As they get older, the black often can fade to various shades of gray, a trait often inherited from the OES. It is also possible for some black spots to fade or "clear" to white over time and disappear entirely! Some Sheepadoodles' adult coats can vary significantly from how they look as puppies, while others keep the same puppy colors and patterns into adulthood. Some Sheepadoodles can be almost entirely black or white, depending on the traits inherited from their parents. Coat patterns can include black markings like a tuxedo, abstract spots, polka dots, patch eyes, parti faces, masks, and many unique markings. There's always a wide range of variety in each Sheepadoodle litter! It is also possible to have Sheepadoodles in shades or with cream, brown, and red touches, although this is less common. Some can have a coat similar to the straight, fluffy hair of the OES, while others can have kinkier hair like a Poodle. On average, a Sheepadoodle bred for optimum coat will have thick, wavy hair, giving them that stuffed animal cuteness that is hard to resist. Since Sheepadoodles are mostly non-shedding dogs, you will save time by not having to clean up massive amounts of dog hair around the house. The trade-off for this luxury is that the Sheepadoodle coat will require more maintenance than some other dog breeds. Sheepadoodles must be brushed at least once a week to prevent and remove any matting in their fur. To keep an optimum coat, brush times a week or even daily if your dog looks their best. We recommend combining a de-matting brush and a regular hair brush to work through their entire coat. Sheepadoodles must also be routinely groomed to keep their hair trimmed, neat, free from matting, ears clean, and nails trimmed. You can either learn to do this yourself or, as most people do, take them to the groomer. Their ears also can get built up with dirt, moisture, and earwax, so they must be regularly cleaned to prevent problems and discomfort to the doggie. If you aren't ready to spend the time and money to groom them, this might not be the right breed for you. By nature, Sheepadoodles love to play with kids and other animals. Children often love these doggies because they look like big, fluffy stuffed animals. Don't be surprised if your kids find a new best friend in these sweet pups! Because Old English Sheepdogs are bred to herd sheep, they can be a breed that can nip at children. Some Sheepadoodles can pick up this tendency. This is most common while they are still a puppy under age 2 and is a trait that can be removed through proper training and reinforcement. Parents with young children should understand this propensity so they and their children can know what the puppy is doing and respond in a way to discourage the behavior. To better understand what a "nip" is, know they aren't biting hard or being aggressive or mean. Often it is just a herding tendency, and most often would happen when a child is running away from a group. The dog will gently nip at the child's clothes or hips like a herding dog would do to encourage a sheep to return to the fold. Because Sheepadoodles have such a strong desire to please their people and receive positive affirmation, they should quickly learn that this behavior is discouraged if they do have this tendency. We also take dogs that have been brought to shelters around New England. If a shelter reaches out for help, we do our best to find placement for the boxer in need. Lastly, we have a wonderful relationship with boxer rescue in Puerto Rico, and we work closely with them to bring boxers in need, from the island, to New England. All of our boxers are temperament tested and evaluated before coming into rescue. It should be noted that ALL dogs require a decompression period when going to a new home. Can I adopt a female dog if I already have a female dog? The short answer is no. Our experience in placing dogs, has shown us that placing two females together is oftentimes not the best long term situation. We receive many calls from owners needing to surrender their female boxers because there is fighting with another female dog in the house. Either way, the fighting is often brutal and bloody. We have adopted a policy to never place two female dogs in the same house. Are your boxers healthy? They are brought up to date on vaccines, tested for heartworm, and spayed or neutered unless too young or not medically able to be. Their vet records are provided upon adoption. Do I need to have a fenced in yard to adopt a boxer? We do not require a fenced in yard for all of our boxers. We look at each dog, individually, and based on the needs of that dog, we may require fencing. At Blue Star Labradoodles, we only sell Multi-Generation Australian Labradoodle puppies because the Multi-Generation Labradoodles are allergy-friendly, non-shedding and have the most reliable temperament, coats and health. It is important when you are researching your Labradoodle puppy that you understand the difference between Multi-Generation puppies and puppies that are the result of a first or second cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle F1 or F1B. There is just not enough Poodle in the dog typically to make them non-shedding and dander free. If you have owned, or been around, a Lab, you know that they shed. However, you should see a noticeable reduction in the shedding with an F1 and they usually have a great temperament if the parents are of the same quality. They are consistently non-shedding, have a fleece hair coat, are very close to dander free and have that great Labradoodle temperament if the parents are of the same quality. These puppies are the most likely to be non-shedding and allergy friendly. However, it has been suggested that you must get to the 5th generation before you can be confident of the non-shedding and non-allergenic benefits. A multigen Labradoodle is usually at least three generations removed from their closest purebred Labrador or Poodle ancestor. When breeders talk about multigen Labradoodles, they might also use confusing terms like 1st generation Labradoodle, and F2b Labradoodle. But once you understand the simple rules of labelling doodle generations, they are a useful source of information! What Is A Multigenerational Labradoodle? Breeders usually use the term multigenerational Labradoodle or multigen Labradoodle to describe an F3 Labradoodle or beyond. Or in other words, a puppy whose closest purebred ancestor is a great grandparent or further. An F1 Labradoodle puppy can also also be described as a 1st generation Labradoodle. F2 Labradoodles have two F1 Labradoodle parents. Their closest purebred ancestors are their grandparents, and they are two generations removed from them. Therefore, an F2 Labradoodle is also sometimes called a 2nd generation Labradoodle. F1b Labradoodles have one F1 Labradoodle parent, and the other parent is either a pedigree Labrador or pedigree Poodle. More usually it is a Poodle, to increase the odds of each F1b puppy having a non-shedding coat. Back crossing can be performed on later generations too. An F3 Labradoodle is three generations removed from their closest purebred ancestor. Or in other words, their closest pedigree Labrador or Poodle relative is a great-grandparent. Which is why most breeders switch to describing litters as multigenerational instead! Well, the reason is all to do with fixing desirable genetic traits in the next litter. And for many breeders, an important example of this is coat type. Does a multigen Labrdoodle shed? Labradors have heavy shedding coats, whilst Poodle coats shed very little. F1 Labradoodles can inherit either coat type, but creating multigen litters from proven non-shedding Labradoodle lines increases the odds of puppies with non-shedding coats. Multigen Labradoodle temperament Multigen Labradoodles can also be more reliable in other respects. But using the friendliest F1 Labradoodles to create an F2 generation, and using the friendliest individuals from that generation to create an F3 generation, increases the odds of multigen Labradoodles also being exceptionally friendly. What About Multigenerational Mini Labradoodles? The first Labradoodles were a Labrador and Standard Poodle mix. They varied in size from 40 to 80 pounds. Since then, interest in Labradoodles with a Miniature Poodle parent has also increased. Miniature Poodles weigh just 10 to 15 pounds, which means the potential range of adult sizes in a litter of F1 Mini Labradoodle puppies is wide. Creating a litter of F1b Mini Labradoodle puppies with one Mini Labradoodle parent and one Mini Poodle parent increases the likelihood of small, non-shedding puppies. And producing multigenerational Mini Labradoodles after that will further decrease the likelihood of puppies over a certain size in each litter. Labradors and Poodles are both prone to some genetic health problems, and in particular hereditary orthopedic diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia. All Labradors and Poodles used for breeding should first be tested and cleared for: hip dysplasia eye disease and the faulty gene that causes exercise induced collapse. So, always ask your breeder for proof of the results of these tests. What is it about each of them that they were so keen to capture in another generation? These questions are particularly important for multigen Labradoodles because in a sense, there is no right or wrong answer. Whilst another person might be seeking an energetic dog they can go running with or train as a gundog. The breeder is likely to have picked parents who match their idea of the best Labradoodle temperament. You need to find out if your idea of perfection is the same! Types of Labradoodles There are lots of ways of categorizing Labradoodles, but a really interesting one that is relevant here is designer Labradoodles vs Australian Labradoodles. Multigen Labradoodles also fall into this category, albeit somewhere on the fringes of it. Australian Labradoodles, on the other hand, are more than just an Australian Labrador Poodle cross. Australian Labradoodle is the breed name adopted by Labradoodle enthusiasts who are trying to get the Labradoodle recognized as a new pedigree dog in its own right. To achieve this, they need to breed true. That is, each new generation of puppies should come from the previous generation of Australian Labradoodles, with no more outcrossing to purebred Labradors and Poodles. And all the puppies should match the same physical profile and behave in a reliably similar way. Multigenerational Labradoodle Summary Multigen Labradoodles are at least three generations apart from their closest pedigree Lab or Poodle relative. Rio is doing awesome, my son and him have such a special bond. One of the main factors of deciding to get a Labradoodle was because I am allergic to dogs. My allergies have been perfect around Rio, he absolutely does not shed and I suspect he has very low dander if I am not experiencing any allergic reaction around him. I love his coat, it is a balance between curly and wavy. We get so many compliments on how handsome Rio is but most of all, he is the most sweetest puppy I have ever been around. He has been very easy to train which was very important to me since he does come to the office with me and encounters different people everyday. I will say he is a big boy, probably 65 lbs already! Would this be a defect that would continue to be passed onto the puppies too? The Mom is also slightly wall eyed. I feel that it is a defect, would I be correct? Also, is it the sign of a poor breeder for that person to breed a frenchie who has an issue such as that? The breeder also is keeping the puppies in a swimming pool which I found a bit odd and it also appears they smoke in their house which I've heard is a big no-no with frenchies. I don't see the eyes as being so wall-eyed as I see a little too much white for my taste. There are so many quality French Bulldog Breeders out there. I had a difficult time finding a puppy when I was looking but since I purchased him and started following people on FB I have found so many. But, that's just me. If the default eye color for most dogs is brown, why do French Bulldogs get blue eyes? However, genetics is the number one cause of blue-eyed French Bulldogs. If a Frenchie has a long history of blue eyes, they are likely to develop blue eyes. Here are the three main reasons Frenchies are likely to get blue eyes. This gene is responsible for random pigment dilution lightening of the nose, eyes, and fur. French Bulldogs without this genetic mutation are more likely to develop brown eyes. Melanin Levels Melanin levels can influence the eye color of French Bulldogs. Generally, dogs with higher melanin levels in their iris tend to have brown eyes. Conversely, a lower concentration of melanin results in lighter eye colors in dogs. Genetically, blue eyes in dogs do not mean more health issues. It is possible to have a perfectly healthy blue-eyed Frenchie. However, it is important to note that blue-eyed Frenchies may have an increased likelihood of significant health risks compared to brown-eyed Pit Bulls. Deafness Deafness, or hearing loss, is common in French Bulldogs with blue eyes. This health issue is present in certain dog breeds that carry the Merle and Piebald genes. Congenital deafness is linked to the merle gene, while the Piebald gene is responsible for spotted or multicolored coats on dogs. So, if your French Bulldog pup has blue eyes due to the merle gene or has a spotted color coat piebald gene , he may be at a higher risk of hearing loss. Affected Frenchies are at greater risk of injury, for instance, in road traffic accidents. You can rule out congenital deafness by conducting a BAER test in Frenchie puppies as young as six weeks old. Additionally, consider acquiring a collar specifically designed for deaf dogs and ensure your dog has an identification tag to promote awareness and safety for everyone in their vicinity. Blindness French Bulldogs with blue eyes may potentially develop vision defects. The presence of blue eyes in Pit Bulls can indicate that your pet carries the Merle gene, which is a dominant gene. However, it is essential to note that not all blue-eyed French Bulldogs will inevitably become blind. The likelihood of eye defects such as blindness is higher if both parents carry the Merle gene and pass it on to their offspring. This test can help identify whether your Frenchie carries the gene s for blue eyes, other genetic disorders, or complications. Given the susceptibility of eye problems in Frenchies, supplementing their diet with eye dog supplements like Zesty Paws eye supplement and using dog eye drops to provide long-lasting corneal protection and hydration can be beneficial. Lastly, French Bulldogs are prone to thickening and hardening skin on the nose, also known as nasal hyperkeratosis. Using a dog nose butter can bring relief or prevent it. Because Frenchies are susceptible to many health issues, we advise looking into pet insurance for French Bulldogs. While brown eyes in dogs derive their color from melanin, dogs with blue eyes have colorless irises that lack any pigment. The coloration of blue eyes is achieved through a similar mechanism as the blue color of water and the sky. This occurs because all the light entering the eyes of a French Bulldog is scattered back into the atmosphere, creating the optical illusion of a blue appearance. The mutation of the ALX4 gene in dogs with blue eyes seems to decrease pigment production in the eye. The lack of pigment causes the eye to appear blue. In general, the French Bulldog resembles a Bulldog in miniature, with a stocky and muscular appearance. Frenchies look active and intelligent, with a smooth coat and medium or small body structure. Males can grow between 11 to 13 inches tall and weigh 20 to 28 pounds. Female Frenchies have about the same measurements. A large and square head, with heavy wrinkles rolled above the extremely short nose, are common physical traits among French Bulldogs. They seem alert, curious, and interested at all times. Eye Color Characteristics According to the United Kennel Club breed standard for French Bulldogs, eyes in Frenchies should be dark in color, wide apart, set low down in the skull, as far from the ears as possible, round in form, moderate size, neither sunken nor bulging. In lighter-colored dogs, lighter-colored eyes are acceptable. No haw and no white of the eye showing when looking forward. Anything outside this description, including blue eyes, is considered a serious fault and not a standard. On the other hand, solid coat colors are determined by the levels of melanin. This alteration prevents the cells from producing a full-strength black pigment, resulting in various coat color shades ranging from gray, brown, tan, and everything in between. Blue-eyed French Bulldogs with brown, black, grey, and silver coat colors are probably the most difficult and rarest of all blue-eyed Frenchies. Because the melanin levels are full-on black or closer to the black pigmentation. Also, the Merle gene is less likely to be present among these color coats. Their brown eyes are due to high levels of melanin and the possible absence of the merle gene. These colors range from dark brown to light hazel, which may look greenish. You may find Frenchies with darker blue eyes, while others may have lighter blue eye coloration. The main reason for blue eyes in Frenchies can be found in M-locus and S-locus genes. Call them weaknesses. But there are things that many a breeder might admit if only to themselves that he or she would change in their top dogs, if given the chance. They might be little details. They might be major. But whatever they are, rest assured that you, as a potential puppy buyer, will never hear them mentioned. If you are a newcomer to the breed, considering your first Frenchie purchase, do not be deterred. The vast majority of French Bulldogs are happy, healthy, and live long lives. But there is a tendency in any breed for certain problems to occur. Frenchies are not afflicted by nearly as many as some breeds! If you know what these potential problems are, you will be better equipped to choose a puppy and avoid problems later in its life. In general, French bulldogs are great companion dogs, but as with all flat-faced brachycephalic breeds, they have certain limitations. They are not marathon runners, and will not deal well with long walks. They also do not handle hot weather well. Their small lung capacity and reduced ability to cool themselves effectively by panting make overheating a major concern. Other than that, there is the other flat-face problem: they injure their eyes more easily by running into things. Genetically, there are a variety of conditions that show up in Frenchies. Some are insignificant. Others are important to understand. Let us look at some of these, and how they relate to the puppy you might be considering. Some of the offending colors occur only rarely. Others appear more frequently. Black: The biggest problem with Frenchies is the occurrence of black dogs. This also includes black and white, or white and black pied. Black is all right, as long as it contains some hint of brindling. If not, it is a disqualification from showing. Brindling is a pattern of lighter color blond, red or similar, but not white in stripes or lines running through the base color. It has been accepted that even a few lighter hairs somewhere on a dog constitutes brindling. Bear in mind that if you are purchasing a Frenchie for show, the darker the dog, and the sparser the brindling, the more likely that the offspring of that dog will be black. Predominantly black dogs are acceptable, but when it comes to breeding them, careful choices must be made so as not to double up on dark genes. Remember this: brindling is not a color, it is a pattern. Therefore, you should be able to detect at least a little on a dog that resembles a pattern in the base color. If you are buying a Frenchie for show, you might want to stay away from a black dog with just a few hairs of brindling. Unless you enjoy arguing in the ring with judges as to whether your dog has enough light hairs to be legal. Black and White: If a dog is predominantly black, but marked with white Boston marked, or with white on its chest, throat or feet , the same rule still applies. There has to be brindling. White and Black: With pied dogs, the areas of black must have some brindling within them, or it is a disqualification. Liver: It is very unlikely that you will ever see a liver-colored Frenchie. The color is probably best described as the color of a red Doberman. It would be expected that a liver-colored Frenchie would have a lighter-colored nose. Black and Tan: As rare as this color combination is in the breed, it has been seen. It comes from the terrier background. The color is predominantly black with tan highlights, as is seen on a Manchester terrier or a Rottweiler. Because of its rarity in the breed, it is not a major concern. Generally, it is understood to be a blue-grey color, such as is found on some Greyhounds. White with patches of blue-grey would be similarly disqualified. All other colors are allowable in the breed. Red, fawn, cream, white. The only real concern is a black dog without brindling. Breeders have been known to hide black dogs, or highlight them with hair color, for showing purposes. A color footnote: for showing purposes, the judges are supposed to follow the Standard. However, judges do show color preferences. These preferences tend to go through changes, according to fashion. More recently, cream Frenchies have been the big winners. If you are looking to be highly competitive in the ring, it might be good to check to see what colors are the biggest winners. Beware, though, because individual judges may have tastes that go against the mainstream. The only health concern involved in colors is the link between white or nearly all-white dogs and deafness. This linkage occurs in other breeds, as well. There is an incidence of deafness occurring in pied Frenchies with minimal markings, or in white dogs. If you are considering a pied or near-white puppy, check its hearing. As in other breeds, white or light-colored dogs may be more prone to skin problems. They may also be more susceptible to sunburn. Sometimes, in the rush to purchase a puppy, a buyer will miss something obvious. If you are buying for show, look at noses. The breed standard specifies that the nose color must be black, and that non-black noses are a disqualification…except in lighter colored dogs, where lighter noses are allowable but not preferred. Although the Breed Standard allows for lighter noses on lighter dogs, a Dudley nose is just too noticeable. This is not allowable. Question is: are you willing to take the risk? That is where the nares, the openings in the nose, are pinched and narrow. This creates a breathing problem. Narrow nares occur with some frequency in the breed. If a breathing problem is present, it will probably not be noticeable until the dog is an adult. If you are looking at a puppy, it may be hard to distinguish if the nares are wide or narrow, unless you know what you are looking at. Check the parents, if they are available. That may give you some clue. There is talk of ears being too pointed or of the wrong form to be bat ears. While not a disqualification, a bad earset is a fault. Their ears can come up as early as five weeks of age, but may take as long as fifteen weeks to come up. At the time when the puppies are ready to go to their new homes, their ears should be up. At that point, you should be able to judge the correctness of their earsets. One observation: a puppy with ears that come up late is more likely to have a lazy earset in adulthood. Size of ears is another factor that greatly affects the appearance of the dog. A puppy should look like a rabbit. If its ears are too much in proportion with its head when it is small, they will appear too small when the dog is grown. While ear size is not a disqualification, and is merely a matter of preference, larger is generally better. For showing, a dog should be small enough that it is still under 28 pounds when it is in good weight. If you have to keep a dog on a diet to keep it within the weight standard, it will look undernourished in the ring. When looking at puppies, it is hard for an outsider to guess how big they will be at adulthood. Even different bloodlines develop differently. One indication is to look at the parents. If they are large, then the tendency will be that the offspring will be large as well. Since European standards allow for larger Frenchies, anything with European bloodlines could carry a tendency to get larger. While that individual may remain smaller, there is no guarantee that it will not put on a late spurt of growth. For breeding purposes, such a small individual will still tend to produce offspring more like its larger forebears. There is no minimum weight standard. But a male French Bulldog much under 17 pounds is going to look like a runt when held up against the others in the breed ring. A small bitch can get by more easily than a small dog. Some Frenchies have more tail than others. Some have just a button, or a screw tail that lays down. But if it screws so it sticks up, or it is straight, the breeder may have it altered or reduced in size. If the judge can detect this, it is a disqualification. If an over-obvious tail is docked, an astute person can tell by feeling the tip of the tail. The last tail bone should be pointed. If it is not, then there is a likelihood that some of the tail has been removed. The eyes should also be round, not almond-shaped or squinty. As the puppy grows up, the natural eye color will develop. You want the eye color to be as dark as possible, even on a lighter colored puppy. However, if the puppy does have lighter eyes, they may darken some in the first year as the puppy matures. Still, the darker the eyes, the better. One thing not mentioned in the Breed Standard is that both eyes should be able to look at you at the same time. When Frenchie puppies first open their eyes somewhere around ten days of age , they may appear wall-eyed. By the time they are five weeks old, the eyes should be coming around. If they are still wall-eyed at eight to twelve weeks of age when many puppies are sold , then there is a likelihood they will stay that way. A scissors bite or an overbite are considered a fault. Looking at the bite in an 8-week old puppy will only give you an indication. The jaw relationship will continue to change until the head has reached its adult size. In males, the bite may continue to change up to about 2 years of age. If a puppy has an extreme underbite, the possibility of it showing teeth as an adult is increased. The bite is also supposed to be even. This is a common fault in French Bulldogs. It takes a trained eye to spot a slight tip of the jaw in a puppy. If there is a misalignment, it will only get worse as the puppy matures. Uneven teeth are also common in the breed. While not as attractive as a straight line of teeth, it is not a major fault. Judges will usually overlook a tooth out of position, as long as the jaw itself is aligned correctly. Protruding tongue is also a common problem in the breed. Flat-faced breeds have greater difficulty containing a tongue that is larger. If the tongue protrudes to one side or the other, it could indicate underlying problems with jaw alignment. If it sticks straight out, then there is just too much tongue for the mouth. Tongue can be a major drawback in a show dog, as it is visible from a great distance. If it is minor, the dog can be taught to keep it in while being shown. If it is major, there is little hope. In puppies, teething can cause the tongue to protrude due to gum swelling and discomfort. Since teething continues intermittently until the puppy is about a year old, intermittent protruding tongue might be because of this. It is difficult to differentiate between teething tongue and permanent protruding tongue. Check inside the mouth of the pup to see if teeth are missing especially in front. If they are all there, it is possible that the tongue problem will be permanent. Most permanent tongue problems are apparent from eight weeks of age. The difficulty is in figuring out what is permanent and what is transitional. NECK The neck needs to be thick and well arched, to allow the head to be carried properly. If the neck is too short, it will affect the mobility of the head. While puppies particularly males will not have the bulk and fill they will have at adulthood, you should be able to look at the general proportions of the body to tell how the neck relates to the rest. Make sure the head is carried proudly, and that there is a definite arch from the back of the ears down to the shoulders. A lot of things change with adolescence. Nonetheless, there should be a slight fall close behind the shoulders, and the rear should be somewhat higher. Correct topline should minimize problems with movement. There is much discussion about toplines, and it is advisable that you know what a good topline should look like. As with other characteristics, look at the toplines of the parents as an indication of where the offspring should go. If the back leg is very straight, it is less attractive and is more likely to produce poor movement. It may also indicate problems in the joints. When looking at Frenchie puppies, you need to know that they are a little slow to get their rear legs under them. There is a tendency for the rear legs to stick out at an angle until the thigh muscles strengthen up. So weakness back there is not a major concern, and will right itself with exercise. The biggest joint problem with Frenchie rears is luxation of the patella. That is slipping of the kneecap. In some individuals, it can move out of position, causing crippling pain. In a puppy, it is hard to detect. While the puppy is standing still, try to gently move each rear limb through its normal range of motion. If a leg pops, there is a possibility of patella problems. Look at the puppy from the rear. If the feet are rotated inward pigeon toed or outward cow hocked , that may indicate a condition that will not right itself in adulthood. Even though Frenchie puppies are somewhat slow to come up on their rear legs, they should be able to stand with the rear relatively straight in relation to the axis of the body. If rear legs cross over, or if the puppy shows any signs of limping, there is a chance of a problem existing. In the front, forepaws should reach straight forward. Their rear feet should track inside the span of the front feet. While puppy movement can be inexact, there should be some tendency to move soundly. That is where the rear comes around on the right or the left, as if it is trying to catch up with the front legs. This is common in puppies, but sometimes it does not correct itself. It is not a major fault, but it does spoil the movement of the puppy. Frenchies should be active and free-moving. Any abnormality of movement should be suspect. As loving a breed as it is, a few individuals have shamed their owners in this way. Some judges will pass over a Frenchie with a listless temperament, but that is rare. A puppy should be alert and intelligent, curious and playful. If it is not, it could be sick. It could also have neurological problems. Outside the show ring, the most important feature of a French bulldog is its personality. You want one that will be a good companion, agreeable, and affectionate. Look at the parents, if you can. Are they loving and affectionate? Are they standoffish or timid? Frenchies should come up to you and try to make friends immediately. There is a historical track record of some problems in French bulldogs. Have some tact. A breeder will take offense if you ask if they have had any occurrence of serious genetic problems. And chances are, they would not tell you anyway. Perhaps the best way to approach the issue is to talk of problems other breeders are reported to have had. Recent work with registries for certain genetic problems indicate that there will be more tracking of these in the future. At present, it is enough that you know the problems are out there. One of them that is a constant worry in Frenchies is hydrocephaly. The results are brain and nervous system damage. Most severely affected puppies die, or are put down at birth by responsible breeders. On rare occasion, a moderately affected puppy will make it through. Such a puppy will have an exaggerated domelike appearance to the head. The head may even be enlarged. Its behavior will not be normal and playful. It may have difficulty standing and walking. What may appear at first to be shyness may actually be nerve damage. Hydrocephalics have greater chance for a shortened life. Secondary problems usually take them before they are two years old. Veterinary bills can be staggering, and the results will still be early death. If you purchase a puppy that turns out to be hydrocephalic, contact the breeder immediately. There are indications that outside factors that affect the mother during pregnancy might influence the closing of the palate. Whether genetic or developmental, all the bull breeds do suffer a greater incidence of cleft palate. Most breeders put them down at birth, as it is difficult for a cleft palate puppy to feed without aspirating milk. Pneumonia often takes them quickly. There are degrees of cleft, however, and a minor one might go without being detected. Related to this problem is incomplete closure of the body cavity itself. Whatever factor influences the non-closure of the palate can also cause a more profound non-closure. Such puppies cannot survive. There is definitely a genetic cause. So there is not only the concern of whether a puppy is a potential hemophiliac, but also if it is a non-expressing carrier for the factor.
