On a property in Candler County, Georgia, more than German shepherds were locked up in filthy, muddy pens so they could be bred and have their puppies sold for profit. Atlanta Humane Society Once local residents became aware of this puppy mill , which was illegally run by a woman named Belinda Powell, they started contacting authorities and urging them to shut her operation down. Powell ran an additional puppy mill on a property in Montgomery County, Georgia, which also had more than German shepherds. Atlanta Humane Society Help finally arrived for the dogs in early January. Powell was arrested, and local authorities, working with multiple rescue groups, started to take the dogs off the property. Jessica Rock, director of legal advocacy and law enforcement support at the Atlanta Humane Society , was part of the team who went to the Candler County property. Atlanta Humane Society Rock and a whole team of rescuers from various organizations worked tirelessly to remove each and every dog from the property, get them medical help and put them into shelters or foster homes. Victoria's story gets a little more heartbreaking -- a littermate bit her in the left eye when she was just a puppy and never received medical care -- she has since been blind in that eye. But a happy ending is in sight! As Victoria was being picked up by Finding Shelter's president, Grace Kelly Herbert, she found that the dog wouldn't allow volunteers to touch her. Frightened and growling, Victoria was taken directly to the vet where she was treated for fleas and given vaccines. Since there is no cure for Victoria's degenerative myelopathy which affects her hind legs, she is considered a hospice case and was only given another six months to a year to live. In the video below shared by the rescue staff, Victoria can be seen playing with a chew toy in the couple's yard for the very first time. Once our girl is pregnant she is immediatly brought into our home where she has her own room where she will sleep and grow to be comfortable with, and when her nesting urge takes over this is where the birthing of her precious pups will take place. Then together we raise the pups for the next eight weeks. They are played with and introduced to adults and children. They are constantly groomed and attended to so they become very socialized even being introduced to other dogs and cats. We raise these wonderful companion dogs for personality and compatability with their human counterparts. As a result they become very loving and very attached to their humans. This is more of a labor of love for us rather than a business. We spend loads of time with our dogs, caring for them and playing with them to insure they are properly socialized.
