We recently got a KC registered lab puppy at the end of September, I can vouch that there are plenty of responsible breeders out there that are not charging ridiculous lockdown inflation prices. Agree completely with 5labs reply, those are the same reasons for which we would only ever get KC registered pups. We started our research and contacting breeders at the end of June and had a puppy by end of September. To note this can take much longer depending on waiting list availability and we got super lucky through breeder word of mouth. Regarding Kennel Club website - yes the website transfer was shambles, and paperwork has a backlog. That shouldn't be an excuse not to register a litter. If you wish to follow the KC route, here are my tips that I've learnt from chatting with responsible breeders and my own research: 1 Please do NOT buy from pets4homes. You can see the adverts that have poorly written English and make up garbage health tests. I read one along lines of: "this is the most health tested dog in the country" Also found many ask for large non refundable deposits. Even if they are valid ads, the prices always seem to be extortionate. I avoided for peace of mind. Dogs only need to be health tested to be on the website I. I think this covers 3 months. Again watch out for those charging extortionate prices and don't be afraid to ask prices from breeders who don't advertise them. The effort needs to come from you - breeders are being contacted in the s and won't have time to get in touch with you to make initial contact, be proactive. We searched by local counties but quickly had to widen the distance to most of England includes Ireland, Scotland and Wales too as countries. By breeder, we cross-checked current parents and previous litters back to KC website health tests. If they don't exist on KC website, I suggest you ask the breeder for copies of tests up front. We ruled out all non KC registered from the beginning and saved time. We wrote a "mini CV" as an initial introduction message and sent it to select breeders that we thought were great. This just contained basic info such as our names, location, contact details, job details, hours and lifestyle. Easier for a busy breeder to reply to someone who already helps them halfway. Be patient and considerate, I usually gave most breeders a week or two to get back and then followed up. If no reply then I crossed them off. If you do find a puppy, ensure to cross yourselves off any lists you're on I went back and rang so they don't have to chase me when they have litters next year. Be super patient, be kind and good luck! Nervous puppies or adult dogs Not all Labrador breeders will be equal, and in fact some will be far, far better than others. Breeding Labradors is a big responsibility, and anyone taking it on should be well equipped to bring up the healthiest, best tempered pups possible. Because good breeders go to great lengths to ensure that their puppies have healthy genes and a great start in life. Dog Breeders To Avoid There are some amazing Labrador breeders out there, but there are some pretty terrible ones too. A bad Labrador breeder might appear above board in a number of ways, but fall down on one or more of the above points. I highly recommend that you read this list before you visit, and again afterwards. I have on several occasions walked away from bad breeders based on gut instinct alone, only to realise what was bothering me when I reflected upon the situation at home later. Although this was very upsetting at the time, I am incredibly thankful now that I did walk away and take the time to find the right breeder for my new puppy. Signs Of A Bad Dog Breeder A bad dog breeder is not necessarily a bad person, a puppy farmer or lacking in good intensions. It can be tricky to spot a bad Labrador breeder, especially when you are excited about getting a new puppy and reluctant to wait. But finding the right breeder will set you off on a journey of joy with your new friend, and help you get away from some horrible avoidable problems. If you spot any of the following signs of a bad dog breeder, then you may want to consider politely moving on to the next on your list. They should show an interest in who you are, your experience with dogs and Labradors in particular. They should want to be reassured that you are going to be the best possible person to look after one of their puppies. A lack of interest in anything beyond whether you are able to pay is a bad sign. When they say they are unable to scan them in to the computer, then you may have to trust that they will be on site when you visit. They will either be worked, compete in agility, obedience or be shown in the ring. They should be a loved and valued member of the family, or sporting team. No dog should be kept for her breeding value alone. Some very good breeders will have a couple of litters a year from, but in general multiple sets of puppies should set alarm bells ringing. Good breeders will never sell their puppies to pet stores, they want to meet the potential owners. The Breeder Has Many Dogs Of Different Breeds Some good breeders will have dogs of different breeders, but they will always fall within a set and understandable category. Dog breeders to avoid are those with various breeds that have no relation to each other in terms of sporting interests. If your breeder has various female dogs from different breed categories, you need to ask yourself why. A bad breeder will not simply tell you that you cannot see her, they will concoct a viable lie. On rare occasions these excuses may be true, but as a buyer you simply cannot run the risk that the breeder is actually a puppy farmer who has never even met the mother, or that the mother has been kept away due to problems with poor health or aggression. The Puppies Are Unclean Dog breeders to avoid will often have mucky puppies. All puppies will get messy occasionally, but a puppy living in urine or faeces will smell strongly and look dirty. This is a sign that the breeder either does not understand puppies at all, or that they are negligent in their care. Either way, they are not the breeder for you. If your breeder is keeping the litter in a confined space where they cannot stretch their legs, if the puppies are cold or if they live in darkness, then the breeder is not taking proper care of them. The pups will be less likely to grow up to be well socialised, healthy and confident dogs. If they ask to meet you in a public place, then walk away as they have something to hide. Again they will give you excuses that could be believable, but it is simply not worth the risk of endorsing a puppy farm, which is the most likely reason for avoiding you visiting their premises. If you visit the puppies and they are living in a barren space, with no soft bedding, then this is a sign of a bad breeder who does not understand or does not care about their need for interaction, play and comfort. A good breeder knows how much food their puppies need. Underweight puppies could be suffering from an illness or simply not being given enough food. Overweight puppies are unhealthy too. They are more likely to suffer from joint problems and rapid growth, and a good breeder would be aware of this fact and not put the puppies in the position of becoming over weight. A bad breeder will avoid questions about the stud dog, what his purpose is and where he lives. You should have the option of going to visit the stud dog as well, if you choose to do so. This is a sign that the dog is lacking in training and in bond with the breeder, who may only be using her for her ability to produce puppies and not giving her a fulfilling active life. Vet care is a vital part of dog ownership, and a breeder should have a good relationship with their local veterinarian. They may well give you excuses such as, the mother is fed up with them or they are weaned, but these are not relevant factors. Puppies need their mothers and littermates for much more than feeding. The Breeder Encourages You To Take Two Puppies A good breeder understands that most people are not equipped or prepared to take on the responsibility of two Labrador puppies at once. A bad Labrador breeder who simply wants to make money and sell puppies will encourage you to bring home two dogs, because it is financially easier for them to make a double sale. You want a Labrador breeder who understands what makes the Labrador breed so great, and wants to reflect this in their puppies. Unusual dogs are of course interesting, but they might be lacking in the qualities that you are looking for. Health and temperament should be the primary considerations when making your decision. The mother of the puppies should be clearly bonded to her owner. She should want to be near her, listen when she is spoken to and seem relaxed and happy in her company. If she is not then she either is has either been lacking in attention and training, or she does not have the typical Labrador personality that you want to be passed on to her offspring. If they are not, then you have no way of telling whether this is true. Understanding their exercise, dietary, training and care requirements extensively. If the breeder seems unsure of any aspect of Labrador care or life with Labradors, then they may not be sufficiently knowledgable to produce healthy happy puppies and home them accordingly. A reluctance to do so suggests that they are keeping a disappointing element hidden, or that they are not interested in their puppies once they are homed. When you sit down amongst them they should pile into your lap, tug your clothes and lick your hands. If the puppies seem shy or reserved they may be unwell, or not have been properly socialised. The Breeder Lacks Knowledge Of The Dogs In The Pedigree A good breeder choses her dogs carefully, picks matings based on a wealth of knowledge of the breed and knows other dogs relevant to her own. They should be able to pick several names out of the pedigree and give you some background on the dogs that they relate to, and what you can expect in terms of temperament and breeding. Coefficient of Inbreeding or COI is a measure of how related a pair of dogs are. A bad breeder will mate two dogs with similar pedigrees, without having an interest for the impact this will have on future generations of the breed and their health. Labradors have lovely personalities in general, so there is no excuse for breeding from a nervous or grumpy dog. So it is in your interests to happy, friendly Labrador parents. A breeder who only remarks upon the convenience of the stud dog, is not taking the time to make the right decision for the puppies. A bad breeder is not interested in who homes her puppies, just that they hand over the cash and take them off her hands. If when you speak to the breeder they let you know that puppies will be sold on a first come first served basis, this is a real warning sign that all is not as it should be. Even a busy kennels who use their Labradors for working, will often have a couple of old dogs resting by the hearth in the house. A bad breeder will sell every single dog who either does not produce enough puppies or is past her prime, and will never keep a dog on for sentimental reasons. It enables you to see that they are all a similar size, and in great health. Dog breeders to avoid will hide the remainder of the litter if there is a problem with any of them, or if one or more of the puppies is displaying concerning signs. Allowing you to seeing the conditions that they are being raised in. A bad breeder could keep the puppies living conditions a secret for any number of reasons, including poor facilities or because there are numerous other litters in the same area also for sale. They should be happy for you to see everywhere that the puppy has been kept, and to make your own judgement on the conditions. A bad Labrador breeder, who says that they dogs are owned by another party who is unavailable at the moment, is one to be regarded with nothing but suspicion. Good breeders want to meet and get to know all of their potential puppy parents, and will not miss out on this opportunity by employing an agent to make the sale. They will have another role in their life, whether that is in a related field such as dog training or some other area of work. If the breeder clearly makes their living through puppies alone, then they are unlikely to be able to give the care and attention that raising each litter requires nor make sound decisions about the homes they send their puppies to. A bad breeder will only feed them the bare minimum quantity and quality required to keep them looking fit for sale. Ask the breeder what the puppies are fed on and why. It should be a good quality food, appropriate for Labradors and for puppies. Bad breeders will use the cheapest option and may given inappropriate food such as adult kibble to young dogs. Any downgrading of the importance of socialisation to a growing puppy is a real warning sign of a lack of canine knowledge. The Breeder Does Not Offer After Care A good breeder will let you know that you can contact them with any questions, and that they will be happy to take the puppy back at any point in their lifetime if your circumstances change. They should encourage you to get in touch if you have any worries. A bad breeder will see the exchanging of money and homing of the puppy as the end of your relationship. They will invite you to email them photos or friend them on Facebook.

They will want to be with you. Have a crate or bed next to your bed for at least the first few weeks while you get them into a Puppy night-time routine. Here is how to get a puppy to sleep through the night. Alone Training Teaching your Pug puppy that they can be totally fine being left alone can be done with stuffed chew toys, time and patience. Pugs generally stay close, but they can be very friendly and want to run up to people and other dogs for a bit of a cuddle, so a good recall will always help. But they can enjoy fetch games on a smaller scale, get on the floor and interact and play with your Pug puppy to learn what they enjoy. This will help to avoid resource guarding. Husbandry Tasks Pugs love affection but should be handled with care. Be mindful to not treat them like toys. Not going to blame children to think they are toys though — the resemblance is uncanny. To do this we want to teach them that hands will do nice things to them so use plenty of treats when handling your puppy. Week 2 — Training your Pug puppy Week 2 already! House Training a Pug Overview One of the most important things that you will ever teach your Pug is house training. And, while it can be a bit challenging and you'll have to devote quite some time to this, if you follow these guidelines you are sure to find success. These tips will be applicable for both young puppies and adults of any age that need to re-learn the rules. The main goal will be to train your Pug that one certain area outside is the bathroom area. And, that when you are not home to take your Pug there, pee pads are used for bathroom needs. While the exact time needed for potty training varies depending on how often you are there to actually teach the lessons, expect for this to take about 3 months for your Pug to be fully trained. Also, plan for there to be little setbacks here and there as your Pug learns these important lessons. Above all else, do not give up. The Pug is a breed that aims to please. With proper prepping and patient guidance, your Pug can be a very well-trained dog. Step 1: Prepping No doubt, you want to get right into housebreaking your Pug; however, prepping is a vitally important step and is needed to ensure your Pug is set up for success. Certainly, while you are setting things up, bring your Pug outside as needed details ahead. And, once you have everything in place, you'll find that house training is easy and accidents are few and far in between. Those that do happen will be nicely contained. Choose a designated bathroom area. Your Pug should not just go to the bathroom somewhere outside. Pick on certain area that will be used. This should be away from family foot traffic like outdoor barbecue areas and easy to reach no matter what the weather. Choose a containment method. If your Pug is allowed to roam the house or even just an entire room like the living room or family room this will inevitably lead to puddles of pee and piles of poo all over the place. So, the goal is to keep your Pug in one spot any time that you cannot closely supervise. This means when you are busy cooking dinner, taking a nap, etc. The goal should also be that the area is very comfortable, with everything a Pug needs to be content: Quality bed, lots of fun toys, and food and water bowls. One of the best methods to create this sort of contained area is via an indoor canine playpen. These are square or circular heavy-duty plastic open-topped pens. Some have doors and these are recommended. This is 24 inches 61 cm high and offers 8 square feet of space perfect for a Pug puppy. It has a nice little door to easily get your Pug in and out, and the door can be left open when you're home and watching your pup and closed when you're away. What's nice about this is that as your Pug grows, you can add on panels to increase its size. And, it comes in 7 different colors, to blend in nicely with your home decor. This is a bit taller at 34 inches 86 cm and it's circular in shape, offering 21 square feet. Though it's roomier, it will still keep housebreaking accidents contained and serve the purpose of keeping your Pug in a comfortable spot while you work on training. No matter which option you choose to create this sort of defined area, it should be lined with pee pads. While a puppy will not automatically know that the pads should be used, they will be used by default. If you find that that your Pug doesn't use the pee pads , urine and feces end up near them instead of on them, or they are moved or chewed on, this can be addressed by using larger ones, using a method to keep them in place, or using alternatives like reusable pads or even real grass patches. Have a supervision method. Since your Pug will be in a contained area see previous point 2 any time that you cannot closely oversee your pup, it's now time to choose a method of effective supervision when you are there to do so. The goal will be to have your Pug close enough that you'll be able to interrupt any attempts to pee or poo in the house. It's important that you don't just assume you'll somehow do this. Puppies dart around quickly and Pugs of any age can move around a corner and leave you a nice little present in the blink of an eye. You'll want to avoid accidents like this since each one is a step in the wrong direction and a missed opportunity to instill house training lessons. One of the best ways to keep your Pug right near your side is the tethering method. Your Pug will be on leash and harness and you will have the other end connected to you. Please note that a harness must be used, not a collar. Brachycephalic breeds like the Pug should never be on leash and collar no matter what; it can constrict the trachea and cause breathing problems. Next, under point 4, you'll see details of what you'll need to tether your Pug while house training. Have two leashes and at least one harness. As mentioned above, you'll want a leash and harness combo for when you are supervising your Pug. You will also need these items for when you take your Pug outside for bathroom needs. There are several types of accessories that will be used for these purposes: 1. A comfortable, properly fitting harness. This is for any time your Pug is on leash indoor tethering to you or being taken outside. Unlike collars that put strain on the neck and trachea and is a big no-no for brachycephalic breeds, a harness distributes pressure over the much stronger back, shoulders, and chest. This is super easy to place on you just slip your Pug's front paws through the leg holes and then there is an adjustable buckle and Velcro on the back to secure it. There is an o-ring right between the shoulder blades to connect the leash. This is padded for comfort and the material is a breathable air-mesh. It also comes in 13 different colors, so your Pug always looks stylish. A short soft-handled leash. This is the type of leash you'll want to use when you are with your Pug indoors and supervising him during house training. You'll want the leash to be short about 6 feet to keep your Pug close. And, the soft handle will allow you to either slip it over your wrist or secure it through a belt loop, which allows both of your hands to be free. A retractable leash. For when you take your Pug out to the designated bathroom area, it can be useful to have a retractable leash. And, these are great for taking walks as well. Being able to adjust the length at any time is a huge plus and helps you stay in control of your Pug. It can extend out to 16 feet and even comes with a lifetime guarantee. Have effective training treats. A big part of housebreaking is being able to let a puppy or dog know that they did something right by going to the bathroom in the designated area. This teaches them what is expected and offers motivation for doing that action again. Praise works to some degree; however, the fastest method is to combine praise with reward in the form of a training treat. There are a few elements to keep in mind: The treat should be something reserved for reward not given as a snack at any rate , small so it doesn't interfere with appetite , moist which is often more appreciated over dry , and packed with flavor. You'll also want it to be up to the standards of any food that your give your Pug, meaning made in the USA, no chemical preservatives, no artificial additives, and no fillers like corn or soy. Choose the cue words. Dogs always learn best when they can connect a word or phrase to an action. So, when you are potty training your Pug puppy, you will want to use one certain phrase each time you head outside for bathroom needs. You'll also use this phrase again to mark the moment that the deed was done and when you give reward details ahead. Common choices are 'do the deed', 'pitty-potty', 'bathroom', 'potty time', and 'get busy'. Choose whichever phase you like, but make sure that it's one you don't mind saying out loud in front of other people. Arm yourself with an enzyme cleanser. It's important to clean any accidents the right way. Urine and stools contain certain enzymes that soap and water do not remove. If these enzymes remain, they will produce a lingering odor. You may not smell anything, but your Pug with exceptional canine senses will indeed pick up the scent. It is a strong motivator to go to the bathroom in that area again. To prevent this from happening, clean any accidents with soap and warm water, blot it dry, and then spray the area with a cleanser like Simple Solution Enzyme Formula , allow it to stay there for 5 minutes, and then blot the area dry one last time. To summarize your housebreaking prep: You have a method of keeping your Pug in one area like a playpen that is lined with pee pads for any time that you are not closely monitoring things, you have a supervision method for when you are watching your pup, a designated bathroom area has been chosen, you have training treats to hand out for reward, you have a leash and harness for your Pug, you've chosen cue words, and you have an enzyme cleanser to deal with any accidents in the house. You're now ready to fully house train your Pug. Step 2: Taking Your Pug Out for Bathroom Needs You will want to take your Pug to the designated area: Right after your puppy or dog wakes up About 20 minutes after a meal Every so-many hours, depending on age. This is typically every 2 hours for a 2-month old, every 3 hours for a 3-month old, etc. Before each walk allowing a dog to pee and poo along the walking route is a missed opportunity to teach house training rules Before bed Any time that you are supervising your Pug and there is a motion to pee or poo Right when you get home if you've been away As you can imagine, you'll be quite busy bringing your puppy outside many times each day. Fortunately, as a puppy matures, the bladder and bowel muscles become stronger and there is a gradual ability to hold bathroom needs for a longer duration. Still, an adult Pug will need to be brought out 4 to 6 times per day. The exact steps are as follows: 1. Quickly bring your Pug to the exit door. If you must, carry him or her. It's okay if some urine dribbles; as long as your pup finishes urinating outside, consider it a 'win'. As you are heading out, grab the training treats. Also be saying the cue words out loud. Example: 'Let's go do the deed, do you have to go do the deed? Bring your Pug to the designated area and stand in the center of it. With your Pug on leash and harness, allow them to sniff around and choose the perfect spot. Plan to be patient. Some dogs can take up to 15 minutes, particularly if there's a need for a bowel movement. If your Pug pees, but you think he may need go number two, remain in the area. As the deed is being done, offer praise, 'Good dog, you're doing the deed! The very moment that your Pug is done, offer both praise and reward, 'Good dog, you did the deed, good dog! Both of you need to work as a team. If you find that things are not going as planned, re-read the rules and see how closely you are following them. Ahead, we'll touch on some commonly seen house training issues and how to deal with them. Going to the bathroom right after coming back in the house: A very common complaint by owners is that their Pug is peeing in the house soon after being brought back into the home. It can seem as if a pup is doing this on purpose, as if the dog is mocking the training system. But the answer is far more logical than that. In most cases this is because the owner did not have the patience to wait outside while the puppy chose the perfect spot and the body relaxed enough for urination or the muscles had time to push out a bowel movement. After the body relaxed or the bowel muscled readied, the pup was brought back in and of course, went to the bathroom where he or she was at the time: in the house. Stay outside for at least 15 minutes while your Pug is learning his or her housebreaking rules. This can seem like a very long time while standing there and waiting for a dog to go to the bathroom. For this reason, it can help to set up an outside chair, bring a book or take the time to check emails and messages. Barking at night - Is it a bathroom need or a call for attention? One of the hardest elements - but one that you will soon conquer - is to learn your Pug's signals that there is a bathroom need. One of the most challenging times to figure this out is at night when you are awakened by barking. If you are unsure, it's always best to bring your dog outside. However, it will be important to make it very clear that this is a serious time. No playing, no talking and right back to bed afterward. If you are quite certain that barking is due to attention seeking behavior and not for housebreaking reasons, as long as you are sure your Pug is safe and comfortable, all yelps and whines should be ignored. Constant bathroom needs: Puppies may need to pee every couple of hours and adult Pugs depending on how much they drink and often often they eat may need to head out 6 or more times per day. If you feel that your Pug needs to urinate much more then normal, this can point to a health issue with bladder infection and UTI being the most common. So, it's always best to check with the veterinarian. Correcting vs punishment: Pugs are very sensitive and do not react well to being yelled at. For housebreaking, that sort of reaction to accidents will not get you anywhere. Pugs tend to have their feelings hurt if not disciplined the right way and therefore rubbing a dog's nose in poop or getting upset will not be beneficial to actually teaching what is expected. Pugs are also small dogs, which means they have tiny bladders. Sid had an incredibly hard time learning to hold it. Pugs also have a stubborn streak. Ultimately, training a pug requires patience and consistency. Basic Obedience Training for Your Pugs Basic obedience is teaching your pug puppy common commands like sit, stay, come, leave it. Pugs are incredibly food motivated, so always make sure to have snacks on hand. Teach Your Pug to Sit Teaching your pug to sit will give them good manners early on and also teach them self control. Hold up a tasty treat to get their attention. Hold your hand above their head, out of their reach—but close enough to smell. Hold the treat up higher than their head. Teach Your Pug to Stay Teaching your pug to stay helps them learn self-control. They must listen since sometimes your pug can get ahead of themselves. If not, start the process over. Increase your distance, taking steps further away every time you command them to stay. Teach Your Pug to Come When you guide your pug to come to you, you can call them in for several reasons. Use their favorite treat for motivation. Repeat this until they recognize the word without the treat. Eventually, you can stop offering a treat when you say the command, and you can call them to you without it. Use their favorite treat in one hand and a less desirable snack in the other. For example, you can use a tasty piece of dehydrated or plainly cooked meat and something less appealing—like an apple slice. Have your puppy sit down in front of you and direct your attention toward them, so they keep focus. Let them smell the less desirable snack first. If your pug listens to your command—praise and reward them by offering up the tastiest treat. It requires a lot of patience from you and a routine you have to follow to a fault. You should begin potty training as soon as you get your puppy to get used to the process. Before you begin, you have to remember that these puppies have never learned where to use the bathroom, so this is entirely new to them. Designate an Area for Potty Time Having one area only that they use the bathroom will quickly help them identify where to go. Make this a small area away from any spot they romp or play to spot the difference. Take them outside after playtime, meals, and sleep. Taking them outside to use the bathroom every hour will get them into a routine. Designate 5 to 10 minutes every trip out to wait for them to go. Every time your buddy does their business, vocalize approval to them and show them affection by petting and offering treats. Leave the Potty Area Immediately After Once they use the bathroom in their spot, take them back inside right away. Doing so will further instill the idea that this is a place to potty—and nothing else. You can set a timer if that helps you remember. Take them back out when the timer goes off—or if you see them sniffing around the house for a place to go. Repeat the steps. Teaching them to be in a crate helps when you have to leave the house or at bedtime. Pugs who stay in the crate between potty time are much less likely to go in the house. If you get an appropriately sized crate, it will work wonders for different life stages. Many crates have dividers where you can separate the space, limiting the amount of room they have. That means you can buy a small crate with a divider that you can use as they grow up. You want your pug to be in an area that is big enough to comfortably fit their body without giving them too much wiggle room. If the crate is too big, they may think they can doo-doo in the corner without consequence. Your puppy needs to be safe, comfortable, secure, and at home in their crate. The more they acclimate themselves, the sooner they will adjust. Leave the crate open and let your pug sniff the cage or climb in and out. Use a word that you feel comfortable with and that your pug can recognize. Spend roughly five to ten minutes getting your pug used to the crate. Let your pug inspect the inside. You can encourage them to get inside by offering their favorite toys or snacks. Once you feel that they have gotten used to the new object, try to close the door. You can offer a treat through the cage bars to show approval. Stay with your pug for a few minutes with the door shut. You can pet them through the cage, continuing to use your association word. If your puppy starts to act nervous or fidgety, open the crate to let them out. Give them a break for several minutes and then attempt to repeat the process. Each time you put them inside, you can shut the door a bit longer. Once your pug gets used to the process, you can leave them alone in a room for a few minutes at a time. Each puppy will progress differently. Place the crate in your room or near you at night while you sleep, so they feel at ease Put their favorite blanket or a nice, comfy bed in their crate for ultimate comfort Drape a blanket over the crate to create a safe atmosphere Put a toy or two in the crate if they need something to chew on Reward your pup by giving them a treat when they enter or exit the crate Overnight Crating When your puppy is ready to sleep in their crate overnight, you should always make sure they are ready to avoid accidents. It could be that they need to go outside and they are trying to tell you. It may just be for attention. If you know they just went to the bathroom, try not to give in to their pleas. If they know they can get their way by making a fuss, this can develop into bad behavior. So, the best thing to do with attention cries is to ignore them no matter how hard it might be. We used a harness for him since pugs are brachycephalic dogs. That means they have flattened muzzles, which can cause breathing problems. Attaching a leash to a collar is dangerous—and can even be deadly—for this breed. Always, always, always use a harness for leash training! Leash training is so important when you own a dog. Once they are mannerly on a leash, you can take them virtually anywhere without them trying to pull or veer off in other directions. You can start very early—as soon as you bring them home. The earlier you introduce them to a leash, the more second nature it will become. Initially, it may feel awkward for them, but no worries—they will adjust soon enough. Your pug may bite at the leash or try to squirm away from it at first. Have patience. I promise it gets easier. Let them use their sniffer. First, place the harness on the ground for them to check out. Touch the harness to their body to gauge a reaction. Put the harness on them. This part may be a bit of a struggle since they may wonder what the heck is going on. You can reassure them with a toy or treat. Repeat the process with the sniffing introduction. Once they check it out, you can attach it to the D-ring of the harness. Again, if your puppy is biting at the leash or trying to back out of it which is totally normal , reassure them with a treat or toy. Stand up and walk backward, calling your puppy to come toward you. Reward them with another treat to show that you approve. The more you walk them with a leash, the better they will do. The more you use the leash and the more experiences they have, the better behaved they will be. If you start as soon as you get your pug, they will accept it as a natural part of their daily life. We started Sid right away at only eight weeks old. Training before six months of age is the best way to get fast results. Ultimately, the earlier, the better. A good age to start with training is roughly nine weeks—only a week after you bring them home. Forming early habits will help them become acclimated before they have a chance to form poor behaviors. Last Thoughts on Pug Training Every pug is different and will learn at their own pace. The calmer and more consistent you stay, the faster they will learn the routine. You asked super valuable questions and really listened to our concerns. You helped us to make a conscious choice about what is right for us and take the steps to determine that we were doing the right thing. We are planning a teddy bear Bernedoodle litter with Harper and Ollie. Harper is expected to be due January 29th with puppies going home in March. All of her puppies will be traditional tricolors and parti tricolors. These teddy bear Bernedoodles will be pounds. They are a cross between a f1 Bernedoodle and a f1b Bernedoodle. We decided to call them teddy bears because the name fits them. We decided we wanted to add the Teddy Bear bernedoodles to our program back in .I talked with Tammie at Rocky Mountain Bernedoodles. We decided it was a good idea and we would be able to get the perfect Bernedoodle. I am excited about the potential for the Teddy Bear Bernedoodles. My idea is that we can produce a litter of puppies with consistent structure, hair type, temperament, and color. The way we can do this is to take the best of the best in health, structure, and temperament and test them to make sure they do not catty IC. Ic stands for improper coat. It is the coat you would see on a Bernese Mountain dog or a Golden retriever. We have had many requests for this coat type but as of right now we are not producing the IC affected coats in our Teddy Bear Bernedoodle program. All of our Teddy Bear Bernedoodles will have the beautiful fleece non shedding coat. Our Teddy Bear Bernedoodles will be pounds full grown. We will introduce the larger Teddy Bears in .We love the medium sized because they are great for all living situations. Teddy Bear Bernedoodles are great for families with allergies because they are little to no shed. Our teddy bear Bernedoodles are calm, quiet, social, intelligent, affectionate, and goofy. Our Teddy Bear Bernedoodles make great family companions and can double as a therapy or service dog. They need to be a part of a family and do best around people. You will find that your Teddy Bear is eager to please. This can be used to your advantage and use positive reinforcement training. You would be surprised how much your Doodle is willing to do for a little praise. If you find that your Doodle gets bored of training quickly, try doing smaller sessions. If you break up training into minute intervals with playtime in between, you will find that they are more receptive. Your Teddy Bear will love to have training throughout their lifetime. It gives them time to shine and show off their skills. All Teddy Bear Bernedoodles will have a curly coat no matter what their cross is. Now there are F2 Bernedoodles two F1 crossed that do not have the signature curly coat. Breeders typically will not sell these wavy-haired Doodles as a Teddy Bear since they are not curly. These F2 Bernedoodles shed more than the Teddy Bear and exist because of how unpredictable multiple generations can be. So be sure to talk with your breeder about what you are wanting before making deposits on a puppy. It is very rare to get an F2B with wavy hair since they are more Poodle than an F2 cross. Since they are more Poodle, they are low shedding and considered hypoallergenic. If you notice that your Teddy Bear is shedding, it is crucial to look at all environmental factors. They will shed due to allergies, not being brushed, or needing a bath. You will need to invest in a variety of brushes and combs for when the inevitable tangle happens. Your Teddy Bear Bernedoodle will need combing every day to get rid of knots. You will also need to brush them with a slicker brush that reaches down to the skin. Doing all of this daily will prevent painful mats that pull at their delicate skin. Your Teddy Bear will also need to be seen by a groomer every weeks. This grooming is when your pooch gets pampered with a bath, nail trim, and hair cut. These appointments keep them feeling fresh and well looked after. It can also be vital to their health. So you will want to get started on this as young as possible. These are no different than a first-generation Bernedoodle. The only difference is that you will not see as much shedding when grooming a Teddy Bear. Miniature Teddy Bears are inches tall and pounds. These mini Teddys can live anywhere from years. A standard grows to inches tall and pounds. The average lifespan on a standard is only years since most larger breeds do not live as long. These sizes and life expectancies are about the same as a first-generation Bernedoodle. Currently, the mini and standard are the only two recognized sizes by most breeders. There are a few breeders that sell smaller sizes like a micro or toy Teddy Bear, but these are unpredictable. But if you ever have questions about the size of your puppy, talk to your breeder directly. They can show you pictures of past litters and the parents to give you a better idea of size. All breeds are subject to certain medical conditions, and knowing them could help raise awareness. If you know what to expect from a breed, you can carefully analyze DNA testing and health certificates. You can also keep an eye on warning signs with your vet to prevent any severe damage from occurring. Multigenerational Doodles are known to be more prone to disease.
