For other areas, this only requires a fan. Some healthy bulldogs may be able to play at the beach without overheating, others may not. You should evaluate your own dog and have a feel for what they are comfortable in, and can tolerate. Hawaii rabies laws prevent shipping bulldog puppies into the State until a certain age. It is difficult to ship a bulldog into Hawaii this applies for all dogs because Hawaii is rabies free and has certain restrictions for bringing animals into the State. There is a process where it is possible, but it requires the dog going through a specific procedure that takes months and can be costly. The other options are to either ship the dog from a rabies-free country OR quarantining it in Hawaii for a long period of time very costly. First of all, all of the options require putting the dog on an airplane for a long period of time, which is very risky discussed in 3. This should be avoided at all times if at all possible and is one reason we do not support buying bulldogs from outside of Hawaii. We do know of several people that were successful doing this but also know of other people that were not. It is a real risk for the dog. If you are in a situation where you have to fly your dog then we suggest doing extensive research to first try to find a way to fly your dog in the passenger cabin with you not sure any airlines do this anymore. If you are flying inter-island which is obviously not as much as a risk, but still a risk, especially if the dog has to fly in baggage because they are larger , then we recommend Hawaiian airlines. Bulldogs are more expensive in Hawaii. Isn't everything though? Given the cost and risk of shipping one from outside of Hawaii, this does even out. Why are they more expensive? First of all, vet care is more expensive in Hawaii thus raising the costs of breeding. Secondly, it is rare to find a good quality stud dog in Hawaii especially a champion so a conscientious breeder that cares about quality will most likely be shipping semen in from the mainland. The semen shipping costs alone can double the price of stud services. This raises the cost of the bulldog. Additionally, shipping in semen means either surgically implanting or artificially inseminating cooled or frozen semen for the breeding. This is an expensive vet bill compared to if the stud were in Hawaii. Good breeders take this all into consideration and obviously will be paying more for the breeding because they care about the quality of the puppies. But it also will mean the ending price of the puppy will be higher. Lastly, general care for the bitch and puppies is higher in Hawaii due to the general higher cost of living here basic supplies like electricity to wash blankets, food for the puppies, bottles, cleaning supplies, etc. These costs DO add up over the duration of the breeding. The price depends on many factors and can be lower or higher than this average. A reputable breeder should be able to explain why their puppies are higher or lower priced. I recommend introducing the dog to the stacking box as soon as you start your stack training as this will help you move quickly through your free stack and hand stack training, as well as for teaching the dog to stay and allow you to get some distance from your dog. I do not recommend putting a dog on a stacking box on a grooming table and noose forcing him to stand for long periods of time. Stacking box training should be fun. Tools needed for this were a saw, a drill, a staple gun, and scissors. Supplies are wood I had cheap 1x4s that were for a different project that ended up changing plans , screws long enough to attach your wood together, a piece of a yoga mat, and some staples long enough to attach the yoga matting to the wood. How much wood or yoga mat you need depends entirely on the size of your dog. You want the box to be longer than your dog, and somewhat wider than their stance. I just held my wood up to Ptera and guessed. If you don't own a saw with which to cut the wood, get your measurements before heading to the hardware store, and ask them to cut the appropriate lengths. Generally, they won't do cuts with less than 12 inches on either side, and sometimes they will charge for more than cuts, depending on where you go. You want two long pieces, and four short pieces. Drill, saw, cut boards, and screws You start off by making a box out of the two long pieces and two of the short pieces. I didn't predrill any holes, and did end up with a little bit of splitting on my wood. You can predrill or not. Either way, I highly recommend starting the screws in the short end piece first, before attempting to attach them to the long pieces. It makes the entire process much easier. Attaching the short piece with screws already started to the long pieces to form a box Once you have a box made of two short pieces screwed to the ends of the two long pieces, it is time to place the other two short pieces. These are the parts your dog's feet will be on. The first piece can be attached to the front of the box. Short piece for front feet is attached to the box Once the board for the front feet is in place, carefully decide exactly where you want your dog's back feet to be. I put Ptera up on the table and had her measure which holding the loose board so it didn't slip , but you can also measure with your dog standing in a proper stance especially if you have assistance so someone can measure while you hold the dog in place. Getting the right placement for the back foot board Once you have the correct placement for the back foot board, go ahead and screw that one on as well. At this point, I also lightly sanded down a few splintery areas from cutting and where the board had split while drilling. This is also the point where you would add stain or paint, if desired. I left mine raw, for now. All screwed together Next, cut some matting I used a small piece off the end of a yoga mat just wide enough for your dog's feet when in a proper stance. Attach the matting using a staple gun you could also glue this, probably, but I am too impatient to wait for glue to dry. Make sure to put the matting exactly where you want your dog to put their feet. The boards are to give your dog a rough idea of where their feet go, the matting is exactly the correct place. Having a different texture so your dog can tell when they get it right is a good idea here, and the yoga matting also helps keep them from slipping. Schutzhund work concentrates on three parts. The Schutzhund standards for the third part, protection work, are similar to those for dogs in police work. While dogs of other breeds are also actively involved in the sport of Schutzhund and often follow similar criteria for breeding purposes, this breed evaluation test was developed specifically for the German Shepherd Dog. It is a sport enjoyed by persons of varied professions, who join together in a camaraderie born of their common interest in working with their dogs. Persons of all ages and conditions of life even those with significant disabilities enjoy Schutzhund as a sport. Often, it is a family sport. When approached closely on a loose leash, the dog should not act shyly or aggressively. The track is laid earlier by a person walking normally on a natural surface such as dirt or grass. The track includes a number of turns and a number of small, man made objects left by this person on the track itself. At the end of a 33 foot leash, the handler follows the dog, which is expected to scent the track and indicate the location of the objects, usually by lying down with it between its front paws. Obedience The obedience phase includes a series of heeling exercises, some of which are closely in and around a group of people. During the heeling, there is a gun shot test to assure that the dog does not openly react to such sharp noises. There is also a series of field exercises in which the dog is commanded to sit, lie down, and stand while the handler continues to move. From these various positions, the dog is recalled to the handler. With dumbbells of various weights, the dog is required to retrieve on a flat surface, over a one-meter hurdle, and over a six-foot slanted wall. The dog is also asked to run in a straight direction from its handler on command and lie down on a second command. Finally, each dog is expected to stay in a lying down position away from its handler, despite distractions, at the other end of the obedience field, while another dog completes the above exercises. The exercises include a search of hiding places, finding a hidden person acting as a decoy , and guarding that decoy while the handler approaches. The dog is expected to pursue the decoy when an escape is attempted and to hold the grip firmly. When the decoy attempts to attack the handler, the dog is expected to stop the attack with a firm grip and no hesitation. The dog is sent after the decoy who is threatening the dog with a stick and charging at the handler. The protection tests are intended to assure that the dog possesses the proper temperament for breeding. Schutzhund 1 SchH1 For SchH1 the dog must be at least 18 months old and pass an initial temperament test by the judge. The dog must heel off leash, demonstrate the walking sit, the walking down, and the long down under distraction, as well as the send-out. It must retrieve on the flat and over a hurdle, and over the scaling wall. In tracking, it must be able to follow a track laid by its handler at least 20 minutes earlier. There are also protection tests. It must again pass all of the obedience and protection tests required for the SchH1 degree, but those tests, for SchH2, are made more difficult and require greater endurance, agility, and, above all, control. There is an additional walking stand exercise required. In tracking, the SchH2 candidate must be able to follow a track laid by a stranger at least 30 minutes earlier. Again, the tests now are made far more difficult. All exercises in obedience and protection are demonstrated off leash. The Walking stand is replaced by the running stand. In tracking, the dog must follow a track that was laid by a stranger at least 60 minutes earlier. The track has four turns, compared with two turns for SchH1 and 2, and there are three objects, rather than two, that must be found by the dog.
