Original Labrador Retriever Color Black is the original, archetypal Labrador color, and genetically the most dominant. Chocolate and yellow puppies were frequently euthanized at birth. To understand that we have to look at the genetic difference between black and chocolate Labs. Labrador Retriever Color Genetics Both types get their color from a pigment called eumelanin. Labs with lots of eumelanin pigment in their coat are black. If they have a little less, they appear brown instead. We use letters to tell each place apart — a bit like giving each locus its own zip code! The B locus is home to a pair of genes called B genes. There are two types of B gene your Lab can get in their pair: One we call big B — it contains an instruction to make lots of eumelanin, and causes a black Labrador coat. And one we call little b — it contains an instruction for less eumelanin, and causes a brown or chocolate coat. Big B is a dominant gene, and little b is a recessive gene. Dominant genes to switch off, or override, recessive genes. So dog with BB genes will be black, because he has two genes for a black coat. And a Bb dog will be black too, because the dominant B genethe recessive b gene. Only a dog with a matching pair of bb genes will express the instruction for less eumelanin in their coat, and be brown. Remember that the black dominant gene always switches of the brown gene, so only the dog with two copies of the b gene will actually look brown. But the dominance of the black color enabled our chocolate friends to remain hidden and rare with the breed, for many decades. Generation after generation of black dogs can continue to have only black puppies if dogs with the Bb gene are only ever mated to dogs with BB genes. In fact, it would take two black Labs both carrying the little b gene to produce chocolate puppies. Like this: Statistically, one quarter of their litter would be chocolate colored. And of course, some Labradors are neither black nor brown. The genetic information that creates a yellow coat comes from another pair of genes altogether. These genes are located at the E locus. And — you guessed it — we call them E genes. Just like B genes there are two versions of the E gene, big E and little e. Big E is the dominant gene. It does not interfere with the B genes. Little e is the recessive gene. It has the potential to mask the B genes that would otherwise give us black or brown coats. And the result is a yellow dog. How Yellow Overrides Black and Chocolate Only the little e gene can mask the instructions for black or chocolate fur. There are three possible combinations of E gene that a dog can inherit. It could have two dominant genes EE two masking genes ee or one of each Ee. Only the middle of these three dogs will be yellow. Nine Different Possible Labrador Genotypes! Every Labrador has a combination of B and E genes — called their genotype. There are nine different possible genotypes. Here they are in full: Can you see why each combination of genes turns out the way it does? Because as you can see, the second dog down the list may look black but he could throw brown puppies, and the fourth dog down the list may look black, but he could throw yellow puppies. But two chocolate Labs can produce yellow puppies, if each of the parents carries the little e gene — like this: In the mixed litter, statistically one of half of the puppies will be chocolate and one half yellow. Depending on their genotype, two black Labradors can indeed have yellow or chocolate puppies. Remember from our grid above that there are four different possible genotypes for a black Labrador. The genotype refers to the genetic code that the dog carries. And the four different possible black genotypes down the side to represent the father. Inside the grid are the puppies that could be born from each combination. If and only if, both parents carry a little e gene, then some of the puppies may be yellow. Remember that your puppy needs two little e genes one from each parent in order to be yellow. If only one of two black dogs carries the little e gene, all their puppies will be black. In other words, they both carry a little e and a little b. This is good example of how complicated, and unexpected, Labrador colors can be. The hair coat Labradoodle will shed the most, just like their Labrador parent. During the hot months, they shed heavily, thinning out their dense undercoat. For the rest of the year, they will shed moderately. But, this can be somewhat controlled with regular grooming. Groom them once a week in low shedding periods, and up this to two or three times a week during those hot months. It can also help to groom your hair coat Labradoodle outside, to avoid getting loose hairs in your home! Fleece Coat Labradoodle A fleece coat Labradoodle will usually look like the perfect mix between the Labrador and the Poodle! They will have a wavy coat, or very gentle curls that feel soft to the touch. In fact, many owners describe this hair type as feeling like angora wool. Some fleece Labradoodles may have an undercoat, but the majority will only have one layer. If left to grow long, their coat will develop a shaggy appearance. This type of Labradoodle is the most popular, and the one referred to by the term teddy bear Doodle! But, they can still be moderate shedders at worst. It will vary from one Doodle to another. They will need more grooming than a hair coat Labradoodle, as the waves and curls in their fur will be more prone to tangles and knots. You will need to groom a fleece Doodle a few times each week, if not every day. Their fur will either have very tight ringlet curls, or will be corded, like dreadlocks. Individual strands of fur will feel very coarse to the touch, much like the hair type. But, the wool coat only comes in a single layer. This coat type is extremely low shedding. In fact, no dog breed is completely hypoallergenic! So, a wool or fleece coat Labradoodle could still trigger your allergy symptoms. If you suffer from dog allergies, there are a few precautions you can take. Firstly, spend some time with a Labradoodle before committing. See if you react to their allergens, or if you can tolerate them. All dogs are different! So, one might not trigger you as much as others have in the past. Secondly, maintain a good cleaning regime. Ask another family member to groom your dog for you, and make sure they do so outside. You can take your Labradoodle to a professional groomer, but they will still need brushing in between trips. But, in reality, it is very hard to do, especially if your puppy is a first generation mix i. This is because the puppy can inherit any mix of traits from their parents, and Poodles have very different fur to Labradors. If your Labradoodle puppy is a second or third generation, or if they have been backcrossed to a Poodle, their adult coat may be slightly easier to predict. There are plenty of tips available from breeders when trying to determine the adult coat of your Labradoodle puppy. The curlier this fur is, the more Poodle-like they suggest the adult coat will be. Others may state that you can make the same assumptions by looking at the whole coat — the wavier this is, the curlier the adult coat will be. But, you must remember that your puppy will shed this coat to allow their adult fur to grow in. And all Labradoodle puppies can look very similar in those early months, as puppy coats are very different to the three potential adult coats. The best way to predict what coat your Labradoodle puppy may grow up to have is to observe the parent dogs. Since he is the smallest member of the team, he sometimes ends up in wacky costumes in order to complete missions, including a cat, possum, rabbit, and flower. Squirt also had a friend named Peewee which he thought was eaten by an alligator. He gets adopted by accident in Season 2. Rebound voiced by Brooke Goldner — Niblet's little sister. True to her namesake, she was adopted and returned to the pound many times due to her overenthusiastic nature. She finally finds her forever home with Agatha McLeish. Cupcake voiced by Cree Summer — A puppy who is Cookie's adopted daughter. She is a member of the Super Secret Pup Club. She is smart and quick-thinking, although sometimes her puppy energy gets her into sticky situations. Arnold Fist — Snobby and haughty son of the Mayor who once works as a garbageman. He is next in becoming pound supervisor after Bigelow gets fired. Later, his dream is dashed to bits when Bigalow is hired once again after Flack and Tubbs are arrested. Arnold appears in the Pound Puppies TV special. Voiced by Ed Begley, Jr. Mother Superior — A kind-hearted nun who runs the St. Francis Children's Home. In one case, she helps Cooler escape solitary confinement when Cooler played his sick act and Dr. After Nabbit and Bigalow leave, Dr. Weston awards Cooler with a cheese-flavored dog bone. She is later remade as an African American veterinarian named Dr. Sam Quintin — A jewelry thief hired by Katrina in her plot to close Holly's puppy pound. He fools Holly and the Pound Puppies into thinking that he is a movie director and tricks Bright eyes into stealing the jewels. He is also known as "Quick Fingers" Quintin. After Holly and the Pound Puppies learn about Sam's true intentions, he is arrested by the police. He appears in Bright Eyes, Come Home. Voiced by Barry Dennen. She wishes for a puppy of her own. Voiced by Russi Taylor. Shannon — A curly-haired girl who wants to adopt Bessie. However, Katrina stops her and her parents before they decide to adopt Bessie by telling them that the dogs aren't for sale. Jerry — A blond haired boy who appears in Kid in a Doghouse. His hobbies are reading comic books and skateboarding. When he requests to the Pound Puppies that he should be "adopted" with his new dog Blue, the Pound Puppies find it unorthodox, but agree anyway. When they learn that Jerry is too lazy to do chores and he runs away from home, the Pound Puppies use reverse psychology in order to get Jerry to do chores. Afterwards, Jerry promises to do his chores including taking care of Blue and is reunited with his parents. Lisa — An African American girl whose family is moving to another town. When Nose Marie runs away from the Pound, Lisa adopts her. Then, just before the plane takes off, the Pound Puppies stop Nose Marie and tell her that they need her very much. Lisa instead adopts Freddie and moves away. Lisa appears in Nose Marie Day. Voiced by Deonca Brown. He has a wife and a bespectacled daughter named Sarah, who loves puppies. At first, Chief Williams does not want Sarah to have a puppy because he thinks they eat too much. However, when a life-time supply of dog food is shipped along with a puppy delivered to Sarah, Chief Williams changed his mind. Chief Williams often wondered about Mayor Fist's strange behavior when he is called in the middle of the night about a high-speed chase involving Bigelow. Black — Katrina's doctor who sends her on a vacation after she has a meltdown caused by the puppies. He appears in Secret Agent Pup. Voiced by Arthur Burghardt. Slaughtar — An evil caveman who rules a tribe of barbarians aiming to get rid of puppies, who once rules the Earth. He is Captain Slaughter's ancestor. The members of his villainous tribe include the ancestors of Katrina Stoneheart, Brattina, and Catgut. Greg — A short, brown-haired boy who is depressed because his friend moves away. He adopts Pal so he will not be lonely anymore. He appears in Tail of the Pup. Voiced by Katie Leigh. Edgar and Chauncey — Two police officers who chase Katrina's car. At the end of The Rescue Pups, thinking that the driver is Katrina Stoneheart, they are last seen giving Katrina speeding tickets. They are voiced by Sorrell Booke uncredited and Ernie Hudson respectively. Jody's mother disapproves the adoption because having a puppy will be too much noise. So, Jody runs away. However, on her way to the Puppy Pound, Jody falls into a hole and calls for help. Jody is voiced by Kristina Chan and her mother is voiced by Susan Rhee. Charlie — A young, red-haired boy who adopts Tiny in Happy Howlidays. Despite the fact that Tiny has a limp, Charlie still loves him anyway. He is voiced by Patric Zimmerman and his mother is voiced by Ruth Buzzi. According to Katrina, the Belveshires are the third richest couple in the country. Lord Belveshire usually speaks gibberish, so his wife, Lady Belveshire, is like his interpreter, translating what her husband is trying to say. They have a bespectacled son named Hubert, who usually reads his book. They invite Holly and the Pound Puppies along with Buster to their house so they can help them keep the pound open. When the library is destroyed by Catgut and his friends, they accuse the Pound Puppies of wrecking it. Later, they find out that it is Catgut and his friends who did it caught on camera and tell Katrina that her plans of making a condominium on top of Holly's property has been denied.
