Your Golden Retriever puppy will go through a number of developmental stages throughout their first twelve weeks. Male Golden Retrievers generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand from 23 to 24 inches tall. Females are generally smaller weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. Golden Retriever puppy growth can also be quite sporadic. As an overall average, many Golden Retriever puppies will weigh just approximately 1. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. Before you sign up with any trainer, be sure to ask them what kind of training methods and tools they use, to avoid causing any physical or mental distress for your puppy. Your floor might look a little cluttered, but it helps to keep toys within reach for a quick redirection. Third, you can simply give the puppy a break if they are on a biting spree. You could step on the other side of a baby gate or put them in their pen to calm down a bit, and then resume the play. This communicates to the puppy that when they bite, they lose access to you and the fun stops. A common piece of advice when dealing with puppy biting is to yelp in response to their nip, as if you were another dog. Stunted growth is usually caused by malnourishment or a medical problem. You should have your pup tested for parasites like hookworm or ringworm, and consider switching them to a higher-quality, calorie-dense food. If left untreated, malnourishment can lead to weak bones, muscles, and immune system. As you might expect, growing too quickly is often caused by feeding your dog too much. American and British Goldens are similar. However, American Goldens tend to be less stocky and muscular, instead having a leaner appearance. They may weigh a bit less as well. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! After all, they were only just born in the past few months. They have much less experience with processing outside stimuli and regulating their emotions. As a result of this constant activity, you notice that your puppy is beginning to act a little strange. They are not listening, and perhaps they begin to growl and bark even when there is nothing threatening around at all. You can sense and watch the frustration coming off of them in droves. Luckily, we have tips on how you can handle them while also making them less likely to occur in the future. How could something as incredibly cute as a puppy be so upset over basically nothing? And, possibly even more importantly, what can you do to stop this from happening? After viewing your puppy seemingly flying off the handle at nothing at all, it is perfectly natural to wonder why puppies even experience temper tantrums at all. Much like how human children will feel overwhelmed, overstimulated, or just be frustrated with a situation, puppies can do the exact same thing. What Causes a Puppy Temper Tantrum? This is certainly an annoyance, but it does not mean that you and your dog cannot still go about your day exactly as planned. Some other reasons that your puppy might feel especially frustrated include that they are overly tired, they are overstimulated, or they have previously learned that tantrums get them what they want. We will discuss all of these possibilities in more depth a bit later in this article. What Are the Signs of a Puppy Tantrum? In some cases, it might be completely crystal clear to a pet parent that their puppy is currently experiencing and throwing a temper tantrum. That being said, if you have never seen one before, you might be a bit confused at first regarding what you are seeing. The remedy for this particular issue is a fairly easy one: make sure that your dog is getting enough high-quality rest. Puppies often need between 18 and 20 hours of sleep per day, so they will need to be left undisturbed for prolonged periods of time. Resist the urge to cuddle, play with them, or generally bother them as they are sleeping. They are using that time to fuel their growth, which is a constant during puppyhood. Do not worry, there will absolutely be plenty of moments of boundless puppy energy soon after they wake up on their own. If your dog is having trouble getting this amount of sleep, or cannot find an area of the house that is quiet or where they feel comfortable enough to get some rest, you have options. It might be time to look into getting your puppy a cozy crate for them to call their own. You can make this space wonderfully comfortable for them by including a memory foam mattress pad where they can rest their weary head after a long day of playing. If that was not already enough to get your dog ready for bed, try tossing in some soft blankets and their favorite toys as well. Do Not Put Them in Unnecessary Over Stimulating Situations Many of the situations in which a puppy is experiencing a temper tantrum are necessary for you and them to go about the day. To do so, you must immediately remove the puppy or yourself from the environment the moment a transgression occurs. Just a boring room for 30 seconds. Then let him out and do one of the activities mentioned above. Because his owners only called the dog when it was time to come in, that command was starting to represent the end of play time. By practicing the recall inside and calling him over then letting him go back to playing outside, his owners will quickly eliminate his resistance to the recall. Next I went to go meet Kodi. He reacted as soon as he saw me. His energy spiked and he started barking while lowering his head, baring his teeth and making some intense eye contact. I went over to his kennel and sat down with my back to it. As soon as I did this, he calmed down and stopped most of the barking, but only for as long as I remained sitting with my back to him. Each time I got up, his energy and intensity rose as well. While she is very sweet and loving, she is also very high energy and used to be excitable. His owner had adopted a harness to better control him after a failed attempt at a gentle leader. This leash collar use stops most dogs from pulling immediately. Because the leash position provides a different sensation, it pulls the dog a little off center. This usually settles a dog down and makes it more susceptible to following your lead. So you have an owner who now feels more confident as they have the dog doing what they want; walking beside them and not pulling. I am certain that this experience added an unconscious confidence to his owner and this confident energy remained with her after the walk. She reported that Kodi had kept nice boundaries around people and parts of the home. When they cooked dinner, Kodi moved away on his own and kept a respectable distance from the kitchen rather than lying at their feet per his usual. She starts out a bit whiny, then will progresses to bounding off the crate sides and howling like the hound of the baskervilles. She does the same thing in the crate in the car. Will she just get over this or is this building a fear of her crate? After his arrival and our integration period, it was time for him to go to the crate. Day 11 — gave the command and he went to the crate like a rockstar. Then day 12 arrived, gave the command for the crate and nothing. I knew I was not supposed to make it a negative experience and what was I to do? I was told that this was an easy fix and would be resolved as soon as we got off the phone. Long story short, it was an easy fix. By the time they got done telling me that going to his crate was not an option and that no matter what, when I gave the crate command — he was going in and that was that. Emboldened by this new found confidence after I got off the phone with them, I gave the command with the full knowledge that he was going in the crate…. The difference for me was, I knew it was a safe place, I knew he was going in, and therefore the confidence with which I directed him to the crate communicated to him this was not a negotiable — he went in like a rockstar, no problem. As to the whining and desire to be out with the rest of the pack, it is critical that whining does not precede getting out of the crate. The dog must be calm and quiet before exiting the crate and opening the door does not mean, run free. Opening the door means, the dog waits for the release command and then the dog exits. Getting there may be a challenge. You may have to work in short periods of time being consistent in not letting the dog out when it is whining. You have to wait for a quiet period and then praise and release the dog so there is no connection between whining and getting out of the crate. As you know the crate is a safe place, and assuming the dog is not sick or needing to relieve itself, there is no need for whining. For me, this was a mindset change. While in the crate I knew he was not sick or injured, should not need to relive himself, therefore I can ignore the whining. I did, it worked. Follow up when the dog calms — mark the desired behavior and you should see more of it and for longer periods of time until one day you forget it was ever an issue. Sable Bernedoodles will usually have a lighter brown, cream, or red coloring under and around the eyes. This is the color your sable Bernedoodle will most likely clear out to. Clearing out is different than fading. With fading we do not know what color the puppy will end up being. With clearing out the dog shows what color it will end up being around 6 weeks of age. Despite the fact that they go through a number of stages of growth and development, we tend to consider dogs either puppies or adults. So what are the stages of puppy growth and development? Depending on what methodology you want to follow, there are anywhere from 5 to 7 stages of puppyhood that start at birth and end when your dog reaches adulthood. This is called the imprinting, or critical learning period. For puppies, the imprinting period is during the first 16 weeks of life. Therefore, puppies should not be removed from their original homes before 7 weeks of age. As soon as your puppy comes home, time is of the essence for you to provide a huge heaping of high quality socialization and schooling. This is the key to creating a socially self-confident, well-behaved puppy that is strongly bonded to you. Fear-Impact Period: During the 2nd Socialization Period, when your puppy is around weeks of age, it is important to be aware of what is known as a Fear-Impact Period. So, protect your puppy from these long-term effects by avoiding bad experiences. That is good parenting! This will typically occur between months of age, but sometimes lasts longer. This is similar to the First Fear-Impact Period. If it does not occur at this time, it will occur later during the Adolescent Period. This is usually a difficult time for many puppy parents, but can be a mess for those with puppies that missed early establishment of boundaries, socialization and training. Just be patient, consistent, and supportive—make sure boundaries are still well in place, review your training, and continue building on your successes. Smaller breed puppies will usually attain maturity by around 1 year of age and large-giant puppies can take up to 2 years. Mentally and socially, a dog may be considered a puppy for up to 4 years! The Multi-Pet Household If you already have pets and are introducing a Bernedoodle into your family, the best thing you can do is ensure that everyone gets off on the right foot. This requires careful planning and, in many cases, slow introductions. Understanding Animal Communication Dogs generally communicate similarly no matter the breed, but other animals have their own methods of communication. For example, when a dog wants to play, it will generally lower its front paws and stick its butt in the air, wag its tail, and its ear might perk up depending on the type of dog. Now think about how a cat shows aggression. They put their butt in the air, they swish their tails menacingly, and their ears go back. Do you see how these are all very similar to what a dog does to show that they want to play? This is just one example of how a dog can miscommunicate with other animals — and why it is up to the owner to introduce their pooch to other animals in the household carefully. Introducing Your Current Dog to a New Bernedoodle If you already have a dog or dogs and are introducing a new Bernedoodle puppy or adult, you should do so slowly and carefully. Even if your dog loves other dogs, remember that it can be quite a different thing to have another dog come live in their home. For this reason, it is a good idea to have the initial meeting in a neutral location such as a park that your dog has never been to. Ideally, you will have a friend or family member that can help you. Each of you will take one of the dogs and go to the meeting spot alone. Try to bring the dogs together to greet each other. Do your best to keep the leash slack so that the dog does not feel it is being held back. At this point, there are many ways either dog might act. They might be excited to meet each other, which they will show by circling and sniffing. They might urinate near one another, circle each other, or even ignore the other. Let them do what they would like with as little interaction from you as possible. Keep the interaction brief. If at any point the dogs try to fight or otherwise become aggressive with each other, do not pull on their leashes. Instead, wave a treat above the nose of each to get them to separate. Let them calm down. Keep them near each other but not close enough to get at the other. Provide them with calm pets, lots of treats, and other comforting things. If all goes well, try heading out on a short walk together. If all the dogs still seem to like each other — or they seem indifferent — then you can take them home and see how they do. Keep them on leash initially so that you can quickly jump in if things get out of hand. Otherwise, allow them to explore together and get to know each other. Introducing Your Cat to Your New Bernedoodle If you are a cat household bringing in a Bernedoodle, you will have a few options depending on how dog-savvy your cat is and how cat-savvy your dog is. If neither animal is used to having the other around, you will want to start very slowly. When we brought our puppy home, we had two cats who had never met a dog. It took several months to introduce them fully. First, we ensured that the cats had somewhere to go that the puppy could not go. We did this by installing a puppy gate on our stairs that includes a cat door. This allowed our cats to go upstairs where their litter and food is, to get away from the dog. It allowed them to slowly make the trek downstairs to meet the puppy on their terms. I will admit that there was a period of time where my husband and I wondered if our cats would ever be brave enough to come downstairs or if we would have cats upstairs and a dog downstairs for the rest of our lives. Luckily, it happened just as we hoped — the cats eventually started coming downstairs, and they now love playing with our Bernedoodle. It just took a lot of time and patience. If you are getting a Bernedoodle that is used to cats, or you have cats that are used to dogs, then you do not have to go this slow. However, it is still wise to give the animals time to get used to each other before formally introducing them. Bring your Bernedoodle home and keep it confined to a room or two for the first day or two. Let your cats smell that the dog is in the house, and the dog smell the cats in the house. This gives both of them a chance to adjust to the other. Then try bringing the pup out on a leash. Allow the animals to approach each other. If they do so peacefully, you can drop the leash — but keep it on the dog at first so that you can quickly grab it if any of the animals get upset. Once your pets are used to each other, you should not assume that they will never have a kerfuffle. Just as human siblings will fight from time to time, your animals might too. The First Few Weeks of Being a Multi-Pet Household Whether you have introduced your Bernedoodle to another dog, another cat, or any other pet, the first few weeks are critical in the long-term success of a blended household. Walk them or play with them at the same time. In short, try to keep their life as similar to before as possible. Do not leave two dogs alone together until you are confident that they are entirely used to each other. Continue to give them lots of treats, praise, and attention when they communicate properly. If you notice dogs fighting over toys, growing, snapping, showing their teeth, or long stares, then it is time to separate the dog from the rest of the family until it can settle down. As time goes on, the pets should get used to being together and, hopefully, start to become the best of friends. Suppose this does not occur, and your current dog is aggressive toward your new Bernedoodle even after taking care with a slow introduction. Playdates Are the Best Way to Start Socializing with Other Dogs If you do not have another dog in the home and want to introduce your Bernedoodle to other dogs, it is wise to start with one-on-one playdates. If you have a friend or family member with a dog that loves other dogs, ask them to get together. Start at a neutral place, like a park. Keep both dogs on their leashes and allow them to sniff each other and greet each other. Unless they show signs of aggression, you should follow their lead and allow them to get to know each other however they feel comfortable. Once they seem to be comfortable with each other or indifferent to one another , take off for a short walk. The first time you introduce your Bernedoodle to another dog will likely be the most nerve-wracking because you will not know what to expect. Once you know that your dog likes other dogs, you can more quickly and easily introduce them to other dog-savvy dogs. Taking Your Bernedoodle to the Dog Park for the First Time The most important thing to know about taking your puppy or dog to the dog park for the first time is that it should not be the first time your pooch interacts with other dogs. Remember that the dog park is overwhelming to a dog. There are new smells, other dogs, new people, and new rules that your puppy or dog is not aware of. This is why we start by offering advice on socializing with other dogs and then move on to advice about the dog park. If you take your Bernedoodle to the dog park before they are ready, they can quickly become fearful of the park, and that can transfer to all their interactions with other dogs. If you have already introduced your dog to a few other dogs and they have done great, then you are ready to take your Bernedoodle to the dog park. If you have several options, start with a smaller dog park that gives your Bernedoodle a chance to explore but that you can easily keep them in your view. Before you hop in the car, consider this list of items that can make the experience a more positive one: Their leash. Yes, the dog park is leash-less, but you will need to get your dog from your house or vehicle to the park. Then take it with you into the dog park. If something goes wrong, you will want to be able to leash your Bernedoodle quickly. Depending on the particular area in which you leave, you will likely need to keep their city license, rabies tags, and any other required tags. The easiest way to do that is to keep their collar on. Bring poop bags. You will need to clean up after your dog in a dog park just as you would if you were walking your dog through your neighborhood. Bring treats. If you have to call your pooch to you, you want to be able to reward them. This is a good chance for advanced training because you can teach your dog to respond even when distractions abound. We recommend getting a treat pouch so that you will have treats quickly available when necessary. Only bring toys you are prepared to leave behind. If you bring a Frisbee, ball, or another toy for your pup to play with, you should be prepared to lose it. It might simply get lost, another dog might claim it as its own, or you could forget it. You should assume that your dog is going to get muddy and dirty at the park. Bring one or two towels to wipe down your dog, and then bring another one or two to cover your backseat during your drive home. Your Bernedoodle is going to run around, and they are going to get tired. Bring a bottle of water and a small bowl to give your Bernedoodle a quick refresh when they need it. Preparing for Bad Experiences at the Dog Park We have taken our two dogs to the dog park hundreds of times, and very rarely is there any problem at all. That said, they do happen, and it is crucial to be prepared. The goal is to prevent them from taking chase. You can offer treats, call their name, and squeak a toy you brought with you. You do not want to make negative noise — such as yelling at your dog — because this will not encourage them to come back to you. Dog fights. Well-socialized dogs can still get into fights with other dogs. It might be that one tackled the other too hard or that they were both going for the same toy. Whatever the cause, resist the urge to jump in the middle to break them up. Dog fights are dangerous, and you should avoid getting physically involved. Instead, call your dog to you. Even if they do not immediately stop and come to you, they know you are there. Then make a loud noise, such as clapping or whistling, to get the attention of both dogs. Alert others in the hopes that the owner of the other involved dog s can recall their own dog. Ideally, everyone at a dog park would be well-versed in dealing with dogs, but this is not always the case. For example, someone might run up to your dog and roughly pet them. This is not safe behavior. You do not have to aggressively confront the offending person, but you can politely tell them to please approach your dog slowly, to let your dog come to them, or to leave your dog alone. If you decide that you would prefer to buy a puppy please note that we are not prepared to recommend breeders but we would give the following advice. The kennel Club will give you a list of breeders on request. However this will not be an indication that these are reputable breeders, it will just be a list of breeders that register puppies with the KC. You should at least be able to see the mother of the puppies. Please note that the conditions in these puppy farms are horrendous with dogs kept in appalling conditions, some never seeing the light of day. Please do not encourage this trade. Parents of the puppies should be hip scored. Reputable breeders will breed with consideration not only for looks but also for good health but most importantly good temperament. When you get your puppy, remember that the German Shepherd is a working breed and will require training and socialisation.
