I began to think about using animals for therapy work around 20 years ago, when I was looking to find a way for my nephew, Cody, to use one of my horses for therapeutic riding. Unfortunately, my plans never came to fruition as we lost Cody before I had a chance to train a horse for him. I looked into requirements for developing my own therapeutic riding program, but there were just too many barriers in the way - it wasn't meant to be. It was so very impractical for the setup of our place, with hills surrounding our home in every direction and no handicap accessible route down the hill to our arena. I was beginning to lose hope, until the day I met my first therapy dog. The dream was brought back to life. I felt this pull, like this was something I could and should do - I could train a dog for therapy work and bring comfort and happiness to others with them. I began what became an extensive search for the perfect dog to make my dream a reality. Over and over, golden retrievers kept popping up as ideal candidates for therapy and service work. Unfortunately, I also read many sad stories of goldens being taken too early due to cancer, which is what brought me to the discovery of the English or European type golden retriever that was thought to have less incidence of cancer I have since seen reports that the research study this was based on may not have been specifically designed to test this theory, so we focus on health and longevity in our lines, not color or country of origin! And I found hope. I found a female puppy in Texas that was just what I was looking for. When she finally arrived, we fell in love with our girl, Hope. She was the perfect addition to our family, and even better than I had ever dreamed to train. She loves to work, loves to learn, loves to please her humans, and she loves every person she meets. I found that only a small number of rescue dogs meet all of the necessary requirements health, training, temperament, etc. Additionally, there are a number of things that a breeder can do to increase the odds of puppies being able to tolerate the stress and intensity of service dog training. These techniques fascinated me! I felt that Hope was a truly great example of the breed, and with her intelligence, drive, and focus on people I knew that her offspring could potentially make wonderful service dogs. While these two breeds are not a contrast in terms of temperament, they are different in various aspects. As with any dog breed, whether you should get a male or female dog depends on a lot of factors. Their playful nature and high agility are great for catching balls and sticks. Because Goldendoodles can have such variations in size, their exercise needs will vary too. For example, a miniature Goldendoodle will require far less yard space and exercise than a larger one. They are obedient and athletic and love learning and responding to commands. Regular eye checks with a vet are recommended, and making sure your Goldendoodles ear canal remains dry will help mitigate any ear issues, especially if they have big, droopy ears. The Goldendoodle is also predisposed to eye issues such as progressive retinal atrophy PRA and cataracts. PRA is an eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Daily Life Now we have covered what the temperament and characteristics of the Goldendoodle are, it is time to take a look at what living with one of these doggies is really like. This includes their food and diet, their exercise needs and their grooming needs. Food And Diet The Goldendoodle is a large dog breed , which means their appetite is quite large too! These pups need around three cups of dry dog food a day, which is around 1, calories. Of course, you should always double check the back of the food packet to see the exact amount you should be feeding your dog based on their weight. The food you feed your Goldendoodle should be high-quality and nutritious. You should try to split their food into at least two meals a day. This will help to prevent gastric torsion bloat in your pup, which is a common health issue in their Golden Retriever parent. This food is specially formulated for bigger breeds of dogs and gives them all the nutrients they need to live a healthy and happy life. Constant-Supervision Training Constant-supervision training means that you never take your eyes off your puppy. You learn how to identify when you puppy needs to go, and at the first signal of circling or sniffing you scoop up your fur kid and take him to his potty spot in the yard. This training method requires a lot of intense observation and is best suited for only the most vigilant of owners. Pros of Constant-Supervision Training Your pup has a lot more freedom, and you are there for his every action.
