire to retrieve may keep their mouths occupied, but putting your thumb in their mouth can also do the trick with some of the more stubborn puppies or just by doing a high pitch yelp whenever their teeth touch your skin. This is especially useful with younger puppies. I refer to the Goldendoodle as a very zestful and happy-with-life kind of dog. Both doodles share similar temperaments smart, family-friendly, and easily-trained. Both doodles come in various sizes mini, medium, and standard and many colors. Both are loyal, loving family members. As for which doodle would work best for you… we find that people who are loyal to labrador retrievers generally want a Labradoodle, and folks who have grown up with golden retrievers typically want a Goldendoodle. The great thing is you get to choose! In intelligence and allergy friendliness, both are about par. Both are half retrievers and half poodle, intelligent and moderately active dogs. Look up and read the breed descriptions for each of the parent breeds, and then believe their breed descriptions. Neither will be a low-energy lapdog. For an insightful article on the differences between a Goldendoodle and a Labradoodle in training and temperament, please read the article by Gwendy Joysen, author of The Balanced Canine — Link to Article Me and my Doods at the dog park. .Do NOT get a Doodle mixed with a dog from a working-class bloodline unless you are very active. Do NOT let the dog become overweight. This is vital with these breeds. Almost all Goldens and Labs I see in public are usually overweight. A correct specimen is rarely over 75 pounds for a large male unless the dog is oversized or fat. Feed high-quality dog food. Clean the ears regularly — both breeds tend towards ear issues and food and skin allergies. Groom them regularly. The only drawback about owning a non-shedding dog is their high-maintenance coats it will just continue to grow and then eventually mat if not properly cared for. Talk to your groomer about an appropriate grooming schedule. Health Concerns in both breeds: As a hybrid cross, they grow healthier and live longer than either parent line. The only genetic diseases they can be prone to would be those shared by both parent breeds. The Goldendoodle and Labradoodle both tend to be a rather healthy dog, but Poodles, Labrador Retrievers, and Golden Retrievers are all susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia. They can also suffer from a number of inheritable eye disorders, so it is important that annual CERF Canine Eye Registration Foundation exams are performed before breeding. Both are prone to ear infections and yeast infections in the ears from moisture in the ears. It is important to make sure to keep them dry. The F1b Generation in the Labradoodle is much curlier and less likely to shed. There are however straighter F1b Labradoodles as well. So it all depends on what you like in regards to curl and how much grooming your willing to pay for. Allergy Friendly? Yes, First Generation Goldendoodles and Labradoodles have proven to live successfully with most families with mild dog allergies. Just remember, the more Poodle in your Doodle the better they will be for shedding and allergie concerns. The most obvious answer is that the Goldendoodle is the result of breeding a Golden Retriever with a Poodle while the Labradoodle is the result of breeding a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. Blue Ridge Goldendoodles does not breed Labradoodles, however, we want you to be able to compare the two breeds. When it comes to choosing between the two, it really comes down to what you want in a dog. They tend to be more calm than the Labradoodle when taken into the hospital or nursing home. Both dogs are good choices when it comes to serving as guide dogs, although the Labradoodle might have a slight edge. Both dogs are loyal to their masters and are extremely friendly, but sometimes the Labradoodle will be apprehensive about entering a new space, such as your home. They will tend to check things out thoroughly before they settle in. The Goldendoodle, on the other hand, feels right at home wherever he is. To enhance this innate sense of trust and balance, Blue Ridge Goldendoodles makes it their priority to continually breed for the best possible temperament. When it comes to using the dogs for working, the Labradoodle is generally stronger than the Goldendoodle. If the dog might be needed to pull a load or be trained for other physical service, the Labradoodle would generally be the better choice. When it comes to looks and grooming, the Goldendoodle will typically have hair that is much longer than the Labradoodle. If you base your decision on the quality of the coat and the general beauty of the dog, you might give more consideration to purchasing a Goldendoodle. Speaking of coats, both dogs are categorized according to their coat with regard to potential shedding. In either dog, those with an F1 coat might tend to shed a little more than those with an F1B coat. One final difference to note is that the Labradoodle tends to weigh more than a comparable sized Goldendoodle. If you are specifically looking for the more playful and active dog, the Goldendoodle generally fits the bill. So, the question of Labradoodles vs Goldendoodles simply boils down to what you want in a dog and the purpose they will serve in your life. Both dogs are smart and easy to train. They are also similar in size, and the variety of sizes that are available. They are also both loving, loyal and make great family members. Just remember that either type will require plenty of exercise and play time. Blue Ridge Goldendoodles will be happy to answer any questions you might have about Goldendoodles in general or more specifically about the Goldendoodle puppies we breed. They were originally bred to be service dogs and not a 'designer' pet. The Labradoodle breed started with a request over thirty years ago by a family needing a seeing eye dog but who also had a family member with asthma. After some research and years of breeding by leading service dog breeders, Tegan Park and Rutland Manor in Australia, the Australian Labradoodle was born. Our top goal is excellent health, fantastic temperament, and service qualities. Just like any other breed that becomes popular, though, some breeders have started breeding for the popularity of these dogs and not for the benefit of the breed itself. So here's how to make sure you're getting the dog you want. Here are some helpful tips to understand what a breeder means when they are using these phrases. The multi-generation Australian Labradoodle, which is the original Labradoodle, has a foundation stock including six different parent breeds. These dogs were developed in Australia, and hence the "Australian" in the name of the dogs. This was a breed that was developed with goals in mind for a low shedding service dog, not a designer dog. The multi-generation Labradoodle has only poodle and lab in its heritage. It does not include the other parent breeds that were originally used by the creators of the breed. These have been primarily developed later in the U. These dogs tend to shed their coat since they are more closely related to the Labrador and often have a wire hair look to them. The "Back Cross" or "F1B" is a dog from an F1 see above mated back to a poodle usually for coat correction. These dogs have not had the multiple generations of Labradoodle mated with another Labradoodle nor the addition of Australian Labradoodle foundation stock or multiple parent breeds. With 17 years of experience in breeding Australian Labradoodles, we pride ourselves on selecting only the best dogs for our breeding program, which in turn ensures that we are producing the best puppies imaginable. This helps desensitize your puppy to the sounds of life traffic, fireworks, outdoor machinery, crying baby, misc appliances, automobiles, etc. We start crate training at 5 weeks with a soothing heartbeat snuggle puppy to comfort them as they transition to sleeping alone and all the puppies love it and sleep better with minimal crying. We add nutrients and special additives for puppies to their drinking water. We add probiotics to their food for a healthy GI tract and immune system. We make special liver water, gruel, with puppy supplements, dog milk formula to their nutritionally dense food to support eyes, ear, bone, joint, coat and heart health. We expose your puppy to sunlight daily on the deck right outside the puppy nursery area. There is always a plush bedding for their cozy comfort in their play areas for those impromptu naps puppies love. Our puppies are held and played with while being bathed and exposed to water, in our walk-in shower, which builds a positive experience, with water, for their lifetime. Bath time is with a human sitting in this large shower allowing plenty of space for your puppy too roam around and enjoy water in a nurturing experience. The puppies love it instead of being in a sink with a dry human just washing them. Water is actual playtime while they get clean and build positive experiences with being wet. There are many other creative ways to provide your Poodle with proper physical activity. As long as you have some time, energy, and imagination, you should be able to satisfy his body. Here are some of my best ideas to exercise and have fun together simultaneously. If you have more money than time, toys can be an excellent idea to keep your dog happy and healthy. Poodles are generally very playful and energetic, so investing in objects designed to meet their exercise requirements is a no-brainer. But there are many other great options you should consider to help your Poodle maintain an active lifestyle. Flirt Pole. Whether you want to play in your living room, at the dog park, or in your backyard, the Flirt Pole can help you tire him out in relatively small areas. This toy is the perfect solution to satisfy your Poodle both physically and mentally. Interactive Ball. This interactive ball will encourage your dog to exercise and stimulate him mentally at the same time. Made from durable material, the Babble Ball can also stand up to rough play. Automatic Ball Launcher. As I already told you, fetch is an excellent activity to provide your Poodle with proper exercise. The iFetch company has developed an interactive ball launcher to let your dog play on his own. You only have to teach him how to retrieve and put the ball in the machine. For Miniature and Toy Poodles, the smaller model may be more appropriate for their size. Mind enrichment is also essential to keep your dog healthy and happy. The Poodle is active and intelligent, so you have to satisfy his body as well as his brain. Training is one of the best ways to provide dogs with proper mental stimulation. Learning new skills regularly will not only challenge their minds. Another great idea to provide your Poodle with mental exercise is with challenging games and toys. For example, dog puzzles such as the Nina Ottosson Brick Toy can keep him busy for long periods. Besides toys, teaching him how to play the shell game can be very efficient to stimulate his mind. Indeed, scent work can be an excellent source of mental stimulation. Letting your Poodle work for his food is also great for mind enrichment. To make it simple, physical activity and mental stimulation are essential for their happiness and well-being. Another potential problem caused by the lack of exercise is obesity. An overweight dog can be prone to many other health conditions. Overall, a tired dog is a good and happy dog. So you must understand how much exercise your Poodle needs. Depression Symptoms. Poodle Exercise Requirements Overview Exercise plays a crucial role in a dog's overall health and can even extend a dog's life span. Offering proper exercise goes way beyond taking a Poodle out for a walk now and again. This section will make sure that you know how to find the right balance of activity for a Poodle of each variety Toy, Miniature and Standard and of any age. We will go over: How your Poodle will benefit from scheduled activity What type of exercise is best for this breed, for each size variety Exercise requirements for all stages of a Poodle's life How to overcome the most common reasons for not exercising your dog Alternative activities you can do with your puppy or dog 6 Top Exercise Tips Why Exercise is So Important When a Poodle receives enough proper exercise, the benefits are enormous. Can help slow the development of arthritis Can increase life span, as diet, exercise, dental care and living conditions are the top 4 elements that affect how long a dog lives. In many cases, just sticking to a walking schedule can combat some of the most difficult behavioral problems. For each of these elements, it is simply a matter of allowing a Poodle to release built-up energy and frustration in a healthy way. If exercise is done randomly and without structure, you won't see much improvement. Destructive behavior - Without regular release of energy via healthy, purposeful activity, a Poodle of any age may instead focus his energy on chewing, digging, scratching or other destructive behaviors. Barking - One of the main causes of excessive barking is frustration and exercise can help eliminate this element. Attention seeking behavior - Dogs that miss out on regular one-on-one time with their owners can end up constantly seeking attention. However, when this need is met, the dog can relax at home, knowing that another session is due to happen soon. It can also lead improvements in: Sleep - Dogs that routinely exercise sleep better at night, both in how long they sleep and how much REM deep sleep they receive. Just a slight case of sleep deprivation that snowballs as the days and weeks pass by can cause all sorts of behavioral issues. This can be resolved with proper exercise. Overall mood - With tension and frustration released in a healthy way, half the battle is done. The other part is mental stimulation.Dogs are happier when they routinely can 'be dogs'; they are happiest when they can smell scents and see sights other than what is inside the house. This creates more of a calm, relaxed mood when indoors. Social Health - An often overlooked yet important part of a Poodle having the right amount of exercise is how it will improve his ability to be well-socialized. When done correctly, regular exercise will: Teach socialization- One of the most crucial aspects of raising a dog to be tolerable of other animals, people and situations is to expose him to the outside world on a regular basis. Many owners of Poodles that act hyper toward cars, dogs and people will avoid taking the Poodle out for a walk; yet this is the very thing that will lead to the Poodle learning to behave more ahead. In time, regular outdoor activity will allow a dog to gain the experience needed to have self-confidence while out and about. This is particularly true when you use this time to work on Heeling techniques. Regular walks with you gives your Poodle a 'job' and taking this on as a team each day can greatly improve the relationship between owner and dog. Just as you make sure that your Poodle eats super healthy foods, you puppy proof the house to keep him safe, you brush his teeth to prevent tooth decay and you work hard to keep him well-groomed… exercise should be a non-negotiable element of caring for your Poodle. The Best Exercise for a Poodle While quick bouts of energy filled activity like playing fetch does have its place, for daily exercise, walking your Poodle is the way to go. This holds true for tiny toy Poodles, medium sized Minis and large Standards. It is the best type of exercise for this breed for several reasons: 1 It is low impact. When your Poodle will be performing an action daily and essentially forever, you want that activity to offer all of the benefits without putting undue stress on the body. Repeated strenuous exercise puts stress on the joints, overtaxes muscles and can cause injury. Once you fall into a routine of walking your Poodle often enough and for long enough periods of time more ahead , his cardiovascular health, stamina and muscle strength will gradually improve… as this happens, walking speed can be incrementally increased so that your Poodle receives the same amount of body conditioning. The only things that you will need is a leash and harness more ahead and some patience if your Poodle needs some practice to keep his behavior in line more ahead. Also, with few exceptions, you can walk a dog during any season we will discuss winter, rain, heat, etc. In other words, while you may be walking very slowly, if your toy Poodle is trotting along beside you at a moderate pace, your dog will be receiving moderately challenging exercise in comparison to your stroll. Scarlett, 2 years old Photo courtesy of Dorothy How Much Exercise a Poodle Needs Puppies - For toys and miniatures under 1 year old and standards under 18 months old, owners must carefully schedule exercise times. Offering quick bouts of outdoor walking is a great way to for the puppy to discharge their abundant energy. That being said, greatly exceeding exercise limits for puppies can be detrimental to their growth. During the first year for toys and miniature Poodles and until about 18 months old for standard Poodles , the bones are still forming and growing. At the end of all major bones are growth plates; these are soft areas that contain rapidly dividing cells that are instrumental in allowing the bones to develop and grow longer as the Poodle pup matures from puppy to adult. Once a Poodle is done with puberty and is officially an adult dog that is done growing, the plates harden and calcify. Until that time, over-exercise can cause injury to this soft bone tissue and interfere with normal bone growth. So, you'll want to find a balance of enough walks, for the proper duration, to allow the pup to release energy and start becoming socialized to the world, yet be careful to not exercise your Poodle puppy to such an extent that it could possibly harm those growth plates. Do keep in mind that normal play in the house, etc. Over-exercise relates to repetitive actions such as running, walking briskly, etc. You just never want to push a young puppy into activity that puts stress on the body and raises the heartbeat if he is not up to it. In looking at these guidelines, we must remember that the duration is the same, no matter the size of the dog. This is because it is the pace at which the dog moves that equates a state of exercise. Toys will trot and standard Poodles will trot, and it is the owner that will need to adjust the pace at which they walk to keep the dog going briskly. A good rule of thumb is: 5 minutes per day, for each month of age. Toys and minis will at this point, move ahead to adult exercise requirements. You'll want to go at a moderate pace that is not overwhelming. Young puppies are only starting to learn about how to walk on leash and it can take some time for them to focus on proper heeling. Ahead, we'll dive into tips to making walking a more pleasant experience coming up. Adults - An adult Poodle in his prime, 1 year old toys or 2 years old standards to 7 years old, should have 60 minutes of exercise per day. Do keep in mind that no matter how active a dog appears while inside the home, this does not decrease the amount of time that the dog should be walked. There will be days that your schedule simply does not allow this or days when weather is so severe that you'll need to offer alternatives; however those should be the exceptions. Most Poodles do best with those 60 minutes split up into two 30 minute or three 20 minute sessions. We recommend: Morning - If you will be leaving for the day, it's a good idea to exercise your Poodle before you leave. Early evening - When you arrive back home, the two most important things to do will be to bring your Poodle to the bathroom area outside and then take him for a walk to release the built up tension that developed while the dog was home alone. Two hours later - Once dinner has been served, some household chores have been done and you are thinking about possibly relaxing for the night, this can be a great time to go for the 3rd and last walk of the day, should you decide to do 3 walks per day instead of 2. While you won't want to exercise your Poodle right before bedtime, heading out for a quick jaunt about 2 hours before the expected sleep time can help your dog calm down and relax as the family settles in for the night. Scotland, 10 months old Photo courtesy of Marlyn Seniors - Do not make the mistake of assuming that an older dog doesn't need exercise. Unless a senior Poodle has health conditions that prohibit him from exercising, you'll want to continue with daily walks. Some owners feel that a senior Poodle is more than content resting around the house. And while seniors are often complacent…they've seen it all and have done it all… and not much may excite them… Being out in the fresh air and stretching their legs can put a little pep in another wise ho-hum step. Regular light exercise can relieve joint discomfort that is common with older dogs, helps the senior dog maintain muscle mass and offers all of the benefits that it does with a senior dog's younger counterparts. Osteoarthritis is not uncommon for senior Poodle; though light exercise can often help alleviate symptoms and this will be something that you'll want to speak with the vet about. You'll want to monitor the older dog to see how he deals with duration, cutting back as needed or slowing down the pace. Health Exceptions - There are some health conditions , of course, that will necessitate a cease in exercise and others that require certain exercise as part of the treatment program. A good example of this is luxating patella slipped kneecap. During recovery, strict bed rest is often prescribed along with medications to reduce swelling and help with pain. However, afterward many vets will suggest strengthening exercises, most notably walking the dog uphill, to help build muscles that surround the knees. Always check with your Poodle's vet during and after any health issue for exercise restrictions and instructions. Pregnancy - In general, healthy pregnant Poodles should be taken for walks and exercised as normal up until the last week of pregnancy. Easy yet consistent exercise during pregnancy helps a female dog stay well-toned which is believed to help with labor and delivery. In most cases, exercise can gradually resume 2 to 3 weeks after giving birth. Depending on the age and size of your Poodle, this may simply be a casual stroll for you. With toy Poodles, do not expect to get in your cardio while walking the dog however, the fresh air, sunshine and movement will be beneficial to you as well… studies show that time NOT spent sitting is as important as exercising and that walking slow is much better than being sedentary. Take note of how your dog's legs are moving… He should be at a trot, with a short stride. Overcoming Reasons for Not Walking Your Poodle There are quite a few reasons why owners may be reluctant to take their Poodle out for regular exercise. Here we will discuss some of these concerns and how to deal with them. However, avoiding walks will not help resolve the issue. Many dogs will bark madly at anything that's within their line of sight… people, other dogs, cars, birds, squirrels, etc. The key to all of this is that a dog reacts that way when the element is intriguing or if it gives the dog concern. And both of those attitudes will fade more and more as the dog is exposed to the elements. If you've ever seen a dog barking like mad when being walked, if you could fast forward 6 months and the owner consistently kept taking the dog out along the same route that whole time , you'd see a very different dog. That dog would be socialized to every aspect of the outside world and those perceived threats would no longer cause alarm. The best thing to do is to ignore the barking and your neighbors that are giving you funny looks and with your Poodle safely on a harness not a collar and the leash kept short, keep walking at the set pace. Walk with determination and without pause, no matter how hyper your dog acts.Any time that the barking stops for even just a count of 5 if it is severe , give enthusiastic praise while simultaneously reaching into your pocket to dispense a small treat as you continue on the path. Exercising in hot, humid weather is certainly a concern for this breed and for all dogs. However, with some planning, you can continue to make sure that your Poodle stays active enough during the summertime. Here are some tips: Protect the paws from hot pavement. Far too many dogs have their paws scalded by hot pavement and this can easily be fixed by either using a super high quality paw wax that will create a layer of protection or by placing comfortable doggie shoes on your Poodle. Protect the nose from sunburn this can happen within 20 minutes with direct sun which can lead to peeling. Use a quality nose balm. Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day. Even on exceedingly hot days, early morning and then again right before sunset, the temperature can often be in the 70's or low 80's which is tolerable. Not to mention, the sun's rays will not be as strong. Bring along water and plan one break. At just about the halfway point, take a break preferably in the shade. During the break, offer a good amount of cool water to your Poodle a canine travel water container works well… the cover works as a bowl and you can place a couple of ice cubes in the insulated thermos to keep the water cold. Do always use caution; if you feel it is just too hot out to safely walk your Poodle, look to alternative activities more ahead. While there are exceptions, walks during the winter can be doable if you plan ahead. For 'normal' winter days, here are some tips: Protect the paws from winter elements. Use a quality paw wax or slip on no-skid canine booties. Dress appropriately. This is important advice for both you and your Poodle. When an owner is freezing and miserable, they will be much more likely to rush the walk, take a short cut or skip it all together by rushing back inside after the dog goes to the bathroom. If you bundle up we're talking hat, scarf, thick winter coat, gloves and durable water-proof boots , you'll be much more apt to stick with your Poodle's exercise program. Likewise, particular for toy Poodles, owners often need to take steps to help the dog stay warm. A thick lined vest, hoodie, coat or sweater will help your toy Poodle keep his core body temperature warm and toasty. Sophie, 9 months old Photo courtesy of June Nelligan Protect the nose - Cold air and whipping chilly winds can quickly cause a chapped nose. Be pro-active in protecting your Poodle's nose before chapping happens. Use a dab of quality nose butter. Depending on the weather, and the safety of the road conditions, you may need to take a shorter route or limit the time spent outdoors. Of course, during blizzards or a severe weather event, staying inside is the safe option. While some dogs are super active in the house, most do need to have scheduled walks. When veterinarians suggest exercise guidelines, this is taking into account that a dog is going to be moving about the house. By heading outside, you will accomplish many things: You'll know that your dog is meeting the requirements of up to an hour of exercise per day. It is also an opportunity to socialize your dog, work on heeling and spend quality time together. Alternative Activities Maybe it is pouring cats and dogs outside, a blizzard is blowing in, or it's degrees out… no matter what may be the case, you may be looking for ways to keep your Poodle active if a walk is out of the question. Here are some tips: 1 Summer Tips: If it is the summer heat that is getting in the way, setting up a kiddie pool in a shaded area of the yard can be just the trick to get a dog moving. As with most activities, your enthusiasm will play a role in how much fun your Poodle has. Another great option is to set up a sprinkler. Most dogs love the thrill of chasing after osculating water and this can be a great way to offer a bit of cardio in the summer. Lastly, swimming is a great exercise that puts very limited stress on the body… However, do keep in mind that not all Poodles automatically know how to swim well. While the Poodle was bred to be a water dog, retrieving fowl from lakes and ponds, that was quite a while ago and today's modern Poodle may need practice to feel comfortable in water. Stay super close to your dog … and using a canine life vest is always a good idea. After swimming, be sure to shampoo and rinse the coat well, as any chlorine residue can cause excessive dryness as well as discoloration of the coat. Make it more challenging as your Poodle catches on, following him about the house to keep him on track and keep him moving. For fetch, all you need is a long hallway and a ball. As we mentioned above, your attitude and level of eagerness will play a huge role in how receptive your Poodle is and how much energy the dog puts into playing. Top 6 Exercise Tips 1 Make a schedule. Life can be exceedingly busy and there will be times that you come home exhausted and see your Poodle is perfectly content cuddling on the sofa with you while you watch TV. However, when you have times blocked off for taking your Poodle out for walks, it's easier to stick with the program. Maybe your Poodle behaves just fine no pent-up energy and is more than happy to hang around the house… so why bother? Exercise is important for 'now' and for 'later'. Every session works toward building a stronger, healthier dog. These short bouts of activity can be training times as well. Whether it is to get your Poodle so used to other dogs that he learns to calm down… or you want to gradually get him to no longer fear traffic… or you want to teach the "Heel' command until your Poodle marches like a little trooper by your side… Make each walk have more meaning by working toward a goal together. Teaka, 4 years old Photo courtesy of Rolande and Dan 4 Assess and adjust. Throughout your Poodle's life, his exercise requirements will change. As he builds endurance, you may need to pick up the pace. If the weather is hotter than you expected, you may need to cut the walk short and schedule it for later in the day. As a senior, he may need 3 shorter walks as opposed to two longer ones. Always be mindful of how your dog is handling the activity and make adjustments as needed. It cannot be overstated how vital it is to have your Poodle wearing a harness any time that he is on leash. If a leash is connected to the collar, this places stress on the neck which can cause injury, including collapsed trachea. This is especially true for toy Poodles, though it does apply for miniatures and standards as well. Not only do you have the weight of the leash, there is the element that if the puppy or dog jumps to the side, runs ahead, gets wounded up in the leash, etc. You will also find that it is much easier to control a Poodle when he is wearing a harness, which makes walking a more pleasant experience. Particularly relevant when house training , it's never a good idea to let a Poodle pee and poo along the way when you could have had the dog use the designated bathroom area first. When you return home, allow your Poodle another opportunity to pee and poo in the bathroom area before being brought back into the house. A: As long as you bring your Poodle for regular walks and are making sure that he meets the exercise requirements for this breed, there is nothing wrong at all with having your dog in a stroller. Just like a car seat or a bicycle basket, strollers or slings are another form of safety and in this case, you are the mode of transportation. Q: I really wanted to start teaching my Poodle puppy how to navigate obstacles and weave poles, but I've heard that puppies shouldn't be exercised too much. Would this be harmful? A: It is true that too much exercise is not good for puppies; however this has gotten really exaggerated by some sources. Puppies are naturally very active and this is a good thing! Being sedentary is not advantageous for any dog, of any age. The only type of over-exercise that interferes with growth plates is severe exertion that would cause the puppy to pant and really struggle to keep up…. Exercise that taxes the body and puts strain on the dog. And this would have to occur on a regular basis to cause a problem. Normally playing and running about the house is expected and helps a puppy grow up healthy. Just do not push the pup to do more than he shows enthusiasm for, taking breaks or calling 'time' after 20 minutes or so. By the way, teaching weave pole obstacles is a great idea and can be super fun for both of you. What do you think about canine treadmills for exercise? A: These are, mostly, used for physical therapy and some large breed dogs may do well with treadmills, especially if they are overweight and need some vet-directed additional exercise. However, these can be very expensive and are not a good substitute for one-on-one play with your Poodle. And if you must stay indoors on many days, playing fetch or other games that offers your dog interaction with you will be much better for his mood than walking on the machine. As a final note, if this were to be used, we'd suggest extreme close supervision as injury would be a top concern. Q: What, exactly, should my reaction and my action be when my Poodle barks like a madman at other dogs when we're out for a walk? A: The first thing to keep in mind is why a dog does this. Imagine that you spent your days surrounded with only dogs… no humans at all, just canines. Then as a brief respite, each day for 20 minutes, you are let out into the world to exercise and during that time you actually get to see other people. BUT, you are not allowed to interact with them. You are instructed to keep walking and ignore them. Would you go a bit nuts after a while? So, the point of this that many owners need to remember, is that a dog will bark at other dogs out of frustration. Many times, this is not an aggressive maneuver at all and it does not mean that the barking dog is misbehaving. It can often be resolved by just allowing your dog to meet the other dog. If your Poodle did nip, that would then be another topic. But you'll never know how he does with other dogs, unless you give him chances with a variety of dogs and allow him to learn to socialize while out for his daily walk. We'd suggest calling out to the other owner with a friendly, "Hi, do you mind if my dog says hello to your dog? At that point, allow the dogs to be dogs. Without interference, they should be allowed to sniff each other. Yes, it will be the rear ends. That is where their scent glands are located and this relays information back and forth regarding: health status, mood and gender. In some cases, the dogs will then back away, which is your cue to thank that owner and continue on your way…. As long as the other person doesn't mind, a short bout of playing is just fine and will allow your Poodle an opportunity to learn canine socializing. Do always keep a close eye on your dog, with the leash in hand, ready to pull him toward you should the other dog get too rough another reason why a harness is the better choice over a collar when on leash. The right exercise for a puppy is different from what would best suit an adult dog or senior dog. Over exercised dog symptoms Poodles can go hard and keep going, often not knowing when to stop. With any dog, it is possible to over-exercise them, especially in hot weather. It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a dog that has overdone it. Poodle Exercise Requirements There are three main types of exercise and activity you must provide your Poodle every day. Daily walk 2. Purposeful Activity and Play see Poodle exercise ideas below 3. Mental stimulation Poodle Walking Requirements A Poodle requires a daily walk of between 20 — 60 minutes at a comfortable but brisk pace for them depending on whether they are a Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle. As many Poodles have a good level of stamina they can go for much longer distances if you wish. By observing your Poodle you can assess how long of a walk they need. If they are panting excessively, are falling behind, or stop and lay down they have probably had enough. It is probably a good idea to end the walk. If they are happily trotting along you can choose to walk a bit further. This can be a walk on a leash around the block or can be off leash exploring at the local park. The daily walk is not only a good way to release some pent up energy, but is also a good opportunity for training and is great for building your bond with each other. It also provides mental stimulation by way of the sights, sounds and smells they come across and social interaction with other dogs you meet along the way. A short daily walk is more beneficial that nothing all week with a long walk at the weekend. If you prefer you can take your Poodle for two shorter walks instead. Obviously, every dog is an individual even if they are the same breed. For a puppy or a senior dog, the exercise requirements will be different. See below for a guideline for puppy exercise and senior dog exercise. Purposeful Activity and Play In addition to one or two walks a day it is important to provide other activities that can help burn pent up energy and provide enrichment for your Poodle. This can include playing with toys and playing games with your dog. Play games There are countless fun games that you can play with your dog. Chew Toys Chewing is a natural instinct for dogs and has many benefits including keeping them busy and occupying and stimulating their minds. When a dog chews it releases endorphins to the brain giving them a natural calming and good feeling. To learn more about the benefits of and the best chew toys see here. Dog toys that move on their own There are many dog toys that rattle, roll and move about by themselves. These are ideal for your Cockapoo to get them having fun and active play. Play with other dogs Provide the opportunity for your Poodle to play with other dogs. This is not only great to burn energy and stimulate their mind, but teaches them important social skills. Not all Poodles are dog-friendly, so ensure yours is to prevent the possibility of fighting. Tug of War A firm favorite of many dogs. Make them crouch and pull back to use extra energy. Ensure that this is a controlled game and they release when you want them to. Also, a great way to build muscle and strength. Swimming Many Poodles are keen swimmers, particularly Standard Poodles. Swimming is a great exercise for a Poodle as it burns energy and uses all the muscles groups, in particular, the front legs and shoulders. It is a good exercise for dogs recovering from injury. For more on swimming exercise for dogs see here. Stair Walking A good energy burner if you have stairs in your home. Have them return down the stairs at a slower pace to avoid injury. Walking up stairs or a hill strengthens the rear legs as the full body weight of your dog is on each leg as the step. As they descend the stairs they are using the opposing muscles for stability. For more on stair exercise for dogs see here. Backyard agility Set up an agility or obstacle course in your backyard. Poodles are great agility dogs. You can use items you have around the home, build your own agility or you can get reasonably priced agility sets on Amazon. You can include tasks such as the weave, hurdle jumps, tunnels or jumping through hoops or a platform to jump on and stay. Fetch Playing Fetch with your Poodle is another fantastic way to burn pent-up energy. Poodles are generally ball or toy crazy and can play this for hundreds of throws. A great alternative is to use an Automatic Ball Launcher so your dog can play Fetch by themselves. As the Poodle is intelligent and highly trainable as long as you focus their attention they learn to use this quickly. However, it is a good idea to provide other activities that stimulate the mind. Mental exercise can burn as much energy as physical exercise. Many dog behavior problems are a direct result of boredom. Kong toys which you stuff with food and treats work in much the same way. Puzzle toys are great for times when your dog is home alone. A popular game that involves learning is to teach them the names of their toys. Dogs can learn hundreds of words and names. Food enrichment Turn mealtimes into an opportunity for your Poodle to get a mental challenge and enrichment. Instead of feeding them from a bowl, give them activities that require them to work for their food. To learn more about feeding enrichment for dogs see here. To learn more about environmental enrichment for dogs see here. How much should you exercise a Poodle puppy The exercise suggestions above relate to a healthy adult Poodle. The exercise needs of a puppy are quite different. With puppies, their bones, muscle, and joints are still growing and developing. Toy and Miniature Poodles are fully grown by about 1 year of age. For Standard Poodles, they may still be growing for up to 18 months. Overly strenuous walks are not necessary and in fact, could possibly cause harm. An activity that is high impact on the joints should also be avoided The best exercise for a young puppy is free play with age-appropriate toys. Socializing with other puppies or friendly adult dogs is a great way to burn some of that puppy energy along with teaching them the social skills they need. As your Poodle puppy gets older you can take them for short informal walks allowing them to sniff and explore and get used to being on a leash. Check with your vet when it is alright to venture out to the park or street. The general rule of thumb for walking a puppy is around 5 minutes for every month of age. So, for example for a 4-month-old puppy, a walk of 15 minutes to 20 minutes is enough. Monitor your Poodle puppy on the walk for signs such as lagging behind, lying down or panting. End the walk if they seem too tired. Mental stimulation is important for puppies and can tire them just as much as physical activity. For more on mental stimulation for puppies see here. However, it is still important that they remain reasonably active to keep their joints and muscles mobile and to manage their weight. It is also important for an older dog to maintain muscle strength and mobility. This aids in protecting and supporting their aging joints and tendons. This video shows some simple and good exercises to help maintain your older dogs body. Many dogs develop arthritis as they age. Exercise for them becomes a balancing act. It is important to keep their joints mobile and manage weight, but too much can make them sore. In Summary All of the Poodle sizes are a moderate to high energy dog and require a least 30 to 60 minutes of exercise daily to keep them healthy and prevent boredom. This daily activity should include a daily walk along with some purposeful activity and play. It is also crucial that they receive mental stimulation and enrichment to challenge their active minds and prevent boredom. Mental exercise can tire a dog just as much as physical activity. Let us know in the comments how much exercise and what types of activity you do with your Poodle and whether that are a Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle. This dog breed is extremely popular due to its looks, lack of shedding, and hypoallergenic claim. No dog is truly hypoallergenic. One of the most crucial parts of keeping a Poodle happy and healthy is ensuring they are getting enough exercise each day. Poodles require up to 60 minutes of exercise per day. Proper Exercise When exercising your Poodle you need to keep a few things in mind. The activity needs to have a duration. You also want a little exertion in the mix. If you and your Poodle are taking a walk, which is one of the best exercises for the breed, then keep up a brisk pace that helps them burn off a bit of energy. Exercise time should be broken up into minute or minute intervals throughout the day according to their age and needs. Just like children, your Poodle grows and changes which means their exercise needs to change with them. They are also full of energy. While your puppy is growing, they need exercise to dispel this energy and avoid becoming too rambunctious. Breaking up exercise into minute intervals is great for young pups. Taking a nice walk helps them get used to the world around them, the leash , and being with you. The important thing to remember with Poodles at this age, however, is that they are still growing. Let your pup play and rest as they need to. A good rule of thumb when determining how much time you should walk your puppy is to use 5-minute intervals per month of age. A 3-month-old puppy would walk for 15 minutes a day. A 4-month puppy would walk for minutes and so on. You can even break the walks into smaller intervals while your puppy is growing into the routine. By the time they are considered an adult, they will be on the right track to getting their minutes of exercise each day. It should be broken up into timed intervals throughout the day. Time guide of how much exercise your puppy needs: 3 months — 15 minutes.

These are truly loyal dogs who bond strongly with their family and love to be around them. Their coat needs little maintenance Remember that dense double coat I mentioned earlier? The Goberian still needs groomingtwice a week for 5 minutes. This will remove loose hairs and keep her coat looking healthy and tangle free. For this reason, these dogs find it difficult to tolerate hot weather and are better suited to living in moderate to cool climates. During the summer, you should exercise her in the morning or in the evening to avoid higher temperatures. In the hotter months, be mindful that her water bowl will need constant refills. Also, make sure she always has access to a shaded area when she is outside. Plenty of exercise and a healthy diet are an essential part of keeping your pup in tip-top shape. In fact, there are specific ingredients that you can look out for in dog foods that can alleviate and, in some cases, prevent certain health conditions. Symptoms include joint pain and stiffness, limping, and, in severe cases, lameness. The main helpers here are glucosamine and chondroitin , which are often included in foods for large breed and senior dogs. Eye problems The Goberian can suffer from eye problems, including juvenile cataracts, corneal dystrophy, and progressive retinal atrophy, which they inherit from their Husky parent. While none of these conditions are life-threatening, they can all lead to blindness. Some foods containing high amounts of these antioxidants include: Cold water fish e. Amazing family dog, intelligent and easy to train, good natured and silly. CONS More prone to serious health concerns, high shedding and needs lots of exercise. Especially huskies! About twice a year, though, these dogs will go through a period of especially heavy shedding. A good bath, blow dry, and brush out will help loosen these tufts of fur so they can be removed or brushed out. When they are not heavily shedding, a quick daily brush-out is sufficient to keep their coat looking amazing and have less shedding around the house. Intelligence Both parent breeds are recognized as intelligent dogs. Despite this potential stubbornness, they are high performers in areas like agility, obedience, dock diving, hunting and retrieving, or really any athletic competition that requires some smarts! They often perform really well with hunting and retrieving, and dock diving! Golden Retriever Husky Mixes love retrieving frisbees! Goberians are definitely considered to be family-friendly dogs. Because of their Golden Retriever heritage, they are often very sweet and patient with children. However, the Goberian can sometimes get a little too excited and play too hard, which may not be ideal around especially small children. The Golden Retriever can run both at high speeds in short increments and at moderate speeds for long distances. Many people make Golden Retrievers their running or jogging partner or even hiking partner! Because of this, the Goberian is usually an all-star athlete. Behavior Goberians can be best described as happy-go-lucky dogs who have tons of energy and love to play. Because of all this energy, they can sometimes develop or engage in some bad behaviors because of boredom. For example, instead of playing with their toys, they may decide that their brand-new dog bed looks like the perfect victim to chew and shred to pieces! Thankfully, because the Goberian is an intelligent breed, they can easily absorb good behavior training. Additionally, so long as they are kept active every day, they are less likely to develop bad habits. Boredom is one of the leading causes of behavioral problems, so it is still important to start training early on. Consider enrolling in behavioral or obedience courses with certified dog trainers. They would use them to pull sleds full of food and equipment, and even keep the families warm at night! In the early s, when the Siberian Husky started making its way to Alaska, their popularity continued to grow. Eventually, they became a favorite breed of people all across the United States. And now, decades later, they continue to be one of the most popular dog breeds in America! History of the Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers were developed by a nobleman by the name of Dudley Marjoribanks, the first Lord Tweedmouth, in the Scottish Highlands in the mids. He developed a breeding program that started with an unusual yellow-coated sporting dog and added in other various retriever-type dogs as well as the Irish Setter, the Bloodhound, and the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. Over a period of 50 years, Lord Tweedmouth kept meticulous records about his breeding program to create the ideal hunting dog, which ultimately led to the Golden Retriever as we know it today. The history of the Golden Retriever and Husky is almost as old as the sun! Especially for dogs as athletic as the Goberian, plenty of protein will be important. Visit our Husky Nutrition hub to learn more. Exercise The Goberian needs lots of exercise! They have lots of energy, especially from their Husky side. While they will love a leisurely walk around the block, they will also need something a little bit more intensive to really get their blood flowing. Even just throwing a ball around in the backyard so the dog can get some sprints in will be enough to help get some of that excess energy out. A typical recommendation is for a Goberian to get at least an hour of exercise every day, if not more. Instead, a couple of half-hour sessions will be good as well! Just a Goberian doing some exercise. Remember that grooming does not necessarily mean shaving, even though it may seem tempting, thanks to all their shedding! However, shaving a double coated dog can actually make shedding worse. In fact, a Goberian should never be shaved except in cases of medical necessity. Both the Siberian Husky and the Golden are double-coated, meaning that their coat has two layers. One that is a bit more coarse and thick on the outside, and the inner layer, which is more soft and downy. Having a double coat actually provides protection from sun damage as well as protection from extreme cold and heat. Shaving makes it more difficult for double-coated dogs to regulate their body temperature, and it can cause the fur to grow back coarse and even somewhat sharp to the touch. That aside, grooming for a Goberian will entail taking the pup to the groomer to get a bath and a good brush out. Or you can do it at home! Groomers will often be able to use an awesome deshedding shampoo and conditioner, which helps reduce shedding in the long run! They are also great at trimming their nails short and even smoothing them with a grinder or file. In addition to trips to the groomer, regular brushing will be incredibly important for maintenance. This Goberian is going to need some good grooming! Image from konathegoldenhusky Training Goberians are eager to please most of the time, thanks to their sweet Golden Retriever nature. However, they can sometimes act quite stubborn, thanks to their Husky background. Despite this, Goberians can be used for tracking, police and military work, and therapy work. Start training early for puppies. But do remember to keep it fun, no matter the age, and train in short increments. Puppies undoubtedly will lose interest and start getting distracted if training is longer than 10 minutes at a time, but bigger dogs can focus for longer. But usually, if you have a treat in your hand, a Goberian will follow you to the ends of the earth! Visit our Husky Training hub to learn more. Goberians are quick learners when training! They love to play and explore, and that can often lead to them getting into trouble. Try your best to stick to a routine for potty training and sleep time. Also, try to incorporate lots of play sessions in between nap times! That will help keep your puppy happy and out of trouble. Look at this cute Goberian puppy! Unfortunately, though, they are at an increased risk of developing certain health concerns. Hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, and osteosarcoma are just a few of the cancers that Golden Retrievers are more susceptible to than other dogs. A few other health problems that Goberians may be more prone to developing include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, bloat, retinal atrophy, and hypothyroidism. A good, nutritious diet and regular veterinarian check-ups will help ensure that these pups remain in good health. Visit our Husky Health hub to learn more. Husky Mixed with Golden Retriever pups tends to have independent thinking. This trait comes from their Husky origin. At times, they may come off as obnoxious and act on their volition. They may be disobedient to your commands. When dealing with this behavior, it is crucial to remember that you need patience in caring for them. This mixed breed dog has a strong prey drive. They tend to chase smaller creatures. Be sure to keep an eye on other small animals such as cats and squirrels. Backyard Breeders Rescue Shelters Professional Breeders If you will spend money, I highly advise buying from professional breeders among these options. These people take good care of the dogs and prevent inbreeding to guarantee minimal health problems. Reliable breeders can provide you with results of genetic testing for the parent dogs and offspring, as well as records of vaccination and other pertinent documents. They also provide health clearances for the parent dogs. However, before buying from professional breeders, you can also consider visiting your local shelters to check if there is an available Golden Retriever Husky puppy and if you can adopt it. There are also rescue-centers that are breed-specific and non-profit. However, it is remarkable that the mixed breed of Golden Retriever and Husky do not shed much, and it is considered part of the low shedders. Aside from the aesthetic purpose of grooming, there are a lot more reasons to accomplish this activity. Developing a more intimate relationship Maintaining the cleanliness and physical health Bringing out the natural oil on the coat Avoid issues like bug infestations Checking anomalies and possible health problems Here is a list of the tools and equipment you will need for grooming this pup: Slicker Brush Cotton Ball Nail Clipper A regular grooming routine is essential in keeping the shiny and healthy coat of your Husky Golden Retriever Mix puppy. A fundamental step in the grooming routine is regular brushing using a slicker brush. Other steps include giving a bath, trimming the nails, and cleaning its ears. The use of a slicker brush over a pin brush is advisable due to its purpose of untangling mats or knots in the fur. Also, it helps in removing debris and loose hair. It can run through the thick layers of the double coat and facilitate effective grooming. Another advantage of this brush is its massaging quality since it has long pins. Massaging the skin of your pup will stimulate the production of essential oils for moisturizing the coat. Also, this will increase the blood circulation and promote health for the dog. This activity should be done at least once a week to decrease the amount of shedding and avoid matting of fur. In brushing the whole coat, you need to brush places of matting and thicker fur more diligently. If your dog has a collar, remove it when brushing the coat, and do not leave out the neck area unkempt. Cutting matted fur should only be done when you cannot brush out the mat. The next step is bathing your pup, especially when it is smelly and dirty. Some people proceed to trim the coat of the puppy before bathing it. It is your discretion if you will follow the steps to the dot. After lathering with shampoo and then rinsing the coat, you can opt to blow-dry the coat. The frequency of bathing will also depend on your decision, based on the smell and sanitary condition of the Golden Retriever Crossed with Husky puppy. After the bath, you will proceed to brush the coat again. Then, you will initiate the trimming process. In trimming, you should avoid trimming the entire coat. The double coat of your puppy functions as an insulation against the fluctuating weather. It also traps warm air on a cold day and cool air on a hot day. Usually, groomers use clippers for this process. However, you may opt to use thinning shears for cutting parts of the coat. You need to trim the fuzzy hair growth around the edges cleanly. You will trim the fur between the toes next. For cracked dog pads, you can apply Vaseline as a regimen. In trimming the legs, you will cut the unkempt fur to achieve symmetry and balance. The fur on the front of the legs is shorter than that on the back. The hair on the back of the legs should flare out slightly behind the dog. Similar with the legs, trimming the chest and neck should aim to remove the unkempt fur. It should be noted that you will move the thinning shears with the direction of hair growth. After the neck and chest areas, you will trim the fur around the ears. This step will help fend off parasites. Lastly, you will trim the tail. For this step, you will trim the length by tapering the tail, starting from the base to the tip. Part of the grooming process is checking for wax buildup in the ears and signs of an ear infection. You can clean their ears with a cotton ball and a dog-specific ear solution. You should never use a cotton swab for their ears. You can also use a cotton ball with mineral oil or microfiber cloth with mineral oil to remove debris from the eyes. The frequency of this activity depends on the rate of its toenail growth. Long names may break, and cause irregular gait and infection. If you do not have this much time in your hands, you should schedule appointments with trustworthy groomers around your neighborhood. Husky Mixed with Golden Retriever Puppies Health Problems Most of the Husky mixed with Golden Retriever dogs are free of fatal and congenital diseases, primarily because of their enlarged gene pool. Their average life span is 10 to 13 years. One condition you need to prevent is heat stroke. Since this breed has a dense and double coat, they do not tolerate heat as much as they tolerate cold weather. You should protect your puppy from overexposure to the sun and keep it well hydrated. Even if there is a reduced risk for the usual health conditions from the parent breeds, it is important to know the possible diseases your puppy may acquire, especially when it gets older. One these health problems is a cataract, an opacity of the eye lens. When your dog acquires this disease, its eyes will appear cloudy. One of the possible health problems is hip or elbow dysplasia. This is an inheritable disease wherein the thighbone does not attach properly with the hip joint. Elbow dysplasia involves joint laxity due to different growth rates of the bones of the elbow. Vaccinations are weapons against fatal diseases. There is a generally accepted guideline of puppy vaccination. Some of the recommended vaccinations are measles, rabies, and DHPP which is the combination of vaccines for distemper, adenovirus, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. By knowing the possible serious health issues of this mixed pup, you can be more watchful when your pup manifests some warning signs related to these possible conditions. Golden Retriever Mixed with Husky Food Requirements The following factors determine the amount of food you will give to your Golden Retriever mixed with Husky puppy: Age—choose a chow that is age-appropriate; our essential guides to the best puppy food brands and the best senior dry dog food will help you find the right one! Size—depending on the size, some pups will thrive on the best dry dog food for small dogs whereas others will be better off with the best large breed dry dog food Metabolism Level of activity The kind of food recommended for this mixed breed is dry food, preferably one of the brands featured in our best dry dog food guide. Commonly, medium to large dogs is given three to four cups of nutritious dog food, divided into two meals. Just like with human food, there are brands you should avoid at any cost. For your convenience, we singled out some of the worst dry dog food brands. Meanwhile, Golden Retrievers have a big appetite and are at risk for obesity. This classification means that you should provide them with lots of mental and physical stimulation. The duration of physical activity would be enough to maintain its weight and protect them from lifestyle diseases. I recommend walking, running, playing with Frisbee or tennis ball for your Golden Retriever Crossed with Husky puppy. If the Golden Retriever Husky mix puppy does not get enough physical and mental stimulation, it may exhibit behavioral problems. These problems include inappropriate barking, chewing, and causing property destruction. This breed is intelligent and fast learners. However, their independent side may antagonize your directions if training started late. An effective way to facilitate the training is by initially having short training sessions. To avoid possible destructive behavior that can be traced to their Husky origin, you should employ obedience training and leash training. You need to assert yourself as the leader by having consistency and clarity. A reliable way to do this task is making the puppy wait for its food. This act will establish your role as the provider and keeper of all the resources, such as the treats, food, toys, and other assets. During training, it is possible to encounter mischief and fluctuations in concentration. A way to prevent this situation is keeping the sessions short. However, you should be cautious and never leave your child and the dog alone. This action could aggravate and provoke the pet. Aside from the appropriate training for the dog, you should teach your child to avoid disturbing or playing with the pup when it is eating or sleeping. Golden Retriever mixed with Husky pups are affectionate to families. They have an innate loyal character, and they enjoy being around people. This trait is probably attributable to its Golden Retriever parent. Up to inches tall Between lbs Up to inches tall Between lbs Coat This Husky Mix has a double coat that is medium in length. Regular grooming can help with shedding, although we will go into more detail about that later on. Color The Goberian has a golden coat that is mostly taken from their Golden Retriever parent. However, it can also be different shades of gold or even to dark and white tinted colors, which can resemble the Husky more closely. Temperament The Goberian is a friendly, loving and outgoing dog that loves to be around people. This pup took the most desirable traits from both parents and is still affectionate and family orientated like the Golden Retriever, but is also very outgoing and playful like the Husky. Due to the fact that they are so active, they love to be around people and will thrive in an environment where they can exercise a lot. They make great playmates for children, but also love to spend time cuddling with their owners. Unfortunately, they can be prone to separation anxiety and do not like to be left alone. This is something to keep in mind if you are out for hours at a time. The Husky is quite a protective breed and often the Goberian can inherit this. They are not aggressive at all, but will feel they have dominance over strangers. Lifespan The average life expectancy of the Goberian is between 10 and 15 years. Known Health Issues Crossbreeding dogs often helps to eliminate health problems that the parent breeds are predisposed to. We have laid these out below. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. This can be passed down from both the Golden Retriever and Husky parents. Cataracts — you might suspect your dog has cataracts if they are constantly bumping into furniture. Fortunately, cataracts can be cured with surgery. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parent breeds and will not crossbreed if there is a chance of passing on any severe issues to offspring. Daily Life Now we know all about the traits and characteristics of the Golden Retriever Husky Mix, it is time to take a look at what daily life with one of these dogs is actually like. We will cover their food and diet, their exercise needs and their grooming needs. Food And Diet As an active breed, the Goberian requires quite a lot of food. They need around 1, calories per day, which equates to around two to three cups of food, and should be split into two meals a day. Of course, you should always check the back of the dog food packet to confirm how much you should be feeding them of a certain food based on their exact weight. Ensure you feed your Goberian high quality kibble. Due to their exercise needs, they also require a lot of protein to keep their muscles lean. You can also buy a food that is formulated specially for large breeds. Take a look at the food we recommend below. As the Goberian is an active dog, they need a lot of protein in their diet. With chicken as the number one ingredient, this food is easy to digest and helps to promote nutrient absorption. Even better, this food is manufactured in the US so you can be sure it is safe for your pooch to eat. Exercise The Goberian dog is a very active breed with high exercise needs. You will need to make sure you can dedicate at least an hour of your day to walking this pup, although more would be preferable. They love to accompany you on hikes and walks and would benefit from a family who is constantly out exercising. If you overexercise them before this, then it can lead to health issues. They are an intelligent breed that like to be kept busy and entertained. An extremely active breed, they will thrive in an active household where they can accompany the whole family while you are out exercising. This breed loves children and makes an excellent playmate, loving to play games and engaging with humans. However, you should be careful when young children play with the Goberian — often these dogs can get frustrated. Due to their loving and affectionate nature, this hybrid dog fits well into many different types of home. This can be fixed with socialization, but you must make sure you give them toys to play with to keep them mentally stimulated while you are not at home. This will help to alleviate boredom and stop unwanted behaviors. Goberians are quite big animals with high energy and therefore need space to run around. These dogs are not suited to apartment living and benefit from a large backyard. If they do not have enough space, they may start to exhibit destructive behaviors. It is also worth noting that you and your family must be able to dedicate time to this dog for exercising every day, otherwise they will have a lot of built up energy and become very frustrated! Training The Goberian is not a difficult breed to train, but it does take time and patience from you. Because of their Husky parent, the Goberian can be a little cheeky and mischievous in training, so you must persevere. This is why training is so important — the older they get without training, the more mischievous they will get! All dogs respond well the positive reinforcement training, such as reward based training. This includes verbal praise and treats. You should never get angry at your Goberian because they will not understand and it will make them not want to learn. Socializing Socialization is important for any dog breed. You must be able to show your pup that there is nothing to be afraid of, so socialization should start at a young age. You should introduce them to new sights, sounds, places, smells, people and animals in a safe and controlled environment. This way, they will grow up to be a much more well-rounded and friendly dog. Grooming Due to their thick coat, you may think that the Goberian sheds a lot. However, they actually do not shed as much as their Husky parent and only require weekly grooming to keep their coat neat and not tangled or matted. Luckily, Goberians do not require much grooming and will only need a bath once a month, particularly when they are dirty. You can take them to the groomers if this is easier. The groomers will also be able to help you trim their nails, which should be done when necessary. This will prevent dental decay and disease. You can always use dental sticks if needed. Goberian Breed Traits. It is a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Siberian Husky. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know youcan get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. This is my 1—year-old Goberian. She is just so adorable and very quiet. Ben gets to run along the beach nearly every day and almost everyone that meets him asks what breed of dog he is and exclaims how gorgeous and friendly he is towards them. He's very smart and it took no time at all to get him housetrained. Now he's working on a full arsenal of tricks. He was supposedly the biggest one in the litter. He is around 35 lbs. He has his 16th month check-up on the 15th. I am curious to see how much he has grown in a month. He is a sweet-tempered dog. He is also extremely smart. He has been easily trained, house and in general. His mother was a one-year-old Golden Retriever and his dad was the Siberian Husky. Both were full-breed. His mom's name was Molly and dad was Smokey. Mom was all brown of course and dad was brownish, grey and white. These friendly four-footers do well with other pets, children, and strangers. With striking good looks and a sometimes dignified demeanor, the Siberian husky is sure to steal your heart. Scour the internet. Using specific breed filters on dog matching websites like petfinder can help you narrow down your search with just a couple of clicks. Talk to current Goberian owners. If you know any Goberian owners, ask them how they stumbled upon their furry best friend. They may be able to point you to a breeder or at the very least, in the right direction. Speak to parent breeders. Golden retriever and husky breeders may be able to connect you with a sweet Goberian mutt. Once you track down a Goberian, make sure your future puppy is coming from a reputable breeder. Doing so can help ensure that your potential puppy is a happy and healthy hound. Check shelters. You may be able to find a golden retriever and husky mix at a local animal shelter as well. Just keep in mind that most rescue Goberians will likely have a few other breeds mixed in them besides golden retriever and husky which makes them even more special and unique! Because they are a cross between two dog breeds, the Goberian can have any mix of characteristics from the parent breeds. They may take on more traits of one parent or have a combination of both. Goberians are a relatively new designer dog breed that tends to be friendly, affectionate, and gentle. Because they are a mixed dog breed, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. They tend to have a gentle and loyal nature. Goberians tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can get along with other pets in the house, but may need to be introduced and socialized for it if they inherit the Siberian Husky prey drive. The Goberian is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Because of their energy, they are best suited for larger homes with a securely fenced-in yard where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living if they get enough exercise and attention. They tend to prefer cooler climates, but they do well in just about any climate. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold. Despite the occasional independent streak, a Goberian thrives on affection and loves to be near their families. Plus, they tend to be easily bored, so they do not tend to do well with long periods of alone time. As with any hybrid dog breed, a Goberian can inherit all, a mix, or none of the potential health problems common to the parent breeds. Talking to the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parents and asking to see any health clearances can help ease potential concerns you may have. In general, the Goberian is intelligent and learns quickly, but the overall trainability of them will vary. They can be moderately easy to train or more difficult depending on the mix of characteristics from the two parent breeds. If the Goberian puppy takes more after their Golden Retriever parent, they will be easier to train and eager to please you. However, if they take after their Siberian Husky parent, they will be more difficult to train as they will be more stubborn and independent. Regardless, you will want to plan for puppy training classes, especially if you are a first-time dog owner. Plus, the classes offer opportunities for early socialization, which is also important. Because the Goberian is a mixed dog breed, their coat can come in a variety of coat colors. Their coat tends to be long and dense and may be straight or slightly wavy. They can range from light to moderate shedding year-round and may have two heavier shedding sessions as the seasons change. Bathing is an occasional requirement as needed and many Goberians only need a bath every months. Trimming nails on a monthly basis is usually sufficient. You want to make sure their ears are not trapping moisture, dirt, or debris that could lead to an ear infection. Thankfully, you can help prevent dental disease in your dog by implementing a good dental care plan. You can also supplement your efforts with vet-approved dental hygiene treats and chews, and even a specially-formulated dental care diet. The Goberian is a high-energy dog breed. They require a lot of daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. In addition to daily walks and some playtime, your Goberian is likely to enjoy running with you, going on a hike , and maybe even swimming. A fully-grown Goberian usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Goberian generally lives years. Goberian Puppies for Sale Thanks for visiting our Goberian page! With appreciation Ohio Dear Peter: As I indicated to you on the telephone I have spent a considerable amount of time researching breeders of quality German Shepherd Dogs with a hour drive. Having done so I have concluded that you offer exactly what we have been looking for. Your ethics, quality of dogs you breed, concern for the proper placement and a willingness to help educate us so that we can become the best possible owners that this puppy deserves is invaluable. Also, the fact that you do this for the love of the breed as opposed to earning a living means a lot not to mention the pricing structure. Pricing them so that they are affordable to the average family is another indicator of your character. West Virginia Dr. He has been nothing but wonderful. When buying a puppy it is a good ideal to visit the kennel. You should be able to interact with their dogs, especially the mom and dad of the puppy you are considering. This is the only way to check the temperament of their breeding dogs. By visiting the kennel you can inspect the cleanliness of the facility, and how the puppies are being taken care of. You can interact with the puppies and also, check the temperament of the puppies themselves and over all health. By visiting the kennel you will also be able to see the over all looks and structure of the breeding dogs. By doing these things this would help improve the German Shepherd Breed itself. It would make it difficult to breed and sell inferior puppies, which would help keep the breed from deteriorating.
