FAQs Goldendoodles, as a breed, have been around since the s. The first dogs were a cross between a purebred Golden Retriever, known everywhere for their sweet, loyal temperament, and a standard poodle, known for their intelligence, affectionate personality and non-shedding coat. Who would have thought that two such wonderful dogs could be improved?! The first generation of this goldendoodle cross is called the F1, and for many years was the only available option. However, F1bs, F2s and multigens are now available from most breeders. As you research the goldendoodle breed, you will find numerous pictures of golden, peach and apricot colored puppies. However, as the successive generations become available, so do various colors and patterns. We love diversity at Hurricane Creek, and currently offer red and white goldendoodle breeds. Quality Breed In addition to the fun colors and patterns, a quick search on the internet will also show labels such as teddybear goldendoodles and English, cream, or English cream goldendoodles. These doodles are bred, not from the golden retriever we are most accustomed to seeing, but from a white golden retriever bred in Europe. There are numerous articles discussing the nomenclature of golden retrievers and whether the terms English and American should be used. However, while I care little about that debate, I do care about the health of our puppies. Golden retrievers are known, not only for their wonderful personalities, but also for the high incidence of cancer in their breed. For reasons not clearly understood, statistics show that the white, blockier golden retrievers with the squarer heads have a much lower incidence of cancer. For that reason, we have elected to not use any American Golden Retrievers in our breeding program unless specifically bred from lines that have been free from genetic cancers for multiple generations. Goldendoodles are family friendly and make terrible protection dogs. They can be watch dogs, because they know how to bark, but they cannot be relied upon for protection because they have no aggressiveness whatsoever. Additionally, they shed very little to none. Standard Goldendoodles can weigh anywhere between 50 and 90 pounds. Personality The place where the Goldendoodle puppy really excels is its personality. Its breed is known for being simultaneously intelligent and adoring. A Goldendoodle puppy is very sociable, which makes them perfect animals for households with children and other animals or pets, even cats. Just like the Labradoodle, this breed requires correct socialization to ensure they get used to different sights, sounds and smells during puppyhood. This means taking your Goldendoodle to plenty of doggy-friendly parks so they can meet canine friends and introducing them to other people. Our Goldendoodle puppies for sale are fully trained Doodles, so you can focus on the fun bits, like bonding, eating food and playing. These dogs prefer to live in a house with a gated backyard where they can get regular exercise breaks. Do They Like to Play? Goldendoodle Puppy Training These clever dogs are perfect for first-time dog owners because Goldendoodles love to please and take great pride in learning new skills. Are Goldendoodles Intelligent? Both of its poodle and golden retriever parent breeds are known for their intelligence and trainability, and Goldendoodles have inherited this breed trait. This means the person training a Goldendoodle needs to be strong-willed, firm and consistent — but never harsh or aggressive. Much like a poodle, Doodles are sensitive dogs, and positive reinforcement is a must to bring out the best in them. How Obedient Are They? Goldendoodle pups adore human company, and making their pet parents happy brings them genuine satisfaction. As such, correct puppy training produces a highly obedient and loyal adult Goldendoodle. Older adults, people with disabilities and individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders can benefit significantly from the warmth and sweetness of these adorable Goldendoodle pups. Are They Easy to Train? Doodle puppies can be mischievous and cheeky, but aggression is practically unheard of. So as long as you treat them with the same gentle respect they offer, a Goldendoodle is one of the easiest dog breeds to train. Goldendoodles have loads of energy and require regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight and calm temperament. A Goldendoodle need a moderately high level of outdoor activity — usually a minimum of 30 minutes, but ideally one hour, of moderate to vigorous exercise per day will keep Goldendoodle puppies at their best. Unlike puppy mills, all good puppy and dog breeders provide a certificate that shows health clearances. At Pride and Prejudoodles, our tests cover common health conditions. As such, you have peace of mind when purchasing your new puppy from us. How Long Do Goldendoodles Live? Goldendoodles live for between 10 and 15 years. We hope you found our guide informative. Since Hilltop Pups team is creating and perfecting the smallest Goldendoodles along with the increasingly popular Irish English Goldendoodles; we have our own size range chart of the average sizes we have witnessed in the past 20 years of breeding. Until an organization such as AKC or CKC identifies Goldendoodles as an official breed, no organization can state what the size standards are as they vary so greatly with breeders breeding American or English Golden Retrievers, plus the range of poodle sizes from lbs. Although Goldendoodles are not considered a Purebred dog breed; it is still important to register your puppy with a reputable canine tracking organization. This will allow breeders to have the information necessary to make responsible breeding decisions. I am an official Preferred Breeder by the strict Breeding Standards set forth by CKC which has the best pedigrees for tracking ancestors for breeding purposes. There are many Designer Dog Registries, but I prefer one of the two largest reputable groups. The English lines create the Teddy Bear look. You are welcome to fly here; Louisville Kentucky airport is the closest at only 80 miles away. Many people are choosing Delivery to your door via vehicle delivery service. Here are reputable delivery companies I have been using for years; you contact the companies directly, arrange shipments with them, and pay them their shipping fee when they deliver the puppy to you. Flight Nanny Service contact Mary Venneketter for cost .Early Stimulation Training program is our highest priority which we start at 3 days old and once puppies are walking around, we still hold them every day on their backs, talk to them to create eye contact, rub all over them to make grooming easier in the future. This is our house, not a public shopping center. We require appointments to visit as you do want to make sure we are home and able to focus our attention on you and have adequate time for you to interact with the puppies. It is very important to stay as close to your scheduled arrival time as possible, give yourself that extra half hour for traffic concerns. We are at Eastern Time. Jasper is an aesthetically pleasing clean town of 15, and always rated at the top of the best places to live listings. How amazing it would be for AKC to do this; it is up to Breeders to commit to keeping their breed healthy going forward by health testing the parent dogs. Which believe me very few Breeders invest their money back into their dogs; so always demand copies of health testing prior to even submitting a deposit. DO Not trust Breeders that say they will provide the documents when the puppy goes home, demand proof up front. It is a nightmare to try to get paperwork from a Breeder after you have the puppy, because they do not have it. The Breeder is pulling on your emotions knowing you are getting attached to the puppy and then you are stuck with no proof that you have a healthy puppy that will live a long healthy life. Breeders never to rarely give you the correct documents after you have the puppy, learn from heart breaking experiences of having to re-home dogs that couldn't pass health screening. My research, commitment, and due diligence has paid off. Here is the foundation for creating the perfect Teddy Bear Goldendoodle and how to build conformity into the Breed. At Hilltop Pups we DNA test the coat type of all our dogs so we can create the most non-shedding hypoallergenic coat as possible. I follow this DNA rule when breeding to make sure my dogs are non-shedding. No guess work involved here; You can brush them and not even get hair to pull out. Next, we only breed with English Retrievers which produce a softer less shedding less matting coat than the coarser American Golden Retriever coats. The weight range of English Golden Retrievers that I have owned is for female and for males, although they look just and big and fluffier than the American Golden Retrievers. Next, we consider the color genetics behind the poodle: Reds-, browns-, and cream-colored poodles produce soft non-shedding coats. White, Gray, and Black poodles produce shredders even in the curly dogs; thus, they have been removed from Hilltop Pups breeding program. In we started breeding the Irish Goldendoodles. I am very pleased with what I have seen in the Irish Goldendoodles. Therefore, I only breed English Golden Retrievers as their life expectancy is years and very few ever have cancer. It takes a few generations to build the dark red poodle color back into the English Goldendoodles since the English Golden Retrievers are only white to cream. For the Irish we started with breeding a health tested American Golden Retriever to a health tested Irish Setter to get the hybrid vigor and dark red color; then bred that with a health tested male poodle and then back to another health tested poodle creating the F1b Irish Goldendoodles to ensure the hypo allergenic non-shed coats, plus get the dark red color and fabulous coats. They are good-natured and even-tempered, which makes them a popular choice for families with young children. Labs are known for their enthusiastic tail-wagging and their boundless energy, and they will often approach strangers with a wagging tail and a friendly face. However, they can also be boisterous and excitable, so they may not be the best choice for those looking for a calm and quiet dog. Since the Lab was bred as a hunting dog, this lovable giant will need lots of vigorous, outdoor exercise to keep him calm and centered. Yellow Labs are usually a big fan of fetching and chasing games, and enjoy a good romp in the yard with their family. Yellow Labradors also enjoy walks with their master, and are good swimmers that enjoy lakes, rivers, pools, and the beach. Overall, the Yellow Lab is a friendly, energetic breed that makes an ideal companion for those who are looking for an active lifestyle. Yellow Lab Puppies Health Considerations Though generally very healthy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 10 to 12 years — our Yellow Labs for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Yellow Lab puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. If your dog is constantly scratching or seems to have irritated skin, they may be allergic to something in their environment — like pollen or dust mites. Your vet can help you identify the source of the allergy and recommend the best course of treatment. Yellow Labs are also prone to ear infections due to their long, floppy ears. And if you notice your dog shaking their head or scratching their ears more than usual, make an appointment with the vet right away. Finding a Yellow Lab puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. The coat is typically yellow, but can also be ranging in color from light cream to fox red. When it comes to coat care, the Yellow Lab is relatively low-maintenance. The coat does not require trimming or special haircuts, although it does need to be brushed regularly to prevent tangles and mats. Labs also enjoy spending time outside, so regular baths are generally not necessary unless the dog gets particularly dirty. Meet Yellow Lab Puppies for Sale. It is their outgoing, affectionate, and eager-to-please demeanor that makes them so qualified to take on all of these jobs and still be the perfect family pet. When it comes to breed standards, the AKC recognizes three official colors for the Labrador: black, chocolate, and yellow. At Hidden Pond Labradors, we understand that everybody has a different preference in mind when they set out to bring one of these incredible dogs into their home. Yellow Labrador Retriever Breeder The yellow Lab is one of the most popular colors, in part due to its photogenic nature. This also makes them excellent show dogs, although any of the three recognized colors can easily achieve Grand Champion status. Coat shades that are classified as yellow range from white to fox red. Like chocolate, the yellow coat is a recessive color that requires both parents to carry and pass on the gene. Yellow Labrador Retrievers, just like every other color, have a stable, amiable temperament. Their trainability and discipline should not be mistaken for lethargy though. Labs are very active dogs that will bring a lot of fun energy to your household. Are you interested in the unconditional love, support, and joy a Lab can bring to your family? Who knew there could be so many areas to cover?! Which means they have the same ancestry, and a lot of shared history. In fact from the inception of the Labrador breed in the early s, all the way through to the s, black Labs were much more desirable. Chocolate Lab puppies or liver puppies as they were known at the time were frequently culled at birth. Which seems shocking to the modern dog lover! Then in the midth century, chocolate Labs started to appear in field trials and at dog shows, and gradually their star began to rise. These days, both colors are popular as working dogs, show dogs, and cherished family pets. However, the number of new black Lab puppies registered every year is still consistently much higher than the number of chocolate Lab puppies. Chocolate Lab vs Black Lab Fun Facts Black and chocolate Labradors both have the potential to become accomplished working dogs — either in the field , as search and rescue dogs, service dogs , military dogs, police dogs or narcotics dogs. Genetically, it is more likely for a Lab to be black than chocolate, because the gene for a black coat will always mask the gene for a brown coat if it is present. The change was essentially an exercise in rebranding, because chocolate sounds nicer! Black labs have black fur, and chocolate Labs have fur which ranges from mahogany to deep, dark brown. In either color, a small white patch on the chest is permissible. Black Labs have black noses and eyes rims, and mid to dark brown eyes. Chocolate Labs have brown noses and eye rims, and light brown or hazel eyes. Labs weigh 55 to 80lbs, and one UK study found that chocolate Labradors weighed, on average, 3lbs more than black and yellow Labradors. Males Labs are typically bigger 65 — 80lbs than females 55 — 70lbs. Show Labradors also known as English type are shorter and stockier than working American type Labs, who are taller and slimmer. Show Labs are also more likely to still sport the famous Labrador otter tail. Chocolate Lab Vs Black Lab Temperament What about personality — do the differences between a black vs chocolate Labrador go any further than fur deep? This is a hotly contested topic! Historically, one of the reasons chocolate Labs were less popular as working dogs is because they were regarded as less intelligent, and too boisterous. What does the research say? In , researchers at Edinburgh University surveyed the owners of nearly Labrador owners in the UK. They reported that chocolate Labs were noisier, more likely to become agitated when ignored, and more excitable than black dogs. In many ways, these results raise more questions than they answer. Is one study right, and one study wrong? Are they both right, but the link between color and temperament is only established in breeding lines in some countries? Or is the link a result of other factors, such as chocolate and black Labs being raised differently — perhaps because black Labs are more likely to be destined for field work? In both sets of results, chocolate Labs were regarded as less trainable than black Labs. Is this bad news for chocolate Labs? For example, someone who works their Labs, or participate in field trials, will have much higher training expectations than a family keeping their dog as a pet. And when it comes to choosing between a chocolate vs black Lab as a pet, many of us are unlikely to even reach the level of training where any difference in ability becomes apparent. A more reliable way of predicting trainability Whatever color puppy has caught your eye, the best way to gauge how well they will respond to training is to ask the breeder what the other dogs in their family tree were like. Some pedigrees are laden with chocolate Labs who hold field titles galore. In the UK, a study of Labrador life expectancy reported that chocolate Labradors have a shorter average lifespan than non-chocolate Labradors .All Labs are at risk of: hip and elbow dysplasia further joint disorders in the shoulders and knees thyroid disease the eye disease progressive retinal atrophy the neurological condition degenerative myelopathy copper toxicosis and bloat. In the UK, a review of the veterinary records of Labradors also found that chocolate Labradors were more likely to experience ear infections and hot spots than either black or yellow Labradors. But in their favor, chocolate Labradors might be less associated with the POMC gene linked to excessive appetite and weight gain. Labs from American working lines tend to be more driven, and motivated to work. While English Labs are more content to go with the flow, and dare I say it, a little more sedentary. Chocolate Labs vs Black Lab Puppies Whichever Lab you love the look of more, the secret of making sure your dreams match reality is finding a puppy from a really great breeder. Good breeders health test their sire and dam, to protect the next generation from unnecessary hereditary illnesses. All breeding Labs should be tested for: hip and elbow dysplasia healthy eyesight and the gene for exercise induced collapse. They will ask you lots of questions about your household and lifestyle. For more on finding that perfect breeder, visit us here! Any color of Labrador can be the perfect pet in the right home. But there are still lots of missing pieces in the research. And chocolate Labradors appear to have suppressed health and lifespan compared to black Labs. Chocolate Labradors can be just as loving and loyal as black Labs. So is it possible that with as much attention to breeding for health and personality, that they could be just as long lived and trainable too? Only time will tell! Find Out More! Hop on over to our forum for Labrador chat about this, and lots of other topics! References and Further Reading. Find out how we get chocolate, black or yellow puppies and what color pups we might get when we mix Labradors of different colors. Strictly speaking, there are only three different types of Labrador color: black Labs, brown Labs usually referred to as chocolate and yellow Labs. These are the three colors recognized and accepted by the Kennel Club In practice, there is a wide range of shades of yellow Labrador color, from palest cream to richest fox red. But what makes a Labrador brown, or black, or yellow. And what about Silver Labradors? Where does this new and controversial coat color come in to play? Where do Black and Chocolate Labradors come from? The information that determines whether or not your Labrador is basically black or basically chocolate is passed on through a pair of genes. Why black is a dominant color: It is normal for dominant genes to switch off, or over-ride, recessive genes. And that is exactly what happens here. A dog with BB genes will be black, because he has no little b gene, the one that gives us a brown coat. But a Bb dog will be black too, because if the dominant black gene is present, it switches off the brown gene. How chocolate Labradors are made: Even though a dog inherits a little b gene, the dog will only appear brown if no black gene B is present at all. Two black genes BB gives you a black Labrador One of each Bb also give you a black Labrador Two brown genes bb gives you a chocolate Labrador Remember that the black dominant gene always switches of the brown gene, so only the dog at the bottom will actually look brown. Generation after generation of black dogs can continue to have only black puppies if dogs with the Bb gene are only ever mated to dogs with BB genes. Remember, the dog in the middle of our list above will look black, but pass the brown gene on to about half of all its offspring. But things are never that simple are they? Because of course some Labradors are neither black nor brown. The genetic information that creates a yellow coat comes from another pair of genes altogether. And these genes have a different kind of power. The result is a yellow dog But little ee is recessive, and if the dominant E gene is present, it switches off the masking gene. It only takes one big E gene to do this. So the dog will only appear yellow if no big E gene is present at all. There are three possible combinations of eee gene that a dog could inherit. There are nine different possible combinations. Nine different possible Labrador genotypes! The chart below lists them genotype is the genetic makeup, phenotype is the appearance of the dog.

We have been in foster for one year with So Cal Bulldog Rescue. We were surrendered by our owner, because we were a little more active than they could handle. We would do well in an experienced home that understands how much energy and effort frenchies need. We love each other, but we are not fans of other dogs. I mean, c'mon, we're French Bulldogs. We are adorable and super cute. And yes, we like to play and run around, but most young dogs do. We love to go for walks and cuddle. Ringo likes to play with his red ball, and if you throw it, he will chase after it and bring it back to you. I have kind of a strong prey drive. I love to watch birds and lizards through the windows. We are very loving dogs and just need the chance to share our love with our very own family. We don't really like other dogs, and because of my strong prey drive, we don't think cats should be in our future. Older kids are great. Ringo is a bit of a jumper, so he would probably knock down a small child. Keep in mind that we could use some additional training and a strong pack leader. Sable Brown Some puppies will continue to have the same coat and be all-black, all-grey, or all-white their entire life. It should be noted that these shades — particularly without other patterns or colors — are quite rare. The most common hues for German Shepherds are black and tan. These coat colors tend to perform better in dog shows and competitions, making them a desired trait. Breeders will make an effort to breed dogs with black and tan coats in the hopes of creating similarly hued pups. There are some other coat colors you should be aware of. German Shepherd pups can also have distinct colors such as blue , Isabella , Panda , and Bi-color. These coat colors tend to be the result of rare genetic variations or mutations. Due to this, they are not often seen in the general German Shepherd population. They are flukes and it can be quite difficult to know if such pups will show up in a litter or not. German Shepherd puppy color prediction is possible as coat color is all down to genetics. German Shepherds present as specific shades because they have the genes for those colors. At the same time, they may contain genes for other colors, but these may be recessive. These recessive genes can still be passed onto their pups, however. This is why you will find color discrepancies within a single litter. To gain a better understanding of how the color of your German Shepherd puppy may be predicted, here is a closer look at German Shepherd color genes: What are German Shepherd Color Pigments? These pigments interact with other genes responsible for color, altering them to a certain degree. The final color of your German Shepherd will depend on the specific interaction. Eumelanin is the pigment that is responsible for black. When it interacts with other genes, it can result in yellow, black with a blue tint, or off-white. Pheomelanin defaults to red but when it is combined with other genes, there will be varying shades of red, including deep brown, light brown, pale gold, and yellow. These genes have a pair of alleles — one from each German Shepherd parent. The alleles are located at specific locations on a chromosome. This position is known as locus or loci. When two German Shepherds mate, each dog will contribute an allele at random. This means that there is a fifty percent chance of a particular shade being passed onto their offspring. One of these alleles at each locus is dominant. This will result in specific coat color. Known as the A-locus, it is responsible for the base color of German Shepherds as well as the patterns. If the associated gene is dominant, the puppy may be fawn, sable, or wild sable. If the gene is recessive, the dog may be black and tan, black, or bi-color. What is the Extension Locus? The E locus is responsible for the black face mask of the German Shepherd. It also plays a role in the presentation of yellow and red in coats. The alleles for this gene are black E , red e , and mask Em. The presence of this gene results in dominant black, fawn colors, and brindle. This is often known as the brown locus as it represents brown, chocolate, and liver colors. There are two brown alleles — dominant brown and recessive brown. Two recessive alleles will dilute black to brown. If the dog has red or yellow pigments, this allele can cause their nose and foot pads to be brown. The diluted locus is responsible for a diluted pigment, causing the lightening of other pigments. It turns black or brown to gray. It can also turn the darker shades to blue or very light brown. Color dilution is the result of a mutation so this locus can be pretty rare. This locus has dominant and recessive alleles. Two recessive alleles can dilute black to gray or blue and red to cream. Not only can they tell what genes make up the parents, but they can also come up with scenarios for which genes can be passed on. This allows breeders to narrow down the range of shades the puppies in a litter can be. German Shepherd puppies can be born black, white, or grey. As the dogs get older, though, their coats will begin to change in some shape or form. Most German Shepherd puppies will change color. This transformation takes place at around 8 weeks. Every German Shepherd is different. Most will come into their final coat by the time they are 2 months old. The coats of some dogs may continue to change throughout their puppyhood, only coming in when they are around 2 years old. Most reputable breeders will not breed with a particular color in mind. This is because they focus on health and physique rather than coat color. As tan and black German Shepherds are the most common and sought after, many breeders will choose to breed two dogs of these colors together. Unless previous genetic testing is done, a breeder has no way of knowing what dominant or recessive genes each dog carries. This is why you will often find surprises in any litter, with one or more puppies being a completely different color to the rest of their littermates. There are many ways to predict what color your German Shepherd puppy may be. From genes to variations, there is a lot to learn. Once you figure it all out, you will be one step closer to making an educated guess. Peter My name is Peter and I am a dog lover. I have two German Shepherd dogs, one of which is called Biscuit because his coat is very light with brown patches. My wife and I moved from the UK to Ohio where we now live with our two daughters. We love squash on weekends and following the English Premier League closely! Previous Article. Liver These are all approved show-ring standard coat colors in case you want to show your GSD. But is there any way to know for sure what coat color your GSD puppy will have when they grow up? First-time German Shepherd owners are often very surprised to learn that a large breed dog like the German Shepherd can continue growing for 24 to 36 months. An adult German Shepherd dog may weigh anywhere from 50 to 90 pounds and stand anywhere from 22 to 26 inches tall paw pad to shoulder. That is a lot of growth that needs to get done. For this reason, genetically speaking, it is advantageous for a large breed puppy to grow in spurts, spacing it out over time. Canine coat color experts explain that dogs have two basic pigments: eumelanin melanin and phaeomelanin. Eumelanin Eumelanin pigment always defaults to black. Eumelanin not only determines basic coat color but also controls for iris eye colors and nose colors. Phaeomelanin Phaeomelanin always defaults to red. Like eumelanin, the introduction of different genes can determine where on the red spectrum phaeomelanin expresses shows up. Unlike eumelanin, phaeomelanin only affects coat color and not eyes or nose. This is the chart many breeders use to design breeding programs to focus on certain coat colors. Each parent dog contributes a set of genes that control for color: coat color, eye iris color, and nose color as well as skin color. If you have a preference for a specific adult coat color, whether because you want to show your GSD or you are developing your breeding program, the best guarantee is to work closely with a knowledgeable breeder who understands coat color genetics. There is one exception to the coat color change to be aware of: often GSD puppies born with white coats will stay white. The coat is no exception here, as we mentioned in the introduction here. When your GSD puppy is born, all the puppies are typically but not always solid in color. The most common GSD puppy colors are black, grey, or — surprisingly — white. Kennels Von Lotta, a German Shepherd breeder, and kennel have posted this picture of a litter of newborn neonate German Shepherd puppies that were born black. Whelping to 2 weeks The puppies will start to show some differences in coat color and also coat length. By the day mark, breeders say it is often possible to tell if a GSD puppy is potentially going to grow up to have a long coat. As South Florida Shepherds kennel and breeder explains, the very same parent dogs can produce GSD puppies with very different adult coat colors. Because nearly all GSDs are displaying their permanent adult coloration by 18 to 24 months, continued changes or a sudden recurrence of color changes should always be investigated further. Now you know what to watch for as your little fluffy German Shepherd puppy starts to display their full and fabulous adult coat color and pattern. Puppies When choosing a companion dog, it is normal for coat color to be a major consideration. But how about the German Shepherd coat? Do German Shepherd puppies change color? This article will discuss German Shepherd puppy coat coloring and how that coloring changes over time. Yes, German Shepherd puppies change color as they develop into adulthood. Even after they completely shed their puppy coat and grow their permanent adult coat, you can still expect to see some subtle changes in color. Instead, it sheds and changes continuously from birth to around 6 months. Once your German Shepherd turns 7 months old, the changes to their coat color will be more subtle. Nevertheless, it will continue to transform until they become adults at around 2 years old. Puppies are single-coated and their fur is generally soft and fluffy. Over time, they will shed that coat and develop a double-coat composed of dense fur and coarse outer hairs. Thick, downy fur helps puppies regulate their temperature within their first few months of life. However, their needs will change as they develop into adults. In the spring, German Shepherds blow their undercoats in preparation for the warm summer months. They will again shed heavily in the fall to develop a thicker and possibly darker winter coat. However, their appearance will still change—possibly multiple times—until well into adulthood, which starts at around 2 years old. However, you may still notice some subtle changes in thickness as the seasons turn. The color might also change slightly due to various factors like diet and sun exposure. However, experienced breeders can often tell whether a puppy will be long-coated before they turn a month old. It is also common for some unique markings to appear or disappear at this time. Nevertheless, the change in appearance might still be significant between 7 and 18 months old. Their shade could become darker or lighter, and their coat pattern can show some slight changes as well. Changes could still occur as a result of diet, environmental exposure, or health issues. No matter what color you prefer, your German Shepherd will benefit from proper nutrition and supplements for dog coat growth. It can take time for their color to develop as they mature. Black German shepherds are one of the color patterns that you see in this dog breed that does not change over time. Unlike the other colors you see in German shepherds, a black German shepherd will be born black and remain black. Many people are afraid of all black dogs and sometimes will not want a black German shepherd. Black German shepherds have the same temperament as any other color German shepherd and will make a great companion for you. If you are wondering if your German shepherd puppy will be all black, simply look at the parents. If the dam and sire are black or have a mostly black coat, then there is a possibility that some of the puppies will come out all black. White German shepherds are like black german shepherds. They are born white and will stay white for the rest of their lives. There will be no color changes over the next several years. If they end up being not a pure white German Shepherd, you will then see some color variation over time. If you want to learn even more about German shepherds, click here! While they are growing up and learning, their coat is changing with them. Here is a timeline of what their coat could look like at different stages: German Shepherds at Birth The puppies are born! German shepherd puppies are born all black. At this point, it is hard to tell what color they will be, and they need to do some growing before we can be sure of their color. The only exception to this rule is that if your puppy is born all white, they will stay all white, and there should be no further changes. You will be able to tell if they will be an all-black German shepherd or if their coat will change. This is also the time period when you will be able to tell what type of coat they will have. German shepherds can have shorter coats or longer coats. The most common coat a German shepherd will have is a medium-length coat. Closer to the end of the 2-week mark is when you will be able to tell for sure what type of coat your puppy will have. They can get lighter and darker during this time, sometimes returning to all black as well. Your puppy will start to grow and even shed its coat in this time. If your puppy has any red, brown, sable, or any other variations other than black, they should be showing up by now. Even though your pup should be fully grown, believe it or not, their coat can still change at this time. With seasons changing and your dog blowing out their coat, it is not uncommon to see another change in their coats. Their coats could have a small change or a drastic change. At this point, only time will be able to tell what your puppy will look like in the end. Once they reach the age of two or 24 months , you can almost be certain that this is what your dog is supposed to look like. If you want even more common traits and specs for German Shepherds, you can check out the link here! As we mentioned, German Shepherds typically stop changing colors when they reach the age of two. There are rare cases, but sometimes they can go through another color change. It is unlikely though. If your dog goes through another drastic color change, you may want to reach out to your veterinarian or the breeder you purchased your puppy from. It is best if you go through a breeder to get your German shepherd puppy. When you go through a breeder, they will be able to tell you any health concerns that this specific breed could have. They try to breed these puppies without any health concerns, and they will often have specific tests done to show that these health problems are not present in the litter. You can find reputable breeders on the American Kennel Clubs website. When you go to a breeder from the AKC, your puppy should also come with a certificate of authenticity. Can I show a German shepherd? You will also want to get a dog with certain markings if you want to show your dog. Some German shepherds, like the sable coats and white coats, cannot be show dogs. Consult a vet 1. Labrador is getting bored. Your Lab might not be sick but is just bored. This can be the case when you are not spending quality time with your dog, and it is not feeling active. But when you are ready to take it outside for a walk, Labradors will suddenly have a ton of energy. Improper or insufficient diet Labradors tend to be very energetic and require quality food to meet their energy needs. You need to make sure you are feeding your Lab the correct diet. You can talk to your vet about pet food options. Depression Depression is not just limited to humans but dogs face it more than us. Almost all of the dogs suffer from separation anxiety when not appropriately attended to. Similarly, due to their dynamic and social nature, Labradors are more prone to suffer from depression when their owner is not spending time with it. If you are noticing your Labrador is lying on the sofa day and night, it may be due to depression. Try spending more than average time with it, take it on random walks, and purchase new toys for it. Age Your Labrador is getting old, which causes them to not run around as much. As Labradors get older, their body will demand more energy to move, so they sleep more to recover. If you are noticing gradual laziness in your Labrador, it may be due to their growing age, so no need to worry. Illness Many dogs sleep a lot when they are feeling ill. Take them to a vet to be evaluated if they are normally more active. Medication Most of the time, regular vaccination or some medication causes mild illness or fatigue that causes Labs to feel lazy. Mostly The laziness due to medication is temporary, just due to the side effects. The weather is too hot. Exercise along with water access and shaded areas are going to be helpful during the summer. Is Labrador a lazy dog? No, not at all, Labradors are not lazy dogs even though they are considered an energetic breed of dog. However, there can be some situations in which Labrador may act lazy such as due to weather or when ill. Young Labradors are challenging to handle because of their super active and social nature. But with time, in their older ages, Labradors may get lazy, and you will notice a significant fall in their activities. Are Labrador low energy? No, Labradors are not low-energy pups. Labradors are considered the most fun-loving and as well as active breeds when compared with the other breeds. Additionally, as active dogs, their body demands plenty of exercise to get rid of behavioral problems. At the same time, Labs enjoy the quick run and fetching game, as well as love playing with the ball. Moreover, Labradors are water dogs which means they love swimming, another trait to show their energy. How to increase Labrador energy when it is getting lazy? At this point, you are well aware of the causes of laziness in Labradors. As none of us want a lazy Lab, lying on the couch and not giving us company. Proper diet As mentioned above improper diet can be a reason why your Labrador is getting lazy. So to reverse the cause, try to feed your lab with a healthy and suitable diet. Make sure that Labrador is eating correctly according to its activities. Regular exercise Labradors are super active dogs and hence need a good amount of exercise. Regular exercise will never make your dog lazy so try to take them out for a walk daily. In this way, the furball will feel active and energetic. Reduce boredom Suppose you are not getting enough time to play with your dog, try to bring toys and other accessories to avoid boredom. Bring some chew toys for your Labrador so that they will have behavioral issues because of boredom. Ensure that you are selecting lab-oriented toys; otherwise, the dog may deny playing with them. You might be feeding it the wrong foods or the wrong amount. This would be especially likely if it started being lazier when you started feeding it differently. It would help to consult with your vet when you see them next on the diet it is getting and whether or not you are feeding it the right foods and in the correct quantities. It would also help to make sure that no one else has been feeding it. You can take a look here to see everything that you need to know about what you should be feeding your Labrador puppy. It has depression Dogs can get depression, like humans do, and it could be the reason why your Labrador puppy has been acting lazy. It is not likely that depression would be the reason if it is a healthy Labrador puppy in a healthy environment. However, it would be more likely if it has not always been so lazy. It would also be more likely if it suddenly became lazy after something happened such as if it lost a friend, you moved home or a family member moved away. Nature Labrador puppies naturally sleep a lot and it is normal for them to sleep for between 15 and 20 hours per day. This is because they are growing fast when they are puppies and they grow while they are sleeping. Illness or injury Illness or injury could be causing it to be lazy. This would be more likely if it has become fatigued suddenly and if it has been showing other signs of being ill or injured such as being fatigued when awake or vomiting. If it does seem like illness could be the cause the best option would be to take it to a vet. Hot weather If your Labrador puppy has suddenly started being lazier as the weather has become hotter it could be because of the weather. This would be more likely if it is lazier when it is hot outside. In this case, it would be important to give it lots of access to shade, water and a cool room. It would also help to exercise it in the mornings or evenings when it is cooler and the sun is not directly overhead. Not enough exercise Labradors are a breed that is meant to get a lot of exercise on a daily basis. If your Labrador puppy is not getting much exercise it could be causing it to behave abnormally. It is normally recommended for them to get at least an hour of exercise per day as healthy adults. It is debated that, as puppies, the amount of exercise they should be getting should be limited since they are still growing. It is generally recommended for them to get around 5 minutes of exercise per month of age up to twice daily source. Things to consider Below are some things to consider about your Labrador puppy being lazy. If it has always been lazy If your Labrador puppy has suddenly started being lazy, it would help to consider what else happened when it first started doing it. If it did start being lazy suddenly it would make it more likely to be due to things such as a change in its diet, becoming ill or the weather getting too hot for it. Whereas, if it has not started doing it suddenly it would be more likely to be due to its nature especially if it is not lazy when it is awake but it just sleeps a lot which would be normal. However, it could also be that you have always been feeding it incorrectly or that there is a more serious issue. When it becomes less lazy It would also help to consider the timing of when it becomes lazy since the timing could also have something to do with it. How to get your Labrador puppy to be less lazy Below are some options you have when trying to get your Labrador puppy to be less lazy. Make sure its diet is right As mentioned above, if your Labrador is not getting the right diet it could be what is causing it to be lazy. If you want to get your Labrador puppy to be less lazy and for it to be as healthy as possible it is important to make sure that it is eating correctly. You can look here to see what you should be feeding it. Take it to a vet If you cannot figure out why your Labrador puppy is lazy, it is fatigued while it is awake, it has been showing signs of illness or it has become lazy suddenly the best option would be to take it to a vet. By doing so you will be able to get expert advice tailored towards your particular Labrador and to rule out medical causes. Keep it cool If your Labrador puppy has started being lazy as the weather has gotten hotter it would be important to help keep it cool. You can do this by giving it access to lots of shade, water and cool areas. It would also be important to avoid letting it be out in direct sunlight for extended periods since it could cause it to get heatstroke. Give it toys to play with In addition to the above, you could also give it things to play with to help keep it stimulated. Things that you could give it would include toys or puzzle games designed for dogs. Allow it to sleep It is usual for Labrador puppies to sleep a lot when they are puppies because they are growing fast and they need sleep to support their growth. As a result, it is important to let it sleep whenever it feels the need to sleep. Puppy lazy sitting and bunny hopping Hello everyone, As of today, my sweet yellow girl, Bella, is 14 weeks old. I adopted her from a reputable breeder. Both the mom and dad's hips, eyes, etc. However, I do know things can still happen which is what brings me here with some questions - specifically with my worry being over hip dysplasia. We have been to the vet twice so far and a third visit is coming in a week for regular shots, etc. Through the regular checks, the vet hasn't noticed any concerns with Bella's hips. So far, so good as far as he can tell this early in the game. I know that x-rays tell the true story and that she needs to be older for this. I've read differing information - some things I've read says it's a sign of HD others say it's normal, and actually a sign of healthy hips. Bella can sit properly but tends to "lazy" sit in her crate for example or sometimes on a slicker surface such as tile, etc. She also does it when she is tired or I guess truly "lazy. Or, is it always a sign of HD? Or, am I possibly mistaking this "hop" for normal puppy behavior? Bella will trot and take off full speed into a hop or gallop of sort when she is at full on speed. I'm not completely sure it is a bunny hop yet - if I watch videos of dogs galloping, it almost seems as though they are bunny hopping too. I'm so confused and trying not to borrow worry. However, is it normal for a lab puppy to do this type of bunny hop or gallop? How would I tell the difference between a normal "gallop" and a bunny hop? I don't know what to think at this point. My chocolate lab that lived to be almost 15 had a really strange gait when she ran fast but I never worried over HD, etc. I didn't know at the time to even question it. However, she had no big issues until probably her last six months of life due to another problem unrelated to her hips. Obviously, these are also questions for the vet but I also wanted your take on it too. Thanks again!

The German Shepherd X Black Mouth Cur will appreciate family members that are willing to play with and exercise them, which includes older children. Both parent breeds can be wary around other dogs, which is another reason for early socialization. While socializing your dog, make sure it meets a good variety of dogs and other animals as well as new people. If you already have pets and are bringing a German Shepherd X Black Mouth Cur into the family, ensure that you take things slowly and allow both dogs time to get to know one another before leaving them alone. If you bring one of these dogs home as a puppy, it will be a lot easier to introduce them to cats and other dogs than if you bring home an older dog that has no experience with other animals. It will require a gradual and patient introduction to other pets and will benefit from early socialization. If you are feeding dry food, expect to give about three cups of good-quality kibble per day. If you are feeding canned food, weigh your dog and feed according to the instructions on the food packaging. If you use treats as a training aid or you give treats regularly, you will have to reduce the amount of food you give accordingly. You should provide 2 hours of exercise a day. This can include walking on a leash, but you should try and offer more intense exercise, too. The breed can do well in agility and also performs well in other canine sports competitions. Alternatively, let them have the run of a fenced-off yard and throw a ball for them to chase. The breed will benefit from being given tasks and jobs to perform. This will keep their mind active and alert while helping train them. Socialization is also very important for this breed, especially to ensure that they do not view strangers or other dogs and animals as threats to the family. The Black Mouth Cur is a moderate shedding dog with a short coat and is also considered easy to groom. You will benefit from giving your dog a daily brush , especially during and around shedding season. Check the ears occasionally and clean around the outside if necessary. Possible health conditions for the cross include: Minor Conditions. Photo: Instagram The Black Mouth Cur German Shepherd mix is a fairly new mixed-breed dog that comes from a line of two dogs that are both energetic and initially bred for hunting. Most Black Mouth Cur German Shepherd mixes will have the signature curved back of the German Shepherd with a wedge-shaped head and a longer tail, along with triangular ears that flap down and to the side. They may have longer legs than most German Shepherds, with a black snout and muzzle and a black nose, characteristic of the Black Mouth Cur. Thought to have been used by early settlers to the United States, the Black Mouth Cur is thought to have been developed by crossing a Mastiff-type dog with various types of hounds and terriers, to develop the ultimate hunting companion with the stamina, agility and speed to help hunters fetch or take down small game. Black Mouth Curs were designed to be energetic and active hunting companions. This makes them perfect dogs for those who lead an active lifestyle with plenty of hiking, walking or indeed hunting! Their energy requirements make them less than ideal for the elderly, or those who live in small spaces or apartments. Beyond that basic history, very little is known about the Black Mouth Cur. The history of crossbreeding the Black Mouth Cur is even more elusive than the history of the breed itself. Though crossbreeding dogs became popular in the United States in the s, before soaring in the s and early s, so it is entirely likely that some of the first instances of crossbreeding the Black Mouth Cur happened during this time period. Some of the most popular Black Mouth Cur mixes include:. Breed Info Mixed breeds are becoming increasingly more popular all over the world. Since the German Shepherd is one of the most popular breeds in the U. If you are wondering whether the German Shepherd Black Mouth Cur mix would be a great addition to your family, this article will give you all you need to know about this adorable pup. They are classified as herding dogs and were bred originally to herd sheep and protect sheep. Today they are one of the most versatile working dog breeds as they are extremely intelligent, courageous and have a strong drive to work. They are used for a variety of tasks such as service dogs, military work, police work as well as personal protection. Outside of their working roles, they make good family dogs as well because they quickly bond to humans, and good with children, and are very loving, affectionate, and playful. They are believed to the originated in the south of the U. The exact combinations used to create the bred remain unknown today. What is known is that Black Mouth Curs were bred to be an all-around farm dog. They were originally used mostly for hunting, protection, herding and pretty anything else a farm dog would need to do. Outside of their farm roles, they make great dogs for single people who have an active lifestyle. However, they can also be good family dogs but need a little supervision and training around younger children as they can get a bit wild at times. Like the GSD, they form strong bonds with their family and have a protective nature which makes them a good guard dog as well. Although German Shepherds are much more popular, Black Mouth Curs have a lot of great traits that make for a very well-rounded dog. Breeders that intentionally cross Black Mouth Curs with GSDs are looking to create the ultimate hunting, herding, personal protection dog, who not only works hard but plays hard as well. No matter how they come about, learning more about the general characteristics of this mix will help you understand whether they would the perfect fit into your life. However, there are also some differences that make this a unique crossbred as well. If you are considering welcoming one of these mixes in your life, here the general characteristics you should expect. However, males tend to trend larger than females in terms of height and weight. One could expect a Black Mouth Cur GSD to be around 19 — 20 inches in height on average and between 45 — 85 pounds on average. Coat German Shepherds have a medium to long coat with a double coat. They shed all year, but they also blow their coat twice annually in the spring and the fall. German Shepherds have a variety of coat color patterns including all black, black and tan, blonde , liver , blue, and sable. Black Mouth Curs have a short coat of coarse or fine fur. They also shed year-round, and also shed more heavily twice a year. Since their coat is shorter even though they shed there will be less fur around your home. Black Mouth Curs come in a variety of color patterns as well. Most typically their coat will be yellow, black, brown, fawn or brindle. But you can expect a mix of this type to most likely have a medium-length coat. They only need to be brushed one time a week during normal times and twice a week during shedding season. A bath every few months is sufficient unless your pup gets unusually dirty. Teeth cleaning and nail clipping should be done in the same frequency as any other dog. Assuming your mix has floppy ears opposed to the erect GSD ears , then you should clean their ears more regularly as floppy ears are generally more likely to develop ear infections. Given the fact that both these breeds were bred to protect sheep and other farm animals from predators they are capable of going up against large wild animals. Black Mouth Curs have a bite force of around psi, and German Shepherds have a bite force of about psi. Therefore, it is expected for this mix to have a bite force of between and psi. Speed The German Shepherd is known for their speed and agility. They run at a speed of up to 30 miles per hour. Black Mouth Curs are also very athletic and have been documented to run at a top speed of up to 20 miles per hour. Not only do these breeds need plenty of physical exercise they also need a sufficient amount of mental exercise since they are very smart and need to be intellectually challenged. The BMC German Shepherd will need a minimum of two minute-long walks or high-energy play sessions each day. Trainability Both German Shepherds and Black Mouth Curs are extremely trainable, meaning a mix between these breeds will be easy to train as well. Additionally, both breeds become very bonded and loyal to their owners which also helps with their trainability because they are eager to please their family. German Shepherds are ranked as the third most intelligent dog breed. Temperament The German Shepherd Black Mouth Cur mix will be a courageous, loyal, protective dog, that is eager to please their family. Although this mix is a hard worker, they will also be a sweet affectionate ball of fluff around the people they trust. If given proper training and socialization this mix will be friendly to people outside the family as well other animals. This mix will also be good with children, they just need to be taught how to be gentler and not to jump on and potentially knock over little ones. Health Although mixed breeds typically have less issues than their purebred counterparts, here are some of the health issues to look out for with this mixed breed: Black Mouth Curs are known to be affected by hip dysplasia, ear infections, cataracts and epilepsy. German Shepherds are known to be affected by bloat and digestive issues, hip and elbow dysplasia, diabetes, hemophilia and cataracts. Therefore, one could expect a mix between these breeds to potentially encounter any of the above conditions. A healthy diet, routine exercise, and regular vet visits are also key to having a healthy pup. Lifespan German Shepherds have a, average lifespan of 12 and 14 years. Black Mouth Curs have an average lifespan of 12 and 16 years. Accordingly, the German Shepherd Black Mouth Cur mix can be expected to have an average lifespan of around 14 years of age. The Canine Partners program runs events for various canine sports such as agility, rally, obedience, as well as various performance tests such as those for hunting or scent work. Usually, these mixes are the result of unintentional mating, so it may be very hard to find a breeder who specializes creating this pup. They are loyal, courageous, intelligent, protective over their family members, but also a sweet loving pup. They need a family who has an active lifestyle to be able to meet their physical activity requirements. This mix is a breeze to train and will give your family loads of fun times for many years in the future. Both of these dogs can be friendly but personalities differ, so you never know. The German Shepherd is known for being intelligent, curious, and alert. All dogs need proper socialization and that will be a big factor in how they interact with others. Von Stephanitz had in his mind what a good working dog should be and a few generations of breeding fulfilled what Hektor envisioned. Horand von Grafrath is known to be the first German Shepherd Dog. Horand von Grafrath was bred to other similar styled dogs that were believed to have the same traits as what Von Stephanitz was looking for. His most successful offspring was Hektor von Schwaben. Von Stephanitz is widely credited for being the founder of this incredible breed. Von Stephanitz had intended for his breed to work as herding dogs, however, as Germany became more and more industrialized he saw the need to make it working dog. He convinced the German government to use the breed. The breed initially became popular in World War 1. Many American and allied servicemen grew attached to the breed during the war and brought them back to the states after the war was over. The Allied troops fell in love with the breed but not with the fact that it had German roots. It became common for police departments and those looking for true working dogs to import their dogs from Germany because the American dogs had such bad health problems. They then moved westward to Arkansas and Oklahoma. Like most dog breeds they were used to help hunt as well as be guard dogs. Over time this became a very rare breed of dog. Some breeders resurrected them and kept them going, but they are still not that common. They are a short-coated good natured dog.

It does not like being left alone in the house showing signs of nervousness under such circumstances. Despite its graceful appearance, the Poolky can be mischievous, goofy, and is always ready to play. Because of its terrier ancestry, it may chase small animals and sound an alarm if a stranger enters its territory. It gets along well with babies, making a good playing companion for toddlers provided the children know how to approach and handle a dog. Care Exercise Silky Poos are active dogs that need moderate exercise along with mental stimulation. They enjoy romping in the yard, walking with their owner, or going to the dog park. They will be more than happy to take their workout indoors with an enthralling game of fetch. Grooming When it comes to grooming, the Silkypoos require a thorough combing and brushing twice or thrice a week, along with an occasional bath to remove mat and keep their coat free from tangles. You can brush their teeth regularly and trim their nails once a month. Health Problems Silkydoodles are a healthy breed, but some individuals may be prone to Legg-Perthes disease, epilepsy, patellar luxation, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, and progressive retinal atrophy. Training Socialization: Taking your Silky Poo out and walking it on a leash around a public place will help it in growing comfortable with people and other dogs. If it barks or becomes unruly, do not yell or pull back on its leash. Make sure that you maintain calm-assertive energy. You can distract your dog with a light tug of its leash sideways, touch, or a unique sound you have used while training it. Dealing its chasing instincts: Silky Poos often chase cats, squirrels, or other rodents for fun. The desire to chase small moving objects can come from a lot of reasons including boredom and lack of exercise. If your Silky Poo has high prey drive, let your dog play with balls, Frisbees, and Kong toys in the yard so that it can efficiently expend its energy. Enrolling your pet in training facilities offering classes on obedience, tracking, and agility is also an energy-releasing alternative. Feeding Provide your Poolky with about three-fourth to one-and-a-half cups of dry food on a daily basis. Inez Smith 01 Jan 22 The staff is kind, extremely knowledgeable and Patient. Get your small dog from them, they have plenty to choose from. Patience has an amazing selection of puppies and takes care of them extremely well. Highly recommend. I feel very strongly about submitting my feedback. Almost 15 years ago, we purchased a Yorkie Poo. Wonderful, amazing pup. Great health until her senior years. She passed away in July. My first go-to was this business based on the amazing experience we had the first time. We now live 8 hours away, so there was a lot of texting with pictures and videos. We purchased a new pup in August. She came home with a clean bill of health, however, upon checkup from our local vet, she had some type of infection in her lungs and she had severe ear mites. She was 12 weeks old. I called Patience's Puppies to inform them so they could treat other puppies. There was no offer. Fast forward to recently, I contacted them again looking for a sister for our new pup. There are questions that have yet to be answered. How this person has handled the entire situation is horrendous. I hate giving bad reviews to any business, especially what's considered a local business, but this was uncalled for. We will never do business with Patience Puppies again. I have included screen shots of the entire conversation regarding this matter. I have blacked out other's names and social media profile pictures to protect other's. He is a full bred Lhasa Apso with a big personality and a lot of spirit. Jax will turn 15 years old on November 17th. I would absolutely adopt another puppy from Patience after having Jax in our lives for so long. I was actually on their website looking when I realized I could provide a terrific review. Jax is an amazing companion and I just love him so much. I look forward to contacting Patience soon to learn what pups are available. Dirty Monkey 28 Oct 21 Purchased my mini schnauzer and very happy with purchase great people and family helpful with all of our questions would definitely go again all the dogs looked happy and healthy making it easy to purchase. Let's take a closer look at the key information and facts surrounding this breed. Origin The Silky Poo is an artificially created breed. Breeders worked to mix a standard Poodle with the Silky Terrier breed. This created a unique breed that is smart, sheds little and yet is a quality lapdog. Size The Silky Poo stands around fourteen inches tall and 12 to 16 pounds. This makes it one of the bigger designer dogs you will find in the canine world. They tend to have little dandruff and are therefore hypoallergenic. Having said this, the ultimate grooming needs are largely dependant on the genes of which genetic parent win out in the game of reproduction. Having said this, Silky Poos are generally considered to be a fairly low maintenance breed from a grooming perspective. Character This breed is known for being a bit divided in its character and temperament. These pups are known to be very energetic and curious during the day much like a Poodle. During the evening, however, they are thought to calm down and act more as a traditional lapdog with their owners. The exact attitude of the pup really depends on the specific litter, so make sure to consult with the breeder to know what to expect for a specific puppy. Training Needs The Silky Poo is more difficult to train then other dogs. Although smart as a, well, Poodle, the dog is also known for being fairly stubborn. The dog can be trained, but you need to stick with it, be consistent with your commands and be positive. Treat training is known to be very effective with this breed. Activity Level The Silky Poo is an active breed that loves to run and play during the day. Unlike other lapdogs, you need to take this pup out on a walk and let them play around with other pups in dog parks and such. If you do not, the pent up energy can turn into destructive behavior particularly when the dog is bored. This is why we have provided this guide to provide you with all the information you need to know to care for this fascinating dog breed. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Poolky Puppies A post shared by Michelle Mordike esmethepoolky If you are looking for a dog that acts and looks similar to the Silky Terrier and Poodle, then the Poolky is a great mixture of both dog breeds. Before purchasing a Poolky puppy, it is worth taking a look around at local rescues to check if they have Poolky puppies available for adoption. Many rescues and shelters will have a wide range of dog breeds to choose from. Furthermore, the Poolky puppy can be purchased from a breeder or pet store. This is a rare dog breed, hence the little-known information about them. It can be difficult to come across a Poolky puppy, but rescues will generally have them up for adoption. Beware of any potential scammers within the breeding industry. Many backyard breeders will claim that they are selling a Poolky puppy when it could potentially be a Poodle with dog-friendly dyes. This is a common incident that happens within the Poolky breeder community, so it is best to purchase a Poolky puppy from a reputable breeder with lots of positive reviews. This makes them ideal for families with children and other pets alike. The Poolky can easily be socialized with children from a young age, yet they make the perfect gentle companions for senior owners. Not only can this dog adapt to different household requirements, but their timid and sociable nature allows them to please owners of all ages. You will find that your Poolky is willing to be left alone, adapting to a more independent and quieter lifestyle. The Poolky is small and delicate, with no desire to hunt other animals. This dog was not bred for hunting or game retrieval, which makes them ideal for families with other pets. These other pets can include animals such as cats, rodents, and birds as long as each pet has a protected area. Poolkies are curious and always eager to explore certain areas of the house. Even though they may not have the instinct to hunt down smaller prey, it does not mean rodents and birds should not be protected and secured in a cage and separate room. It is easy to introduce other similar-sized dog breeds and cats to the Poolky. They will be curious at first and bark and sniff the unfamiliar addition to the family, but they will soon become accustomed to them and tolerate their presence even when left alone. This makes them easy to feed and their staple diet should include ingredients that are good for their coat health. This is dog breed has the potential to become obese with the wrong type of diet. Since they are not overly active dogs, they do not require a high-protein diet in comparison to other more energetic dog breeds. Avoid feeding your Poolky foods high in fillers and fats, because they are unhealthy and can contribute to their weight gain. Your Poolky should be fed two to three small meals a day in a controlled manner. The food should be of high quality, and any treats should be low in fat and fed infrequently. However, they are not very agile due to their small legs and unbalanced stature. Poolkies seem to adore their toys and they are always willing to play a game of tug and war or go on a short walk in the evening with their owners. Avoid over-exercising your Poolky, as it can be damaging to their small bodies. Moderate exercise will suffice and keep your Poolky in good shape. A post shared by Brandon Yow brandonn. Your Poolky can be taught a range of tricks, such as sit, stay, or follow. They can also be potty-trained, which is a bonus if you prefer a hygienic dog. This dog is smart, but they do require lots of treats and praise to complete a task while it is still being taught. This can be done at home or at a salon, where they should be brushed and bathed to keep their coat looking healthy and shiny. Their fur is at risk of becoming matted if brushing is neglected, and in some cases, the knots will have to be cut out. Their nails should also be trimmed at a salon to keep them at a healthy length so that your Poolky does not have to experience the discomfort of long, unkept nails. Overall, their coat is manageable and regular brushing are most important.

But with a plethora of options available, choosing the right harness can be a challenging task. A great french bulldog harness is necessary for Adult Frenchie to avoid damaging the spine, causing ivdd. Frenchie Brand Dog Harness Factors to Consider when Choosing a French Bulldog Harness Several factors play a crucial role in choosing the perfect french bulldog harness for your canine companion. Reflective strips for visibility can also be a valuable addition. Pros and Cons of Harnesses Front Clip Harnesses These days all french bulldog harnesses have both front and back clips. This feature is particularly beneficial for dogs that tend to pull on the leash. Reduces pulling: When a dog pulls, the front clip will cause them to turn around towards you, discouraging the pulling behavior. Not suitable for short-snouted dog breeds: Dog Breeds such as pugs and french bulldogs can have issues with front clip harnesses as the pressure may be too close to their throat, causing breathing difficulties. Back Clip Harnesses Again, now most french bulldog harnesses have both front and back clips. Easy to clip your French bulldogs into car seats, upping the safety factor Cons: Less control: If your french bulldogs are pullers, a back-clip harness might not be the best option as it provides less control than a front-clip one. Can encourage pulling: Some dogs might feel like pulling more when the leash is attached to their back, triggering their instinct to oppose the pulling pressure. You can attach the leash at the front for training or behavior correction, and at the back when just casually walking. Cons: Complexity: These harnesses can be a bit more complex to fit and adjust correctly. Step-In Harnesses Pros: Easy to wear: Your dog only needs to step into the harness, making it a good choice for dogs that are uncomfortable with harnesses sliding over their head. Cons: Less secure: Some step-in harnesses may not provide the same level of security and may come off more easily than other types. Padded Harnesses Pros: Extra comfort: The additional padding can provide more comfort for dogs, especially those with short hair or sensitive skin. Cons: Heat retention: The extra material might make your french bulldogs warmer, which may not be ideal in hot climates or for breeds prone to overheating. Try a cooling vest in summer when using this style! Remember, every french bulldog is unique, and their comfort is paramount. French Bulldog Harness Material Dog harnesses come in a variety of materials — nylon, polyester, and leather, to name a few. Each material has its own pros and cons. Nylon French Bulldog Harnesses: Durability: Nylon is known for its strength and can withstand rough use. Variety: They come in various colors and designs. Easy to Clean: Most nylon harnesses are machine washable. Cons: Can cause rubbing: In some dogs, particularly those with short hair or sensitive skin, nylon harnesses can cause chafing. Leather Harnesses: Durability: Leather harnesses are robust and long-lasting. Aesthetic appeal: They have a luxurious and classic look. Cons: Cost: Leather harnesses tend to be more expensive. Maintenance: They require regular cleaning and conditioning to keep the leather from drying out and cracking. A harness that is too tight can cause discomfort and restricted movement, while one that is too loose may not provide adequate control and can even be a safety hazard if your dog manages to slip out of it. Pros of a Well-Fitted French Bulldog Harness: Comfort: A well-fitted french bulldog harness ensures that your french bulldogs are comfortable during walks. May irritate skin. Risk of Escaping: A loose french bulldog harness might not provide adequate control, and your french bulldogs could potentially slip out. When buying a harness, look for one with adjustable straps that can be altered to get a perfect fit. Harness Training Tips for Your French Bulldogs Training your new French Bulldog Puppy to use a harness might require some time and patience, but the benefits are worth the effort. Getting your new French bulldog puppy accustomed to a new harness might take some time and patience. Start slow, let your bulldog puppy wear the harness for short periods initially. Reward them for their cooperation with treats and positive reinforcement. Collars are not recommended for regular use until at least 7 months of age. The trachea of the french bulldog puppy is still forming. Improper use of collars and putting pressure on the french bulldogs neck and throat can cause serious damage. However a breakaway collar with a bell is smart, allowing you to hear the puppy, for the puppy to get used to the feeling of a collar, and it still allows you the ability to show a sense of style. Never leave french bulldog puppies unattended with collars and harnesses on. Starting with the French Bulldog Harness: Introduction: Let your french bulldog dog sniff and explore the new harness. Reward their curiosity with treats. Adjustment: Place the harness on your french bulldog without fastening it. Give treats and praise during this process to create positive associations. Short Sessions: Begin with short sessions of having the harness on. Gradually increase the duration as your french bulldog dog gets comfortable. Walks: Start going for short walks. Use treats and praises as reinforcement. Remember, every french bulldog is unique, and what works for one might not work for another. Patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement are the keys to successful harness training. I know of a few companies that do! Red Dingo and Ruffwear. We prefer the over the head harness versus the step in harness. When looking at over the head harnesses, make sure to look for one with adjustable straps. French Bulldog heads can be huge and hard to get over, but once over the head, the harness can be extremely loose. Adjustable straps will make it easy to put on but securable for proper fitting. These can also be adjusted as the new french bulldog puppy grows! You will want to measure your frenchie puppy before going shopping for a puppy harness. You can find these at your local drug store or Walmart. Whether your french bulldog is small, medium, or large, you should use the same methods to measure them. To fit your french bulldog dog for a harness, you need two measurements: the neck and the chest. When measuring the neck, wrap the tape measure just below the narrow part where she normally wears a collar. The correct spot to measure will be right above them. When measuring the chest, take care to fit the tape measure around the widest part. Weight can also be a factor in finding the correct size. In addition to measurements, there are other factors that should also influence your purchase. Some harnesses are styled to fit certain body types better than others. The Ruffwear Front Range Harness is a great option for french bulldogs of all ages. Our lb french bulldogs fit in XS, lb french bulldogs fit in Small, and french bulldog pups easily fit in xxs. These french bulldog harnesses are all machine washable. The Red Dingo and Ruffwear have adjustment points, front clip, and padding. These two are my favorite. The Gooby harness is a mesh harness with an adjustable belly strap. This one is great for tiny french bulldog puppies. Kitten Collars Bells are helpful so you can hear your new french bulldog puppy beneath your feet. They come with bells and break away if the puppy should become stuck or strangled. If you are purchasing a new collar because your dog has out-grown its current collar, simply select the next size up from your measurement findings. Measure twice, buy once. But not every home has a soft tape measure. Or just take your string with you to the store! Add 1 — 2 inches to the initial measurement to give extra breathing room and comfort if the dog grows or gains weight. There are a bunch of companies that make fashionable Bulldog specific products. Check out Etsy and Facebook! Conclusion Selecting the right type of harness for your dog is crucial for their comfort, safety, and your peace of mind. As Frenchie owners, you can now feel confident during your shopping experience! FAQs How do I know the right size of the harness for my dog? Can a harness stop my dog from pulling? Training is the most effective way to stop pulling. Can my new french bulldog puppy wear a harness? Yes, but ensure it is the correct size and is adjusted properly to not impede their growth. Is a harness better than a collar? A harness provides better control and evenly distributes pressure, reducing the risk of injury. However, some well-behaved dogs may be comfortable with a collar. Pet parents often have a hard time picking out a new french bulldog puppy harness and collar for their puppy. Dont forget to subscribe and follow on socials! Check Price 3. They are popular among Frenchie parents due to their ease of use and the fact that French Bulldogs usually adjust to them easily. French Bulldogs can wear a variety of harnesses to ensure their comfort and safety Features to Consider When Choosing a French Bulldog Harness Keeping your Frenchie safe and comfortable during walks and other activities is easy with the right French Bulldog harness. Get the wrong one, and you risk your dog slipping out or not wanting to wear it. Here are things to look out for when shopping for French Bulldog harnesses to get one that is perfect for your dog: 1. Materials The material used in making a harness determines how comfortable your dog will feel when wearing it. Therefore, you should only consider French Bulldog harnesses made with high-quality materials like cotton, nylon, and leather. You may need to try different materials to find the most comfortable one for your dog. Breathability Due to the structure of their flat face, Frenchies are more susceptible to breathing problems and, by extension, overheating than other dog breeds. When choosing the best harness for your French Bulldog, ensure that you opt for one that allows plenty of ventilation. This eliminates the risk of your dog suffering a heatstroke. Therefore, consider getting a harness with plenty of padding, especially around the chest and belly, to provide your dog extra comfort and safety. Adequate padding helps prevent rubbing or digging into the skin, reducing the risk of injuries and discomfort while wearing the harness. Attachment points Harnesses come with the leash attachment point on the front, back, or both. When choosing the best French Bulldog harness, you should note where its leash attachment points are, as that determines how much control you will have over your dog when walking them. Harnesses with front leash attachment offer more control than harnesses with back leash attachment. Reflective features This is optional but highly recommended if you intend to walk your Frenchie at night. Harnesses with reflective features, such as reflective strips or stitching, help to make your dog visible to motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians in low-light conditions, reducing the risk of accidents. Finding the Right Fit for Your French Bulldog Before purchasing a French Bulldog harness, it is important to measure them first to ensure you get one that fits them correctly. Use a measuring tape Weight-based sizing can be misleading when shopping for the perfectly fitted French Bulldog harness. Although it can provide a general indication, it is not always accurate. Be sure to note the width of the chest at its widest point, typically an inch or two away from the armpits. If your Frenchie is a puppy, you can add an extra 3 inches to the recorded chest dimensions to allow room for growth. Weigh them Weighing your Frenchie is another step in selecting the perfect harness size. While it can be challenging to make them stand still, an easier way to do it is by carrying your dog and stepping onto the scales to obtain your combined weight. After taking note of the combined weight, place the dog back down and weigh yourself alone. Selecting the perfect harness for your Frenchie becomes much easier if you accurately measure their chest, neck, and weight. The tutorial video above provides a good visual guide on how to measure your pup for a harness. For the neck, measure around the widest part, usually right below where the collar sits. For the chest, measure around the broadest part, which is typically right behind the front legs. Always remember to check the fit regularly as your French Bulldog puppy grows, adjusting the harness or upgrading to a larger size when needed. Thus, a harness with a secure buckle system is a must to prevent any possible escape attempts. However, it is an essential part of their overall training and care. For this process to be as smooth as possible, there are a few tips that you can follow: 1. Gradual introduction Some French Bulldogs might find harnesses scary and may not want to have anything to do with them. If your Frenchie is one such dog, you can help them get comfortable by slowly introducing them to the harness. Allow them to sniff and inspect the harness before putting it on them. Positive reinforcement Positive reinforcement is one of the most effective tools to teach French Bulldogs acceptable behaviors. Be sure to reward your Frenchie with treats, praise, and attention when they show interest or interact with the harness. Gradually work towards putting the harness on them and reward them for wearing it without fuss. Patience and persistence Your Frenchie may not be excited about wearing a harness and could even throw a fit. However, this should not make you frustrated or cause you to give up on their training. Instead, take small steps each day and continue to reinforce positive behavior. This is important because if your dog experiences pain whenever they wear it, they would naturally resist wearing harnesses. You must also inspect the harness for damages and replace it if necessary. Finding the ideal harness for a French Bulldog puppy is slightly different than choosing one for an adult Frenchie. Given their smaller size and growing nature, harnesses for French Bulldog puppies should have some key attributes. First, opt for a harness that has a fully adjustable chest and neck area. This adaptability not only ensures that the harness fits your pup perfectly but also accommodates their rapid growth. Second, a good puppy harness should be lightweight and soft on the skin to avoid any unnecessary discomfort or chafing. For French Bulldog puppies, a harness with a broad chest piece is beneficial.
