Like many large breeds, a German Shepherd dog is not considered fully grown until they are about 18 months old. Female German Shepherds continue to fill out until they are around two years old, while the male German Shepherd growth rate continues until they reach two and a half years of age. Males are larger and require more time to fill out their chest and abdomen. As you can see by the German Shepherd weight chart, these dogs can continue to grow until they are three years old, but the majority of growth occurs within 24 months. If your GSD is older than 36 months and continues to put on weight, contact your veterinarian to ensure weight gain does not lead to obesity. How big should a 6-month-old German Shepherd be? A six-month-old German Shepherd puppy will be quite large, as many German Shepherds undergo massive growth spurts between two and five months old. By six months, a male German Shepherd will weigh 53 pounds on average, whereas a female will weigh about 46 pounds. How much bigger will my German Shepherd get? There are a few ways to gauge how much bigger a German Shepherd will get. First, check your puppy's age. If your GSD is younger than two years old, they definitely have room to keep growing! Another way to tell if your pup still has a lot of growing to do is their paw size. Do their paws look large compared to their legs and body? This is a classic adolescent feature of a dog and means your pup is likely still growing! Most of the time, a dog will not grow bigger than its larger parents. What is the size of a full-grown German shepherd? An adult male German Shepherd is typically 24 to 26 inches tall, while adult female German Shepherds are 22 to 24 inches tall, according to the American Kennel Club German Shepherd Standard. The estimated full-size varies significantly between sexes. In terms of weight, an adult male German Shepherd weighs anywhere from 75 to 90 pounds. A female German Shepherd weighs notably less at 55 to 70 pounds. Please keep in mind that these numbers are only estimates to give you an idea of how much bigger a German Shepherd puppy may get. Some dogs will be both smaller and larger than these weight ranges when fully grown due to a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Additionally, always provide fresh water for your puppy to stay hydrated throughout the day. Nutrition Tips for Proper Growth Avoid feeding your puppy table scraps or human food, as this can upset their stomach and lead to weight gain. German Shepherds frequently have sensitive stomachs. Feed your puppy on a regular schedule, typically three to four times a day. As your puppy grows, you can gradually reduce the number of feedings and increase the amount of food at each meal. They will. Create an environment that nurtures their physical and emotional well-being. Establishing a healthy sleeping and play schedule is crucial for your young pup. You can create a designated sleeping area for your puppy, such as a soft doggie bed , and encourage them to sleep there at night and during nap times. Just like humans, puppies greatly benefit from regular exercise. Exercise helps build strong muscles, maintain a healthy weight, and support the development of coordination and balance. Over-exercising can lead to joint problems in the future. In the world of puppy exercise, balance is the key. Your little fluffball is growing fast, and the right types of puppy exercise ensures they develop into a strong and athletic adult dog. Follow these valuable tips to ensure that your puppy gets the exercise they need while keeping their growing body safe and happy. Start with short walks on leash, around 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day. Mind Games: Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. Arrange playdates with other vaccinated puppies to let your fur baby learn the ropes of doggy interaction. Swim Time: If you have access to a safe and shallow kiddie pool, introduce your pup to water. Avoid strenuous exercise, and always monitor them for signs of fatigue or discomfort. Remember to also give your puppy plenty of opportunities to rest and recharge throughout the day. But before you start planning your first doggy spa day, remember this: your pup is still a baby, and gentle introductions are key. Spend quality time bonding with your pup—treats, belly rubs, and a friendly chat go a long way in building trust. Make sure your puppy associates grooming with love and positive experiences. But hold your horses! In fact, frequent bathing can strip their coat of natural oils and lead to skin issues. Instead, aim for a bath every months unless your pup finds a mud puddle to roll in or some other mess that prevents you from petting them. Opt for a mild, puppy-specific shampoo to keep their fur squeaky clean without irritating their sensitive skin. Tangled Up German Shepherds are known for their luxurious, double-layered coats. But your little ball of fluff still has their puppy coat. Grab your grooming comb and work those knots out gently, starting from the tips and working your way up. To help your young puppy get used to regular brushing, slide on grooming gloves which are gentle on their skin. Remember, patience is your best friend here! Invest in a good pair of dog nail grinders and take it slow. Grind a little at a time. Nail grinders are easier on a puppy than nail clippers. To make that happen, brush their teeth regularly with a dog-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste. My German Shepherd and I recommended a finger toothbrush that easily slips over your fingers. But beneath those cute tips, moisture can accumulate, leading to infections. Use an ear cleaning wipe to gently get their ears clean. Keep an eye out for their ear health. German Shepherds are known for their bushy tails and long fur along their hindquarters. This zone can get pretty dirty. A quick wipe-down with a deodorizing cleaning cloth should keep that tail wagging in style. And, you can give a bottom check for any potty leftovers that need a bit of wiping down. After all the grooming TLC, your week-old German Shepherd puppy will be feeling like a million bucks or at least a million treats. Reward them with praise, treats, and a few belly rubs to show them just how fluff-tastic they are. Keep the grooming sessions positive and upbeat. Make it a bonding experience, be patient, and remember, practice makes paw-fect! Introducing your puppy to new people, animals, and environments will help them become well-adjusted and confident adults. Introduce them to different people, animals, and environments. Expose your German Shepherd to as many positive, safe experiences as possible between 10 and 16 weeks. It helps build their confidence and reduces the chances of behavioral issues later on. Notice the emphasis on positive and safe? Take your puppy on walks in different neighborhoods and parks to expose them to new sights, sounds, and smells. Enroll your puppy in a puppy socialization class where they can learn from other puppies and experienced trainers. Always supervise your puppy during socialization and never force them into uncomfortable situations. With patience and positive reinforcement, your puppy will become a well-socialized and happy adult. The Road to a Well-Behaved Pup: Training Training your week-old German Shepherd is like molding clay; it requires patience, consistency, and a dash of humor for your sanity! Use positive reinforcement techniques such as treats and praise to encourage your puppy to follow your commands. Consistency is key, so make sure to practice these commands daily. Consistency is key. Use the same commands every time. Start teaching your puppy good leash manners early. Patience and positive reinforcement are your secret weapons! Nurturing good behavior in your German Shepherd starts early. Biting during play is often their way of engaging with you and their littermates. Teething can be uncomfortable, and chewing and biting can provide relief from the discomfort. Social Learning: Puppies also learn bite inhibition through interactions with their littermates. When one puppy bites too hard during play, the bitten puppy yelps or withdraws, teaching the biting puppy to use a gentler bite. So, why is your German Shepherd puppy still biting you at 10 weeks old? That hurts! If they do, praise them and offer a toy as an alternative. This helps them learn to control the force of their bite. Provide Chew Toys: Make sure your puppy has plenty of appropriate chew toys to satisfy their teething needs. Offer a variety of textures and shapes to keep them engaged and relieve teething discomfort. Socialization: Continue socializing your puppy with other dogs and puppies in controlled, safe environments. This helps them learn proper play behaviors and bite inhibition from their peers. Avoid harsh punishment; it can lead to fear or aggression. Use the right techniques for proper discipline. Love, laughter, patience, and a sprinkle of treats! Your young week-old German Shepherd is still learning, so help your pup by: Establishing a sleeping, playing, and exercise routine Feeding them the proper nutrition Finding the right socialization experiences Including positive training Letting them be puppies by having fun experiences! How do I potty train my week-old German Shepherd? Take them out after meals, naps, and playtime, and praise them when they go outside. Be patient; accidents happen. Is it normal for my puppy to chew everything in sight? Yes, absolutely! Puppies explore the world with their mouths. Provide plenty of chew toys, puppy-proof your home, work on positive training, and keep them supervised. When can I start leash training? Begin with short, positive sessions around 10—12 weeks. Use a harness, and reward them for walking beside you. Practice in a distraction-free environment, like indoors, first. My puppy is shy around strangers. Is this OK? German Shepherd puppy development stages and ages — week by week guide Welcome to our German Shepherd puppy development stages and ages — week by week guide Different breeds like all different babies develop at different rates. There are going to be many exciting events for you to look forward to. Whether you are bringing your 8 week German Shepherd puppy home or about to be blessed with a litter of puppies. This is going to be an exciting, demanding but hugely rewarding journey. Newborn puppies are born at around days after fertilization. Newborn puppies are born with their ears and eyes tightly sealed. The reason eyelids are sealed shut is to form a protective barrier for the fragile developing eye. This helps to protect them from any foreign object, bright lights, bacteria or any other microorganism that can cause disease or damage. In the same way puppies ear canals are closed at birth to make them effectively deaf. This is a protective barrier to protect the fragile underdeveloped machinery needed to hear. In a mature ear the pressure caused by sound will mechanically move structures in the ear. German Shepherd puppies are highly dependent upon their noses. Puppies navigate by smell from the moment they are born. This helps them to identify their mom, the very important milk supply, siblings and surroundings. Newborn puppies are born with a fur coat however they cannot control their own body temperature yet. To keep them warm they are dependant on their mothers or another heat source. If you live in a cooler climate installing a heat lamp would be ideal to help keep the puppies nice and warm. Germans Shepherds make amazing mothers and will be relied on a lot at this stage. Mother dogs will only leave their newborn puppies to go to the toilet, eat and drink. However, when mom has gone the newborn puppies are not completely useless. They are able to use their front paws to drag themselves towards a heat source. When mom is away the puppies will crawl together to preserve their body heat. Along with being able to drag themselves to a heat source newborn puppies are also able to drag themselves to their mothers to locate the milk supply. They will move their heads around to search for a nipple, latch on and suck strongly. Newborn puppies are not born with teeth these will also develop in the next several weeks. Other than the above puppies are completely dependent upon the care of their dedicated mom. Newborn puppies have little control over the rear end of their bodies. To encourage their pups to pass urine and bowel movements the mom will lick their bottoms. Anything produced mom will then lick up and swallow to keep her puppies and nest clean. Some pups will even double their birth weight! Your German Shepherd puppy will still be highly dependent upon their mom at this stage. Beneath all their fur the vital organs will be working hard to mature. This includes the eyes. Your puppy will not be ready to open their eyes yet but lots of changes are taking place to prepare them for grand opening. The ear canals will begin to open around the same time as the eyes. When the ear canals do open, the ears are much more formed than the eyes are at this point in time. Their eyesight usually takes around 8 weeks to reach its full potential. When their eyes become wider, they will reveal blueish-gray eyes which are hazy in appearance. Their eyesight will continue to develop until around 8 weeks old. The ear canals will also open around 2 weeks. The puppies hearing has been developing much quicker than their eyesight and they will be able to hear most things by the time their ear canals fully open. However, their amazing hearing ability will continue to enhance over the next several weeks. At the moment your German Shepherd puppy will have cute floppy ears. Their adorable tall ears can come up anywhere between 8 weeks and 6 months of age. Floppy ears are common until your German Shepherd finishes teething. By then the ear cartilage will become strong and hard enough for the ears to stand up permanently. Now is a good time to start handling the puppies and get them used to your voice. Most puppies are wormed for the first time when they are 2 weeks old. All this development has happened so quickly, but things are about to get even more exciting. Between 2 and 4 weeks your German Shepherd puppy will begin to stand up this is when the real fun begins. Puppies milky teeth will also start to develop between 2 to 4 weeks. These sharp little teeth will remain until about weeks of age. These little daggers play an important role during the weaning process. Even the most patient moms will struggle to nurse with these sharp painful teeth. This reluctance to nurse will prompt the German Shepherds to seek alternative food sources. These sharp teeth will then help to make up for the lack of jaw strength when eating solid foods. Finally, these sharp puppy teeth play an important role in teaching the pups to gauge their bite pressure when playing with their mom and siblings. This is an essential life lesson that enables our powerful German Shepherds to become safer companions as they mature into strong adult dogs. During the last few weeks mom has done an amazing job of getting her babies strong and their mobility will have come on leaps and bounds well not quite yet but by 3 weeks of age your German Shepherd puppy will begin to trotter around. Most 3 week old German Shepherd puppies can stand and sit. With their baby teeth starting to cut through a lot of breeders. Especially those with large litters will start introducing some solid foods. This helps relieve some of the pressure for the devoted German Shepherd mom. When weaning puppies, you need to start off by soaking their food in either water or puppy milk replacement formula to make it mushy and more comfortable for them to eat. As they start to interact and play with their siblings their personalities will really start to show. You may also notice them starting to playfully growl at each other. At 3 weeks old it will become easier to start identifying different members of the pack. Breeders and moms will be kept on their toes and paws over the next few weeks. As the pups start getting more confident on their feet they will be running around and playing enthusiastically. At 4 weeks old they will begin to wag their adorable little tails. With solid food becoming a major part of their diet the pups will be passing bigger bowel movements. They will be able to show more control of their bowel movements as they take themselves away from their brothers and sisters to perform their business. At this stage mom will be taking a much more relaxed approach to parenting and there will be a lot more for the breeder to clear up. By this point mealtimes are a messy process. If it is warm and safe enough to do so we would recommend taking the pups out in the yard for feeding. German Shepherd puppies are becoming a lot stronger at vocalisations by 4 weeks old. When mom returns to her babies the litter will noisily greet her. Around 4 weeks of age your puppies will need to be wormed again. From this week onwards human interaction is very important in order to form relationships with people. Including different noises and smells. This exposure will ensure your German Shepherd puppy turns into a confident, friendly individual. Mom will also be doing an important job of teaching her puppies to not bite too hard. Even an 8 week old German Shepherd puppy would have the power in their jaws to break the smaller bones in humans fingers. This is why mom teaching her puppies bite inhibition is so important. For more information on bite inhibition please see our guide on German Shepherd bite inhibition. By 5 weeks old German Shepherd puppies will be eating a lot of solid foods, several times throughout the day. Those sharp little teeth would have done their job and mom will be gradually weaning her pups of the dependency on her milk. When mom does feed her puppies, she will only do so for a short period whilst standing up. They will be eating between five and six small meals a day. Although the pups no longer rely on mom for milk, they still need her help and guidance for the next few weeks. Mom will be teaching her babies important life skills to live alongside humans. In some countries 6 week old puppies are taken away from their mothers and moved into their new home. We would not recommend this as the puppies will miss out on continued bite inhibition training from their siblings and mother. This can result in a puppy who bites too hard which can be challenging to manage as they get older. In the USA your puppy will be due their first combined 5-in-1 vaccine at 6 weeks old. This vaccine helps to immunizes your puppy against hepatitis, parvo, distemper, parainfluenza and coronavirus. Most puppies will also need to be wormed again at 6 weeks old. Their last week together will consist of plenty of socialization and playing. Most breeders will arrange a 7 week health check up with the vet to make sure your bundle of fluff is fit and healthy to go to their new home. In the UK some breeders will arrange for the pups first 8 week vaccination to take place during this check. Although some vets advise against it. By the end of this week German Shepherd puppies are ready to leave their mothers and move into their new homes for good. The week you get to take your new puppy home. This will be a very exciting time, but you may also be feeling a bit nervous. There will be some challenged along the way for new puppy owners and your puppy will take some time to adjust to life without its mother and siblings. In the UK the first combined vaccination will help to immunizes your puppy against distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis. The first puppy injection in the UK typically will happen between 8 and 10 weeks. Some breeders would have trained the puppies to poop and pee on newspapers or puppy pads. From the moment you get them home it is important to show your German Shepherd puppy where to pee and poop. Puppies naturally like to pee where they have done so before so to avoid building history of peeing in your home is best if you can to avoid it. The more you can avoid accidents from happening as much as possible from the start the faster the puppy training process should be. All puppies are different, and some will get this quicker than others. The main thing to remember is not to discipline your puppy for accidents. The most successful way to potty train is to reward success and ignore accidents. Just clean them up quickly and thoroughly. Your puppy will love nothing more than being praised. For more information please see our guide on How to potty train your German Shepherd puppy. Already your German Shepherd puppy will feel like part of the family. German Shepherds puppies are always adorable but at 9 weeks they are at the age where they are still puppy-like but very clumsy, curious and keen to play with her new family, which is very cute. Your German Shepherds unique personality will make you feel very proud. At 9 weeks your cheeky German Shepherd pup will be feeling more confident, with this the need to explore everything and anything may end up getting them into trouble. Your puppy will develop new sleeping patterns and feeding routines which you will need to adapt to. Most puppies will sleep between eighteen and twenty hours a day at 9 weeks old. During the day when you are with your puppy generally you will not need to shut them away in a crate to nap. German Shepherd puppies are often more than happy to sleep whilst family life goes on around them. However, there will be times when sleeping in a crate is better and safer for your puppy. You must not leave a 9 week old puppy to sleep outside the crate if you are not home to watch them if they wake. Puppies are into everything and many innocent items found in the house could be a potential hazard to your inquisitive pup. For more information please see our guide on how to puppy proof your home. Even if your puppy can barely keep their eyes open other pups and children will still want to play and your German Shepherd puppy may find it hard to refuse. After a hard day of play the peace and quiet of a crate will enable your pup to have a well-deserved nap. If your German Shepherd puppy does need to go to the toilet in the night make sure you keep it short and to a minimum. Establishing a daily routine is the best way to get your German Shepherd puppy to sleep through the night. Part of this schedule will involve mealtimes. Your 9 week old puppy will need four meals a day. Split these up throughout the day and try to stick to similar times. This is to stop encouraging your puppy to wake up earlier and earlier because they associate waking with food. You should always reward your puppy either vocally, with a favourite toy or treats for good behaviour and ignore bad behaviour. Puppies and dogs want to be praised so they respond very well to positive encouragement. Punishing puppies and dogs may have a short term positive effect on their behaviour but long term you could be setting them up to fail. It is very important to socialise and expose your puppy to other humans, dogs and different scenarios whilst they are young. This maybe hard before your puppy has had all its vaccines however getting many different people to come and visit you at your home will enable them to get used to visitors. Before their full vaccinations you can also, you can take you German Shepherd puppy out and about with you to expose them to the outside world as long as you can carry them. If you live in the USA, your puppy will be due their second combined 5-in-1 vaccine at 9 weeks old. In the USA a minimum of three sets of the combined vaccine are required for your puppy. Although you cannot put your puppy down outside until after their final vaccination. Puppies 10 week injection In the UK is a booster vaccination to help immunizes your puppy against distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis. Check with your vet what date after their jabs your German Shepherd puppy will be able to go down outside. Your puppy will then need a booster between 6 and 12 months old. If you live in the USA at 12 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be due their booster for the combined 5in1 vaccine against hepatitis, distemper, parainfluenza, parvo and coronavirus and a vaccine against rabies and leptospirosis. If you live in a high risk area, they may also need to be given the vaccination to help immunize them against Lyme. If applicable at 16 weeks your German Shepherd puppy may need to have a fourth combined 5in1 vaccine. A minimum of three combined injections are required in the USA. Check with your vet what date they will be able to be out down outside. By 10 weeks old your German Shepherd puppy will be able to control their bladder a lot more. Potentially up to several hours. This is great time for you to introduce them to the big wide world and develop their social skills which you have already been building the foundations. When taking your German Shepherd puppy out try to introduce them to as many other friendly dogs, humans and noises you can. This will help your German Shepherd puppy to grown into a confident well-rounded dog. At 3 months old your German Shepherd will go down from four daily meals to three. These three portions will be larger than what they are used to which may cause stomach upset. If your German Shepherd puppy does get an upset stomach, try going back to four smaller meals for a couple of days and they try the three larger portions again. This can be a challenging time as your adorable German Shepherd puppy turns into a furry crocodile. Luckily the teething stage is only a phase as with human babies and short lived. In most cases your puppy biting should stop around when they are around 7 months old and have their adult teeth. You maybe noticing your German Shepherds gorgeous ears fluctuating between floppy and pointy. By the time your puppy has finished teething their ears should tick up all the way. This usually happens around months. As they grow their cartilage becomes stronger. Some puppies need another month or so to help them cope without going out for frequent toilet breaks. Even when your German Shepherd puppy is toilet trained occasional accidents are normal. German Shepherds do have large ears but they tend to grow into them as they get older. German Shepherd puppies will begin to grow their new adult coat between 4 and 6 months old. To make way for their adult coat all the puppy hair has to go. For several weeks you will notice an increase in shedding. This is a completely normal part of growing up for your German Shepherd. Being a double coat breed German Shepherds dogs have a topcoat and an undercoat. Twice a year your pup will shed their undercoat. Usually in spring and again in fall. They also shed in general days a year so be prepared for a lot of fur! They will very much look like a smaller version of their adult selves. Although your German Shepherd may look older on the inside, they are still very much a puppy. If you are looking to get your puppy neutered or spayed the recommended age is 6 to 9 months. However, it is common for some female puppies to get spayed at 4 months old. Summary: Your German Shepherd is bound to give you so much joy and happiness throughout its life. There will be challenges along the way but remember this is completely normal. German Shepherds are such an amazing breed and you will have a loyal friend for life. Related Posts. Even though you can train a German Shepherd at this age quite easily, the amount of commands that you can teach is quite low, and they are partially just for looks. Though 10 weeks is the point where that growth starts decreasing, and halves at around 4 months or so, before completely stopping. Overall, for female German Shepherds average weight is 8 to 9 kg 16 to 18 lbs , for male dogs it is 10 to 12 kg 20 to 24 lbs. And still, some owners are struggling with that problem. So what should you do, in that case: First of all, for many young German Shepherds the ears are not consistently up. There may be periods when they are up, and sometimes they are just leaning on one side. It is completely normal — they are gradually developing into an adult, and their body changes relatively. A good solution would be just to wait and see. If the ears have been damaged, whether by accident, or by tampering with them, you should definitely take your dog to a vet clinic, where vets will decide what to do. Lastly, if the puppy is older than a year or half a year , and the ears are still not up, then you should, as always, consult a vet. They may operate on the ears if necessary. Behavior It is important, that before the puppy passes the 10 week age mark, it should already know bite inhibition before everything else. Nobody wants an aggressive German Shepherd, does anyone? Should go before every other command, as these tricks also induce patience for the German Shepherd. Learning them first will prove to be beneficial in further training. Lie down. Recommendation: walk the dog for about half an hour or more first, so that it would be tired and thus would be more focused on the task. Additionally, you should never blame your dog if it does something wrong — just repeat the command, until it works out. Then, greet your dog for doing everything correctly. A puppy will never learn anything in a strict and unwelcome environment. But it will surely remember everything if you make it a good and relaxing time, or some sort of a game. In the end, we wish you best of luck with your 10 week GSD, and thank you very much for reading.

The second way is described above, as an F1B. So breeding an F1 Labradoodle or Goldendoodle back to a Poodle to get an F1B, is resulting in a second generation of the hybrid. Are Goldendoodles appropriate for apartment living? Cindy Suit T Are Goldendoodles appropriate for apartment living? Yes, Goldendoodles are a very adaptable breed that can thrive in all residential settings. All they need is proper love and care from you to flourish. Plus, potential owners have the option of choosing a standard, mini, toy or teacup Goldendoodle based on the ideal size fit for their living conditions. While this is an impossible question to answer with any specificity, the average lifespan of a Goldendoodle is calculated to be between 10 and 15 years. Do Goldendoodles get attached to one person? Cindy Suit T Do Goldendoodles get attached to one person? Goldendoodles are extremely affectionate dogs who love to give and receive outward signs of love. They have the propensity to become more attached to one person, but their drive for attention prevents them from limiting their interactions in this way. To the dog, anyone willing to spend a few minutes giving a belly rub is worth an abundance of licking. Are Goldendoodles lap dogs? Cindy Suit T Are Goldendoodles lap dogs? Whether your canine companion is a five-pound teacup or a pound standard, they will see themselves as equally small and act accordingly. If that sounds the least unpleasant, know that new owners quickly get used to having their entire laps swallowed and grow to love these times of bonding. Cream French Bulldog Puppy These are just the sweetest little things! They have blue eyes at first see below for more details. Their noses and paw pads darken to become solid black, usually within 24 hours. Their smooth, glossy coats are solid cream, but this color may lighten as the pup develops. French Bulldogs have a long history of severe health problems, so they need extra care and attention. You can buy unique skincare products designed for dogs to reduce the risk of allergies and infections. Wrinkles cause this dip in the skin, possibly trapping dirt and feces. It will also stop them from gorging their food all at once, reducing the risk of digestive problems. Smaller meals provided more regularly will help to ease this. For example, reputable breeders with excellent bloodlines will charge higher prices because their breeding program involves more expense. The price will also be affected by location, demand, and the sex or color of your dog. Even so, they may raise the price slightly to recover some of the expenses of breeding. One thing good breeders never do is breed specifically to get a particular color. Too many unscrupulous people are willing to take your cash, which is bad news for your bank account, but even worse for the dogs. Although thousands of online scams involve fake websites and ads for non-existent puppies, many real pups for sale online are produced in puppy mills. There are around 10, puppy mills in the US, where dogs are kept in miserable conditions. They are not cared for, never experience love or affection, and live in filthy kennels until they are no longer useful. Most puppy mill pups are sickly, poorly bred, and will cost you a packet in vet bills. While you might think reputable breeders charge too much, breeding is an expensive business when done correctly. When you buy from a reputable breeder, you know that the parents and pups have been treated well and tested for common health conditions. Your dog has an excellent chance of being healthy and living a long and happy life. Although brindle is the most common color, rare colors like blue appear to be growing in popularity. Many breeders are opposed to using dogs that carry this gene in their breeding programs as they are believed to increase the risk of certain diseases and health conditions. In most cases, they tend to change color after several weeks, usually turning brown, although green and amber are present in some breeds. As you might notice, none of these colors are included in the AKC breed standard! Sadly, blue eyes are not permitted either, probably to reduce the risk of further health problems. Chocolate Cream French Bulldog Photo from: mario. You can read more about rare colors further down, and the chocolate cream version is included there. Cream Frenchies are pretty rare anyway, but to get a chocolate and cream dog takes some doing. A pup will have to inherit two copies of the gene that dilutes black to brown to be chocolate. Oddly enough, the E-locus is dominant over all other colors! Any dog that possesses two copies of this gene will be completely cream, regardless of what other colors might be present. To the untrained eye, they look much like the blue version. However, when seen side by side, the difference is clear. This fantastic color, caused by a recessive gene, dilutes both the chocolate liver and the blue coat and is also referred to as isabella. Taking this one step further, Lilac Frenchies with the dilution gene will appear much lighter, usually with blue eyes. These dogs are known as Lilac Cream French Bulldogs. As we referred to earlier in the AKC breed standards, a pied dog is the same as a piebald. For Frenchies, the term pied is mainly used. First, what is a Pied French Bulldog? Therefore, you can have a white dog with black patches covering the body, including the head and neck. These black and white dogs are in demand, possibly in second place after brindle. Instead, the cream base has light fawn patches. All dog breeds suffer from health problems, although some are worse than others. French Bulldogs are more prone to certain health issues because of their size and shape. As dogs naturally have a long muzzle, this feature — a result of selective breeding — causes significant health concerns. The airways are crammed into the skull, causing breathing difficulties that may lead to fainting, collapse, and death. This causes the eyes to bulge, making them prone to injury from knocks and scrapes. They might even come out of the socket if the dog hits its head. The French Bulldog is prone to hip dysplasia because of decades of deliberate breeding. The problem is caused by a malformed hip joint that allows the bones to grate against each other, making movement difficult and uncomfortable. Surgery is often needed in severe cases. The kneecap usually slots into a groove in the bone. When it slips out of place, it stops the dog from extending its knee fully. The danger of pups becoming stuck in the birth canal is too much of a risk, so most French Bulldogs are born by C-section. Although safer, this method is not without its risks. Natural oils, dirt, sweat, and saliva become trapped inside, making a perfect environment for germs to thrive. While some allergic reactions are mild, they still make life uncomfortable for your furry friend. However, some reactions can be severe, resulting in anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal. Sadly, the Cream French Bulldog has an even greater risk of allergies because of its color. It all comes down to coat color genetics. However, we know enough to be convinced that some colors and patterns are bad news! Coat Color Pigments Dogs get their colors from two pigments: eumelanin and pheomelanin. These tell the cells in the hair follicles which colors to produce. Many people have concerns about the White French Bulldog as they believe that all white dogs are albino. However, very few white dogs are true albinos! Albinism carries a severe risk of blindness, eye damage, skin cancer, and light sensitivity. You can take some comfort in the fact that the White Frenchie is listed in the AKC breed standards, as they usually bar any colors that carry a health risk. In truth, some colors should be labeled color patterns, and merle fits this category, along with sable and brindle. Sadly, however, it seems to be linked to severe health issues. The merle gene responsible for the random, mottled pattern that appears on piebald or pied and solid color coats can also affect skin pigment, as well as the structures that form the eyes and ears. When two merle dogs are bred, pups that inherit this gene may suffer from deafness and eyesight problems. Many merle dogs have blue eyes, and some have one blue and one brown eye. As unusual and beautiful as this is, any dog with these qualities is banned from shows. For the sake of clarity, the merle gene rarely causes problems unless two merle dogs are bred. The jury is still out on this one! Many experts claim that the solid black Frenchie is the rarest, while others point to fascinating colors like blue, chocolate, merle, and lilac. By comparison, we only found one instance of a Chocolate Cream French Bulldog! You also hear about such oddities as the blue merle, blue fawn, blue pied, blue brindle, lilac cream, chocolate cream, and so on. There are also suggestions that specific rare colors are achieved by creating hybrids with other dogs, like the Pug. A good breeder might produce one or two litters a year. The average Frenchie litter is three pups. So, out of six puppies in one year, only one of these might be a rare or unusual color. Finally, we have to include the Cream French Bulldog in the list of rare colors. These lovely come in a fantastic array of colors, though some of the less common ones are considered non-standard and undesirable. However, its light color appeals to people, and it has recently become more popular. Social media is probably the biggest driver of trends and fashions these days, and, rightly or wrongly, dogs have become fashion accessories as well as pets. As awareness of different breeds or unusual colors spreads across social media pages, demand for particular dogs rises. So, while the brindle French Bulldog is the most common color and has been for some time, this could change soon. This is why many breeders, kennel clubs, and purebred dog enthusiasts believe that people should avoid breeding and buying dogs outside of the breed standards. They think that the whole point of purebred dogs is to preserve and improve the breed, and creating unusual colors, they argue, could jeopardize the breed. We should also consider the health implications of creating unusual colors, particularly where the merle gene is concerned. As fashions and fads come and go, it might be that the French Bulldog falls from favor, outdone by another adorable breed. However, the Cream French Bulldog is safe — for now. It can be a lapdog, show dog, or both! As long as dog lovers buy them, the breeders will produce them. In conclusion, we have to keep in mind that Frenchies have in-built health problems. While breeders and kennel clubs frown on any deviations from the standards, often citing health concerns, it has to be said that these little dogs are already at a disadvantage. Many animal welfare groups question whether it is ethical or fair to continue breeding them at all. Before you buy one, consider that they are predisposed to health conditions that will require many visits to the vet. As they can live for between 10 and 14 years, this can amount to money and stress! Read Next:. Share Tweet True cream color is often confused with fawn in French Bulldogs. The stunning color adds a divine feature to the personality of these little miniatures. However, proper research is essential before you buy a pure cream colored French bulldog. That is why I feel it is important to know the distinguishing features of cream French bulldogs. Cream vs. White vs. Fawn French Bulldogs A true cream French bulldog has a slightly dull white shade. Although it is a solid color, it is slightly off white. The breed is recessive dilute of fawn breed line. The clear and shiny coat has no marking on the coat that complement perfectly black twitchy nose, eye rims, pigments, lips and paws. Interestingly the cream French bulldog is born in pure white color, but it develops black edges on its rims and ears within 24 hours. As cute French bulldog puppies grow, the solid cream color gets prominent with light cream edges to ears. Cream French bulldogs never develop sharp color patterns on their body like pied or fawn. True cream color in French bulldog is not common and is very different than white. They have darker and dusky eye rims while white or pied ones develop black spots on the nose first. Plus, white French bulldog has pink eye rim, but there is no pink pigment and ticking in cream French bulldog. Although there is nothing wrong with buying these French bulldog puppies as they have stunning shades, they may show some health problems. Removal of pigment and deafness are common issues in extremely white French bulldogs. The breed removes pigment from their ears and face, often causing deafness. Moreover, French bulldog with unpigmented skin is susceptible to skin cancer as compared to those which have more pigment. The defect is also very common in pied breeds with blue eyes. It is a genetic defect. Cream French Bulldog Breeders The good news is that you will find many reputable breeders who breed true cream French bulldogs through different breeding programs. Blue Heaven French bulldog is a good choice if you are looking to buy a cute cream French bulldog puppy. They also have many cream colored French bulldogs for sale. The breeder follows high-quality breeding standards and has a great variety of tans, blues, brindles, and whites. They keep good quality check on French bulldogs genetic defects and responsibly breed the different breed lines. Bottom Line All in all, cream French bulldog puppies are simply adorable and come with all the great features you love about this breed. However, all you need to do is be a little more careful while spotting the differences among white, fawn, pied and cream colored French bulldog puppies. Post navigation. Learn more. French Bulldogs are undeniably one of the most popular dog breeds across the globe. The American Kennel Club ranks them as the most popular dog in New York City and fourth-most desirable dog breeds in the world. The Frenchies are playful and alert, have pleasant and infectious personalities, adapt well to family life, are good around children, and get along well with other pets. Another unique characteristic of the Frenchies is the variety of coat color patterns they come in. There are many physical variations of these dogs, especially when it comes to coat colors. This means that if you prefer dogs of certain colors, this breed is sure to accommodate your preferences. If it is your first time to deal with Frenchies, however, picking out a new pup can be a little bit intimidating because there are so many terms that are used to describe different Frenchie coat color patterns. To help you choose the right pet, this post will focus on Pied French Bulldogs. We will cover what a Pied Frenchie is and what you can expect when you own one. Pied or Piebald Frenchies are French Bulldogs with predominantly white coats with large dark-colored patches on different parts of the body—mostly on the back, under the neck, and around the ears and eyes. In other words, for a Frenchie to be recognized as Pied, it must have at least 50 percent of patches or spots of white and another color. However, the spots or patches can also be dark gray, black, or brown. So: Fawn Pied French Bulldogs: May have a white coat with fawn patches or a fawn color with black patches. Cream Pied French Bulldogs: Have cream coats with fawn patches. Blue Pied Frenchies: Have blue coats with patches of white or cream. So, Pied can be said to be the exact opposite of Brindle. A dog has 39 pairs of chromosomes. Out of these 39 pairs, one pair is a sex chromosome—it is what determines whether a dog is male or female. Autosomal inheritance of a gene simply implies that a gene is located on one of the other 38 pairs of chromosomes. This means that both a male and female dog are equally likely to have the gene. Recessive means that a dog must inherit both copies of the gene to display the trait in this case, a pied coat pattern. Instead, he or she will be a carrier. Instead, you will end up with all solid colored Frenchies who are carriers of the Pied gene. Pied French Bulldog Grooming Needs Pied Frenchies are fairly easy to groom as all they need is occasional brushing to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils evenly, keeping their coats healthy. So, you can always schedule the hair combing tasks to weekends as brushing their coats once a week will just suffice. Here are also other great grooming tools that we recommend for Pied Frenchies: 25 Best Deshedding Tools for Short Hair Dogs Ear and facial wrinkles, as well as the areas under the tail of Pied Frenchies, are susceptible to dirt and dust. Strive to keep them clean and dry to prevent potential bacterial infection. Every time you clean them, take your time to dry the skin between the folds. Considering that Frenchies are not as active as other dog breeds, their nails tend to become uncomfortably long within a short period. Due to their brachycephalic shaped faces, they have narrow nostrils and shortened muzzles, which somehow limit the supply of oxygen to their bodies. Nevertheless, they are heavy-chested and need short-time exercise routines to keep their weight in check. Some of the best exercises for these cute, short-legged canines include daily short walks, chasing a hanging piece, catching a ball, etc. Getting them a motion-activated toy can also take care of their exercise needs perfectly. Their shorts and disproportionately large heads also make it hard for these little cuties to stay afloat in water. You should always take great care of your Frenchie when he is around swimming pools, rivers, and ponds. The condition can cause anything from loud or labored breathing, snoring, snuffing to collapse of the airway. Heat and Cold Intolerance: These dogs are susceptible to heat exhaustion and often need air-conditioned environments. If you live in cold regions, always dress your Frenchie with a winter jacket. Patellar Luxation: This is a common problem in small dogs, including Frenchies, and occurs when the patella is not properly aligned and luxates or slips in and out. Related Posts: 12 Best Luxating Patella Dog Supplements Potential for Obesity: Because of their heavy bone structures, even a slight weight gain of 5lbs can be problematic for these little cuties. Wipe your Cream Frenchie well and dry their wrinkles using a towel to absorb excess moisture. Is Cream French Bulldog hypoallergenic? No, Cream French Bulldogs are not hypoallergenic. The reason behind it can be genetics, allergies, infections, or autoimmune diseases. In Cream Frenchies, alopecia is due to the presence of the dilution gene. Tracheal collapse Tracheal collapse is when the trachea or windpipe becomes weak and collapses. It can cause coughing, gagging, and difficulty breathing. Treatment involves steroids and medications. If you have an experience to share, please let us know. We love receiving feedback. I had decided that if I were to get another dog I wanted to get a Golden Retriever. Great communication with the breeder, Annabel. My Kingsley is now 10 months old, she is so smart, lovable and a blessing all around. Such a great temperament, easy to train and a great companion! I now wonder what I ever did without her! Thank you Hufflepups! Kingsley A good friend of mine had a dog named bubba who I instantly fell in love with. His mannerisms and his loving and smiley personality made everyone who met bubba want a bubba. I asked her where she got him and she then told me Hufflepup Goldens out of wasilla, Alaska. I immediately contacted them and spoke with Annabel who is the breeder. From the moment I first spoke to her to picking up my own good boy Rexx it was nothing but smooth and she constantly kept me as well as the other potential owners in the loop on the progress of the moms pregnancy, the birth of the Goldens, the vet appointments, kennel training, potty training, to picking up the Goldens to take them to their forever home. Annabel is nothing but friendly and extremely helpful through everything as well as keeping up with how they are doing after they go to their forever home. Questions on food or other helpful information she has never had a problem with guiding me through things to make sure Rexx is a healthy happy boy! Such a well tempered, and loving dog. He is very healthy and always very happy. Anytime someone meets Rexx they instantly fall in love with him. He is thee most amazing addition to my family. Rexx is very good with everybody with all ages, as well other dogs of all breeds. He is extremely gentle and loving with our one and a half year old. It takes everything to be patient on the time my significant other will let me have another lol. That was until my mom got Kingsley from Annabel. I helped coparent her and watched her when my mom was gone. Her temperament and unconditional love were amazing! That was then I decided that if I got a dog, it would be from Hufflepup goldens. He learned his name and to sit in a day! I recommend her to everyone I meet. The whole process of getting her was above and beyond. Communication was timely and they kept us in the loop through out the process with regular updates. Puppies also get introduced to puppy culture which is a plus. Our pup received a vet check before we picked her to make sure she was healthy and ready to go home to us. I have two puppies from different litters from them and they are the perfect dogs for us. They are the ideal family dog in the fact that they are gentle, well behaved with some training that they pick up quickly, and still playful. They are just as beautiful and perfect as their siblings. You cannot go wrong with a puppy from Hufflepup! From proper genetic testing of the parents to conditioning the puppies to new surroundings and animals, I knew we were making the right choice and still stand by that choice today. I will always be grateful for the quality of breeding and friendliness of Hufflepup Goldens. You can tell they truly care about the long term success and health of their litters. Our girl Harper is the smartest, most well-behaved and beautiful companion we could have asked for. I highly recommend them to anyone I know looking for a thorough and trustworthy Golden breeder! We are so happy we found Hufflepup Goldens. She was very responsive and worked with us as we were military stationed at Eielson AFB. She always sent pictures of all the pups, kept us updated each week and let us do visits until we were able to pick up our new four legged family member. When the day comes to get another golden I will definitely use her again regardless of where the military sends us. To anyone looking for a Golden I highly recommend Hufflepup Goldens! Bentley Our young kids begged almost daily for another dog after ours cross the Rainbow Bridge several years ago in another state. Being military and moving a lot we promised our kids we would get another once my husband retired. Growing up I had a Golden Retriever and he was an amazing dog. I knew a Golden would make an excellent addition to our family and would be a great companion for our kids. Knowing Alaska was in our future as our forever home I started a lot of research on reputable breeders and found that Annabel and Hufflepup Goldens was only one of a couple that were repeatedly highly recommended for Golden Retrievers due to her standards and the health of her dogs. I contacted her in early and had a great phone conversation where she answered all of my questions. Our kids waited five years for a puppy and almost two weeks ago we finally brought our sweet boy home. Brody is almost 10 weeks old and already has a sweet, comforting, playful personality. You cannot go wrong here! Tobias is only 18 months old and he has the very best temperament and is graduating from his service dog training program very soon. Annabel does an incredible job giving her puppies the very best foundation to build on! Tobias is a confident, even-tempered and attentive puppy who has not only learned his jobs with me, but also is just an amazing family pet on his down time. Tobias runs along side my horse when I go for rides, he goes to work with me and he sleeps next to me. I get compliments on how handsome he is and how amazing his temperament is pretty much everywhere I go. If you are wanting a dog with a good foundation, Annabel is hands-down the very best Breeder with the sweetest dogs! My story started when a friend turned me on to Hufflepup Goldens on Facebook. I contacted Annabel right away and put down a deposit. Annabel was such a joy to work with, very communicative, and I could tell she loves doing this and loves those puppies! We have enjoyed this journey so much that our daughter and family had to have a Hufflepup too - and to boot, her 9 week old pup, Lilly, is Bella's sister! Puppy Culture is wonderful and because of the puppies start from the love of Annabel and family using Puppy Culture, Bella has been easy to train and is a pleaser. Part of this is because of Annabel's expertise and the rest goes to the smarts of Golden Retrievers! I highly recommend Annabel and Hufflepup Goldens as your next breeder! Bella "I found Hufflepuff Goldens through some friends of mine who have a golden from Annabel when I was looking to add a second puppy to my family. My little Jedi is perfect. He plays so well with his sister. I loved the puppy culture training. He was easy to crate and potty train. He's a snuggler and loves everyone. It's apparent that Hufflepuff puppies are loved and part of the family. I'm not sure how Annabel does it, but the pups and their pens were always immaculate when visiting, and come pick day you have plenty of time, although my little Jedi picked me. If you are looking to add a golden to your family I can't recommend Hufflepuff and Annabel enough. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for Alaska Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Increased water intake is often typical for growing puppies as their kidneys continue to develop. Because of this, it is important to provide access to fresh and clean water for your puppy. Still curious why your puppy drinks a lot of water? Read on as we discuss the normal water intake of puppies, why puppies tend to drink more water, and the risks associated with overdrinking! The amount of water a puppy needs can vary depending on factors such as their size, age, activity level, and the weather. For example, a pound puppy would require 5 to 10 ounces of water daily. As a result, they may have an increased thirst compared to adult dogs. During puppyhood, their kidneys cannot properly concentrate urine which leads to the increased frequency of urination until around 11 to 16 weeks of age. As their bodies grow, they also require water to support the development and proper functioning of their organs. Because of this, it may be difficult to keep your puppies properly hydrated. It is crucial to provide access to fresh, clean water at all times to ensure their hydration needs are met. While increased water intake is often considered normal for growing puppies, it can also be a sign of an underlying disease or health condition. Image Credit: marketlan, Shutterstock Risks of Drinking Too Much Water While staying hydrated is crucial for puppies, excessive drinking can pose risks to their health. One concern is the potential for overhydration, also known as water intoxication. This condition occurs when the concentration of sodium in the bloodstream becomes diluted, causing issues such as lethargy, vomiting, seizures, and even coma. When Is Overdrinking a Cause for Concern? However, certain situations may warrant closer attention. Additionally, if your puppy exhibits signs such as frequent urination, excessive panting, weight loss, or changes in behavior, these could be indicators of an underlying health issue that requires professional evaluation. Image Credit: Mihail Guta, Shutterstock Signs of Overhydration While most common owners monitor the dangers of dehydration, overhydration can be equally harmful and should be properly monitored as well. To help you recognize the signs of overhydration and excessive drinking, here are some common presentations to look out for: Lethargy or weakness. There are many factors that affect how much water a dog drinks throughout the day. There are also many medical reasons dogs can have excessive thirst. Canned Food Diet Canned food contains more water than dry food, so dogs that eat canned food may drink less water. This is because they are getting a portion of their daily water intake from their food. They also tend to be more active and lose more water through vomiting or diarrhea. Geriatric dogs can also drink more or less due to cognitive dysfunction or medical issues. Medications Certain medications can cause increased thirst and urination. These medications include diuretics such as furosemide or torsemide , anti-seizure medications such as phenobarbital , and corticosteroids such as prednisone. Hot Climates Dogs that live in warmer areas can become dehydrated more easily, increasing their water intake requirements. Frequent Exercise or Increased Activity Dogs that exercise frequently will require more water to hydrate themselves. Puppies also might drink more water than adult dogs due to higher activity levels. Health Conditions Certain medical issues can lead to excessive thirst. The most common reasons include: Electrolyte Imbalances Sodium or salt imbalances can lead to increased thirst and urination in dogs. Sodium draws water to it, and the kidneys will not hold or store water appropriately if there is an imbalance of sodium and potassium in the water. Dehydration, high-sodium meals, certain toxins , and other medical conditions can cause electrolyte issues. Dehydration Heat, exercise, and illness can all cause dehydration and lead to water-seeking behavior. Signs associated with dehydration can include lethargy, tacky gums, ropy saliva, bright red gums , excessive panting , and skin tenting. Vomiting or Diarrhea These can lead to dehydration, causing a dog to drink more water. If the gastrointestinal signs are frequent, severe, or persistent, seek veterinary care. Kidney Failure Kidney failure or renal failure is a chronic progressive condition defined as the inability of the kidneys to efficiently filter waste products. As toxins filter out from the bloodstream, they draw excess water with them, which may lead to increased urination. This in turn causes dehydration and an increase in water intake. Kidney failure ranges in severity, depending on how advanced it is. In the early stages, only monitoring and diet change may be needed. For more severe kidney failure, hospitalization may be required. Diabetes Mellitus Diabetes is a disease where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body stops responding the insulin produced. This causes a rise in blood sugar glucose levels. The body tries to eliminate excessive sugar through the urine, and the glucose draws water with it. Increased thirst and urination are the first clinical signs of diabetes noted by dog owners. Untreated diabetes mellitus can lead to a potentially fatal condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetes Insipidus Diabetes insipidus is a rare condition in dogs causing excessive thirst and large amounts of urine. Despite drinking large amounts of water, these dogs can often become dehydrated from the amount of urine they are producing. Though frustrating, this condition does not require immediate medical therapy. This causes increased thirst and urination. Other clinical signs include a pot-belly appearance, panting, thin skin, hair loss, and increased hunger. It is often diagnosed by the presence of symptoms. Pyometra This life-threatening condition is an infection of the uterus in female dogs that have not been spayed. Dogs will often drink more water to compensate for the increase in urination. Pyometra often has other symptoms, such as pus originating from the vulva, fever, lethargy, changes in appetite, and vomiting. Pyometra is fatal if left untreated, due to the infection spreading throughout the body sepsis. Liver Infection Bacterial infection of the liver most commonly caused by infection with Leptospirosis leads to increased urine production and increased thirst. This infection is fatal if left untreated. Leptospirosis is passed through infected rodent urine and is most commonly found in stagnant water puddles or ponds. There is a vaccine that protects dogs against this infection. If your dog has been drinking a lot of water or been recently swimming in a pond or drinking out of rain puddles, and they are not up to date on their Leptospirosis vaccination, get them to a veterinarian as soon as possible for testing and treatment. Dogs will often drink water when they have an upset tummy. Though we are unsure if this is to give them relief or to induce vomiting, it occurs frequently. This can be secondary to many medical issues, including mild inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract gastroenteritis , pancreatitis , inflammatory bowel disease , foreign body obstruction , and cancers. These signs together can be caused by dehydration, allergies, pain, or even behavioral issues, including anxiety , stress, or cognitive dysfunction the dog version of dementia. Dogs that drink a lot of water will often urinate a lot. This is partially due to how the body processes water—such that if the dog is drinking a high volume of water, then a high volume of water is being processed in the kidneys, and a high volume of urine is produced. Dogs may excessively drink water at night for all of the above medical issues, but this can also be caused by: Dehydration Cognitive dysfunction High-sodium treats or food at night Not enough water available during the day, especially if a dog is crated during the day with no water bowl. Dry air—You may notice your dog drinks more at night when the heat goes on in your home. This is due to drying out of the air. Consider using a humidifier where your dog sleeps to help alleviate this behavior. When to Go to the Vet for Excessive Thirst in Dogs It can be difficult to know when to bring your dog to the veterinarian when it comes to excessive thirst. If excessive thirst is paired any of the following symptoms, then is it extremely important to get your pet evaluated as soon as possible: Vomiting. It helps them stay hydrated and healthy. When a Golden Retriever puppy does not drink enough water, they are more prone to developing health complications when they become adults. Too much water, on the other hand, will cause sickness and vomiting. So how much water should a Golden Retriever puppy drink, then? What is the importance of water for a Golden Retriever puppy? Water in general is one of the most basic necessities to make sure that a Golden Retriever puppy does not develop any health complications as they grow up. Water, shelter, food, and proper exercise make up a good lifestyle for your Golden Retriever puppy. If one of those things is out of place, they will most likely have problems with their health. Golden Retrievers make great pets as they are affectionate and loyal to their owner. However, like any other pet, they need to stay hydrated to live longer and avoid illnesses and diseases. This is important to their health and well-being because dehydration can be a very serious problem. Golden Retriever puppies are like other dogs—they need water. But just like humans, Golden Retrievers can have different needs depending on their age and where they live. Water is an essential part of life for any dog, but Golden Retrievers are particularly thirsty because they often need to drink more than other dog breeds. Water is essential to life. Of course, you should choose a quality water bowl not the plastic kind that is both clean and drink-resistant, and that you can clean often. How much water should a Golden Retriever puppy drink? Golden Retriever puppies are born with a high thirst rate. So how much water should a Golden Retriever puppy drink per day? Water is essential for the health of your dog. It is vital that you provide your dog with clean drinking water every day. Many dog owners do not know what the right amount of water to give their four-legged friend is. Golden Retriever puppies are commonly known for their large size and often mistaken as one of the largest dog breeds in the world. However, due to their low activity levels, they are often given less water than some other breeds. The key here is to make sure that your Golden Retriever puppy receives enough water throughout the day. This is a question that is often asked by pet owners, particularly those who live in hot, humid climates. While you may think that water needs are obvious—children require water, sick people need water—there is actually quite a bit of scientific research that can help you decide how much your Golden Retriever should drink. In fact, several factors need to be considered when determining how much water your dog needs each day. Typically, to answer how much water should a Golden Retriever puppy drink, you need to take into account how old your dog is. Younger Golden Retriever puppies need to drink at least two cups of water every four hours. As they grow older, they will need to add one cup of water. How much water should a Golden Retriever adult and senior drink? The amount of water a Golden Retriever should drink each day is an important consideration. Should you give your Golden Retriever around 2 — 3 quarts of water a day? The healthiest dog foods are formulated to meet the nutritional needs of dogs at all stages of development, but it can be difficult to figure out how much water a Golden Retriever requires. The minimum amount of water a dog should drink is 0. Golden Retriever puppies can easily drink up to 30 ounces of water each day. A large dog may need up to 60 ounces per day, while a small dog only needs about 20 ounces per day. Every day, they need 1 quart 3 cups of clean water per dog per day. Golden Retriever puppies should drink about 2. What happens when my Golden Retriever drinks too much water? When a Golden Retriever drinks too much water, his body uses more of the electrolytes sodium and potassium than normal. Too much potassium in the blood can cause a condition called hyperkalemia — which can cause dizziness, confusion and slow reaction times. The American Heart Association recommends that dogs not drink more than 1. A Golden Retriever might need to drink less than that, or might be able to drink more if his body prefers a sodium concentration greater than normal rather than greater than normal. What basically happens to your dog when it drinks too much water is water intoxication. It is caused when your Golden Retriever drinks too much water too fast. Your Golden Retriever may start becoming lethargic. There is also a chance that your dog will collapse. The worst-case conditions of water intoxication is brain damage and heart failure. In other rarer cases, your Golden Retriever may get water intoxication from drinking too much water after playing and exercising during a hot day. What happens when my Golden Retriever does not drink enough water? In these cases, dehydration is more likely to cause the following symptoms: lethargy, confusion, muscle pain, and a dull mind. If your Golden Retriever is underweight and stops eating or drinking then you should see your veterinarian immediately. Dehydration can cause serious problems for your dog such as muscle weakness or even death. Water is a very important component of life for dogs. By keeping her hydrated, you may also reduce the symptoms of a dehydration. How do I help a dehydrated Golden Retriever? Dehydration interrupts the absorption and storage of water in the body causing problems like muscle cramps and brain fog. Below is a list of things you can do to help a dehydrated Golden Retriever. The first thing to know is that Golden Retriever puppies should drinks fresh filtered water every day. If you let your Golden Retriever drink from the tap, you are putting its health in danger. The best way to help your dog is to give it fresh filtered water every day. Also, make sure that you cover its drinking bowl with a dish so that water does not run out before your Golden Retriever starts drinking. Golden Retriever puppies can quickly become ill if their parents are not available to take enough water. To avoid this you should provide your Golden Retriever with regular bowls of water throughout the day. If your dog suffers from chronic thirst, you may want to consider testing a treatment for hydration. The best way to help a dehydrated Golden Retriever is to provide them with cold water to drink. You should make sure that they drink the water that you set for them every ten to fifteen minutes. Ice chips are also okay for them to lick every now and then. This is an electrolyte replacement fluid that you can have your dog ingest. The above methods will help them replenish the water that their body needs. How do I help a Golden Retriever with water intoxication? The treatment for water intoxication is by going to the veterinary clinic. You should immediately go there the moment that you notice the symptoms of water intoxication. That way, their chances of surviving will be pretty high. Otherwise, they will not be able to survive the night. One method of treatment that is very effective is the delivery of electrolytes via an IV intravenous drip. The IV drip will include the electrolytes that your Golden Retriever needs. There are also diuretics and other kinds of drugs. These are not dangerous in any way to your Golden Retriever. In fact, these drugs will be able to help your dog by reducing the amount of brain swelling. It is highly important that you bring your Golden Retriever to the vet the moment that you see that your dog is showing symptoms of water intoxication. It is because there are a lot of Golden Retrievers that were not able to recover from this condition. Once medical treatment commences, their rate of survival will increase significantly. It is needed to survive and to thrive. However, too much water is also bad for your Golden Retriever. So how much water should a Golden Retriever puppy drink, exactly? Again, Golden Retriever puppies should drink about 2. The more they weigh, the more water they will need in their bodies. Did you find this article useful? Their body is becoming low on water and they must drink to make up the losses. When they pant a lot, they lose water through evaporation. This water loss is physiologic and can be readily replenished by drinking. Excess water intake that goes beyond a normal amount, or that occurs without cause, may be a sign of disease. In a variety of conditions the body is not able to control water loss even at normal temperatures. This water loss must be replenished and so dogs drink a lot to find a balance. How much water intake is normal in a healthy dog? Generally, water intake will vary a little with diet. If dogs are fed wet food , they may drink less, while dogs that are fed dry food or salty treats must make up water intake and seem to drink more than expected. However, this water intake is still physiologically normal. In fact, increased intake is often a response to excess fluid loss in urine. If your dog is drinking excessively polydipsia it is possibly because he is losing excess amounts of water for any of a number of reasons. An uncommon cause of dogs drinking more is called psychogenic polydipsia. It is a behavioral condition with a physical manifestation of excess thirst. Primary polydipsia is used to describe excessive water drinking that is not due to illness or psychosis: bored puppies or water loving breeds may tank up on water occasionally or consistently. Sorting these out can be a real challenge for your veterinarian. Some medications , such as cortical steroids often have increased water intake as a side effect. How should increased thirst and drinking be managed? Drinking excessive amounts of water often is associated with increased urination. While drinking a lot of water is a sign of health problems, increased urination can be a real problem for you to live with since affected dogs often urinate inappropriately. The first and most important step in addressing excessive drinking is to diagnose and confirm the underlying condition with your veterinarian. Many of the conditions associated with excess thirst are very serious and must be addressed as soon as possible:. Some dogs are prone to drinking too much, some to drinking too little, and any deviation from their normal drinking habits should be a cause for worry. So how much water does a golden retriever need? It Can Vary According To The Following Factors How much water your Golden retriever needs each day will depend on 6 factors: Their size, their age, their diet, local weather conditions, underlying health issues and activity levels. This comes out to a healthy Golden Retriever drinking something in the region of a quarter to half a gallon of water on an average day, depending on the following: Body size and age It stands to reason that a younger smaller puppy needs less water than an older larger one. So if you feed your golden a wet food, they will drink less than if their diet consisted mostly of dry kibble. This expels water from their system that needs to be replaced. So in hotter weather, their water intake will be considerably more than in the cooler, winter weather. Health issues The amount of water a dog drinks is hugely affected by underlying illness or disease. Some issues, diabetes being one, can cause a dog to drink excessively. While others such as parvovirus can cause a dog to drink much less. Activity levels Any dog that takes part in vigorous and extended exercise will need more water than usual due to sweating and panting to control their internal temperature. So take water with you when exercising your dog. How To Check If Your Golden Retriever Is Dehydrated The easiest method to decide if your dog needs more water is to pinch the skin above their neck, pull it upwards and then let it go. It should very quickly snap back into place with a well hydrated dog, whereas on a dehydrated dog it will tend to fall back slowly, leaving a little tented area of skin for a few seconds. Another way to check is by inspecting your dogs gums. The gums of a healthily hydrated dog are pink and very moist. A dehydrated dog will have gums that are sticky or in very bad cases, dry. Furthermore, if you press your finger into the gum then it will turn white as it pushes the blood out. Upon taking your finger away it should instantly go back to pink. If it stays white for even a couple of seconds, then your dog is dehydrated and you need to get them to drink. Checking For Over-hydration And Water Intoxication Some dogs and especially young puppies are unable to regulate their water intake. The symptoms of water intoxication can include a glazed look, excessive salivation, poor coordination, lethargy and in extreme cases even breathing difficulty, seizures and loss of consciousness. Then quite simply ration the amount of water they are given. Some in the morning, some in the afternoon, some in the evening and extra when hot or exercising. Secondly, you can add flavorings to their water to make it more enticing. Many companies sell special chicken, beef and bone broths you can add to a dogs water. Give them a try! Lastly, you can spend some time on a little positive reward based training. Do this every time you catch them drinking and they should soon form an association between the word and the act of actually doing it. After just a few days of this, use the cue word to get your Golden to the water bowl and ask them to drink. If they do, praise and reward. Praise and reward them if they have. This is all you should have to do. Generally speaking, if you just always leave out a good supply of clean and fresh water, a dog will take care of their water needs themselves. A dog that usually drinks just what they need but suddenly starts to drink way more or way less is usually suffering an illness or disease. You need to spot this and take them to the vet. Aim to give your dog 0. And make sure their water is fresh and clean, regularly changing it 3 times per day and washing out their water bowl daily. Illness The cause could be that it has an illness. This would be more likely if it has started doing it suddenly and if it has been showing other signs of being ill such as throwing up or being fatigued. In this case, the best option would be to take it to a vet. Medication It could also be the case that medication has also been causing it to be thirsty. This would be more likely if it started drinking a lot after starting the medication and if becoming thirstier is a known side-effect. In this case, it would help to talk with your vet about it. This would be more likely if it has also been out in the sun a lot and if it has been panting excessively. If it has also been vomiting then it could actually be the case that it has heatstroke and it would be necessary to take it to a vet. In this case, it would help to give it lots of access to water, shaded areas, a cool room and to walk it in the morning or evening when the sunlight is not as strong. This would be more likely if it gets lots of exercise and if it tends to drink a lot after getting exercise. Golden Retrievers are a breed that is meant to get a lot of exercise daily so this is unlikely to be an issue. The food that it is eating It could be the case that it is always thirsty because of its diet. Dry foods and foods that are high in sodium will tend to make your dog drink more source. This means that it would likely help to reduce how much access your Golden Retriever has to foods that are high in sodium. It would also help to consult with your vet to see whether or not high sodium foods or other aspects of its diet could be the cause. It would also help to make sure that the diet you are giving your Golden Retriever is appropriate. You can look at this page on pets. Things to consider Below are some things you can consider when trying to understand why it has been drinking a lot. If it has suddenly started to drink more than usual If it has not always been drinking so much, it would help to consider what else happened when it first started doing it since it could be the case that there was an event that caused it to start. If your Golden Retriever has always drunk a lot of water then it would be more likely that it is actually drinking a normal amount especially if it is highly active and the vet has not found any issues. Whereas, if it has started drinking a lot suddenly, it would be more likely to be due to things such as illness, hot weather, medication or a change in its diet. It would help to consider what changed at around the same time that it started drinking more. The timing of when it tends to drink more It would also help to consider if there is a certain time that it tends to drink more. Their looks can range from just slightly darker than a regular Pomeranian all the way to just slightly furrier than a regular Pug including all the adorable possibilities in between. They make a great family dog and, for those with no family, a cuddly companion. If these adorable balls of fur intrigue you trust us, if you are a fan of cute, Pom-a-Pugs will intrigue you then read on to learn more. Some versions of this mix come out looking no more different from a Pug, except for being furrier, or a Pomeranian, except for their darker color. However, there are some unique looks among the middle range. On average, a Pom-a-Pug will keep the long, thick fur, small size, and facial construction of their Pomeranian ancestors. These features are mixed with the squished face and darker coloring of their Pug ancestors. Getting down to specifics, the average Pom-a-Pug weighs between five and sixteen pounds and will measure eight to thirteen inches tall. Their coat will be short or medium-length and smooth to semi-course to the touch. However, the Pug side of their ancestry has suffered from health problems, from weight to breathing problems, which can shorten their lifespan. When taking both sides of their health history into account, we can see that the Pom-a-Pug will enjoy a medium-length lifespan at worst and a long one at best. You can expect your mix to live between eight and fifteen years. As mentioned before, their coat can range from short to medium-length and soft to semi-course feel. At the very least, we recommend you give your Pom-a-Pug a thorough brushing once per week. When bathing them, be sure to use shampoo meant especially for dogs free from harsh chemicals. Temperament The temperament of a Pom-a-Pug is perfectly suited to be an affectionate family dog or an energetic and cuddly companion dog. In terms of living space, Pomeranian-Pug Mixes require a medium-sized area to play and run around indoors. This does not mean, though, that they cannot do well in apartments. If they have had their walk appetite quenched, they are more than happy to laze around a small apartment all day. To keep your Pom-a-Pug mentally stimulated, we recommend you engage them in playful activity for at least thirty minutes each day. This can offer some bonding time as well and make your pet even more eager to please you. Health Risks As cute as they are, Pug-Pomeranian mixes are not free from health risks. There are several important health risks to watch out for that are common in this breed. When their leg is fully flexed, the kneecap can become out of place, causing pain and discomfort. Pom-a-Pugs can also suffer from other minor diseases and injuries, but they are not as common as the above ailments. If you suspect your mix has these or any other illnesses or injuries, be sure to consult your veterinarian immediately. Feeding Your Pomeranian-Pug mix will be more than okay eating a bag of dry dog food tailored to small dogs. They will eat a cup of this dry food per day. Be sure to not feed them table food as their digestive system may not handle it. You can break the one cup of dry dog food up into different meals throughout the day, at your discretion. If your pet likes a morning and evening meal, go with two. If they like eating more often, go with breakfast, lunch, and dinner installments. Are Pug Pomeranian Mixes Protective? Despite their small size, some weighing as little as three pounds on the very light side, Pom-a-Pugs can be fairly effective guard dogs. Their alertness can help them warn their owner to anything out of the ordinary far in advance. Do not depend on your Pom-a-Pug to scare off any potential intruders, though. Mix that with strong loyalty to their owner and you will get a protective dog, even if the worse they can do is annoy someone away with their yipping. You want to avoid their fur from getting tangled, especially if they take on the coat of Pomeranians. Keep their eyes and ears clean. For this specific kind of breed, its source should come from allergies. Left untreated, the skin condition worsens to atopic dermatitis and lead to secondary skin infections. Symptoms — the symptoms are easy to identify such as itchiness, flaking, scabs, and hair loss. Prevention — feed them with high quality and balanced diet, and groom them regularly to prevent any buildup of debris and dirt. Eye Infections — Some allergies can cause eye discharge, which is results in mucus-like substances forming around the eye and getting in the eye. If your pup takes on the eye of Pugs, you have to be particularly careful with their eyes, as it often protrudes from its face. Be mindful, however, that they still need to receive their daily nutritional requirements.

Temperament: Loyal, energetic and confident. Rottweiler Lab Mix Appearance Because this is a mixed breed, their physical appearance will vary depending on which parent breed the puppy takes after more. In general Labradors are thinner than Rottweiler, so Rottweiler Lab mixes will fall somewhere in the middle of these two breeds. Both breeds are broad-shouldered with a slight tuck and a large head. The first thing that you should notice with the Rottweiler Lab mix is how athletic they are. They should look muscular and give off a commanding presence. Their body usually resembles a Rottweiler, but their head and longer muzzle has more resemblance to the Labrador. Size The typical size of one of these dogs is anywhere between inches in height, with a weight of around pounds. Remember those pups with more Labrador will be on the smaller side, whilst those with more Rottweiler are on the heavier side. Coat and Colors These dogs come in a handful of darker colors including brown, black, gray or black and tan. A black and tan coat like that of a Rottweiler is the most common. The short to medium length coat of a Rottweiler Lab mix should be smooth to the touch. Because they have a double coat, these dogs shed quite a bit. To keep up with their shedding you should expect to brush your dog every other day or at the very least, weekly to keep the coat healthy. They are one of the largest hybrid dogs around. Despite the short coat these dogs are not hypoallergenic. This is a very adaptable dog and is suitable for most households. Rottweiler Lab Mix Personality and Temperament Rottweilers and Labradors vary quite a bit in their personalities, so it can be difficult to predict exactly how your mix will behave when fully grown. One thing you can know for sure is they love to be with their family. They will follow you all over the house and are happiest when they can be by your side. Because of this they are often prone to separation anxiety, so please be ready to work through this with your new dog. These dogs tend to be very playful and love nothing more than to play a game of fetch or tug with their owner or other dogs. And like working Labs they have boundless amounts of energy meaning that they will play for hours. Rottweiler and Lab mixes are a protective breed but are not typically aggressive — still caution is needed when letting your dog interact with strangers. Proper socialization when they are young can help to curb this but they will most likely never be very welcoming of strangers. Both Rottweilers and Labradors make great family dogs so expect this mix to be no different. They are more than willing to participate in any antics that their kids get up to. Just remember these mixes are protective by nature and will often view other children as a threat to their own kids. Caring for a Rottweiler Lab Mix The Rottweiler Lab mix is a highly active, very strong breed that needs discipline and a strong owner. They require obedience training from day one to make sure that you can keep control of them when they grow bigger and stronger. Other than that they do great in almost any household. They are a very adaptable dog that do not bark much. The biggest issue with this breed is the huge amount of physical exercise they need. Exercise Requirements Both the Labrador and the Rottweiler are high energy and athletic breeds, so your mix will be the same. These dogs like to go and need a lot of daily exercise. At least one hour walk a day with another hour of playtime is the bare minimum required for these dogs. Hiking or even swimming are great ways to tire out your dog physically. So make sure that you have the time to take them for an extra-hard hike at least once a week. You can also do dog sports with your Rottweiler Labrador mix, such as agility and rally. If these dogs do not receive the proper amount of physical stimulation they can become destructive. Number of Walks Per Day: 2. Grooming and Shedding Because of their short coat these dogs do not require regular trips to the groomers or daily brushing. However they do need to be brushed every other day or so. Regular bathing is also not necessary for these dogs. You can give them a bath just when they smell or look like they need it. Too many baths can dry out their fur and cause skin irritation. To remove dead hair and skin you can also use a wet washcloth and wipe it over their body. Feeding and Diet A high protein food specialized for large breed dogs is best for your mix. You should speak with your vet to establish the protein content your pooch needs it differs depending on how active your dog is. Because the Rottweiler Lab mix is prone to bloat it is best to feed this dog in smaller portions throughout the day. Giving them a cup of food three times a day is best. Never leave food out freely for this breed — they are prone to being overweight. Having pet insurance could save you from the headaches of going to the vets with reimbursement for every vet bill from now on! These devoted and docile animals are often seen following their owner and always trying to please their family with a clownish behavior. They might become destructive if you keep them separated for long periods. The Labrotties are not known to welcome strangers or other unfamiliar pets due to their territorial instincts. This makes it necessary to expose them to different people as well as sights and sounds. These pets get along fine with kids if raised with them. Care Exercise Since it has a working heritage, the breed requires a fair amount of regular activity to keep it happy. Even though it remains somewhat inactive indoors, it will appreciate a minute walk or a romp in a fenced yard. It also enjoys one or two sessions of interactive games including retrieving a ball, which it will happily carry in its mouth. Do not over-exercise your pet as its double coat could cause its body to become excessively hot. Grooming When it comes to grooming, your Labrottie needs a weekly brushing using a firm-bristled brush. This will help in not only removing the loose hairs but also distributing the skin oils much more evenly. To keep it looking clean as well as smelling good, you need to bathe your Rottweiler-Labrador mix once or twice every two months. If its nails do not wear down naturally, trim them down once a month. Health Problems Like all big dogs with a deep chest, the Labrotties are susceptible to bloat or torsion. Therefore, do not feed your dog a single large meal, neither encourage it to eat rapidly nor make it exercise vigorously after a meal. Moreover, this breed is sometimes affected by hip and elbow dysplasia, bone cancer, PRA, canine cataracts, and allergies. Training This breed is not suitable for those owners who lack confidence or do not have the time to supervise and train their dogs. Obedience Training: Keep the commands short, one or two words at the most. You may use clicker training that is based on positive reinforcement, consistency, and cooperation to curb its natural aggressive behavior. Socialization: Carefully introduce your Labrottie to other dogs, which will help it to learn to coexist with its new companion. Feeding Apart from feeding your dog on canned food and dry kibble, you could provide it with bones and raw meat. Feed your pet a quality dog food that has at least 30 percent protein, 20 percent crude fat, and less than 4 percent fiber. Rottador Highlights Rottadors are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Rottweiler or Labrador Retriever parents. The main colors of Rottador coats are black, brown, and grey. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. While they are not a good choice of dog for allergy sufferers, their coats are pretty easy to care for. A good brushing per week will probably do the job. When around children, especially young ones, they should be supervised because they are so big and strong. When Rottadors are raised with other dogs and cats, they generally get along well with them. They are highly trainable, and thrive on positive reinforcement. Do not leave them alone for long periods. They can easily become board, depressed, and frustrated, which will result in unwanted behaviors. Rottadors are prone to weight gain, and they have high energy levels. Make sure your dog gets at least one hour-long walk per day. Rottador History The Rottador dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders started intentionally mixing Rottweilers and Labradors in North America, likely in the s. Breeders wanted to mix the two parent breeds to minimize health problems that affect many purebreds as well as create an ultimate family companion and watchdog. They continued to create Rottadors as demand for the mixed breed pups climbed. Even though Rottadors got their start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the dog for you. Check your local shelters, look up Rottador rescues, or check with breed specific Rottweiler and Labrador rescues, as they sometimes help to re-home mixed breeds. However, as a mix between Rottweiler and Labrador parents, you can expect the Rottador to be on the large side. Most weigh in at 70 to pounds and range in height from 24 to 27 inches at the shoulder. That said, many can be smaller or larger. Rottador Personality Rottadors make affectionate family companions and watchdogs. Protective in nature, they will alert when strangers approach. However, once they befriend you, you have a friend for life. These pups hail from a line of two working parents. Their Rottweiler parents regularly work as police or guard dogs or cattle herding, while their Labrador Retriever parents have jobs as hunting or guide dogs. They make excellent family companions. Just make sure you have a lot of time and attention to devote to them. Rottador Health The Rottador mixed breed is predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Rottweiler and Labrador Retriever also face. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Fetch and other adventurous activities are also recommended. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth three times a week minimum, or daily is even better. Crate and kennel training should start in puppyhood. Rottador Feeding An ideal Rottador diet should be formulated for a large breed with high energy. Limit their amount of treats, as well. They usually have medium-to-short, dense coats, and while they are not a good choice of dog for allergy sufferers, their coats are pretty easy to care for. A good brushing per week will probably do the job and bathing is recommended every few months with a mild shampoo. Too much bathing can strip the coat of its natural oils. Their double coats do shed quite a bit. You will definitely want a vacuum on hand. Have you tried robot vacuums? See if the Eufy RoboVac is right for you! Their double coat gives them an edge when it comes to extreme weather. Many of these dogs absolutely love to run and play in the snow. Their double coats also help to keep them cool during hot summer months. Keep in mind they are indoor dogs and need to live indoors. Because of their cattle-driving heritage, they have a tendency to lean and push and can accidentally topple a toddler with a nudge. Always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog should ever be left unsupervised with a child. They may have issues with strange dogs or adult dogs that are introduced into the home, being intolerant of same-sex dogs. With your training and guidance, however, they should accept new animals peaceably. Keep your Rottador on leash in public to prevent aggression or belligerence toward other dogs. Rottador Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Rottadors because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Rottweiler or Labrador Retriever breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. The appearance of this crossbreed dog will depend on the parent mix, but the Labrottie is likely to inherit a solid and sturdy body like the Rottweiler, a broad head like the Labrador and a short to medium length, shiny double coat. A Rottweiler Lab mix is one of the largest hybrid dogs around. It may look like a fearsome large dog but it can be very friendly, loyal, and loving. The Lab Rottie is a very energetic and muscular dog whose exercise needs should not be underestimated by any potential dog owner. Early behavioral and socialization training will help this Rottweiler mix show its affectionate and positive protective nature. A Labrottie puppy is an adorable crossbreed dog. A brief history of this mixed-breed dog A Rottweiler Lab mix is a cross between a purebred Rottweiler dog and a purebred Labrador Retriever dog. When two different dog breeds are deliberately mixed, the crossbreed is known as a designer dog ; this Rottweiler and Labrador hybrid dog is sometimes nicknamed a Rottador. This breed is very confident and determined and is regarded as the No1 guard dog. Rottweiler dogs were as used to herd and guard cattle for Roman soldiers as they traveled around in their quest to conquer Europe; these cattle were the primary food source. Their alertness, discipline, and endurance made them an ideal guard dog. Fact: The Rottweiler is probably the oldest known herding dog breed with its origins traceable back to Roman times. The Rottweiler dog breed is believed to have descended from Roman drover dogs: a mastiff-like dog. Their intelligence, strength, and energy levels meant that these large dogs were used during the World Wars as guard dogs and for messenger or ambulance duties. They are still used today for this type of support and search and rescue activity. So what color is a Rottweiler dog? Parent 2: History of the Labrador Retriever — a purebred dog The Labrador Retriever is the best-loved and most popular dog breed in the world! It has a solid double coat in one of 3 colors; pure black, chocolate brown, or yellow. Whatever the coat color this is just an attractive and loveable dog breed for any level of dog owner or as an adorable and friendly family dog. The Labrador Retriever dog is from Newfoundland, Canada, and was used by fishermen to retrieve their fish from nets and catch any that escaped back into the sea. They are good swimmers and have a gentle mouth grip that will not further destroy any prey they are ordered to retrieve. The Newfoundland and Labrador Province, in Canada, provided this hunting and retrieving dog with its name — the Labrador Retriever or Lab to its friends! The Newfoundland Labrador Retriever dog breed came to Great Britain around , to be used as gun dogs for retrieving waterfowl from land and water, during the shooting season, in Scotland and England. Ongoing breeding is believed to have continued the pure Newfoundland lab bloodline in our Labrador Retriever breed today. The lab is gentle, fun-loving and loyal with an easy-going temperament. A Labrador Puppy, when trained and socialized it can be trusted and protective around anyone. Meet the offspring: The hybrid offspring of these two purebred dogs is the Rottweiler Labrador mix — the Labrottie puppy. Designer dogs gained popularity in the United States during the s and this increased demand and popularity for cross-breeds such as the Labrador Rottweiler mix. The Labrottie puppy is a hybrid dog breed and is therefore not recognized as a breed in its own right, by the American Kennel Club; nor can it be awarded pedigree papers. Any other colors may be due to a gene mutation and are rare. What are the main characteristics of a Labrottie? Any crossbred dog, like the Labrador Rottweiler mix, could inherit the characteristics and the health problems of either parent or from both; or perhaps they could get the best of both and be stronger and inherit fewer health problems than their parent breeds. It can be heavily weighted towards the characteristics of one parent more than the other. With any mixed breed dog, you just have to wait and see how it turns out. Labrottie puppies tend to have more of the classic appearance and sturdy build of the Rottweiler but with the friendlier facial features and floppy ears of a Labrador. This mix is likely to be courageous, confident and smart and also loving and affectionate. They will show devoted loyalty to their dog owner and family. They will be fairly active and enjoy having lots of company. Reputation: Any Rottweiler mix dog could be thought of as a fierce guard dog. The Rottweiler is a confident breed that looks fiercer than its behavior displays. When a Rottweiler is mixed with a Labrador Retriever, the perception changes, as the Labrador is considered a highly friendly, soft-natured, and docile family pet. When mixed the Labrottie will be loving, loyal, and protective of its loved ones, but wary of strangers, with a big bark. This mix is not recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC as it is not a purebred dog, but this will not affect this attractive dog being in demand. Trainability: Any Rottweiler mix puppy needs to be trained and socialized as early as possible. This Rottweiler Labrador mix puppy will be a powerful and muscular large-dog breed that needs to learn control and discipline early. They are intelligent and determined so training should be fairly easy, but this powerful dog is not recommended for an inexperienced dog owner or anyone who cannot provide it with lots of exercise and long walks. Positive reinforcement and reward-based training are recommended for this large dog breed as is very confident, and strong-willed, so it will need to build trust with its owner. Rottweiler mix puppies should be trained slowly and never negatively punished, challenged directly, hit, or locked up for misbehavior. Always reinforce change gradually and praise good behavior and learning. Clicker training would work well with this puppy. This powerful mixed breed dog is no more likely to bite than any other dog breed however with their muscular build they could be very physical in their attempts to play; therefore they should be supervised at all times around young children and smaller animals. The Labweiler is fairly energetic, so a Labrador Rottweiler puppy will need at least one hour of daily exercise and playtime, building up hours a day in adulthood. Power and intelligence: Labrotties are smart, very powerful with a protective nature. They are fast learners but can be stubborn and aloof, so they will need to be trained and handled properly to be able to socialize in public with other dogs and children. They will love to keep active and play games with their family in a way that keeps them challenged; catch the ball or frisbee, puzzles or interactive toys are popular with this breed. Socialization: Early socialization dog training and discipline are strongly recommended for any Rottweiler mix dog. This type of hybrid dog has two highly active parents and one is a powerful guard dog. This mixed breed dog will need to learn to control its strength and have discipline training early to become well—behaved and trusted with other dogs and children. It will thrive in an outdoor environment. Purpose: A Rottweiler Labrador mix will be observant and have herding and retrieving instincts and want to be kept busy. The Labradors have a soft bite that is delicate and careful when retrieving anything and the Rottweiler is determined and forceful. Over time both have used their skills for good activities such as search and rescue, as both can follow orders and commands. A Labrottie can be a disciplined and protective family pet or a good service dog. Behavior: A Rottweiler Lab mix can be strong-willed, occasionally stubborn, and physically powerful, therefore it needs to be trained early as it can become destructive, bark, or chews things if under-stimulated. Physical Characteristics of the Labrottie Size: The Rottweiler Lab mix is considered a large-sized dog breed that has a solid and muscular build, with the build of a fearsome guard dog but the face of a loveable Lab. Weight: You can expect both male and female to reach between 70lblb kg in adulthood. You can expect a Labrottie to live between years, and to spawn a litter size of between pups on average. Temperament: The Rottweiler Lab mix can be strong-willed and stubborn. This Rottador has a very high energy level and can be destructive and bark if not occupied. With careful training and socialization they can be affectionate, pleasant and kind and protective How should you train a Rottweiler Labrador mix dog? The Rottweiler breed has had a reputation for being aggressive and dangerous if not trained properly. The boundaries need to be set early for this mixed breed dog. Fun and positive reinforcement and reward-based training work best. Never hit or raise your voice to this breed during training as it may challenge this Labweiler to rebel and refuse to cooperate. Types of training required: obedience, discipline, agility, and socialization. So, if you are not going to use a professional dog trainer: 1 Develop basic command words: Stop, Sit, Down, etc. This hybrid dog will try to dominate and this must be controlled early in training. This will eventually become its nest and it will sleep there. Eventually, the puppy with your help will learn where and where not to go. They will eventually become creatures of habit and regulate their need and place to use. Health problems and health issues What health problems can a Rottweiler Lab mix suffer from? Hip Dysplasia and elbow dysplasia — common in many large breeds of dog. Hip dysplasia is a malformation of the hip joint, where the ball at the top of the leg does not fit properly into the socket and the ligaments attaching it are weak. This allows excess movement of the fitting which can eventually lead to stiffness and pain for the dog. Early warning signs are visual stiffness then walking, a reluctance to get up when prompted, and a difference in walking style; limp or caution. Bloat — any large dog that eats quickly or drinks a lot before exercising can suffer from bloat. This dangerous excessive gas build-up can cause the stomach to twist and damage other organs. Other health issues include ear infections, bone cancer, heart problems, skin conditions and allergies, epilepsy, and cold tail. How do you care for a Labrottie dog? Exercise needs A Labrottie is outgoing, athletic, and energetic so it will need lots of mixed exercises that blend fun and challenges. They need outdoor space to run around and burn off their excess energy, long walks, and activities that involve exercising around 2 hours a day as an adult. Feeding Feed as a large-sized dog, around 3 cups of Kibble dry formulated food per day. They should be fed twice a day and slowly to prevent bloat. Grooming This mixed breed dog inherits a short to medium length, shiny, dense double coat. Bathing This shortish-haired, water-resistant coated dog does not need regular bathing, only when required. Certain dog formulated shampoos have a double effect of cleaning the coat and protecting it against fleas and insect bites. Cleaning teeth, nails and ears As with all dogs, their teeth need to be cleaned regularly to prevent a build-up of plaque. Chewing breaks down plaque, so use doggie chew-toys, bare-bones and soft toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Nails grow quickly and need trimming regularly, say monthly, and ears need to be checked for debris that could cause infection. Lifestyle This breed is very confident, intelligent, and highly energetic. It will try to be dominant unless controlled and needs to be kept occupied otherwise it can become destructive. They can be stubborn and aggressive until trained. They will chew things if bored or left alone for long periods of time, so keep stimulated and busy. Chew toys can help with boredom. They need your company and outdoor space to run. This breed is a natural watchdog that will act on instinct to be very protective of its family. Positives and Negatives of ownership Positives A Family dog and loyal companion Intelligent and affectionate. A Rottweiler crossed with a Lab is a large dog and will require at least 1, calories a day. The only way to achieve that is to go for recipes developed particularly for giant pups, such as these best large breed dry dog food brands. You may also serve them the overall best dry dog food , but remember to increase the portions. This crossbreed will have an insatiable appetite from their first months, so only give them the absolute best puppy food brands or even the best dry dog food for small dogs. Old goggies will still want to munch a ton, but the food needs to be appropriate for their age. The best senior dry dog food will have adequate ingredients for this age group and it will be softer so they can eat it with ease. This lessens the amount of food they will have per meal and reduces the risk of bloating, something that typically afflicts large breeds. Low-quality meals are also detrimental to their health, so keep your pooch away from the worst dry dog food out there. There are several good dry dog food for large breeds like the Rottweiler Lab cross. It also uses deboned chicken as its primary ingredient and eschews corn, soy or wheat. It reportedly also alleviates allergies and poor digestion. It also has flaxseed, which is abundant in omega-3 fatty acids. Nutra Thrive dog food supplement : Although not food per se, supplements are essential for the necessary intake of vitamins and minerals that your pup may need if they are particularly active or muscular like a Rott Lab mix. It also has glucosamine to improve joint health. You should expect their offspring to inherit that trait as well. A Lab crossed with a Rottweiler needs to be taken on long walks daily, with each trip lasting about 30 to 60 minutes long. The question here is whether you have the energy and stamina to match your dog. Lack of activity and eating too much can cause your dog to put on weight. Being overweight or obese can lead to diabetes and other health problems. A Lab crossed with Rottweiler also needs a lot of attention. It needs company and puzzles and toys that will keep it engaged. Otherwise, it will become bored and develop separation anxiety. These can manifest into some pretty destructive behavior, like incessant barking, chewing, biting, and digging. The right toys can give your dog an outlet for their energy. It also helps sharpen its mind and reflexes. Here are the top toys for a large breed like the Rottodor. This KONG dog toy has been bringing joy to countless dogs for years now. The toy is designed to be filled with treats to keep your pet occupied for hours as it tries to get to the goodies. Nylabone Big Chew: This toy has a distinct shape and is made from extra-strong nylon. A lot of dog owners claim that it takes years for their dog to wear down this toy. Kick Fetch Toy Ball: Another great toy for large and active dogs, the Chuckit allows you to play fetch with your dog. But instead of throwing the ball, you kick it like a soccer ball. The grooves on the ball make it easier for your pet to carry it back to you. Rottweiler Lab Training Training the Rottweiler Lab can be easy, especially if you already have experience with dogs. Having two intelligent parents, Rottador is also smart and quick to learn. Its instinctual need to please its human gives it the motivation to work hard and learn new tricks. Like other breeds, a Rottweiler Lab mix will respond to positive reinforcement better than through punishment or other harsh strategies. However, you should tap the services of an experienced dog trainer to help train your dog. Expose your puppy to other dogs and people by bringing it to a dog park. You might have to keep it on a leash initially until it learns to interact peacefully with others. Even if your Lab Rottweiler mix is socialized, you should not let it play with very young children. Training and socialization will be a lifetime process. Punishment-based training never works. Studies have also shown that using this technique raises less obedient dogs that are more likely to attack strangers and even their owners. Have a lot of visitors over while your dog is still a puppy. Puppies are very confident, so this is the best time to introduce them to new situations. They should not become afraid of other people as fear is what makes dogs attack. Correct nibbling behavior immediately. A quick tap or a spray of a citrusy mix will put a stop to it. Redirect their gnawing tendency towards an appropriate chew toy. This strong dog has an equally strong will and drive. It needs someone who knows how to handle powerful, intelligent canines and who can step up and be firm with it. In short, it needs a no-nonsense Alpha. The Labweiler also needs a family who has an active lifestyle since it needs to be exercised regularly. This dog has boundless energy so it needs a place to romp around. It will not do well in small apartments or with owners that are more inclined towards a sedentary lifestyle. This can lead to very destructive behavior. You could come home to a ruined couch or to complaints of excessive barking. Families with young children should also choose another dog. The Rottweiler Lab mix can be the greatest canine companion for the right person. This lovable giant needs a confident and experienced dog owner who leads an active lifestyle. Do Rottweiler Lab mixes have health concerns? Labrador Retrievers got their start when they were imported from Newfoundland to England in the s. They were hunting and fishing dogs. Rottweilers are of German descent. They have been traditionally used as guarding, herding, and hunting dogs. The Rottweiler Lab mix was perhaps inevitable with two such high demand parents. One of the best things about crossed breeds is the wide range of potential shapes and personalities your dog could grow to have. But this can have its downside as well. In the case of the Labrottie, there are several different possibilities for both appearance and personality. Labradors and Rottweilers are different sizes, and your puppy may fall anywhere between. Rottweilers generally weigh up to pounds, while Labradors are significantly less heavy set at pounds. Rottweiler height can be up to 27 inches at the shoulder, whereas Labs only grow to a maximum of .Both breeds can vary in size within themselves, so it stands to reason that larger Labrador and Rottweiler parents will have a larger Labrottie pup. Most, however, should fall somewhere in the middle. Labrador Rottweiler Mix Coat Rottweilers are well known for their classic black and tan coloring. They have short, low-maintenance coats. Labs come in different colors. Yellow, chocolate, black — they could pass down their coloring to your Labrottie puppy, resulting in a unique coloration. All you can bank on is the range from both parents. Labrador Rottweiler Mix Shedding Labradors have a double coat that protects them from the cold in winter or while swimming in cold water. This is especially true during certain times of the year, as their winter coat starts to come loose. The Labrottie has the benefit of two parent breeds with generally low-maintenance coats. Both Labradors and Rottweilers have short, easily groomed coats. Rottweiler Lab mix pups will definitely have the same length coat. Then they may need a little more. Rottweiler Lab Mix Temperament Labradors have a proud history as faithful retriever dogs, whereas Rottweilers have an equally proud history as guard dogs. Labradors are generally friendly, and are bred specifically for the task of returning hunted game to their owners. A dog bred for this purpose needed to be comfortable around all sorts of people. Rottweilers, in their guarding capacity, have been bred in a way that a fearful and distrusting attitude toward strangers. But how does this combination affect your pup? Labrottie Personality First generation mixes are kind of like rolling a dice. Or you might end up with a protective guard dog that looks exactly like the Labrador. Rottie Lab Mix Aggression As a breed, Rottweilers are responsible for a disproportionate amount of dog attacks. They certainly appear to be among the more aggression-prone breeds. This should be seriously considered by people with kids. Guarding dogs are generally good with their families, but families have friends. Kids bring over other kids, and a family pet needs to be accepting of this. One is by meeting the Rottie parent and making sure they are totally at ease in the presence of you and your family. Socialization is vital for any breed, but especially for a breed like the Rottweiler. Rottweiler Lab Mix Socialization The idea of using traditional training techniques on your Rottweiler mix may be a daunting task for some owners. Fortunately, nowadays we have better and safer methods for training dogs. The first step is always socialization. Introduce your dog to lots of other dogs and people at a very young age to help desensitize them to strangers. You want them to happily accept people coming and going in their home as nothing to be afraid of. Your Rottweiler Lab mix puppy must meet new visitors every day. Make sure a large proportion of them are children. In the wild they would be under the protection of their family, so fear would be unnecessary. Therefore, this is the best time to throw them into all sorts of new situations. Training And Exercising Your Rottweiler Lab Mix Positive training techniques also play a vital role in crafting the obedience and temperament of a dog. For anyone still considering punishment-based training, I would strongly advise against it. Studies have shown that dogs trained in this manner are less obedient, and more likely to attack both their owners and strangers. Rottweiler Lab Puppy Training Like any puppy, your Rottador will require specialized training when they are young, in addition to socialization. Rottweiler Lab Mix Exercise All dogs require a good amount of exercise to keep them in shape. This is especially true with physically capable breeds like the Rottweiler and Lab. Given a good amount of space to run around in, your Labrottie will thrive. Lack of exercise combined with poor diet can unfortunately be deadly. Obesity in dogs, as in humans, leads to diabetes and other complications. Breeding two dogs that are genetically dissimilar results in a phenomena called hybrid vigor, whereby outbreeding undoes a lot of the harm done by inbreeding. These dogs can still carry on genetic diseases from either of their parents given the right circumstances. Labrador Health Both Labradors and Rottweilers suffer regularly from hip dysplasia, meaning their hips are improperly formed. One nasty complication of hip dysplasia is a disease called degenerative joint disorder. One of the more commonly reported concerns in Labradors is exercise induced collapse. This strange condition means that Labradors in the full swing of physical activity may suddenly be unable to hold themselves up. It has actually been linked to a gene, so it is doubtless inherited from dog to dog. Other problems commonly seen in Labradors include elbow dysplasia, PRA, obesity, ear problems, and skin allergies. Hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as PRA, can be tested for. Health testing is an important part of the process of taking care of our pets. Rottweiler Health Elbow dysplasia is also a very common condition in Rottweilers. A study of German Rottweilers found more than half suffered from this ailment. Rottweilers also appear to be susceptible to a few nasty neurological disorders, namely nueroaxonal dystrophy and leukoencephalomalacia. Both of these diseases are degenerative, meaning they gradually get worse and worse. Unfortunately there is no cure or treatment for either, and they sadly can be fatal. For more information on health tests and screens that should be done for Rottweilers, visit the British Veterinary Association and this panel from UC Davis Veterinary Medicine. Although he is potentially less likely to suffer from any of these diseases than a purebred dog, the risk is not removed. Health testing is still a vital part of good breeding practice, even for mixes. Rottweilers have a shorter span of years. Your Rottweiler and Labrador mix could fall anywhere in that range, depending on the health of the dog. What makes a pet good depends on the person, and also the individual pet. Your Lab Rott mix could look like a Labrador, but with the guarding instincts and characteristic wariness of the Rottweiler. Equally, your dog could look much more Rottweiler-ish and have the gentle, easily trainable personality of a Labrador. The likelihood is it will be somewhere in between. Socialization and training go a long way to producing a happy and friendly dog. But genetics play an important role. The Labrador Rottweiler mix is best suited to an active adult home, where the family is around for much of the day and is committed to positive reinforcement training methods. But they will need a lot of work in terms of socialization and training, to make sure you reduce the possibility of bad behavior later on. Both parents should be friendly, healthy and confident. This is by no means a guarantee, but stacks more of the odds in your favor. Please avoid buying from puppy mills or pet stores, as these have no real concern for the health of their animals. Rottweiler Lab puppies are now deliberately bred, but they have existed for quite a while by accident. You need to avoid backyard breeders by only going to someone who has mixed a beloved pet due to their excellent health and wonderful temperament. Good breeders ask lots of questions, and are happy to answer them in return. Both the Lab and Rottie parent of your puppy must have excellent hip and elbow scores. The breeder should provide you proof of this. They must also be clear for PRA and have recent unaffected eye tests from their vet. Rottweiler Lab Mix The 3 most important traits to give your dog are: Exercise: Dogs, like people, need exercise for a balanced state of being. This is especially true for high-energy dog breeds. Training: The time you spend early in training your dog will save much more time and anguish down the road in trying to correct them. Remember the key to effective training—tireless and patient consistency and persistence in insisting upon your dog follow your commands. Socialization — Expose your pooch to different people and environments every opportunity you get. Whether it is taking the trash can out or taking a package to the post office. This last part of the article is split up into five different sections, all of which are very important if you wish to own a Labrador Rottweiler mix. The Training of your Rottweiler Lab Mix The training of your Lab Rottweiler mix puppy is crucial, not because this is their formative years, but because they are part Rottweiler. Rottweilers are an alpha dog breed, and if they sense any weakness from a pack leader. They will push their way into being the leader of the pack, over you and the rest of the family. So train your Lab Rottweiler mix from an early age, the sooner you get the little puppy to realize that you are the pack leader the better life you will have. Bo the Labrottie Image by Jackie Myers Constant training is the key to keeping the Lab Rottweiler mix happy and content in its place throughout its lifespan. In training, always have the puppy complete the instruction no matter how many times it takes. Exercise For The Rottweiler Lab Mix The exercise needs of the Rottweiler Lab are at least 30 to 45 minutes daily, they need regular exercise otherwise, they can become obese and depressed if their exercise needs are not given to them. Other than that they would be happy to join you on the couch until something or someone catches their attention. They do tend to love to play out in the yard with a ball, toy, or rope with you or a family member. If they do not receive their daily needs of exercise they will start to do destructive behavior throughout the house and yard. You will find clothing torn, tables, chairs, trees, shrubs, basically anything they can get their mouths on will be chewed up and pooped out. Until they get the right amount of attention and exercise. Socialization of The Rottweiler Lab Mix All animals, including ourselves, need proper socialization skills to navigate through life, an ill-socialized dog is spelled for disaster. Invite friends and neighbors over to your home regularly to get the puppy used to people coming and going from your home. Take him out with you when you go out for coffee, to the post office, or just anywhere you can bring a dog, such as your local pet store. Socialization teaches your dog that other humans and animals outside of the immediate pack are friendly as well. Zeus the Rottweiler Lab Mix We think and we have good evidence that Zeus and his fellow litter mates suffered abuse because he fears: men plaid shirts Zeus my Labrottie We had several very nice leashes, that I carelessly left lying about, and Zeus discovered them and destroyed them in no time flat. So my dad bought a chain leash, and when it arrived Zeus completely freaked out! Running off and began rolling over when he ran out of space to run away. Another time one cool winter morning I came downstairs wearing a plaid shirt he growled and started barking ferociously at me. Needless to say, it took him a while to calm down. During those few instances, his flight or fight side of the brain took over. But, I consistently reinforced good actions, and he steadily grew accustomed to chains, plaid shirts, and men. Today, in Zeus does not fear men or much of anything actually, and is quite a lovable, very protective, happy go lucky Rottweiler Lab mix. If you wish to read more about Zeus the Rottweiler lab mix , just click the link. Zeus my Labrottie The Health Issues of the Rottweiler Lab Mixed Breed Cold tail — Cold tail happens to sport dogs, they gradually lose the loss of their tail, this is quite painful for it is at the base of the butt. Bloat — Bloat happens when a dog has just eaten and is taken out and is run about for a while. This is a deadly condition if not take to the vet immediately. There the Veterinarians will cut into the stomach and untwist the stomach. Bone cancer — Sadly the Rottie has one of the highest rates of bone cancer. Obesity — The Labrador is prone to overeat and they can become obese. Hip and Elbow dysplasia — Happens to any dog breed that gets overbred without healthy standers. Conclusion of the Lab Rottweilers Mixed Breed. Due to their ability to be a multi-use dog and still be the families friendly pet with proper training at an early age. All in all the Rottweiler Labrador Mix is an awesome dog for anyone experienced with a large dog! All that owner has to do is give the Rottweiler Labrador Mix the proper amount of exercise, socialization, and positive reinforcement training. To make them an outstanding dog! A Labrador Rottweiler mix or any dog without any of these most important qualities, a dog will become unstable and unresponsive to you or anybody else. That any dog should get no matter what is happening, training, socialization, and exercise if you nail down those three qualities in your dog. You most likely will not have any behavior problems because you are keeping your dog mentally balanced, and also actively balanced. But if your dog does start showing a different behavior look back and see if you have slipped up in the three most important things to give your dog over their lifespan! This video is shortly after Zeus the Rottweiler Labrador Retriever arriving at my doorstep, enjoy! For those of you who have or are going to get a new puppy! We have several dog name article just for you. Should a Rottweiler Mix take after their Rottweiler parent, they will be a larger and strong dog breed that has a sweet, lovable personality and a protective instinct. Rotties tend to be calm and aloof. They also love their families and are lovable, playful, and affectionate with them. As long as they have been properly socialized, a Rottweiler will still be alert and protective of their families, but they will also be open and friendly to new people, especially once they have been introduced. The other parent breed will introduce some traits that could affect this in a Rottweiler Mix, so you want to make sure you ask about them. You can also meet the mother dog in-person to see what her temperament is like and the manners she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started training and socialization, it is up to you to continue training and socializing a puppy once you get them home. Rottweilers are moderately adaptable dogs that are better suited to homes with fenced yards. They are more sensitive to heat and do not tolerate extreme temperatures very well. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. The other parent breed could introduce the potential for a Rottweiler Mix to be more or less adaptable. They could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, or they could inherit all of them or any combination of them. From the Rottweiler side, potential health conditions to be aware of in a Rottweiler Mix include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and osteosarcoma. The other parent breed will introduce its own set of conditions and you want to be aware of them. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to ensure they are not passing issues on to puppies. So, you should be asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents anyway. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Although the Rottweiler is a highly trainable dog breed that picks up on things quickly and is eager to please, they can be a challenge for first-time dog owners. They need structure and consistency in training and a confident leader to train them. As such, puppy training classes are recommended. The other parent breed could make a Rottweiler Mix easier or more difficult to train, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. They help reinforce training, strengthen the bond you have with your puppy, and also offer socialization opportunities. A Rottweiler Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. If they inherit the Rottie coat, they will shed a bit year-round and heavier as the seasons change. Due to a lack of good dental care for dogs , gum disease is one of the most common health issues for them. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. A Rottweiler is a working dog breed with moderate exercise requirements. They need a job to do in addition to daily walks, playtime, and some extra activity. If the other parent breed also sits in the moderate range, then you can expect something similar from a Rottweiler Mix. But, if the other parent breed is a high-energy breed, then you will need to be prepared for the possibility of a high-energy dog. Fully-grown Rottweilers usually stand inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. So, make sure you ask the breeder about them. Although it is not a guarantee, you can also meet the mother dog in-person to get an idea of what size to expect in a fully-grown Rottweiler Mix. Rotties generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should still be able to expect a similar life span in a Rottweiler Mix. Featured Rottweiler Mix Article.

labrador puppy for free adoption - Rosie is a staff favorite and and one of the sweetest ladies we've ever had the pleasure of meeting. She had a really rough life before arriving in our care, but she hasn't let that change her gentle spirit. Poor Rosie lived outside on a chain, and experienced severe head trauma at some point that caused fluid to build up in her brain, meaning sometimes she spins in circles, especially when she gets excited. Despite all she's been through, Rosie still loves to spend time with people, play with toys, snuggle, and eat treats! This beautiful lady is just a year old, and the neurologist we spoke to says she has a long life ahead of her! She just needs a yearly neuro check up--and avoid any more knocks to her noggin--so she'd likely do best in a home without stairs or tripping hazards, as well as any other playful pups or kids that could accidentally hurt her. While her foster family is happy to absolutely spoil her for now, this sweet girl deserves a furever home to call her own where she'll be treated with all the gentle, loving kindness she's always deserved. Doodles are her love and she has more than goldendoodles placed in homes throughtout the United States from Sophie's Goldendoodles. In , she began to feel frustrated with the number of Goldendoodle breeders in Idaho that didn't know what they were doing. They would make claims that weren't true and let puppies go to their homes when they were too young, not checked by a vet, or sick. Breeding wasn't restricted to a credible goldendoodle registry. She started researching ways to make the breed better and ran across a miniature Australian Labradoodle at a park in Boise, Idaho. She was thrilled to see the requirements to register the Australian Labradoodle and the gentle nature of the breed. The intent was to create a breed that was allergy and asthma friendly with the temperament of a service dog. The journey was inspired by a vision impaired woman in Hawaii who needed a Guide Dog which wouldn't aggravate her husband's allergies. For years, Cyndi has refused to breed labradoodles because the Lab is a working dog. The distinction is the Australian labradoodle has a service dog temperament which is fantastic for families.
