Certainly for my first dog he's 5 now that was the mainstream approach but more recently I'm seeing a lot more advice from behaviourists and trainers to be with your dog until they have the confidence to settle on their own. For some that's having the dog upstairs by the bed, for me this meant sleeping on the sofa close to my most recent puppy now approaching 2 until he was quiet at night. He wasn't very quiet at all as a young dog but I think I still only slept downstairs for a couple of weeks. Don't worry at all that you haven't done this at this point I only mention it as you may reconsider what you choose to do if he's noisy at night in the future. I posted a new thread yesterday "Ted. I made up a bed opposite his crate in our kitchen diner, but before that made sure he's peed and pooed outside, and did some clicker work with him settling in the crate. So far so good. Ancestry Wolves are known to howl to identify each other in the wild and this is a trait that present-day dogs could have kept from their ancestors. Separation Anxiety The cause could be that it has some separation anxiety. This is where it does not like being left alone and it becomes anxious when it is about to be left alone. This would be more likely to be the case if it starts howling at around the same time that you normally leave home. This type of howling will often be accompanied by other things such as destruction, pacing or other signs of distress. Communication Wolves, in the wild, will howl to tell other members of the pack where it is or to scare off other predators that are entering their territories. In the case of your Labrador, the howling could be to alert others of its location such as when it hears sirens. It could also be to warn others not to enter its territory. Environment The reason why your Labrador howls could be that it is in response to something in its environment. If it hears things such as other dogs howling , sirens or other high pitched noises then it will likely cause it to start howling in response. Boredom It could be that the Labrador is howling due to boredom. Labradors were bred to be a very active breed and it takes a lot to properly stimulate them. If your Labrador becomes overly anxious when you leave or at the sight of you preparing to leave then it could be a case of separation anxiety. Other cues could be that it becomes destructive when you are away, it could be depressed or it might pace up and down when it thinks that you could be leaving. Lots of exercise with the dog. Solve Howling Due To Sounds Figuring out whether or not sounds are causing the howling should be a bit easier since your Labrador will begin to howl at the start of the sound and then stop howling when it stops. If it is a frequent sound then getting it to stop could be a bit more tricky. Instead, you should consider a systematic desensitization and counterconditioning program that is designed to solve emotional related issues. Desensitization is where the Labrador is guided to become less sensitive to the sounds and to reduce its physical and emotional response. Solve Howling For Attention It could be the case that your Labrador does it because it knows that it will get more attention from you when it does it. Instead, it would help to give it attention throughout the day by training it, walking it and playing with it. But, it would help to stop rewarding it with attention when it starts howling. The top of the diaper should sit well above their tail and around their waist. You can use baby wipes to clean your dog between changes, ensuring they feel fresh. I like to use buckets instead of bowls for water. Puppies love to dig in their water which makes a mess out of it. Hang the bucket on the outside of the crate by the handle that is on the bucket. Then attach the clip for security by using only one side of the clip to attach the handle to the crate. Leave the other end of the clip just hanging. Never put water inside a crate with a dog. I recommend the 2-quart size for one or two big dogs. This size is also a good size for a puppy. I use two snaps to stabilize the bucket. Though wire crates usually have a divider so that you can size the crate down, we recommend that you go ahead and purchase a 24 inch wire crate along with the correct size for your dog when he is grown. Most puppies can use the 24 inch crates for about 2 months after they are weeks of age. It is also helpful to have a smaller crate when traveling. If you want this option with a Summer Brook puppy, you can have a small icrate shipped to our home address for you to pick up when you get here. The best size crate for adult girls is a 36X24X27 inch wire crate. For an adult boy, use either a 42X28X30 or 36X24X27 inch wire crate. This is a raised cot-like bed that is cool and comfortable. There is a new Kuranda Bed that we have not tried ourselves but it looks amazing. It is a raised cot like the aluminum bed that we have loved for years but it is sized to fit perfectly into a crate! We have purchased both the aluminum as well as the less-expensive PVC Kuranda beds. Our aluminum beds still look brand new but our PVC beds are starting to warp a little after a few years. We like the Ballistic Nylon fabric which has held up for us for several years. The large is the correct size for both boy and girl Goldens. We have two of them and they are as comfortable as many human beds. We have the extra-large size but a large would be plenty big enough for a girl. At first, your puppy will have to be watched almost every minute when they are out of the crate or pen in order to establish good potty habits and also to teach them not to chew. Until you teach them otherwise, some puppies will try to chew everything, including the furniture and even the woodwork on the walls so I have found the pen to be a huge help. If you get a pen, you need to begin training your puppy not to jump on the sides right away. Never pet your puppy or let him out while he is jumping. Reward him for sitting.
