Finally, before the mother can give birth, breeders must ensure that she and the father are in good health. In Pugs it is common to see brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, and eye conditions. The Pug Dog Club of America recommends that all Pugs are screened for hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and necrotizing meningoencephalitis. Pugs from these breeders are usually more expensive because breeders go to great lengths to breed healthy and high quality dogs. Not only that, but they also tend to give you a dog with all of its vaccines and registration papers. The price of a Pug can really go up when you consider genetic health testing, vet visits, membership documentations and registration fees. No documentation with the sale. No available health care records or genetic testing results of the parents. Breeders that advertise their dogs on websites like Craigslist at a cheaper price. They often breed dogs other than just Pugs. To be a part of these clubs breeders must be certified and approved to have met breeding requirements. As you search for a Pug keep in mind the type of puppy you want. Do you want a specific color? Most often breeders sell fawn or black Pugs. If you want a rare color you are going to have to do some extra searching. What kind of temperament do you want? Pugs are very social. In general they tend to be friendly, affectionate, playful and mischievous. However some may be more timid than others. Will it be healthy? Puppies should have a brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome score of zero. Sometimes you might fall in love with a Pug in a picture but later find out it is missing its health papers. In most cases you should avoid this type of puppy. Reputable breeders should be able to provide you with health papers and registration papers. They will always be clear about the kind of Pug you are buying and their pedigree. They will give you straightforward answers on anything you ask and will show you any paperwork that you ask for. They will also allow you to see the puppy and the mother. Buying from a breeder might not be the cheapest option, but it does ensure you that you are getting a healthy Pug. Cost Of Keeping A Pug Pugs live for between 12 and 15 years so adopting one is a long-term commitment. Out of all the years, the first one will generally be the most expensive. Where does this money go? We will breakdown their typical ownership costs below… Healthcare and Insurance There is no way around it. If you do get a Pug, it is highly recommended that you get insurance. Pugs often have unforeseen medical expenses because they are a brachycephalic breed. You have to be careful when exercising your Pug, especially if you live in hot areas and during the summer months. Overexertion and heat can cause make it harder for them to breathe, and if you do not recognize the signs of heat stress, your dog could end up at the vet ER. It is not a good idea to just give your dog whatever is left over from your last meal. They need high quality kibble that is specifically made for their breed. I would like to see broader staples, but this is still a Wavy Fleece coat because she is a mature adult and there are still no spirals or curls and the coat is draping in wavy staples. As the breed progresses my vision is for the amount of curl or wave in the Fleece coats to become stabilized. On the above left is a perfect Wavy Fleece coat on a four months old puppy. No matter how many times this coat would be clipped it will never revert to a tightly curled coat. Notice the width of the staples which are even and broad. All the above pups were born chocolate. True Red is quite rare. Most puppies who start out being a deep red color will pale out with maturity to either an Apricot or even Golden Cream. When the dog moves her coat flows and ripples with her as she runs. But as they mature and especially after they are clipped short, they grow back just the same as the Wool Coat. Wool coats need to be trimmed or clipped two or three times a year to keep them tidy and to prevent matting. They grow in a circular curl shape after clipping. The difference between the Wool and the Fleece is that the Wavy Fleece coat drapes and flows when the dog moves, whereas the Wool coat keeps its neat shape in movement. Incorrectly bred Wavy Fleece coats can still tend to shed lightly and may or may not be allergy friendly. But if the lines behind the dog are correctly blended the Wavy Fleece coat is as allergy friendly and completely non shedding as the Wool coat. The Borderline coat looked beautiful, but it was basically a more glamorous looking hair coat, so it usually shed and was not always allergy friendly. All except the Wool shed heavily and were not often allergy friendly. As the Fleece coat was developed, two types of Fleece emerged and still exist today, the Curly Fleece and the Wavy Fleece. Appearance can range from an almost straight to a flowing wavy type coat with lots of body. Appearing to contain a sheep lanolin in texture. The ideal wool coat should hang in loose hollow spirals. It is acceptable to exhibit a spring appearance rather than spiral. Coat Colors of The Australian Labradoodle These days you can find the Australian Labradoodle in a number of different and beautiful colors. It is normal that all colors may show bleaching and discoloration over the topcoat, referred to as sunning, this is quite expected and acceptable. The Australian Labradoodle is an active dog and often a service dog that enjoys the outdoors. BLACK This color should be a solid black in color with no sprinkling of any other color through the coat. Nose pigment to be Black. BLUE This color should be a dark to medium smoky blue in color. The blue coat color will develop over time yrs but as a developed adult should have an even coat color. Nose pigment to be Rose in color [matching the coat color]. Nose pigment to be Rose in color. Eye color is many times light in shades of hazel or green. CHALK This color should be a white color but when compared to white is rather a chalky white in color. Nose pigment to be Black or Rose. True chocolates are born almost black in color and maintain the rich dark color throughout their lifetime. Color should be even. When compared to white this color will have a yellow tint or vanilla tone. A true Gold should not have a lighter root than the outer coat and preferable have an even coloration over the entire body. This color may fade as the dog grows older. Nose pigment to be Black in color. Lavender dogs are born chocolate and will develop over time yrs. Parchment dogs are born milk chocolate and will develop over time yrs. From a distance adult dogs can be mistaken for a dark or smoky cream. In the early stages of the breed it was considered a rare color group, however it is is now quite common. The parti gene was introduced through the poodle lines or the Cocker Spaniel lines in the history of the breed. Or a dog that is born dark with golden shading at the roots or a slight brindling effect. Rare color group RED This color should be a solid even rich red in color. A true red should not be lighter at the root than the outer coat. Reds can fade as the dog grows older. Rare color group SILVER This color can range in shades from very light pewter in color to a dark charcoal in color it is preferred to see an even color through the coat but acceptable to see uneven layering of color in the coat. Silvers are born Black with the coat color developing over time yrs. Payments Labrdadoodles require trimming about four times a year. This coat usually requires trimming two to three times a year. All allergy and asthma friendly labradoodles have a coat change from puppy to adult usually between months of age. During their coat change it is recommended that you groom them daily. The coat change can last anywhere from a week to several weeks. This is usually the time when owners decide that their beautiful furry doodle needs a shorter look. Not all Labradoodles are Allergy and Asthma friendly. They have had an extremely high success rate so far! We do recommend that if you have the opportunity to meet one of these wonderful dogs in person that you should check to see if you have any reactions before you make your decision in purchasing your new puppy. We recommend that any family or person who suffers from dog related allergies or asthma should look into a Wool coated Labradoodle as they have the highest success rate. Not all breeders are experienced in selecting coat types so make sure that you find a breeder who not only knows the look but also the correct texture of the coat type you are looking for. Because the breed is still in the development stages we are still are seeing some variations within the three coat types themselves. Also your fleece coats while over all are softer than your wool coats in texture they still have some texture variation within the fleece coat type. The Australian Labradoodle requires varying degrees of grooming depending on their coat type. A light trimming might be required with scissors but usually not. This coat usually requires trimming one-two times a year. The Micro Fine Fleece Supper soft and fine texture in wavy or spiraling coat is an allergy and asthma friendly coat, if kept well groomed. This coat also requires trimming about three-four times a year. The Cotton Wool Super dense curly-straight coat with a softer texture than the original wool or loose wool coats This coat is reminiscent of a giant cotton ball when groomed out and is so dense that it almost keeps it self standing straight up.
