That national was judged by the three iconic women Michele Billings, Anne Clark and Jane Forsyth, which resulted in some amazing moments not soon forgotten. With some very big shoes to fill, and without looking backward, this hardworking, creative Golden Retriever club once again hit it out of the park and hosted an amazing event. Some of the friendliest fairgrounds people I have ever experienced. The entry this year was truly significant, with regular conformation, sweepstakes, and obedience, rally and agility entries. When you add all hunt tests, held at another location, the numbers get staggering. In my 47 years of Goldens, they were as good a group as any, and many in there will become well-known names. Then the unenviable job of picking a winner out of a group of cookie-cutter type. How did he do that? Higgans and her handler Ryan Tepara. Ryan has become a very talented Golden handler, and she looked so together for her young age, not easy with a Golden. It was electric to watch the competition between these two; you could point at either and not be wrong. Later, in a large group of 18 Brood Bitches, Mr. What an amazing accomplishment. On Thursday evening, one of the main events of a Golden national, the Top Twenty, was held. This phenomenal task was placed in the ageless and very capable hands of Mr. Carl Liepmann. Liepmann acquired his first Golden in , and has stayed active in breeding and purchasing Goldens ever since. I had the honor of finishing a Golden for Carl a long time ago and learned then that all of his Goldens needed to do equally as well in the field as the show ring, as he hunted with all of them. This year the lone bagpiper played the entire time while each Golden ran around the ring as the specials were checked in one by one. Best of Opposite Sex. Now it was time for Mr. Liepmann to get started with his 76 bitches. As is usual for him, he wasted no time getting them sorted into groups of 20 and usually reducing those to 10 to then come back for another cut. Each Golden was thoroughly examined, each one given equal opportunity to shine. Eventually choosing around 35 to join the males the following day, Mr. Even with the larger numbers, the quality was so deep that it was not easy to reduce some groups to 10 as that process continued, but eventually the final male group of around 30 emerged to compete against the females and non-regulars. Liepmann was a master of his ring, moving the dogs around to all areas of the large ring to allow the entire audience to get close looks at the final groups. After much consideration the final cut was reached, and now came the unenviable task of picking the winners. You could tell the struggle was real as each dog remaining was deserving of winning the National on his or her merits. What a group of Golden Retrievers. Well, the time came, and Mr. Liepmann picked his winners. Riese was brought out of retirement at 10 years old to show in the regular breed class, was in spectacular condition and never quit. We moved during COVID to a home with 20 acres, and the first thing we started to do was fence it all in and build a technical pond for our dogs. We also have a pool for them. Every week they reach different milestones in their development and we do different things like early neurological stimulation. Marissa Hendrix: Golden Retrievers have a history and purpose founded on being a hunting dog. Preserving these characteristics and having events to be able to test and challenge these talents in our Golden Retrievers is paramount. Marissa Hendrix: The biggest public misconception in general right now is that breeding ANY other breed to a Poodle other than a Poodle is an okay idea. If I could share a comment or two with judges of my breed, what would I like to say to them? Marissa Hendrix: Make sure to select for temperament as well when evaluating the whole dog. The best judges will always be those who are welcoming to newcomers, patient with young puppies, and supportive of Juniors. Do I have any words of wisdom to pass along to newer breeders? Take time to sit ringside with your mentors and watch the judging at shows to learn. Train with and throw birds for experienced handlers in the field, and also, plop your chair in the gallery at field events—and watch. Blankets, pillows, and towels. The mother GSD and her litter need a quiet place to stay. It should be spacious, clean, and comfortable. If money is not an issue, you may purchase a commercial whelping box and a washable vet bed. But if you want to be thrifty, you can just make use of a clean cardboard box. Just make sure that the box is big enough for your GSD to stretch out comfortably. You may also buy a heat pad. It will provide warmth to the litter. Instead, put the heat pad under the whelping box, with one end on top of the box. Cover it with a towel to avoid overheating. The whelping box should be close enough to an electrical outlet so you can easily plug in the heat pad once you need more warmth for your Litter. Make sure they stay warm by providing a heating pad and lamp. You may add blankets, pillows, towels, or even old newspapers and a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel. Be careful though because puppies might get entangled and suffocate if the blanket, pillows, and towels are not taut. Puppy milk replacer, baby bottle, or feeding syringe If the litter is abandoned or orphaned, ask your vet to prescribe milk formulated for German shepherd puppies. Purchase a baby bottle or syringe for feeding. If you leave newborn German shepherd puppies with their mother, give her the first two days to bond with her litter and feed them. Once you see that your GSD has accepted her litter and is feeding them, you can put the puppies in a box beside their mother. She will take care of cleaning and nurturing her pups while continuing to feed them with her milk. But if she still refuses to take care of her pups, you must take matters into your own hands. To do this, place a clean towel or a washable vet bed inside a cardboard box. Keep the box beside your GSD but make sure that she cannot get in touch with her pups. Plug the pad into an electrical outlet and adjust the heat to maintain its temperature at 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The pups can get hypothermia if their body heat drops below 94 degrees Fahrenheit. These exercises kick the neurological system in to gear at an earlier than normal age. The early stimulation results in a dog with superior abilities to perform compared to their counterparts that did not under go the Bio-Sensor excercises. We are doing all that we can to give these pups the brightest future. Perfect size for a first litter. The first two boys were the largest at 20 oz. Gjeter is an excellent mom, tending to every need. All the pups are healthy, strong and vigorous. Mom knew exactly what to do as each pup was whelped. We assisted her with the first pup by opening the sac right away. We were a little anxious since she was in stage 2 labor for 12 hours. Talk about an event that will weigh on your nerves! Gjeter is doing very well. She is surprisingly lean again. It's nice to see that all the extra food went to the pups. Glenn made a great design and this one is built to last. It should be easy to clean with the white walls and removable rails. Gjeter is nesting in it here and there, but she still prefers to sleep in her crate. She is getting quite tired now. She enjoys getting extra z's throughout the day. She is still enjoying her daily walks though. It's been a bit of a balancing act when it comes to food. She's the type of dog that will make you think she is starving even when she is stuffed. Signs of pups on the way should be any day now. Not only can the pups be felt, but their movement can also be seen while watching her belly. They are very active which is not surprising. It is not recommended to take it from its mother and littermates because it starts its socialization and gets the first experience of biting inhibition from them. When you take your doggy home, follow the advice of your breeder and veterinarian. In addition, you need to measure and weigh your pup to be able to follow its growth. You should also think about crate training your dog from the first days of staying at your home. Start potty training as soon as possible. However, be very careful about the first walks. The immune system of a little German Shepherd is too unstable and vulnerable to many infections. It has already received all the nutrients it needed during its first month.
