However, their size and look can vary a lot depending on what kind of disorder they have and how severe it is. It is important to note that Dwarf German Shepherds may have health issues associated with their dwarfism genes, such as joint problems, hormonal issues, and spinal issues. If you do get one, they often make fantastic pets and we do adore them, but it is vital not to support any breeder who intentionally breeds dwarfs. This is not always the case there are several different ways of getting a smaller dog , but it is something to be aware of when breeders advertise unusually small dogs for higher prices. In this article, we will discuss the different causes of dwarfism and how best to care for a GSD if they happen to have it. Is a Miniature German Shepherd a Dwarf? A miniature German Shepherd is really just smaller than a typical German Shepherd. But a dwarf is a dog with genetic issues that stunted normal growth. Causes of Dwarfism in German Shepherds Pituitary Dwarfism Pituitary dwarfism is a genetic condition that affects the production of growth hormones in German Shepherds. Dogs with this condition have a small pituitary gland, which leads to insufficient growth hormone production. This results in stunted growth and other physical abnormalities such as a large head and short limbs. The condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, meaning that both parents must carry the gene for the puppy to inherit the condition. Although pituitary dwarfism is rare in German Shepherds, it is important for breeders to test their dogs for the gene to prevent the spread of the condition. If your German Shepherd puppy has pituitary dwarfism you should see the signs within the first 2 to 3 months. Stunted Growth: The dog will grow more slowly than expected and remain smaller in size. Delayed Teething: Teething may occur later than in normal puppies. Thin Coat or Hair Loss: The coat might be sparse and thin, and the puppy may even suffer from bald spots. Skin Problems: There may be various skin issues like flaking or increased pigmentation. Lack of Sexual Development: Affected dogs might not develop sexual characteristics typical of their gender. Protruding Abdomen: This might be seen as the abdomen looking distended or pot-bellied. Delayed Closure of Growth Plates: The growth plates in the bones close later than normal, affecting the overall growth of the dog. Weak Immune System: The dog may be more prone to infections and other illnesses. Behavioral Issues: Some dogs with pituitary dwarfism may display behavioral issues, often becoming lethargic or fearful. They also usually have small, fox-like faces and a shrill bark. If you suspect your German Shepherd puppy may be affected by this condition, consulting with a veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment is highly advised. Chondrodysplasia Chondrodysplasia is another genetic condition that affects the development of cartilage in German Shepherds. Dogs with this condition have shorter legs and a larger head, giving them a dwarf-like appearance. The condition is caused by a mutation in the COL10A1 gene, which affects the formation of bone and cartilage. Chondrodysplasia is also inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, and breeders should test their dogs for the gene to prevent the spread of the condition. It is important to note that not all German Shepherds with short legs have chondrodysplasia, as there are other factors that can contribute to this physical characteristic. Enlarged Joints: The joints, especially in the legs, may appear larger and more pronounced. Spinal Deformities: Abnormalities in the spinal column can lead to a range of issues, including difficulty moving and pain. Facial Deformities: The skull may develop abnormally, leading to a changed appearance in the face, including a shorter snout. Difficulty Walking: Due to the shortened limbs and potential joint problems, the dog may have a noticeable limp or difficulty walking. Pain: The dog may experience chronic pain, particularly in the joints, due to the abnormal development of cartilage and bone. Slow Growth: Growth may be stunted, with puppies not growing at the expected rate. Dental Problems: There might be dental issues due to the misalignment of jaws. Respiratory Issues: Some dogs may develop breathing problems due to the abnormal development of the chest and ribcage. There may also be some overlap between the symptoms of chondrodysplasia and other forms of dwarfism, so professional veterinary evaluation is essential. Understanding Chondrodysplasia vs. Chondrodystrophy in Dogs with Dwarfism Now to understand dwarfism in GSDs that is not from the pituitary gland, we need to look at something called chondrodysplasia and chondrodystrophy. Think of CDPA and CDDY as two different ways that a dog might end up with short legs and we might call them dwarfs, although it is not always true dwarfism. But once in a while, it can pop up in German Shepherds because of a hidden gene that decides to make an appearance. These discs can start to break down way too early this is called IVDD , and they might even slip out of place herniate. This is a big deal and can be painful. The different causes of Dwarfism in German Shepherds is what massively impacts what these dogs look like. Dogs with chondrodysplasia or chondrodystrophy look like normal German shepherds, but they may just have shorter legs or perhaps a shorter back. Meanwhile, dogs with pituitary dwarfism look stunted and foxlike, with patchy or thin hair. We will use three YouTube videos to get an idea of what the different types of dwarf GSDs may look like. In the video, we see a German Shepherd Puppy called Ranger that has pituitary dwarfism note that Ranger has a much fuller coat than these dogs often have : The German Shepherd Puppy Will Never Grow Up The Dodo Little But Fierce In the next video, we can see a video of a GSD with a different kind of abnormality that gives him a very short back: Finally, in the next video we see the extremely rare Mikeygus, a German Shepherd with Chondrodystrophy or chondroplasia, making him look a bit like a Corgi mix. This condition is caused by the compression of the spinal cord due to the degeneration of the intervertebral discs. Symptoms of IVDD include back pain, difficulty walking, and even paralysis. It is important to keep your dog at a healthy weight and avoid activities that put excessive strain on their back to prevent this condition. They will need hormone treatment from early on. Life Expectancy German Shepherd Dogs with pituitary dwarfism have shorter life expectancies than normal-sized dogs. On average, they live to be around 4 to 5 years old. On the other hand, German Shepherds with chondrodysplasia also have shorter life expectancies due to their susceptibility to IVDD and other health issues. However, with proper care and management of their health, these dogs can live happy and fulfilling lives, often living up to 8 to 10 years. Also, see our article on how long German Shepherds live. It is important for owners of dwarf German Shepherds to be aware of these common health issues and take proactive measures to prevent them. Regular check-ups with a veterinarian and maintaining a healthy weight can go a long way in ensuring the health and longevity of these special dogs. Care and Maintenance Dietary Requirements Dwarf German Shepherds require a well-balanced diet to stay healthy and active. The diet should consist of high-quality proteins, healthy fats, and essential vitamins and minerals. It is recommended to feed them dry kibble made specifically for small breeds, as it is easier for them to chew and digest. It is important to avoid overfeeding a dwarf German Shepherd, as they are prone to obesity. Feeding them small meals throughout the day instead of one large meal can help prevent overeating. Providing plenty of fresh water is also essential to keep them hydrated and healthy. Exercise Needs Dwarf German Shepherds are an active breed and require regular exercise to maintain their physical and mental health. They enjoy going for walks, playing fetch, and other outdoor activities. It is recommended to provide them with at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, but they will benefit from more if possible. However, their exercise needs will really depend on how their dwarfism affects their health and physical ability. In addition to physical exercise, mental stimulation is also important for a dwarf German Shepherd. Providing them with puzzle toys, training sessions, and other mentally stimulating activities can help keep them engaged and prevent boredom. Overall, caring for a dwarf German Shepherd requires a commitment to providing them with a healthy diet and regular exercise. With proper care and attention, they can live a long and happy life. The vet may recommend hormone replacement therapy to help the dog grow and develop normally. Chondrodysplasia Chondrodysplasia is a form of dwarfism that affects the bones and cartilage of the dog. It results in shorter legs and a shorter stature. This condition can also cause joint problems, such as hip dysplasia, and respiratory issues. To manage chondrodysplasia, regular veterinary check-ups are necessary. Additionally, surgery may be required to correct joint problems. Make sure they stay on life-long canine joint supplements. Overall, it is important to provide proper healthcare and treatment for Dwarf German Shepherds to ensure they live a healthy and happy life. Positive reinforcement techniques work best with this breed. Consistency is key when training a Dwarf German Shepherd, as hormone issues can lead to other problems, like lethargy or behavioral problems. It is important to establish yourself as the leader early on in the training process. Also see how to potty train German Shepherds. Using treats and praise to reward good behavior is effective. Punishing bad behavior is not recommended, as it can lead to fear and anxiety in the dog. Instead, redirect their attention to a more appropriate behavior. Dwarf German Shepherds are intelligent and eager to please, making them quick learners. Training sessions should be short and frequent to keep the dog engaged and motivated. They need to be exposed to different people, animals, and environments to prevent fear and aggression. Early socialization is recommended, starting from a young age. Introducing the dog to new experiences gradually is important. This can be done through puppy classes, playdates with other dogs, and walks in different environments. Positive interactions with other animals and people will help the dog develop good social skills. It is important to supervise interactions with other dogs and animals, especially during the early stages of socialization. In conclusion, training and socialization are important aspects of owning a Dwarf German Shepherd. Positive reinforcement techniques and early socialization are key to raising a well-behaved and social dog. Is there a Miniature German Shepherd? Many people love the German Shepherd breed for their loyalty, intelligence, and versatility. However, some may prefer a smaller version of this breed, perhaps due to limited living space or a preference for smaller dogs. This has led some to wonder if a miniature German Shepherd exists. Despite some claims by breeders and sellers, there is no such thing as a true miniature German Shepherd. The breed standard for German Shepherds, established by the American Kennel Club AKC , specifies a height range of inches for males and inches for females. Any dog that falls outside of this range cannot be considered a purebred German Shepherd. Some breeders may attempt to create a smaller version of the breed by breeding smaller German Shepherds together or by crossing them with other small dog breeds. However, deliberately breeding smaller dogs can result in significant health problems and is not recognized by the AKC as a legitimate breed. So, it is important to be cautious when considering purchasing a dog that is marketed as a miniature German Shepherd. These dogs may be the result of unethical breeding practices or may be a mix of several breeds, making it difficult to predict their temperament and health issues. Perhaps the best smaller German Shepherds are really mixed breeds. These two dogs may look similar, and a Malinois by look like a miniature German Shepherd, but they are usually far more intense military grade working dogs and they are not good dogs for the average pet parent. In conclusion, while there is no such thing as a true miniature German Shepherd, there are other small dog breeds that may share some physical and personality traits with the German Shepherd. It is important to do thorough research and choose a reputable breeder or rescue organization when looking to add a new furry friend to your family. The average lifespan of a dwarf German Shepherd with pituitary dwarfism is 4 to 5 years. German Shepherds with chondrodysplasia may live as long as 8 to 10 years, unless their lifespan is cut short by a debilitating complication like IVDD. What is the price range for a dwarf German Shepherd? The price range for a dwarf German Shepherd varies depending on the breeder and location. Ethically, these dogs should not cost much as they are dogs with a disability that need special care and may have high vet bills. Try not to support these breeders, but by all means, do adopt a dwarf if you find it, as they are still rewarding and wonderful pets. How big do pocket shepherds typically get? Pocket shepherds, also known as dwarf German Shepherds, typically weigh between 25 to 50 pounds and stand around 12 to 16 inches tall at the shoulder. However their size and weight differs drastically depending on the type and severity of dwarfism. What is the difference between a dwarf German Shepherd and a miniature German Shepherd? There is no official breed standard for a miniature German Shepherd. However, it is important to note that a true miniature German Shepherd does not exist, and any dog marketed as such may be a mixed breed or the result of selective breeding. Final Thoughts In conclusion, the Dwarf German Shepherd is a unique dog that offers many benefits to potential owners. While they may be smaller in size, they make up for it with their loyal and sweet nature. They are highly intelligent and trainable, making them an ideal choice for those looking for a companion that can also serve as a working dog. One of the most appealing aspects of the Dwarf German Shepherd is its adaptability. They can thrive in a variety of living situations, from apartments to large homes with yards. They are also well-suited for families with children and can be trained to be gentle and patient with them. However, with proper care and attention, these issues can be minimized. Overall, the Dwarf German Shepherd is an excellent choice for those looking for a loyal and intelligent companion that can also serve as a working dog. They are adaptable, trainable, and make great family pets. I wondered if you could buy a German Shepherd, which stayed as cute as a puppy — forever. German Shepherds can be small. However, they likely suffer from pituitary dwarfism , a rare genetic condition. I can see why it can get confusing. However, this article is solely about the dwarf German Shepherd, and I have to warn you what you will learn may break your heart. It occurs primarily in the German Shepherd breed and its relatives, for example, the Saarloos Wolfdog and the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog. So what exactly is the pituitary gland? This is a pea-sized endocrine gland found at the base of the brain and plays a significant role in regulating vital body functions and general well-being. Pituitary dwarfism associated with growth hormone deficiency in German Shepherd dogs has been seen for decades, and dwarfs are born worldwide. However, the condition has been reported to have recently spread quite rapidly in Europe, and this is for two reasons: Through the breeding of unsuspected carriers. The problem is that German Shepherds that are carriers of the recessive gene do not have any visible symptoms, so the reputable breeder would be none the wiser. Unscrupulous breeders realized that they could sell a small German Shepherd more expensively if they tried to pass it off as a smaller version of a purebred. This is also the main reason for the confusion between a German Shepherd suffering from dwarfism and the Miniature German Shepherd crossbreed. Other Causes of Pituitary Dwarfism We have learned that pituitary dwarfism in dogs is caused by the lack of growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland due to a genetic disorder. But what else can cause dog dwarfism? Tumor Cysts Infection These other causes are also due to the lack of growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland. Is Dwarfism Common in German Shepherds? Dwarfism is common in German Shepherds 2 to 6 months old when symptoms of slow growth will be evident. No studies have confirmed the actual percentage of dwarf German Shepherds. Other susceptible breeds are Border Collies, Labradors, and Weimaraners. Pituitary dwarfism in German Shepherds must be taken very seriously when breeding as this is an incurable incapacitating disease that we could easily prevent. As long as mating between two mutated gene carriers is stopped, no dwarf German Shepherds will be born. It is one of the few tests available for genetic conditions. I discovered that in the Netherlands, Dutch law now compels German Shepherd dog breeders to use this genetic testing. If this DNA test were mandatory for all German Shepherd breeding and the implementation of a correct breeding policy, then pituitary dwarfism would be completely eradicated. Unfortunately, screening all potential German Shepherd breeding is impracticable and seldom happens. You could also argue that screening is unnecessary due to the low prevalence of the disease, even though we have the statistics for the number of carriers. Some of the ones that survive are often sold, sometimes before the condition is recognized. There is also the cruel breeding practice whereby unscrupulous breeders operating puppy farms often called puppy mills care more about profits than puppies. I found this sad little story of a rescued puppy from a commercial breeding facility in Indiana, whereby a German Shepherd puppy was suffering from dwarfism. Signs of a German Shepherd suffering from dwarfism are their slow growth rate, which usually becomes evident in puppies between weeks old. They will keep their puppy coat for longer in their first year until they eventually go bald. The head and lower legs usually remain with fur. Dwarf puppies will retain their puppy coat for much longer than healthier littermates. However, they will lose the coat in their first year as the dog suffers from alopecia and will become bald, except for the head and lower legs. Pituitary dwarfism in German Shepherds is a severe illness, and clinical signs are not limited to physical appearance. There are also many other hidden problems that a dwarf German Shepherd may suffer. These are some of the severe symptoms: Bacterial skin infections due to alopecia. Renal failure due to underdeveloped liver and kidneys. Cardiovascular problems. Slow and dull intelligence to an underactive thyroid gland. Undescended testes in male dogs. Small testes and penis in male dogs. Irregular or absent heat cycles in females. Neurological symptoms due to abnormal cervical vertebrae. Secondary Hypothyroidism underactive thyroid gland. Delayed dental eruption. Puppies often have a shrill bark. It may have the appearance of a fox. According to the University of Utrecht, without proper treatment, the long-term survival rate of German Shepherds with dwarfism is poor, and many will not live to more than 3 to 4 years of age. Although your German Shepherd may be displaying obvious visible signs of dwarfism, the diagnosis of pituitary dwarfism in dogs is via endocrine tests blood and urine. Imaging tests may also be conducted to check for cysts. Treatment New methods of treating dwarfs have also become available in the last few years, mostly involving replenishing the missing hormones. There is no canine growth hormone, but these are some other options available: Porcine pig growth hormone. This is expensive, and the results differ. These are steroidal drugs that stimulate the production of growth hormones. Thyroid hormones, e. However, results vary. Sadly there is no treatment to cure them. Note: Be cautious about potential impacts when different breeds are allowed to breed for aesthetic reasons. Final Thoughts Suppose you came here looking for a miniature German Shepherd, and this article has melted your heart. In that case, you can contact The Saartje Foundation in the Netherlands to help adopt and rehome a dwarf German Shepherd. Please be aware that it will involve a potentially very high cost because the dog has particular health needs. You can also contact them confidentially if you have a dwarf dog that you feel you cannot keep, as the foundation has a small number of experienced people in various countries willing to give a dwarf a new home. Breed Info Dwarf German Shepherds are definitely eye-catching. But what causes dwarfism in these dogs and how does it affect their lives? Just like humans, dogs can have a condition called pituitary dwarfism. This is a genetic issue that affects the pituitary gland, which is a vital organ that balances hormones and regulates critical processes within the body. Among the most obvious effects of this condition is stunted growth. You can easily tell a Dwarf German Shepherd from an average one because it stops growing at about half of its typical adult size. However, dwarfism affects much more than size in dogs. Dwarf GSDs often suffer from a variety of serious health issues, which lead to a short life expectancy. Dwarfism is not a disease that dogs contract. Rather, dogs are born with the condition caused by the genes they inherit from their parents. This may not be apparent until the lack of growth is observed. In humans as well as in dogs, pituitary dwarfism is a genetic disorder caused by a recessive gene. Neither parent needs to be a dwarf to produce a dwarf GSD. However, both parents need to carry this gene to produce offspring with this condition. For clarity, you can use A to represent the dominant gene of a GSD with properly functioning pituitary glands and a to represent the recessive gene associated with dwarfism. Dogs that will develop as dwarves will have the aa combination. So, dwarf German Shepherds are usually produced by mating two dogs that are carriers of this gene. For this reason, they are, thankfully, not very common. Despite the fact that they are not very common, they still do exist and breeders need to take responsible steps to prevent the occurrence of dwarfism in their litters. Doing so can eventually eradicate pituitary dwarfism from the GSD gene pool entirely. The only way to reliably prevent the production of dwarf German Shepherds is to test both potential parents before they are allowed to mate. Two dogs with the recessive gene should not be allowed to mate. However, it is typically unnecessary, as you will notice the effects of the condition at an early age. A dwarf GSD will stop growing while others in the same litter experience a growth spurt. Your veterinarian should also recognize the symptoms. Dwarf German Shepherds stop growing at around months of age. Because of this stunted growth, GSDs with dwarfism grow to about pounds. Without this genetic condition, these dogs generally grow up to 90 pounds, some even over pounds. However, this issue goes much deeper than just its size. They are not merely small but actually suffer from real growth issues like abnormal development of their spine, bones, and joints. Because of this, they are much more likely to experience instability and pain. Many will also develop some form of paralysis in their lifetime. Apart from growth problems, dwarf German Shepherds will experience skin and coat issues. They will shed most of their soft puppy coat but will rarely ever develop into their adult coat. Their skin also becomes scaly. Additionally, the adult teeth of dwarf GSD may grow too late or not at all. Their organs—including reproductive organs—may not form or may form to be abnormal. Dwarfism affects German Shepherds not only physically but also emotionally and mentally. Many dogs that have this condition are extremely temperamental due to the hormonal imbalance it causes. In some cases, they develop aggressive behaviors. Throughout their short lives, they are usually treated with artificial hormones and medication that should help manage the symptoms of their condition. Because it is such an undesirable condition, it would be difficult to find a dwarf German Shepherd to buy. Most are put to sleep as soon as symptoms become apparent. Nevertheless, not all people believe that euthanizing dwarf GSDs is the more humane option. Some will try to save them and give them the necessary support so they may have the best possible quality of life until they pass on naturally. Even in these cases, they are rarely ever put up for sale. Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous pet shops that will still sell dwarf GSDs either to unwitting buyers or those who were drawn to the uniqueness of dogs with this condition. Although they might be cheaper to buy, they will cost much more to maintain due to the veterinary expenses they will incur throughout their lifetime. Are Dwarf German Shepherds Purebred? Yes, German Shepherds with dwarfism are purebred. Two purebred parents produce dwarf German Shepherds, although they are both carriers of the dwarf gene. Therefore, all their offspring—dwarf or not—are purebred. However, the dwarf offspring will be undesirable or unsuitable for mating. The American Kennel Club is a registry for purebred dogs. Neither would they be healthy enough to excel at canine sports and title recognition programs. No, puppies typically sold as mini German Shepherds are not dwarves but mixed breeds. These dogs generally live long and healthy lives. In contrast, dwarf German Shepherds are purebred but suffer from the genetic condition that severely affects their health and lifespan. Final Thoughts Caring for a dwarf German Shepherd can certainly be challenging. Not only do they require more medical attention than the average GSD but they also live much shorter lives. Hopefully, over time, this defect will be wiped out from the breeding pool and no dog would have to suffer from it. Dwarf German Shepherds can have a range of health issues. As Antagene explains, pituitary dwarfism is not a benign condition that simply results in a smaller than normal German Shepherd dog. It is a condition that is linked to a problem with the pituitary gland where the gland itself fails to grow and develop properly. It controls the activities of other glands in the endocrine system and that in turn controls growth throughout the body. The pituitary gland and its subordinate glands secrete important hormones that tell the other parts of the body what to do and how much to grow and when to stop growing. And many important functions such as metabolism and reproduction also do not happen as they should. This is basically what is happening when a German Shepherd dog inherits pituitary dwarfism. As Merck Veterinary Manual explains, pituitary dwarfism is considered to be a juvenile-onset canine disease. In other words, it starts in puppyhood. There are two main reasons why the pituitary gland may stop forming properly in puppyhood. The first reason is that the growth is paused because of a tumor forms on the gland itself. The second reason is that the gland itself simply does not form properly. Pituitary dwarfism affects more German Shepherd dogs than any other dog breed, although certain other breeds may occasionally develop the condition as well. Pituitary dwarfism can affect male and female German Shepherd puppies equally. What Happens to a Dwarf German Shepherd? There are a number of concerning health impacts to watch for when a German Shepherd puppy is born with pituitary dwarfism. The condition is visible very early in life — usually by the age of two months old. In most cases, the puppy is not expected to live any longer than five years old and may pass at a younger age. Two to three months old The German Shepherd puppy starts to slow down in their growth. This becomes visible around the age of two months as littermates keep getting bigger and the dwarf German Shepherd puppy stops growing at an equal pace. Three months to one year old The dwarf German Shepherd puppy does not shed out the puppy coat like their littermates but retains the soft puppy coat. The coat may become increasingly sparse and, in time, shed out somewhat, but the adult coat does not grow in. Rather, the skin becomes scaly and blackened. The coat that remains if any is still soft like the puppy coat. In most cases, the puppy will retain a larger amount of fur only on the head and hocks. The puppy teeth may or may not fall out but the adult teeth often fail to grow in. If they do come in, they will be late. For male puppies, the reproductive organs will be smaller than normal and the testes may not form properly or descend. For female puppies, the first heat cycle may be delayed or prevented. One year to four years old Even with a life expectancy that is typically five years or less, a dwarf German Shepherd puppy can easily take up to four years to finish what growing they can do. Significant neurological and spinal issues can be present due to the failure of the spinal column to form normally, especially in the first two vertebras in the upper cervical spine. Another unfortunate side effect of pituitary dwarfism in German Shepherd dogs is anxiety or aggression. Vice tells the true story of a litter of six GSD puppies, of which three were born with the condition. Dwarf GSDs that develop either of these conditions can behave in very aggressive ways towards people and other animals. Pituitary dwarfism is what is called an inherited genetic autosomal recessive disorder. What this means in simple language is that both German Shepherd parent dogs must contribute a copy of the gene in order for a puppy to have a chance of inheriting pituitary dwarfism. The fact that the incidence of pituitary dwarfism in the German Shepherd dog breed today is estimated to be as high as 20 percent is telling. Many German Shepherd dogs are carriers of the disease. However, as the Veterinary Information Network VIN explains, there is a pre-breeding genetic screening test that can take a blood draw and detect whether a potential parent dog is a carrier of the gene. If the dog is verified as a carrier, that dog should not be bred. This is the only reliable way to prevent a puppy from inheriting pituitary dwarfism. These types of breeders are much less likely to take the time and go to the expense of having pre-breeding genetic screening tests performed before permitting their dogs to mate. Even if a breeder is absolutely sure their dog comes from a purebred lineage that does not carry the gene, as this Vice story illustrates, it is still vital to have the pre-screening health test performed. German Shepherd puppies that have pituitary dwarfism are likely to suffer from a wide variety of health issues throughout their short lifespans. However, not every puppy that is a dwarf German Shepherd will necessarily have the exact same set of health symptoms. To that point, a puppy that receives expert veterinary care and appropriate treatment is likely to experience less severe health symptoms along the way. There is no cure for pituitary dwarfism in any dog breed. But there are treatments that can ease symptoms and in some measure supplement the vital hormones that the malformed pituitary gland is not producing naturally. According to GSD Pituitary Dwarfism, there are two ways that pituitary dwarfism can show up in a dog. The dog is a genetic carrier only When a dog is a genetic carrier of pituitary dwarfism only, this means that dog received only one copy of the recessive gene for the condition. But carriers, even though they do not show any signs or symptoms of the disease itself, they can pass it on to their puppies if the other parent dog also is a carrier and also passes the gene on to a puppy. The dog has active pituitary dwarfism When a dog gets two copies of the pituitary dwarfism gene, that is when you will see the health symptoms that we addressed earlier in this article. Not only is it likely that a dwarf German Shepherd puppy will grow up to be sterile not able to breed but these dogs should never be permitted to breed. Because dogs that inherit pituitary dwarfism have malformed and malfunctioning pituitary glands, the primary treatment involves supplementing the missing hormones with artificial sources. By supplementing with artificial synthetic versions of some of the missing hormones, a dog with pituitary dwarfism may have less severe symptoms of the condition. As ResearchGate explains, treating dwarf GSD puppies with synthetic thyroid hormones can help ease symptoms and promote the growth of the coat and adult teeth. However, it is important to note that supplementing with synthetic hormones can also introduce side effects that may cause further discomfort to the dog. Skin conditions, hot spots, and cysts are some of the many side effects associated with these therapies. Another treatment that can somewhat promote more normal growth is to delay the spay or neuter procedure. However, to avoid any risk that the dwarf GSD might inadvertently mate with another dog and pass along the condition, the owner must be willing to be extra-vigilant about keeping the dog away from other intact dogs. As well, by choosing to delay the spay or neuter procedure , an intact dwarf German Shepherd dog that develops severe anxiety or aggression may have even worse bouts of these symptoms, which could present a danger to the owner as well as the community. Daily Life With a Dwarf German Shepherd Dog More than a few dwarf German Shepherd dogs have garnered significant followings on social media for their cute perpetually puppy-like appearance. This has helped to raise awareness of pituitary dwarfism in dogs as well. With careful breeding, pituitary dwarfism in GSD dogs can be prevented. You can watch him running and playing and snuggling and doing all the things German Shepherd dogs do. While his condition, pituitary dwarfism, is rare in most species, it affects up to 20 percent of all German Shepherd dogs according to the Saartje Foundation.

Playfulness Watchdog Ability The German Shepherd Dog is a natural protector and so adaptable and intelligent that they have performed about every job known to dogs. If he had opposable thumbs, he would be unstoppable. Intelligent and obedient, purebred German Shepherd puppies are more than devoted pets - they are lifelong companions. Pure-breed black German shepherd puppies have the right temperament to make engaging family pets. Leave them alone or confined. These pups will grow mischievous and become high-strung. As the name implies, they originated in Germany in the late s. As part of the Herding Group, German Shepherds were used for livestock, herding, and guarding sheep. Back then, GSDs were not considered pets or companions but servants of farmers. Although German Shepherds weren't considered household pets, their owners did provide proper food, protection, and shelter. In the early s, a German cavalry officer named Captain Max Von Stephanitz made it his mission to create an ideal German herder. He co-founded the world's first club devoted to German Shepherds. Von spent 35 years promoting and refining the wonderful breed. People finally noticed how strong, smart, and obedient German Shepherds are. So now the military employs them as working dogs. Their intelligence, strength, speed, obedience, agility, and keen sense of smell make them perfect for the job. German Shepherds are also very versatile and make great companions. Their impressive and lovable personalities soon drew the attention of other countries. German Shepherd dog was brought to the United States in the early s, and American breeders began to develop their own lines of the breed. The American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd in , and the species has been one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States ever since. Today, GSDs are not only considered one of the most favorite household pets. The versatility and outstanding characteristics make German Shepherds beautiful pets, companions, and protectors. Due to the breed's reputation for being loyal, courageous, and easy to train, German Shepherds are used as police or military dogs. Personality Know the personality and temperament of your German Shepherd Dog German Shepherds are well-known for their smartness, confidence, intelligence, loyalty, and courageous personalities. As household pets, German Shepherd dogs get along with their owners and other members of the family. However, they do not get along with strangers easily, but with time, they warm up to anyone who tries to be friendly with them. The German Shepherd dog breed is distinguished for courage, loyalty, and the ability to maintain training. Because German Shepherds have strong guardian instincts, they tend to be loyal and protective of their owners and children. Given their strong guardian instincts, inadequate training and poor socialization can make them aggressive toward strangers. Their over-protective and aggressive behaviors can put any owner at risk. Therefore, GSDs should be carefully socialized with proper training from a very young age. The best thing about GSDs is that they are intelligent. German Shepherd dogs are usually active and like to be occupied with an activity. They do well with people who allow them to stay active. They need an ample amount of exercise daily to retain their activeness. They should be continually exposed to supervision during the training period. Most importantly, your German Shepherd should not be confined to a kennel or backyard alone, as GSDs like to be around their loved ones. Keeping them tied up alone will make them lonely and aggressive. A German Shepherd dog should be purchased from a good and reputed breeder. We do not hand over any puppy or dog without having them vet-checked. Health Health is wealth, even for your German Shepherd dog. As a dog lover, when you welcome a German Shepherd puppy into your family, they become an integral part of your life. Besides training your dog, it is best to focus on your pet's wellness. You must do everything you need to optimize your pet's health and happiness. Most German Shepherds are usually healthy dogs if purchased from a good breeder. A responsible breeder will screen breeding stock to check on health conditions such as elbow dysplasia, canine hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, etc. The German Shepherd Dog has an average lifespan of 9 to 13 years. Male, Adult German Shepherd weighs around lbs. Female, Adult German Shepherd weighs around lbs. They can run 30 mph Maximum Running. Moreover, German Shepherds are prone to experience problems like bloat, skin allergies, gastric torsion, and abdomen swelling. German Shepherds experience these conditions. German Shepherds must be taken to the vet, like most other dogs, for routine health checkups. A regular checkup allows you to track your pet's health condition. Owners should be aware of all the GSDs' health-related symptoms to take care of them by taking their dogs to the vet when any symptom occurs. Besides, if you want to buy a healthy pet, you must contact a good breeder. We do everything a good breeder would do to deliver a healthy puppy to a customer. We also discuss health problems in the genetics of a puppy or dog. Grooming The importance of grooming your German Shepherd dog The adorable appearance of the German Shepherd dog is known to all. They are very adorable and majestic to look at. GSDs usually shed twice a year. Proper grooming helps in controlling shedding and keeps the coat nice. They only need a quick brushing a few times a week. A thorough brush helps to remove loose hairs from their coat and keep the fur nice and shiny. During the shedding time, frequent brushing is required to prevent the mess caused by heavy shedding. Giving the occasional bath should suffice to help them clean and smell nice. Your dog can end up hurting you unintentionally if the nails are too long. Invest in quality dog grooming products to ensure proper and safe grooming. Thus, do not forget to groom your precious German Shepherd dog. Finding How to find the right German Shepherd Breeders? The German Shepherd is one of the most popular dog breeds in the U. S and all over the world. GSDs have love and affection towards their owners, whether a puppy, a young dog, or an adult dog. Find and choose a good breeder to find the right German Shepherd puppy. A German shepherd can have six to eight puppies. Larger litter are usually born to dogs that are bred early and often. The mother's milk production is also stimulated by the hormone prolactin, which is secreted in large amounts after mating. When do German shepherd puppies' ears stand up? Some puppies' ears stand up as early as 5 or 6 weeks old, but others don't have completely erect ears until they're a few months old. As long as the puppy's ears start to stand up by about 8 or 9 weeks old, there's no need to worry. The breed is active and energetic Trainability Easy to train due to its intelligence Origin Though the Poodle is often associated with France, it is believed to have originated from Germany before finding its way to France where it became a distinct breed and family companion. It is also believed that the Poodle has many ancestors, all of whom are Waterdogs from Spain, Russia, Portuguese, French, Germany, etc. One suggests that the ancestor was the Barbet from North Africa. No one knows which theory is the most accurate so the ancestry remains unclear. What we do know is that the Poodle is an old breed, going back to Ancient Egyptian civilization. Paintings and artifacts confirm this. It is also generally accepted that the smaller Poodles were developed in the 15th century. The Miniature and Toy Poodles retained the traits and behaviors of the Standard version but with smaller sizes. Each type played different roles in places like Paris. While the Standard was used to hunt and the Miniature to sniff, the Toy Poodle was an adorable companion to many rich folks. Though it was rare after World War 2 ended, it soon rose to become one of the most popular dog breeds in the US. The only distinctive feature of the white Toy Poodle is the white color. Poodles share the same intelligence, temperament, and even coat type. The only differences are sizes and colors. Thus, what you get from other Poodles is what you should expect from the white Toy Poodle. They can read your mood These dog breeds are known to be sensitive and can detect any change of emotions. This ability adds to their good rep as a family companion. During sad days, they will snuggle up and make you feel better. This also means any harsh treatments or anger from you will affect them more than many other dog breeds. You should be careful how you interact with this breed. The hairstyle was once more than a stylish trend The trademark haircut of the White Poodle Toy and other Poodles is often considered too classy and silly by many people. To the naysayers, it makes the breed look more like show dogs and less like competent pets. Back when Poodles had roles to play, the haircut helped them cross water bodies while protecting them from the inevitable chill of many rivers and streams. It is smarter than it looks A big misconception people have about this dog breed is that it is all beauty, no brains. This is further enforced by silly jokes that make poodles be vain pets with no substance. The Poodle is one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world, and all versions have this intelligence. Its intelligence makes it easy to train as it learns with ease. The hair simply grows like ours. It needs as much exercise as a bigger poodle Due to the size and role of companion dogs, the white Toy Poodle is often seen as a breed that may not require too much exercise. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Without exercise, this little breed shows the same antsy behavior as bigger breeds. It may lead to destructive acts. What separates it from others is the striking white color. The Toy Poodle, like other Poodles, has an elegant stride and a fanciful style. The coat is dense, sometimes harsh with hair that grows in curls. The small size and white color of this Poodle give it a cute, teddy bear look. Related: Color Genetics Poodles come in many colors, both standard and otherwise. Often, this color changes as they grow older. White is the most common color, although the hair type is often classified as black because White Poodles have black noses and dark eyes. This distinguishes them from Albino Poodles. Sadly, white Poodles are prone to deafness. Deafness is often associated with dog breeds with white coloration. According to generally accepted standards, this dog breed is termed Toy when it has a height that is less than 10 inches. Any Poodle taller than that officially belongs to the Miniature category. Their weight range falls between 6 to 9 pounds. Thus, you can expect that all Poodles will act the same way. Environment and training have a big role to play, however, so it is your responsibility to make sure your pet is well mannered. That said, there is a lot to consider if you want your pooch to be in a good mental and emotional state. The white Toy Poodle is loving and affectionate, always up for a snuggle with its owner. Its sensitivity makes it attune to your mood and it acts accordingly. This breed also likes being around people and is not the type of dog breed you should leave alone. A Toy Poodle wants to be around its family and partake in its activities. It is playful as well and known for its sense of humor. These dogs can keep you entertained for a long time with their clownish attitude. Expect brighter days with this adorable pup. However, you do need to be careful if you have small children. They tend to play roughly with dogs and may mistakenly injure a dog of small size. To be safe, this dog breed is better for a family with grown children. The caution aside, white Toy Poodles make good family dogs. White Toy Poodles usually have no issues with other dogs. They can live in peace with other canines and enjoy having other poodles around. You should also be careful having them around big dogs. Because of their low prey drive , they can also coexist with cats and other pets without being a threat. Are They Easy to Train? With their intelligence and love for people, this dog breed is trainable. Even new pet parents can attempt to teach these cute pooches good manners and better behaviors. They love to please their owners and are usually cooperative. Do not neglect training this breed or spoiling it because of its size and cuteness. Without training, it can become unbearable and act as the boss of the house. Train it with the same firmness as you would a big dog, but do not be harsh on your Toy Poodle. Take it on obedience training, house training, crate training, and socialization. Related: Complete Guide To Training Your Puppy Motivations and positive reinforcements will keep your pet more interested, but do not go overboard with treats. They are some of the healthiest dogs out there and rarely fall ill unless you got one that was poorly bred. You must get your pup from a breeder who is trustworthy and can provide all needed information on the health of the pup and its parents. Their healthy reputation notwithstanding, Toy Poodles are vulnerable to some illnesses that are peculiar to this breed. Symptoms include baldness and unexpected weight gain. Deafness: White Toy Poodles are especially vulnerable to loss of hearing. While this can be a struggle for the pet when it happens, deaf dogs can live normal lives and adapt to the setback. Epilepsy: Epilepsy is characterized by seizures, some more severe than others. It may be inherited or an offshoot of another illness. It has no cure but the seizures can be managed. The former is a result of an overload of cortisol. The latter is caused by a deficiency. Eye diseases: This dog breed is susceptible to different eye diseases. Others are cataracts and glaucoma. At this point, you may be eager to click on a website and order one white, cute Toy Poodle pup. However, you should be sure this dog breed can fit your lifestyle and expectations before you get it. It may be adorable and fluffy, but it can be a handful if it is incompatible with the way you live. Fortunately, the White Poodle Toy can be handled by any pet parent regardless of expertise. That said, you should be firm and committed to training this breed. Also, you should be cool with a pet that loves attention. Overly busy people who go out in the morning and come back late should go for a more independent dog breed. But if you work from home or retire, this breed can cure loneliness for real. They are suitable for both apartments and large spaces but need a lot of exercise to avoid getting bored and restless. The Hertzko slicker brush is an example of the right tool for your Toy Poodle. For the coat, we recommend a white and light coat enhancer Shampoo. It removes stains and brightens the color. The popularity of this color of Toy Poodle and Poodles in general has a huge effect on the price. Be prepared to make a huge expense to get one. You should make sure you have enough to take on the initial cost. Adoption is cheaper and a valid option. Where to buy a White Toy Poodle for Sale? But, there are several reasons why your labrador puppy might not be eating. Sometimes you need to worry. While, at times, it is okay to ignore it and give them some time. I will try to cover all the possible reasons why your Labrador is not eating. Why my labrador puppy is not eating? There can be many possible reasons behind it. Illness If your puppy is showing a lack of physical activity. Then, your puppy might be sick. If your puppy is in this state for a few days make sure you take them to the vet to get checked out. It can be a sign of cancer, kidney failure, liver problem, etc. Stress Your puppy can be under stress. There might be certain external factors affecting your puppy. Try keeping their environment light, and if possible play, along with them. This way, they might feel much better and get back to their daily routine. Along with it, some intestinal roundworms can affect the appetite of your puppy. Vets advise that you should not walk your young puppy outside until they have been vaccinated since puppies are so vulnerable to distemper and parvo. Dental Disease Maybe your puppy is having some issues with his teeth. It might be a broken or loose tooth, that is making it painful for your puppy to eat. If you find something like this, then you need to get a checkup done. Try changing the food and see if they eat it. Lab not eating but drinking water? It is another thing that many owners have experienced. So, is it something to worry about? He is not eating anything except drinking water. Give him a few days and monitor his symptoms. If symptoms get worse over time, if he stops drinking water, develops a fever, or starts vomiting then you should call your vet and talk about it. Dog not eating food but eating treats? It is again a common thing, and it is referred to as partial anorexia. It occurs when a dog is not feeling well. A dog will eat what is unique to it rather than eating anything else, such as treats, chicken, etc. It can sometimes become an issue but is less dangerous as compared to complete anorexia. Try these steps and check if your pet is back to its daily routine or not. So, slowly try to change the menu and add something new to it. And notice what he or she likes to eat. You can use different brands, different proteins, and much more. Limit the treat If your dog is not eating anything. Then try limiting their treats. This way, they will understand that the food given is the only meal for them. After that, they might get back to their daily routine. Separation anxiety All the dogs are not the same, and some dogs have separation anxiety. So, try to be with them while they are eating. It is just a matter of a few minutes. Then you can leave them, and get back to your work. Praise them While you are putting down your food, right in front of their nose, try to praise them. They are sensitive, and maybe praising them can change their mood and start eating back. Hand feeding Some pets also prefer hand-feeding rather than getting their food in the bowl. So, try to feed your dog with your hand. Make sure to not make this a habit. These were some of the tips you can use to get your puppy back to normal eating. After trying these tips, if your dog is not eating anything please make sure to talk to your vet immediately to run some tests. Should I worry if my puppy is not eating? You do not have to be worried every time your puppy is not eating. Try to follow all the steps given above. It might go on for 2 or 3 days. If you feel at any point this is a medical issue, please contact your vet immediately. Pay proper attention to the signs and if you find any unusual symptoms, then contact your vet immediately. How to stop this from happening again? Is there any way to prevent this from happening again in the future? Yes, there is. Add food that is good for its health. Never give them trash or spoiled food. It can eventually lead to an upset stomach. Signs your puppy needs to see a vet Besides the long-term risks of puppies not eating as they should, there are some immediate risks to take into account when your puppy refuses to eat. This is particularly true for toy breeds that are prone to hypoglycemia a drop in blood sugar , which can lead to serious complications. Puppies are also more susceptible to dehydration than older dogs. This seems especially the case if their main diet is canned food, as pups eating the "wetter" canned food tend to drink less. Here is a list of the more common reasons. Finicky Eater Being a picky eater isn't all that common in puppies. After all, your puppy has two qualities that should make them happy to eat just about anything: they're 1 a dog and 2 a puppy! However, in some cases, puppies can become picky eaters and have certain preferences in their eating habits. To be on the safe side, you always want to have your puppy's veterinarian evaluate them to be sure they are healthy if they show signs of not wanting to eat. If your puppy is given a clean bill of health by their veterinarian, consider whether they are happy to eat other things besides their meals, such as healthy dog treats or dog-safe fruit. If they are happily eating those things, it may be that they are getting a bit picky with their regular food. You have a couple of options here: Change their food. You certainly wouldn't want to be forced to eat something you don't like, day after day. Sometimes it's as easy as switching to a different texture or hardness of food. I don't advise changing the protein source chicken, beef, etc. Changing protein sources for your dog can make it more challenging in the future should your pup develop food sensitivities or allergies. This is one reason when pets do develop food allergies, they have to be fed veterinary hypoallergenic diets which tend to be much more expensive instead of limited ingredient or new protein diets. Stick with the same protein even if you're switching or adding canned food to their meals. And be sure to change your puppy's food gradually to avoid stomach upset. Make their food more enticing. This may be a food topper, fish oil supplement although don't overdo it, and remember that it is a fish protein in case of allergy concerns , or some wet food. Even just wetting the food with warm water and letting it sit for a few minutes can make it more enticing read: smelly for your puppy. Do this before you offer the food to your puppy. You don't want to build a habit of them refusing dry food and learning that doing so means you'll add something yummy. They're always learning! The goal here is to just get calories in. See below for some options on food toppers to try. If a puppy is truly being picky — again, this is rare — the usual recommendations from canine behavior consultants are to put the food down for 15 to 30 minutes and then put it away if uneaten after that time. It doesn't reappear again until their next mealtime. HOWEVER, because it's extremely important for a puppy to get enough calories from a balanced diet, this isn't recommended for young puppies or toy breeds that are prone to hypoglycemia low blood sugar. Be sure to rule out other causes for their lack of appetite first, and then speak with your veterinarian about whether they are old enough to try this method. Maybe you brought them home very recently. If you have children, maybe they have just gone back to school, and the puppy is experiencing separation anxiety. Or maybe the kids are spending more time at home. Keep an eye open for potential sources of stress for your pup. Well, the same can hold true for puppies. If you think this might be the reason, check out some ways to help keep your pup cool. Teething or Pain Just like babies become fussy about eating when they are teething, so can puppies. The discomfort and soreness they experience in their mouth can make them reluctant to eat their food, especially if it is dry food. The pain could be from an injury — after all, puppies can be quite accident-prone! Pups can also experience inflammation of their pancreas pancreatitis or growing pains from their developing bones. They could even have something stuck in their mouth — like a splinter or piece of wood from chewing on a stick — or a broken tooth from a bad chew toy. Check for any external or obvious sources of pain. See below for some teething toy suggestions and alternatives to dry food. Some snacks and treats, whether stolen by your puppy or given freely by you, can cause digestive upset as well as obesity and begging later in life. They may even cause your puppy to reject the healthier and balanced dog foods they should be eating! You can greatly decrease the chance of your pup sneaking their own treats by puppy-proofing your home and teaching them not to counter surf. If your pup is having diarrhea for more than 12 hours, they are at risk for dehydration. The risk for dehydration increases if your puppy is also vomiting. For those that are severely dehydrated, the skin will remain tented. This is a critical situation for puppies, and medical attention is needed immediately. Connect now Rates may differ for those residing outside the U. You'll have access to a vet for 7 days. Many puppies have roundworms or other parasites in their gut before you get them home. This is a big part of the reason why we vets usually deworm puppies at their puppy visits, recommend fecal poop testing, and vaccinate to prevent Parvo and other devastating diseases. For example, puppies with liver shunts will have stunted growth, poor muscle development, abnormal behavior such as head pressing, seizures, circling, etc. They may also have vomiting, diarrhea, or abnormal appetites. Acute kidney failure due to a toxin or infection can cause decreased appetite, abnormal urination, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, etc. Respiratory Infection One of the more common respiratory infections, kennel cough, can be mild and self-resolving, but it can also spread and reach the lungs. For some, this can be another reason not to want to eat. The best way to protect your puppy from kennel cough and perhaps even canine influenza, a. Therefore missing a meal or two can be problematic and be a cause for concern. Always err on the side of caution and call your veterinarian for advice in these situations. Add about 1 part water to 3 parts dry food. You can even warm it in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds to enhance the smell. Be sure it is not too hot before giving it to your puppy. Add in a little bit of canned food. Some puppies like it cold, some room temperature, and some prefer it warmed. Note: Choosing canned food is best done with your veterinarian's recommendation, but you can start by looking to see if the dry food you feed your pup is available in canned form. And stick with the same protein source. If the kibble is chicken, find a chicken canned food. However, these diets and the options below all require a veterinary prescription. Veterinary-formulated diets are meant to treat, cure, or alleviate certain medical conditions and if they are used incorrectly or for the wrong condition, they could cause other health issues. These diets should always be used under veterinary supervision. When you need a truly smelly and appetite-stimulating canned food, Royal Canin's Recovery canned food is a good option. If you wanted to switch dry foods — normally you'd want to transition over time — but because it's critical for a puppy to eat, this food is safer to switch suddenly. Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric dry canine formula provides complete and balanced nutrition for the growth of puppies and maintenance of adult dogs, including the growth of large breed dogs 70 lbs or more as an adult. You can try adding some peanut butter. If Feeding Canned Food: Try offering it cold, room temperature, or warm to find your pup's preference. Avoid broths containing onions, onion powder, chives, or garlic — as these can cause a breakdown of your pup's red blood cells. Mix Native Pet's Bone Broth powder with water as a pet-safe way to add broth to their food, or sprinkle this broth flavored food topper on their food. Some pups will perk up their appetite when you add a little bit of plain boiled white rice or pasta to their meals, or some boiled and shredded, boneless, skinless, spice-less chicken breast. Add some low-sodium green beans can encourage some puppies to eat. And the added benefit of green beans is they contain essential vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber. Add some room temperature or warmed chicken or turkey baby food the brands we linked to don't contain onions, which shouldn't be in any food you give your dog. Add some fruit, such as blueberries, cantaloupe, cranberries, etc. DO NOT give grapes, raisins, or currants since they are toxic. Check out our list of safe and unsafe fruits you can give your dog. You can also try a very small amount of canned pumpkin. While pumpkin has a lot of benefits, sometimes too much of a good thing can create issues. For example, excess fiber from the pumpkin could block the absorption of protein if the puppy consumes more of it than their normal diet. Additionally, too much can cause diarrhea, which would be an additional complication. If you normally feed your pup their food in a bowl, try a different type stainless steel instead of plastic or switch to a plate. Change where you feed your puppy. Feeding them in their crate or puppy playpen is the best idea, which provides some separation from other dogs, cats, and the hustle and bustle of your home. It also has the added bonus of creating a positive association with their crate an essential part of crate training and helping prevent resource guarding issues. You may need to stimulate their appetite by increasing activity before mealtime. Try taking them for a walk or have playtime before you plan to feed them. Try setting a fixed feeding schedule to see if they will eat once hungry. Providing puppy-safe teething toys can give them some relief. A cooling teething stick can help soothe gum irritation and feel good to gnaw on, and the softer rubber in puppy teething toys is gentler on your puppy's sore mouth. These pheromones mimic the scent of a mother nursing her puppies, encouraging a sense of safety and security. Adaptil Pheromone Diffuser Available at: Provide calming enrichment activities. Licking, chewing, and sniffing are excellent for not only providing mental enrichment but are also self-soothing. Spread some wet food on a licking mat you can even freeze it to make it longer-lasting or to use on hot days and give it to your puppy in their crate or playpen to work on. Make sure to supervise their licking mat session, as these aren't meant as chew toys. You can even blend up their dry food with some water or food topper and then smear it on the licking mat so they can get those much-needed food calories. Hyper Pet IQ Treat Lick Mat Available at: You can try spreading a bit of your dog's wet food, peanut butter, pureed pumpkin , or low-fat greek yogurt on this mat to provide a soothing enrichment activity. If you feel really desperate, you can attempt hand feeding. Just be warned, this could become a habit your puppy starts to rely on! Start by feeding from your hand and then work towards holding the bowl for them instead of feeding straight from your hand. From there you can build them up to eating from the bowl on the floor while you're further away Don't Over Treat: Be sure that you are not giving too many treats and spoiling meal time. A puppy that is full of yummy treats won't eat their regular meals because they just aren't hungry. There are a couple of options here to help mitigate extra treat calories and to ensure your puppy is getting a complete and balanced diet during intensive training. Use a portion of your dog's regular food as their training treats. Measure out their daily allotment and pull out a portion to use for training exercises. Use regular food treats indoors and for easy cues, saving the high-value training treats for puppy class or practice out and about. Rely on a different type of food as a training treat. For example, if your puppy eats dry food for meals, use air-dried dog food for treats, such as the Ziwi Peak Air-Dried food. The texture is different and many dogs find these types of food more valuable than dry food, but they are still formulated to provide a balanced diet. Speak with your veterinarian about how many calories your puppy should be consuming each day. This will help you balance out the calories they are getting from treats with the amount they are getting from food. Incorporate real-life rewards for your puppy's training. One of the best things you can do when training your puppy is to practice identifying what it is that they want in a particular moment and then using that as a reinforcer and reward for their behavior. It's not always about treats! For instance, they might want your attention, access to the yard, to go for a walk, or to play. By using these real-life rewards from the start with your puppy, only using treats to get better focus or to teach a brand new behavior, you'll be on the right track for fading out food treats later on in life. If your puppy has decreased energy. If your puppy is weak. If your puppy shows signs of hypoglycemia low blood sugar — abnormal gait walking , weakness, seizures, and even coma. If multiple dogs in your home or among your circle of friends are also experiencing decreased appetite. If you know your pup has recently gotten into the trash or dirty laundry. If your puppy got into cleaning agents mop water, freshly cleaned toilet, etc. If any toys are recently missing or destroyed. If they've recently been spending time at the dog park, doggy daycare, or any other group of dogs. If your puppy was just vaccinated. If the whites of their eyes, their gums, or the inside of their ears are yellow or even yellowish. See the photo below as an example of a dog's eye that is yellow. For a growing puppy, a good, well-balanced diet is extremely important. Puppies have unique nutritional requirements and therefore need diets specially formulated for their optimal health and growth. You are laying the foundation of a healthy adult when you properly feed your puppy. A well-balanced puppy diet will help: Achieve a healthy growth rate — not too rapid and not too slow. This is extra important for large and giant breed puppies. Support proper immune functions Prevent the possible occurrence of developing orthopedic issues in the legs and hips When you are looking for the right diet, you want to purchase food with the AAFCO American Association of Feed Control Official certification. This is the organization that supervises the entire pet food industry. An ideal diet will also have completed a feeding trial before it is marketed. You want to feed a diet formulated for puppies based on their size small breed versus large breed formulations are different. A good puppy diet should contain the proper levels of DHA. About the author Dr. Beth Turner Beth Turner is a veterinarian with over 20 years of experience. She graduated from North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine and following graduation, she began her career as an associate veterinarian and worked closely with the local shelter. In she accomplished her dream of practice ownership, designing and building her own clinic. Another meaningful role, while running her clinic, was serving as her county's shelter veterinarian. This gave her the opportunity to help improve the lives of many animals in her community as well as work with the rescue she loved. She sold her practice in to move across the country. But what can you do if your puppy is not eating, or isn't eating enough? Veterinarian Joanna Gale, BVetMed, a Mars Petcare expert, explains how much your puppy should eat and gives the lowdown on why young dogs sometimes skip meals, how to get them to eat, and what signs indicate something is seriously wrong. Exhaustion Puppies go-go-go until they suddenly crash into a sleeping pile of cuteness. Your little one may simply need a nap before he's ready to chow down. As long as your pup digs into his bowl at the next mealtime, it's OK for him to miss one feeding. Distraction If there's a party going on, a new person or pet in the house, or an opportunity to play, your puppy might be too excited to eat. Your four-legged friend should be ready to eat once things settle down again. Stress Has anything changed in your puppy's environment recently? For instance, a new home, pet, or person? If surroundings have changed, that can cause puppies to act differently. It may just be a matter of your puppy adjusting. But make sure feeding times are as calm for your pet as possible and consider placing your puppy's food bowl away from other pets' feeding areas. Vaccinations Just like in people, pets can feel a little blah after getting a shot. Fatigue and reduced appetite are normal side effects of puppy vaccinations , but they shouldn't last longer than a day. Finicky Eater Many pet parents assume that if puppies aren't eating, it's because they don't like the food. But, Gale says, "Most healthy puppies have a good appetite and aren't fussy about their kibble. If you add human food, you're unbalancing the meal that's been carefully formulated for puppies. And your puppy may end up picking out the bits that he likes and leaving the rest. Too Many Snacks It's important that puppies learn good manners with some basic positive reinforcement training. But teaching young pups the do's and don'ts usually requires lots of treats. If your puppy is filling up on treats, he may not be hungry for his normal meal. If that's the case, use pieces of his regular kibble or try buying specific training treats as incentives during training sessions so he gets proper nutrition throughout the day. Illness A complete loss of appetite could mean your puppy is sick, particularly if he is listless or quiet, Gale says. The problem could be anything from a virus to eating something that isn't food hello, little shoe chewer. It's essential for puppies to regularly refuel. Growing bodies need lots of nutrients. So if your puppy is acting like his goofy, normal self but hasn't eaten for a full day, call your vet for advice. Is your puppy also refusing water? Then ring your vet after a half-day of no eating or drinking, Gale recommends. If your puppy becomes inactive or starts to vomit or have diarrhea, it's best to see your vet right away. Diarrhea and vomiting can quickly dehydrate a puppy and could indicate that something is seriously wrong. How to Get a Puppy to Eat Again If your puppy has other symptoms or has missed an entire day of eating, seek veterinary care. Otherwise, there are a few things you can do at home to encourage your pup to eat his next meal. And, make sure mealtimes are calm and relaxed. One other secret to enticing your pup to eat is to mix wet and dry puppy food. It's a change that's still nutritionally balanced and appropriate for puppies. Like human babies, puppies have tiny stomachs and need to eat several small meals a day. As your puppy grows, you can feed larger amounts less frequently. Your veterinarian can recommend a schedule, but Gale says these are the general guidelines: 4 meals a day: Recently weaned puppies of all sizes need four meals a day. This chart helps break down the feeding schedule by your puppy's breed size. Always discuss the best feeding schedule for your puppy with your vet. Puppies need varying amounts of food, depending on the dog's size and breed. For a starting point, check the feeding guides on puppy food packages. But remember, Gale says, that the feeding guides list the total daily amount—so split that amount equally into the number of meals that's right for your puppy's age. For example, if it says your 3-month-old puppy needs 1 cup of food a day, divide that by four. So you would feed your pup a quarter cup of kibble four times a day. Your veterinarian can also help determine if the amount of food needs to be adjusted based on your dog's growth and weight at each well-visit. Young dogs need the extra nutrients they get in puppy food for proper growth. So if your furry pal is refusing to eat, it's best to check in with your vet especially if your pup has skipped several meals. Once your adorable fur ball is chowing down again, you can relax knowing your spunky pup is getting everything a growing dog needs. Was this page helpful? It is important for senior dogs to have a feeding routine, that the food bowl remain in the same area of the house so that they know where to find it, and that they have a rug or yoga mat to stand on while eating to avoid slipping or having trouble standing on hard floors. If your senior dog has gone longer than 24 hours without eating, they should see their veterinarian for a thorough physical examination and possible diagnostics to investigate the cause of their loss of appetite. Is Your Dog a Puppy? Small breed puppies, especially, are at a high risk of hypoglycemia low blood sugar and should be watched closely for signs of lethargy or collapse if they are not eating. If this happens, they should be treated on an emergency basis. Some puppies may not like larger kibble, as it can be hard for their puppy teeth to chew, especially if they are just transitioning to solid food. This can be remedied by mixing in water and letting it soak to create more of a porridge consistency, or the kibble can be mixed with canned food as well. If your puppy still will not eat, they should be seen right away by a veterinarian. If they are also lethargic, vomiting, or having diarrhea, they should be seen on an emergency basis. A newly adopted dog can take days or weeks to settle into their new home. It is important to ensure that they are given a quiet place to eat, away from other pets or children that may interrupt them. However, if they are lethargic, vomiting, or having diarrhea, or go more than 48 hours without eating anything, they should be examined by a veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical conditions. Did Anything Change in Your Household? Some dogs may be sensitive enough that a change in their environment may cause inappetence. Examples include a new addition to the family whether a new pet or a new baby , construction, having people over, or even a change in the location of the food and water bowls. Some dogs with separation anxiety even expect their loved one to be in the room while they eat, and will stop eating if their human leaves the room. While this is not necessarily a health concern, it is a sign that your dog may have severe anxiety that needs to be addressed. Calming chews such as Composure or Solliquin may be helpful, and calming pheromone collars or diffusers such as Adaptil can be beneficial as well. However, if you are concerned that your dog may have severe separation anxiety, consider consulting with a board-certified veterinary behaviorist for help. Did You Switch Dog Foods? This also allows your dog to get used to the new food over time, rather than making a sudden switch. Is Your Dog Pregnant or in Heat? Early in pregnancy , your dog may have a reduced or absent appetite. If your dog is in the middle or late part of her gestation, she may eat less because her stomach has less room to expand due to the presence of puppies, but she should make up for this by eating a smaller amount more frequently. Regardless of what point of gestation your dog is in, if she has not eaten in over 24 hours, your veterinarian should be called right away to ensure that everything is okay. Dogs in heat may also have a decreased appetite, which is considered normal. However, if she goes longer than 48 hours without eating anything, she should be checked by her veterinarian. If she is lethargic, vomiting, having diarrhea, or drinking and urinating more than usual, she should be seen by her veterinarian right away, as this could indicate an infection in the uterus known as pyometra. Is Your Dog Diabetic? If your dog is diabetic and will not eat, this could be an indication that something is seriously wrong. If your veterinarian advised you to give a half dose of insulin if your dog skips one meal, do so, but alert your veterinarian immediately if your dog skips another meal. If your diabetic dog skips a meal, is lethargic, nonresponsive, or vomiting or having diarrhea, they should be seen by a veterinarian immediately, as this could be an indication of hypoglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis, both of which are life-threatening if not treated right away. It is not unusual for your dog to skip a meal or two after a surgery. You may try tempting your dog to eat with a spoonful of canned food or boneless, skinless, boiled chicken on top of their kibble. Better yet, ask your veterinarian for a few cans of a prescription gastrointestinal diet to feed for the first few days after surgery. These foods are highly palatable, are easily digestible, and can help counteract some of the gastrointestinal upset that can happen after surgery and anesthesia. If your dog had oral or facial surgery, your veterinarian may recommend feeding only canned food for two or more weeks. This also means that your dog should not receive hard treats or chew on hard toys until they are declared healed at their recheck appointment. If your dog is refusing to eat the prescribed canned food, reach out to your veterinarian in case there are any post-operative complications. Heat canned food for a few seconds in the microwave make sure to take it out of the metal can and put it into a microwave-safe bowl. Canned food can become scorching hot quickly, so feel the food first to avoid any burned tongues. Try mixing some plain, boneless, skinless boiled chicken and rice with their kibble to encourage them to eat. Add a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora or Advita on top of the food. Not only can this make the food more palatable, but it can also help any inflamed or irritated intestine heal by rebalancing a healthy gastrointestinal flora. If you have tried these tricks and your dog continues to refuse his food, he should be seen by his veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical conditions. Unless explicitly prescribed by your veterinarian, your dog should not be given any over-the-counter gastrointestinal medications like Imodium or Pepto Bismol , as these could cause serious side effects or even interact with medications that your veterinarian may want to give. It is best to consult with your veterinarian before attempting to treat symptoms at home. Featured image: iStock. Help us make PetMD better Was this article helpful? A family member moving out Relationship break-up A change in your routine, such as working shifts or nights Moving his bowl to a different area All of these changes may upset your Labrador and cause him to be disinterested in food. Multiple changes should be done one at a time. If your dog has a stomach upset, vomiting, and diarrhea , you may need to contact your vet sooner. Your dog may have also eaten something toxic. Take care with foods like grapes or chocolate, and never leave these where your Lab can reach them, as even a tiny amount can be highly poisonous. Medication or Vaccinations Some medications may cause a reduced appetite or nausea. If your Lab is taking a new course of medication and this occurs, you should inform your vet as there may be a more suitable alternative. If your Labrador Retriever has had his recent vaccinations, sometimes these can cause adverse reactions, including loss of appetite. The good news is this should only be brief. Ensure your Lab is drinking plenty of fresh water and keeping himself hydrated. If your Lab finds it difficult to keep hydrated, you can always try a pet water fountain such as the Petsafe Drinkwell from Amazon. The free-falling stream of water entices your dog to drink and keeps his water constantly clean. Dental Pain When your Labrador suddenly stops eating his kibble, it could be because the food is causing him some pain in his mouth. It might result from gum disease, an abscess, or a damaged tooth. Choose a more fragrant food. Try choosing a better quality food that has a powerful meaty smell. Add some warm water or unsalted chicken or beef broth. Add a topping. You can add wet food or other toppings such as plain yogurt, egg, chicken, other meats, or fish. I often do this to mix things up for my dog. Try hand-feeding, as your Lab might need a little TLC! Exercise your dog before feeding so that he works up an appetite. However, wait an hour before putting his bowl down which helps prevent bloat GDV. If you have been hand-feeding your Lab, try stopping for a while. Remove his bowl after 15 minutes and then only put it down again a few hours later. Limit treats to training times only. Try keeping his mealtimes separate from yours. Put him in another room at your mealtimes. Do not feed your dog table scraps. Try switching to a ceramic bowl instead. Give him lots of praise when he eats from his bowl. Make feeding time fun — try putting a lid on his food, so he must remove it first. They are good, especially if your dog is easily distracted by his environment. This bestseller has almost 75, positive reviews! I know initial vet visits can be costly, but so are treatment methods if your Lab is diagnosed with a condition or disease! I would recommend having a decent pet insurance policy in place. This will always give you peace of mind and avoid unexpected vet costs. But if your dog has gone more than two days without eating you should call your vet. Labradors should eat at least twice a day at hour intervals to prevent bloat GDV. Puppies under 6 months of age should be fed more often as they need small meals throughout the day. Hopefully, these suggestions will fix the situation and return your Labrador to his everyday eating habits. Related Posts You May Like:. Picky dogs can have their appetite perked up by being offered another food or treat, but unwell dogs will refuse even their favorite meals. Partial anorexia is when a dog eats, but not enough to keep him healthy and fit. There are many reasons why a dog or puppy might go off their food. If a dog eats nothing for a few days or loses his appetite over a period of time this can be a sign of a serious illness. A mild illness, like a tummy upset, could cause him not to eat for a day or two. Problems with his teeth or pain can also cause him to eat less — just like you would. But there are other reasons for a dog to stop eating. Lack of appetite can be caused by changes in the environment or emotional upsets. Not eating can also be a learned response. But first things first. You could have a medical emergency on your hands. First try and see if you can figure out a reason. He tries to, picks at his food but then backs off. Check his body all over for signs of an injury, bloating or any unusual lumps at bumps. Are there any signs of problems with his teeth, mouth or throat. Check his stools and whether he is passing urine. Does he have a fever? If your dog looks really sick — withdrawn, lethargic or unusually quiet, he may be in trouble. He needs to see a vet without delay. Dogs with severe tummy pain may just take to their beds and not make a sound. Bloat or some kind of obstruction from eating trash are possibilities your vet might want to consider. You can also try and offer food again in a few hours. Dogs can go without food for a few days without any adverse effects on their health. There are many reasons why a dogs go off their food besides health problems. Or even if he seems just a little bit reserved. You dog might just not be hungry. Or bored with his food. Someone could have slipped him too many treats. Have you changed food brands? Some dogs are very suspicious of unknown tastes and smells. A new bag of kibble you just opened might be off — check and smell the food. When dogs have emotional upsets it often puts them off their food — just like our children. Have you moved house? Even a simple thing like a new food bowl or changing the place where you feed him can have him turning up his nose at food. Most dogs also stop eating for a day or two when their owners go off on holiday. Are there visitors who might be upsetting him? Or a new pet? But, if he normally has a healthy appetite, keep an eye on him, watch and wait. One of the things you need to watch for is that your dog drinks water. Right away. If your dog is drinking a lot more water than usual and refusing to eat this can also be a sign of an infection or a serious disease. Just like people, dogs get tummy bugs. These minor bugs are not usually serious and most dogs will carry on behaving normally throughout. And they will drink enough water to replace lost fluids. Veterinary advice is to not feed your dog for about 12 hours after a tummy upset. Then start by feeding small amounts of bland food every few hours on the first day. This allows the digestive tract to recover. Increase the amount of food gradually and if it seems that the problem is solved you can start reintroducing normal food. A lack of appetite accompanied by absence of bowel movements, or by straining, may indicate a bowel obstruction. Illness aside, the vast majority of dogs that go off their food are not in the throes of a medical emergency. Many dogs that gradually stop eating do it because they want you to feed them different food. If you ate the same old pellets every day, you might get bored too. Having said that, most kibble fed dogs consume their daily ration with gusto. So why do some dogs stop eating dry food? There may a perfectly good reasons. Older dogs, or those with dental problems or painful jaws may find them hard to chew. Or in winter the food might just be too cold. The solution here is simple — add a bit of warm water. But most often the reason is that someone added something tasty to the kibble at some point. And the dog has really appreciated that addition. It might have been some tasty gravy or some after dinner scraps. So the dog turns his nose up, and what happens next? Which he does! Job done. Or not. No — he is prepared to hold out for the tasty additions he has come to expect. So what do you do? Or paying a small mortgage for fancy food in a pretty pouch? The bad news is, your dog will make you feel like a bit of a heel whilst you go about teaching him not to be a fussy eater. He may also lose a bit of weight which could be a bonus. Which brand should you try? People often ask us which brand of dog food they should try, especially when their dog is refusing several brands. We simply cannot advise you on which brand of food you should feed your dog. That is a matter for you, and possibly your vet, to decide in consultation with your wallet. But be very wary of switching brands on more than one occasion. You can end up in a cycle of constantly switching from one food to another whilst your dog gets more and more picky. Your dog has learned to play you. How long can a dog go without eating Forget about hours. If he has access to water, a fit and well dog can last days without food. And most healthy, well balanced, dogs will give in and eat what is put in front of them within two or three days. So if you want to, you can safely refuse to feed a fit and well dog alternatives, until his hunger gets the better of him and he gives in and eats what you provide. That includes mentally well. Or a dog that has a health or emotional reason for not eating. A dog who has a chronic illness may need a special diet. And those recovering from a health problem could need some coaxing to recover their appetite. So do dogs who are recovering from a serious illness or have pain from recent surgery or conditions like hip dysplasia. This is only partly because they are less active and need less food. Various metabolic changes also take place when the body is under stress. Your vet will probably advise you on what to feed your sick, injured or recovering dog. He is likely to suggest that you tempt your dog with foods that he enjoys. Meals should be nourishing, easy to eat and to digest. You should offer smaller meals more frequently. Dogs find moist, warm food with a strong flavour more appetising. Canned dog foods, meat, fish, and eggs fit the bill. Sense of smell and taste can decline with age, and lower activity levels may mean that the dog simply needs less food. Most older dog gain weight because of inactivity. Those who keep losing weight usually have an underlying long term health problem, problems with their digestion or difficulty in swallowing. So if your older dog it not eating and keeps losing weight you should have him checked out by your vet. When older or chronically ill dogs eat too little over a long time they lose, not only body weight, but also lean mass muscle. Labrador puppies usually have voracious appetites, and will eat pretty much anything with relish. Even if your puppy seems otherwise well, talk to your vet if he stops eating altogether for more than a few hours. Moving home can be very stressful for a dog. He may need a little time to settle in first. His emotional health is the priority here, not your ability to control his diet. That can wait a week or two. But what happens when your dog eats everything besides the food they should? Fussy eaters Your dog that is happily settled in your homes, in great health, and refuses to eat the food allocated for him. He happily scoffs treats, or food of a different make? What about dogs that will only eat if you wet their food? Or pour gravy on it. These are the fussy or picky eaters of the dog world. These are often dogs that are having a great time making their adoring humans run around after them — providing their favorite delicacies — and generally giving their dogs what is very often a completely unbalanced diet. Just read on for the cure. How to cure a fussy eater The cure for a fussy eater is straightforward. Here are the steps: Decide what you want your dog to eat and offer him a small quantity in a bowl. Set a timer for five minutes. When the timer goes off, take the bowl away. Do not feed him any treats whatsoever until his next mealtime. At the next time, offer the dog a small quantity of exactly the same food again. For exactly five minutes. Do not feed him anything else. Make sure he has clean drinking water available at all times. Rinse and repeat Build up quantities as soon as he starts eating again. But you will win this battle. Observe your Labrador for about a day or so, and see if their appetite improves. When a dog has an upset stomach, they are going to drink a lot of fluids to compensate for it. So, if your Labrador retriever is not eating and not drinking water, take them to the vet immediately. This might likely be something more serious. Infection If your labrador lack of appetite is accompanied by them seems lethargic or unlike their usual behavior, then you should go to the vet as soon as you can. Infections could cause your dog to be sluggish and generally not themselves. Infections can be treated with antibiotics, though, so make sure to get your pet to the vet right away. Behavioural Issues Sometimes, your dog could be ignoring their food for purely behavioral reasons. They might not like their food, or they might have gotten bored with it. There have been many cases where kibble-fed dogs become bored with their food and start to ignore it as a way of prompting their owners to give them food that they like more. If you have recently fed your Lab something they like, they might ignore their food to get you to feed them that particular food. Your dog may be trying to get their way with you. Picky eating in dogs is not something that goes away by you succumbing to their demands. You should be able to make them eat the proper food with sufficient effort in exploring options. Take note, though, that picky eating is not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. Your Lab could be a picky eater due to a chronic illness or because of age. As a pet owner, learn to explore your options, and you will eventually find the type of food that your Labrador would be willing to eat. In the same manner, vets could also prescribe dogs a specific type of food for an illness. Instead of forcing your Labrador retriever to eat food that they do not like, try and talk it out with your vet to see if you can find other options. Serious Illness If it is not a stomach bug or behavioral issues, your labrador lack of appetite and lethargic behavior could be indicative of a more serious underlying illness. The best thing to do is to consult a vet and proceed according to their instructions. This will give you the space to consider the next course of action. Labrador pups have more voracious appetites and eat a lot more than adult Labs. So, if your puppy is not eating well or is rejecting their food, you should contact your vet immediately. Lethargy in puppies may be more difficult to assess since they need a lot of rest and can be found asleep for a significant portion of the day. But, if you notice that they are inactive or act sluggish even in the hours where they are usually very active, schedule an appointment with your vet straight away. Major Life Changes Significant life changes could also affect dogs and their appetites. Like people, Labs also need some time to adjust to new situations. Part of that means that they may not eat as much as they did before. Take note, though, that if this lack of appetite persists, and your dog is still less energetic than usual, this might be because of something else. Depression in dogs is a real thing and could be caused by losing a companion or significant shifts in their life dynamics. Be sure to give your Lab the love and attention they deserve and, hopefully, they will be back to normal in a couple of weeks at most. If your Labrador retriever continues to behave oddly, contact your vet. Other Reasons Apart from the reasons listed above, there could be other reasons why your Labrador might not be eating well. Old age, oral pain, and diseases cause them to be less active, which, in turn, lessens their appetite. What you should do is observe your dog and how they behave so that you can easily watch out for serious implications. Conclusion Labrador retrievers are well known for being energetic and voracious eaters. So, if your labrador suddenly seems lethargic and loses appetite, there may be a reason for that. A few possible reasons for these include infections, behavioral problems, a severe ailment, or having an upset stomach. This is not an exhaustive list, however, and your Lab may be sluggish and not eating for reasons that we have not listed here. We advise that you contact your vet instead to address this problem. After all, your Lab needs your care and attention, so you should always watch out if they are suddenly behaving erratically. Post navigation.
He is extremely obedient and a fast learner. Unfortunately, there was a sudden death in the family and Monty's foster carer needs to travel to look after the family and cannot take Monty along, so we have to move him ASAP! Since his previous owners did not keep him up to date with his vaccinations, we cannot book him into a boarding kennel. Here is what our foster carer has to say about Monty: Monty is a lovely boy. He likes to stay by your side and follow you around the house. He is inquisitive and curious. He likes to look out the window and watch the world go by. That said, he is just as happy to wait patiently on his mat, while you make dinner or sit at the desk. He loves a cuddle on the lounge but knows not to jump up without permission. He learns quickly what is ok and what is verboten! While the family is eating he knows to sit in his mat…. But of course does sneak to the table for a scrap or two. He walks really well. He can handle a jogging pace easily without being silly. He likes to join in with the grandchildren playing, but can be a bit too boisterous for the little ones. He enjoys fun games with the 10yr old, playing fetch. With me he loves to play chase and can get crazy with zoomies if you want to really work him up. Like most boxers he has a lot of energy and needs regular walks and play. He has not had one toilet accident inside. He makes himself known when he wants to go outside. He sleeps the whole night through on a mat in the bedroom. He snores but does not fuss or whine. You can wash him in the shower with a hand held shower head and dry him with a hair dryer. Please let us know if you think you can help Monty - a warning: you may fall in love with him in no time! Physical Appearance[ ] The dogs shown are three different breeds, all of which are rabid and show no fear of man or the protagonists. Their names are Monty, Jacques, and Raber. Monty is the white poodle the alpha of the pack , Jacques is the Rottweiler, and Raber is the brown boxer. The dogs each have rows of sharp teeth, covered in foam from frothing at the mouth. With the rabies virus controlling them, they show no fear of anyone. It's possible they turned rabid after being left by their owners, forced to live on the streets of New York City, and possibly been bitten by a carrier who had the rabies virus. Personality[ ] Not much is known about the dogs' history but it's possible they use to be lovable mutts who were loyal to their owners until they were abandoned by them. As their life on the streets increased, the dogs grew more aggressive and fierce as they chase away any intruders, including humans away from their territory. Then, at some point in their life, they had been bitten by possibly other rabid dogs, or another carrier and became infected with rabies. The virus turned them into rabid, vicious animals who show no fear of man or animal, no matter what size. Appearance[ ] Monty, Jacques, and Raber first appeared after Samson , Bridget , Larry , and Nigel narrowly escaped from being crushed by the compacter of the Hoyt Sanitation Truck on Fifth Avenue after they scared the truck's driver. After the protagonists walk down the street looking for the Statue Of Liberty, the dogs appear behind the truck and Bridget comment that they should be fun for Samson. Instead of standing his ground, Samson tells Nigel to grab on to Bridget as Larry holds onto her back and they make a run for it. The animals find an alley, which also has a dead end and watch the dogs run past them, thinking they're scot free. Nigel even teases that they're stupid and that they could've taken them. However, that all changed when dogs finally found them and begin slowly approaching them, growling viciously and showing they're frothy, sharp teeth. Larry tries to improvise by barking back but his impersonating bark has no effect on the dogs who have better barks. Bridget isn't afraid and tells them that even if they got bark, Samson's got roar and tells Samson to show them. Samson tries to dig deep and be the lion but the sight of Monty frothing at the mouth took away his chance. The animals reach the dead end as the dogs slowly close in on them, then Samson spots the sewer gutter and tells Larry to coil, which he does and grabs on. Then, Samson pokes Bridget's rear which sends Larry up to a beam, allowing him to open the gutter. Samson tells Bridget to jump down, followed by Nigel, Samson himself, and Larry as the dogs start to run towards them. Larry gets stuck at the small opening of the gutter as Jacques and Raber run towards him, but manages to squeeze through just as the dogs stopped and continue barking as well as Monty squeezing his head through the opening, looking down. It's unknown what happened to the dogs after the protagonists escaped. It's possible they may have continued roaming through the New York City streets until being captured by animal control and taken to an Animal Quarantine Center where they were tested and possibly, euthanized. Gallery[ Ah ha! We found you! Jacques and Raber close in You got roar huh? Try roar to this! We got you right where we want you! We had no idea why although he assured us we are not being down graded. At first the two pooches were somewhat confused not seeing their familiar friends at class, but that did not deter them from having mild to rough games with the youngsters. Halfway through the session the trainer first introduced Sophie and Monty and then us. In summarizing the introduction he said he chose the two because they are guaranteed non-aggressive, well behaved and the owners as handlers know how to control them when they get out of hand. He chose them as he knew they will now how to introduce puppies to bigger more mature dogs by amongst others rolling the pups without showing any aggression. Some breeders thought that another male had gotten to their female and the resulting brown looking puppy was a mutt. Others knew what they were and put them down as they did not want anyone to know they were producing anything other than traditional colored shepherds. However, with the canine genomic project and strong breeders who stood their ground for this color of GSD, they are beginning to be seen in several countries. I have always admired the liver coloration and wanted to incorporate liver into my breeding program; however, I found it to be difficult in the beginning to find them especially with AKC full registration as the breeders that did allow them to live, only sold on limited registration for fear that they were not as healthy as their colored siblings. I came across a litter of four liver female puppies and between myself and my best friend, Dawn, we rounded up three of the four, and the last sister went to a fellow liver lover. My search was far from over since the liver gene is inherited autosomal recessive I had to find a male that carried liver or was liver himself. Finally, I found an awesome four year old male, Dutch, for sale. His owner drove him to my kennel and I was in love as he is a big social, warm, gentle giant but will protect in a heart beat. Shortly after I found him, the liver pups arrived and I knew I wanted to go with chocolate names for my liver shepherds. Chocolate is a much more flattering word for these majestically colored GSD. She violated our agreement. She is a proven scammer. The color has been apart of the original gene pool from the start. The puppies born a brown chocolate color are registered as Liver. It is a recessive gene and in many pedigree's. In order for a GSD to produce Liver, both parents must pose the b gene. Brown is incomplete black. Thus giving all areas of the GSD that would normally appear black be a chocolate color. Since the colors and patterns are separate, they can come in all patterns: saddle back, bi-color, sable, solids, and various patterns. We are looking forward to meeting like minded people that want to work with the dilutes as well. We are open to discussing medical and color questions for anyone interested. Scroll through the albums and if you do not find what you are looking for please send me a message. Keep in mind you do not have to have a facebook page to see this page. Bo is always happy to go places with us. He frequents local stores with us all the time and is a perfect gentleman. He is always looking forward to accompanying us for daily ranch chores too. He is great with all the animals. He especially loves puppies and is so gentle with them, he is a great helper in socializing our litters with big dogs. He has great food drive, loves learning new things and always does his best to please you. He also loves doing scent work and I hope to get him entered into some trials soon. He is naturally protective of our home but as soon as I give him the okay he will be the first to greet you for pets and is known to try and sneak in your lap if you sit down! He is an easy-going, gentle, super sweet boy who is always steady and fearless. Like our other boys he can also have a goofy streak at times and he can always put a smile on your face! We just love Bo and are really looking forward to incorporating his lines into our breeding program. The picture of puppies in the bathtub is a past litter of German Shepherd puppies from Robin Blue. But for now, beside your bed is the best place for your puppy to sleep — it will help them feel safe. Puppies like their crates rather cave-like; we suggest covering it with a blanket to block out light, but keep the front open so that they can see outwards. Make sure to make it snug inside with something like a vet bed or a blanket, or why not take it up a notch with a heat pad or hot water bottle to recreate the feeling of their mother. Nothing feels more comforting than that. Before you head to bed, take your puppy out for one last round of loo-going. Set your bedtime at a later time too — midnight sounds about right. Come back calmly, and place your puppy in the crate and turn out the light. Stuff you should know about Sleep Training your Labrador Your puppy will wake up several times in the night and will need the toilet at least once! Be prepared for not-so-deep sleeps and tired mornings — just for the first few weeks. Having them sleep next to you is only temporary. Consistency is key! As for you, full nights of sleep will start getting closer and closer. Alone Training How can I teach my Labrador puppy to be ok on their own? Start by feeding your puppy in their crate during meal times. If they seem worried by you leaving, stay in view, and just pop right outside their confinement area. Keep it short and sweet: No need to stay away for long, 60 seconds tops will do for now. Repeat: Do this at least once a day to make progress go steady and smoothly. Socialisation Exercises To Do this week Letting your Labrador puppy explore the garden Besides the gnomes and questionable garden furniture you may have, letting your puppy explore your own garden is a great and safe way to start showing them the sounds, lights and wonders of the outside world. Exploring different surfaces exercise Make sure that the surfaces you use are safe — nothing too crazy just yet. Gather surfaces such as An oven tray with a small layer of water A piece of astro turf A carpet tile A large piece of tin foil, cardboard or something crinkly PRO TIP: Set up for this exercise in the room your puppy spends most of their time in — it will help them to feel safe and confident. Pop the surfaces out safely on the floor and allow your puppy to investigate them. Nobody has ever enjoyed walking on those. Remember to be patient! Lucky for you — teaching them their name is easy peasy. Say their name in a happy jolly tone and reward with a treat. Repeat five times, 5 and take a break. Practice this 2 or 3 times a day so they get the hang of it. Teach your puppy to sit Teaching your puppy how to sit is a popular one. The first two are far more common though. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow it up with a food reward. In puppy logic, stinky means yummy. How to do it Start at home; where there are no distractions. Just make sure to shut off Gogglebox in the background. Recall — How to teach our Labrador puppy to come back when called Your puppy already knows their name at this point, so this should be a walk in the park. How to do it Treats and a cheerful voice will be what works here. Do these exercises before meal times so your puppy is more motivated. Practice this 5 times a day and in 3 different places in your house and garden to get them used to coming to you in all settings. How to do it Show your puppy that you have their favourite toy, and start to get them excited about it. When they show interest, throw it a little bit away from you. They will likely follow it and pick it up. If they do, encourage them back to you with your voice, so remember to sound happy! Swap the toy for a treat or another toy and do the process again. Repeat this about 5 times. Instead create more distance and excitement sounds to get them to come to you — spaniels like to show off, so they will likely want to parade what they have! Always swap the toy for something when they have it, this could be a treat or another toy. Resource guarding occurs when we force puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. For breeds like Labradors who are designed to want to hold things in their mouths, this is pretty important! Resource guarding is when a dog protects a resource from being taken by someone else — dog or human. For some reason, there is a solid list of things puppies find irresistible: Socks. These smart, social dogs are known for their amiable temperaments and their patience. Traditionally bred as hunting dogs, Labs also are among the most popular service dogs, acting as guide dogs for blind people and as therapy dogs. By socializing these dogs early, you can tap into their natural instincts as protectors and companions. Socialize Puppies Labs are natural born people pleasers. Introduce your Lab puppy to as many new people and places as possible during the early months of its life. Keep each new meeting and experience positive and upbeat. Doing this will reinforce your Lab's natural tendency to be friendly and accepting of everyone. If you have young children in the home, be sure to socialize them to the animal as well as the reverse. Although Labs are patient and tolerant, they may still nip at a child who teases or hurts them during play. Make sure everyone knows the boundaries and rules. Exercise Every Day Labrador retrievers are high energy dogs, which is part of the reason they are such great pets for active families. But if Labs aren't given sufficient exercise, they can quickly become bored. This often leads to destructive behavior and other common behavior problems , such as barking, chewing, and digging. It's also why Labs are not well-suited for apartment living; they're too big and too active. Plan on giving your Lab an hour or more of exercise each day. Most Labs love long walks or a game of fetch. These are the perfect way to burn off your Lab's energy. Take advantage of their innate trainability by starting an obedience program as soon as you bring your Labrador retriever home. You can work on basic obedience commands on your own, or sign up for a dog obedience class with a local dog trainer. Classes are a great way to train your Lab while socializing at the same time. Since Labs get to be fairly large and have a tendency to pull on the leash, make walking on a loose leash your first priority. You should also teach your Lab to "come," "drop it," and "fetch," so you can take advantage of its natural tendency for retrieving. Use Positive Reinforcement Training Their eagerness to learn, playfulness, affectionate natures, and their love of treats make Labrador retrievers fantastic candidates for positive reinforcement dog training. Reward their good behaviors with a small treat, a game, or some cuddle time with you. You'll find your Lab is soon offering you the behaviors you like with little prompting. If you decide to use treats in your training, remember that Labs have a tendency to become overweight. Plan on a Long Adolescence One of the most endearing qualities of Labrador retrievers is that they remain very puppy-like long after they've reached adulthood. The downside is that their energy level and tendency to get into mischief continues well into adulthood as well. Therefore, it pays to have behavior management tools handy. The training to become a service animal will vary depending on what the dog will be doing; some are trained to be animal companions to sick children and adults in the hospital, while others are trained to serve as seeing-eye dogs. Others may provide assistance to people with mental illnesses, or behavioral problems. Check the requirements for licensing and training where you live; some places have more strict rules and requirements for service dogs than others. Problems and Proofing Behavior Many Labrador retrievers are happiest and the most well-behaved when they have a job to do. Consider getting involved with a dog sport or training your Lab as a service animal or pet therapy dog. Crate train your Labrador so it doesn't have the run of the house when you're not there to supervise Provide your Lab with a variety of interesting toys and chews to keep it from getting bored. Continue practicing basic obedience commands; it reinforces your Lab's training and provides mental stimulation. No matter what training you decide on, keeping your Lab busy and active is sure to keep one of those famous Lab smiles on its face. Print Early obedience first step to better hunting dog Labrador puppies start out sweet and innocent. All you want to do is cuddle up with your pup and love them! And you should! But rest assured the innocence will not last. As your pup gains confidence and courage, they will begin to test you in many ways. That is why you must obedience train your Labrador puppy. Early obedience training is key to establishing borders and boundaries that will help your puppy grow, learn, and adjust with a good attitude. There is no shortcut to doing this, just use the name often when you talk to your puppy. Over time, the pup will start to respond to the name. Socialization, while not technically obedience training, is the single most important thing you can teach your puppy during the first few months of life. If you are not sure how to do this, refer to this post. Tools needed to obedience train Labrador puppy You will need a few tools to teach your puppy obedience. The products I recommend I believe are a good value or good investment for anyone working to train or maintain training on their retriever. When possible, I include links to the product. Some of these links may be Amazon or other affiliate links in which I am paid a small commission at no cost to you. All opinions and recommendations are my own. Collar — You should purchase a size appropriate collar for your new puppy. You may have to buy new ones as your dog grows, but it is important for your puppy to get used to wearing a collar early on. A simple nylon adjustable collar works great. Chain collar — If your puppy is more than a few months old, a chain or prong collar is extremely helpful in teaching obedience, but they must be used correctly. For more information on how to put a chain collar on your dog correctly refer to this video. A longer lead, called a check cord, is also useful for teaching HERE and retrieving. You can learn more about that here. Heeling stick optional — While optional, a heeling stick can be especially helpful in teaching basic obedience. Treats — Treats are good for teaching very young puppies. I use treats for pups under 12 weeks of age, but treats should be discontinued rather quickly. When to start basic puppy obedience training Obedience training can and should start within the first couple weeks of having your puppy home. Young puppies are ready and willing to learn and teaching obedience to a young puppy is much easier than teaching it to an older dog. How long should obedience sessions be? Most labs do not enjoy obedience training. For this reason, we aim to keep obedience sessions short, especially if your dog is under 4-months of age. Five to ten minutes of obedience a day can work wonders. Especially if you are consistent. Using rewards or praise to teach obedience Many people like to use treats or rewards for obedience training. And this can work, especially with very young dogs. But for hunting dogs, over the long-term treats can become a problem. We do not want our dogs, or the dogs we train to be obedient only because they are getting a food reward. We want them to be obedient because they understand their place in the family and respect the owners. To get these lasting results, we use praise words and petting and a reward that retrievers live for — retrieves! Well-timed praise is a particularly important part of dog training. A message that it is okay to ignore me the first 9 times! This simply means that after a few minutes of formal obedience training, we release the dog with an OKAY command and that means they can run around and be a dog. We then throw a bumper or plug a for the dog to retriever. We do this a few times with a lot of excitement and allow the dog to retrieve the bumper. For retriever breeds, this is often more effective than a food reward. Be careful that you are not letting your puppy get into bad habits with retrieving. For instance, if your puppy often goes out to retrieve the bumper but then runs away with it, or picks it up and drops it, do not continue doing retrieves. While retrieving is a reward for many Labs, it is not an excuse to engage in behaviors that are not going to be acceptable in the field. If you want to learn more about how to properly teach your Lab to retrieve, check out How can I teach my retriever puppy to fetch? Introduction to leash and nylon collar The very first step for any puppy obedience is to introduce your puppy to a regular collar and leash. This should be done in two separate steps, first the collar and then the leash. Introduce the collar by putting a nylon type collar on your puppy. This is normal and you should not react to it. Introducing the leash is a little different. We like to do this outside. After a few sessions of this introduction, you can start holding the leash by the end and walking with the puppy. When the puppy tries to run or walk away, hold tight to the leash, and just let the puppy get used to the resistance. Some puppies have a hard time with this and will growl or whine and whip themselves around at the pressure, but most will not. Remain calm and after a few sessions the puppy should get used to the resistance of the leash. Do not allow the puppy to pull you around. That will make for some bad behaviors that you will need to correct later. If you cannot control your puppy with just a regular collar and leash, you may need to move to a chain or prong collar to keep control. What commands to teach Lab puppy There are only four basic obedience commands that you need to teach your young puppy. Remember when it comes to commands, less is more. OKAY — this is a release command, basically tells your dog were done training, go be a dog. As your puppy grows and learns more, there are some other commands that may be needed, but for puppies I like to start with just the four above. Dog training requires consistency Before you start with obedience training, I want to make a note about the importance of consistency. Obedience training only works if you are consistent. This means that when you say a command, you expect the puppy to perform the command, and are willing to take steps to make the puppy perform the command. If you do not remain consistent in this expectation, you will confuse your dog and get poor results from your training. You and your family must be consistent! How to start obedience training Lab puppy The first command you want to start teaching your puppy is SIT. This is quite easy to teach with a small puppy but gets a little tougher as they get bigger. Then release the puppy with the OKAY command. Repeat this process several times, then stop. If your puppy is weeks old, you can repeat this training several times a day for only a couple minutes at a time. This will be a two-person job for a little while. The other person will put the food down a few feet from the puppy. Then release the puppy to eat saying OKAY. As the pup learns and understands the command better, you will no longer need a second person to hold the puppy. You must be a little careful here because young puppies do not have great bladder control and making them wait, even a few seconds, can mean the difference between an accident and them doing their business outside. But this is a great way to teach impulse control and manners to your puppy. I do not want to have to fight for a position by the door. You can usually start working on this within a week or two of teaching SIT. A great way to teach this command to young puppies is to use two people and sit in a long hallway, one at each end. Take turns calling your puppy with a HERE command. A toy or treat can often help the process. Let your puppy run around a bit but hold onto the end of the cord. Occasionally, call you puppy with a HERE command. It can be helpful at first to crouch down to encourage the puppy to run towards you. Then release the puppy with an OKAY command. Do this a few more times and repeat daily until the puppy is coming to you without you needing to pull the cord. It is also the command most of our clients struggle with the most. Mostly because they are using the wrong tool for the job. For heeling work, it is important that you work with a chain or prong collar. This will give you more control and stop the pulling and surging that many people struggle with. Using a chain or prong collar and a six-foot leash, start walking your puppy at your side. If your puppy is young, be sure to use a puppy chain collar which is smaller than chain collars for adult dogs. And make sure that you are putting it on correctly! An alternate tool to a chain collar and leash is the Wonder or Command Lead. These work great for teaching HEEL. As you start walking use gently tugs on the chain collar with the command HERE to keep your puppy at your side. If your puppy surges or pulls ahead, simply make a degree turn and start walking the other direction giving a sharp, upward tug on the chain collar and saying HEEL several times until the dog is back in a heeling position. Many of our clients have told us they never left their driveway the first few days! But if you are patient and consistent, your dog will quickly learn that if they want to go for a walk, they need to stay at your side. If you want to learn and progress in more obedience work, check out these obedience drills for retrievers. Final thoughts on how to teach your lab puppy obedience Teaching your puppy obedience may take a lot of patience, time and work, but it is such an important thing to do. You will never regret the time! A well-mannered dog is such a joy to be around both in the home and in the field. How to obedience train Labrador puppy.
