newfoundland and labrador puppies
However a small white marking on the chest is also permitted by the AKC. What is Brindle Coloring? Brindle is actually a type of pattern that can be seen on Labradors. In fact, it can even be seen on rodents and horses. Brindle pattern appears as irregular dark brown or black stripes and flecks over a brown background. This is when brindling is so extreme that it seems like the shades have reversed. Dogs with reverse brindles look as if they have lighter stripes over a dark base of fur. Not all brindle dogs have this pattern all over. You might find Labs with slight brindling on parts of their bodies, and solid color fur elsewhere. Brindle Lab Genetics So, how does such an interesting pattern occur in dogs? For this pattern, we need to look at the K locus. There are 3 alleles that interact at this locus. These are K or Kb dominant black , Kbr brindle , and k non-solid black. K is dominant to Kbr, but Kbr is dominant to k. If a Lab has either of the combinations above, any phaeomelanin in his coat red pigment will be brindled. But the appearance of this depends on certain genes at the A locus. If you want to show your Lab, you will have to avoid the brindle pattern. AKC only accepts the three standard colors: black, yellow, and liver. The only marking that is acceptable on Labs is a small white marking on the chest. This is only really a problem if you want to show your Lab at AKC shows. As long as they have been bred responsibly from healthy parents, they will be as healthy as any other Lab. For a closer look at Labrador health, you can check out our breed guide. But at a glance, here are some health conditions to know about before you bring home a brindle Lab. This week, I come to you with some useful less information about Brindle Labs- something I only recently discovered exists. How did I come by this information? I know, I know. Santa Hat. The smile on that pups face. Are you melting?? Now focus a little closer and look at the paws on these pups. Black lab in the face, something else on the paws. Yes, I know the next question- and yes, they are pure bred Labrador Retrievers. The Labrador Retriever, according to the American Kennel Club is ranked 1 in popularity out of breeds. They are sporty, friendly, social, and most commonly referred to as the top of the line when it comes to family pets. With their amazingly soft ears and what looks like a never ending smile — how can you not like them? Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification. A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable. White hairs from aging or scarring are not to be misinterpreted as brindling. Black- Blacks are all black. A black with brindle markings or a black with tan markings is a disqualification. Yellow- Yellows may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and underparts of the dog. Chocolate- Chocolates can vary in shade from light to dark chocolate. Chocolate with brindle or tan markings is a disqualification. If only the 3 colors are permissible, then what is a brindle lab? To answer this question, let us first lets looks at what makes Lab coloring. Unlike what you might think, Lab coloration is not based on just one gene. It is actually the result of two different genes, one coding for Black and Chocolate and a separate gene coding for yellow. These are referred to as the B gene and the E gene. Before your eyes glaze over like my husbands did , here is a visual graphic to help bring home the basics. The basics of this image shows that if the dog has at least 1 B and no ee, it will always be black. If the dog has ee, regardless of the B gene, it will always be yellow. And if the dog has bb two copies of the recessive b it will be chocolate unless in the presence of ee. This is why chocolate is the least common, due to the fact that it cannot have a B or ee in order to show this trait. Black is most common, because all the dog needs is 1 B and at least 1 E and it is black. Though the presence of two recessive ee will beat out any combo and make the lab yellow. So what is brindle? Brindle is defined as : a brownish or tawny color of animal fur, with streaks of other color. It is fairly common in breeds, such as Boxers, but incredibly rare in pure bred Labs. My first example of this cool coloration comes from our newest addition to the family, Rosalee a. My little girl was 1 of 3 brindle labs to come out of her litter. Check out her beautiful brindle coloration, she has slightly more golden colored fur on her left paw. So are brindle labs pure bred? The simple answer is YES. Although, even our vet had assumed that there must be a mix of something in there. Most people, like me, have never seen a pure bred brindle Lab. When you see a pure bred Labrador Retriever, most think of solid coloration. The mixed color of a brindle can often be confusing. But lets take a look at our girls parents: Mom, is a pure-bred black Lab left image and Dad is pure-bred yellow Lab right picture These two have mated before. Their previous litter consisted of 8 pups: 4 black, 3 yellow, and one chocolate. Looking at that in genetic terms, we know that Dad has the ee gene making him yellow, but also that he must carry at least 1 b gene. Mom must carry at least 1 e gene, to make yellow pups, and 1 b gene creating the 1 chocolate pup. So what gene is responsible for that? This is actually due to another gene, not the standard B and E genes that we think about when predicting lab coat color. What we have learned is that this gene is actually at the K locus. For most labs their K gene is dominant, which is why we note most labs as solid colors. In the case of brindle labs, they have the recessive version of the K gene, known as kbr. These genes are so rare to show up in the litter because the K is completely dominant over the kbr. Meaning that the only way for brindle to show is if both parents donate a recessive, meaning the pup has a kbr from both parents. As you can tell, this makes it very hard for any breeder to know the likelihood of brindle pups. Has this gene always been a part of pure-bred Labs? Again, the simple answer is yes. The majority of Labs in the beginning were black, with yellow being the less frequent color. According to vetgen. They have always been there, simply at a very low frequency. Making it a little confusing why they do not recognize it as they did when the chocolate coloration came about, since it is just a matter of recessive genes being passed down. Are brindle labs desirable? Obviously this is a matter of preference. Some breeders may use the uniqueness of the coat color to charge more for dogs like this. It could even be something that they breed for if demand for unique Labs is up. I had never heard of brindle before picking out my Rosie. We were planning on getting a yellow until my kids saw pups with brown feet and they were in love. For us, we thought they were so different and embraced that. The AKC does not permit brindle coloration, making me believe the majority of breeders do not prefer this in their litters. Many might even give a discount for pups that do not come out with solid coloration and cannot be pedigree dogs. I guess it is all comes down to a matter of preference. Do you have a brindle Lab? Just about everyone has heard of the Labrador Retriever breed. However, have you heard of or ever seen the other Labrador Retriever coat colors? The coloring is very similar to a Rottweiler or a Doberman Pinscher. If you want to see a picture of Egan take a look at the article on Black and Tan Labrador Retrievers. Brindle Labrador Retriever The second unusual color variation in the Labrador coat color is brindle. As I mentioned in my previous article the brindle coloring is seen less often. Labs with brindling have tan speckling on their forelegs, muzzles, and chest. Here at Puppy In Training we were lucky enough to receive some pictures from one of our readers who has a couple brindle Labrador Retrievers. Each leg has a different pattern. Her inner thighs have yellow hair as does her butt area. At 8 months I began training her to hunt pheasant, quail and chukar. Often times she will hold a strong point and I have hunted her with some professionals and she holds her own. At nearly six months she swims like a fish and retrieves very well. Raising a guide dog requires a specific training program as we prepare our puppies to lead their blind handlers in many different places and situations. One thing that caught my interest after reading the short snippet about Maia and Tora the Brindle labs is that they are being trained as hunting dogs. I would be interested to see exactly what kind of training a hunting dog goes through. What do you think of these Purebred Brindle Labrador Retrievers?

How to measure a French Bulldog neck for a collar by using a measuring tape. Handy Hint: Most pet suppliers offer extra small and small collars. For adult Frenchies I would recommend small collar sizes and for French Bulldog puppies from 8 weeks and up I would recommend the extra small collar sizes. What size collar for a French Bulldog puppy? Frenchies come in different shapes and sizes, with their sometimes being big differences between male and female puppies. French Bulldog puppy collar sizes Here is some very rough guidance on what size collar is best for a French Bulldog puppy from 8 weeks of age and up. So, one of the best ways to select the right collar is to measure their neck. This can be done using the steps below: Firstly, you will need to get your dog to stand on a flat surface. Having treats to hand might be a good idea! The withers are the point where the neck and the back join which is just above the shoulder blade. Be sure not to pull the tape measure too tight or let it hang too loose. Now that you know the precise measurements of your Frenchie you are now able to compare these with the ranges that collar sizes are available in to ensure that you are buying the right size. What to consider when buying French Bulldog collars Buying a collar for a French Bulldog is totally different from buying a collar for any other dog. Think of breeds such as Pugs, Chihuahuas and of course our beloved Frenchies. Due to this, collars need to ensure that they are anti-choke collars and are neck friendly. Another thing to consider is the material that the collar is made from. Collars are a great alternative for Frenchies that are not comfortable in a harness. If your dog is able to walk on the lead without pulling, this may be a better solution. Some experts are of the opinion that to train your French Bulldog effectively you must have both a collar and a harness and we completely agree. The question that should be asked is when collars and harnesses should be used independently. Collars can place added pressure onto the neck and potentially lead to choking. I know of one owner who used a cat harness on their 8-week-old Frenchie puppy instead of a collar for this very reason. Why choose a collar? Puppies: puppies tend to dislike harnesses as they make them feel uncomfortable. As with everything there are certain pros and cons to using collars and they are listed below: Pros to collars They tend to be the most comfortable for the dog and so can be worn for longer during the day. This makes them ideal for identification purposes. There tends to be a wider variety of collars in different materials, styles and comforts. Easy to put on and take off. Cons to collars Depending on how well the collar is fitted it is possible for the dog to slip out of it. Using collars on brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs, they are prone to thyroid and trachea damage if they excessively pull when they are on the lead. There is a possibility that collars can get caught and suffocate dogs. It is advised that dogs do not wear their collars when unattended in the home. Which collar I recommend for a Frenchie The collar we use with Claude for every day use is this one on Amazon view prices. This one here is adjustable, so should work with your puppy and then you can upgrade into the later years. You can buy it in size ranges from extra small through to small. Why choose a harness? Longer walks: when you plan on taking your dog for a longer walk it may be better to fit them with a harness as this will evenly spread the pressure should they pull on their lead. Training purposes: puppies are highly distracted when they are young. Anything will make them excited and they may pull on their lead regardless of the pressure they are feeling round their neck with a collar. Using a harness will provide more control over your puppy. Although seemingly preferred by many French Bulldog owners, there are still pros and cons to the harness and they are listed below: Pros to harnesses Less pull stress with a harness as the pressure is evenly distributed around the body. Better control over your dog whilst walking. Reduces risk of neck injuries that collars may cause. A harness will not choke the dog if it were to get caught. Front clip harnesses can cause tracheal issues. Front hook harnesses can cause discomfort if not fitted properly. No matter what your preference of collar or harness, it is important to understand the differences between them and when both may be useful to you. For the best results it is always best to get both a collar and a harness so you are covered for all circumstances. Which harness I recommend for a Frenchie The one we use with Claude on longer walks out into the forest is this one on Amazon view prices. The previous harness we had was really tricky to get on and off Claude, but not with this one. Why Frenchies have stocky neck sizes Originally bred in England as a smaller version of the English Bulldog, French Bulldogs were introduced into France when they made their travels with their people across the English Channel. There, the breed was crossed with terriers and pugs to become what we know and love today! You can read more about the history here. This mix of breeds resulted in very strong and thick necks. If you own a Frenchie, you will know exactly what I mean! As you can see with our Claude photos, his is actually bigger than the average and so he tends to wear a larger collar. The best advice I can give you is to do what we did in the end and actually take your Frenchie puppy or dog into the pet store and let them test out a few collar and harness variations in store. However, if you already know the neck size and have measured your puppy up, you can scroll up to find a few recommendations on the best collars and harnesses currently available on the market. Conclusion Understanding the Importance of Neck Size The neck size of a French Bulldog is not just a superficial consideration; it directly impacts their comfort, health, and well-being. Choosing a suitable collar or harness that fits correctly is crucial for their overall happiness and safety. An ill-fitting or tight collar can cause discomfort and chafing around the neck area, leading to skin irritation or even sores. Moreover, it can restrict their movements and make it difficult for them to breathe correctly. French Bulldogs, like many brachycephalic breeds , already have a compromised respiratory system due to their unique facial structure. Wearing a too tight collar can further impede their breathing, exacerbating any existing respiratory challenges. In addition to discomfort and breathing difficulties, an incorrectly fitted collar can pose a risk of potential injuries. If the collar is too loose, your Frenchie may easily slip out, increasing the chances of them getting lost or injured while roaming free. Conversely, if the collar is too tight, it can put excessive pressure on the neck, potentially causing strain, injury, or even damage to the trachea. Look for options that provide a snug yet comfortable fit, allowing enough room for your Frenchie to breathe and move freely. Consider opting for collars or harnesses made from soft, padded materials to minimize discomfort or rubbing against their delicate skin. Quick-release buckles are another beneficial feature, enabling you to remove the collar or harness swiftly in case of emergencies. Remember, the right fit is key. If your Frenchie experiences weight fluctuations, ensure that their neckwear remains appropriately adjusted to prevent discomfort or potential hazards. Factors Affecting French Bulldog Neck Sizes French Bulldog The neck size of a French Bulldog can vary significantly due to various factors such as age, genetics, gender, and overall body structure. Owners must recognize that there is no universal, one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to the average neck size of Frenchies. However, understanding these variables can provide valuable insights and help you estimate the average neck size for your furry companion. Age: As French Bulldogs grow from puppies to adults, their neck size will naturally increase. It is essential to regularly measure their neck size during their growth stages to ensure proper fitting collars or harnesses at each phase. Genetics: Like any other physical attribute, the neck size of a French Bulldog can be influenced by genetics. Different bloodlines and breeding variations may contribute to variations in neck size among individual Frenchies. Gender: In some cases, there may be subtle differences in neck size between male and female French Bulldogs. However, this difference is typically minimal and should be a minor factor when determining the average neck size. Here are approximate average neck sizes for French Bulldogs at different stages of life: French Bulldog Puppies weeks : The average neck size for puppies in this age range typically ranges from 8 to 12 inches 20 to 30 cm. However, measuring your specific Frenchie puppy is crucial to ensure an accurate fit. Adult French Bulldogs 1 year and older : On average, adult French Bulldogs typically have neck sizes ranging from 12 to 16 inches 30 to 40 cm. However, keep in mind that there can be variations in neck size among adult Frenchies. Soft measuring tapes, typically used for sewing or tailoring, work best for this purpose. Prepare your Frenchie: Ensure that your French Bulldog is calm and relaxed before proceeding with the measurement. This will help you get a more accurate reading. This is the area you want to measure. Wrap the measuring tape: Gently wrap the measuring tape around the base of the neck, ensuring it is snug but not too tight. The tape should be positioned just above the shoulders and comfortably around the neck. Take the measurement: Once the tape is in place, note the measurement in inches or centimeters. Ensure that the measurement is taken with the tape level and parallel to the ground to avoid any inaccuracies. This measurement will be a reliable reference point for selecting the suitable collar or harness size, ensuring a comfortable fit for your furry friend. French Bulldog puppies undergo rapid development during their early months, including an increase in neck size. As their bodies grow, their necks will also proportionally grow in size. To ensure the comfort and safety of your Frenchie puppy, it is crucial to regularly measure their neck size and adjust their collars and harnesses accordingly. If their neckwear becomes too tight or restrictive, it can cause discomfort, difficulty breathing, or even pose a risk of injury. Comfort and movement: Puppies are full of energy and love to explore their surroundings. Wearing a properly fitted collar or harness ensures that they can move freely, play, and explore comfortably without any restrictions. Regularly measuring their neck size and adjusting their accessories can mitigate these risks and provide a secure fit. As your French Bulldog puppy grows, please continue to monitor their neck size and adjust their collars or harnesses accordingly. Frenchie Neck Size Tips for Breathing and Health French Bulldog French Bulldogs, along with other brachycephalic breeds, have a unique facial structure that can result in respiratory challenges. Their shortened snouts and compact airways make it more difficult for them to breathe compared to breeds with longer muzzles. As such, it is crucial to consider their respiratory health when selecting collars or harnesses. Special considerations for exercise: French Bulldogs may have limitations during physical activity due to their respiratory challenges. Managing respiratory issues: Some French Bulldogs may already have pre-existing respiratory conditions. A veterinarian can offer specific advice on managing these conditions and recommend collar or harness options that provide optimal support without compromising their respiratory health. This expert guidance will help you select accessories that minimize the risk of breathing restrictions and provide your Frenchie with the comfort they need. Here are some key considerations and recommendations: Choose products designed for brachycephalic breeds: Look for collars or harnesses specifically designed to accommodate the needs of brachycephalic dogs like French Bulldogs. These products are typically crafted with their unique anatomy in mind and aim to minimize discomfort or breathing restrictions. Wide bands distribute pressure more evenly and reduce the risk of choking or causing discomfort. Seek padded materials: Collars or harnesses with padding offer additional comfort and help prevent irritation or chafing. Look for quick-release buckles: Quick-release buckles are an essential safety feature. They allow you to easily and quickly remove the collar or harness in an emergency or if your Frenchie becomes entangled in something. This ensures that you can promptly free your pup without causing any harm. Consider using harnesses: Harnesses can be an excellent choice for French Bulldogs due to their ability to distribute pressure more evenly across the chest and shoulders, reducing strain on the neck. This can be particularly beneficial for Frenchies with respiratory challenges or neck sensitivity. Remember to choose flexible options with wide bands, padded materials, and quick-release buckles. If appropriate, consider using a harness to provide additional support and reduce strain on their neck. Ill-fitting neckwear can lead to discomfort, potential injury, or even escape. Place the tape snugly around the base of their neck, where the collar typically rests. Ensure it is neither too tight nor loose, allowing your Frenchie to breathe comfortably. Avoid overly tight collars: Collars that are too tight can cause discomfort, restrict breathing, and potentially lead to injury. Select a collar size that provides a secure fit without causing discomfort or constriction. Prevent loose collars: Loose collars risk slipping off or getting caught on objects, potentially leading to accidents or escapes. Over time, collars may stretch or become worn, so inspecting and adjusting as needed is necessary. Adjustments for growth and weight fluctuations: French Bulldogs, especially puppies, experience growth spurts and potential weight fluctuations. Periodically reassess their neck size and adjust the collar or harness to ensure a comfortable and secure fit. These precautions will help ensure their safety, prevent escape, and promote a positive and enjoyable experience during walks and other activities. The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.
Well, the short answer is that while the English Cream has a lighter coat, it is still simply a Golden Retriever. However, held to slightly different standards in most ways they are exactly the same. Most people ask me if the English Golden is blockier or bigger and the answer is no! But lets go over the European history and breed standard of the English Cream Golden and what the differences are. When different Golden Retriever Clubs across the world describe the breed using words like 'rich' and 'lustrous' in the U. While in Europe, lighter colors are specifically mentioned. So breeders hoping to achieve the best match to the standard and win show titles would err towards light-colored puppies. European Golden Retriever Size Another point of difference in the breed standards is size. There has been no known difference in temperament. The Golden is known across the world as the ultimate people dog. The Golden Retriever can trace its roots back to the 19th century. But, differences in opinion about the ideal Golden Retriever has meant that in each country, breeders have typically tried to achieve slightly different looks. Around the same time, fans of the breed started taking them to America and Canada. Different breed standards This recognition by three separate breed registries is the crux of why European Goldens are sometimes described as being distinct from American Goldens. Each breed registry has drafted and agreed its own description of the ideal Golden Retriever. This is known as a breed standard. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. We even have all types of golden retrievers for sale! At My Golden Retriever Puppies, we pride ourselves on our golden retriever price being fair and affordable for high quality puppies. Location Information for Raleigh Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. So bernedoodles are typically characterized as great companions they are obsessed with their humans , extremely smart and trainable, can have a nice steady energy level. They can be great for a variety of types of families and individuals - they are typically great with young kids, and with training, can be great for busy young families. They can also be great adventure buddies and loyal companions for folks in all life stages. Because of their low-non shed coats, they can be great for families and individuals with mild to moderate allergies. Because of their furnishings the fluffiness around their muzzle, eyebrows, and legs , they have hair on their coat instead of fur. Because of this, bernedoodles can be considered moderate to high maintenance for grooming. They will need routine brushing and combing by their owners, plus professional grooming every weeks. Bernedoodles are characterized as very smart. Because of this, it is important to fill their need for mental stimulation and give them training and activities. They can be easy to train compared to some other breeds, but it is important to socialize them with new people and new environments during the first 12 months. The Bernese Mountain Dog was bred to be protective of their families and farms, so they can be aloof around strangers sometime as a breed, so if you want your bernedoodle enjoy new people and new surroundings, give them those experiences as a puppy and that will go with them into adulthood! If you are able to put the time into training, especially the first 12 months, they can be dogs that can enjoy all aspects of your life because of their good and trained behavior. One more characteristic to note is that bernedoodles are extremely loyal animals and love their family and pack. Bernedoodles do not necessarily work well with folks who out of the house a lot while they are left home, or would prefer a dog that can be a bit more independent. They are great with folks who want a bond with their pup and a pup that is considered a companion. Doodles also typically are great with other family dogs - and getting 2 doodles a year apart can be a great experience. Meet the Mamas. Since the Bernedoodle is a combination of two different breeds, the puppies will have a combination of personality traits from each parent breed depending on the amount of each breed involved in the cross. It can even depend on the individual pooch — litter mates that have the same parents might turn out to favor different lineages, some leaning more towards their Poodle or Bernese roots than others. From the Bernese Mountain Dog side, Bernedoodles can be a little wary around strangers so early socialization is important. Toy and mini Bernedoodles also tend to be more energetic and stubborn than standard Bernedoodles. This also means that separation anxiety could end up being a problem for Bernedoodles in case they are not properly socialized. Bernedoodle Health For the most part, the Bernedoodle is a healthy breed. In fact, the creators behind this designer breed claim that elimination of health issues typical for the purebred dogs is what drove them to crossbreed dogs in the first place. However, in no scenario is it possible for someone to predict how healthy any dog will be throughout their lifetime: the best you can hope for is that a proper diet, plenty of exercise and regular visits to the vet will help keep your pooch healthy and happy. Life Expectancy The Bernedoodle is still considered a new breed still being perfected so there is not enough information about their lifespan. While there is no way to say with certainty how long Bernedoodles live, breeders estimate that the average life expectancy of a Bernedoodle is between 12 and 15 years. Of course, there are bound to be slight variations due to the difference in sizes, so a tiny Bernedoodle might live to be 17 years old, while the standard sized are closer to the shorter end of the range. Exercise Requirements The activity level of Bernedoodles varies depending on breeding, but they are typically a moderately active breed. They do love their outdoor adventures and will be more than happy to join you on a hike or your morning jog, but they do not need intensive exercise to stay healthy and happy. With that being said, the Bernedoodle can be a good choice for apartment dwellers provided they have enough space and are willing to take their pet on long walks and to the dog park. This means that Bernedoodles adapt to various lifestyles, including different activity levels. You could be letting them roam about in a securely fenced backyard and maybe play with another canine companion, arrange a visit to the dog park for a game of fetch or simply have a daily walk around the block. The smaller varieties — toy and mini Bernedoodles — tend to be more active than the larger varieties. In any case, a good daily walk should be enough to satisfy the exercise requirements of a Bernedoodle. A good idea is to offer puzzle toys and interactive toys, too. These will keep your pet entertained and offer a challenge for their smart minds. Bernedoodle Coat Bernedoodles come in any combination of white, black, and brown. It is also possible for Bernedoodles to be tricolor or sable — black, white and brown. This color combination is also the most difficult to achieve, and as such, the most desirable. Recently, some breeders have presented a merle Bernedoodle which displays a marbled white and gray pattern on a black coat. Puppies with this coat are very rare and usually the most expensive. Just as Bernedoodles come in different colors according to breeding, they also have different types of coats. Most Bernedoodles have long, wavy coats that shed minimally. Straight-coated Bernedoodles are less common and tend to shed more than wavy or curly-coated Bernedoodles. The goal with crossbreeding these two popular breeds was to create a perfect companion for families of all shapes and sizes. Bernedoodle Grooming The amount of shedding depends on the type of coat your dog has inherited from either parent. Those with a straighter type are prone to shed more, whereas if its coat is curly it will tend to shed less. Brushing somewhat regularly will help to prevent matting. Bernedoodle Training If bred well, the Bernedoodle should be an easily trainable dog because it inherits intelligence, eagerness to please, and a calm demeanor from its parents. As with other breeds, it is good to train and socialize your dog while still a puppy to avoid destructive and nuisance behavior later in life. During the puppy stage Bernedoodles can be a little headstrong, but this tends to lessen as the dog matures and receives training. It will make both of your lives so much easier in the long run. No Why is the Pug so expensive? Pugs are often considered expensive due to a combination of factors, including their popularity, demand, and the costs associated with breeding and raising them. Here are some reasons why pugs may have a higher price tag: Breeding challenges: Pugs have a unique physical structure with a short snout, which can lead to health issues. Breeding pugs requires careful selection to minimize these problems, which can increase the cost of obtaining healthy and well-bred puppies. Health concerns: Pugs are prone to several health conditions, such as respiratory problems, eye issues, and skin allergies. Responsible breeders undertake health testing and provide necessary veterinary care, which contributes to the overall cost. Limited availability: While Pugs are a popular breed, finding a reputable breeder can be challenging. Responsible breeders may have a limited number of litters each year, which increases demand and drives up prices. Popularity: Pugs have gained significant popularity over the years due to their charming appearance and friendly temperament. Increased demand for Pugs can drive prices up, as breeders can charge more when there is high demand for a particular breed. Breeding expenses: Responsible breeders invest a considerable amount of time, effort, and money into breeding and raising their puppies. This includes expenses such as health checks, vaccinations, proper nutrition, and socialization. These costs are passed on to potential buyers. So just be ready for more than the price of a puppy — unexpected vet bills, food , treats, toys, etc. This is pretty much the same price as a Pug from any reputable breeder, as you would expect to get a purebred Pug from a reputable breeder. Female Pug: Which Is Better? The initial cost of a puppy alone will set you back at least a few hundred dollars. But why are they so expensive? There is no one factor that directly determines how much a Pug puppy will cost. There are multiple factors often working hand in hand. Getting some background knowledge in these things will give you a better grasp on what makes Pug puppies so expensive and where your money is going. This will also help you figure out the right Pug that fits within your budget. Here are some of the major factors affecting Pug prices: Age: As a rule of thumb, puppies typically cost more than adult dogs. This is no different when it comes to Pugs. Pug puppies are typically more expensive as the process of breeding can cost the breeders a lot of money. From health screenings to vitamins and sometimes even c-sections, it takes a lot of money to keep the mama dog happy. Appearance: Although there are only two registered Pug colors in the American Kennel Club, Pugs can often be seen in a wide assortment of shades. Rarer brindle coats tend to fetch a higher price than solid colored pups, and fawn or apricot Pugs with a black mask are also experiencing a rise in cost. A Pug from a reputable breeder, although expensive, will have perfect health, a good temperament, and no pre-existing medical conditions such as PDE or Pug dog encephalitis. A lot of reputable breeders also breed dogs from champion bloodlines, which ensures that the Pugs will inherit the best traits from their parents. A Pug with a superior lineage will cost significantly more than a regular Pug. Health Screenings: A vast majority of Pug breeders usually screen their puppies for pre-existing health issues before selling them. Healthy puppies with no signs of underlying medical issues will usually have a heftier price tag than others and will save you vet expenses in the long run. Training Received: Although Pugs are good family dogs, they can be quite stubborn and challenging to train. So if a Pug breeder trains their puppies before selling them, expect the price to be relatively higher than usual. Bringing home trained puppies is always worth it, though, as it saves you time and effort. These are just some of the most significant things that affect the price of a Pug dog. Of course, this list is by no means complete. Rescues generally have a lower price tag for their Pugs. What makes the deal even more ideal is that most shelter dogs have already been fully vaccinated. Additionally, many of them have already been dewormed, spayed or neutered, or even microchipped in some cases. Here are some of the initial expenses for your Pug puppy: Food and Treats: Deciding between wet or dry food is crucial in the first few days that your Pug dog comes home. If your Pug is a picky eater, you may need to try out different brands and flavors to see which one your pup likes best. This also applies to doggy treats. Ultimately though, stainless steel bowls will withstand more wear and tear. Crate: For first-time dog owners, a crate is one of the most important things to invest in. Crate training your pup is important, as it introduces them to a safe space when they feel overstimulated or unsafe. It also helps transport your Pug dog to places like the vet or during car rides. Leashes and Collars: As soon as you bring your new dog home, it is important that you get them acquainted with a leash and collar. Some dogs take a while to get adjusted to wearing harnesses, so starting pups with a collar while getting them used to daily walks is optimal. Toys: Pugs often have a reputation for being lazy, sleepy dogs, but this is not the case at all. A well-stimulated, happy Pug will be playful and alert rather than spend most of its time sleeping. Enrichment objects such as chew toys and puzzle toys are sure to keep your puppy busy and your slippers and charging cables safe from bites. Grooming Essentials: Although they have short fur, Pugs are double-coated. This means that they shed more than other short-haired dogs. Deworming, Flea, and Tick Medications: A lot of Pug breeders typically cover deworming, flea, and tick prevention before selling their puppy. Initial Vaccine Shots: Before a Pug puppy turns one year old, they need to complete their first set of vaccine shots. The usual shots most dogs need are for distemper, parainfluenza, rabies, parvovirus DHPP , and hepatitis. Neutering or Spaying: If you have no plans of breeding your Pug, it may be good to consider neutering or spaying them. If done at the right age, getting your dog fixed will help prevent the risk of some cancers and uterine infections. Dog License: While it may seem unnecessary at first, licensing your dog is a great way to have a permanent formal record of your ownership. This is especially helpful if your dog gets lost. Licensing also lets people know if your dog is up to date on its rabies vaccinations. A microchip will come in handy if ever you lose your pooch. It does not, however, work as a GPS tracker. If your lost puppy gets taken to a shelter or a clinic, they can easily scan the chip and contact you immediately. These include vitamins , pet-safe wipes, poop bags, and a poop scooper. A few toys should do the trick, but make sure to provide them with at least a few puzzle toys to get their brains working. Pugs thrive on attention and most are happy with an hour or so of playtime in the yard, two walks per day, and an occasional trip to the park to socialize with other dogs. Training your Pug beyond basic obedience training is a great way to bond with them and provide mental stimulation. Pugs are eager to please and attentive to their owners, so teaching them tricks or training them in agility are excellent ways to occupy their minds and enhance your relationship. Pugs only eat about pounds of food per year and are mostly healthy, although setting aside extra cash to deal with emergencies is a good idea. Food, medication, and pet insurance—if you purchase it—will be the highest regular costs, but occasional vet visits and extra medication for potential eye problems could become significant outlays as well. Additional Costs to Factor In Most Pug owners have success training their dogs themselves, but some people still opt for professional training. Dog sitting is another additional cost that only applies to some people. Before you purchase your new buddy, make sure you can budget enough money per month to cover food and medication costs. It is also a good idea to have money set aside to cover unexpected medical expenses. Training games, obedience training, and makeshift agility courses are excellent inexpensive ways to keep your Pug happy and make for some great owner-dog bonding time. Your upfront costs could be significantly reduced if you adopt a dog from a local shelter. The main drivers are food, medications like heartworm and flea and tick prevention, and pet insurance. Life Span Did You Know? While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. This designer dog breed originated in Australia around .The main goal of the Labradoodle was to create a hypoallergenic guide dog for people living with disabilities who were also allergic to dog fur and dander. Now, they are still a popular choice for service, guide, and therapy dogs and are also a popular companion dog. Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are both friendly, gentle, intelligent, and affectionate dog breeds. The Labradoodle tends to be similar. They are open and friendly and crave human attention and affection. They are happiest when they are with people. Labradoodles also tend to have an energetic and playful personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and strangers. They are alert enough to bark or let you know when someone is at the door, but they are not generally good watchdogs or guard dogs as they are more interested in making friends. A Labradoodle is a highly adaptable dog breed. They do very well in homes with space to run and they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They also do well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat and cold. Because they enjoy being around people, they do not generally like to be left alone for long periods of time. They can also become bored if not given enough attention, exercise, or mental stimulation, which can result in destructive behavior. This dog breed is generally healthy, but they do have the chance of inheriting common health conditions from both of the parent breeds. Some health conditions to be aware of include elbow and hip dysplasia, ear infections, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and epilepsy. Good breeding practices can reduce the likelihood of passing on many of these health issues. Be sure to talk with the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and ask to see any health clearances; this can help allay potential health concerns. A Labradoodle tends to be eager to please and highly intelligent, which makes them highly trainable. They are a good fit for dog owners of any experience level. As with most dog breeds, Labradoodles respond best to training that is consistent and uses positive reinforcement. There are some grooming tasks that are common to every dog breed. When it comes to coat care, it can vary with a Labradoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that is also high maintenance in terms of brushing, trimming, and professional grooming. Labs tend to have a higher shedding coat that needs minimal brushing and grooming. For the most part, a Labradoodle will have a low or non-shedding coat that will need to be brushed a few times a week. But, they can have a higher shedding coat should they take after their Labrador parent. You may also need a few professional grooming sessions throughout the year. Nail trimming once a month is usually enough to keep movement comfortable and prevent longer nails from snagging on things. Proper dental care for your dog will help prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Drop-down ears are more prone to infection because floppy ears are more likely to trap moisture, dirt, and debris. This will make grooming throughout their life a much more enjoyable process for both you and your dog. It can even become a bonding time for you both as well. Labradoodles tend to be high-energy dogs. They require a few daily walks plus some time to run and play in order to stay happy and healthy. They certainly love to play and you may tire out before they do sometimes. They may calm down a little as they get to be a couple of years old, but they tend to be quite energetic as puppies. Going swimming with your dog , taking a hike with them, going on a trip to the dog park, playing a game of fetch, and more are all great supplemental activities to ensure your Labradoodle gets plenty of exercise. You can even train them to compete in dog sports like dock diving, flyball, agility, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Labradoodle will usually stand between 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. Labradoodles generally live 12 — 14 years. In addition to genetics affecting their personalities, another thing that can affect their personalities is their past. However, once your male Golden gets neutered , this will slow down a lot more on this later. Click here to download the potty training cheat sheet to make potty training much easier! Males have louder, deeper barks than females because of their bigger size. In fact, Charlie, a male Golden Retriever from Australia, owns the world record for loudest bark. But on the other hand, females often bark more than males. This is due to them usually being more protective more on this later. Female Golden Retriever Humping Yes, we all know that males hump. But did you know that female Goldens hump, too? Both males and females hump because of sexual urges, displaying dominance, playing, and other reasons. Neutering or spaying will help decrease it, but expect to deal with humping no matter which gender you get. Some owners report that males and females tend to have different personality traits. However, many of these reports are anecdotal, rather than proven. Some owners believe that their male Goldens tend to be far more attached to members of the family, while female Goldens are more independent. A male Golden might be more likely to stay glued at your hip, eager to please you and earn your affection. For example, unspayed female Goldens have an increased risk of conditions like hip dysplasia. Improvements in screening and careful breeding have been lowering the rates of this condition in recent years. Females are also more likely to develop ocular myasthenia and adrenocortical insufficiency. Overall, male and female Goldens have the same life expectancy, reaching anywhere between 10 and 12 years. In some cases, both male and female Golden Retrievers can even live between 14 and 15 years. While all Goldens are highly intelligent, some puppy owners report that their female Goldens seem to pick up concepts slightly quicker than males, making them more adept at associating prompts and actions. This may lead to the assumption that females are easier to train. Goldens can often correctly respond to commands starting as young as 12 weeks old, whether they are male or female. Working with an experienced professional who can show you positive training methods can help make things like obedience training much easier, no matter whether you have a male Golden puppy or a female one. Male vs Female Golden Retriever Key Difference 6: Family Compatibility While Golden Retrievers make great family pets, there are a few things about the two genders that may make you choose one over the other for your household. Since female Goldens are sometimes reported to have calmer dispositions, they may be a nice choice for families that include children or seniors. Female Goldens are sometimes believed to be more careful and observant around small children, whereas male Goldens might be more carefree and playful. Due to their larger size, a male Golden Retriever might be able to knock children or senior adults over if they get hyper. Goldens of either gender are remarkably friendly, but this energetic spirit could cause injury to certain family members who cannot handle the size of a medium-to-large breed dog. Female dogs enter their heat cycle about twice a year, and during this time they will need to be kept away from other dogs. Male dogs are ready to go most of the time, and they can lose control of themselves when they encounter a female dog in heat. They are much more likely to make escape attempts and put themselves in danger while tracking a female in heat. Potent male dog hormones also mean that male dogs can be more likely to do things such as mark their territory, hump people, other animals, furniture, and the air, and display alpha male behavior. Controlling these behaviors is about training, though, and goldies are highly trainable. If you are planning on having your dog spayed or neutered, gender matters even less. While it does not completely remove hormone-related behaviors from dogs, the procedure does diminish them and make them much more controllable. Behavior Some experienced goldie owners claim they can see differences in the personality and behavior of male and female golden retrievers, but the evidence is circumstantial, and there always seems to be someone out there with an opposite experience. Nevertheless, it is worth considering. Some people believe that female golden retrievers tend to be easier to train. This is often linked with the fact that female goldies reach maturity sooner, so they are just a bit more pliable during those important training months. Whether this makes a difference in the long term is unclear. Others suggest that male goldies tend to be more loyal, or clingier, and are more eager to spend time with their people; however, there is no suggestion that female goldens are aloof. The breed in general is very loving and enjoys spending as much time with their family as possible. While some statistics suggest that male dogs are six times more likely to bite than female ones, research suggests that this is less about nature and more about nurture. Humans have a tendency to anthropomorphize their dogs treat them like humans , and therefore encourage and expect different behaviors. Because of this, pet parents are more likely to accept aggressive behavior in male dogs as normal and less likely to train it out. Health When you research golden retrievers, you will see that they are vulnerable to a range of health issues , as is common for purebred dogs. This includes hip and elbow dysplasia, retinal cataracts, epilepsy, and cancer. This does not mean that there is a high chance that your dog will suffer from any of these ailments, but they are things that your dog should be screened for. Female golden retrievers have a few more possible health issues than males. This includes an increased risk of hip dysplasia for unspayed dogs and an increased likelihood to develop ocular myasthenia and adrenocortical insufficiency, but breeders do their best to control for these factors. Golden retrievers are generally healthy and have a lifespan of years, which is about normal for dogs of their size. One area where gender may make a difference is if you plan on introducing a new golden into a home that already has a dog. Generally speaking, dogs tend to get along better with other dogs when they are of the opposite sex. It is probably linked to balancing hormones and natural competitiveness. If you already have a dog at home, then, you might want to consider getting a golden of the opposite gender as a counterbalance. FAQs Are male or female golden retrievers more affectionate? While anecdotal evidence suggests that male golden retrievers might be a little more affectionate than their female counterparts, generally speaking, goldies are a loving, loyal, and affectionate breed, whether male or female. Are male or female golden retrievers calmer? Female golden retrievers may appear calmer than male dogs because they reach maturity sooner and so pass through the excitable puppy phase a bit faster, but as adult dogs, they tend to have very similar energy levels and levels of playfulness. Should I get a male or female dog? Aside from questions of breeding, gender is not a good indicator of how appropriate a dog will be as a pet. More important factors are breed characteristics, which will dictate size, trainability, and how easy they are to care for in general. Also, if you are adopting an adult dog, their previous lifestyle will be a significant factor. Are male golden retrievers protective? Both male and female golden retrievers are highly protective of their families, but they are also smart enough to know the difference between new people and threatening ones. They are much less likely to get unnecessarily aggressive than some other breeds. Are female dogs less aggressive? In terms of nature, female dogs are not less aggressive than male dogs, but in terms of nurture, they might be. People tend to anthropomorphize their dogs, which leads to different behavior expectations. For this reason, male dogs can learn that a bit more aggression is acceptable. The Verdict It is understandable to assume that male and female golden retrievers might be quite different and that you should carefully consider which gender is right for you, but the reality is that there are fewer significant differences between the sexes than you might imagine. Male golden retrievers are larger, stockier, and have a thicker coat, while the females are smaller, lighter, and finer. Female goldens may also be susceptible to a few more health conditions, but they are still healthy dogs with the same lifespan as their male counterparts. Obviously, their reproductive systems are different which will matter if you are breeding, but it does not make a huge difference to their behavior especially if they have been spayed or neutered. Behaviors such as territory marking can usually be controlled through training. Beyond this, there is no difference between the wonderful personalities of male and female golden retrievers, and they both make excellent family pets. However, most of these are related to personality and overall appearance. Determining which is better will ultimately be your decision, but to help make that choice, here are some explanations of all of the distinguishing traits. Even with the differences, a Golden Retriever of either sex will be a lovable addition to any family. Male vs. Yes, there is, in fact, a real, distinguishable difference between male and female golden retrievers. Visually, behaviorally, and in terms of maturity, there are many differences between the male and female golden retrievers and due to their gender. However, many of these differences can be quite subtle, and overall, both male and female golden retrievers are very loving and make great pets. When it comes to maturity differences, males golden retriever tend to be slower mentally than females. Males tend to be around 10 to 20 pounds heavier than the average female counterpart and approximately 2 to 4 inches taller. Yet, these are not substantial variations, and they can usually only be noticed once the male and female are next to each other. Males also have differences in facial structure. They have a broader nose and head and also tend to be more muscular than females. Golden Males Tend to Have Thicker, Longer Coats In addition to their size and weight difference, male golden retrievers have thicker and longer coats. This is one of the main reasons that male Golden Retrievers are the top pick for show dogs amongst the breed. Males also have longer fur around their neck area, much like a mane. Females do not have this feature, and it is one of the easiest ways to identify the differences in the sexes. Physically, Golden Retriever Males Mature Faster Than Females Physically, male golden retrievers mature faster than females in size, weight, and in their bladders. This is one of the plus sides to the differences, which may sway your opinion, but it is essential to remember that the ease of training is also very dependent on the patience of the person training the dog. However, male golden retrievers still tend to be territorial and to mark frequently, especially while they are young and unneutered. These behaviors will lessen indoors with potty training but generally do not disappear completely unless they are neutered. Once they are properly potty trained, the markings will only occur outside when your dog encounters new and unfamiliar scents. If you get them fixed at an appropriately young age, they will usually lessen the leg lifting and urinate as females do by squatting. Golden Retrievers are rarely aggressive, but it is more likely, a male golden will be aggressive rather than a female. This is because they are inherently more protective and territorial around their owners. Aggression in dogs comes from inadequate training or traumatic experiences, so it is not expected in dogs that have a loving family from puppyhood to adulthood. Male Golden Retrievers Crave More Attention Due to their evolutionary pack mentality, male Golden Retrievers are constantly showing their owners affection and loyalty. They see their owner as their pack leader and in a survivalist setting a Golden would shower the leader with love and attention to win their favor and protection. Male golden retrievers are very needy and need constant affirmation and affection from their owners. They can even become depressed or get anxious if they do not receive enough attention from their owners. Females tend to be calmer in temperament and more independent when it comes to relationships with their owners. They are also generally more patient with commands and easier to train because they mentally mature faster than males. While both require attention, the females are slightly less high maintenance. This means they will welcome your affection and seek it out when they want it, but they will also do their own thing if they have had their fill of attention. This does not diminish their snuggly qualities, as female Golden Retrievers still want your love and affection. They are just more content cuddling on the couch than following you for constant belly rubs. Females tend to be around 10 to 20 pounds lighter and about 2 to 4 inches shorter. They also have slightly thinner coats and lack the additional neck hair or mane that males have. When it comes to shedding, their coat may be thinner, but if the female is not spayed, she will shed twice as much as the male while she is in heat. They will shed roughly the same amount if the female is spayed. Golden Retriever Females are Easier to Train and Tend to be Smarter Intelligence is a trait highly prevalent in Golden Retrievers , and this shows much faster in females. They are very intelligent at a young age, and while the males are easier to potty train, females do much better in obedience training. They have a longer attention span and pick up on directives quickly, which means they can learn many things in one session. This trait would also be beneficial as a service dog, which is actually why Golden Retrievers are a popular breed of choice for service animals. Mentally, Golden Females Mature Faster Goldens have a long puppyhood compared to some other breeds, and this usually means they are energetic at a higher level for a more extended period of time. Females of the breed mature faster mentally, which means they tend to calm down more quickly than males. This is a plus for anyone who may prefer more occasional movie nights or games of fetch in the yard rather than extensive hikes and jogs. Due to their mental maturity, female golden retrievers are seen as more independent and confident in themselves. This means that, unlike males, the females will be less likely to follow you around and pine for your constant attention. They are also unlikely to become distressed due to a lack of affection from their owners. Females also seem to require less physical touch than males. Males will want you to pet them for as long as possible, while females will enjoy it but will leave when they feel satisfied. That answer is up to you! It depends on the nuances of your own lifestyle and personality. Golden Retrievers, as a whole, will need attention and a yard to let out their abundant energy, but some of these differences will fade away as the dogs leave puppyhood. Females are less clingy, calmer, and do better in obedience trials. Males require a lot of attention, maintain their playful energy for longer, and are easier to potty train early on. Related Posts:.
