He was placed with one of our seasoned Hospice fosters as we were not sure of his prognosis, or how much time we would even have with this special little guy, but we knew he needed around the clock care. Lifespan Sociability Deciding to add a new puppy to your home is not a decision you should take lightly. These dogs have plenty of energy but can also be challenging in terms of training. You must socialize them extremely well as puppies to avoid them becoming overly wary of strangers as adults. They can also be a touch stubborn, thanks to their Terrier heritage. It takes an experienced eye to pick up when your dog is starting to switch off and change up your commands accordingly. This is especially true with a less well-known cross such as the English Bull Terrier. You could get a pup that looks like their English Bulldog parent but with the personality of a Bull Terrier, or vice versa! You might even end up with a puppy who seems like a fairly even mix of both parent breeds in terms of both appearance and temperament. The most important thing when looking at getting a hybrid breed puppy is to familiarize yourself with both parent breeds and make sure you like everything about each of them. The tenacious and powerful nature of both these breeds meant that they were brave enough to take on a much larger foe. Bull Terriers came about by crossing the slower English Bulldog with Terrier breeds, in an attempt to create a powerful yet quick dog with spirit. Both breeds have been in the U. While the Bulldog is now the more popular of the two breeds by a significant margin, the Bull Terrier was the first to be accepted into the American Kennel Club. They were recognized as a breed by the AKC in and were the 13th breed to be placed on its books. The Bulldog was accepted into the American Kennel Club in , as their 26th breed. This means their owners need to be experienced at training dogs or happy to work with a professional for extra guidance. They can have a territorial streak and will take it upon themselves to protect their families if they are not properly socialized from a young age. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Any family will need to make sure that they place a high priority on training an English Bull Terrier right from the start. They can be a little too big and bulky for very old or young family members, as their exuberance may knock people and objects flying. Remember the fighting instinct of both parent breeds, and know that care will need to be taken with small pets, especially any that would run away rather than stand their ground. Free feeding this breed is not a good idea, as they will eat everything in sight rather than self-regulate. Another issue that can affect English Bull Terriers with shorter noses is that they cannot swim well , so they should never be allowed around bodies of water without being constantly monitored. These are the most common health conditions to affect the English Bulldog and the Bull Terrier. Minor Conditions. While they make great pets, English Bull Terriers are known for being challenging at times. Like all dogs, any training and socialising will need to start early and be consistent. English Bull Terriers suit active families really well as they have high energy levels and love human company. They are great for experienced owners who have the patience to train them. Common health problems in English Bull Terriers Despite their great personalities, like many purebred dogs English Bull Terriers have health problems linked to their breed. There is currently testing and screening for some of the problems Bull Terriers can have. Often, Breed Clubs will also be able to provide advice on what tests your breed may need and where to get these done. Make sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening to reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by these upsetting conditions. If you want to minimise the risk of your dog getting problems due to exaggerated features, you can read our advice on choosing a pedigree dog. Some common health conditions English Bull Terriers develop include: Deafness — where dogs are born without hearing. Lethal acrodermatitis — a genetic disease that causes fatal skin and growth problems. Kidney problems — urine tests can screen parents for this. Heart problems — heart scans can screen parents for heart valve problems. Luxating patellas — where the kneecaps slip temporarily out of place. Before breeding parents can be checked by a vet for this. Atopy — allergies causing itchy skin and ear infections. Caring for your English Bull Terrier Bull terriers can be a great addition if you're looking for a canine companion. They are very lively and like to have company as much as possible, so you'll need to make sure you're around for a good portion of the day. English Bull Terriers and barking Like all dogs, Bull Terriers are likely to make a bit of noise every now and again. How much noise your dog makes will be down to their individual personality. Training and socialisation You will need to be firm but fair with your Bull Terrier as they can have a strong-willed nature. Training needs to be ongoing and everyone who looks after your Bull Terrier will need to follow the same rules. Your Bull Terrier will need at least one hour of exercise a day. Giving them a brush once a week should be enough to keep their coat looking healthy and shiny. Check with your vet as it may be worth regular ear cleaning to prevent problems if your dog is at risk. English Bull Terriers and other pets Some Bull Terriers can be nervous or even aggressive around other dogs if not socialised, which is why socialising them well and early is so important. A well-socialised Bull Terrier is likely to be more relaxed around other dogs. If your dog has grown up with another pet in the home from a young age they can get on well with them. Your vet will be able to tell you how much your dog should be eating. If you give your dog an occasional treat or use treats for training, remember to take this into account and reduce their daily allowance. You should try to feed your dog at the same time every day to get them into a routine. Remember to leave a gap after eating and before exercising. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. If you want to buy a pedigree puppy, we recommend looking for a Kennel Club Assured breeder as they have to do extra health tests and meet high standards. Set-up costs Puppy vaccines — if you rescue a dog, reputable centres will often vaccinate them for you. Remember that ongoing booster vaccinations will be needed to continue their immunity. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around 6 months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will neuter any dogs they rehome, saving you this cost. Equipment — including a collar and tags, lead, harness, dog beds, dog bowls, pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes, grooming brushes and toys. Keep in mind that all these will need to be replaced with wear or damage or if your dog outgrows or damages them! Ongoing costs Food. Preventive healthcare — budget for routine vet visits to help stop your dog getting ill and catch any problems early. They need annual check-ups, vaccinations and regular flea and worming treatments. Check if your vet offers a health care plan as this can help spread the cost throughout the year. Accessories — including lots of poo bags, replacing worn toys and grooming accessories, buying doggy toothpaste and any other extras they might need. Other costs Training — basic training is very important and dogs can benefit from formal classes. Some dogs may have, or develop, behavioural problems which might need professional management. Boarding — you may also need to budget for boarding or dog sitting costs if you are planning to go away from home on holiday. Breeders If you buy a Bull Terrier puppy from a breeder, make sure your puppy will be well socialised and have all necessary health checks and vaccinations. Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the first part of the golden retriever's body. First draw four small marks for the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circles don't have to be perfect. They're just guides. If you do want perfect circles, trace the outer rim of a coin, a bottle cap or any other object with a circular edge. The circle on the right should be smaller than the one on the left, and their edges should touch. Place the circle on the right slightly higher so that the top edges of both circles are at the same level. Step 2: Draw another circle on the top, left side as a guide for the golden retriever's head. Draw this circle the same way. First draw four marks that indicate the height and width, then connect the marks using curved lines. The edges of the circles should touch. This circle should be a bit smaller than the body circle on the right. Step 3: Draw a curved horizontal line across the golden retriever's head. This is a construction line that will help you place the dog's facial features later. Add a curved vertical line on the top left side of the head for another construction line. According to the AKC , quality, regulated animal byproducts can be good for your dog. These byproducts can include organ meats or entrails, which often contain more nutrients than, say, plain chicken breast. Another misconception is that dogs should eat grain-free diets. As you saw in the second study mentioned above, that can actually be very harmful for your dog and cause DCM. But food labels can be a little vague and confusing, so below is an explanation of what some of these terms mean, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual and the AKC. There is one caveat though. For instance, flaked corn, ground corn, and kibbled corn could be sprinkled in an ingredient list and not be listed as the first few ingredients, but in reality, if you were to add them all up they are all corn, after all , you might find that this food is made mostly of corn. The same goes for chicken, chicken meal, and chicken byproduct. Meat vs. Meat Meal vs. The quality of these ingredients can vary widely, so be sure to talk to your vet about this and choose a reputable brand of food. Below are a few examples: Obesity. Golden Retrievers love food and they do have a tendency to become overweight if you let them. This problem can often affect these next two problems… Joint issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to joint issues and growing too fast because they eat too much can often make this problem worse more on this in the next section. Heart issues. Skin issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to hot spots and excess protein in their diets can be a factor that causes them. Many goldens suffer from food allergies. One cup of Brand X food may have calories per cup, while Brand Y has calories per cup. During a vet visit our veterinarian said he looked too small and lethargic for a puppy his age about 8 weeks at the time , and he recommended we feed him a little more. As far as how often to feed your puppy, this same rule applies. For us, we fed Oliver three times per day until he was a little over a year old. Getting a Golden Retriever Puppy?
