Life Span Did You Know? The American Bulldog is a descendant of a generic bulldog type of dog breed brought into the region that is now the Southern United States by working-class immigrants many years ago. These were all-around working dogs used by small farmers and ranchers for several tasks around the farm. They were often found working as catch dogs, stock dogs, and overall farm guardians. When feral pigs were introduced to the New World, they had no natural predators and the population quickly grew out of control. In addition to their farm duties, the settlers found the bulldog-type dog to be the best solution they had for dealing with it. So, the bulldog continued to thrive, especially in the South. Johnson and Alan Scott that we have what we know today as the American Bulldog. Modern American Bulldogs can still be found working as all-around utility dogs, farm dogs, catch dogs, cattle drovers, and more. They can also be found competing in dog sports, working as a guardian, police, or military dog, and are also popular as a family pet. This dog breed is a sweetheart with a gentle, fun-loving nature. The American Bulldog is affectionate and adores their families. They also love children and tend to be good with other animals. American Bulldogs can have a high prey drive, so you will want to make sure you introduce and socialize them properly with other small animals in the household. Due to their protective nature, they can be aloof towards strangers and strange dogs, especially when they are younger. Early socialization can help them be more comfortable navigating their guardian instincts. Overall, this dog breed tends to be confident, social, and are most at ease and relaxed when they are with the people they love. American Bulldogs are an emotional dog breed and thrives on human attention and affection, so they tend to bond strongly with their owners and may come across as clingy sometimes. They will also often convince themselves that they are lap dogs regardless of their size, so make sure you are ready for a lot of love and cuddles with your American Bulldog, drool and all! The American Bulldog is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They are strong, high-energy working dogs that love being around their favorite humans. This makes them better suited to larger homes with space for them to run. They are not generally a good fit for apartment living, but they can adapt as long as they get more than enough exercise and attention. Because they do tend to bond strongly with their owners and want to be near them, they do not tend to do well with long periods of time alone. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold, but can adapt to well to most climates. There are some health issues that can be found in specific genetic lines and are not common to the breed overall, but these can be ruled out with genetic tests. Some potential health conditions to be aware of in general with the American Bulldog include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thyroid disorders, kidney disorders, bone cancer, and eye-related issues like ectropion, entropion, and cherry eye. Talking to the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and asking to see any health clearances can help allay potential concerns. American Bulldogs are highly trainable and eager to please, so they are a good fit for owners of any experience level, including first-time dog owners. They can have a stubborn streak, so a first-time dog owner may want to consider enrolling in puppy training classes. As with any dog breed, early and ongoing training and socialization are important for your American Bulldog puppy to grow into a well-rounded, and a well-behaved, dog. This dog breed has a short coat that is generally smooth. Common coat colors are white and predominately white with patches of brindle, black, or red. Chance, one of the canine stars from the Homeward Bound films, was an American Bulldog. Featured American Bulldog Article. We specialize in Bully-type, also sometimes referred to as Johnson American Bulldogs. However on occasion we do produce fantastic standard- and hybrid-type American Bulldogs. We breed for functional and balanced temperament allowing for the American Bulldog to be a family member and a companion while having the drive and intelligence to perform desired functions. At Grand Future, we typically produce large American Bulldogs. Males range in lbs and females range in lbs. We have always bred to a significantly stricter breed standard than the current American Bulldog breed standards under U. Dogs with the following characteristics are not shown at conformation shows nor bred in our kennel: 1. Full black mask — this genetic trait is usually a result of another breed having been infused into the gene pool. Usually a dog with a kinked tail itself is not at risk of health complications as a result of the kinked tail. Teeth — dogs missing more than 3 teeth. Dogs lacking full pigmentation are more susceptible to various health problems. Lack of pigment is also responsible for deafness in dogs. We have never produced a deaf dog. Interested in a puppy? We have many repeat buyers — over 30 families have purchased 2,3,4, and even 5 dogs. Our dogs generally love children and have balanced temperament. Having produced over dogs in 7 generations, we have history and data that allows us to make some conclusions that we believe are significant. The very common problem of hip dysplasia that afflicts this breed is nearly non-existent in our kennel. Our dogs tend to have normal locomotion — good movement due to anatomically sound physical structure. Our dogs have never torn ligaments such as the Canine Cruciate Ligament CCL , which leads us to conclude that such problems are likely hereditary in nature. Our dogs have never prematurely died from heart problems, which leads us to conclude that such problems are likely hereditary in nature. Our dogs have never been diagnosed with tracheal hypoplasia — a hereditary genetic defect common in bulldog breeds that leads to potential deadly obstruction of the airway. Our dogs tend to live long. Our foundation dog lived to the age of 15 years and 10 months old. Our dogs have never been afflicted with cancer at a young age. The earliest instance of cancer has been encountered at 8 years of age by one dog. The remainder of cases have been documented at over 10 years of age. The biggest tragedy for an owner is in having to care for a sick dog as a result of poor breeding, and be absolutely helpless as that dog passes in their arms. Exorbitant medical bills end up being paid to prolong the time together even by just a little with the beloved family member. As with any animal breeding program, our kennel is not immune from problems. This drives us to continually improve. We maintain contact and help our owners in any way we can; even at 4AM or during a vacation since we have owners all over the world in various timezones. Our breeding expertise enables us to deliver healthy, beautiful, strong, and intelligent American Bulldog puppies. We provide a contractual health guarantee against the following genetic health problems — hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, Canine Cruciate Ligament CCL ruptures, cataracts, entropion, ectropion, heart, kidneys, thyroid, ichthyosis, cryptorchidism, epilepsy, and any neurological disorders including NCL. Our conversation with a prospective owner always involves questions to understand the kind of dog the person would like — the more details the better. If so inclined, the prospective owner can request guidance in picking the puppy based on personality and activity level, temperament, phenotype, and more. We evaluate our puppies at 6 weeks of age on a variety of parameters. We provide lifetime unlimited advice and guidance by phone to owners concerning all subjects relating to dog ownership. You can be sure you will have the information you need to succeed even if this is going to be your first American Bulldog puppy. Because we stand by the quality of our work, we want our owners to participate in our breeding program and we are happy to provide the necessary guidance. Our dogs are also ideal candidates for service animal work. Training a service dog requires a significant investment of time and money, making the genetic health and temperament of the dog even more critical. A service dog needs to be healthy, hassle-free, intelligent and receptive to training, have stable temperament to handle any type of environment, and of course lead a long life disease-free. All of these selective requirements for service dog candidates make Grand Future American Bulldogs an ideal fit. Join us in our mission of producing the best American Bulldogs possible! When going on walks, you'd expect all 60 lbs of him to drag you, but not Shaw! He walks so well on leash because he is so attentive to his human. Even in the play yard, Shaw will enjoy a nice leg stretch and a lap or two around the yard, but then he will come back to check in with whoever took time out of their day to show him love. He will sit by you and soak up all the affection you have to offer. Shaw is a smart boy and will gladly sit for a treat, which he will take ever so gently. He'd LOVE to bond with his forever human over training and treats. Again, that attentive nature of his will quickly capture your heart. The nice thing about Shaw is that he is the best of both worlds. He'd love to take a stroll with you, but he'd love to hang at home with you just as much. He really just wants to be around his people. Shaw has had positive interactions with another dog at the shelter. We suggest doing slow introductions with Shaw because he is learning how to "dog" with other dogs. He is not aggressive, simply unsure! As always, we strongly recommend bringing in your dog for a meet and greet to make sure it is a good match!

People with this condition have a short nose and flat head, which can cause difficulty breathing. In some cases, the obstruction can also cause the Frenchies to snort and snore. Other causes of snorting and snoring can include an obstruction in the airways, an allergic reaction, or the position the Frenchie is sleeping in. Genetics can also play a role, as can other health issues. While these are all common reasons for Frenchies to snort and snore, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Each Frenchie will experience these noises in a different way, and it is important to consult with a veterinarian if the snoring or snorting is causing problems. This is influenced by many factors, but you can help your dog live a longer life by making a few small changes. Feed them a healthy diet, provide plenty of exercise, and keep them clean and healthy. Most pet owners should expect to pay between a few hundred dollars to one thousand dollars. The surgery is usually done on dogs between the ages of one and seven years old. The surgery is usually successful in correcting the problem and the dog typically recovers quickly. There is a small risk of complications post-surgery, but they are relatively rare. Do French Bulldogs Need Clothes French Bulldogs are known for their short hair, but this does not mean that they do not need clothes. Post Views: .Introduction If you have a French Bulldog, you may have noticed that they breathe a lot faster when they are sleeping compared to when they are awake. This is due to their short muzzle, which causes problems with regulating their body temperature and breathing rates. Making sure that your Frenchie has regular vet visits may help identify any underlying issues that contribute to their fast breathing. What is a French Bulldog? A French Bulldog is a small, lovable breed of dog characterized by their short muzzle and big, upright ears. They are the perfect companion for all ages, from children to seniors. French Bulldogs are very affectionate, playful, and loyal. They are also very intelligent and easy to train. While they may not be the best guard dogs, they are excellent at keeping their owners happy and entertained. French Bulldogs are prone to breathing issues due to their short muzzle. When they sleep, they may start to breathe faster than usual as a result. This is normal and should not be cause for alarm. Regular checkups are key to keeping your fur baby healthy and happy. Heat stress and anxiety can also be contributing factors to this breathing pattern. You can help your Frenchie by making sure they get regular exercise before bed. A short walk can help reduce anxiety and restlessness. Opt for cooling beds, to help keep them feeling cool and comfortable throughout the night. Make sure the temperature of the room they are in is lower than usual, and never forget to take them to the vet regularly. Common Causes of Fast Breathing in Sleeping French Bulldogs French Bulldogs are brachycephalic, meaning they have short muzzles, which can cause them to have difficulty regulating their body temperatures and breathing. To help your Frenchie breathe better while sleeping, try taking them on short walks before bed, using cooling beds, keeping the room temperature low, and visiting the vet regularly. If you follow these tips, your Frenchie will be breathing easier in no time. Anxiety and Stress can also cause French Bulldogs to breathe faster while sleeping. Signs of stress include licking their lips, trembling, and panting. Spend some time bonding with them, and provide plenty of toys and activities to keep them busy and stimulated. If your Frenchie has trouble relaxing, talk to your vet about supplements or medications that can help. With a bit of patience and tender loving care, you can help your Frenchie relax and breathe easier at night. Brachycephalic Syndrome If your French Bulldog is suffering from brachycephalic syndrome, it is essential that you familiarize yourself with the condition and learn how to manage it. Regular exercise helps too: take your Frenchie for a short walk before sleeping in order to help them regulate their body temperature. If your Frenchie has problems with anxiety, stress or heat stress, you should take them to the vet for a check-up. Your vet can help you identify the underlying cause and offer advice on how to manage the condition. Be sure to keep the room temperature low and provide adequate ventilation and plenty of toys and activity to keep your pet occupied. Regular vet visits are essential for the health of your Frenchie. Heat Stress If your French Bulldog is breathing fast while sleeping during the summer, they may be suffering from heat stress. To help your Frenchie, try to keep them in cool environments as much as possible. If you have air conditioning, try to keep them in a cool room during the day and night. Aside from keeping your pup cool, it is important to help your Frenchie manage their energy levels prior to bed. This means getting a bit of exercise in the form of a short walk before bedtime. This will help them calm down, relax, and sleep better. You can also invest in cooling beds that are specifically designed for overheated pups. These beds are usually filled with gel beads that absorb body heat and keep your pup cool. It is important to keep up with regular vet visits. If your Frenchie is still having issues regulating their body temperature, your vet may be able to recommend medications or other treatments to help them. If the fast breathing is accompanied by other symptoms, your vet will be able to diagnose and treat your pup. Anxiety and Stress If your French Bulldog is suffering from anxiety and stress, the best thing you can do is give them the love and reassurance they need to feel safe and secure. Taking them for short, calming walks before bedtime can help them manage their stress levels, and provide a sense of comfort and security. Providing your Frenchie with a cooling bed, such as an orthopedic or memory foam type, will help keep them cool and relaxed during sleeping hours. Remember to take your Frenchie to the vet regularly to ensure they are getting the best care possible. Try to avoid high-traffic areas, loud environments, and places where there might be loud noises or too many people. Make sure that their environment is comfortable and that they feel safe, secure, and loved. Showing them kindness and assurance, and making sure to take them to the vet regularly, are sure-fire ways to keep your Frenchie breathing easy during sleep time. Short walks before bed can help to tire them out and reduce their anxiety levels. Regular vet visits are key to making sure your pup stays healthy and any underlying health concerns can be addressed. Make sure their bed is clean and free of any sharp objects, and keep their sleeping area away from any loud noises or electronics. You can also reduce their chances of getting overstimulated by playing a calming sound in the background. Spend quality time with them, give them plenty of exercise and love, and provide them with a safe and comfortable place to sleep. With the right effort, your French Bulldog can be breathing normally and happily in no time. Short Walks Before Bed Taking your French Bulldog for a short walk before bedtime is an excellent way to help regulate their breathing. Not only does it help to tire them out, but it also helps them to relax, which can prevent them from becoming too anxious while they sleep. The exercise can help to improve their overall health and well-being, as it helps to keep their bodies in shape. This will still tire them out and help to prevent fast breathing during sleep. Tug-of-war and hide-and-seek are all great ways to tire them out without having to leave the house. Cooling Beds Cooling beds are a great way to help your French Bulldog stay cool and comfortable while sleeping. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so you can find one that fits your Frenchie perfectly. Look for beds with a cooling gel or water core, and those with an elevated design to keep your pup off the ground. Look for beds that are specifically designed for small breeds, as these will be the most comfortable and supportive for your Frenchie. See also Can a Rottweiler Kill a Coyote? Not only will a cooling bed help keep your pup cool and comfy, but it will also help reduce the risks of overheating and respiratory distress. With the right cooling bed and proper monitoring, you can help make sure your French Bulldog gets the restful sleep they need without having to worry about their fast breathing. With a little extra care, your pup will be sleeping peacefully in no time! To help your Frenchie stay cool, you can use fans and air conditioning to maintain a comfortable temperature. If necessary, you can also use cool mats or cooling beds designed for dogs that are made of materials that help keep their body heat regulated. By keeping the room temperature low, you will be helping your Frenchie to stay more comfortable while they sleep. This is because the vet can check for any underlying medical conditions and make sure your pup is in tip-top shape. That way, if something ever changes or your Frenchie experiences any difficulties, you and your vet will both be ready to act. Vet visits also give your pup an opportunity to receive vaccinations and other important preventative care. This can help to protect your Frenchie from illnesses, and can even help them to live a longer and healthier life. Conclusion To ensure your French Bulldog is breathing normally while sleeping, you should take a few proactive steps. Take your Frenchie on a short walk before bed, and make sure to cool the room temperature to a comfortable level. Investing in a cooling bed for your pup will also help regulate their body temperature and breathing. You should also be aware of the common causes of fast breathing while your Frenchie sleeps. Brachycephalic Syndrome and heat stress can both be a factor, as well as anxiety and stress. If you notice your French Bulldog having trouble regulating their body temperature, consult with your vet immediately. Taking proactive steps to care for your pup can make all the difference! Post Views: .Animal Emergency Center Why is my French bulldog breathing so fast while sleeping? Like us, dogs will dream throughout their sleeping pattern. This is part of the REM process. This part of the sleep cycle will involve a lot of brain activity. Your Frenchie may use more energy during this time frame. They will begin to breathe more rapidly to take in extra oxygen, which can then be transported from the lungs into the bloodstream and converted into energy. The REM phase of a puppy would be much more intense than that of a grown french bulldog as they go into REM sleep more often. Most likely, your Frenchie is dreaming about chasing something around the yard. Older dogs tend not to breathe rapidly for extended periods in their sleep, though. In that case, they can develop heat strokes; this can become serious and can even kill them. If your French Bulldogs show signs of heat exhaustion, move them to a cool, shady spot and try to get them to your Vet as soon as possible. Frenchies are more susceptible to heat strokes than very old dogs. Douse your Frenchie immediately with cool water to prevent shock. If appropriate, you could also use a wet towel or put them in front of a fan. Allow your French Bulldog to drink small amounts of cool water. Keep dousing your Frenchie with cold water until their breathing is not as quick and they start to settle. Rapid breathing is a symptom of anemia. Though rapid breathing alone should not be seen as the only indicator, your dog suffers from anemia. Red blood cells and the main hemoglobin purpose are to take oxygen from the lungs to other areas of the body. Several forms of dog anemia can affect your Frenchie with various symptoms. Severe forms of the disease may present life-threatening symptoms to your Frenchie. Still, mild forms can be controlled with proper veterinary care, and your Frenchie will recover. Here are several signs that you can look for and obtain veterinary care if you see a combination of them: Rapid breathing. Frenchies have become wildly popular, thanks in part to celebrities flocking to the breed. Lady Gaga, Taraji P. French Bulldogs also have wonderful personalities and are great dogs for living in small spaces because they don't need a lot of exercises. But there are some known health issues in the breed that include breathing fast. In this article, learn what you need to know if your French Bulldog has started breathing fast and you are not sure what is wrong. But if your Frenchie is in obvious distress, don't wait — call your dog's veterinarian right away! French Bulldog Breathing Fast French Bulldogs breathing fast is a known health concern for short muzzle breeds like the Frenchie, as Vets Now explains. Sometimes fast breathing is a simple case of your dog getting overheated. They will pant because that is a form of canine sweating to help their bodies cool down. But sometimes fast breathing can also mean your dog is anxious. Frenchies are prone to separation anxiety because they get so bonded to their people. And sometimes fast breathing in French Bulldogs is related to their facial structure and anatomy. Their short, cute faces can also mean shorter respiratory passages and narrowed nostrils that make it harder to get enough air in with each breath. Listen to a Veterinarian Talk About French Bulldog Breathing Problems In this short and useful YouTube video , you can hear from an experienced canine veterinarian who is treating a French Bulldog puppy with breathing problems. As you will learn, many of the breathing issues French Bulldogs have are related to their facial anatomy. And some of the problems are fixable with surgery, but since surgery can be pricey it is good to know about these possibilities as early as possible. In the remainder of this article, we will talk about what causes these breathing problems and your options to make sure your Frenchie stays safe and healthy. So let's take a look at the main reasons your Frenchie might start breathing fast. When in doubt, always take your dog to the nearest veterinary emergency room! Brachycephalic muzzle type As dog expert Stanley Coren, Ph. The three main shapes are dolichocephalic long muzzle , mesocephalic medium muzzle , and brachycephalic short muzzle. The French Bulldog has a brachycephalic shape. However, there can be some variation between the three shapes, which means some French Bulldogs may have shorter muzzles than others. The shorter the muzzle, the less room for everything that needs to fit inside, including teeth, nostrils, nasals passages, tonsils, larynx, tongue, palate, eyes — there are a lot of necessary anatomical parts that have to fit in your dog's head! Because of this, sometimes all that extra tissue gets bunched up inside the nostrils, which causes them to be smaller and thinner. That makes it harder to draw air in. This can lead to fast breathing or panting in Frenchies. Obstructive airway syndrome Because of both their short muzzle shape and a co-occurring unrelated genetic issue, French Bulldogs can develop a very serious lifelong genetic health issue called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, or BOAS for short. As Discover Magazine explains, this genetic issue basically means your dog spends their life trying to breathe in all the air they need through the equivalent of a drinking straw. While not all dogs that have BOAS have a short muzzle shape, having the gene that causes BOAS and having a short muzzle can make the health concerns even more worrisome for a Frenchie. Getting overheated Many people don't realize that dogs don't sweat like people sweat. Dogs can't sweat through their skin. They sweat by panting and through their paw pads. As the American Kennel Club AKC explains, French Bulldogs can be unusually challenged to keep cool in hot weather and should be kept indoors during the warm hours of the day. Otherwise, fast breathing may represent a desperate attempt on the part of your dog to stay cool. Getting over-anxious As French Bulldogs of Texas breeder points out, French Bulldogs have a tendency to develop separation anxiety. These dogs just really don't like being left alone! A Frenchie that is expected to self-entertain for hours each day is likely to become very anxious when you leave for yet another long day away from the house. One of the hallmark symptoms of separation anxiety can be panting and fast breathing. Here, context will help you figure out if separation anxiety could be at the root of your French Bulldog's fast breathing. Getting over-excited French Bulldogs are also quite easily able to get themselves worked up to the point where they get over-excited and start breathing fast. Something as simple as you coming home or a new tasty treat could send your Frenchie into a tailspin frenzy of activity, with the end result being a dog that is panting to calm down and cool down. Ignore your dog when you first come home This can be a hard one, especially since you probably missed your pup as much as they missed you! But especially if separation anxiety may be at the root of your dog's fast breathing, you need to help your French Bulldog learn how to greet you in a calm way that is not dangerous to their health. One of the best methods is to simply not act like you coming home is a big deal. Ignore your dog until they calm down and only then greet them. Frenchies are so smart it probably won't take long before your dog catches on and adjusts its behavior. Be careful not to over-exercise or play in hot weather French Bulldogs are very vulnerable to overheating, especially when they are outdoors in the warm season. But since your Frenchie is never going to grasp the need to take it easy, you will have to be the one to moderate your dog's activity level. Limit outdoor activity to cooler hours and make sure your pup isn't playing too vigorously or walking too fast. Sit down and encourage your dog to sit on your lap If your French Bulldog is overheated or over-excited, the best thing you can do is model the behavior you want your dog to adopt. In other words, just sit down and become calm. Your dog will probably want to join you and sit on your lap most French Bulldogs love to do this. Speak gently and softly to your dog and give them pats to ease any anxiety or distress they may be feeling. Talk with your dog's veterinarian about options While no dog owner loves to hear this, for some French Bulldogs a surgical intervention may be what gives them the best quality of life. It is anxiety-producing when a dog cannot breathe fully — for both your dog and for you. In some cases, simply removing some of the extra tissue in the nasal passages may help ease your dog's breathing problems. Your veterinarian may also want to try medications either over-the-counter remedies or prescription medications to keep your dog calmer and quieter before recommending surgery. Talk to your vet and find out what all your different options are so you can make the best decision for your dog. So if your young French Bulldog puppy is already showing signs of chronic fast breathing and other BOAS symptoms, the situation is not likely to improve on its own. You definitely want to get your dog's veterinarian involved from the start to avoid any unpleasant or expensive surprises later on. The very same qualities that can make French Bulldogs such charming and sociable canine companions can also cause health problems for these naturally excitable dogs. While French Bulldogs are not known for having a high energy level in general, they can always find the energy to spend time with their people. This is why, as a Frenchie owner, you will have to make sure you are moderating your own behavior so your dog stays safe and healthy and is able to breathe easily. By watching for signs of distress, you can give your French Bulldog the best life. Pin 0 Shares The old adage says you should let sleeping dogs lie, but is your dog is breathing heavily through nose while sleeping, is this wise? Well, yes, and no. Below you can find out what the rapid and heavy sleep breathing might mean, and whether you should act. Why does my dog breathe heavy when sleeping? This is something that us humans do, and our canine friends. We and dogs will breathe a lot quicker during REM sleep, and this often manifests itself with short and quick breaths through the nose. But the structure of their sleep looks remarkably human: Like humans, dogs cycle through stages of wakefulness, rapid-eye-movement REM sleep and non-rapid-eye-movement sleep. Interestingly, dogs are more inclined to breath heavily and fast through their nose during sleep as puppies, and older dogs. But, in some cases it can be a sign of a potential health problem, so you need to know what to look for if your dog is breathing heavily through their nose whilst sleeping. According to various veterinary websites, monitor the fast nose breathing. Does it last for just a few minutes? But, if your dog breathes fast through their nose all night and all the time, that could be the significant. Puppies will often breathe quickly and heavily through their nose in their sleep. When is heavy nose breathing in sleep normal for dogs? At this point you might start to see your dog breathing heavily through his nose, or breathing fast through his nose while sleeping. You might also notice some other tell-tale signs they are in REM, which when matched up with the heavy and fast breathing is perfectly normal. Deeper and heavier breathing than is usual. Body twitches including kicking out and stretching. Moving of their paws in a padding motion as if they are dreaming about swimming. Barking and whimpering in their sleep. If you see this happening with your dog for a few minutes, then you should not be alarmed. If they are in a dream they could react and lash out if surprised. When is heavy nose breathing in sleep a cause for concern then? For some individuals, rates lower than 30 breaths per minute may be considered increased and abnormal by your veterinarian. Ask your veterinarian what rate is considered increased and abnormal for your dog. Based on the advice from VCA animal hospitals, count how many fast or heavy breaths you dog is having in a minute. Related questions on breathing and sleeping Hopefully the insight into why your dog is breathing heavily though his nose while sleeping has given you some peace of mind. How many hours in a day should a dog sleep? On average, a breed like a French bulldog will sleep for 13 hours a day. Our dog will quite happily sleep all night for up to 10 hours, and then have more naps in the day. However, puppies will sleep a lot longer. If you have a puppy, not only will they breathe heavily through their nose while sleeping but will also need to sleep up to a mammoth 20 hours in a day! Therefore, they might need up to 18 to 20 hours of sleep to recharge their batteries. This is normally of no concern, unless you see other changes in habits — for example digestive issues, crying in the night, and other unusual things. Why do dogs sleep so much? Dogs need more sleep than their human owners, so to us it looks like they sleep a lot. According to PetMd. Nicholas Dodman, professor emeritus at Tufts University. This is particularly true with larger breeds who will need more sleep due to their size and the energy they use up. Older dogs also need more sleep, but for different reasons. Do dogs dream? Scientists have tested canine brain waves and found that when sleeping, dogs exhibit similar deep sleep and REM like us, which could indicate your dog is dreaming. During REM rapid eye movement sleep, your dog will start to breathe fast through his nose. Is my dog having a seizure or dreaming? Seizures can also be quite similar to the behavior that dogs exhibit whilst dreaming. On the other hand, if your dog wakes up and is confused and anxious, that could point to something more serious. Fast breathing through the nose while sleeping is very natural but should only last for a few minutes. Longer than 10 minutes and they should be out of the REM stage of sleep. If the fast and heaving breathing in sleep does last longer than this, and you see other strange symptoms, check in with your vet just to be sure. You might also like…. Your French Bulldog sleeping with a fast rate of breath could be an indication of a medical condition. Normally, a French Bulldog breathes at a rate of breaths per minute at rest. However, in some cases, the breathing rate is faster than normal during sleep. The most common causes of fast breathing while sleeping include exercise, anxiety, respiratory infection, and heart disease. If your French Bulldog is breathing fast while sleeping, it is important to observe the symptoms carefully to determine the cause of the problem and seek veterinary help if necessary. Fast breathing in French Bulldogs occurs when the number of breaths per minute is higher than the usual rate. The normal heart rate for a French Bulldog is between 20—30 breaths a minute at rest. A French Bulldog that is breathing fast while sleeping could be an indication of a medical condition or other factors, such as exercise or stress. What Could Be the Possible Causes? There are several factors that could lead to fast breathing in French Bulldogs. Exercise If your dog has been physically active during the day, his breathing rate may increase during sleep. The increase in breathing is a normal physiological response to increased activity and should not be a cause for concern. Anxiety Like humans, dogs can suffer from anxiety and stress. If your French Bulldog is feeling anxious or stressed out, this can result in an increase in breathing rate while sleeping. This is usually accompanied by other symptoms, such as coughing and sneezing. Heart Disease Fast breathing while sleeping can also be a symptom of heart disease in French Bulldogs. This is usually accompanied by other signs, such as coughing, difficulty breathing, and fainting. If your French Bulldog is exhibiting any of the symptoms mentioned above, it is important to take them to the vet for a thorough examination. The vet will be able to determine the cause of the problem and provide your dog with the appropriate treatment. It is also important to ensure that your dog is getting enough exercise and that their environment is stress-free. These simple steps can help ensure that your French Bulldog remains healthy and happy. In conclusion, fast breathing in French Bulldogs while sleeping is often a sign of an underlying medical condition. With the right treatment, your dog should be able to live a long and healthy life. Frenchie breathing fast while sleeping French Bulldogs are known for their adorable flat faces and unique breathing patterns. However, it can be concerning when your Frenchie is breathing fast while sleeping. This behavior is actually quite common in this breed and is typically not a cause for alarm. One reason why French Bulldogs may breathe fast while sleeping is because of their brachycephalic flat-faced anatomy. The structure of their airways can make it more difficult for them to breathe, especially when they are lying down. As a result, they may breathe faster to compensate for this difficulty. Another factor that can contribute to a Frenchie breathing fast while sleeping is their body temperature. French Bulldogs are prone to overheating due to their short noses and compact bodies. When they sleep, their body temperature may rise, causing them to breathe faster in an attempt to cool down. In conclusion, French Bulldogs breathing fast while sleeping is a common occurrence due to their brachycephalic anatomy and body temperature regulation. By taking proper care of your French Bulldog and providing a suitable environment, you can ensure their well-being and enjoy their adorable sleeping habits. While it might be concerning to see your furry friend breathing rapidly, it is actually quite common in this breed. French Bulldogs have a unique body structure that can cause them to have trouble breathing, especially when they are sleeping. This condition is common in dogs with short noses, like French Bulldogs, and can cause respiratory issues. Their flattened faces and narrow nostrils make it harder for them to take in enough air, especially when they are lying down. French Bulldogs are known for their playful and energetic nature, and this can carry over into their sleep. They may dream, run in place, or have muscle twitches while they sleep, which can cause their breathing to become faster. This is completely normal and nothing to be concerned about. While occasional fast breathing is typically nothing to worry about, if your dog is consistently breathing rapidly even when awake, or if they are showing signs of distress such as coughing or wheezing, it may be a sign of a more serious respiratory problem. In these cases, it is best to consult with your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment. In conclusion, French Bulldogs may breathe fast while sleeping due to their brachycephalic syndrome, high energy level, or simply as a normal part of their sleep patterns. As long as your French Bulldog is otherwise healthy and not showing any signs of distress, their fast breathing while sleeping is likely nothing to worry about. Related Info And Products:. It brings about inflammation in the trachea resulting in a dry, hacking cough, especially during the night. As we can see, this is a respiratory infection that constricts the upper airways resulting in fast breathing. If it is accompanied by fever, it is most likely the highly contagious kennel cough. Pneumonia Pneumonia is a disease that causes the microscopic air sacs in the lungs to be inflamed. The common culprit is a viral infection of the lower respiratory tract, but bacteria such as Streptococcus and Bordetella bronchiseptica can also cause the disease. Influenza Canine influenza virus CIV or dog flu is caused by either the H3N8 or H3N2 strain that brings about symptoms of cough, runny nose, and fever. It is typically spread through contaminated objects and respiratory secretions from infected dogs. Diaphragmatic hernia A form of diaphragmatic hernia found in puppies is called a peritoneal-pericardial diaphragmatic hernia PPDH. Puppies with this condition present with labored breathing and an irregular heartbeat, and the only solution to ease the difficulty is through surgery. Pain Dogs are good at concealing pain. It was a survival tactic that their ancestors employed against their enemies in the wild so as not to be seen as the weaker species. One of the typical signs of puppy pain is breathing fast while sleeping and during waking hours. Exposure to pain activates the stress hormone known as cortisol which plays a role in numbing pain. Increased cortisol also results in increased heart rate and faster breathing in puppies. If you suspect that your puppy is in pain, do not attempt to give pain medicines. Instead, head out to the veterinary clinic right away. The veterinarian will conduct a series of physical examinations to pinpoint the exact location of the pain. Blood tests, ultrasounds, and radiography may also be necessary especially if the vet suspects that it is a case of juvenile hip dysplasia. Though hip dysplasia is more common among older dogs, there are cases of puppies that are seen to be suffering from this problem as early as 5 months. Genes play a major role but obesity and poor diet can also be the cause. Depending on the diagnosis, the common pain medicines prescribed for puppies in pain are non-steroidal medicines. Supplements may also be given such as glucosamine to bring down swelling. Food Poisoning Puppies are notorious for eating just about anything. If fur parents failed to remove toxic food and substances around the house, puppies will naturally devour these. Fast breathing is one of the symptoms of food poisoning. Three of the human foods that can result in food poisoning in dogs are chocolate, garlic, and onions. Chocolates also have minimal traces of caffeine. While theobromine and caffeine can be processed by humans, our dogs take a longer time to break down and excrete these two which results in chocolate toxicity. The signs of chocolate poisoning can be seen 22 to 24 hours after intake and some of the symptoms are rapid breathing and increased heart rate. Garlic and Onions toxicity Garlic and onions can cause food poisoning in our dogs because of the compound N-propyl disulfide. This is a compound that damages the red blood cells of dogs and causes hemolysis and anemia. Aside from increased heart rate and faster breathing, the signs include pale gums and lack of coordination. The Dangerous Truth!

Chuck Hahn Best dog ever!!! Worth the wait. He came home perfect! Testimonials Happy Faces Your happiness is our happiness, your success, our success. We take great pride in each and every home we complete with our dogs. We did tons of research. We wanted a dog that did not shed, was hypoallergenic, and had a good temperament. Those dogs are hard to find! We finally came across a very special Australian Labradoodle. We found our Rosie through my best friend who knew the owner of Australian Labradoodles of Texas. Her temperment is what we were really drawn to. She is so calm, obedient, and really wants to please you. She rings a bell when she needs to go outside and walks right next to you on her leash! We feel so lucky that we get to call her ours! To say that Miles has changed our lives for the better would be an extreme understatement! From the moment we set our eyes on him in your videos, we knew he was special, and he has shown us that a million times over. He is a sweet and affectionate dog who loves his family fiercely, acting protective when he needs to, yet demonstrates such a docile and gentle temperament to other people, especially small children who love to pet and squeeze his fluffiness. I had no intention of adding another dog to the mix! After several weeks, I finally pulled the trigger and we brought him home! Charley Brown was the perfect addition to our family and I would recommend these pups to anyone looking for a good family dog. All of our puppies come with Socialization.

The Pug, or Pug Dog, is famous for its flat-faced appearance and large, soulful eyes. They are an ancient dog breed that originated in China over 2, years ago. They were originally developed as a refined pet of Chinese royalty along with the Pekingese and the Shih Tzu. During this time, the Pug was considered a national treasure that outsiders could only access if one was gifted to them. Dutch traders from the s can be credited with bringing the Pug onto the world stage when they brought some back to Europe with them. The Pug made its way to the United States in the s. Now, the Pug is a popular dog breed worldwide. They are a popular companion that provides their owners with plenty of love and laughter from their comedic and playful antics. The Pug is a playful and outgoing dog breed with a charming personality. They tend to be very loving towards children and also get along well with other pets and dogs. They are a companion breed at heart known for their gentle nature and sociable personality. They love to give love and receive it in return. Their sensitive nature makes them intuitive as well and Pugs will often sense the moods of their owners and react accordingly. They crave attention and affection from their owners and are big fans of napping. This dog breed is often described as an ideal house dog and they are moderately adaptable. They will do well in homes of any size, including apartments. The Pug also adapts well to city or country life and are a good fit for singles or families of any size. Although they are highly adaptable to various living situations, they are less adaptable to climates. Pugs are very sensitive to the heat and overexertion, so they are best-suited to moderate climates. They also love to be with their families and will not be happy if left alone for a long time. As with any dog breed, the Pug has some health conditions to be aware of. In particular, corneal ulcers and dry eye are some potential eye problems that can occur. Additionally, Pugs can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and encephalitis. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see health clearances can help allay concerns for some of these health issues. Pugs are also big foodies. They love to eat! Their love for food means this dog breed is prone to obesity. As a brachycephalic dog, their large head and short snout often cause respiratory problems, which can limit their exercise at times and contribute to weight gain. This will cause them to quickly gasp and snort, which can sound relatively alarming. These episodes are usually not harmful as your Pug is just clearing their palate and throat. The Pug tends to be easy to train and is a good fit for owners of any experience level. They are eager to please their owners and tend to pick up on commands quickly. They are sensitive souls and their feelings can be hurt easily, so they will not respond well to harsh corrections. This dog breed responds best to consistent training that focuses on positive rewards and will benefit from participation in puppy training classes. Pugs have a smooth, glossy, and short coat. Their fur is fine and soft. Although their coat is generally low-maintenance, it will shed throughout the year. Aside from brushing, Pugs only need occasional baths on an as-needed basis. Because Pugs have ears that drop down, they can be susceptible to moisture, dirt, or debris. Checking their ears regularly and cleaning as needed helps to keep them healthy and comfortable. The same goes for their iconic face wrinkles. Daily brushing is ideal, but if your Pug is not allowing you to do that, a few times a week should be sufficient. Getting your Pug used to these grooming tasks as a puppy will help make it a positive bonding experience and a much easier process throughout their life. This dog breed has a low to moderate energy level. Generally, daily walks and some play sessions are enough exercise for this dog breed. They may have short bursts of energy as they have a very playful nature, but they will tire easily. Some Pugs can handle a little more activity and even compete in some dogs sports like agility, rally, and obedience. Make sure you check with your vet first before jumping into dog sports with your dog. A full-grown Pug will usually stand 10 to 11 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. This dog breed generally lives for years. The Pug was a popular pet of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Featured Pug Article. Email: rockvalepuppies gmail. Stahlstown, PA Phone: Website: www. Tabitha breeds AKC Pugs and has puppies available throughout the year. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time. I am a "mature woman" but I totally act like a teenager. Hey at my age I get to be bat crazy if I so choose! We've had some crazy times in our 16 years. Our first 9 we lived with a hoarder. Now I can tell you that was NOT fun! We were kept in stacked cages and there wasn't much room and it was FILTHY and when someone pottied above us well you can guess what happened : Then the police came and got all of us and that was awesome! They took us to the shelter and while other dogs seemed scared to be there we were pretty excited because we got nice soft, clean beds and yummy food and they gave us this warm thing called a bath and WOW we smelled really "pretty"! Gidgit and I were adopted by an older couple and although they were nice they didn't fix are wobbly knees so we have some "issues" with them but we've learned to adjust and we are too old for surgery now. The couple started having health problems and they brought us back to the shelter : Lucky for us the awesome Rescue lady at the shelter scooped us up and called 2nd Chance who didn't care how old we were and now we are living with pups and having a great time! Tomorrow we are having a dental. I'm not sure what that means but our foster mommy says our breath smells "stinky poo" I don't think that is a good smell cause when she says it her face gets all weird and wrinkly! Well I'm going to get ready for bed since I have a big day tomorrow. Wish us luck! Considering Bella McKenzie for adoption? Please read entire bio before contacting us. Thank you. However, you only need to stimulate the puppy if it is eating and not with the mother. Keep the puppy warm and continue rubbing it to help it breathe and move. This should be continued until the puppy is under veterinary supervision. For a puppy with anasarca to have a chance of survival, it needs to be treated by a veterinarian. If your dog gave birth at home, then you need to take the puppy to a veterinary office right away. If your normal veterinary office is closed when the mother dog gives birth, then you should take the affected puppy to the closest 24 veterinary emergency clinic. As soon as a puppy is born with anasarca it should begin treatment to stand any chance of survival. Treatment usually includes giving the puppy a diuretic to reduce the amount of fluid the puppy is retaining. If the condition is mild, the puppies can go on to live normal lives. Even with prompt treatment, however, a puppy with a severe case of anasarca has a very slim chance of survival. If the puppy has a severe case of anasarca, it has a very low chance of survive. If this is the case with your puppy, then you should focus on making sure it is comfortable and pain free instead of focusing on recovery. If it doesn't, then your veterinarian will have some suggestions about how to stop the puppies' suffering. This could include keeping it warm and giving it medication to alleviate any pain. In some cases, this could mean compassionate euthanasia. Prepare yourself that the outcome may be death. In many cases of anasarca, the puppy is still born or dies quickly after birth. Medical articles It may sound like an animated character straight out of a Disney movie, but anasarca is, sadly, a life-threatening condition common in Bulldogs , but recognized in other breeds as well. It can theoretically affect any breed of dog, although it is most common in brachycephalic breeds, such as English and French Bulldogs , Bullmastiffs , Pugs , and Boston Terriers. Anasarca puppies, also referred to as walrus puppies, or occasionally water puppies, rubber puppies, or swimmer puppies, are born with an abnormal and lethal amount of fluid under their skin. Anasarca has been recognized for many years, yet as with many canine neonatal illnesses, there is a discouraging lack of knowledge of the true causes of anasarca, and much of what experts believe about it is speculative. When and Why It Occurs The condition appears to develop in the later part of gestation; puppies can be born up to four or five times their normal weight, as a result of the excess fluid. One or all of the puppies may be affected. Survival rates are low, and because of the abnormally large size of the puppies, a cesarean delivery is necessary. Experts consider anasarca to be a congenital problem—meaning it exists at or before birth—but it is unclear whether or not it is always inherited. Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are the only two breeds where anasarca is known to be a hereditary condition, although the mode of inheritance is unknown. In some breeds where the condition is rare, it is thought to be less likely to be inherited. The assumption is that if the genetic potential were there, breeders would be seeing a lot more of it. Environmental factors influencing the condition have been discussed and debated on the internet, but again this is speculative. For example, some breeders, whose dogs have produced anasarca puppies, suggest the culprit may be a high sodium diet, which they believe causes the female to retain water. Experts caution that there is no scientific data to substantiate environmental claims, including those of a high-sodium diet. A Lack of Symptoms To further complicate the matter, symptoms are limited or seemingly non-existent in most cases. This, understandably, catches many breeders and veterinarians off guard. Some experts say that one indicator may be additional weight gain by the female, as a result of the extra fluid. Others observe a listing or shifting of the puppies from one side to the other. Again, experts caution against reading too much into these observations, as there is no viable scientific data to substantiate these symptoms. Although survival rates are low, some water puppies do survive provided they receive immediate veterinary treatment. That's why it's a good idea to get pet insurance that covers hereditary conditions if you end up with a water puppy. Theoretically, surviving puppies should live an otherwise healthy, normal life. The problem is that many puppies do not survive, with many being euthanized shortly after birth. Therefore, as with most everything pertaining to neonatal illnesses, little or no scientific documentation exists regarding the long-term effects of congenital edema in puppies. Have you ever heard of Bulldog Water Puppies? Dog lovers rarely talk about water puppies despite being common. This is a potentially fatal condition that is commonly found in short-nosed dog breeds such as Bulldogs , French Bulldogs , Boston Terrier , Pugs , and more but it has also been seen in other dog breeds such a Labrador Retrievers and Yorkshire Terriers. Water Puppy Syndrome can affect only one or two puppies, or even the entire litter. These puppies are born suffering from Edema —an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in different organs, cavities or body tissues. Water puppies can be 2 to 4 times larger than normal pups in the litter. Sadly, most of them immediately pass away or are stillborn. Water Puppies who are born alive may be categorized as mild, medium or severely affected. Puppies born with Water Puppy Syndrome are also found to be suffering from a combination of vertebral column defects and other abnormalities like cleft palates. What causes Bulldog Water Puppies? In fact, pregnant dogs need plenty of water because the amniotic fluid changes constantly. Signs your Bulldog is going to have Water Puppies There is no surefire way to tell if your Bulldog is going to have water puppies. But here are some signs to watch out for: Drinking unusually larger amounts of water, Shiny-looking something like onion-skin teats and surrounding tissue, Nipple-discharge early in pregnancy. An ultrasound is thought to be a better tool to detect these Water Puppies. Do Bulldog Water Puppies live long? Survival rates in Bulldog Water Puppies are very low. Sometimes, veterinarians recommend putting the puppy down. But some Bulldog breeders report that mild to medium Bulldog Water Puppies who survived the first two to three days grew up to be normal puppies. However, most of these survivors have underlying health problems like cleft palates. A Bulldog breeder also told Bulldog Guide that a couple of Bulldog Water Puppies he took care of had one odd thing in common. One of the surviving Anasarca puppies Toto took care of. He is now 3 years old. The report written by Dr. Constanza Bini et al. But after performing a C-section on the 55th day of pregnancy, they found out that two of the Bulldog puppies have different degrees of subcutaneous edema. Unfortunately, the first and biggest puppy they took out was dead. The second puppy, a male Bulldog, was suffering from mild Anasarca and fortunately survived after performing a series of treatments. The third Bulldog was a normal and healthy pup. Despite managing to live, Bulldog Water Puppy survivors are recommended to be neutered or spayed and spared from breeding. How to help Bulldog Water Puppies? There is no sure way to treat and save an Anasarca from death. But veterinarians have been performing a series of procedures to help Anasarca or Water puppies. Water Puppies must be given treatment as soon as possible. Then, stimulate his genitalia to encourage him to urinate. Bini have been using Lasix, a brand name of the chemical furosemide. This chemical is a diuretic-saluretic, which slows down the re-absorption of sodium. Furosemide must be given immediately intravenously or intramuscularly to the puppy after birth. The administration of Furosemide can be done again every 30 to 45 minutes. But never do this more than three times as it can cause dehydration. Stimulating the pups to pee is also important and must be done every two to three minutes. The vet can also use elastic bandages gently wrapped around the pups to help push out fluid. Mildly-affected Water Puppies can take 1 to 2 hours to breathe normally while moderately-affected water pups take longer — about one and a half hours to four hours — to breathe normally. Severely affected water puppies are very difficult to save and they drown from the fluids and die just within 30 minutes after birth. Severely-affected Water Puppies are known to split in half the abdomen just from handling. How to prevent your Bulldog from having water babies Since the real cause of this condition is still not known, there is no surefire way to prevent it. However, veterinarians and experts recommend the following: Feed a pregnant Bulldog low-salt diet, Reduce — if not remove — anything that can cause potential trauma, Administer autogenous minute virus vaccine if minute virus is suspected. How to Participate in Anasarca Research Bulldog owners and breeders are encouraged to participate in genetic research to identify and determine a marker for Anasarca. The researchers of the study are requesting DNA samples from affected puppies and parents who produced Anasarca or Water Puppies. This research is being conducted at the University of Illinois. If you wish to be involved with the study, you may contact Dr. Michael at mwhughes usc. Leave a Reply: Leave a comment below and share your thoughts. Donate to Support this Research Program Area Abstract Dystocia is one of the most significant reproductive health concerns for dog owners and breeders. While there can be many causes of dystocia, the occurrence of so-called "water" or "walrus" puppies is one of the more common reasons within particular breeds. Water puppies suffer from the abnormal accumulation of body fluids, called anasarca, resulting in a generalized swelling of the body. Normal delivery through the birth canal then becomes difficult or even impossible, oftentimes requiring intervention by caesarean section. Water puppies are generally stillborn or die shortly after birth. While anasarca affects many dog breeds, it appears to be more frequent in the brachycephalic breeds including the Bulldog, French bulldog, Pug, Boston terrier and others. Due to the known genetic relationship between these breeds and the recurrence of anasarca puppies in specific matings, it is strongly believed that there is a significant genetic risk factor associated with this problem. Modern genetic tools and techniques have greatly improved the ability to identify specific variations in DNA which may be responsible for such traits. Thus, in an effort initiated by the Bulldog Club of America and Bulldog Club of America Charitable Health Fund, samples from newborn puppies with anasarca, their parents, and non-affected puppies have been collected, and will be utilized to analyze for a genetic basis of anasarca in an effort to develop a DNA-based test that can be used to screen for and reduce the incidence of this devastating disease. Publication s Hekman, J. S Research. Water Walrus Puppies Anasarca puppies Page 3 "My pup was a singleton , born to my girl who had had a litter the previous year, a litter of 6 normal healthy English Cocker Spaniel pups. This time we used the son of the boy we used last year. This was only his second litter too. His first a healthy litter of 8 pups. Sadly the pup was severely affected, as the pictures show. First and foremost, I would like to thank you for all of the valuable information I found on your website. While re-reading your posted information I came across the section on Water Puppies, and after being told that an x-ray showed that my female was carrying one puppy that appeared to be twice as large as the others, and what I thought to be a strange shiny look to her breast and nipple area, I began to worry. I contacted my daughter who will be a Dr. She explained that the occurrence of "Water Puppies" is rare and that I need not worry as pups of the same litter are often many different sizes. Maybe it was a coincidence that I came upon your site and all of the information you provided on "what to do when things go wrong".In June my female Labrador delivered three healthy pups followed by a "Water Puppy" which was very large and she was having great difficulty pushing her out. I followed the advice and " feathered " her cervix to see if it would help her labor progress, and it was almost instantly helpful. The fourth puppy water puppy was born dead, her skin was so swollen that it was split about her belly and across her face, it also appeared that she may have also had a clef palate. The fifth pup was born healthy with no complications. My own veterinarian had never heard of this before, and neither had my brother-in-law who is also a vet. I have included a picture that I took of the "Water Puppy" four hours after birth so you may share it with your readers. The swelling had decreased considerably and absorbed into the white towel that I had wrapped her in. This is a French Bulldog male puppy. He was delivered via c-section and lived about 30 minutes. I believe, according to the Dr. Never in my long-time practice have I seen anything like this. The mother dog did not have any unusual signs of any kind during pregnancy. Male French Bulldog water puppy that lived about 30 minutes after delivery Male French Bulldog water puppy that lived about 30 minutes after delivery I bred my French Bulldog two years ago and she too had a water pup. She only had two puppies, one was perfectly fine and the other was a water puppy. Since we were already planning a C-section birth, we already knew there was a water puppy. The vet and his staff worked feverishly to revive this pup. Miraculously, the puppy made it and actually started to nurse. However, we noticed right away he could not keep the milk down. Every time it nursed, milk would come back up out of his nose and mouth. The vet took an X-ray and unfortunately found a really terrible birth defect; the esophagus was not connected to the stomach so the milk had nowhere to go but back out. My heart just sank knowing what a fighter this puppy was to be able to come out of that first ordeal of being a water puppy and now we had to put him down humanely so he would not starve to death. I too was put off from breeding after this as I got so attached to this puppy in such a short amount of time. Thank you again to everyone who shared their stories as I am still so sad from that event but know I'm certainly not alone. However, take heart, the other puppy is doing so well that he's even being shown and has won some ribbons to date! Pregnant dams need lots of water, as the amniotic fluid is constantly changing. Water babies are like babies that become anemic low blood in utero. They get severely edematous. This is usually due to parvovirus or an immune response blood group incompatibility. Image of a newborn water puppy— MistyTrails plays "midwoof" to many local breeders. Water Puppy Syndrome Edema:an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in various organs, cavities, or tissues of the body. We can learn a bit from "people" medicine—water babies hydrops usually occurs from lack of red blood cells in the baby as a result of an infection or immune reaction. It can affect only one pup in a litter or the entire litter. Water puppies are impossible to deliver naturally, as they are huge, swollen, waterlogged puppies. A C-section is a must, as these puppies are generally two to four times the size of their littermates. These pups range from mild, medium to severely affected. If your dam is pushing on a single puppy, has contractions for two hours without puppy presentation into the birth canal, especially after delivering one or two normal pups, you should seek veterinary assistance, as the remaining pups can die along with the dam. This is a Medical Emergency! There are many opinions on why these water pups develop; some say it is congenital or environmental, some say diet, trauma to the dam, or even a virus. The condition is also occasionally seen in other dog breeds. An x-ray does not always show the larger size of these puppies, as the weight is mostly fluid. An ultrasound is thought to detect these puppies. Water pups are usually born alive, limp and weak, and they look like someone blew them up like a balloon. The dam was supplying the needed oxygen and nutrition through the placenta and cord, but soon after birth the medium to severely affected pup will suffocate by the pressure of the fluid. Some people report the mildly affected pups that survive the first two to three days turned out to be normal pups. Others say there were other underlying problems and their water pups died within the first week. The choice to try and save or to let the pup go without suffering will be between you and your vet, how much experience you have behind you, and if you are willing to put in the time PLUS be prepared for heartache. Trying to save these pups at this time is considered experimental. The cause and treatment of this condition are unknown at this time. Treatment: Treatment needs to be given right away for a mildly affected pup. Elevate the head and extend the neck for a more clear airway. To encourage urination, run one or two fingers over the genitalia. Some veterinarians have recently had great success using Lasix in saving water puppies. Lasix is the brand name of the chemical furosemide. Furosemide is a diuretic-saluretic, which inhibits the re-absorption of sodium salt. The drug is administered intravenously immediately after birth of the water puppy. Administer furosemide Lasix. Caution: more than three could cause dehydration. Keep the pups warm and stimulate urination as described above every —two to three minutes. Elastic bandages have also been used to push out fluid not too tight. Mildly affected pups can take one to two hours to breathe normally. Moderately affected pups take 90 minutes to four hours to breathe normally. Medium to severely affected pups are difficult to save; they usually drown within 30 minutes. Severely bloated pups have been known to split open at the abdomen just from handling. Autopsies have shown that the organs are saturated in fluid and the life sustaining organs cannot function, causing the pups to drown. Theories: An inuterine reaction to sodium, or an inability to process proteins. Hypothyrodism, as well as an inability of the lymphmatic system to drain effectively due to the anatomy. None of these ideas have ever been proven. Water puppies are often seen associated with a combination of vertebral column defects and often have further abnormalities, particularly cleft palates. Some Findings on Causes still not proven Congenital anasarca congenital generalized subcutaneous edema. The etiology of congenital anasarca is not well defined prenatal cardiovascular anomaly A traumatic origin with disruption of the placenta as a fetus suffering from anasarca is usually the sole occupant of a uterine horn filled with a large amount of hemorrhagic fluid. Could be caused by a virus, it has been attributed to the after-effects of the mother's oronasal infection with the minute virus during the last trimester of pregnancy associated with myocarditis. In the latter case, elasticity of the fetus' skin allows extravasation of transudate that is compensated for by the immediate supply of fluid via the umbilical cord. These puppies usually die within less than 36 hours. Prevention Low-salt diet. Reduce potential trauma isolate pregnant dams Autogenous minute virus vaccine in the case of suspicion of minute virus anarsarca en-zootic within the same breeding facility According to doctors, human babies can be born with this too. Human version: Fetal hydrops the cause is not yet known, but there are many theories In humans, edema is considered a congenital syndrome that happens in utero, and doctors figure it is most often caused by a virus slap cheek virus, and a human parvo-type virus B or it can be caused by a liver malfunction. In the U. Figures from Thailand suggest an estimated incidence of one case per , pregnancies. It is not a labor-induced issue, it happens prenatally for unknown reasons. There are photos of dwarf looking puppies that may fall into this category. If you suspect your dam may deliver water puppies consult your vet. Courtesy of MistyTrails Havanese.

poodle puppies for sale charlotte nc - The Boodle is a mix between the purebred Poodle and the purebred Pitbull. While crossbreed dogs are quite popular these days, Pitbull Poodle Mix dogs remain somewhat rare in the canine kingdom. For this reason, finding a Pitbull Poodle Mix puppy could prove difficult. The good news is that with patience, research, and dedication you should be able to find one of these curly cuties through a reputable source you can trust. But is a Pitbull Poodle Mix really the hybrid dog for you? As with all dogs, there is quite a bit you should consider if you are considering investing in this type of crossbreed. Sometimes known as the French Poodle, the Poodle is actually a German dog bred specifically for water retrieving. A natural athlete, the Poodle soon made his way to France where he worked as a street performer and circus dog. This dog is the ideal dog for those who struggle with allergies. Today, doodle hybrids are some of the most popular cross breed dogs in the canine kingdom. And because modern-day Poodles come in three size varieties, you can find a broad range of Poodle mix dogs in different weights per your specific needs. One thing all Poodles do have in common, experts agree, is their incredible intelligence, their affinity for people, and their athleticism. The term Pitbull is a broad term used to describe a number of different breeds that all fall under the bully breed category. Some Pitbull types are not recognized as true breeds by major breed clubs like the American Kennel Club, though most Pitbull enthusiasts agree that there are varying differences between pitbull type dogs as a whole. Unfortunately, PItbull dogs were originally red for blood sports and bull-baiting, which lead to these dogs having an unfortunate reputation as aggressive. The truth is, most studies have found that Pitbulls are actually very people-oriented, eager to please, and family-friendly. As with all dogs, Pitbulls need routine training and socialization to grow up happy and healthy, and this will also be true for any Pitbull mix you might come across. Pitbulls are highly intelligent and trainable, and they are best suited for active dog owners and dedicated dog owners who are willing to take the time to train, socialize, and exercise their Pitbull or Pitbull mix properly. There is some controversy surrounding crossbreed dogs like the Boodle mix. Hybrid dogs like the Pitbull Poodle Mix are not considered purebred dogs, though they are also not considered mutts. Instead, these types of dogs belong to their own category known as crossbreeds, mixed breeds, hybrids, or designer dogs. These are dogs that are the specifically chosen offspring of two purebred parent breeds. Unfortunately, modern-day crossbreeding is somewhat controversial. Although the practice has been ongoing for centuries, it has only recently become a popular trend among dog lovers and breeders over the last two decades. This trend has led to a variety of mixed-breed dogs, many of them Doodle mixes , that are being bred and sold for as much and sometimes more than their purebred counterparts. Purebred dogs, while often considered wildly overbred, do have the benefit of predictability when it comes to their appearance, temperament, and overall health. Crossbreed dogs, on the other hand, are less predictable when considering these traits. Another part of the controversy has to do with the idea of hybrid vigor. Hybrid vigor is the idea that crossbreed dogs may actually be healthier than purebred dogs thanks to their widened gene pool, which could mean they are less likely to inherit specific genetic health issues from one parent breed over the other. Of course, there are also those who point out that crossbreed dogs like the Pitbull Poodle Mix may be less healthy and more at risk, especially considering they have a wider gene pool to contend with. Whichever side of the fence you stand on, there are a few things you should consider before considering a crossbreed dog like the Pitbull Poodle Mix. First, temperament, appearance, and health will be left up to chance and genetics. This is especially true if your Pitbull Poodle Mix is an early generation crossbreed. Second, not all breeders who breed and sell crossbreed dogs are reputable. Are you wondering if the Pitbull Poodle Mix makes a good family dog? Then wonder no more! This crossbreed has the potential to make a fabulous family dog and is likely to get along well with children and other pets when well trained and socialized. Some Pitbull dogs may be prone to dog-on-dog aggression if not properly trained, though this can be worked with and Pitbull Poodle mix dogs are quite trainable. In fact, the Pitbull Poodle mix is likely to have an affinity for children. These dogs are energetic and athletic, plus they are sturdy and robust enough to enjoy playtime in a yard with youngsters. We recommend helping children learn basic canine body language so they can better understand when their dog is happy, playful, stressed, or fearful. It is also important to never leave young children alone or unsupervised with your family dog. Training should be done using positive reinforcement training techniques that utilize treats and praise. Socialization, the process of introducing your dog to a variety of different experiences like people, places, environments, sights, sounds, and other animals, should also begin as early as possible. If your dog has allergies, which many Pitbull Poodle mix dogs do we recommend staying away from poultry-based treats and instead choosing liver, sweet potato, rabbit, or salmon. We should also note here that the Pitbull Poodle mix dog is best suited for those who have large yards where their dog is able to run and play freely. The Pitbull Poodle mix is a high-energy dog that requires routine exercise, and this could be overwhelming for some owners. So, how can you properly exercise a Pitbull Poodle Mix? Keep reading to find out! Exercise is important for all dogs no matter their breed, size, or age. However, for a high-energy dog like the Pitbull Poodle Mix, routine exercise and mental stimulation are a MUST to ensure your dog is living his healthiest, happiest life. The proper exercise for a Pitbull Poodle mix will consist of one to two good walks a day. These walks should be half an hour to an hour or so long for each outing. The Pitbull Poodle mix may also enjoy hiking, jogging, and swimming. Remember, the Poodle specifically was a bred water retrieving dog, and if introduced to the water correctly your Pitbull Poodle mix could learn to love lakes, pools, and even the ocean! We should also point out here that the PItbull Poodle mix comes from two breeds that do have a high prey drive. For this reason, the Boodle dog can be prone to taking off after smaller animals when out and about out of instinct. Avoid aversive walking equipment like choke chains or prong collars and instead stick with no-pull harnesses and collars that help to teach your dog ideal walking manners when utilized with praise and treats. This harness fits your dog naturally and helps reduce choking or pressure on his throat or trachea. And because it clips in the front, it reduces the pressure put on the chest which could encourage your dog to try and pull ahead on walks naturally. This harness is adjustable and even comes in different colors! Along with ensuring you have the proper walking equipment to exercise your dog with, we also suggest investing in some toys and tools to help keep your dog mentally stimulated. Without proper mental stimulation, the Pitbull Poodle mix can be prone to boredom which can lead to behavioral issues like stress, boredom, chewing, barking, marking, and anxiety. You also have the option of investing in puzzle toys to help keep your Pitbull Poodle mix active and engaged. The Pitbull Poodle mix is a cross between two very different-looking purebred dogs. The Pitbull is a shedding dog that has a smooth coat and sheds moderately year-round. The Poodle, on the other hand, is a hypoallergenic dog that sheds much less and produces much less dander than most of its other canine counterparts. While we do recommend doodle mix dogs for those who struggle with allergies, it should be noted here that getting a hypoallergenic Pitbull Poodle mix could be hit or miss. If he is more like his Poodle parent in appearance, his coat could have the potential to grow out long and become tangled or matted. Because the Pitbull Poodle mix dog is not eligible for show, you may opt to have his coat kept in a puppy cut. Puppy cut hairstyles are much easier to manage in dogs like Pitbull Poodle mix dogs as they are easier to maintain. Luckily, the Pitbull Poodle Mix should not require bathing too often, and will only need to be washed with a dog-safe shampoo once every four weeks or so. This shampoo is so gentle in fact that you can use it on puppies or on dogs who are struggling with bug bites or hot spots. The shampoo is made with natural ingredients that soothe and hydrate the skin , and help to alleviate allergies, itchiness, and irritations. It also smells great and is made with lavender, jojoba oil, eucalyptus oil, and other soothing ingredients that reduce inflammation, itching, and doggy odor. The Pitbull Poodle mix is a healthy dog overall, but there are some gentic health issues he could be predisposed to. The Pitbull Poodle mix dog has a decent lifespan of between 9 and 15 years. He may also have the benefits of hybrid vigor, which can reduce his chances of suffering from certain genetic health issues from one parent breed over the other. Of course, like all dogs, the Pitbull Poodle Mix can be prone to any of the same genetic health issues of his purebred parent breeds. While it can be difficult to predict just what a crossbreed dog like the Pitbull Poodle mix could be predisposed to, it can help to take a look into the health issues of his parent breeds. Today, we will talk about a Pitbull Poodle mix, a cross that is a unique designer breed. It is a cross between an American Pit Bull terrier and any of the Poodle sizes. But it is not easy to predict how the dog will turn out to be. Nickname Pit Boodle, this friendly, affectionate, and loving dog is an amazing family pet. This puppy is naturally gentle and sweet, well-suited to active family life. While it is generally known as Pit Boodle, some also call it Pitbull Poo. These Poodle mix puppies do not get a bad reputation like the Pitbull. But we have to mention that the American Pit Bull terrier is not aggressive or dangerous like many portray him. When it comes to size and appearance , these mixes are unpredictable. Meet The Parents We have two different characters here, and you will be surprised which one is the friendlier one. Poodle Poodles are famous for their intelligence and ease of training. They are lively, active, and fun-loving dogs. They thrive on attention and can develop anxiety problems if left alone for long periods. Smaller Poodle puppies can be more aggressive and prone to barking. But such is the case with small dogs. Nowadays, this elegant dog is associated with France, but it was originally bred in Germany to hunt. This might surprise you, but Poodles are not as friendly. They are the arrogant dogs of the canine world. They are not interested in socializing with others outside of their family. Here are some common personality traits of a Poodle puppy: Highly intelligent dogs that love to work and train Retain some of their hunting instincts Extremely attached to the family Prone to separation anxiety when left alone for longer periods Active and fun-loving dogs Pit Bull This might come as a surprise, but of the two parent breed dogs, Pitbulls are the friendlier. They are among the most affectionate, loving, and loyal dogs in the canine world. They adore everyone, be it people or animals. This fun-loving Pitbull breed is a loving companion, gentle, and patient with every family member. They were bred to be courageous, and have a bad reputation because of their history. Back in the day, they were bred for participating in dog-fighting sports. But nowadays, the modern Pit Bull dog breed is far from a fighting dog. Life with a Pitbull breed is always an adventure. They are always up for playing and having fun. Here are some common personality traits: Loyal, affectionate, and gentle with every family member Full of energy and always up for an adventure They might be stubborn at times Always have a smile on their face Spread positivity in the household Appearance We said before that appearance is difficult to predict. How the Poodle Pitbull mix will look depends on several factors, and the size of the Poodle parent is one of them. Poodles are built differently than Pitbulls. Unlike Poodles, Pit Bull puppies are muscular. On the other hand, Poodle puppies are slender and look elegant. The build of the Pitbull Poo depends on which genes it will inherit. It is hard to predict the looks of this puppy. If it takes after the Poodle, it grows into a leaner form with long and skinny legs. And if it inherits genes from the American PitBull terrier, it will grow into a muscular build with a boxy silhouette. The coat is often inherited from the Poodle parent, and it is thick and curly. In very rare cases, it might inherit the short and smooth coat of the Pitbull. Yet, generally, this Pitbull Poodle Mix puppy can grow to be a medium-sized dog. The fully grown pet can grow between 18 and 24 inches and weigh between 40 and 70 pounds. Temperament Both Poodles and Pitbull Terriers are loving and energetic family companions. But they also have distinctive tendencies. The Poodle is a bit more dignified and aloof, while the Pitbull is friendly, people-oriented, and playful. Both are remarkably loyal and bond with their family instantly. Pitbulls are sometimes known as nanny dogs, and it is all because of their loving personality. With that in mind, Standard Poodle mix puppies are loving, friendly, remarkably loyal, and playful. They are less dignified than their Poodle parent but not as friendly as their Pitbull parent. They must receive early socialization to make sure they can thrive around other animals and people outside of their family circle. But the good thing is they have a keen desire to please, which can help in training. Training The good news is that this mixed puppy is highly trainable. Their intelligence, keen desire to please, and loyal personality makes them easy to train. You can train them easily as long as you are patient and understanding. We talked about socialization. It is vital to do it at an early age because it will help them grow to be friendly to people and other animals. The good news is that your pet will pick up commands and cues easily and quickly. Exercise Needs As we said before, you are working with an energetic puppy here. Poodle mix puppies need quite a lot of physical exercise and mental stimulation. Speaking of physical exercise, your dog will need between 60 and 90 minutes of it. You can play plenty of games, or take your puppy hiking, jogging, or other outdoorsy activities. But make sure to add some mental stimulation to daily exercise as well. The Poodle parent is quite intelligent, and they need to exercise their brain. Remember, Poodles were bred to be working dogs. So, work them! Is The Breed Hypoallergenic? One of the reasons why people nowadays want Poodle mix puppies is to get a hypoallergenic dog. One of the signature features is they do not shed. Will your mix shed or not? Well, it depends on which coat genes it will inherit. If your dog has a coat similar to the Poodle parent, you will spend a lot of time brushing, but there will be no dog hair around. If your dog inherits more of the Pit Bull gene, you will spend less time brushing, but more time cleaning around the home. Health Issues Crossbreeds suffer from fewer health issues compared to purebred dog breeds. One of the reasons for mixing dogs is to reduce the risk of health issues. Selecting breeding between purebred dogs narrows the gene pool, and that can result in a lot of genetic defects. Your Poodle Pitbull mix can suffer from some of the conditions that both parents have. Those include hip dysplasia, bloat, ear infections, heart disease, and obesity. But the good news is that the percentage of the risk is a lot lower. Each dog breed has its downsides and upsides. Here are some downsides of owning this Poodle Pit mixed breed. This can be avoided by ensuring your Pitbull Poodle Pitbull mixes get at least 45 minutes to an hour of exercise each day. They can become aggressive and frustrated if they don't get enough exercise. This Boodle's curly coat collects fur and dander rather than letting it shed. This coat can be prone to mats and tangles, so you should brush him daily to keep him clean and shiny. Wooly Boodles will need to be bathed more often than other dogs. Tightly curly hair traps dirt, debris, and other waste. Pitbulls can be passed on to Pit Boodles the same way a Pitbull can adopt their Pitbull parent. A Pitbull-like Pitbull Boodle will have a smoother coat. He will lose, but he will require less care. The puppy can live for several weeks without bathing and tolerates weekly brushing. Whatever the situation, you should use mild, gentle shampoo for your Boodle. To avoid excessive earwax buildup, brush his teeth at least once a week and clean his ears. Also, be sure to trim their nails as long as possible. Long nails can restrict a puppy's movement and gait. Pit Boodles don't always get the curly coat of the Poodle. Expect moderate shedders if your Pitbull puppy inherits the Pitbull coat. Curly hair keeps loose hair from floating around, allowing him to stick to his fur instead. To get rid of loose hair, your Boodle must brush his teeth daily. Your dog's size, age, and activity level will affect his diet. A veterinarian can help you determine how much food your Pit-Poodle should eat daily. Avoid giving leftover Pitbull Poodle Mix, especially fatty foods and foods high in salt, sugar, and spices. Consuming such foods can lead to toxic effects and long-term health problems, including obesity and high cholesterol. Instead, always feed your puppy natural canine food. It's also essential to make sure your Boodle eats slowly. Bloating can lead to serious health problems. This can be avoided by dividing their daily meals into two parts. To prevent them from eating too quickly, you can buy food bowls. Pitbull Poodle Mix Common Health Problems The Pitbull poodle mix is not purebred and does not have the same genetic health issues as its parents. That doesn't mean you should blindly buy them. Always ask about the parent's health exam and medical records before purchasing a Boodle puppy. These diseases are common in both parent breeds. So let's find out what they are. This can lead to hip dysplasia in puppies. Before buying a puppy, ensure the parents do not suffer from hip dysplasia. These family-friendly dogs are a great choice for those who suffer from allergies related to pet hair or dander. Grooming needs might differ based on the specific coat inherited by your Boodle, so some level of maintenance could still be required such as brushing or occasional trimming especially if your pup has longer hair similar to poodles. The short answer for this is yes, Poodle Pitbull mixes can be very friendly. Although both Poodles and American Pitbull Terriers are loving, energetic, family companions, each breed has distinctive tendencies, and every dog its own unique personality. Whereas Poodles tend to be a bit more dignified, intelligent, and aloof, Pitbull breeds are usually more people-oriented, playful, and eager to please. Because both of these breeds have a loyal and protective nature, Poodle Pitbull mixes are prone to being shy around strangers and can be known to bark, though they are rarely aggressive in any way. This makes it especially important that they receive plenty of socialization and basic training beginning in their puppyhood and continuing throughout their lives. With keen intelligence and a desire to please, this mixed breed is highly trainable, but because they tend to be sensitive, you should mainly rely on positive reinforcement when training and interacting with them. Just like people, dogs will have unique exercise requirements based on their genetics, diet, size, gender, and overall health. Both standard Poodles and American Pitbull Terriers are active breeds that need plenty of daily exercise, so you should expect that your Poodle Pitbull mix will need the same. A post shared by Dani Marie wild. Pitbulls have an abundance of stamina and both of these breeds have a lot of energy and drive, so they will require regular moderate exercise to stay happy and healthy. Poodle Pitbull mixes can have a high-maintenance curly coat with minimal shedding or a sturdy, short coat that requires weekly brushing. Pitbull breeds like American Pitbull Terriers, on the other hand, have a very easy coat to care for since their fur is quite short and sheds frequently. Similar to Poodles, American Pitbull Terriers have a single coat, and their fur sheds whenever the hair has reached its genetically determined length before dying and falling out. Being brushed once or twice a week is typically plenty and bathing is only necessary when the dog is visibly dirty. Even the healthiest of dogs can be prone to conditions or illnesses, and your Pit Boodle will be no exception. Gastric Dilatation Volvulus, usually known as Bloat, is another dangerous condition in which the gut and internal organs become twisted, resulting in cellular damage or even organ death. Some sources mention that as much as half of all standard Poodles also suffer from Sebaceous Adenitis, which causes the immune system to attack the sebaceous oil glands and skin, leaving dandruff, thick or scaly skin, hair loss, and skin infections. American Pitbull Terriers, although typically robust and hearty, are still prone to several different health concerns. One of the biggest issues for the average Pitbull is allergies; food allergies and allergies to materials like grass or dust are very common. Another health concern for Pitbulls is their increased likelihood of having heart issues like congenital heart disease as well as murmurs or irregular heartbeats. Hypothyroidism is another very serious issue for many Pitbulls, characterized by a lack of thyroxine, causing secondary issues like lethargy, muscle loss, weight gain, infections, and hair loss. You can expect your standard Poodle Pitbull mix to be between inches cm tall and weigh around pounds kg. As with many other physical factors of designer dogs, predicting the expected size of your dog may prove difficult. Standard Poodles are known as medium to large-sized dogs. Their adult height is usually inches tall at the shoulder, with the males typically on the larger end of the spectrum. Similarly, where female Poodles generally weigh between 45 and 60 pounds, males can weigh anywhere from 45 to 70 pounds. This breed has a square frame, long slender legs, and elegant features. American Pitbull Terriers are usually considered medium-sized dogs, largely due to their stocky body type. Females are typically inches tall, while males are only fractionally larger at inches tall. Pitbulls can weigh anywhere from 30 to 85 pounds, depending mostly on their family line rather than their gender. Depending on which parent the dog takes after most will best determine their estimated lifespan. Generally speaking, you can expect a Pitbull Poodle mix to reach years with two years more or less definitely being possible. Across the board, most rescues, expert sources, and breed associations agree that standard Poodles generally live between years. American Pitbull Terriers, on the other hand, have a wide variety of expectations; with most claiming they usually live 8 years. This discrepancy of the statistics may have something to do with the abuse and suffering which was often fatal in Pitbulls who were forced to fight for their lives. Are Poodle Pitbull Mixes Expensive? Like other designer dogs, this mixed breed can greatly vary in pricing depending on their breeder and location. Because there are no breed standards or breed associations in place, breeders can charge as much as people are willing to pay for their Pit Boodle puppies. Many of these puppies are coming from irresponsible or inexperienced breeders, who may or may not be acting ethically. Pitbull mixes are sadly plentiful in shelters, it may be harder to find one mixed with a Poodle though. Just like other pets, having a dog can be quite expensive when you consider all the costs involved. If you start with just the normal base expenses, that will probably include food, bedding, toys, and treats. Even more costly is veterinary care such as wellness checks, vaccines, and preventative care for your furry friend. In the end, though, keeping a member of your family happy and healthy for the many years to come is worth every penny. Make sure to read up about everything you need to know about a potential new family member. Opt to stick to dog food pellets, soft meat, etc. Bloating: this is a common thing among different breeds. Bloating leads to gastric dilatation-volvulus if not addressed immediately and may lead to death. Hip dysplasia: Poodles are prone to have joint dysplasia most commonly in the hip and pelvic area. This occurrence happens when joints pop out of the socket, causing immense pain for the hybrid. Pitbull Crossed With Poodle Food Requirements Make it a point to ensure and prioritize the type of food you allow your dog to eat because this will significantly affect its longevity of life and health status. Take note of the size and needs of each breed it came from so you may plan a specific diet for your hybrid. Treats are good for training as well but refrain from making it a daily habit to lessen weight gain. Make sure you choose snacks that have low caloric content. Take note of the nutrients needed to ensure a proper diet. Always choose foods that are rich in protein, as they are high energy dogs. Make sure to avoid typical dog allergens such as wheat, corn, and potatoes. Your dog might be prone to skin diseases as well, and its best to strictly follow feeding instructions. Pitbull Poodles Exercise Requirements Your boodle is a product of two very different breeds: one is highly active, and the other focuses more on the intellectual aspect so it would be best to choose equipment or toys that can exercise them physically, as well as train their minds and awaken their sensitivity. Make sure you schedule play time with your dogs, whether its walking or running or playing in the park to ensure that they have a healthy lifestyle. You can also incorporate exercise in your home. Try playing hide and seek or fetch in your backyard, anything to keep your dog going and panting. Physical and mental exercises are essential to avoid putting your boodle in an idle state, which can lead to depression, boredom, and destruction. Try your best to plan any form of activity that will keep your pups active physically and mentally. To improve your exercise regimen, here are some toys you can purchase: Canine Hardware Chuckit! Classic Launchers: This is perfect for the non-athletic, stay at home type of owners. This product is also ideal for the energetic side of your hybrid, without giving you the sore arm from repeatedly throwing the ball. FluffyPal Chew Toys For Puppies Small Dogs And Medium Dogs: This product is an all-in-one type because it can be a teething toy which can remove tartar, a potential favorite toy, and it also has a vanilla scent to counter any dog drool smell. Not only does it exercise your hybrid, but it also teaches it about rewards and positive outcomes when they follow a command. Hear Doggy! With the balanced need for exercise, you can choose to specify activities that will enhance their physical and mental abilities. Make sure you have enough space for them to run around and play. So this can be a bit of a challenge because you need to exercise both aspects. Pit bulls tend to exercise wanting the alpha position, which needs training that involves firmness, confidence, and a strong will. A poodle is an intelligent type and will be a bit challenging to train, so they need more patience and understanding. Always start training once you establish what you want and need for your pup. Train your puppies before reaching a year old, starting from simple commands until more difficult ones. Here are tips to make training easier for your boodle: Plan What You Want To Teach: To avoid confusion for your dog, make sure you have a plan as to what commands you want your dog to learn. Schedule Shorter Sessions: The reason for this is to have a higher attention span. If you think long sessions bore your hybrid, cut them down to at least 30 minutes to an hour to ensure, you have their full attention. Practice Positive Reinforcement: a poodle is an intelligent breed, and they remember when you praise them for doing something right. They tend to be shy and aggressive towards new people, which might be the case for your boodle. You can visit the vet and ask for tips, or you can bring them to the park until they familiarize themselves with different people and dogs as well. Potty Training: This is an essential type of training for almost all dogs. It saves you effort and money, and it also lessens the stress of accidentally stepping on unwanted stuff. Throughout history, pit bulls are known and recognized as dangerous and aggressive. On the other hand, poodles require mental stimulation and constant socialization. A mix of the two breeds will still require socialization training. Your pitbull poodle mix can be stubborn at times, but they are also easy to train. Make it a habit to remind family members that your dog needs to exercise, so that you can take turns as to who will take the dog out for a walk. Having a big space is ideal for the energetic side of your dog. Pitbulls are a medium-sized breed with a muscular build and short, smooth coats. They typically weigh between 30 and 70 pounds and stand between 17 and 21 inches tall at the shoulder. Poodles are a breed of dog in three sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Standard Poodles are the largest of the three and typically weigh between 45 and 70 pounds and stand between 15 and 24 inches tall at the shoulder. Miniature Poodles are smaller, weighing 15 and 17 pounds and standing between 11 and 15 inches tall at the shoulder. Finally, toy Poodles are the smallest, weighing between 6 and 9 pounds and standing between 10 and 11 inches tall at the shoulder.
