Will your dog be comfortable going to new locations and seeing new people and possibly other dogs without pulling at the leash or barking? From there, work your way up to garden centers, smaller hardware stores and feed stores, then finally boutiques and large often noisy home centers. Visit at a quiet time. No barking. Your dog needs to be able to politely walk the aisles at your side without barking at other shoppers, merchandise, or another dog in the store. Give other shoppers plenty of room. Move out of the way of other shoppers and carts, keeping your dog at your side on a short leash. Remember that everyone may not love your dog. Introduction Australia has an owned dog and cat population of approximately 4. In addition, the ownership of an animal may be transferred through sale or other trade, and animals in a shelter or pound can be rehomed. This results in a complex network of animals transferred between the owned and un-owned populations, and between different owners. Animals leave the care of their owners through being lost, surrenders to a shelter or pound, being abandoned, being given away or being sold. Worldwide, there have been attempts to measure the un-owned population of dogs and cats in shelters [ 2 , 3 ], but there is a lack of research into the dogs and cats that are transferred between owners and between owned and un-owned populations in other ways. Much of what we know about the flow of animals from the owned and un-owned populations comes from rescue shelters and pounds. Larger rescue organizations collect data on numbers of surrendered dogs and cats each year. In contrast, there were 45, dogs admitted to RSPCA shelters in the same year and numbers are declining [ 4 ]. There is no data available estimating the total numbers of stray and surrendered cats in Australia, although it is likely to be even higher. The incidence of unowned dogs and cats is a worldwide problem, with an estimated , dogs and , cats entering UK shelters in [ 3 ], and a study from South Korea reporting over 10, abandoned dogs in Seoul [ 5 ]. In the US, it was estimated that 4. The relinquishment of pets represents a significant cost to society in a number of ways. While local government costs include dog registrations and dealing with dog attacks, a large portion of these figures would be expected to arise from stray and relinquished animals. As well as the economic costs there are also emotional costs as people may be forced to relinquish their pets due to external influences, such as a relationship breakdown or inability to find rental accommodation that will allow a pet [ 10 , 11 ]. There are also emotional costs experienced by staff involved in euthanizing large numbers of pets at shelters, with shelter workers struggling with the moral dilemma of their job, often resulting in mental health problems and high staff turnover [ 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Finally, un-owned dogs and cats are at an increased risk of impaired welfare using both physical and psychological measures of welfare [ 15 , 16 ], as well as the emergence of diseases, demonstrated by an outbreak of virulent systemic feline calicivirus in cats [ 17 ], and of Streptococcus equi pneumonia in dogs [ 18 ]. If we are to design evidence-based strategies to reduce the numbers of dogs and cats relinquished, as well as protect the welfare of pets in which relinquishment cannot be avoided, we need to know more about the population of dogs and cats involved. Some shelters survey owners who are relinquishing pets to determine their reasons for relinquishment [ 19 , 20 ], and also collect demographic data on the age, sex and breed of the relinquished animal [ 4 , 19 , 20 ]. While this information is not perfect for example, owners may not be truthful about the behavior of their pet if they think it will negatively impact the likelihood of that pet finding a new home , it has been helpful in designing interventions. For instance, knowing that sometimes pets are relinquished because owners cannot find rental accommodation that allows pets has resulted in real changes, with the Australian state of Victoria recently announcing modifications to rental agreements to make it easier for people to rent with pets [ 21 ]. Pets are given away or sold through advertisements in newspapers, bulletin boards and using the internet. In Australia, Gumtree [ 22 ] has the highest volume of online ads for dogs and cats, followed by Trading Post [ 23 ]. Breeders of purebred dogs also advertise on DogzOnline [ 24 ], although this site represents a smaller number of animals compared to Gumtree and Trading Post. These online sites advertise both puppies and kittens being sold by a breeder, and animals being relinquished. There has been limited research into online trading of dogs and cats. To our knowledge, no published studies have focused on pets being relinquished online. Materials and Methods 2. Extraction of Data Data from Gumtree were collected over approximately three weeks for both dogs and cats: 8, 17 and 25 February for dogs and 9, 19 and 26 February for cats. Data were extracted using the BeautifulSoup module in Python Version 3. There were 50 random ads used for both dogs 1. Data on neuter, microchip and vaccination status were not collected as a minority of ads reported on these factors. Many ads request a sum of money for the pet, even when it appears the pet is being relinquished. Dogs were defined as being relinquished if: 1 there was a statement within the ad confirming that a new home was being sought e. He is very friendly and good with other dogs and children. It is possible that some very small shelters were advertising as an owner rather than as a shelter, but there was no way to differentiate these types of sellers. Both owner and breeder categories were included as there were some breeders who were relinquishing pets using the above criteria e. My intentions were to bread sic them but things have changed. The same criteria were used to determine a cat being relinquished. In some ads there was more than one animal advertised. In those cases, data was collected only from the first animal mentioned in the ad e. Surveys of Owners Who Had Relinquished Dogs or Cats An email was sent through Gumtree informing people about the study that we were conducting and asking if they would be willing to participate. Ads were chosen from those available online using the criteria for identifying a relinquished dog, outlined above. These were selected starting from the first ads shown on each day. Due to the high numbers, not all ads for relinquished dogs or cats were included on each day. A total of emails were sent to dog owners between 11 May and 14 June and emails to cat owners between 17 May and 14 June .The owners responded to the email either by return email or by phone. Surveys were performed either on the phone or in written form via email, depending on the preference of the respondent. Participants were also given an open-ended question at the end of the survey to add any other details they wished to share. Statistical Tests Comparisons between groups where the data was not normally distributed were made using Mann-Whitney tests. Categorical data was compared used Chi-square tests. Results 3. Dogs on Gumtree A total of individual ads were identified for dogs being relinquished on Gumtree between 7 and 24 February .There were ads on 7 February, ads on 16 February and ads on 24 February. While they were banned from registration in their native Germany in , North America proved something of a hotbed for these dogs and a breed club was formed for White German Shepherds in .Ash, who owns a White GSD called Ghost, warned prospective owners to be prepared for their dog to be confused for another popular dog breed! You will constantly be asked if your dog is a Husky white fur that is so noticeable, needs a lot of attention, lots of energy. They can become very attached to their dog owners and members of the family. This can translate to them being excellent family dogs! Alyssa highlighted this loyal trait, having firsthand experience with Lumi. White Shepherds are incredibly loyal and great family dogs. They love their families and will do anything to protect them. Because of this, they typically are a bit skeptical of strangers but this can be worked through with proper socialization and training. While German Shepherds can often be incorrectly stereotyped as aggressive dogs, the White GSD tend to have more mellow personalities. Only the Border Collie and the Poodle are considered more intelligent! They should be quick to learn new commands and can be highly obedient dogs. Having said that, sometimes smart dogs can have a stubborn or mischievous streak. Alyssa explained that consistency is key where training White GSD is concerned. White Shepherds are incredibly smart. Just keep at it and make sure to give lots of praise when they exhibit the correct behaviors. With high energy compared to other breeds, they may not be suited to all pet parents. As mentioned before they need a solid amount of exercise and mental stimulation or they can become bored and destructive. You should be prepared for lots of white fur on your clothes, on your furniture and on the floor. Alyssa shed further light on White GSD shedding! If you have issues with shedding, White Shepherds are not for you. White GSDs require regular daily exercise to stretch their legs. Aylssa provided her insight on White German Shepherd exercise. Exercise all depends on the drive and energy level of your dog. German Shepherds on average White Shepherds included need quite a bit of exercise. They can get bored very easily so its important to keep their mind busy. Training sessions also do a great job of keeping them mentally stimulated. They need regular brushing to remove shedded hair and debris from their coat to maintain their overall coat health. Ash underlined the importance of regularly grooming a White GSD. Sometimes the fur can grow back, other times the elbow becomes a little bald patch which can scab if it gets hurt. This unique dog is bred from German Shepherds and carries many of the same characteristics, yet it also carries the recessive white furred coat gene. They are classified as a large dog breed and stand tall at 22 to 26 inches at the shoulder. Again, females are normally shorter than the males. They are a very muscular and athletic breed, which is no surprise because they were bred for their working capabilities. They are very strong and wear a proud posture and have erect ears. Their feet are big too, even when they are puppies! Coat The White German Shepherd has two different types of coat — short coat and long coat. If your White German Shepherd has a long coat, it will typically be much longer than other German Shepherds in the breed. The fur is thick and straight and does require quite a bit of grooming, although we will go into more detail about that below. When they are a puppy, their coat is normally super fluffy. It does become more coarse as they get older, but their ears remain fluffy. Their coat is also a double-coat which helps add protection against harsh winds or rain. Color Of course, the coat color of the White German Shepherd is white! This is what makes them stand out and a unique breed. The white coat recessive gene only impacts the fur color and does not have any effect on their skin or eye pigment. This makes identifying a white German Shepherd very simple and also closely resembles their wolf ancestors. In every other aspect, they mirror the appearance of a standard tan German Shepherd with the same dark brown eyes. They are very protective and make excellent guard dogs or watchdogs. They are also extremely loyal and love to be around people, which makes them a great family dog as well as an excellent working dog. They may also bark at strangers, but this is just because they are trying to protect you! A White Shepherd is an active dog and needs to be mentally stimulated. As we mentioned above, they are originally a working dog and love to be outside running and playing. Lifespan The life expectancy of a White German Shepherd is relatively long. They can live between 12 to 14 years. Many of the problems they are more likely to develop are the same problems that other breeds of German Shepherd deal with. The most common health problem for the German Shepherd dog breed is elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia. Dysplasia is a condition that is seen in many large dogs and is a disease of a malformation of the joints. The joints can become very painful and may worsen over time causing lameness. The best way to ensure your pup is less prone to any of these conditions is to buy from a reputable breeder and to ensure you get health clearances from both parents. You should also check your dog often for any signs of these issues and take them to the vet regularly for checkups. Daily Life Now you know all about the characteristics and traits of this unique German Shepherd breed, it is time to take a look at what daily life with them is like. We will look at what to feed this dog, how much exercise they need and what grooming of this big breed should be. It comes as no surprise that this is a high maintenance dog breed, but they are worth it! It is recommended that you feed them a diet specially formulated for large dog breeds and you should always check the back of the dog food packet to see how much food you should be feeding your doggie based on their weight. Experts recommend that a White German Shepherd should be eating around calories a day, which is around 3 cups of food. As a puppy, they should be fed three times a day which can then be decreased to two meals a day as an adult. However, if you have a busy lifestyle then this can just be one meal a day. Their food should be healthy and nutritious. It should cover all the nutrients that a dog of this size needs, including proteins, fats and carbohydrates. High-quality dry kibble is a great option, although some dog owners opt to feed their pup raw food. Exercise It is not a surprise that this breed of white dog is very active and has high exercise needs. As a working dog and a breed that is often used as a police dog, they need lots of mental and physical stimulation to keep them happy. You should ensure that you are exercising your German Shepherd for 60 to 90 minutes a day. This includes walks, playing and mental games. Your doggie will want a big back yard to run around in too, so they will not be getting the exercise they need if you live in a small apartment. Without adequate exercise, they can develop unwanted and destructive behaviors due to frustration and boredom. Family Compatibility A White Shepherd makes an excellent family dog. Because they are so loyal, they will want to protect you from anything harmful, which makes them an excellent guard dog. However, you will need to train them from a young age to understand that not everything is a threat, otherwise they may well bark for hours! We mentioned above how much exercise a German Shepherd needs. As a working dog, they need lots of physical and mental stimulation, so they are the perfect pet for those who are outside a lot. Your German Shepherd will not thrive in a small apartment as they will feel like they are being cooped up and may begin to exhibit destructive behaviors. This breed does have a naturally high prey drive, so you will need to take care when introducing them to children for the first time. That being said, when socialized properly, White German Shepherds love children and will even take your children under their wing. The older your dog is, the harder it will be to introduce them to new things and people, but it still can be done. They also get on very well with other family pets, so there will be no issue there and they will become a loved family member. Training The White German Shepherd is a very intelligent dog and is therefore very easy to train. Their ease of training means that they make a great family dog as well as a dog for couples or individuals. You should train them from a very young age and always use positive reinforcement. This can include verbal praise and yummy treats to show them that they are doing a good job. German Shepherds can be a little stubborn, so you should never punish them or scold them. They are great detectives too, so hiding treats and getting them to sniff the treats out makes a fun game to play! Grooming Unfortunately, your White German Shepherd will shed all year round. This is because their coat is so thick. One way to minimize shed is to ensure that you brush them at least two to three times a week. Bathing is not necessary often — only when they look dirty. Brushing their teeth is very important to prevent dental decay and gum disease, although you can give them dental chews every day to help keep their teeth clean. One way to ensure that grooming your German Shepherd is not a traumatic experience for them is to begin grooming them from a young age. This will show them that there is nothing to be afraid of. For several reasons not necessarily good reasons , white dogs aren't appreciated by the German Shepherd's national breed club nor by German Shepherd breeders who compete at dog shows. Despite their disapproval, a white puppy who pops up in a litter of German Shepherds can still be registered with the American Kennel Club as a German Shepherd. So if you're considering acquiring an AKC-registered German Shepherd who just happens to be white, you can expect a similar temperament and behavior as if he were a more familiar black and tan color. If you're considering acquiring a UKC-registered White Shepherd, you need to find out whether the breeder's goal was to make the temperament of his dogs the same as or different from normal-colored German Shepherds. White Shepherds are often bred to have a softer, more mellow, more sensitive personality. Because of this sweeter temperament, White Shepherds are seldom used as police dogs, guard dogs, or to participate in protection dog sports such as schutzhund. A White Shepherd can certainly be a very good watchdog, but his "watching" is usually limited to alerting you that someone is coming. White Shepherds are not typically aggressive. A prey drive is an ingrained need to chase after moving objects, whether it is appropriate or not. A swinging hand as we walk by can be extremely tempting for a growing pup, causing them to jump up and nip. If it seems like your Shepherd puppy is always biting you when you are in motion, it may be due to their high prey drive! They Are Curious As we mentioned above, German Shepherd puppies use their mouth to explore the world around them. Biting can help them examine and understand an object, and our hands and feet can fall into that category as well! If you catch your puppy gnawing on everything around your home, it may be their curiosity getting the best of them! A dog quickly learns what behavior gets a reaction, causing them to do it over and over again. Even if their bites result in a negative reaction from you, it still counts as attention. They Are Teething Similar to teething babies, a German Shepherd puppy experiences teething pain as well. If your Shepherd pup seems to find relief when chewing on objects, they may be biting you due to teething discomfort. They Are Herding You If your German Shepherd puppy is constantly biting at your ankles, they may be displaying some herding behaviors. German Shepherds are ingrained with a need to work, especially in dogs with a working bloodline. If your German Shepherd is always nipping at your feet, running to your side when you are moving, or showing signs of anxiety or frustration when you are moving around your home; it may be herding behavior. So how can you stop this normal puppy behavior? Redirect The Behavior One of the most effective ways to stop your German Shepherd puppy from biting is by redirecting the behavior. An effective distraction is a wonderful way to end the behavior without punishment, and show them how much fun the alternative to biting can be. The next time your Shepherd pup is displaying undesirable nipping, try to pull out their favorite toy. Since this will need to be a toy that your dog enjoys, be sure to offer them the option that they find most exciting. This can be a Kong toy , rope, bone, or any other chewing option that your dog loves. By doing this each time your Shepherd puppy begins to bite you, they will begin to understand that they would much rather play with an acceptable chew option. Having a variety of chew toys can alleviate their need to bite our hands and feet, and offer them the relief they seek in this uncomfortable transition. There are so many toys created for teething puppies, that it should be easy to fill your home with plenty of appropriate options. One of our favorite chew toys is the Kong Teething Binkie. Any attention can validate the behavior, causing them to make it a habit. This shows them that the behavior is unacceptable, and does not involve any harmful negative reinforcement. Our attention is important to a puppy, and they do not want to be ignored. By showing them that biting will only result in us pulling away, they will learn to ditch the undesirable behavior. Interrupt The Behavior Sometimes a Shepherd puppy needs a sharp and sudden sound to pull them out of a bad habit. By giving a quick interrupter cue ouch, yip, eek , you can pull your puppy away from the action and gain their attention. Because of this, it is so important to offer plenty of mental and physical activities throughout your home. For example, if your puppy nips at strangers each time they walk in the door, it may be best to limit their time around the guest and send them to a separate play area. Once they begin to understand that biting is unacceptable, you can refrain from using their separate play area as often. Similar to what we discussed above about being proactive, a separate play area can help them calm down and collect themselves. Once your German Shepherd puppy begins to mature and understand that biting is unacceptable, they should require less time away. Just as there are effective methods in canine training, there are counterproductive actions as well. Do Not Hit Or Yell Since biting is a normal behavior that puppies must learn to grow out of, it is not productive to hit or yell at your puppy when they bite. Doing this can show them from a young age that interaction with you results in something negative, and can hinder your training process. By using other distractions and training methods when they bite, you can turn every bite into a learning experience for your pup! This can seem like a fun game to your pup, and can actually encourage the behavior. Try your best to go limp when they bite you, and pull your attention away from the pup. By doing this, you show them that this behavior does not offer them any extra fun. Extra attention can validate their undesirable behavior, making it challenging to break. Try your best to refrain from reacting to a bite outside of your interrupter cue, and pull your attention away from your furry friend afterward. Biting is a normal behavior in puppies of all kinds. Puppies begin to bite their siblings from the moment they can move, and will continue this behavior until they learn otherwise.
