I have had one of my chocolate girls turn completely Lavender on her body but not the head, then within a year, go completely back to dark chocolate. So, like a good Boy Scout, when you purchase a chocolate Labradoodle, be prepared for anything! All are lovely, but they are almost impossible to predict with any significant degree of accuracy. Once again, be prepared for anything! Chocolate Colors Now we get to the fun part; the color combinations! This is where things get interesting. Partis can come in any color, with either color nose. Some are mostly white, while some have lots of color and less white. The ones that are mostly white are called "Extreme" Partis. The variations are endless and unique, like a snowflake. The colors, such as chocolate, on a parti can change in the same ways that they would on a solid dog. Often confused with "Parti" is a dog with heavy white mismarks or a Tuxedo. White mismarks can be very small or very heavy, or anywhere in-between. The puppy is born either Black or Chocolate and immediately begins to lose the dark color, revealing anything from a cream to a red underneath! The tips of the fur may retain their dark cast, but the dog will present as somewhere on the cream-red spectrum. I have included her picture below showing her in the middle of the changing process. The genetics of color are absolutely fascinating! Finding a brown and white Labradoodle puppy The brown and white Labradoodle coat color is rather rare and studying the genetics behind this color pattern might make your head spin a little at first. But learning about this topic will also make you appreciate your beautifully unique Labradoodle even more! What is a Brown and White Labradoodle? The brown and white Labradoodle is a hybrid or crossbred dog breed that carries genes from both the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle dog breeds. In the case of Australian Labradoodles, Cocker Spaniels and several other dog breeds can also have a genetic influence. Brown and White Labradoodle Pattern Types Most brown and white Labradoodles will be classified as parti-colored, or approximately 50 percent brown with 50 percent white. Here, keep in mind that different Labradoodle breeders may use different terminology to describe what is essentially the same coat coloration. And not all Labradoodle breeders will break down the color percentages in as much detail as what you are about to read here. But for your general knowledge, these are the main terms you can expect to run across as you research the brown and white Labradoodle coat. True Parti True parti, also just called parti, refers to a brown and white Labradoodle with a bi-color coat where each color is represented in generally equal parts. Phantom A phantom brown and white Labradoodle coat starts with a single solid brown color base and then shows clearly defined markings in some or all of the following areas: Face On each side of the muzzle In a bowtie formation across the chin and chest On all four legs On all four feet The white portions of the coat must also be less than 50 percent of the total coat color. Not all Labradoodle breeders agree about what a true phantom coat looks like. In some cases, a breeder may call a phantom coat one where only brown and black colors are present. In this case, a coat where white is also present would be called a Phantom Parti. To make naming matters even less clear-cut, the tri-color coat that some breeders will call a Phantom Parti other breeders will call a Tri-color, Multi-color or Multi-pattern coat. Abstract An abstract brown and white Labradoodle will have brown predominating in the coat and the remainder less than 50 percent of the coat white. There is no uniform specification as to where the white markings must occur. Extreme Parti An extreme parti brown and white Labradoodle will have white as the dominant coat color. With accents of brown that can be located anywhere but are often located on the face or ears. Mismarks Mismarks refers to a coat color where the white markings are present, but do not conform to any of the other coat color patterns that have already been mentioned. White mismarks can occur with any base coat color, including brown. While mismarks in general are fairly common. However, two types of mismarks are sufficiently rare to be worth singling out for mention: Irish Spotting and Tuxedo. Irish Spotting The first of these rare mismarks is called Irish spotting. The amount of white can be pronounced or minimal. Tuxedo Mismarks An even rarer and more prized mismark is the tuxedo. As you are probably already imagining, the tuxedo mismark is a pronounced patch of white that appears on the chest. It then snakes up and around the back of the neck just like a tuxedo vest. Tuxedo mismarks often include white patches on the paws and face as well. Multi-Pattern A multi-pattern, multi-color or tri-color also called phantom parti coat will include a base color, a second color and white. In the case of a multi-pattern brown and white Labradoodle, what this would look like is a base coat color of brown with a secondary lighter brown color the phantom part and then white mismarks the tri or multi color part. Multi-Pattern Sable Last but not least, there is the multi-pattern sable coat color pattern. Here, the Labradoodle will have everything we just described in the previous section about the multi-pattern coat color plus the sable coat pattern. The sable coat pattern, in case you are not familiar, causes the tips of each hair to turn black. Sable is a coat pattern that tends to emerge over time and can sometimes cause the coat to strikingly change color as the Labradoodle grows up. Brown and White Labradoodle Genetics Now you know that a brown and white Labradoodle coat can look quite different depending on the amount of each color the coat contains. One brown and white Labradoodle may be categorized as a true parti coat while another brown and white Labradoodle may have white mismarks, an extreme parti or even an abstract coat color pattern. Each is actually quite rare. So rare, in fact, that it is often said no two brown and white Labradoodle coats will ever look exactly alike. All dogs have two basic pigments: black and red eumelanin and pheomelanin. Different genes will act on these pigments to produce every dog pattern and color we see in breeds today, including the lovely brown and white coat pattern. Labradoodle coat colors can change quite dramatically from puppyhood through young adulthood. Sometimes this happens more than once as the puppy grows up. Not surprisingly, this trait can make it challenging for even an experienced and genetically savvy Labradoodle breeder to accurately predict exactly what each puppy will grow up to look like. The most common coat color change is a lightening of the base coat color. A commonly cited secondary change is the development of highlights when the coat is repeatedly exposed to ultraviolet light sunlight. For example, a Labradoodle may be born with a very dark brown coat. As the dog grows up, white patches begin to appear. At the same time, the dark brown base color begins to progressively lighten. Before you know it, you are looking at a brown and white Labradoodle! Brown and White Labradoodle Temperament Like their coat color, the temperament traits that Labradoodle puppies will inherit from their parents is impossible to predict. Luckily, the Lab and Poodle parent breeds are relatively similar, so we have a general idea of what you can expect. Brown and white Labradoodle puppies will be just as friendly, energetic, and intelligent as any other color. But, take a look at the specific dogs being bred to see how your puppy might turn out. As long as you socialize and train your doodle pup from a young age, they will be friendly, affectionate, and loyal to you. This breed is best trained with positive reward methods, as they are eager to please and most often very food-motivated. They do best in active families with plenty of time to spend with them. If left alone for too long, or too often, they can develop separation anxiety. And, if not exercised properly, they can display destructive behaviors like barking, digging, and more. In this article, we shed some light, rather than hair, on the rainbow world of Poodle colors, exploring the most common coat hues and patterns before delving deeper into the weird yet wonderful world of ticked and parti Poodles. Table of Contents 12 Common Solid Colors of the Poodle Most Poodles, regardless of size, come in solid colors, some of which are more common than others. Although black Poodles are often overlooked in favor of lighter-colored puppies or rescues, they are no more aggressive or less intelligent than any other color Poodle. There is one slight health discrepancy, however, in that studies have found that black and other dark-colored Poodles are more susceptible to squamous cell carcinoma of the digit SCDD than other lighter-colored dogs. Due to their poor visibility at night, these dogs should always wear an LED collar when getting walked in the dark. Some may take a year to develop the blue tinge to their coats, while others hang onto the vestiges of their puppyhood black for 24 months. A quick examination of their paws may also reveal some silver or white hairs between the pads. As a blue Poodle puppy ages, so its color clears, becoming almost gun-metal grey. Some shading is acceptable in blue Poodles, but to be true to the breed standard, they should, like the black Poodle, have black noses, dark eyes, and black toenails. Silver Another diluted version of the black Poodle, like the blues, silvers are born black but will start to clear much earlier. By the time they reach six weeks, silver hues will be apparent around the face and paws, with the rest of the coat following suit over the next year or so. Silver is recessive color, making it more difficult to breed for, and silver puppies are only really guaranteed if both parents are also silver Poodles. This process is caused by the Progressive Graying gene which is found in some black, blue, and brown Poodles. Although some Poodles are born gray and remain that way throughout their lives, others will start to change color at around two or three months of age, gradually fading as they mature. Regardless of how the gray coat is produced this color is recognized by the AKC. Like the black, blue, and silver Poodles, gray dogs should also have black noses and nails and dark-colored eyes. Cream Cream is one of several off-white colorations found in all sizes of Poodle, and distinguishing one from another can be challenging. A cream Poodle is fairly easy to identify as it is one of the few light-colored Poodles that have black rather than liver-colored noses. Establishing whether a Poodle is white or cream is more difficult as both have black points and a pale cream, in certain lights, may appear white. Experts will no doubt dismiss this confusion as pure ignorance as the two are very different. While white indicates the complete absence of color, the cream is a very diluted brown, not far from apricot. Indeed, many cream-colored Poodles are born light or even medium brown and then clear as they mature. White White is one of the most popular and most common colors for Poodles. Despite being white, a white Poodle belongs to the black hair type and therefore has a black nose, nails, and eye-rims, as well as dark-colored eyes, giving it a striking appearance. In the past, a white Poodle with pink toenails or a patch of pink skin would still have succeeded in the show ring but, these days, the AKC insists on white Poodles with black extremities only. This color needs to be washed with a special shampoo for Poodles often to stay bright and clean. Both the Toy and the Miniature Poodle carry this trait, however, and it does appear to affect those with white pigmentation more than other colors. Brown Once lumped together with Red Poodles, brown Poodles should ideally be the color of dark mahogany or a rich walnut brown, as opposed to chestnut. Nevertheless, brown Poodles boast more color variations and a wider range of hues than almost any of the other colors. Most brown Poodles are born dark and then fade as they mature, producing stunning shades of cinnamon brown and coffee. One of the biggest problems facing the brown Poodle is its tendency to have very pale yellow, almost green eyes. This is an undesirable trait in the show ring but difficult to eliminate in breeding. The most sought-after brown Poodles have amber-colored eyes, a liver nose, and dark toenails, as per the breed standard. Rufus is a recessive allele, which is perhaps why red Poodles are so rare. Red Poodles are particularly prone to color change, with some fading as they age and others darkening. Apricot Like red, apricot is a relatively new color for Poodles, having only been accepted into the breed standard comparatively recently. The first apricot-colored Standard Poodle was born in but categorized as liver at the time. Since then, apricot Poodles have won a variety of prestigious awards, and their popularity has continued. Last year, world-famous Lionel Messi welcomed an apricot Toy Poodle named Abu into his family, adding a splash of color and cuteness to the Messi tribe. Although Poodles of this color may look similar to red ones, the cafe au lait hue is closer to silver than red. Silver Beige Unlike cafe au lait, silver beige is a diluted shade of brown, and most silver beige Poodles are born brown, clearing around their face and paws within the first six weeks of life. Silver beige is much more popular than cafe au lait, but the two are frequently confused. While cafe au lait puppies are usually born that color, silver beige Poodles are born brown and subsequently fade to silver beige. Parti Poodles Parti Poodles have large amounts of white on their body. This can be mixed with any of the regular colors: red, black, brown etc. These dogs are highly sought-after. You will probably have to look for a bit in order to find the Parti Poodle of your dreams! This is produced by a specific gene and can even be seen in pure white Poodles that, if they have the ticking gene, will appear dirty. More of a marking than a color in its own right, it can be difficult to spot the spots on a Poodle puppy. More commonly found on parti Poodles than solid colors, ticking becomes increasingly obvious as the puppy matures. While the United Kennel Club sees ticking as an acceptable trait in a Poodle, the AKC disqualifies such dogs from conformation classes, as it does parti Poodles. Some Poodle owners are convinced that certain colored dogs are cleverer than others. The idea behind this theory is that black and white Poodles were the original breed standard colors and have therefore been bred for temperament and intelligence, rather than color. You may indeed have a particularly intelligent white Poodle at some stage in your life, but you could equally have an Einstein-style Tuxedo Poodle. Erica begins her day with a quick hands-on inspection of all the babies. She gives medication, routine wormers and vaccines. Erica weighs and individually identifies each puppy with different colors of fingernail polish the day they are born. For three weeks all our Standard Poodle puppies are weighed every day. All of that attention to babies must have affected her, because in early , Erica gave birth to a beautiful baby girl that looks like a china doll. Her name is Kaelyn. The answer is yes. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recognizes this as a canine mental illness and its symptoms are much like those experienced by humans. Why Does This Happen? There are many reasons why a dog may be depressed. Most common are: A dog loses his owner or one of their owners A dog loses his canine playmate Moving to a new home may cause stress and depression for a Boxer dog A dog may act depressed while his owner is away for the day and then bounce back with energy when he is finally greeted at the end of the day. This type of short cycle depression falls under Separation Anxiety. A chemical imbalance may cause a dog to be clinically depressed. Symptoms Most owners know right away that their dog is depressed. Dogs "will not be themselves" and they will not only act down, but also in a lot of cases they will actually look sad with droopy eyes and a loss of expression on the face. There are 3 basic behavior changes that an owner will notice. A dog may mourn just as a human does. In these cases, time is what cures most cases. If a dog does not show signs of bouncing back and has a severe lack of appetite, medical intervention is necessary. It does not take long for a dog to develop malnutrition or to become dehydrated. In the beginning stages, it may help a dog to have a piece of clothing or other object that has the scent of the person or canine friend whom they are missing. In middle stages, introducing your dog to a new playmate usually helps. Spending time together will help the dog bond with closer with their main caretaker. Moving to a New Home This can be upsetting and stressful to everyone, both human and dog; particularly if the move was forced and not wanted. For example, if their dog food was always in the far right hand corner of the kitchen, place it in the far right hand corner of the new kitchen. Taking time to walk the dog around the year each day can help give the dog a sense of their property and where they belong. Spending time together will help, even if your dog is mopey. Introducing new toys, trying to teach new commands or just cuddling together to great a stronger bond will be helpful. A dog may become depressed or they may start to have behavioral problems such as barking all day or being destructive. There are several things that you can do. Preparing a comfortable, fun area. Dogs that are left alone all day should not be crated, confined to a small area or left to roam an empty home. Gating off 1 room is helpful. You will want to have specific areas for: Food if they are still young enough to need daytime meals Water Thick blankets or canine bed to comfortably rest on Lots of dog toys. For this type of Separation Anxiety behavior, interactive dog toys which hold treats inside work best. These types of toys allow you to hide a treat inside and a dog will spend hours trying to release the yummy treat that they smell. Be sure to spend a weekend day listening to that radio station or channel, so that you can be sure there are no loud shows that come on or any disturbing noises. Choose a station or channel with soothing, calm voices. Getting a Playmate for Your Dog's Depression? Many owners wonder if they should get a 2nd dog as a playmate for a dog who is lonely during the day. This will help a dog. However, this is also a big responsibility for you. You will have double the dog expenses and need to go through the steps of training and so forth. If you can handle a 2nd dog, studies do show that a dog is happier when with an animal of the same species and breed. For example, a dog will most love to have another Boxer dog, and would not be as happy with a cat brought into the home. When bringing a 2nd dog into the home as a playmate for your Boxer, it is best understand that dogs will always need to have 1 Alpha dog. This is usually the older dog and usually the one who has been in the home the longest. It stresses dogs if they must figure out on their own who the Alpha Dog is…the struggle can last for years and cause behavioral issues. You can help by identifying who the Alpha dog will be and training the dogs appropriately. To clarify, canine depression is actually a thing, and all breeds including boxers can suffer from it. Researchers have proven that dogs can experience a wide range of emotions from happiness, sadness, jealousy, fear, anger, and even depression. And surprisingly enough, this helps us out a lot. Many of the signs and causes of canine depression are very similar to the ones that we experience. Important note: Everything must be taken into context. Hiding and avoiding A common sign that indicated canine depression is frequently hiding away from the main focal point of the house. Especially considering boxers usually love nothing more than to be right at the heart of any action or activity. Not wanting to play games with you or barely reacting to when you call them is a common sign of canine depression. The same goes for canine depression too. If your boxer is feeling particularly down or depressed he may start refusing food. The same goes for your boxer too. If your boxer has been very active, then sleeping more is likely justified, but sleeping excessively is something to be wary of. Pacifying behaviors Engaging in pacifying behaviors can indicate your boxer is depressed, stressed, or feeling anxious in general. The most common pacifying behavior seen in dogs is excessively licking their paws. Other potential pacifying behaviors are excessively licking or biting other parts of the body, or even scratching. Identifying whether your boxer really has depression or not, relies on witnessing multiple signs and a good cause. If in doubt, always call your veterinarian for a health check-up to be on the safe side. Grieving the loss of another pet or family member Humans and canines alike go through a grieving period when a pet or someone close has been lost. In fact, studies show that the canine grieving period can be a lot longer than it is with us. Addition of another pet or family member The complete opposite of losing a pet or family member is gaining one! And this too can cause your Boxer to react negatively. The addition of a pet, new baby or partner, could lead to some level of jealously and feeling left out. This is likely down to the fact that dogs are highly in-tune with their survival instincts, and often react unpredictably when things change around them. Dogs really do mirror the way we feel and act. Insufficient exercise or stimulation Boxers are highly energetic and need sufficient stimulation both physical and mental in order to be happy, calm, and well-behaved. When left understimulated boxers can react in a range of negative ways including bad behavior, destructive behavior, aloofness, aggression , stress, anxiety, and depression. Ways to keep Boxers entertained and stimulated 6. Being left home alone too much If your Boxer spends many hours home alone every day this can certainly lead to anxiety and depression. Dogs are social animals and do not like being left alone. Some breeds are more sensitive to this than others, and Boxers are definitely on the sensitive side.
