Remember that you will be brushing your Bernedoodle daily, so it is essential that the brush is both solid and ergonomic for comfort. If you have done a good job with the brush, you should easily get through their fur. If not, use the comb or brush to get rid of any mats you find. Slicker Brushes Typically rectangular in shape to cover a larger surface area and with hundreds of densely packed pins, these brushes are popular among owners of fleece or wool coat breeds. This is because they are pretty great at removing mats and tangles, as well as dead hair and dander. A word of caution: you need to be careful when using slickers as too much pressure could cause discomfort. They are often surprised however when I inform them that Bosun has not had his tail docked. Working dogs include any dog used in law enforcement or Armed Forces, emergency rescue, and lawful pest control and shooting of animals. In Scotland, an outright ban save for medical treatment was introduced under the Animal Health and Welfare Scotland Act in , later amended in to provide exemptions specifically for working gun dogs and hunt, point, retrieve breeds such as Spaniels and Pointers. Only up to a third of the tail may be amputated. The rules on showing dogs with docked tails also varies between the devolved nations. It is a contentious issue, but exemptions have been made to working dog breeds because of strong supporting arguments that they are at greater risk of painful tail injuries often leading to medical intervention in adult life. The docking or partial amputation is therefore carried out as a preventative measure. Anyone who has seen the frantically excited wag of a Springer Spaniel tail can see how injuries could happen. The pedigree is stripped,quite correctly, so one cannot show with the bloodline that has been adulterated by people who wish to prosper at the expense of our beloved Boxer. If anyone is thinking of purchasing a Boxer it would be wise to avoid the dog that has been tinkered with and go for a verified Boxer. Why should anyone that seek the truth go to the French Kennel Club? What truth's do they have? I suggest anyone that wants the truth go to Dr Cattanach himself. Why would a foreign kennel club have all the data? As our KC registrations are not automatically registered with every worldwide Kennel Club. In actual fact your statement that one cannot show the bloodline is incorrect. The ONLY disqualification is that of the natural stumpy tail. So you can have a fully tailed one with exactly the same percentage of Corgi that can be shown under FCI rules. Dr Cattanach did not create the bobtail Boxer to prosper. It's not exclusive to the bobtail Boxer. But perhaps this is why breeders should be endorsing puppies prior to sale but the commercial element don't care they will just register them with the 'alternative registries' out there. After all most people that want a puppy do so because they want a pet they don't want to show it.They only care that they want a puppy that looks a certain way or is a certain colour or has certain markings. That's the supply and demand ethos of ANY commodity regardless if it's a living being or an inanimate object. But it's not the norm. When you bring a new puppy home, it's important to keep feeding it the same food that it has been eating at its previous home. Your puppy will have had his first shots at five or six weeks before you got to take him home, and he will need a few further shots over a period of up to 18 weeks. They are voracious eaters and will eat just because they can, not because they need it. Excess weight can lead to all sorts of issues including arthritis and heart problems. To prevent this, control their diet and give them plenty of exercise for them to burn off those calories. They really do need very little exercise of just a few short minutes a couple of times per day. Too much exercise for a puppy can cause skeletal formation issues and plays a large part in joint problems. Take it easy until your puppy is at least a year old. Bedding and Shelter A Labrador should always have a soft surface to lay upon. To prevent this you should get your Lab a large sized dog bed or line a crate to offer a soft and comfortable place to rest. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Labrador is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions against common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Genetic Predispositions for Labrador Retrievers Bloat Gastric dilatation volvulus, also known as GDV or bloat, usually occurs in dogs with deep, narrow chests. This means your Labrador is more at risk than other breeds. When a dog bloats, the stomach twists on itself and fills with gas. The twisting cuts off the blood supply to the stomach and sometimes to the spleen. Left untreated, the disease is quickly fatal, sometimes in as little as half an hour. Your dog may retch or heave but little or nothing comes up , act restless, have an enlarged abdomen, or lie in a prayer position front feet down, rear end up. Preventive surgery in which the stomach is tacked down or sutured in place so that it is unlikely to twist is an option. If you see symptoms, take your pet to an emergency hospital immediately! Some of the blood supply that should go to the liver goes around it instead, depriving the liver of the blood flow it needs to grow and function properly. If your friend has PSS, his liver cannot remove toxins from his bloodstream effectively. Surgery may be needed, but in some cases, we can treat with a special diet and medication. Your Labrador Retriever is prone to a chronic liver disease called hepatitis that may develop around middle age. Hepatitis is usually diagnosed through blood testing or liver biopsy, and can be treated with medication and special diets. Signs of liver disease do not usually occur until most of the liver is already damaged or destroyed, so early detection and intervention through routine blood screening is essential for early treatment. Bleeding Disorders Your Labrador Retriever is prone to a bleeding disorder called hemophilia. This is an important test as we may not otherwise know whether your pet has hemophilia until severe bleeding occurs during surgery or after a serious injury. If the immune system destroys red blood cells, your dog quickly becomes anemic, weak, and lethargic. His gums will look whitish or yellow instead of a normal bright pink color. Sometimes an emergency transfusion of red blood cells or platelets is needed. Bone and Joint Problems A number of different musculoskeletal problems have been reported in Labrador Retrievers. While it may seem overwhelming, each condition can be diagnosed and treated to prevent undue pain and suffering. Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis.
