However, he has been doing great with building up confidence recently and may be able to have walking buddies with other dogs of a calm and friendly nature. Basil adores the company of his favourite friends but can be a little apprehensive when first getting to know someone. His potential adopters will need to visit the Shoreham centre several times to build a bond with him and he may need to visit his new home on occasion too. He adores the company of his people pals and is a friendly chap to all whom he meets but likes to build up a bond in his own time. Asking him to show off his tricks is a great way to initiate his friendship, especially as he knows that a tasty treat might be on offer. Being a senior chap, he would best be suited to a home with older children, who can be gentle around him. Rufus will need to be the only dog in the household but has previously lived with a rabbit and a cat, so possibly do so again, pending gradual introductions. Dogs Trust said Rufus entered the charity's care through no fault of his own and has shown himself to be a wonderful boy who is full of love and character. He enjoys nothing more than spending time with his humans and receiving all their affection and attention, but is also happy to be left alone for short periods of time once he is fully settled into his new routine. She has a lot of love to offer, though she can be shy at times and will best be suited to a home where the youngest members of her family are in their older teens. While Pooky is worried around bigger dogs of a boisterous nature, she is friendly with other dogs who are equally as calm as she is. She can live with a well-matched dog in her new home, but cannot live with cats or small animals. Pooky is an avid sunbather and would love to continue to soak up some Vitamin D in a garden of her own. Nervous in the presence of new people, Tex arrived into the charity's care after showing aggression towards strangers. However, with careful management and when providing him with a predictable routine, he is a sweet and loving boy who will make for a brilliant companion. Tex must be the only pet at home and can be worried around unfamiliar dogs. He is also required to wear his muzzle when in public and when visiting the vets as a precaution. A secure garden of his own is essential. Much more a fan of her people pals, Tula finds it overwhelming in the presence of other animals and must be the only pet at home. She will need to go for walks in quieter areas, and needs to wear her lead, anti-slip harness and muzzle when out and about. She's a fantastic traveller in the car, which is a great advantage if needing to drive her to rural locations. Tula would best be suited to a home with older, secondary-school aged children who are confident around lively pooches. Because of this, Dogs Trust feels she would best be suited to a home where the youngest members of her family are in their older teens. Sky is also unsure around other dogs and shows her anxiety through reacting vocally. She will need to be the only pet at home and must go for her walks in quieter areas, where she can avoid bumping into them. A garden of her own is essential, so that she can enjoy regular outdoor relaxation time. His new home must be within two hours of the Shoreham rehoming centre so he can have a few trips to his new home before packing his bags for good. For example, Sooty will nudge into your hands when he wants a fuss but likes to do this on his own terms. The endearing six-year-old has a lot of love to give and his perfect match would be with patient adopters, who can take the time to learn his body language, while gradually building up his confidence. As well as spending time with his favourite people, Sooty loves exploring the outdoors and pottering about in exciting new places! The youngest members of Sooty's family must be in their later teens and he cannot live with other dogs, cats or small animals. Despite this, he does enjoy the company of calm-natured canines when out for his walks and may benefit from having a regular walking buddy. He has been at Dogs Trust for two and a half years, and has spent short periods of time in two separate homes. He is full of playful energy, loves to learn, and is a real foodie! Though, despite his fun-loving ways, Lemmy does have a few worries about the world around him. His new family will need to be patient with him, understanding that it could take several months before he is fully settled into his new environment. Until he is settled, he requires his family to be around to keep him company at home. The perfect match for this smart boy would be adopters who are interested in reward-based training and who have plenty of time to dedicate to him. Lenny's favourite place for a scratch is around his neck and he will politely ask for some love by leaning into your legs and beaming up at you. The youngest members of his family should be over the age of .Whilst Lenny may be able to have walking buddies with other dogs of a calm nature, he is most content with his humans by his side and walks in quieter areas would be preferred. Lenny needs to be the only dog at home, where he can soak up all the love to himself and he is also unable to live with cats, house rabbits, guinea pigs or other small furry pets. A garden of his own to roam about and squeak his toys in is essential. The beautiful Borzoi is 'a gentle, elegant lady' who turns heads wherever she goes. Due to her sensitive nature, she would best be suited to a quieter home environment, where the youngest family members are of secondary-school age. She is fearful of dogs, so will need to be walked in less-frequented areas at quieter times of the day, or be taken to hired, enclosed fields and cannot live with any resident dogs. While Zara must be the only pet in the household, she is happy to live nearby horses or livestock. She much prefers having company than spending time alone, so will need adopters who are always around at home to keep her company, and especially in the initial stages while she is settling into her new routine. Adopters who could dedicate plenty of their time to Jack and his ongoing training and providing plenty of fun and enrichment would be a perfect match for him. He must be the only pet, living in a quiet adult-only home, without any visiting children but once settled into his new home, Jack should be comfortable being left for a couple of hours. Jack is a sweet boy who loves nothing more than spending quality time with his favourite people. Sensitive in his nature, Frankie arrived at Dogs Trust because of his medical needs and worries around strangers. The youngest members of his family must be in their older teens, and he will need to be the only pet in his new abode. A garden of his own is essential so that he can regularly enjoy some outdoor relaxation time! While Tilly is still spritely and full of life, she would best be suited to a peaceful home environment, where the youngest members of her family are of secondary-school age. A friendly lady when meeting other dogs, Tilly enjoys having canine walking buddies and could potentially live with a well-suited dog. However, she is unable to share her home with any cats, house rabbits, or guinea pigs. Tilly is a real people-pooch and loves nothing more than relaxing in the company of her favourite friends. She tends to form strong attachments to her humans and will likely become your little shadow, following you about the house. Easily overwhelmed in the presence of other dogs, Scrappy will need to be the only pet at home and is unable to live where there are any neighbouring dogs. A garden of his own is essential so that he can enjoy a good, off-lead run about. Both of these dogs can be friendly but personalities differ, so you never know. The Golden Retriever is known for being friendly, reliable, and intelligent. All dogs need proper socialization and that will be a big factor in how they interact with others. What does this mixed breed look and act like? Is it more like the Golden Retriever or the Sussex Spaniel? Those are the questions we will try and answer below. In fact this guy spent a great deal of his life breeding all kinds of different dogs to get various breeds. He was an avid waterfowl hunter so with the Golden Retriever he was looking for a strong, avid hunter but also a dog that was even-tempered in the home. Through various iterations and the breeding of many different breeds of dog, the Golden Retriever slowly emerged. At that time, they were classified as "Retriever — Yellow or Golden. The AKC officially recognized the breed in .Hence the name. They initially came from an estate called Rosehill. They are a type of gun dog that was bred to have the good barking ability which was not available in most Spaniel breeds at the time. The two main breeders known for cultivating the breed into what they are today are - Moses Woolland and Campbell Newington. They began breeding these dogs in the late nineteenth century. Like many breeds it saw a decline in its numbers after World War One and Two. Supposedly the first ones made their way to the United States in the s. They are a very rare breed and rank out of with the American Kennel Club. They are more popular overseas than in the United States.

Between 8 weeks and 10 months, your puppy has a ton of growing to do, and they change drastically from month to month. Each stage of growth requires specific attention, exercise, and diet, so there is much to learn and pay attention to these different growth stages. There may be behavioral challenges while your pup adjusts to their new life without their mother and siblings. This period of adjustment can sometimes lead to fearful and timid behavior, and your puppy will need as much attention and affection as possible. They should be eating 3—4 small meals a day at this stage. You can begin basic command, leash, and potty training at this point too. Although the schedule is not complete this is a critical period to begin socialization and making sure they are calm and friendly with other dogs, just make sure they are also vaccinated. We highly recommend making training a part of their daily activities at this age. Biting can be an issue at this stage too, as they will begin teething, and they will start exploring and chewing whatever they can find. Chew toys and consistent command reinforcement are both vital for avoiding this behavior. The good news is that your puppy will grow out of this habit at around 6 months old. Your lab should also be house-trained by this point, but there may still be the occasional accident. Remember to be gentle but firm when this happens, and your pooch will likely move through it swiftly. They will begin losing their baby teeth at this point, and biting and chewing may reach its peak. Firm but gentle commands, chew toys, and loads of patience are essential at this stage. Your puppy will be testing the limits and may start showing dominance, ignoring known commands, and asserting more independence. You can now drop their meals down to two meals per day, but be sure that they are not eating too quickly. Your puppy will start to closely resemble an adult at 6 months, but remember that mentally, they are still puppies and will need loads of direction and training. Females may enter their first heat at 6—7 months, so keep a careful watch for stray males. They will still display puppy tendencies and traits and have a ton of excitable energy, but they should be fairly obedient and well-trained by this stage. Be sure to give your Labrador plenty of exercise at this stage to help keep them from misbehavior. They will have reached their full height by now but may still gain weight and muscle mass in the coming months. Unless you intend on breeding, you should consider neutering and spaying your puppy to avoid wandering and unwanted pregnancies. While some breeders recommend that you wait until a year old, this is a perfectly suitable time to perform the procedure. They may still gain weight and muscle mass but much slower than during the past few months. They will still display puppy characteristics and even test boundaries, but all in all, they should be obedient and well-trained by now. They will have a ton of energy and still enjoy playtimes and loads of exercise. While they are at their full height at this age, some Labs may appear lanky and still have weight to fill out in the coming months. When Do Labradors Stop Growing? All dogs are unique, and the question of when they stop growing is largely dependent on the individual. Anecdotally, your Lab should have reached their full weight by 18 months and full height by 9—12 months. Most breeders agree that your Lab will stop growing at some point during their second year. Even so, any weight gain during their second year will be minimal, and they will have done the majority of their growth by their first birthday. Mentally, they are out of the puppyhood phase of testing boundaries and disobedience by their first year— if correctly trained. If you have been consistent in training thus far, your Lab should be friendly, obedient, and well-behaved from their first birthday and into adulthood. In males, neutering can sometimes result in a calmer, more relaxed dog, and this, in turn, will slow down his need for exercise and may result in weight gain. A study in showed that dogs neutered before 37 weeks may gain more weight, while dogs that had the procedure after 37 weeks had a slower growth trajectory. The difference was minimal, though, and there is no reason to assume that these procedures have much of an effect on growth rates in dogs. Dangers of Growing Too Quickly or Stunted Growth While some puppies may grow quicker or slower than the agreed-upon average, this is usually nothing to be concerned about due to the individual and unique nature of dogs. However, if your pooch is gaining weight rapidly or not gaining enough, there may be deeper issues to look into. If your dog is from working or hunting stock, they may be smaller than average Labs and are usually lighter for work in the field. Size may also be genetic, and if your Lab comes from small parents, they will be smaller than average. The same may be true of heavier-than-average Labs—if their parents are large, they will likely be similar in size. However, larger-than-average weights may also be due to overfeeding or a lack of exercise , or a combination of both, so be sure to keep their exercise and feeding habits consistent. English Labradors tend to be stockier and more muscular than their American counterparts and have a thick, waterproof coat , while American Labs have a slender build with a slightly finer coat. English Labs are slightly shorter, topping out at around 22 inches, but their stocky and muscular build often makes them heavier than American Labs. In fact, English Labs have been known to weigh up to 20 pounds more than American Labs without being considered overweight. American Labs are known to be slightly more active and energetic than English Labs, while English Labs tend to be less excitable and more laid back. English Labs are by no means lazy, though, and they still have plenty of energy and stamina to go around. But you can still both suffer from burnout and frustration if you try to reach the later puppy training stages without totally aceing the earlier developments. Your Puppy Training Schedule This may not be exactly the same for each puppy, especially with retrieving which is more Labrador specific. However, it gives you a rough idea. Constantly changing direction. Stopping frequently for cuddles and rewards. This means I blow the recall whistle whenever the puppy runs towards me, no compulsion, and no whistle unless the recall is already underway. Socialisation: Lots almost daily of outings to different places rural and urban carried Visits to family and friends. Bite inhibition: Discourage hard biting, allow mouthing. Working with food: Learning how to take food gently without snatching or grabbing at the treat pot. I still give the puppy lots of encouragement by running away as soon as I blow the whistle. Socialisation: More socialisation, at least twice a week to busy public places. Bite inhibition: Discourage hard biting, allow gentle mouthing. Retrieving: Encourage chase and pick up retrieve drive. Hand touch: I teach all new puppies to touch my hand with their noses. This is a great foundation for other skills. Recall: Puppy recall continues, reduce my run to a walk, avoid any distractions. Still frequently blow the recall whenever the pup runs towards me of her own free will. Socialisation: From ground level after vaccination. No other leash walking at all Bite inhibition: No biting, gentle mouthing allowed. Retrieving: Continue to build drive. Positions: I introduce three positions — sit, stand, down. What to expect from your 3 month old puppy Most three month old puppies will be sleeping through the night. And will be having less potty training accidents in the house. There are a few potty training problems that arise at this age, and they are all covered in 15 potty training problems solved. Biting is a big shock and a big problem for many new Lab puppy parents so do check out our complete guide to biting , and join the forum for help and support. Help encourage your puppy to stay in their bed while you are eating. I have a pot of dog treats on our kitchen table, and whenever we sit down to a meal, the puppy gets a treat each time she steps into her basket. Just a treat for stepping in there. What to expect from your 4 month old puppy Your 4 month old puppy will be pretty much potty trained, but accidents still happen if they are left alone too long. Biting is usually starting to subside now, and many four month old puppies will be able to mouth at your hand without hurting you. At this point I start to discourage all mouthing. I teach every puppy to let me touch her face or approach her with my hand, food, a leash etc while holding eye contact and not grabbing at me, or at what is in my hand. This is the age at which people often start to push forward with training. Your 4 month old puppy is capable of quite a lot. There is nothing wrong with teaching your puppy different cues and even some tricks. I recommend you still avoid long duration activities at this point as they are a common stumbling point with puppies young enough to have a short attention span. A ten second sit is ample. Add mild distractions Recall: Fade additional cues. Begin to whistle the pup and stand still. Add mild distractions. Clicker train to polish this in more mouthy puppies. No commands are needed for this. Gradual introduction of distractions. Advanced puppy training begins in earnest This is where I start a programme of sporting training with my Labs. You can begin raising your standards and expectations, asking for longer and more complex behaviors. Teaching your puppy to walk to heel nicely for longer distance and past all kinds of distractions and temptations. Or teaching your puppy to sit and stay for longer periods of time, and even while you go out of sight or while other dogs play nearby. What to expect from your six month old puppy Six months is a common time for people to have a lot of questions and to be struggling with a few challenges. This is now a very bouncy, quite powerful and rapidly maturing young dog. And you may need to patch up a few holes in his training or manners. Some Phantom Bernedoodles are born looking pure black. If you look under the tail and they have brown markings that is a good indicator that the puppy will eventually have phantom markings. How can I get a phantom Bernedoodle What is a phantom bernedoodle? Phantom coloring is a dog that has one main color, and then has 'tips' of another color. If you can picture the coloring of a Rottweiler, or a Doberman, this is the same color scheme. Phantom can occur with any color, A Silver Phantom with White points, A Chocolate phantom with Cream points, A black phantom with tan points, etc etc phantom Bernedoodles have a base coat of black or brown with brown on all four legs, chest, checks, and eyebrows. Some of the dogs in pictures are technically a phantom tricolor but to give you an idea of what a phantom bernedoodle looks like I think it is appropriate to share the pictures. A true phantom bernedoodle is only black and brown. When a bernedoodle has Black, rust, and minimal white we call that a phantom tricolor. Of course, a Bernedoodle puppy will inherit its traits and characteristics from its lineage. The traditional Bernese Mountain Dog coat features a solid jet black base color with white and rust or tan markings. The tan and rust markings are usually present above the eyes, on the cheeks, on each side of the chest, on the legs, and under the tail. The white markings are found on the muzzle, between the eyes, on the chest, neck, and paws. Bernese Mountain Dog Poodle Colors Poodles, on the other hand, most commonly come in a variety of solid colors, such as black, blue, gray, silver, brown, red, apricot, cream, cafe au lait, silver beige, and white. In addition to that, Poodles can also come with different color combinations like black and brown, black and tan, black and apricot, black and cream, brown and apricot, brown and white, and other combinations of the more common solid colors. The merle coat gene is not as common in either Poodles or Bernese Mountain Dogs, but it can be passed onto the Bernedoodles when one of the parents is carrying the merle gene. There can be various tri-color patterns with colors like black, brown, tan, rust, apricot, red, white, and cream. Additionally, keep in mind that not all puppies in the same litter inherit the same coat colors. As with any Doodle, combining two different breeds gives us endless possibilities. Like many other Doodles, Bernedoodles often carry the fading gene , which is usually inherited from the Poodle side of their lineage. This typically occurs anywhere from 6 to 10 months of age. The fading, also called clearing, is most noticeable in darker colored Bernedoodles who have blacks and browns in their coat. I have done a lot of study of the merle gene in the poodle gene pool and believe that it was not caused by introducing another breed into the gene pool but, in fact, it is a mutation that occurred naturally. Merle is probably the most mis-understood and hotly debated dilution gene in the poodle. Many believe it must be a recessive gene because it doesn't affect the appearance of red, apricot and red or diluted colors such as blues and silvers. In addition, it can be hard to see or not evident at all on black and brown dogs cryptic. Not only is its appearance illusive to breeders but it has confused scientists and it is still not completely understood. The merle pattern has been studied many times and the last study released in emphatically stated that merle was caused by a mutation in the gene called SILV or PMEL.The research was believed to be so solid that tests were offered to breeders to identify Merle in their dogs. However, as of March the company who owned the patent for the test, Idexx, stopped offering tests as they discovered the scientists identified the wrong gene. SILV is not responsible for merle. The gene they decided was merle SILV actually turned out to be for a form of piebaldism- not merle. One theory is that piebaldism may be issue when connected to merle- or it may be piebaldism itself that is the issue. Another theory is "The Misidentification Theory. However, it is said - rightly so - that merles have often been misidentified as other colors. Then there is the "The Cryptic Merle" theory. This theory is actually a subcategory of the Misidentification Theory. Merle is what is called a "modifier. If merle acts on a black coat, the result is blue merle. If it acts on a chocolate coat, the result is red merle. And so on. The final theory I have is that that merles have been in the breed and that mere is a "natural" occuring pattern in the breed, and that merles have often been misidentified as other colors. When I called AKC to register Chuck and asked about the color code to give him they said to give him code and This refers to a a red and white dog with black markings. This leads me to believe that when looking at the color pedigree 5 or 10 generations back you would not know if the dog was actually a merle or a parti meaning merle could be in the pedigree without proper identification. Merle can affect all coat colors. The merle forms of brown and black are usually called "red" though this is not correct; red and merle are genetically different and "blue" as patches of blue are formed throughout the coat. Merle is a dilution gene just like the blue, chocolate in a traditional color but without the color of blue DNA. Merle has its own colours and DNA; a blue merle is a dog who has blue patches on its body, red and some are chocolate or "cookies and cream". Dogs who are recessive red can still be affected by merle, but the patches are either hardly seen or, if the dog is a clear recessive red, are not visible at all. Combinations such as brindle merle exist, but are rare. In addition to altering base coat color, merle also modifies eye color and coloring on the nose and paw pads. The merle gene modifies the dark pigment in the eyes, occasionally changing dark eyes to blue, or part of the eye to be colored blue. Since merle causes random modifications, however, both dark-eyed, blue-eyed, and odd-colored eyes are possible. Color on paw pads and nose may be mottled pink and black. What are the most common Merle patterns in Bernedoodles? How is a Merle Bernedoodle produced? Merle is a term used to describe the pattern of a dogs coat. Merle is a dilution gene, that is, it lightens whatever the coat color would otherwise have been. The lightening is not spread evenly over the coat, but leaves patches of undiluted color scattered over the dog's body. Also, the lightening seems to work primarily on the black pigment in the coat. Merle refers to the pattern in the coat and is not a color as such. The white and gray patterns that appear on a black make them appear to have a blueish cast. These are called blue merles. Merle is a color combination in dogs' coats. Although most breeds that can have merle coats also typically have white markings such as around the neck, under the belly, and so on , and often tan points typically between the white and the darker parts of the coat , these are separate colors from the merle; some dogs do appear completely merled with no white or tan markings. Merle can also alter other colors and patterns besides the usual red or black. Utah Bernedoodles. Sherry Rupke is widely credited for breeding the first Mini Bernedoodles in when the Ontario-based Swissridge Kennel breeder intentionally bred two of her Bernedoodles. Mini Bernedoodle Appearance Mini Bernedoodles can come in a wide variety of different colors. Their appearance mirrors that of their Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parents. They resemble a cuddly, hair small bear cub. These shaggy dogs can have the broad build of the Bernese Mountain Dog or the slender build of the Poodle. Every Mini Bernedoodle has a different coat but there does tend to be some common themes. In terms of size, Mini Bernedoodles can range from 18 to 22 inches tall and weigh between 25 and 45 pounds. However, you can get some members of the cross breed who are a little taller, smaller, heavier or lighter than these ranges. After all, they tend to be happy, goofy, loving and loyal dogs who relish the chance to interact with their fellow family members. Their energy levels can vary depending on whether they take after their Poodle parent or Bernese Mountain Dog parent. This is both a blessing and a curse, but does require persistence when training them because they can regress in training quickly if you do not maintain consistency. Rasa highlighted that every Mini Bernedoodle is going to differ slightly, but they usually have some traits in common. Every [Mini] Bernedoodle is a little bit different. In my experience, though, [Mini] Bernedoodles are total velcro dogs and often a product of their environment — so whatever training you do and routines you establish will help your [Mini] Bernedoodle in developing their personality. For instance, a Mini Bernedoodle who is more alike the Miniature Poodle will have quite high energy levels but a Mini Bernedoodle who is more akin to a Bernese Mountain Dog could be more relaxed. She plays with neighbors dog about 30min every day. High energy. Rasa highlighted the importance of mental stimulation when taking care of a Mini Bernedoodle. Treat puzzles and snuffle mats are truly life changing and will often exhaust your puppy more than any physical exercise you can give, but [Mini] Bernedoodles love being social and active so you should definitely incorporate both. Booker gets at least two walks a day as well as some playtime with other dogs. His favorite form of exercise is play time with other dogs so we try to set up play dates once a week with other dogs in our neighborhood — either by going to our local dog park or playing in the backyard. Be warned, however, that sometimes bernedoodles will try to outsmart you to get treats without a task! Mehnoosh believes Mini Bernedoodles do benefit from consistent and regular training. Having said that, each member of the cross breed could shed to varying degrees, from virtually no shedding to moderate shedding. Mehnoosh provided a brilliant explanation of why Mini Bernedoodles tend to be low shedders. However, the shedding is minimal and is reduced when you breed Bernedoodles with other Bernedoodles. In my experience, not at all but you do have to keep up with grooming religiously. While most [Mini] Bernedoodles have the non-shedding Poodle coat, without daily brushing and regular professional grooming it can get quite matted. SwissRidge Bernedoodles founder Rupke wrote on her website that Bernedoodles and Mini Bernedoodles are completely dedicated to their families with a special fondness for children. In general, [Mini] Bernedoodles love being part of a family unit, inclusive of humans, dogs, cats, whatever! Mehnoosh recommended early socialisation for Mini Bernedoodles to help develop their social skills. Mini Bernedoodles are very affectionate and friendly dogs, particularly to other pets within the household! Separation anxiety is a chronic canine condition that occurs when dog owners are about to leave the home or have left the home. The symptoms include barking, howling, whining, chewing, digging, urinating and defecating. But yes they want to be with you alllllll the time. Mini Bernedoodles are absolutely velcro dogs and would rather be with their people than without, so to an extent, yes. However, if you do your best to make sure they are well exercised physically and mentally, this should not be a problem. If you leave them comfortable, they should be able to stay comfortable! However, Mehnoosh revealed that Booker does suffer with separation anxiety. This is a tough question, as i can only speak to my experience with Mini Bernedoodles. But i know that to be true with many different breeds that were also adopted or purchased during the pandemic. Are Mini Bernedoodle Fussy Eaters? However, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a breed that can have sensitive to certain types of food. Mehnoosh admitted that Booker is a voracious eater. Absolutely not — Mini Bernedoodles are hungry all the time and will eat just about anything if you were to allow them! Booker eats a diet that is inclusive of kibble and freeze fried food. One thing to be mindful of though is that poodle breeds often have allergies with chicken so we like to avoid including any chicken within his diet. However, as a relatively new hybrid dog, your best bet may be a breeder. You should be prepared to answer questions about your lifestyle and home as well as ask the breeder lots of questions. You should ask to see your potential pup with their mother as well as ask the breeder for proof of health screening and veterinarian checks.
