However, the consensus is inconspicuous white markings would not disqualify the dog from conformation. The UK Kennel Club also recognizes the all-white German Shepherd but states they are highly undesirable for conformation. However, they also refer to dogs having white markings. There are many varieties of coat colors in the German Shepherd breed. These are the main ones:. Certain breeds, including dogs with white feet are at risk for being unable to process a number of drugs. Why does this happen? The answer is that it is all about the DNA. This gene like all genes has a function. The MDR1 gene codes or makes a protein called P-glycoprotein. P-glycoprotein is important because it is a drug transport pump. In other words, it plays a major role in distribution, metabolism, and excretion of many drugs. Dogs that have a defective or mutant MDR1 gene have defective P-glycoprotein, and therefore have delayed excretion of certain drugs. This means that drugs can build up in their body's causing toxicity. What breeds are affected, that is who has the mutant MDR1 gene? Classically the herding breeds are affected, with 70 percent of Collies being affected! Other breeds include the German Shepherd, herding breed crosses, and the long haired Whippet. Interestingly, less than 5 percent of Border Collies are affected. There are several commonly used drugs in veterinary medicine that are affected by the mutant MDR1 gene. These drugs include ivermectin, acepromazine, and butorphanol. When these drugs are used in affected patients, the drugs are not excreted and hence build up in the system leading to toxicity. Taking this one step further, these same affected patients can have trouble eliminating chemotherapy drugs. Cancer fighting drugs often are quite potent and would cause serious toxicity in this group of patients. Fortunately there is testing to determine if a patient has the mutant MDR1 gene. In fact this testing should be a prerequisite in any dog with white feet prior to chemotherapy. Conversely certain cancer patients have a surplus of the normal MDR1 gene resulting in a faster clearance of medications. These patients will have drug resistance because the drugs are eliminated too quickly. As we can see genetics is playing a bigger part of understanding appropriate patient care. Gentleman Jim and Ch. Staffy's have an impressive physique. A broad head with dark round eyes, short snout and a wide mouth that gives them a permanently smiling expression. They have a scissor-like bite and rarely drool. A strong neck leads to a square muscular body and they have a powerful tail. These athletic dogs suffer from few health problems although they can be susceptible to skin allergies. They have a lifespan of between years. They are keen to please and one of the easiest breeds to house train. They need to be socialised at an early age as they can be aggressive towards other dogs. Staffys do have some terrier traits they love to dig and left alone outside can easily burrow under a fence. They can also have a strong prey drive like most terriers, so watch out if your hamster escapes. They are being used more often these days as working dogs they have a good sense of smell and make excellent therapy dogs. Contrary to popular belief they don't make good guard dogs they just love people too much. The job they adore the most though, is childminding, playing with and cuddling their extended family. Loyal and fearless a well-trained Staffy loves life and is a happy addition to any home. The Labrador Retriever or Lab as it is commonly referred to, is one of the most popular breeds in the world being ranked number 1 in both the USA and UK in .Highly intelligent, gentle, kind and even-tempered they make fantastic pets as well as working dogs. The English fishermen who settled there in the 16th century used them to retrieve fish that had fallen from the lines or help haul the nets in. Unlike many other dog breeds, with their dense coats and webbed feet they love the water, are excellent swimmers and can tolerate extremely cold water for long periods. Eager to please their retrieving abilities made them a fantastic sporting dog being the "king of retrievers" their mouths are so gentle they don't damage the fowl. In fact, a Labrador can carry an egg in its mouth without breaking it. Gentle and intelligent they also make fantastic assistance and therapy dogs but the job we are most used to seeing them doing is as guide dogs for the blind. Guide Dogs is the world's largest breeder and trainer of working dogs. The majority of dogs being bred now are now Labradors crossed with Golden Retrievers which produce puppies having the best characteristics of both. Labradors love to chew and they don't care what. Shoes, socks, furniture, hands they just love having something in their mouths, which is why it is a good idea to have a box of strong toys handy to give them something appropriate to munch on. They will more than likely be greedy dogs as both Staffy's and Labs have a love of food and depending on which gene is the more dominant these pups will be a variety of colours although solid white won't be as common as it is with purebred Staffys. Here are some of the things you need to know about a Staffy x Labrador Are they easy to train? Without a doubt, yes! Both breeds are intelligent and have an inherent eagerness to please their owners. Even novice owners should quickly and easily be able to train their Lab x Staffy everything needed to become a well-mannered adult. However, it should be noted that both breeds are boisterous, and mouthy when young, things which need addressing sooner rather than later. They can cause a fair bit of damage knocking over both ornaments and people when excited and puppy's teeth are sharp even when playing or not meaning any harm. Both of these dogs are also renowned pullers on the leash The solution to that can be found here so it worthwhile drumming in the "Heel" command early on in training. Does a Labrador cross Staffy need much grooming? All dogs benefit from grooming it gets them used to being handled, improves circulation and is usually a pleasurable bonding session between pet and owner. That said a Staffy cross Labrador coat is likely to be short if slightly thicker than a purebred Staffy so should just need regular brushing. Temperament-Is a Labrador x Staffy good with children? There should be no better playmate for your children than this crossbreed. Neither breed is particularly nervous or highly strung so can cope happily with the noise and rough and tumble of the average family home. We strongly encourage ALL of our puppy buyers to purchase a copy of Puppy Culture so they can follow along with us as we raise their puppy, and so they can continue our hard work, once they bring their puppy home. The half an hour every night it takes to teach puppies to take treats so that you can later reward them effectively. The 3 hours a night it takes to go through the whole litter for their first box game. The 15 minutes per puppy that it takes to teach them that you grabbing their prized possession is the best thing that could ever happen. These are the activities which give them the tools to seek enrichment and interact with their world in a confident manner. This is what makes them brave. We provide special bedding that allows our puppies to have traction while crawling on their tummies. Proper traction in the whelping box is crucial for proper hip and knee development—as research is proving the connection between hip dysplasia and environment factors such as whelping box material. Our puppies are weighed twice daily to ensure they are taking in enough milk and growing properly. We start doing car rides with them do desensitize them to the motion of being in a car. Around week three, we introduce food to them and give them a potty tray in with their bedding. This is because they instinctively start leaving their nursing bed to eliminate. Within a week, puppies will using the litter tray more often than their bedding. We complete the ENS program and continue petting and holding our puppies. You may not think much can be done with such a young puppy—but it is quite the opposite. At three weeks old, studies have proven that puppies have virtually no fear. They do, however, have a strong startle reflex. Dropping metal dog-food-dishes, banging around, vacuuming, sneezing, coughing, dropping a stack of books… anything that will cause the puppies to startle. We use a speaker and play Canine Audio Therapy noises. In addition, we clip puppy nails to start their acceptance of feet handling. And lastly, we are sure to remove puppies, one at a time and spend individual time with each one. This helps begin a healthy bond with humans, as well as reduce separation anxiety later in life. Studies have proven that physical activity in young puppies actually helps their brains grow the ability to learn and bond. So during this time, we make their living space larger. We continue exposing them to new obstacles and sounds as well as give them challenges to overcome. We set up problem solving scenarios such as an simple barrier between them and their food that they must learn to go around, to find food. Problem solving and learning are crucial at this young age, and we have a lot of fun creating ways to do it! As the puppies approach 5 weeks of age, however… the game changes. The puppies now develop true fear responses, so we use more caution in exposure. During this sensitive time, we are watching closely for individual reactions so we know if we need to help a particular puppy overcome a fear stage of a particular sound, item, smell or texture. They are coming into a peak time for socializing and continuing positive experiences. This is a great age to introduce them to as many appropriate people as possible. We also introduce more less-stable objects such as miniature agility equipment, which helps build their self confidence. We have the puppies evaluated by Pat Hastings at this age. She looks at the structure of the dog including the head and a little bit of temperament. This is a very important day for the litter because this is when we decide if we are keeping a puppy for our breeding program. Puppies visit the vet, are vaccinated, microchipped and puppy bags are packed! Home-raised, hand-held, child-tested Australian Labradoodles from Oregon. As with almost any breed, their socialization and training should start at an early age and continue throughout their life. They share a love of water with their field Labrador and Poodle ancestors and often will enter water without prompting. All of our puppies receive love and care from everyone in the family. By the time they are ready to go home with you, they will be used to children and other dogs, and ready to go home to be a loving member of your family. Sound-proofing puppies Preparing Puppy Buyers As we mentioned above, the Puppy Culture program is split into week-by-week lessons. It includes a variety of exercises that are suitable for a puppy at each of their puppy growth stages, which are split up into weeks old, weeks old, months old, months old, months old, and 18 months to 2 years old. Our short answer is, yes! The Puppy Culture method is scientifically backed and it truly is a great, comprehensive program that covers all aspects of raising healthy, well-rounded puppies. The Puppy Culture program teaches many useful Puppy Culture training methods, but also covers the importance of prenatal care and how to take care of mama dogs before the puppies are even born. Of course, not all breeders follow the Puppy Culture program and have instead opted for different, similar programs. Some breeders have thoroughly studied various programs and implemented all of them into their breeding practices. Regardless if a breeder follows the Puppy Culture program or not, you should only look for breeders who utilize various enrichment methods, such as household desensitization, socialization, and early training. Although puppies are so small, only 2 months old upon adoption, their very first weeks are going to shape their behavior and emotional intelligence for the rest of their lives.

Why do you think the police force and military are using the German Shepherd so much? Sure, a Doberman can do the job just fine and there are definitely dog breeds that have stronger olfactory senses or stronger bites but they may not be willing to obey every command in every situation. They are too intelligent to outright obey everything which can sometimes be perceived as stubborn. Does that mean the German Shepherd is not smart? Absolutely not. In fact, the German Shepherd is often cited as one of the smartest dog breeds, right after their cousin the Belgian Shepherd, also known as Malinois. Their will to please outranks. How trainable is the German Shepherd Husky mix? Well, the Husky is known to be quite independent by design. So even though pairing these two very smart dog breeds makes sense at first glance, a Shepherd Husky mix might not be as easy to train as imagined. That being said, pairing a German Shepherd with a more agreeable Husky can certainly help. Genetics and temperament of the parents always play a pretty big role. This is not always the case and even a purebred may struggle with protection without proper direction and training. Always consult a professional to avoid teaching your dog negative behavior patterns barking at strangers on walks, lunging at dogs, and so on. Huskies are incredibly enduring. How could they not, they were bred to run hundreds of miles in very cold climates. But their original working purpose was quite specific and they may need to have an outlet for this desire to run. Training your dog early on will prevent behavioral issues in the future and gets your dog used to brain training.
