We, and our Frenchies, love the Nylabones — they are made of very durable nylon that will last forever, and our dogs love to chew on them, which is very good for their teeth and gums. One of our favorite toys is braided rope made especially for dogs. Our dogs and puppies have a ball playing tug-a-war and keep-a-way with them. They are very inexpensive they can even be found in most dollar stores and they are extremely durable. The point is to have a nice selection of toys to keep them entertained and out of trouble. Make sure that their toys do not have little parts they could chew off that could get stuck in their throats. Dog shampoo — There are many good dog shampoos on the market and it is really just a matter of personal preference. They can be purchased at any pet store, Walmart, etc. Years ago, when we owned a Yorkie, our vet recommended using baby shampoo because Yorkies tend to frequently get goop around the eyes and the baby shampoo allowed us to clean the area around their eyes without irritating them. We still use baby shampoo with our Frenchies since they have lots of folds on their faces that require regular cleaning. If you do go with a dog shampoo choose a mild formulated shampoo for sensitive skin; your vet may have some good recommendations. In addition to having several good chew toys, which are great for their teeth, you should apply toothpaste to their teeth and gums on a weekly basis. You will notice that it said apply and not brush. Doggie toothpaste has those enzymes. Just put some paste on your finger or a brush and rub it on the teeth and gums. We highly recommend using the kind that has a flat blade on the end of the raking tool versus the kind that has prongs. What we find works best for us is to use a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that is lined with a durable trash bag. The lid keeps foul odors trapped inside. Until our dogs are potty trained, we use old, soft towels and blankets for their bedding, which are very easy to launder. Though it is not a necessity, our dogs love their over-sized pillows and they spend a lot of time sleeping and lounging around on them. Doggie gate same concept as a baby gate — There may initially be areas in your house that you may not want your puppy having free access to roam until completely potty trained. Putting up a doggie gate s will allow your puppy to have a larger area to investigate without getting on carpeted areas or another area you want to make off limits. You can find cute accessories and outfits at pet stores, and there are lots of options on line. Some people do not feel comfortable clipping their dogs nails and will take them to a groomer or vet. However, if you want to save time and money it is a fairly simple task that takes only a few minutes. There are two types of of clippers: a guillotine or a scissor type. The guillotine is the easiest to use. The instructions that come with the clippers will guide you on how to use the instrument. Light claws are easier to cut than dark claws as the blood vessels and nerves that supply the toenail, called the quick, is easier to see. Cut the toenail to within approximately 2 mm of the quick. If you cut into the quick, the toenail will bleed and the dog will experience pain, nothing serious, but they might not sit too still the next time you undertake this task. When cutting dark toenails, it is better to cut just a little off at a time. We do not care for the expandable leashes that allow the puppy to walk way out in front or way off to the side of you. The smallest setting for the collar would be about 8 inches and expanding out from there. We use small carabiners to attach the stretched chain between the collar and the leash. This will prevent your puppy from chewing your new leash. If you are reserving a small size pup then I would suggest an XS collar. Another option while they are very young is a slip leash style. The Lab was a working dog used during hunting pursuits and the hunting fraternity heavily favored the Black Labrador over all other colors. And so red labs were relatively uncommon. But in a reversal of the trend today, in the early days of the breed the more common shades of yellow that existed were dark yellow to fox red. The lighter shades of yellow and cream that we think of as normal today, were actually quite rare. In fact, the first ever registered yellow was a dark golden color. However, through the mid to late s, lighter shades of yellow and cream became more fashionable and breeders sought to selectively breed for these colors. This is mostly my opinion and not concrete fact, but the two theories I have on why the lighter colors of Yellow Labradors became more common are: Firstly, during the early years of the breed the darker yellows and reds were more common. So when a pale cream or very light yellow was born, it seemed more exotic, rarer and hence more desirable. So breeders started to selectively breed for these colors and hence less and less reds were born. Secondly, since the middle s, a famous brand of British toilet paper, Andrex has used a pale Yellow Labrador in their television adverts. Their adverts went on to be shown in over countries for over 35 years. Most colors centered on a cream to light golden color. The dark yellows and reds fell out of fashion. But in the last 10 or 15 years, the range of available shades in the Yellow Labrador have once again widened. They stood out among the crowd and so they were more desired. This caused breeders to try to match the demand and selectively breed for lighter colors. Due to a lack of popularity of the dark red coat colors, it all but disappeared. But this new-found rarity in turn made the darker red Labs more desirable. So now there are many breeders who are selectively breeding to try to obtain litters of reds to meet the demand of people who want the rarer color. Things have turned full circle. Controversy Around The Red And Darker Yellow Shades Being uncommon in comparison to the black, paler yellow and chocolate shades does make some people question the red Labradors pedigree. They question whether in fact they are a pure bred Labrador or not? However, unlike the so-called Silver Labrador Retriever that is surrounded by accusations of outcrossing Labradors with Weimaraners to introduce the diluted coat color to the breed, no such controversy surrounds the darker colors of Yellow and Red Labradors. They are a genuine, pure bred Labrador, with a history going back to the earliest days of the breed. Another controversy is the fact that Fox Red Labrador breeders charge a far higher price than breeders do for the more traditional colors of the breed. They advertise their dogs as being a rare breed and charge a premium. There is some truth in this, but this controversy also follows many other breeds and colors of dogs. Are Breeders of Reds Irresponsible? There is some evidence to support this in a very few small cases, but there are some highly responsible breeders too and I think the good do outnumber the bad. Fox red Labrador breeders Labs come in three colors, yellow, chocolate and black. As well as some pale, dilute forms of those colors. The red fox Lab, or fox red Lab, is a dark coated variety of the yellow Labrador Retriever. Breeders are selecting darker red Labrador Retrievers to breed from as they become more popular companions than paler yellow Labs. Sometimes known as the ruby Labrador or fox red Lab, these are smart, energetic dogs are best suited to active owners. Yet at one time, almost all Labradors were black. This was partly due to nature, and partly due to a little human interference. Chocolate and yellow Labs were both harder to breed for and less desirable. Horrifically, yellow or brown puppies were often culled at birth! Yet all three colors of Labrador Retriever, black, chocolate and yellow including the red shade , share the same origins or history. Bred to be hunting companions, with bags of intelligence and a friendly disposition. In recent years, these rarer colors are becoming more popular. Which leads to more people selectively breeding for them. And therefore more dogs being born with these coats. Red Fox English Lab vs American Lab The trend in Labrador coat colors swung to paler and paler colors in the s, and remained that way for decades. Especially among the dog showing community. Fortunately a pool of dark yellow or fox red Labs remained popular in the working sporting dog community. Possibly because a pale yellow dog, being far too easy for wildfowl to spot, is not an ideal hunting companion. American Labs are slimmer built, with less stocky heads and chests. They have a stronger prey drive, are a little less forward and playful. Even today you are unlikely to find a Red Labrador with a show background. Any dog advertised as an English fox red Labrador will probably have a pedigree that is a mix of American and English dogs. It is largely from this pool of working retrievers that we now have the stunning fox red Labrador Retrievers that we see today. And because they are often the American Lab type rather than English Lab type, they are often taller and more athletic in appearance than the paler yellow Labs. And if you live in the USA, you may have to do plenty of detective work to find one at all. You may have more luck looking for an American Lab type, from working lines. They are very intelligent and trainable, with loyal, loving personalities. Although they have the usual Lab friendliness, they can also be a little more nervous and wary of strangers and slightly high strung. Lots of socialization and plenty of attention will keep these dogs happy. Coupled with lots of exercise, and both mental and physical activities to keep them busy. Presumably because breeders are selecting for the popular deeper coat color in order to increase puppy sales. There is a lot of pressure on breeders to produce certain colors. But a responsible breeder should not choose parents purely on the basis of color. Especially when there are not large numbers of fox reds to choose from. You may be tempted to skip this — but give it a go — it might be easier than you think! Think of a Labrador as a basically black dog. Black is the default color. The black coat is caused by a pair of genes called the B genes Your dog inherits one from his mother and one from his father — in a pair — like this: BB B genes come in big or little versions. So a black dog could have a pair that look like this instead: Bb Little b carries the code necessary to make a brown coat instead of a black one. BUT, big B is dominant and switches off little b. So little b only gets a say, if two of them get together like this: bb, and when that happens, you get a chocolate Lab! This is done by two little e genes. They also come in a pair like this: ee And when they get together they have the amazing power to completely block the genes that cause black and brown coats. A lab with two little ee genes cannot have a brown or a black coat and so the coat color now defaults to yellow. Now we are getting closer to our fox red color. E genes can also be big like this: EE or mixed like this: Ee, but when that happens the big E switches off the little e, and takes away its power. Yellow vs Red Fox Lab Coats A red Lab is a variation of yellow, and every red dog has those two essential little e genes that switch off black and brown. But then it starts to get a little bit more complicated. It centers on a pigment called pheomelanin. And it is controlled by two different sets of genes. The A gene controls the production of the red color. And the C gene controls whether or not it is fully expressed or diluted. This is what makes things a little more complicated. In fact, I am still over-simplifying it a bit. Otherwise the B gene will override them. And you are back to black or brown. Fox Red Lab Breeders Your first step when bringing any Labrador into your life should be to make sure that this is the right time for you to do this. The next step is to find a reputable breeder of Labradors. Finding a nice fox red stud dog and making a list of all his recent matings is often a starting point. You are most unlikely to find a good breeder who only breeds fox reds. This is because color is not the top priority for a responsible breeder. And remember, in most yellow litters there will be a range of shades. Puppies may darken as they grow, or they may not. No breeder can guarantee you the final color of your puppy. Make sure that both parents have good hips, elbows and a clear eye test, as well as a PRA clear certificate. Then your pup will have the best chance of growing up healthy. Red Fox Lab Puppy Prices When it first starts to trend, a fashionably colored dog may be more expensive, and this is still happening to some extent with reds. My advice is to be wary of paying an unusually high price for a red lab puppy. It could indicate that you have found an unscrupulous breeder who may be cutting corners on health or other important matters. The reason I say this is because many respectable breeders will look down on selling puppies of different colors for different prices. In fact paying the same price irrespective of color could mean you have a better breeder, and a healthier pup! This shade gets increasingly darker over the first few weeks. By three weeks old they are starting to look much more like the Labrador you know and love. By the time you take them home at 8 weeks old they will have that lovely fox red shade. Not all the puppies in a litter will be the same shade, even if both of their parents are fox red themselves. Just like any other Labrador, it will be important to dedicate their first few weeks in your home to getting them settled. Starting to work on important things like potty training and setting food habits. They really benefit from positive reinforcement training. Using rewards to help encourage them to behave in a way that will help them to fit nicely into your family. Start off with no more than a few minutes of formal exercise a day when they are small puppies. And work up to any big walks or runs very gradually over time so as not to accidentally hurt them. Did you turn up here hoping to learn about red fox Labs, only to find us referring to them as fox red instead? There are no consistencies in the way fox red Lab is spelled. Whether fox red is one word or two. Or whether the fox or the red comes first. Of course, we know fox red is much more special than that. At least it means you can spell it any way you like! I tend to say fox red Labrador, you can say redfox or red fox Labrador if it makes you happy. Ultimately they are all just gorgeous Labradors, with a darker shade to their yellow coat. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances. Before you get ready to hit the stores with your dog, determine if your dog is a good candidate for shopping right now. He might need additional training and socialization—or might be more of a hiking buddy than a shopping buddy. Ask yourself: Is my dog OK with new situations? Will your dog be comfortable going to new locations and seeing new people and possibly other dogs without pulling at the leash or barking? While one store location might welcome you and your dog, another location of the same retail chain might have a strict no-dogs policy. Give your local store a call first and just ask: Is your store location dog-friendly? Never, ever lie about your dog being a service dog. Please, please, please remember to only go to stores that welcome PET dogs. Never lie about your dog being a highly-trained service dog. A trained service dog that is required to assist you is allowed in any store under the Americans with Disabilities Act ADA ; this does NOT include emotional support dogs. Potty first. Make sure your dog is walked and has had the chance to potty before entering a store. Pack a short leash. Stores are not the place for an extendable leash or even an long, fixed leash. I use a four-foot-long leash whenever entering a store with a dog, and often hold this leash even shorter. Start slowly. Start with the easiest stores—pet supply stores. From there, work your way up to garden centers, smaller hardware stores and feed stores, then finally boutiques and large often noisy home centers. Visit at a quiet time. No barking. Your dog needs to be able to politely walk the aisles at your side without barking at other shoppers, merchandise, or another dog in the store. Give other shoppers plenty of room. Move out of the way of other shoppers and carts, keeping your dog at your side on a short leash. Remember that everyone may not love your dog. The goal is for your dog to quietly accompany you, stopping when you stop, not trying to greet other people. Clean up any accidents. To prevent potty accidents in the store, remember our suggestion above and walk your dog before entering—and keep a close eye, especially on male dogs, around columns or other features that previous four-legged shoppers could have potentially marked in the past. If your dog has a potty accident, clean it up immediately. Is your dog getting stressed? Give these stores, each of which has dog-friendly locations, a call to see if your local store welcomes four-legged shoppers! Typically companies do not make a company-wide policy about dog shoppers but, instead, leave it up to local store managers. Introduction Australia has an owned dog and cat population of approximately 4. In addition, the ownership of an animal may be transferred through sale or other trade, and animals in a shelter or pound can be rehomed. This results in a complex network of animals transferred between the owned and un-owned populations, and between different owners. Animals leave the care of their owners through being lost, surrenders to a shelter or pound, being abandoned, being given away or being sold. Worldwide, there have been attempts to measure the un-owned population of dogs and cats in shelters [ 2 , 3 ], but there is a lack of research into the dogs and cats that are transferred between owners and between owned and un-owned populations in other ways. Much of what we know about the flow of animals from the owned and un-owned populations comes from rescue shelters and pounds. Larger rescue organizations collect data on numbers of surrendered dogs and cats each year. In contrast, there were 45, dogs admitted to RSPCA shelters in the same year and numbers are declining [ 4 ]. There is no data available estimating the total numbers of stray and surrendered cats in Australia, although it is likely to be even higher. The incidence of unowned dogs and cats is a worldwide problem, with an estimated , dogs and , cats entering UK shelters in [ 3 ], and a study from South Korea reporting over 10, abandoned dogs in Seoul [ 5 ]. In the US, it was estimated that 4. The relinquishment of pets represents a significant cost to society in a number of ways. While local government costs include dog registrations and dealing with dog attacks, a large portion of these figures would be expected to arise from stray and relinquished animals. As well as the economic costs there are also emotional costs as people may be forced to relinquish their pets due to external influences, such as a relationship breakdown or inability to find rental accommodation that will allow a pet [ 10 , 11 ]. There are also emotional costs experienced by staff involved in euthanizing large numbers of pets at shelters, with shelter workers struggling with the moral dilemma of their job, often resulting in mental health problems and high staff turnover [ 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Finally, un-owned dogs and cats are at an increased risk of impaired welfare using both physical and psychological measures of welfare [ 15 , 16 ], as well as the emergence of diseases, demonstrated by an outbreak of virulent systemic feline calicivirus in cats [ 17 ], and of Streptococcus equi pneumonia in dogs [ 18 ]. If we are to design evidence-based strategies to reduce the numbers of dogs and cats relinquished, as well as protect the welfare of pets in which relinquishment cannot be avoided, we need to know more about the population of dogs and cats involved. Some shelters survey owners who are relinquishing pets to determine their reasons for relinquishment [ 19 , 20 ], and also collect demographic data on the age, sex and breed of the relinquished animal [ 4 , 19 , 20 ]. While this information is not perfect for example, owners may not be truthful about the behavior of their pet if they think it will negatively impact the likelihood of that pet finding a new home , it has been helpful in designing interventions. For instance, knowing that sometimes pets are relinquished because owners cannot find rental accommodation that allows pets has resulted in real changes, with the Australian state of Victoria recently announcing modifications to rental agreements to make it easier for people to rent with pets [ 21 ]. Pets are given away or sold through advertisements in newspapers, bulletin boards and using the internet. In Australia, Gumtree [ 22 ] has the highest volume of online ads for dogs and cats, followed by Trading Post [ 23 ]. Breeders of purebred dogs also advertise on DogzOnline [ 24 ], although this site represents a smaller number of animals compared to Gumtree and Trading Post. These online sites advertise both puppies and kittens being sold by a breeder, and animals being relinquished. There has been limited research into online trading of dogs and cats. To our knowledge, no published studies have focused on pets being relinquished online. Materials and Methods 2. Extraction of Data Data from Gumtree were collected over approximately three weeks for both dogs and cats: 8, 17 and 25 February for dogs and 9, 19 and 26 February for cats. Data were extracted using the BeautifulSoup module in Python Version 3. There were 50 random ads used for both dogs 1. Data on neuter, microchip and vaccination status were not collected as a minority of ads reported on these factors. Many ads request a sum of money for the pet, even when it appears the pet is being relinquished. It is possible that some very small shelters were advertising as an owner rather than as a shelter, but there was no way to differentiate these types of sellers. Both owner and breeder categories were included as there were some breeders who were relinquishing pets using the above criteria e. My intentions were to bread sic them but things have changed. The same criteria were used to determine a cat being relinquished. In some ads there was more than one animal advertised. In those cases, data was collected only from the first animal mentioned in the ad e. Surveys of Owners Who Had Relinquished Dogs or Cats An email was sent through Gumtree informing people about the study that we were conducting and asking if they would be willing to participate. Ads were chosen from those available online using the criteria for identifying a relinquished dog, outlined above. These were selected starting from the first ads shown on each day. Due to the high numbers, not all ads for relinquished dogs or cats were included on each day. A total of emails were sent to dog owners between 11 May and 14 June and emails to cat owners between 17 May and 14 June .The owners responded to the email either by return email or by phone. Surveys were performed either on the phone or in written form via email, depending on the preference of the respondent. Participants were also given an open-ended question at the end of the survey to add any other details they wished to share. Statistical Tests Comparisons between groups where the data was not normally distributed were made using Mann-Whitney tests. Categorical data was compared used Chi-square tests. Results 3. Dogs on Gumtree A total of individual ads were identified for dogs being relinquished on Gumtree between 7 and 24 February .There were ads on 7 February, ads on 16 February and ads on 24 February.
