This can really give the puppy a bad start in life and will be no fault of its own when they do not understand the concept of housebreaking. There needs to be room to sleep, stretch out and stand, but not enough room for him to pee in one section and still have a dry place to sleep. It's Bruno's fourth day with us and he has already picked up on the concept that his crate is the place to sleep without being disturbed. We are not being extra quiet as it is the middle of the day and he must get used to noises. Also most of his quiet sleep should be adjusted for the middle of the night. He'll soon wake to eat his lunch, go to the bathroom and play. He'll be awake for a few hours and then need another nap. This crate may be perfect for now, but very soon he'll outgrow it and we'll have to get him a larger one. I let Bruno sleep for two hours and decided it was time to wake him. As soon as he turns his hours around and is sleeping through the night I will no longer worry about the length of his daytime naps. But I got puppy fever and haven't had any puppies for the past year and half and look where we are! But, I had a break in school this semester so figured I wouldn't be as busy and would have the time to spend with the pups. He is a local family dog. He is the one in the pictures with the ducks he's a duck dog and the Christmas picture. The puppies will be dewormed and come with a little blanket that we keep in the whelping box so it smells like mom and littermates. Puppies will also be vet checked and come with their first set of shots and a health certificate from the vet. We keep the puppies inside our home with 4 young children so they are socialized well. She started around 10 in the morning, for once! She had 7 boys and 3 girls. Week 1 Nothing too exciting is happening this week.They are getting lots of love already from all of us. It is pretty amazing how fast they do grow! Week 2 Busy week growing for puppies! They learned to walk this week and also their eyes are starting to crack open! It's super cute watching them learn to walk as they are very tippy and often just flop over or tumble upside down. And their eyes start to open by just a litle crack in the corner and then slowly they are able to open more and more of it. All over Clover's puppies eyes are open now and Penny's litter is starting to. Week 3 Puppies just grow so amazingly fast! This week they are all walking around fast now. They dont run yet.Super cute stage! We started using shavings this week and now I have the joy of shavings all through my house for the next 5 weeks. All the puppies got dewormed this week. And in this next week, they will start on puppy food food is a loose term.Week 4 The puppies are now sporting collars! They always sit and try to scratch it off when they first get the collar on. The boys keep holding them while they watch the Penn State basketball games. They had learned that night to scramble out over the top. So now we have all 3 wood slates in so they can't get out anymore. That's always a measure of them growing when they can start to escape their box. They get their shots on April 11th and 12th. Whilst the above may all sound really scary, they are certainly not common occurrences with the Rhodesian Labrador. They are, however, conditions you should be aware of and prepared to deal with should the need arise. Other conditions that may affect your Rhodesian Labrador but that would be minor concerns are ear infections and glaucoma. Ear Infections — As already mentioned in the care section, Rhodesian Labradors are prone to getting dirty ears which can become infected. This is usually due to bacteria and yeast growth and symptoms of infection include redness, a bad odor, and swelling. You may also find your Rhodesian Labrador trying to paw at their ears in an effort to clean them or frequently shaking their head. This is an indication that the infection has become painful and that you should seek veterinary help. Glaucoma — This is a disease of the optic nerve in which pressure is placed on the eye. If left without treatment, this condition can become chronic causing permanent damage such as blindness. Treatment varies including drugs or the possible draining of excess fluid. It is worth mentioning here that annual checkups for your Rhodesian Labrador are a really good idea. These can be done at the same time as their yearly vaccinations. In fact, many veterinarians offer packages that include both vaccinations and a checkup that are usually exceptionally well priced. Rhodesian Labrador — Puppies As a puppy, the Rhodesian Labrador will be highly energetic and love to actively play for which they need lots of safe space. This should take the form of a well-enclosed garden from which they cannot escape, or a leash being on them when out in public. It is worth noting that due to possible joint injuries, which we have covered above, that the Rhodesian Labrador puppy should take frequent but short walks. Rhodesian Labrador puppies should be fed a high-quality suitable food so that they grow healthy and do not become obese. As a guide, the weight of your puppy at 6 months old should be no more than 23 lb, and at 12 month 40lb. Like any other breed, pure or hybrid, you should always research possible Rhodesian Labrador breeders carefully. Visit the homes where the puppies are living, and insist on seeing both Mum and Dad. Watch how the breeder interacts with the puppies and how the puppies respond to them. As always anything much cheaper than this you should avoid at all costs.
