A 2nd box can be connected to the 1st whelping box. This will allow the pups to have room to romp around and play. This will also give the Boxer mom time to rest without her puppies jumping all over her. Allowing the puppies to play with each other in a safe and comfortable box is a necessary part of the first socialization they need. Week 4 When does a Boxer puppy begin eating solid food? The weaning process begins just about now, in Week 4. You may also wish to offer the very health option of homemade meals of only fresh ingredients. Start with small amounts. It will be a slow yet steady process for a puppy's digestive system to become used to solid food. Extra heating can be removed. Bruno was exhausted from his three-hour car ride home and all of the attention he was receiving. Amazingly enough, he slept until a. I jumped out of bed and ran down to take him out to pee. It was then time for breakfast, another trip outside and playtime. I was up for the day because when he woke up, he needed to be taken right outside to pee and poop. Then he was hungry. After he ate he needed to be taken immediately outside once again to go to the bathroom. After a puppy eats, it stimulates them and the vast majority of time, they need to eliminate, it's a rule of thumb with a puppy. Then he wanted to play. After all, he just woke up! No time like the present to get hyper and want to play. He had three accidents in the last two days, which is very good for a brand new puppy. If Bruno is out of his crate, he needs to be watched constantly. I don't mean watched from across the room, I mean watched as in "hovering over him watched" to ensure he does not pee, poop or chew anything he is not supposed to inside the house. During the day we try not to crate him. He's either being held, hovered over or outside. We are lucky enough to have a very large fenced yard for him. If we did not, he'd have to be walked on a leash to go to the bathroom, which would be much more time-consuming. We have to teach Bruno not to bite our hands and feet. Yes, it is cute now and kind of funny, but when he is pounds it will not be so cute anymore. Rule of thumb with a puppy: if you do not want him doing it when he is full grown, do not allow him to do it when he is a puppy. This includes sitting with him on the furniture. Another thing we must break him from is chasing our cats. Again, it's cute and funny now, but this tiny little Boxer puppy will not be tiny for long and our cats would not appreciate an adult dog chasing them around. Cats are smart, if we allow this to go on they may even decide to take up residence elsewhere. Allie the Boxer meets her new brother. Adult dogs usually do not attack puppies and Allie rather liked the little guy. She did have to put him in his place a few times, which is normal dog behavior. An adult dog will often growl at a puppy to let it know its behavior is not acceptable. For example, when Bruno wanted to play and Allie did not, she let out a small growl and stomped at the pup to tell him enough was enough. Bruno took the hint and backed off his play and started chewing on Allie's collar and dog tags instead. Allie didn't seem to mind getting her tags chewed. She realizes Bruno is just a baby. I am lucky enough to be home with the puppy. If I had to leave for work things would be much more complicated. Bruno is young and he can only hold his pee and poop for a certain amount of time. The point of crate training a dog is you put the dog in a small enough crate so there is only room to comfortably sleep. Dogs do not like to eliminate where they sleep. However, if you leave a young puppy in a crate for too long, they cannot physically hold it in and they must go, even on their bedding. If you allow this to happen, you are going backwards in your housebreaking. If you are going to be gone for many hours a day, longer than the puppy can physically hold it, it is better to pen the dog in an area such as the kitchen where the floors are easy to clean up and place some pee pads down. It is not fair to crate a puppy or dog longer then they can comfortably hold in their waste. It is much harder to housebreak a dog if you are not home. This can really give the puppy a bad start in life and will be no fault of its own when they do not understand the concept of housebreaking. Keep in mind, you cannot yell at a dog for something after the fact, you must catch it in the act. If you do not catch it in the act, your yelling is pointless and confusing to the dog. I am writing this at a. However, he will be up bright and early wanting to eliminate, eat and play.It's now a. Bruno had to go to the bathroom. I walked him outside to the spot where I prefer him to do his business. He peed and I decided to give him some time to see if he had to poop as well; he is still outside and I must go and check on my adorable bundle of a puppy.Bruno is back in his crate. Bruno is yipping. I instinctively go and see him. Goodnight, Bruno, you have a lot to learn my young puppy. Sshhhh, lets only hope he does not keep me up all night because I will have to put up with his yipping in order to teach him what nighttime means. As I type this he is yipping from his crate. I am off to shower and go to bed. I decide to let Bruno get a drink and put him outside with Allie one last time before I go to bed to ensure he does not have to go when I ignore his plea to come out of his crate. When I turned off the shower water I could hear Bruno yipping up a storm. It woke my 9 year old who was almost sleepwalking when she opened his crate to put him outside to pee. I did her the favor of taking the pup out and told her to go back to bed. I put Bruno outside. He stayed out for a few minutes then wanted back in. It is only his third night away from his littermates and he's a tiny pup. After getting the usual puppy kisses all over my neck yeah, nice after my shower, huh? I will give him a few minutes to get good and sleepy then place him back in his crate and hope for the best. Even with all of this work, I look at him like I did my newborn babies; I just love this little puppy! The next morning: 7 weeks and 3 days old a. Bruno's up, hungry and ready to play! Bruno is tired and ready to go back to sleep. But first, his head smells like pee; he must have rolled in it. Time to clean him up and then put him back to sleep. He's taken outside to go to the bathroom and to play. He is now awake for the day but will take numerous naps as puppies need a lot of sleep. We will try not to allow his naps to last for hours on end, as those long sleep periods should be adjusted to the middle of the night hours. This size crate is the perfect size for this puppy. There needs to be room to sleep, stretch out and stand, but not enough room for him to pee in one section and still have a dry place to sleep. It's Bruno's fourth day with us and he has already picked up on the concept that his crate is the place to sleep without being disturbed. We are not being extra quiet as it is the middle of the day and he must get used to noises. Also most of his quiet sleep should be adjusted for the middle of the night. He'll soon wake to eat his lunch, go to the bathroom and play. He'll be awake for a few hours and then need another nap. This crate may be perfect for now, but very soon he'll outgrow it and we'll have to get him a larger one. I let Bruno sleep for two hours and decided it was time to wake him. As soon as he turns his hours around and is sleeping through the night I will no longer worry about the length of his daytime naps. I know he can sleep through the night; he did it the first two nights, but not the third. Bruno's 4th night: 7weeks and 4days old Bruno woke up at a. I came downstairs and put him outside. He peed and pooped. I carried him back to his crate and closed it. He laid down, then a few minutes later he started crying again. I walked back to the kitchen and was about to tell him to be quiet and give him a bone to chew when some motherly instinct inside me opened the crate door. Bruno walked out of his crate and over to my feet then sat down, leaning on my leg. I picked up the little fellow, he put his head on my shoulder and started to go back to sleep. If congenital heart disease is suspected, your vet will almost certainly want you to see a specialist for further assessment. Puppy strangles is especially problematic in Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, Brittany spaniels, springer spaniels, and dachshunds. Signs Puppy strangles is a result of an immune malfunction. The skin, especially on the face, becomes infected with deep sores. These sores can become so involved that they reach the lymph nodes of the neck. This neck area swells with hard knots under the jaw until it looks like the baby dog will strangle—hence the name. Puppy pyoderma is characterized by pustules on the face, and painful swelling of the lips, eyelids, and face. This may also include swellings in the groin area, where the lymph glands are located. Infected neck lymph nodes often become abscessed, break open and drain. Signs of puppy strangles go beyond the facial sores. Puppies develop a fever, become lethargic, and stop eating, which can lead to low blood sugar that complicates the condition. The draining sores on the face must be diagnosed as pyoderma, as opposed to juvenile demodectic mange that looks similar. Treatment for puppy strangles such as steroids to relieve the inflammation could actually make the demodectic mange worse. Once your veterinarian has diagnosed the condition, ask for tips on how to help your puppy heal. Some home treatment can relieve the discomfort, too. Home Care Apply hot packs to the sore face two or three times a day. Moist heat brings blood circulation to the area to help heal the wound more quickly and clean out the infection. Apply moist heat five minutes on, five minutes off, until the cloth has cooled, and then reapply. Soak with warm water at least once a day to soften the crusties, and then gently wipe them off. Follow up by washing the area with a 2. For the lymph nodes that have abscessed, clean the spots three to four times a day with warm water on a cloth applied for five to 10 minutes at a time. As with any abscess, these spots will be very tender, so be gentle. Rough cleaning also could increase the chance that the area will scar. Veterinary Treatment Your vet may need to lance abscesses that have not opened on their own. Flushing out the deep wound can be accomplished using a syringe without the needle or even a turkey baster or squirt gun filled with an antiseptic solution like diluted Betadine. Typically, several weeks of antibiotics from your vet will be needed to resolve any deep infection and prevent secondary bacterial infections in the draining wounds. What is a heart murmur? A heart murmur occurs when there is turbulent blood flow within the heart. Some murmurs, especially those found in young puppies, can be 'innocent' or 'physiologic' and will have no negative effects on your dog's health. Young puppies with innocent heart murmurs will usually outgrow them by about 5 months. Unfortunately, a heart murmur in an older dog is less likely to be deemed 'innocent' and can typically be categorized in two ways: pathologic caused by heart disease or extracardiac not caused by heart disease. What are heart murmur grades in dogs? Not all heart murmurs sound the same. When your vet listens to your dog's heart, they will assess the intensity, timing, and location of the murmur and grade it using the following scale: Grade 1: Barely audible - the least serious type of heart murmur Grade 2: Soft murmur, but easily heard with a stethoscope Grade 3: Intermediate loudness, most serious problems will result in at least a grade 3 heart murmur in dogs Grade 4: Loud murmur that can be heard on either side of the chest Grade 5: Very loud murmur Grade 6: Very loud murmur that can be felt by placing a hand on the dog's chest wall - the most severe type of heart murmur What are the symptoms of heart murmurs in dogs? The symptoms of a heart murmur largely depend on the underlying heart condition that is affecting your pup. There is a wide range of conditions and diseases that can cause a heart murmur in dogs. Most commonly, heart murmurs in small dogs are caused by a leaky mitral valve the heart valve in between the left atrium and left ventricle. The mitral valve allows blood to flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle but does not allow for blood to flow back into the left atrium. Sometimes as a dog ages the valve degenerates which causes blood to leak backward. This condition is known as chronic valve disease, degenerative mitral valve disease, or endocardiosis. In larger breed dogs, heart murmurs are often caused by a disease called dilated cardiomyopathy with a subsequent leaky mitral valve. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease that causes the muscles in the pumping chamber of the heart to become weakened and decrease the contraction strength of the heart. While these are common culprits of heart murmurs, there is a range of other issues that can cause a murmur to occur. Your vet will be able to run the proper diagnostic tests to properly assess your pet's heart and determine the cause of the heart murmur. How can heart murmurs be treated? An innocent murmur will not require any treatment, but your vet will want you to come for follow-up appointments to ensure the heart murmur resolves itself. A heart murmur caused by cardiac disease or defect may require medication, a specialized diet, or surgery. At the very minimum, your dog will require vet visits every 6 months to monitor the murmur. What is the prognosis of a heart murmur? The prognosis of a heart murmur largely depends on the underlying cause of the murmur and ranges from good to severe. For innocent murmurs that don't require treatment, the prognosis is generally good to excellent. Heart murmurs caused by extracardiac disease or a functional problem that can be treated may resolve over time. For dogs that have a leaky mitral valve, long-term medication can help prolong their lives or improve their quality of life. The prognosis for a dog with dilated cardiomyopathy varies - if the dog is already showing signs of heart failure the prognosis is unfortunately not good. For dogs with congenital heart defects, the prognosis varies- if the defect can be corrected by surgery the prognosis is usually very good. What causes a heart murmur in dogs? Anything that changes the blood flow through the heart creating turbulence can cause a murmur to be heard. Not always. Murmurs are graded on a scale that refers to their loudness see below. Quiet murmurs may still represent severe heart disease in a patient, while conversely, loud murmurs may not impact a dog lifelong, depending on the diagnosis. This is why further investigation into the cause of the murmur with a veterinary cardiologist is useful to guide treatment recommendations and provide prognostic information. Grade 1: heard inconsistently in a quiet room with a quiet animal Grade 2: easily heard but quieter than the normal heart sounds Grade 3: same intensity as the heart sounds Grade 4: louder than the heart sounds and heard on both sides of the chest Grade 5: loud with a thrill vibration that can be felt with the hand against the chest Grade 6: very loud with a thrill and can be heard with the stethoscope off the body wall My dog is acting normally. Does that mean the heart murmur is harmless? Again, not necessarily. Dogs may be asymptomatic for their heart murmur but have significant heart disease already present that warrants treatment. Since acquired heart disease usually presents in older patients, owners often think they are slowing down due to age when heart disease is truly contributing to their change in energy. In other cases, asymptomatic dogs with heart murmurs may not require heart medications, but they may have the early stages of heart disease present that warrant other precautions. For instance, general anesthesia for a surgery or dental procedure is only recommended if a dog diagnosed with a heart murmur has been evaluated by a veterinary cardiologist and deemed to be a safe anesthetic candidate with appropriate protocol precautions in place. What are signs of cardiac heart disease in dogs? Signs of cardiac disease in dogs can include: Difficulty or labored breathing. My pet was diagnosed with a heart murmur! What does that mean? It is caused by abnormal turbulent blood flow. Abnormal turbulent blood flow can occur when blood passes across abnormal heart valves or across abnormal structures within the heart. It can also occur when blood flows very fast across normal structures such as when an animal is excited. An echocardiogram ultrasound of the heart is a non-invasive test that is performed to determine the cause of the murmur. In some instances, the louder the murmur, the more significant the abnormality within the heart. They are soft and usually go away by 14 weeks of age. This may indicate that congenital present at birth heart disease is present. The cardiologist will perform an echocardiogram as well as other tests EKG, blood pressure, etc. Depending on the disease present, some congenital diseases can be fixed or made better with an interventional catheter procedure, traditional surgery, or administration of cardiac medications. If you have an older, small breed dog: Heart murmurs in these dogs may indicate that these dogs have a leaky mitral valve the heart valve in between the left atrium and left ventricle. This valve degenerates as dogs age and when it does, the older valve allows blood to leak backwards. We refer to this disease as chronic valve disease, endocardiosis or degenerative mitral valve disease. Mild chronic valve disease that leads to small leaks across the mitral valve usually does not create a problem for a dog. The disease is slowly progressive in most cases and the leak will continue to worsen over months to years. If the disease becomes severe, the dog is at risk for developing congestive heart failure. Congestive heart failure means that the leak across the heart valve overwhelms the heart and fluid goes from the heart backwards into the lungs instead of from the heart forward to the body. A cardiologist can perform an echocardiogram and determine the stage of chronic valve disease present. The presence or absence of congestive heart failure is diagnosed by X-ray of the chest. If congestive heart failure is present, oral medications can be prescribed to help maintain a good quality of life. Some dogs can do well with these medications for years. Bernard, Newfoundland, Cocker Spaniel, Dalmatian or Portuguese Water Dog : Heart murmurs in these dogs may indicate that they have a disease called dilated cardiomyopathy with a subsequent leaky mitral valve. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease of the pumping chamber ventricle of the heart where the muscle becomes weakened and the contraction of the heart is decreased. When the ventricle is unable to pump blood to the body, fluid goes from the heart backwards into the lungs instead of from the heart forward to the body. This is known as congestive heart failure. In addition, because the heart is not pumping effectively, these dogs can develop profound weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance and fainting. Unfortunately, they can also pass away suddenly from abnormal heart beats arrhythmias from the diseased heart chambers. A cardiologist can perform an echocardiogram and determine if dilated cardiomyopathy is present in susceptible breeds. Oral medications can be initiated in the preclinical asymptomatic phase of dilated cardiomyopathy and in some cases, these medications can delay the progression of the disease to the development of congestive heart failure. If a dog develops clinical symptoms of congestive heart failure, X-rays are used to confirm the presence and determine the severity of the congestive heart failure. Some dogs can do well with these medications for a period of months to years. If you have a middle-aged to older cat especially a Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, Ragdoll, British Shorthair, American Shorthair, Sphynx or Devon Rex : Heart murmurs in cats can be due to the excitement of the veterinary visit physiologic heart murmurs or due to underlying heart disease. An echocardiogram is necessary to differentiate between a heart murmur that is just due to excitement versus a heart murmur from underlying heart disease. Heart murmurs or other abnormalities heard with a stethoscope may indicate that cats have a disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is the most common acquired heart disease seen in cats. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a disease of the pumping chamber of the heart where the muscle does not relax well after it contracts. Blood is then unable to fill the heart normally and fluid goes from the heart backwards into the lungs instead of from the heart forward to the body. Signs of congestive heart failure include a fast breathing rate, difficulty breathing, fainting, weakness, lethargy, hiding and a decreased appetite. Unfortunately, in addition, these cats can also pass away suddenly from abnormal heart beats from the diseased heart chambers. A cardiologist can perform an echocardiogram and determine if hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or other structural heart disease is present in susceptible breeds and in cats that have abnormal heart sounds on physical examination. The progression of disease is different in every cat. Some cats develop congestive heart failure soon after their disease is diagnosed by echocardiogram. Other cats remain asymptomatic for their hypertrophic cardiomyopathy for many years before they develop congestive heart failure. Still others never develop congestive heart failure or any symptoms of their heart disease. Recheck cardiology visits and echocardiograms are necessary to determine the progression of disease in each patient. If a cat develops clinical symptoms of congestive heart failure, X-rays are used to confirm the presence and determine the severity of the congestive heart failure. If congestive heart failure is present, oral medications can be prescribed to help maintain a good quality of life, and some cats can do well with these medications for a period of months to years. Jordan Vitt, a veterinary cardiologist at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, says the three types of congenital heart defects seen most often are patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonic stenosis, and subaortic stenosis. Saki Kadotani, who is completing a residency in veterinary cardiology. Vitt explains. However, each of these heart problems has its own cause and treatment. Patent Ductus Arteriosus Patent ductus arteriosus PDA is a condition in which a blood vessel that should close at birth fails to close. This problem can occur in any breed of dog. When puppies are born, this ductus should close and all blood flow through the ductus should stop. Vitt, when this happens, blood that should flow to the body goes back into the lungs through the PDA. This can result in heart enlargement, leading to congestive heart failure if the problem is not detected and addressed. To prevent this abnormal blood flow, the PDA should be closed. This can be performed by a surgeon by tying off the PDA through a surgical incision in the chest or minimally invasively by a cardiologist, like Dr. The minimally invasive technique is performed by placing a heart catheter through the femoral artery to place a device that will occlude, or close, the ductus. This narrowing of normal passages makes it harder for the blood to move from the heart to the lungs or from the heart to the body. Stenoses may affect the pulmonic valve or the aortic valve. Vitt says. This procedure involves using a heart catheter to place a balloon at the stenotic valve. The balloon is then inflated to widen the valve opening and improve the flow of blood. The balloon is removed after the procedure. A newer technique for repairing subaortic stenosis begins with threading a smaller balloon, which when inflated exposes small surgical blades, to incise or cut the scar tissue before using a larger balloon to open up the narrowed valve region. All of these minimally invasive techniques are performed by the cardiology service at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Early Detection Because congenital heart defects are something puppies are born with, there is no way to prevent this disease. However, early detection and treatment improve the prognosis for the patient. Most puppies have soft murmurs at a young age, and most murmurs go away on their own by the time the puppy is four to six months old. A murmur that is characterized as a grade 2 or less is very likely to resolve; on the other hand, Dr. Vitt advises that a heart murmur at grade 3 or higher should be evaluated by a veterinary cardiologist as soon as possible. Any murmur that is still present at six months or that is getting worse should also be evaluated. The earlier the detection, the sooner the problem can be evaluated and potentially fixed for the best long-term outcome. If a problem is detected in any of the puppies, the owner may opt to have an echocardiogram or ultrasound of the heart as well. In addition, the cardiology service will soon offer breed-specific screening days. On these days, dog breeds predisposed to certain heart diseases will be evaluated at a discounted price to encourage early detection and potential treatment. A great dog is born with good characteristics but is taught by his family to be a functioning canine member of human society. Trips to the dog park are not a substitute for a good class that includes recess. Even if you are an expert dog trainer she will benefit from a good school. As with children school is not just about the information they learn but it is the entire structure and social activity of the class. It is always rewarding to take a puppy to dog class who with a little homework will be the A student. Your Labradoodle Puppy will learn very quickly. If doggie hates to be groomed take him to the groomer for just a few minutes and a brush up. If he wants to stay home carry him off to a busy place, distract him with cookies, keep the experience short but do it as often as possible. His crate can end up being a very safe and lovely place to be. Introduce it perhaps in the car when you are going to a place she loves. Give her a chewy in the crate. If doggie is stressed in the car take her for many short rides with a fun destination. We can create neurotic pets fairly easily and then we have to live with that for the next 10 to 15 years. Some puppies get car sick. This does not mean puppy will always throw up on the way to the dog park. We have had families give puppy a tablespoon or two of pumpkin before the journey and that has worked quite well. Just be persistent because you are making patterns that will last a long time. Puppy goes to the bathroom frequently — probably more frequently than you believe. Puppy goes to the bathroom when she wakes up…. When puppy sleeps put her in her own crate. We will have started her crate training here. You then can wake her up when you think it is time. Or she will scratch or call you when she is awake. At first carry her outside to the spot you wish her to go. Praise her and give her a great treat when she has gone in the right spot. Imagine the concept — Peeing for Cookies! She will soon see That this is a better deal than peeing under the dining room table. When puppy is playing in the house I set my oven timer because I easily forget that almost every hour puppy has to go to the bathroom. This of course changes rapidly. Smaller dogs have smaller bladders and go frequently. Bigger dogs seem to hold the pee longer. If your puppy objects to her crate during the day for naps give her lovely chew toys that are only in the crate. Make her crate a lovely and special place. It is true that some leave puppy in the crate for three hours or so during the day while they work or are out on errands. This is not puppies favourite thing if it becomes too much. If you must leave puppy for great lengths of time like this perhaps a pen with a potty box, bed and toys is a better plan. Labradoodles are social creatures and for this reason we no longer place puppies in families where they must be left every day while people go out to work. The Woodwork? The Fluevog Shoes? Your puppy will chew. Many families ask me if as a breed they chew. Some puppies do chew more than other puppies but when those teeth are growing in or they are bored puppies will chew. Buy puppy many, many chew toys. Fill the house with appropriate toys for dogs so there are more yes toys than no toys. We have had puppies who have been at a stage where our kitchen woodwork and chair rungs were still the chew toy of choice. I put a few spoons of olive oil in a cup and added an extremely generous dose of cayenne pepper. I gave my wooden woodwork and furniture a bit of a polish. However a few treatments with the cayenne polish and the chew toys won the day. Puppies should not have unsupervised run of the house. It is too much for them to handle. The minute they get bored they will chew on your great stuff. One puppy I know chewed up all of the vintage cushions one long summer afternoon. Training To Be Alone Your puppy will need to learn to spend time home alone. This is part of his education. He either had us or several doggie friends to keep him company. He howled when she took out the garbage and honked the horn if she left him in the car. He missed out on a really wonderful life as only puppy who could go to work and be a therapy dog in a long term care hospital, a job he loved. Back he came to us and is living out his days as one of the group. Give him a confined space such as a pen in the kitchen. Give him some lovely and interesting chew toys and let him amuse himself for a while without you hovering over him. Gradually learning how to be alone either for an hour in his crate or a couple of hours in a pen with a bathroom facility is essential. The worst thing for both you and puppy is anxiety separation. People People People Puppy rhythm band - the great game with noise and people Although sometimes I would love a day with nobody it is important for our puppies that they meet new people every day. We begin the process and it is important that each puppy family continue. A fearful dog ends up snapping, biting and many end up in the pound. We all have met the dogs who are relegated to the basement when the company comes because the owner has no idea how the dog will behave. This is no way for anybody to live. Dogs are instinctively social creatures. He needs to meet people, children and dogs of all sizes. His first encounters should be supervised. A Doberman lunging at him or a little boy poking him with a stick is not good socialization. However keeping a small dog with only small dogs is not a good idea either. We had Yorkies who had Napoleon complexes and thought they ruled the world because we had been afraid to allow them to get used to big dogs in a calm setting. That being said, over the years we have had several serious injuries as the result of puppies big and small having times of unsupervised play. Little bones break easily. Bite Inhibition Is Important If a doggie bites - even sometimes when he may have a reason - it could be a death sentence. Puppies like babies experience the world through their mouths. Puppies chase and nip and mouth your hand. We have noticed some litters mouth more than others but all of the puppies do it. It is an essential part of their growth and development. Some puppies stop immediately. Punishing is never the answer. Nipping and biting is a behaviour essential to his development. Learning that nipping and biting a human is not a great way to play is the next step and a step that only you can teach. When he hurts you the game ends. In a minute have him come and sit in front of you and then resume your game. This is a distressing behaviour and it is important your dog give up dead bird carcasses, chicken bones and other potentially dangerous goods. As soon as puppy develops a love of her many chew toys begin the trade up game. She gives me the bully stick, I give her the liver, she eats the liver and I give back the bully stick. Everybody is happy. If you practice this when there is no real reason for her to give up anything she will give up the dangerous chicken bone that is halfway down her throat without a struggle. However, if you scold her she will think twice about ever coming back to you. As soon as puppy comes home put some ordinary puppy kibble on the kitchen counter and in your pockets. Whenever you think of it and please think of it often call puppy by name and have him sit in front of you by placing the kibble so he has to sit in order to get it. Praise him a lot and pat him at the collar. Give him the treat and tell him to go and play again. Touch his collar because then when it becomes necessary to grab a dog by his collar he is not upset. If this is something you do every day as many times as possible your dog will love to come to you. Give him something wonderful like a fancy treat or a bit of chicken. Gradually he will come without a treat. However, the idea is that he will never know when there is something wonderful waiting for him. When she is being naughty and not coming because there is a deer running up to the fence or some other irresistible thing find a wonderful treat. When the naughty dog finally comes back she will have a reward so amazing that the next time she will make a bee line just for you. Many people have said their dog is not food motivated. This is a learned behaviour. We begin to teach them to be food motivated and their family continues the pattern. A private trainer is lovely but no substitute for a class where puppy must fit in with a group of other puppies and people. Ian Dunbar.
