Put simply, here are the basics to use the Ignore method of training: You ignore the behavior that you want to stop or reduce. On the flip side, you give attention to the behavior you want to encourage. The hard bit is ignoring a very intelligent German Shepherd who is persistent! Give your German Shepherd a job at home so they stay entertained. This represents big challenges as a German Shepherd owner. You must be smarter than your dog! But the jobs can be as easy or difficult as you have the time and energy to train. This is not a mentally lazy dog, but a breed with extremely high intelligence and a huge breadth of application for that intelligence. This can easily be accomplished by investing in a crate or exercise pen. This also provides a safe place for your puppy to sleep and helps with potty training. But another great way to keep your eyes on your puppy, which can also help during potty training, is to keep your pup leashed or tethered to you in the house. Leashing your dog inside will reinforce your bond, keep your puppy safe, and alert you when they start sniffing around to go potty. Durable, nontoxic plastic and rubber toys and treat puzzles can help keep your busy puppy occupied and out of trouble. Skip the puppy varieties, these pups can go straight to the heavy duty adult ones. The varieties that have raised bumps on them seem to be the favorites around here. Kong toys are also good, and can be stuffed with their ground raw food, organic plain full fat yogurt, or other tasty treats, then frozen to make a nice pacifier to keep them occupied. And soft toys or rope type toys should be used only under supervision as it's easy for a puppy to destroy and ingest pieces of these. We don't recommend rawhides for the same reason, also many rawhides are somewhat toxic. Bedding- puppies go through definite chewing phases, so an expensive fluffy bed is generally not a great investment in the beginning. In addition, there will likely be accidents as your pup transitions to their new home with you. So a towel or soft small blanket that's easily washable in the crate works well until your pup is mature enough to handle something nicer.
