Black Lab Puppies Health Considerations Though generally very healthy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 10 to 12 years — our Black Labs for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Black Lab puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. Hip and elbow dysplasia are both hereditary conditions that can cause joint pain and mobility issues. Allergies are relatively common in dogs, and Black Labs are no exception. Symptoms can include itchiness, redness, and hair loss. Exercise-induced collapse is a relatively rare condition that can be triggered by strenuous activity. Symptoms include weakness, dizziness, and collapse. While these health concerns can be daunting, many of them can be effectively managed with proper care. Finding a Black Lab puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. Black Labrador Retrievers, or just Black Labs, are a common coat color variation of one of the most popular dog breeds. The Black Labrador Retriever is not necessarily a separate dog breed. Black Labs are still Labrador Retrievers; they just have a distinct coat color that is a specifically-bred characteristic. Like other Labrador Retrievers, Black Labs are energetic, playful, and affectionate dogs that make great family companions. Although they are active and energetic dogs, Labs are also known for their gentleness and patience with other family members. Well-socialized Black Labs tend to get along well with just about everyone including children, other dogs, pets, and even strangers. They are considered one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , Black Labs thrive on attention, especially from their favorite humans. They are happiest when they are spending time with their families and receiving affection and attention from them. Despite their high energy, Labs are highly adaptable dogs. They do tend to be better suited to homes with fenced yards where they can run, but they also adapt well to apartments provided they get enough daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation. They do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat and extreme cold like many dog breeds. As such, they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Black Labrador Retriever can include elbow dysplasia , hip dysplasia, heart disease, hereditary myopathy, cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy. Another potential health concern is EIC exercise-induced collapse , which can occur in young adult Labs and has a genetic link. Because carriers can be identified by DNA tests, it is recommended that breeders test for them. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you talk to the breeder about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, Labrador Retrievers are at a higher risk for bloat. Labrador Retrievers are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. Although their high energy and puppylike exuberance can sometimes be a challenge, they are intelligent dogs that are eager to please. As long as training is kept consistent and focused on positive rewards and praise, novice owners still tend to do well with Black Labs. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training too. Black Labs have a short, water-resistant double coat that sheds year-round and sheds heavier as seasons change. Depending on how active your Black Lab is and what they get into, they may need a bath more often, especially if they are swimming a lot. Weekly ear checks and careful cleanings when needed help prevent ear infections. Good dental care for dogs , like daily brushing and cleanings at the vet when needed, can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. As one of the most active dog breeds , a Black Labrador Retriever will need a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run are a minimum. Your Black Lab will likely be up for more activity if you are. One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that they have an extended puppyhood. They tend to maintain a puppylike exuberance until they are years old. Although they do tend to mellow out as they get older, they are still active, energetic, and playful dogs. Once they are fully grown, you can try other things like hiking, running, dock diving, and more to find other activities you and your Black Lab can enjoy together. Fully-grown Black Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Black Labs generally live for years on average. Black Labrador Retrievers came before the also-popular Chocolate Lab. All modern Chocolate Labs can be traced back to three Black Labs in the s. It was the December issue of .Featured Black Labrador Retriever Article. As my website states, I am not like other breeders in many ways. First, I want to explain how the average Labrador breeder raises their pups the first few weeks of their life. They expect these tiny pups without their senses fully developed to find their way to a nipple without being smothered. I understand that this is what dogs do in the wild, but this is also why many puppies die in the wild. .Then, on top of that they hope that each of the pups will get enough milk on it's own to make it through the 1st week of life. They expect the Lab mom to do all the work, so they don't have to lose a wink of sleep. This is all very sad to say but it's true. I, on the other hand, care about each individual pup's life, I care that each and every one of them survive so that they can live a full and happy life. So, I make sure that each individual pup is given outstanding care. How do I do this? I began with hand raising each one of my pups the first 3 weeks of its life. What do I mean by hand raise my pup? It means I personally make sure each individual pup is fed every 2 hours- 24 hours a day, the first 2 weeks of its life. At feeding time, I make sure each puppy gets on a nipple so they don't have to struggle to find one. I make sure that each puppy gets an adequate amount of milk. Then, once I see that they have been well fed. I pick up one pup at a time and have the mom lick it to go potty. And then I put them in their little crib to ensure they are safe and not smooth by the mother until the next feeding 2 hours later. At three weeks, we feed the pups every 4 hours. But at this point, even though the pups eyes and ears are open. I still supervise the feeding to ensure that each pup is adequately fed and again not smothered by it's mother. I believe in giving these pups outstanding care. Even if that means that I lose a lot of sleep, and even if it ends up just saving one pups life. That one pup could be the next Labrador that I get a testimony about how it brought so much joy into one person's life! So, in the end, all the work and lack of sleep is worth it. I am up now about to give my pups their 3 am feeding. Hope this helps you all understand what is put into each litter. She is from our breeding between Cash and Bella, both parents are health certified. Sugar is overnight crate trained and has some other training. She has the sweetest disposition; we absolutely love her! However, we have had a family emergency that has come up that may cause us to have to put Sugar up for sale. If you would be interested in Sugar, please email us and let us know about yourself, and the lifestyle that you would be able to give Sugar. We will be reviewing potential families who would be interested in Sugar and pick the best family for her, and make a decision later this month. They are given constant positive attention their whole time with us. We have a big game room that we call the "Labby Room" This room is designated for our labs and their lab puppies. The puppies get a lot of interaction with all our kids in this room. They also become well adjusted to all the sounds of the home life, like the sound of a vacuum. When the pups are born, I will contact you and inform you on how many pups were born. We will post up pictures of each litter soon after they are born. And try to post weekly picture updates so you can watch the puppies grow. We will also post video on our face book page. When the pups are 6 to 7 weeks of age, I will contact you to set up an appointment for you choose and pick up your pup at 8 weeks of age. If you had first deposit in for a male pup you will have first choice of all the males available. If you have second deposit in, you will have the next appointment to choose from the males that are left and so forth. This order of reserving pups would also apply to the females as well. We honor all reservations on a puppy by not selling the puppy to anyone else. So if you are interested in a litter and don't want to make a reservation until "you see the litter". An appointment can be made to view the left-over puppies when they are 10 weeks old, and no sooner. No appointments will be allowed at a younger age, except for the families that made a prior reservation. We will not allow our baby puppies to be exposed to potential life threatening viruses from people that are just "shopping". We wait until all puppies that have been reserved are safely home, before we show any left-over puppies. Any left-over pups will be at least 10 weeks of age before any viewings are allowed, to insure they have at least had 2 sets of shots in. The only other accommodation that we can offer is a zoom call, so you can see the pups before you make a reservation. Most of our sweet puppies are sold before they are even born. A few breeders began actively crossing Bernese mountain dogs with poodles; however, it is conceivable that the first Bernedoodles were the product of accidental breeding. Purebred dogs are highly standardized in height, weight, color, coat type, temperament, and body structure. Because the Bernedoodle is a hybrid and not a purebred dog, none of the relevant purebred dog registries, like the American Kennel Club and United Kennel Club, accept it. The Bernedoodle also lacks an established breed standard; therefore, there is considerable variety in the appearance and behavior of individual Bernedoodles. Varied breeders may have different conceptions of what constitutes a Bernedoodle, making it difficult to predict what you may receive if you purchase a Bernedoodle puppy. Bernedoodles can be F1 first generation , F2 second generation , F3 third generation , and so on. The puppies produced by an F1 litter are pretty varied. Some may resemble Bernese Mountain Dogs, while others may resemble poodles. Some puppies may resemble a hybrid of the two parent breeds, while others may not resemble either parent breed. In a litter of F1 Bernedoodle puppies, the coat type and amount of shedding can vary significantly. Two F1 Bernedoodles are crossed to produce F2 Bernedoodles. Additionally, F2 Bernedoodles have varied coat types. Some breeders add more poodles to the bloodlines to increase the stability of the coat type. This is known as backcrossing and is represented by a B. Tips When Choosing a Bernedoodle Breeder When choosing a Bernedoodle breeder, it is essential to ask questions and be sure you know what to expect. Here are some tips: Ask if they have the parents and puppies available. If not, ask when they will be available. Ask how much litter they have produced in the past year or a few years. Ask about the kennels where your new addition will live- is it clean? Are there plenty of toys for them to play with? If yes, this should help ensure they have lots of fun while being socialized correctly! The price of a Bernedoodle puppy depends on the breeder, the age of the puppy, and its breed. Conclusion Bernedoodles typically get along great with children and other dogs. They are usually a very affectionate breed and will love to cuddle all day long. Image Credits:. For Stud Introduction The Bernedoodle is a hybrid breed that is full of vigour. He is a lively dog with a sweet disposition. His goofiness and great love for his human companions garnered him countless fans. Since it is relatively a new breed, he is not yet recognised by the Kennel Club. It is a designer breed, a mix of the poodle and the Bernese mountain dog. He was solely created to be a wonderful family companion. Origins of the Bernedoodle The Bernedoodle dog breed is thought to have existed for a long time. However, it was Sherry Rupke of Swissridge Kennels that was recognised as the first breeder to create this mixed breed. Back then, Sherry was separately breeding the golden Labradoodle and the Bernese mountain dog. It saddened her that the Bernese breed has such a short lifespan. So, she thought of making a new breed similar to the golden Labradoodle by using the Bernese. Thus, she cross-bred a poodle with a Bernese mountain dog. Her efforts proved to be fruitful as the first Bernedoodle pups were born in in Canada. Appearance and Grooming How big does a standard size Bernedoodle get? A fully mature standard Bernedoodle may grow approximately 23—29 inches tall. The smaller variation of the breed such as the mini Bernedoodle will have a height of 18—22 inches once he matures. Meanwhile, an adult tiny Bernedoodle will stand about 12—17 inches tall. How much does a Bernedoodle weigh? The weight of an adult standard Bernedoodle is approximately 50—90 lbs. What does a Bernedoodle look like? He has a triangular muzzle. His ears hang down along his head. He has black, oval eyes that are set far apart. His tail is bushy and carried high. He possesses thick, cushioned pads. A Bernedoodle that has a predominant Bernese gene is more likely to be taller and have a more defined, strong, equilateral physique. His coat often varies depending on which parent breed's gene prevails. One that has more Bernese blood will have a straighter coat. The one that acquired more of the poodle genes has more chances of inheriting the curly and wavy coat. His coat is dense, which gives him protection from the heat and insulation during the cold season. Is Bernedoodles hypoallergenic? The Bernedoodle's hypoallergenic coat is one of the things that are sought after by many dog owners. It is worth noting that a Bernedoodle with a curly coat sheds less, thus producing minimal dander. This dog is more fitting for allergic people. The one that possesses a straighter coat moults often, which makes him less hypoallergenic. The one with a straight coat requires at least once a week of brushing. However, since he sheds more, be prepared to brush him frequently during his moulting season. The Bernedoodle dog with curly hair needs more brushing. Brushing must be done at least three to four times a week to prevent mats and remove debris. Be sure to take him to the groomer if his coat grows too long. When it comes to bathing, only do it once he becomes too dirty or smelly. Frequent washing will dry his skin and hair and will cause skin problems. Clip his nails every three to four weeks to prevent splitting or cracking of nails. This poodle mix has droopy ears, so cleaning them often is a must to prevent ear infections. Gum diseases are common in dogs, so incorporate a daily dental routine in his daily grooming. Temperament and Intelligence The Bernedoodle is primarily bred to be a great family dog. He is expected to be extremely friendly and fond of his human companions. He is a Velcro dog that wants to stick close to his loved ones. He makes a good companion dog. Because of his loyalty to his owners, he can be protective of them and be indifferent around strangers. His love for his family has a downside. If left alone for too long, the Bernedoodle may have separation anxiety. It can cause him to develop unwanted behaviours such as incessant barking, digging, and ruining furniture. Therefore, make sure that he has a companion with him throughout the day when the rest of the family is out. The Bernedoodle is great for families with children and other pets. He is a lively dog that thoroughly enjoys fun and games. However, supervision is still recommended as he could be aloof at times and might cause an accident. Adults need to teach younger children how to gently handle dogs, too, to prevent them from hurting the dogs. Early socialisation paired with proper training is crucial. This will greatly help the Bernedoodle to mature into an amiable and sociable dog. Lack of socialisation may lead him to become vicious or timid around people and other animals. When it comes to training, the Bernedoodle is quick-witted and very eager to please his owner. However, he has a slight stubbornness in him, so be patient. Training should be firm and consistent, but also gentle. Rough training will only lead him to defy you. Instead, use positive reinforcement training, such as praising and giving him treats to encourage him even more. Fun Facts The Bernedoodle commonly has an affinity for snow and water. He inherited this trait from his parent breeds. The Bernese mountain dog enjoys the snow, although he may tend to dislike water. Meanwhile, the poodle is known to love swimming. There are various types of Bernedoodle generations. F1 is a first-generation Bernedoodle that is 50 per cent poodle and 50 per cent Bernese mountain dog. An F1b Bernedoodle is 75 per cent poodle and 25 per cent Bernese. An F2 Bernedoodle is a cross-breed between two different F1 Bernedoodles. Breeders do not recommend this as the offspring is likely to have genetic health problems. An F2 Bernedoodle is .The breed is often picked to become a therapy dog because of his friendly nature. He loves to interact with people and be with them. Nutrition and Feeding Protect your Bernedoodle pup from malnutrition and serious health issues by supplying him with a high-quality diet that is rich in protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Since the Bernedoodle is an active and high-energy breed, he will benefit more from protein-rich food. The best dog food will have meat as the primary ingredient. Some protein sources may include fish, chicken, or beef. Make it a habit to divide his meals into two servings. This is to prevent him from gorging on his food. Quickly devouring food can lead to a bloated stomach and weight gain. Health and Exercise An energetic dog that likes to have fun, the Bernedoodle needs at least thirty minutes to an hour of workout. Walking around the neighbourhood, playing fetch, or learning new tricks are fun ways to expend his energy. Since the breed is known to love water, consider taking him to the beach or the lake for a swim. The Bernedoodle is a healthier breed compared to the poodle and the Bernese mountain dog. In fact, he has a lifespan of twelve to eighteen years. Smaller variations of the breed tend to live longer than their larger counterparts. However, there are still a few health issues that you need to look out for, such as: Eye problems such as canine cataracts Hyperadrenocorticism Cost of Ownership What impacts the cost of Bernedoodles? Many factors can affect the price tag. These include: Number of Quality Breeders The breed is fairly new, so there are only a few reputable Bernedoodle breeders. This can hike up the cost of the puppy. New Breed The Bernedoodle breed is in demand, but because the breed is new, puppies come in low quantities. The low supply and high demand can make the puppy costly. Tricoloured ones are found to be the most expensive. Health Tests Responsible breeders always make sure to produce a healthy litter. There may pay expensive fees for health screenings. How much does it cost to raise a Bernedoodle? Bernedoodle Breed Highlights The Bernedoodle enjoys being close to his family and engages in goofy antics that will bring out smiles and laughter. He is good around children and other pets with the help of early socialisation. He responds well to firm and consistent training and positive reinforcement. He needs a minimal amount of exercise throughout the day. Are you sure the Bernedoodle is the best breed for you? Take the Pet Breed Selector Quiz to find your perfect breed match. Dog Breed Selector Quiz Disclaimer: The information, including measurements, prices and other estimates, on this page is provided for general reference purposes only. However, the Bernedoodle was first intentionally bred by Sherry Rupke of Swissridge Kennels in , as she wanted to combine the Poodles clever and goofy personality with the unfaltering loyalty of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Where the Bernedoodle is a relatively new breed, the two breeds involved in its make-up go way back. The origins of the Bernese Mountain Dog can be traced back 2, years when the Romans invaded Switzerland with their cattle drovers and guard dogs. As with all crossbreeds, you must be ready for any combination of the parent breeds physical and behavioural traits. The Poodle is an active working dog who needs plenty of exercise, thrives on having a job to do, and loves training and exercising their busy brains. The Bernese Mountain Dog is far calmer and laid-back and is often happy lying around watching what is going on. So, you could end up with a light-ish build dog who needs a lot of exercise and training, or you could end up with a heavier dog whose body and brain is more that of a friendly couch potato! Even an active Bernedoodle may not mature for quite some time, so short periods of exercise several times a day are far better so as not to permanently damage growing bones and joints. With this in mind, exercising first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening when the sun is cooler may be necessary. Take advice from both your breeder and your vet.
Sometimes, supplements can do more harm than good. When should I start giving my German Shepherd puppy supplements? Most supplements can be given to your German Shepherd puppy as early as 12 weeks of age. The exception is calcium supplements, which you should never give to a puppy under 1 year old. Too much calcium can cause bones to develop too quickly, causing long term pain and joint damage. However, since German Shepherds are predisposed to developing joint issues, joint supplements are advised to be started as early as 3 months old. Keep in mind that giving supplements to your puppy could mask underlying health conditions, such as stomach problems, and make the issues hard to detect and treat. Does my German Shepherd puppy need a multivitamin? Yes, German Shepherd puppies 3 months and older need supplements, especially those for their hips, joints, stomach soothers, and improving their itchy skin and dry coats. Usually, dogs should get all the vitamins they need from a balanced diet. But in some cases, modern dog food manufacturing processes kill off essential nutrients. Multivitamin supplements, probiotics, digestive enzymes, and omega-3 oils are generally safe for puppies 12 weeks of age and older. And almost all German Shepherd puppies should be given joint supporting supplements due to their predisposition for joint-related issues. This means that you must perform your own due diligence to make sure you select safe supplements. Each supplement has its own benefits and drawbacks, which you must also take into account. Too much is a bad thing When giving multiple supplements, beware of overdosing to avoid giving too much of a good thing. In fact, more than necessary could cause unwanted side effects. Watch out for imbalances The majority of German Shepherds react well to supplements. But when giving vitamins or minerals to puppies, extra caution should be taken. This is because these supplements can lead to a nutritional imbalance that can be harmful to growing puppies. Always talk to your vet Your vet is the best resource for advice on giving supplements to your German Shepherd. Too much calcium can cause excessive bone growth which damages their joints. This fast growth can also lead to long term pain, hip issues, and other growth disorders. Supplements made for humans contain higher doses of vitamins than your dog needs. You could accidentally give them serious complications by using human supplements. With high amounts of iron and calcium, prenatal vitamins could cause iron toxicity in puppies. This can lead to serious side effects. Other vitamins, such as vitamin D, can cause organ damage in dogs. An overdose of Vitamin D can cause kidney failure. Keep your German Shepherd puppy away from caffeine! It has antibacterial properties and is therefore also found in dental hygiene products, such as mouthwash or toothpaste. The amount of xylitol found in different products varies. But shockingly, even pieces of gum may be enough to cause toxic effects in a dog source! Always keep human food and hygiene products away from your puppy. You never know what ingredient might actually cause serious problems or even fatalities in your pup. Certain supplements can give your pup a healthier lifestyle, like:. Most dogs get their essential nutrients from food, but in some cases they may need a little calcium boost. Dogs and humans! A healthy dog fed commercial dog food will get the recommended amount of calcium in their diet. However, there are some health issues that can cause your pooch to need more calcium. Even so, it's always a good idea to consult with your veterinarian before introducing a new supplement into your pup's diet. As such, the specific amount taken in will vary depending on your dog's daily calorie requirement. This is why it is always so important to feed a diet targeted at the correct life stage of your dog," Simon says. Pregnant and nursing dogs do require more calcium in order to help promote bone growth in the pups. If a dog takes in too little calcium when she is pregnant, it can lead to eclampsia which is a life threatening condition when the nursing dog's blood calcium levels drop. Eclampsia also dubbed milk fever most commonly occurs when the pups are between one to four weeks old, the time when the mom is producing the greatest amount of milk. Smaller breeds and dogs nursing many offspring may be at a higher risk for hypocalcemia compared to larger breeds with smaller litters.

We had two Saint Bernards which spent a lot of time at Amigo for one reason or another. They got to know all of the vets, vet techs, and front desk staff. Everyone there is always great to work with and they always took the time to answer all of our questions and make us feel heard. Garret became our dogs primary vet and he was always great with them and us. Even during the incredibly hard times in which we had to make the difficult choice that it was time to put our dog down, everyone at Amigo was incredibly supportive. Both of our dogs loved the vet and it always felt like Amigo loved Burley and Nana equally as much. Ross B. Entire staff us knowledgeable and genuinely interested in all animals. Always make room for urgent cases and cost is responsible! George F. The staff is very friendly, and it's clear they really love what they do. I was pretty much their last patient on Saturday and there was no sense of urgency to rush me through. They really took their time. If I could leave a six-star review I would. I am contemplating changing my primary vet to them after this really positive experience. Even though the prices might be a little high you're getting good quality service and can be rest assured that your baby or babies are in good hands. Cynthia B. Dominic Carrica, my dear Darla's favorite doctor, for attending to her with competence from her smallest to her biggest health issues. Visits to the clinic have soared the past year as Darla enters her sunset years. Blessings to you all! Elaine K. They care for our animals and do an excellent job! Kimberly S. Great facilities caring doctors and techs. Crystal N. Like other places will be back Thomas W. They are very professional and courteous. When we could no longer drive, Dr. Carrica started coming to the house. Great veterinarian! Dralus D. Haven't had a bad experience yet. They take good care of my dog and keep him healthy. Thank you Amigo Brice C. I feel like the staff really cares about their clients and gets to know the animals well. We purchase the senior health plans and feel like they are a good deal, especially since we visit the vet often and get annual dentals done. I also love how I can orders my dog's meds via their online pharmacy--it is super easy and convenient. We recently had to make the difficult decision to euthanize our elderly dog due to health issues, and Amigo staff came and did it in the most caring and compassionate way possible. I highly recommend their services! Megan R. They have always been upfront about pricing and, very matter of fact about the condition of the cats health. They take care credit which has been so helpful for the more costly emergencies. We also have an unfriendly cat to anyone outside of our family who they sedate to work on but they handle him really well. The staff has been friendly and talkative every time I've encountered them. I had to bring my three dogs in and they were amazing and taking time for each one and discussing what the best options were. Jessica H. Very compassionate. Took the time to answer all my questions. Leslie F. Very friendly staff. .Explained everything thoroughly to me and answered any questions I had. Michelle A. Mack M. We have used Amigo for many years and have always been very satisfied. Deryl E. Expensive but at least the docs are knowledgeable. Dylan W. Peace of mind knowing a quality staff and competent doctors are caring for my pet. Nat B. Amigo genuinely cares for pets and pet parents! Mellisa S. Got my dog in fast and was very thorough. Wish I was staying in the area. This would be the vet I would always go to Cherie L. The staff were friendly, it was cheaper than I thought for anesthesia and the minor procedure. Ethan M. We would not have them cared for anywhere else! We have always had amazing experiences with all staff and doctors at Amigo. The doctors are thorough and take time to explain what is going on with our dogs and treat our dogs like we do! Nancy K. They've all been incredibly helpful though all the shots, a raisin emergency, and dental and neutering appts. Everyone is so kind and makes us feel welcome! Alexzis A. We have taken all our dogs and cats here for a long time.Highly recommend Amigo Veterinarian services. Thank you Amigo! Jayne D. It lacks the physical deformities bred into western show lines of German Shepherds and has become one of Russia's most popular dog types. It was developed in the s and s to correct behavioural and conformational issues that have been bred into modern German Shepherds, and was bred for its large size, length of back, temperament and soundness of hips. White-coated German Shepherds were once banned from registration in their native Germany, but in the United States and Canada the coloration gained a following and a breed club was formed specifically for white German Shepherds, calling their variety the White Shepherd. The variety is recognised as a separate breed by the United Kennel Club. It descends from the American White Shepherds; the first stud dog of what was to become the breed was an American dog born in and imported to Switzerland. They are especially well known for their police work, being used for tracking criminals, patrolling troubled areas and detection and holding of suspects. Additionally, thousands of German Shepherds have been used by the military. These military working dogs MWD are usually trained for scout duty, and they are used to warn soldiers to the presence of enemies or of booby traps or other hazards. They were used in World War II as messenger dogs, rescue dogs and personal guard dogs. These include search and rescue, cadaver searching , narcotics detection, explosives detection , accelerant detection and mine detection dog, among others. They are suited for these lines of work because of their keen sense of smell and their ability to work regardless of distractions. When formal guide dog training began in Switzerland in the s under the leadership of Dorothy Eustis , all of the dogs trained were German Shepherd females. These results suggested that Labrador Retrievers were more suited to guide dog work while German Shepherds were more suited to police work. They are expected to patrol the boundaries to keep sheep from trespassing and damaging the crops. In Germany and other places these skills are tested in utility dog trials also known as Herdengebrauchshund HGH herding utility dog trials. He is regarded to be the dog who has captured the most drugs in Mexican police and military history. You may improve this section , discuss the issue on the talk page , or create a new section, as appropriate. By this number had grown to over .Returning soldiers spoke highly of the breed and animal actors Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart popularised the breed further. Her offspring had defects as the result of poor breeding, which caused the breed to decline in popularity during the late s. As of [update] , the German Shepherd is the second most popular breed in the US. Degenerative myelopathy , a neurological disease, occurs with enough regularity specifically in the breed to suggest that the breed is predisposed to it. A very inexpensive DNA saliva test is now available to screen for degenerative myelopathy. The test screens for the mutated gene that has been seen in dogs with degenerative myelopathy. The test is only recommended for predisposed breeds, but can be performed on DNA samples from any dog, collected through swabbing the inside of the animal's cheek with a sterile cotton swab. Prospective German Shepherd buyers can now request the test from the breeder or buy from a breeder who is known to test their dogs. Skeletal health and supplementation[ edit ] Musculoskeletal disorders are debilitating conditions that are often associated with genetic makeup, malnutrition, and stress-related events. Canine hip dysplasia CHD is an orthopaedic condition resulting from abnormal development of the hip joint and surrounding tissue causing the instability and partial dislocation of the hip joint, resulting in pain, inflammation , lameness, and potentially osteoarthritis of the joint. Both have stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A German Shepherd named Inspector Rex is the star of an Austrian Police procedural drama program of the same name, which won many awards, where German Shepherd Rex assists the Vienna Kriminalpolizei homicide unit. It became one of the staple productions of Hungarian television history, making German Shepherds the most popular dog breed in the country ever since. Wearing a collar? If yes, please describe No Other Information At approximately pm, I was driving my personal vehicle near the intersection of 4th Street and Pitkin. I observed a red colored sedan parked in the middle of the intersection, located in the far right lane with their emergency lights on. I merged into the middle lane and observed a white dog walking in the middle of the intersection. I stopped my vehicle and put my emergency lights on and got out of my vehicle and retrieved the dog and placed the dog in my passenger seat. I notified the person in the red vehicle that I would attempt to get ahold of Animal Services. I contacted a dispatcher and was connected with an Animal Services dispatcher. Animal Services notified me that my options were waiting for Animal Services to open at am or take the dog to an outdoor dog kennel. I notified Animal Services that I would transport the dog to Roice-Hurst Humane Society, in which I obtained a pad lock combination for the outdoor dog kennel area. The dog was placed in the outdoor dog kennel area and I verified the dog had water and adequate warmth and shelter. Contact Name.
Long or medium, water resistant Coat Colors Bi-colored, range from black, cream, sable, black, and amber. Above all, know that these dogs are by no means small! In fact, they can grow to be quite large. This mix will grow to be somewhere in between how big its parents are. Male and female German Shepherds have a better big difference in height and weight. While males grow up to 24 and 26 inches cm , females get to be about 22 and 24 inches cm. As far as weight, males can be 65 to 90 pounds kg heavy while females are only between 50 to 70 pounds kg. The Golden Retriever looks a bit different. Again, there is a difference between the sexes. Females can grow as tall as .Males are inches 58 — 61 cm tall and pounds 29 — 34 kg heavy. But what does this mean for your Golden Shepherd? As mentioned above these dogs grow to 20 to 26 inches cm tall and 60 to 85 pounds 27 — 39 kg heavy. It really is just a guessing game with this breed. Hands down, they the best out of the best when it comes to guarding. Golden Retrievers are on the opposite end of the spectrum. They are very easy going, love all strangers, and are loyal to any family members. These dogs are social and beloved because of their awesome people pleasing skills. The Golden Retriever German Shepherd Mix could inherit any combination of these behaviors from their parents, just as the same as their appearance. Their cleverness makes training easy. Kids and Golden Shepherds get along great. Your dog will always be up for some fetch or tug-of-war. Since there is hunting blood in their veins, watch them around smaller animals. Or you might witness lots of chasing. Be on the Lookout for These Possible Health Problems source As mentioned in the first paragraph Golden Shepherds have a life expectancy of around years if they receive enough love and high-quality care. However, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers have numerous health issues that can pass down to their puppies. Work closely with your breeder to prevent this from happening to you. German Shepherd Health Risks These dogs have been bred for multiple centuries. Because of this, they run into many medical problems. However, here are the top three problems that you might run into. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia This is a pretty common disease for most, but unfortunately, the German Shepherd is more prone to it than others. In fact, 1 out of 5 German Shepherds are expected to have this. This could be blamed on their energetic personality and big stature. Regardless, hip and elbow dysplasia is when the hip or elbow joint frequently pops out of its socket. As you can expect, this can cause the bones to wear down over time and, eventually, cause lameness. Perianal Fistula In other words, doggy diarrhea. It can be particularly alarming as it is often accompanied with bloody poop. It all starts when the skin around the anus begins to gets infected. Osteoarthritis Or, when the joints begin to wear down after normal living. Most specifically for German Shepherds, it happens around the spine. If you take good care of your German Shepherd, as well as schedule regular vet visits to be proactive in their health, you can expect 11 happy years together. The most alarming of these is cancer. Aside from this, you can expect .Here are several of their other health problems: Atopic Dermatitis : Otherwise known as allergies! Most commonly, dogs can be allergic to pollen, animal dander, plants, insects, food, and medication. This breed is known to have lots of issues with this. Aortic Stenosis : This is a medical condition that affects the blood flow in the chambers of the heart. Eventually, this can thicken the heart walls and lead to serious heart issues and even failure. Just like with German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers are also prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. Many do debates whether this is true. The unfortunate side of this is that examples have shown us over time they may change into something not as healthy. A great example of this is the English Bulldog. Yet, on the other hand, mixing combines the positive traits of two types while getting rid of the negative. It takes a lot of time and hard effort, but it can happen. Regardless of this debate, whether your pup is healthy comes down to the breeder you choose and the parents. But what should you specifically work on? Make sure to socialize your Golden Shepherd early in case they adopt the nervousness around strangers from their German Shepherds parents. Have visitors, other animals, and children over often. The more experience they have around strangers, the better. Plan for many daily walks. Because of this, a house with a yard is better. But an apartment can work if given enough daily exercise. Since German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are prone to having joint problems and your pup could inherit these issues, be cautious when exercising. As well, overeating can be a problem because extra weight increases the load on the joints. Make sure to use a brush that can reach both layers of the coat. Heading to the bathtub too often can damage their skin. As well, pay attention to how long their nails have grown and clip when necessary. Brush their teeth weekly to avoid the buildup of plaque and stinky kisses. And check their ears weekly for too much wax. This depends on where you buy from and the pedigree. The good news is that there are breeders everywhere! Also across Canada and the UK. As we mentioned before, do your research! Make sure anyone you purchase from is raising healthy and happy pups. Do a quick search in your area on sites like:. TOP "We love Luna and she's been great!!! She has definitely gotten comfortable and driving our other dogs crazy, LOL! We adore her! She has the greatest temperament!!! She's perfect! We cannot thank you enough! Just wanted to send a few pictures of Macky! He's growing like a weed! We joke that all he knows how to do is eat and snuggle. Obsessed with him! He is an exceptional puppy with a sweetness and sensibility that everyone comments on who meets him. We couldn't be happier with this sweet boy. He was the missing piece to our home. We are considering getting another puppy from you. Whatever you are doing, as breeders, is 'kosher' as far as we are concerned, and I trust you and your opinions. Again, I cannot say thank you enough for our wonderful Royal, and all the work you did in his first weeks, to encourage him to be the best he could be. I want to thank your children for their input also. He practically gets hypnotized when we roll him onto his back and rub him all over his belly, paws, and tail, and he absolutely loves when little kids come over to play. You can tell he had a very good experience with your kids, and passes that love on to other kids. Thanks again, Katie! A huge lover and snuggler. We can't get enough of how sweet she is! She is doing so well! She just graduated from the beginner's obedience training this past week! The Golden Shepherd tends to be a friendly, energetic, and affectionate dog that is loyal to their family and tends to be protective of them. Although they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Breed Registry, and more. A Golden Shepherd tends to bring the all-around friendly personality of the Golden Retriever and the intelligence and devotion of the German Shepherd into one dog. They love their families and tend to get along with everyone including children. These dogs are not necessarily suspicious of strangers, but they are alert and will tend to bark if they see something they feel you need to know about. Golden Shepherds are moderately adaptable dogs. Because they are high-energy, they tend to do better in homes with yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living as long as plenty of time is dedicated to giving them the daily exercise they need. They tend to do well in most climates. But, as with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. Because Golden Shepherds are devoted to their families and thrive on spending time with them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A mixed-breed dog can inherit the potential health issues common to one, both, or neither of their parent breeds. As a larger, barrel-chested dog breed, the Golden Shepherd, like their parent breeds, is also at a higher risk for bloat. The Golden Shepherd is a highly trainable dog breed. They are intelligent, eager to please, and pick up on things quickly. This makes them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Puppy training classes can still be a great idea because they offer opportunities to socialize a puppy while also strengthening your bond with them. The Golden Shepherd will have a thick double-coat that sheds moderately year-round and more heavily twice a year as seasons change. A quick daily brushing, especially during seasonal shedding sessions, will help remove loose fur to make your dog more comfortable and also help keep more fur contained to a brush instead of everywhere else. Bathing is on an occasional, as-needed basis. Monthly nail trims are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long or causing issues. Plus, if anything is starting to happen, you can get the vet before it gets more serious. Because many dog owners overlook this, gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is ideal. The Golden Shepherd comes from two high-energy dogs, so they require a lot of daily exercise to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime and time to run are the minimum. But, a Golden Shepherd will likely be up for more activity if you are. A trip to the dog park for some off-leash time, playing frisbee or chasing a ball, hiking, swimming, running, and more can all help this dog expend some extra energy. You want to keep their activity low-impact as they are still growing, but once they finish growing, try different activities to see what you both love doing together. You could even try training them for dog sports! A fully-grown Golden Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. A Golden Shepherd generally lives for years. Daisy and Brock are a beautiful mother and son pair who love to snuggle together and cuddle. They are both sweet, happy, and friendly. They adore getting attention from anyone they meet during their walks and easily draw people in with their sunny personalities and soft silky coats. They have settled into an easy routine in their foster home and relish their walks every day and visits to the dog park. During their walks Brock clocks roughly twice the mileage of foster mom and Daisy with his side-to-side walking style. Neither is true! These pups love to live it up at the dog park where they show off their speed as Brock sprints and dives after his Kong frisbee, often grabbing it taco style, while Daisy relishes fetching an orange Chuck-It ball before eventually resting to chew on it. Brock is also a master at tug-of-war who has learned to drop it sometimes after repeated requests so it can be thrown again. Brock is extra special because he was born without a tail, which causes him to be incontinent. Inside the house he wears diapers and a belly band, and his incontinence is easily managed. When coming inside from a walk, Brock waits patiently for his diaper to be put on. Daisy and Brock took time to smell the roses and ponder life. While happy to be in a foster home, they would love to find their forever home. Please open your mind and your heart to considering adopting these two gorgeous pups. You will never regret your decision. Adopting a Rescued Lab Complete our online adoption application below. DLRR currently serves throughout the state of Arizona. We may have limited resources in rural parts of Arizona, so contact us to see if we serve your area. We do not adopt dogs to people outside Arizona. DLRR does its best to match the right dog with the right family by finding out as much as possible about the potential adoptive family before placing a dog. If you are interested in knowing what dogs we have available, please visit Our Dogs page! This does not account for the cost of medical care provided to our dogs with complex medical issues. All dogs placed by DLRR will be spayed or neutered. Several ailments, including some types of cancer, are prevented by spaying or neutering. Most of the dogs we intake are young adults who have outgrown their puppy cuteness and are quite active. The Dog-a-Log shows all our dogs available for adoption. Not all available dogs are in foster care, so information about them may be limited. The foster knows the most about the dog and will be able to answer any questions you might have, as well as to arrange a meeting with the dog and your family. Our fosters will advise if you are a match for their Lab. If the foster lets you know you are a match, you have 24 hours to call the foster back with your decision. The Lab cannot be shown to another family during this hour period. Please keep in mind, rescuing a Lab is a commitment, not a convenience, and most rescued dogs need extra love and patience to feel secure in their new environment and may require some time and training to become their best! Steps to Adopting a Dog: Make sure a Lab is for you. If you have any questions, please contact us. Talk it over with everyone in your household, and make sure that everyone feels the same way about adopting a rescue dog. Think about your schedule and decide when and if you will have time to spend with your dog. Who will be responsible for taking care of the dog? Finally, take a look at your home. Where will the dog sleep? Where will the dog eat? Fill out our Adoption Application. Complete our online adoption application. We reserve the right to refuse any application for any reason. A DLRR representative will contact you for a home visit. One of our volunteers will contact you to arrange to visit your home. Cases in which a Virtual Home Visit is not possible will be put on hold and applicants will be notified of the delay. The volunteer will virtually visit your home to meet your family and listen to your needs. This helps to determine whether the home is a suitable environment for a Labrador Retriever and help us find the Lab best suited for your family. The Dog-a-Log showcases our adoptable dogs and is emailed twice weekly to approved adopters. Your whole family will meet the dog that may be right for you. We require that all members of the family are present to make sure everyone agrees on the perfect match. If you do not feel a dog is the right dog for you, or if the foster family feels this particular dog may not be the right fit for your family, we will begin the process again to find the perfect dog for your family. Wait 24 hours. Once you have decided on your perfect dog, you must wait at least 24 hours before taking your new Lab home. This is designed to give you time to fully consider your decision. It also gives you the chance to prepare your home to be ready for your new family member and purchase any items such as a collar, bowls, food, bedding and toys, and take time to review the First 7 Days document that was given to you at your home visit. Take your new family member home. You will then pay DLRR your adoption fee. We will provide support to you after the adoption to make sure that your new friend becomes an integral part of your family. If you have any questions about our adoption process, please contact our Adoption Coordinator. DLRR reserves the right to refuse any application for any reason.

Chinese origins[ edit ] Pugs were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century. The pet pugs were highly valued by Chinese Emperors, and the royal dogs were kept in luxury and guarded by soldiers. In Tibet , Buddhist monks kept pugs as pets in their monasteries. Pugs were painted by Goya in Spain, and in Italy they rode up front on private carriages, dressed in jackets and pantaloons that matched those of the coachman. They were used by the military to track animals and people, and were also employed as guard dogs. His self-portrait , which is now in London's Tate Gallery , includes his pug, Trump. Every carriage I meet here has a Pug in it. Many responded to the breed's image of anti-functionalism and diminutive size during this period. The modern pug's appearance probably changed after when a new wave of pugs were imported directly from China. These pugs had shorter legs and the modern-style pug nose. The British aristocrat Lady Brassey is credited with making black pugs fashionable after she brought some back from China in .Hogarth's painting from the 18th century depicts the originally longer muzzle, as well as the picture in a edition of Brehms Tierleben. Since there has been a trend in some countries to breed "retro pugs". Following the deaths of pugs and other brachycephalic breeds, several airlines either banned their transport in cargo or enacted seasonal restrictions. Pugs have elongated palates. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord.
