There are cases where the stripes are so dark and thick that the Boxer looks like a solid black dog. On the other hand, brindle Boxers with extremely light stripes can look like a fawn Boxer. Brindle Boxer Markings Like with the fawn Boxer, brindle Boxers typically have a black mask with white markings. The black mask refers to the muzzle of the dog. In addition, white markings include areas of the chest, paws, ankles and face. Other instances of markings include brindle Boxers with only the black mask and no white markings. Though not as popular, they are fairly common with brindles. Both of these marking combinations, along with the brindle color, are considered standard and officially recognized. White Boxer Markings The markings on a white Boxer are much more unpredictable than with a fawn or brindle Boxer. Some white Boxers will be solid white with no markings. Others will have only brindle markings. However, the most common marking is fawn — often a darker shade than usual. As for the placement of these markings, it can also vary as well. I know you want to bring the puppy with you everywhere, play all day and show him or her off to all of your friends and family. Crate training is the best way to house train. Introduce your puppy to the crate early on by making it a positive experience. But you can have friends and family come over to meet your puppy, as well as their fully vaccinated, well behaved dogs and puppies. You can also begin the foundation of basic obedience commands. All that's necessary later on is getting consistency and working around distractions. Unless of course you want to compete in obedience or a sport that requires obedience. Competition makes things a little more complicated than that. This step is often overlooked and it's arguably the most important step for a new puppy. Puppies love a routine. It's comforting knowing what's going to happen. Wake up in the morning, outside to potty. A little training with treats, breakfast, outside to potty again. A little play time etc. If you have to go to work, make sure you have a friend, relative, dog walker or dog sitter to let the puppy outside if you can't make it home during your break to let the puppy use the potty. They have a tiny bladder and can't hold it for a full workday. When you have a routine that works, things will go smoothly. If you stray from that routine or never establish one, you'll have more accidents, a confused puppy, and quite possibly a headache. If something has recently changed a move, another dog in the family died, the schedule is different, etc. Make sure to keep your daily schedule on track as much as possible, since routines make dogs feel safe and secure. And "give your dog plenty of time to rest, and a comfortable and snuggly space to do so. Feeling well-rested and relaxed will make your dog much happier," adds Trott. You can also plan an adventurous outing. Cheer him up with a fun activity," encourages Trott. Like humans, dogs can feel down and depressed. We humans each have to deal with our share of sadness, and we know exactly what a sad expression from another person looks like. And sometimes dogs also have experiences which would make us sad. And naturally we want to alleviate those feelings. But first we need to understand what made them sad in the first place. We rely heavily on facial expressions to recognize sadness in other humans. Unhappy people have downcast faces, they frown, and they might cry. Sometimes dogs have faces which look sad too. Does this mean they feel sad on the inside as well? Not necessarily! Some dogs just look sad Some dogs have faces which just look sad, no matter how they actually feel. This seems especially true of dogs with very wrinkly faces, such as Pugs and Bulldogs. Perhaps their wrinkles remind us of a human frown. And some dogs might be having you on! Domestic dogs have two small muscles which work to raise their inner eyebrows: the levator anguli oculi medialis muscle and the retractor anguli oculi lateralis muscle try saying those names five times quickly! It is highly unlikely this happened by coincidence. A sad dog may: be disinterested and unresponsive to things going on around them let their tail hang limply between their legs keep their gaze lowered and not look for eye contact make slow, subdued movements lose interest in toy or games shed more than usual and sleep more. Why Is My Dog Sad? The things which can make our dogs unhappy include: Illness Lots of the signs of an unhappy dog can be symptoms of a physical illness too. For example, a dog suffering severe joint pain from hip dysplasia or arthritis might go off their food and lose interest in exercise. And of course, any sort of illness can make them sad about feeling unwell. So if your dog is out of sorts, arrange a consultation with your vet to rule out underlying medical causes. Grief Dogs are a social species. Even their wild ancestors relied on strength in numbers for survival, and domestic dogs are capable of forming close emotional bonds with humans as well as other dogs. When dogs lose a person or pet they were closely bonded to, they go through a process like grief, which can include elements of sadness, depression, increased anxiety and stress. Loneliness Your dog can also feel sad if they suddenly have to start spending more time alone. For example if you get a new job, your shifts change, or if a kid who always used to play with them gets old enough to move out. Moving house Dogs are happiest and most confident when they know exactly what to expect from their environment and their routine. Moving house can be very unsettling for dogs. And finding themselves immersed in an unfamiliar territory can make them lose their spark for a bit. Arrival of a new pet or family member Babies, puppies and kittens all throw previously well-established routines out of the window. Even a new partner or housemate moving in can change the dynamic between a dog and their family. These changes in routine, or the amount of attention they get, can make a dog feel frustrated, or just sad. But all dogs are different, and some react with sadness. Lack of purpose So many of our modern dog breeds, including Labradors, were originally bred to work. They used to spend long days working in close cooperation with a human handler to perform a job. And each new generation was bred from the individuals who were best at doing that job. But their working ability is still hardwired into their DNA. And a lack of purpose can leave them feeling lost, and well, a little bit sad. Can Dogs Sense Sadness? There is lots of evidence that dogs mimic the body language of other dogs , which is regarded as the first building blocks of empathy. And there have been studies in the past where participating dogs were recorded sniffing, nuzzling and licking a stranger who was pretending to cry. The researchers attributed this combination of hormonal and behavioral responses to rudimentary cross-species empathy. All of which supports the idea that dogs can not only sense when we are sad, but they share in our sadness with us. Including the subtle nuances, like whether it passes quite quickly or stays with us for a long time. Here are 8 ways to restore them back to their happy selves: 1. Unless their vet says otherwise, dogs need an opportunity for exercise every day. Walking the same route every time can sap our enthusiasm for doing this, so keep a list of places you can go and refer back to it if you get stuck in a rut. In this case, look into dog strollers, or drive them somewhere and let them take in the view with the windows down when you get there. Get creative with toys Toys and games can check the physical stimulation box and mental stimulation box all in one go. Get Training Training and training games are a great way to mimic the working relationship Labradors are hardwired to want with us. They create a sense of purpose which dogs find very satisfying. A happy working dog feels like their job is one long rewarding game anyway! And a game of fetch or hide and seek can be enough to deliver the same mood-boosting benefits. Increase social contact Just like us, being lonely can make dogs unhappy. Establish a routine Dogs thrive when they know what to expect next. And confident dogs are happy dogs. Try to get them happy and excited about a game or walk first, and then capture the moment with lots of praise and attention. The idea is that by encouraging a habit of embracing the good things in life, it will come more and more naturally to them. Mistreated Depression in Labradors There are several things that can cause a temporary or clinical, long-term depression in Labradors. If an owner or pet-friend dies, Labs will often become obviously sad. Their behavior changes and can be very worrisome to their owner. If you know that your dog has lost a pal, then you can sometimes just give him a couple weeks. I am no expert, but there seems to be a legit mourning period for dogs just like there is for people. Sometimes only time can fix those types of hurts. On the other hand, if you cannot figure out why your dog is moping around and refusing to eat, then you should get him to the vet as soon as possible. Bored Labradors were bred to be very active dogs. They need a serious amount of exercise. This is a ticket for one on a long guilty trip. Get your dog outside and go have some fun. One trip outside with a really good, long round of fetch, and your Lab will be back to his happy old self. You should consider 45 to 60 minutes of hard exercise an absolute must for full-grown Labs. Illness Apparent sadness can be an indicator that your dog does not feel well. An upset stomach or sore legs can slow a Labrador down and put a damper on their typical upbeat attitude. If you think your dog might be sick or sore, give her a gentle rub down. If you find a gentle spot, then you may have found the root cause as to why your Lab is sad. Bad Diet Just like trying to put gasoline in a diesel engine; a bad diet will slow down a Labrador. Remember, Labradors are bred for high octane energy. But if you are giving your dog lousy fuel, she will not be able to go at her typical high speed. She will lack the energy to do what she really wants to do—run and chase and run some more. Mistreated This is the worst kind of dog sadness—neglect and abuse. Dogs that have been neglected for long periods of time will develop a mistrust of people. When it comes to Labrador Retrievers, they are typically a very trusting dog. In fact, I believe that in order to be truly happy, Labs need strong relationships with the people in their lives. If they are robbed of those bonds, it will cause these typically friendly, happy dogs to become depressed and sad. It is not uncommon to find rescue Labs with this forlorn, sad look on their face. Their eyes can seem unusually shallow or hollow. The great news is that it usually only takes an extended experience with a loving family to restore the life to their eyes and their behavior.
