Apollo the GSD—"He is very clever and energetic. He weighs 85 pounds and his height is 26 inches. Black and Tan This is the color most of us think of when we picture a German Shepherd dog. With a rich tan undercarriage and a black face and back, this color of GSD has been around since the very first was officially registered back in Germany at the end of the 19th century. Although Horand von Grafrath was a little darker than the modern black and tan GSD, the ancestry is evident. With their luxurious white coats, these pale dogs look more like Golden Retrievers with erect ears. Despite their popularity, like the white German Shepherd, the blue has been a cause of controversion in the Shepherd world because recessive dilution gene comes with inbreeding practices and health issues. Blue German Shepherds may appear gray or even silver and are sometimes mistaken for a Blue Belgian Malinois. Isabella This unusual coat color variation is another washout as far the AKC is concerned, which is a shame given how striking it is. It originates from genetically combining liver and blue dilution genes. Like the liver and blue German Shepherd dogs, Isabella GSDs often have unusual eye coloring and different colored noses. Liver German Shepherds will usually have a brown nose. Blue German Shepherds have a blue nose. There is no evidence that the Isabella coloration makes the dog more susceptible to health issues. However, Isabella is a recessive trait. Selecting for recessive traits always limits the gene pool and makes dogs more susceptible to genetic conditions. Grey Not to be confused with the silver, black, or blue German Shepherds, the gray variety look more wolf-like with their dark coats. Some breeders specialize in producing dogs of this unusual color. Silver Similar to the gray German Shepherd, silver is nevertheless recognized as a distinct color. Often grouped together, however, the gray and silver colors are produced by the same genes. Finding a breeder that specializes in silver German Shepherds is a lot easier than finding one that focuses on the grey, so this might be your best bet if you want a more exotic-looking companion. Silver is an uncommon color for GSDs, possibly because it is a recessive gene. Similar to the dilution gene, this gene influences black pigment. While you also get silver sable German Shepherds, the patterned coats mean they are categorized as sable rather than silver. However, silver German Shepherds are often seen in military work or the police force. The red color is the result of the color gene pheomelanin. It can have any shade of red, ranging from strawberry blonde to a deep mahogany red. Alongside black and tan, the black and red combination is preferred over others by German Shepherd breeders. As black and red are both produced by dominant genes, this color combination is easier to breed for, and many breeders focus on producing purebred dogs with deep red coloring. Sable A classic color for the German Shepherd, a sable comes in a variety of colors but each hair sports a black tip. Sable GSDs can be black, gray, red, silver, or tan and are also known as agouti. Agouti is a type of coloring also present in other dogs, like the Agouti Husky. In this coloring each hair has several bands of brown and black, leading to a typical wolf-like coloration. Some founding members of the German Shepherd breed believed this should be the only color present in German Shepherds. Black sables are born as all-black pups and tri-colored sables are born as black and tan puppies. As the puppy ages, their coloring changes. Some GSDs may take as long as three years to develop their final sable coloration. As every sable GSD is different, with the color and pattern both varying, it makes for an eye-catching and unique dog. Sable is a dominant color that is easy to breed for. If you breed a Sable German Shepherd to any other color, you will likely get sable puppies. Black and Silver Much like the black and tan GSD, a black and silver German Shepherd usually has a silver saddle across its back, although the pattern and hue both vary from dog to dog. Like the silver GSD, the black and silver coloration occurs only when the recessive intensity suppression gene is present. This color is not common in the AKC show ring and can mostly be found in working dog lines. Because these dogs are not visible in the dark, it is highly advisable to only walk them on a light-up dog collar in the evenings and at night. Bicolor Bicolor German Shepherds appear almost completely black and, to fit the breed standard, must have black heads, back, legs and tail. Even if their paws are brown, the heels need to be black by the color standard definition. However, the AKC accepts bicolor as a recessive color in the breed. Though technically allowed in the show ring, these dogs are mostly found in working lines. Black and Cream The last official color on our list, the black and cream GSD remains true to its origins as a lighter version of the common red and tan coloring. There is some controversy surrounding the black and cream variation. Most AKC breeders do not want them to participate in the show ring. They strive to breed darker dogs that do not show the light cream coloring. The color does little to change their character, however, and black and cream GSDs excel obedience, nosework, rally and agility and are as loyal and brave as their black and tan cousins. Her DNA proved them wrong, although the Panda coloration remains unrecognized by some kennel clubs and breeders. The Panda GDS is created by a rare genetic mutation. The genes responsible for an all-white body and the patchy white are two different ones. This does not stop them from being popular however! There is a large demand for Panda-colored German Shepherds. Unfortunately, this inflates the price and leads breeders to focus on the color mutation rather than genetic health, so be sure to only source a puppy from a reputable breeder. Albino An albino German Shepherd is incredibly rare. An albino of any species or breed lacks any pigmentation, including of the skin, hair, and eyes as well as the blood vessels, resulting in a pinkish tinge. You can distinguish an albino German Shepherd from a white one by checking his eyes and nose. A White GDS will have some pigmentation resulting in brown eyes, whereas albinos always have red or pink eyes. An Albino GSD, should one exist, may experience other health problems associated with the condition. They may, for example, be photosensitive, requiring protection from direct sunlight. What is the Rarest Color of the German Shepherd? The rarest color of German Shepherd is the isabella due to the recessive combination of liver and blue. An hour later, the puppy has been running around the house, chugged a bunch of water, pees in the house again, and it starts all over… So how do we stop this cycle from happening? Step 1: Take Them Outside Often Some people recommend taking your puppy outside every 20 minutes, while others recommend every hour. The point is, take your puppy outside often before they need to go. Puppies can hold their bladder for about an hour per their age in months, so a two-month-old puppy can hold it for about two hours, a three-month-old puppy can hold it for about three hours, and so on. But now that playtime is over they suddenly remember they have to pee and this nice carpet looks like the perfect spot! You can use this to your advantage by taking them to the same spot every time. To stop this, you need to clean up accidents with an enzymatic cleaner , not regular soap and water. One issue that many people make we made it, too is praising them too loud and too soon, and interrupting them. Then grab them and bring them outside to their spot and if they finish going, praise them like normal for going outside. So if you do all of the steps above, how long should it take for your puppy to be potty trained? All puppies are different, but it can take two weeks to a few months for your golden retriever puppy to be potty trained. So, one puppy at 12 weeks of age may go every hour, whereas another puppy at the same age goes every two. Up to 6 months of age, the maximum time a puppy should go before being allowed to relieve itself is four hours. After 6 months of age, a puppy might be able to hold it for 6 hours, but again that is dependent on many factors, and the individual dog and pee breaks should be no more than four hours. A good rule of thumb is that after six months of age make sure your dog can go out for a potty break every 4-hours, no matter how long they can hold their bladders. Golden Retriever puppies pee a lot. The younger the pee, the more it will pee. In general, expect Golden Retriever puppies up to three months old to pee 10 to 15 times per day. After three months, they may only pee four to eight times per day. However, the peeing frequency can be impacted by age, size, activity, diet, hydration, stress, and medical issues. Age Age is the most significant determinant of peeing frequency for puppies. This is because when they are very young, their bladders are small, and they do not have the physical ability to hold their pee. Moreover, at this age, they have not had any formal house training, so they have not yet learned how to hold it. So, when the urge strikes, they go. They do not care if it is on your carpet, bed, or floor. In the wild, when an animal needs to go, it goes. Puppies must learn not to pee in the home and wait until outside. Fortunately, Golden Retrievers are smart and learn fast. So, as their bladders grow, if they are given a reasonable opportunity to go outside when the urge strikes, they will quickly learn to hold it. Size Size is the next important factor. The bigger your puppy, the bigger its bladder. As a result, you will typically find a larger puppy has better bladder control. Not always, but usually. For example, at eight weeks of age, my Golden Retriever only went once during the night, and by week 10 could hold it until morning and never cried. However, he was a huge puppy for his age. Activity You may notice that during and after exercise, your puppy has to pee more. This increased peeing from exercise is perfectly normal. The most obvious reason for increased pee frequency is increased fluid intake. To replenish the lost water due to panting and keep themselves cool, they drink more water. Additionally, during activity, blood flow to the kidneys is decreased and diverted to the muscles. After rest, normal blood flow returns to the kidneys, and urine output is increased. High amounts of activity are normal for a Golden Retriever puppy. In fact, they can often border on crazy , because of their insane activity levels. So, be diligent because they will often stop suddenly to go pee during these times. BAR often would need to pee during exercise and play Diet What a puppy eats can impact its need to urinate. For example, diets rich in moisture-rich foods can increase fluid intake and result in more urination. For example, giving your puppy some wet or raw dog food or adding some water to its kibble increases fluid intake. Or, your puppy may be getting more moisture-rich foods in snacks. For example, cucumbers, apples, and other moisture-rich foods can increase hydration levels and peeing frequency. In contrast, if your puppy eats dry kibble and snacks, such as the freeze-dried liver, it may pee less. Regardless of the diet, always ensure your puppy has lots of fresh water. Hydration The more your puppy drinks, the more it will pee. As mentioned previously, both diet and activity levels can impact hydration levels. However, weather can also impact the amount of water consumed. For example, puppies need more water on hot summer days to cool themselves adequately, including indoors if there is no air conditioning in the home. In the winter, drier weather can also cause a puppy to drink more. Ensure your puppy is not left outside too long on summer days, and always make sure there is an adequate water supply both inside and out. Stress Stress can be in the form of fear, anxiety, or even excitement. These intense emotions can both increase or decrease urination. This form of peeing is called excitement urination, and it can happen when a puppy is excited. It is normal for puppies, and most puppies outgrow this over time. Puppies can also urinate when you are leaving due to separation anxiety. In addition, puppies may urinate from the emotional distress and fear of you leaving and them being alone. Puppies may also urinate from harsh punishments such as yelling or physical reprimands, and this stems from fear. Often submission urination in puppies or dogs is due to being fearful or highly anxious. Please keep training positive and rewarding. It will save you from behavioral problems down the road. Medical Issues While medical issues in puppies are thankfully rare, they can occur and may impact urination. A UTI is caused by bacteria. While your puppy may need to pee more frequently, very little comes out, and it may leak, strain to pee, or pee in the house. Again, most puppies are healthy and medical issues causing urination problems are mostly rare. It is important to remember that puppies under 3 months of age typically have limited bladder control and reflexes and need to be house-trained. In other words, they pee a lot, so expect accidents — a lot of them, especially early on. However, call your veterinarian if you feel your puppy is peeing more or less than usual. Often, they can determine over the phone if your puppy needs to come in for an exam. Recognizing these patterns will help you in your potty training because you can be proactive in getting your dog out quickly when it needs to do its business. Typical times when your Golden Retriever puppy will need to go out to pee include: When waking up: either in the morning or after a nap After meals Within an hour after drinking water During or after play Before bed These are the most common times your puppy will need to go pee. But, for a good reason, the first on that list is after sleeping, especially in the morning. When getting up in the morning, take your puppy out first thing. Not after a cup of coffee or your shower, but before you do anything else. Consider that your puppy has a small bladder, and if it has held it most of the night, it has to relieve itself. So if you have to go, it has to go worse. Other typical times include after meals and after drinking water. Be on the watch as puppies often go potty within 30 to 60 minutes after eating or drinking. We set BAR up for success. Taking him outside after sleeping and meals meant we could reward him easily for going potty outside This is an excellent time to keep your puppy in sight. The same applies during play. You might see your puppy suddenly stop, sneak away, and start sniffing, circling, or squatting. Then, quickly but calmly , pick the puppy up and take it outside. In this way, a puppy is tethered to you, and you are more able to catch accidents before they happen. And always take the puppy out before bed. This is a good habit to instill earlier. Allowing the dog to relieve itself before bed ensures the bladder is emptied before sleep. Golden Retrievers puppies also poop a lot. They are also eager to please and learn. So, potty training should happen quickly if you are positive, aware, and consistent. There are many great resources on how to teach your Golden Retriever puppy to go outside. Still, there are a few rules you should always follow to make it as easy as possible. In addition, to the common times noted above, ensure that you: Keep a consistent schedule; this pertains to trips outside, feeding, and exercise. Patterns are built around consistency. Provide regular exercise outside — outside exercise gives opportunities for the puppy to pee outside and for you to reward quickly for that behavior. Signs or patterns of when your puppy will need to go will become clear if you observe and supervise. Use a house line to keep the puppy visible and within reach. They can sneak away like little Golden puppy ninjas. Keep rewards with you always. One of the biggest mistakes people make when training a puppy is missed opportunities. Ensure that if your puppy does something you want, you always have treats on hand to reward behaviors you want. The puppy must learn potty time is for peeing and pooing. Inappropriate urination is a common issue in dogs that should be addressed as soon as possible. The first step is to figure out why your dog is peeing in the house. If your dog is peeing in the house, it could be because your dog is simply still training, aging, or showing signs of a more serious urinary tract infection. Below, we break down why your dog could be displaying inappropriate urinary behavior. Often called "inappropriate urination" by vets, peeing in the house is a relatively common problem in dogs, but it's usually addressed during puppyhood. If your dog is a puppy, then house training might not be complete yet. House training can take a while, and you might need to review the steps as you go. If your dog is definitely house trained and the inappropriate peeing started well after house training was complete, then there are other potential reasons for the behavior. It's essential to first rule out health problems before you investigate behavioral causes for inappropriate urination. If your house-trained dog starts peeing in the house again, there are several potential causes for it. Urinary Tract Issues If your dog suddenly starts peeing in the house or other unacceptable places , it could be caused by a urinary tract infection. This is one of the most common reasons for inappropriate urination and one of the most frequently seen health problems in dogs. Before you get upset with your dog, go see your vet for an exam and consultation. Your vet will most likely want a urine sample from your dog in order to perform a urinalysis and possibly a urine culture. This test is done to look for bacteria and abnormal cells in the urine. Incontinence Urinary incontinence is often associated with senior dogs , but it's possible for a dog to develop incontinence as a young adult. If your dog is leaking or dribbling sporadically or leaving urine puddles in the bed or on the floor during naps, incontinence may be the culprit. If your dog is incontinent, it's important to know is that your dog doesn't realize it's happening and has no control over it. Fortunately, incontinence can sometimes be treated with medication. On the other hand, if your dog consciously pees large quantities in inappropriate areas, it's probably not incontinence. Talk to your vet to learn more. Health Problems Certain health problems may lead to urinary issues, such as kidney disease , diabetes , and Cushing's disease. Your dog could be experiencing an injury, joint issues, or arthritis , making it painful for them to get up to go outside for potty breaks. Your vet may recommend additional diagnostic testing to rule out one or more diseases depending on your dog's other symptoms if any. Treatment will depend on the diagnosis. Aging Dogs Puppies may still have accidents when they're being house trained, but old age can bring on other causes of urinary accidents. Forms of dementia or senility can occur in aging dogs, leading to house soiling. These dogs may forget their house training or simply forget where they are. Other health issues, such as kidney failure, tend to crop up in old age as well. This is another reason to get your veterinarian involved early and often. In some cases, dementia can be somewhat managed with medications and supplements. Many people living with senior dogs that have urinary issues also choose to use doggie diapers or line the dog's bedding and other frequented areas with absorbent pads. Some dogs, especially males, display marking behaviors. Marking is often driven by sex hormones, but it can become a habit and continue even after being altered. Your dog might be exhibiting submissive or excitement urination. This may happen if your dog is intimidated by someone or something. It's common for some dogs to pee when someone is standing over them and looking down, especially if the dog is young or fearful. Dogs may also pee when anxious and stressed out. Examine the situation in your home to determine if something in the environment could trigger this type of behavior in your dog. Have you recently added a new pet to the household? Has there been a human addition to the family, like a new baby? Has someone in the household recently left or passed away? Dogs are often very sensitive to these types of environmental changes. In the meantime, be patient with your canine companion and try taking one or more simple steps to help the dog with its problem. Re-train your dog: Because your dog was probably once house trained , it can be helpful to revisit the training and repeat the steps. Increase potty breaks: Take your dog outside to pee right after drinking, eating, and waking from naps. Reward your dog for peeing outside in the appropriate places. Identify the trigger: Try to figure out if there's a trigger or stimulus in your dog's environment that prompts them to pee inside. Eliminate the trigger if possible, teach your dog to live with it, or change any elements you can to calm your dog's anxiety. For example, avoid sources of fear when taking walks, like the neighborhood's barking dog or the area where jackhammering is going on. Play music or use a white noise machine in the house if there are loud noises outside. Don't hit or yell: Avoid punishing or screaming at your dog for urinating in the house. This will likely backfire and instead of learning that urinating in the house is the incorrect behavior, your dog may learn that its people are unpredictable or unsafe to be around. Punishing your dog may make it afraid to urinate in front of you even outdoors , which could lead to more indoor accidents. Clean up properly: Thoroughly clean up each accident as soon as possible with an enzymatic cleaner that eliminates the smell. You don't want your dog to recognize the urine smell and think that indoors is an acceptable place for them to urinate after all. Get professional help: If you've tried everything and are still unable to make any headway with your dog's problem, consider hiring a dog trainer or behaviorist. If you suspect your pet is sick, call your vet immediately. Everyone who sees him stops to tell us what a handsome dog he is. Thank you to Hidden Pond for letting him be ours. We picked her up in early July , and she made our family complete! She is such an amazing dog: sweet, gentle, loving, and playful. It is wonderful to see how much she loves our three young boys. We love how much she loves being outside — especially swimming and playing in the snow. Thank you Dave and your family for bringing her into our lives.
