Backyard Breeders Rescue Shelters Professional Breeders If you will spend money, I highly advise buying from professional breeders among these options. These people take good care of the dogs and prevent inbreeding to guarantee minimal health problems. Reliable breeders can provide you with results of genetic testing for the parent dogs and offspring, as well as records of vaccination and other pertinent documents. They also provide health clearances for the parent dogs. However, it is remarkable that the mixed breed of Golden Retriever and Husky do not shed much, and it is considered part of the low shedders. Aside from the aesthetic purpose of grooming, there are a lot more reasons to accomplish this activity. Developing a more intimate relationship Maintaining the cleanliness and physical health Bringing out the natural oil on the coat Avoid issues like bug infestations Checking anomalies and possible health problems Here is a list of the tools and equipment you will need for grooming this pup: Slicker Brush Cotton Ball Nail Clipper A regular grooming routine is essential in keeping the shiny and healthy coat of your Husky Golden Retriever Mix puppy. A fundamental step in the grooming routine is regular brushing using a slicker brush. Other steps include giving a bath, trimming the nails, and cleaning its ears. The use of a slicker brush over a pin brush is advisable due to its purpose of untangling mats or knots in the fur. Also, it helps in removing debris and loose hair. It can run through the thick layers of the double coat and facilitate effective grooming. Another advantage of this brush is its massaging quality since it has long pins. Massaging the skin of your pup will stimulate the production of essential oils for moisturizing the coat. Also, this will increase the blood circulation and promote health for the dog. This activity should be done at least once a week to decrease the amount of shedding and avoid matting of fur. In brushing the whole coat, you need to brush places of matting and thicker fur more diligently. If your dog has a collar, remove it when brushing the coat, and do not leave out the neck area unkempt. Cutting matted fur should only be done when you cannot brush out the mat. The next step is bathing your pup, especially when it is smelly and dirty. Some people proceed to trim the coat of the puppy before bathing it. It is your discretion if you will follow the steps to the dot. After lathering with shampoo and then rinsing the coat, you can opt to blow-dry the coat. The frequency of bathing will also depend on your decision, based on the smell and sanitary condition of the Golden Retriever Crossed with Husky puppy. After the bath, you will proceed to brush the coat again. Then, you will initiate the trimming process. In trimming, you should avoid trimming the entire coat. The double coat of your puppy functions as an insulation against the fluctuating weather. It also traps warm air on a cold day and cool air on a hot day. Usually, groomers use clippers for this process. However, you may opt to use thinning shears for cutting parts of the coat. You need to trim the fuzzy hair growth around the edges cleanly. You will trim the fur between the toes next. For cracked dog pads, you can apply Vaseline as a regimen. In trimming the legs, you will cut the unkempt fur to achieve symmetry and balance. The fur on the front of the legs is shorter than that on the back. The hair on the back of the legs should flare out slightly behind the dog. Similar with the legs, trimming the chest and neck should aim to remove the unkempt fur. It should be noted that you will move the thinning shears with the direction of hair growth. After the neck and chest areas, you will trim the fur around the ears. This step will help fend off parasites. Lastly, you will trim the tail. For this step, you will trim the length by tapering the tail, starting from the base to the tip. Part of the grooming process is checking for wax buildup in the ears and signs of an ear infection. You can clean their ears with a cotton ball and a dog-specific ear solution. You should never use a cotton swab for their ears. You can also use a cotton ball with mineral oil or microfiber cloth with mineral oil to remove debris from the eyes. The frequency of this activity depends on the rate of its toenail growth. Long names may break, and cause irregular gait and infection. If you do not have this much time in your hands, you should schedule appointments with trustworthy groomers around your neighborhood. Husky Mixed with Golden Retriever Puppies Health Problems Most of the Husky mixed with Golden Retriever dogs are free of fatal and congenital diseases, primarily because of their enlarged gene pool. Their average life span is 10 to 13 years. One condition you need to prevent is heat stroke. Since this breed has a dense and double coat, they do not tolerate heat as much as they tolerate cold weather. You should protect your puppy from overexposure to the sun and keep it well hydrated. Even if there is a reduced risk for the usual health conditions from the parent breeds, it is important to know the possible diseases your puppy may acquire, especially when it gets older. One these health problems is a cataract, an opacity of the eye lens. When your dog acquires this disease, its eyes will appear cloudy. One of the possible health problems is hip or elbow dysplasia. This is an inheritable disease wherein the thighbone does not attach properly with the hip joint. Elbow dysplasia involves joint laxity due to different growth rates of the bones of the elbow. Vaccinations are weapons against fatal diseases. There is a generally accepted guideline of puppy vaccination. Some of the recommended vaccinations are measles, rabies, and DHPP which is the combination of vaccines for distemper, adenovirus, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. By knowing the possible serious health issues of this mixed pup, you can be more watchful when your pup manifests some warning signs related to these possible conditions. This classification means that you should provide them with lots of mental and physical stimulation. The duration of physical activity would be enough to maintain its weight and protect them from lifestyle diseases. I recommend walking, running, playing with Frisbee or tennis ball for your Golden Retriever Crossed with Husky puppy. If the Golden Retriever Husky mix puppy does not get enough physical and mental stimulation, it may exhibit behavioral problems. These problems include inappropriate barking, chewing, and causing property destruction. This breed is intelligent and fast learners. However, their independent side may antagonize your directions if training started late. An effective way to facilitate the training is by initially having short training sessions. To avoid possible destructive behavior that can be traced to their Husky origin, you should employ obedience training and leash training. You need to assert yourself as the leader by having consistency and clarity. A reliable way to do this task is making the puppy wait for its food. This act will establish your role as the provider and keeper of all the resources, such as the treats, food, toys, and other assets. During training, it is possible to encounter mischief and fluctuations in concentration. A way to prevent this situation is keeping the sessions short. However, you should be cautious and never leave your child and the dog alone. This action could aggravate and provoke the pet. Aside from the appropriate training for the dog, you should teach your child to avoid disturbing or playing with the pup when it is eating or sleeping. Golden Retriever mixed with Husky pups are affectionate to families. They have an innate loyal character, and they enjoy being around people. This trait is probably attributable to its Golden Retriever parent. Red Golden Retriever And Husky Mix Temperament Predicting the temperament of any mixed-breed dog is tricky, and there is no certain way to know if your Goberian dog will take more after his Husky parent or vice versa. To get a better sense of your new Golden Retriever Husky mix, try to meet both of his parents and get a sense of their temperaments. Friendly The Husky and Golden Retriever mix is going to be a very friendly and people-oriented pooch. Like both of its parenting breeds, the Goberian likes to spend time and interact with people and is especially gentle towards children. Goberians form strong bonds with their humans and will love to spend time and cuddle with all family members. However, they tend to pick a special person, someone whom they favor more than anyone else and that person will have a special place in their hearts. Highly Energetic The Husky Golden Retriever mix is a very energetic and active dog that requires prolonged exercise sessions to stay happy and well-behaved. If not properly exercised, Goberians can easily get bored and will resort to destructive chewing, howling, barking, and full-blown mayhem! Goberians need up to 90 minutes of exercise every day, and enjoy swimming, running, hiking, or any other activity that gets the heart rate going. Independent Depending on how much it takes after its Husky parent, your crossbreed can be very independent and stubborn at times. Intelligent Both Huskies and Golden Retrievers are smart breeds, so your mix will be too. The greatest thing with owning an intelligent dog is that they are easy to train when properly motivated. Start training your puppy as soon as you bring it home and only use positive reinforcement. Using treats , play, toys, or cuddles as rewards can motivate your pooch to stay focused on training even if he is stubborn and this will make the whole process a lot easier for you. Goberians that take more after their Husky parent have a stronger wanderlust potential so it is wise to keep your pooch on a leash and have a fully fenced yard. Otherwise, be prepared to run miles to catch and bring your dog back home from exploratory adventures. While Goberians are generally healthy, they are prone to certain diseases that affect Huskies and Golden Retrievers. The most common problems seen it this mix are: Hip dysplasia.

They can also pierce the wall of the intestine causing Peritonitis. Parts of the bone can also make there way all the way down the GI tract to the large colon. They can collect there, causing constipation and severe discomfort. The resulting trauma can cause bleeding in the rectal area. The vet may have to use an enema or manipulate the bowel to remove the fragments. Bone stuck in the stomach If a piece of bone is too large, it may be unable to make its way out of the stomach. This can result in abdominal surgery or an endoscopy to remove the bone fragment. This can cause an infection referred to as Peritonitis which can be fatal. Cracked Teeth Dogs can crack their teeth chewing on a hard bone such as a store bought cooked bone. This can lead to costly dental bills from the resulting extraction or even possible root canal needed to fix the tooth. Not to mention the pain it will cause your dog. Here are some of the benefits that your dog will get from a raw bone. Clean Teeth A raw bone is a great substitute for brushing your pooches toothy trains. Chewing on the bone helps stimulate the saliva enzymes and helps get rid of any food trapped in your dogs teeth. It also prevents the build up of tarter and keeps the teeth healthy and clean. This will help to avoid any trips to the vet for extractions or scaling of the teeth. Ten to twenty minutes of chewing after a meal should do the trick. Helps dog avoid bad chewing habits A nice raw bone can be a great way to distract your dog from any bad or unwanted chewing habits. Some dogs have a habit of chewing on clothing, furniture, socks. A bone will keep there attention and hopefully prevent them from any negative chewing habits. They contain calcium phosphate which can be up to four times easier for your dog to digest verses other common calcium supplements. Raw bones are excellent for larger breed dogs such as the German Shepherd. Because of their quick growth, they need the extra calcium for their large skeletal system. The best types of raw bones to give your dog: Frozen raw bones Freezing bones before giving them to your dog is a great way to slow down their chewing and digestion. Large raw bones The size of the bone will depend on the size of the dog but in general you want to give your dog large raw bones that are bigger than their head and a greater length than their muzzle. A German Shepherd for example, will require something large such as a lamb breast or a turkey neck. Meaty raw bones Raw bones with plenty of meat on them are the best for your dog. You want to have a good balance of meat to bone. Excess bone without the meat can cause constipation. If the bone is a little bare, some additional meat on the side will help even things out. Bones to avoid giving your dog: Antlers Avoid any types of antlers. They are too hard for your dog and can wreak havoc on their teeth causing injuries. Bones that are cut up into small pieces This would include knuckle bones and ox-tail bones that have been cut. Cooked bones Cooked bones that you buy from the store are the worst choice. The softness of these bones can lead to splintering which can cause injuries. Rawhide Bones Stay away from these bones as they are a choking risk. The rawhide can get soft after your dog chews on it for awhile. Because of this, your dog can easily tear off big chunks which can be swallowed if unsupervised. Small bones Smaller bones are a choking hazard. Stay away from chicken, pork or rib bones which are common but unfortunately dangerous. They are more prone to splinter causing damage to your dogs mouth. Tips for giving your dog a bone: Avoid bones that have been cut the length of the bone. Bones that have been cute the entire length of the bone are more likely to splinter and have sharp edges. Avoid giving bones with marrow to dogs with Pancreatitis. Instead try giving them an alternative. Avoid giving bones to dogs with previous dental work. Dogs that have had any teeth restored are in danger of braking those teeth. You are better off not giving them a bone. Instead give them a safe alternative. Freeze bones when they are not being used. Keep the bones in the freezer when they are not being used. It will help avoid contamination and help slow down the time it takes for your dog to chew a bone. Give your dog a bone following a meal. Let your dog finish their dinner. Then throw them their favorite bone. It should slow down the aggressiveness of their chewing lessening the chance of them swallowing part of the bone. Never leave your dog unsupervised with any bone. They can chew for too long and the bone can become small enough for your dog to swallow. They can also bite off pieces that can become stuck in their throat or pierce the inside of their mouth. Ten to twenty minutes is a sufficient amount of time for your dog to chew its bone. Throw away bones when they get old or worn down. Once a dog chews on a bone for a long period, it becomes more brittle with more chance of splintering. Throw it out and get a new bone. Bone powder as an alternative: If you are concerned about the repercussions of giving your dog a raw bone, you can grind them down into a powder and sprinkle it on their food. They will get the benefits of the minerals and nutrients without the risks we discussed earlier in the article. The calcium phosphate alone is enough to make the whole process worth it. Keep in mind, your dog will miss the benefits of chewing which can include healthier teeth and less anxiety and stress. Best coarse of action if your German Shepherd swallows a bone: Dogs love to chew and they love to eat. This can often times lead to your dog swallowing part of a bone and sometimes even the whole bone if is too small. You will definitely want to keep a close eye on your pooch when they are chewing on their favorite bone. According to Dr. Most of the time, the bone simply dissolves. He recommends staying away from large beef vertebrae especially from the butcher. Dogs have a tendency to want to swallow it since it is hard to break into smaller bits. It then can become stuck in the lower esophagus in the chest resulting in possible surgery to remove the bone. If he is and you can locate the bone in his mouth, try to safely remove the bone and clear the airway. If you cannot do this safely, take your dog to the veterinarian immediately. The second step to take, if your dog swallows a bone and seems fine, is to contact your veterinarian and ask them what to do. The size of the bone swallowed will determine the best course of action. On rare occasions your vet may decide that surgery is necessary to remove the bone. Step three is to wait and monitor your dog. If your dog becomes sick after swallowing the bone and starts to vomit, call the veterinarian immediately and try to take them in as soon as possible to get checked. Symptoms to look out for: Abnormal movements Blood in their stool or diarrhea Constipation. Only bones from home are safe, in most cases. In any case, bones should be disposed of after a couple of days as bacteria will form. Not all dogs can chew on bones. Many German Shepherds have poor or weakened teeth. Whether they have tooth decay, exposed enamel, or gum disease, chewing on a bone can cause instant sharp pain for your dog. Rubber or plastic bones are a safe alternative for dogs to chew on. They can be equally as dangerous as splintered bones, so choose wisely. You can see below my recommendations. Now that you know what to avoid, you can find good bones that fit within the healthy parameters from the previous section. Here are the five risks of feeding cooked bones to your German Shepherd: When bones splinter, it acts like glass. Choking is another common risk of eating cooked bones. If your German Shepherd is chewing on a bone, a piece can easily break off and go down his throat. Bones are incredibly dense, which is why they can lead to blockages when consumed. If your German Shepherd manages to swallow a piece of a cooked bone, it can get lodged in their digestive tract and cause a blockage. Sometimes, the only way to remove it is to pay for surgery. Some German Shepherds are sensitive to bone marrow, which becomes easily exposed from chewing on cooked bones. If your GSD has a sensitive stomach , then ingesting too much bone marrow could cause sickness and diarrhea as it is too rich and high in fat. Loose teeth can become shattered or ripped from their roots. Raw Bones vs. Chew Toys for German Shepherds Large raw bones are typically a safe choice for your German Shepherd to chew on, as are most chew store-bought bones. If you pulled them from a large animal, most big bones are the perfect size for German Shepherds. Raw bones should be big enough to prevent your dog from swallowing them whole. On the contrary, your GSD will get a nutritional boost from the raw bone from the calcium and phosphorus. Cons of Raw Bones You have to be very precise when choosing a raw bone for your dog. Bone marrow can cause all sorts of stomach issues if your dog is prone to tummy upsets. Supervision is necessary. Pros of Chew Toys Bones Convenient and easy to find. They allow you to continue to provide bones for your dog without requiring you to buy raw meat. Plastic bones last much longer than raw bones. If you choose a heavy-duty plastic bone, such as the Nylabone mentioned above, then your German Shepherd will be able to enjoy it for quite some time, and they also come in a range of flavors. Your dog will have to enjoy the task of chewing without being able to gnaw away at delicious raw meaty bits. Choose a flavored chew bone for your dog. The Benebone Real Flavor Wishbone is a hot choice for thousands of pet owners. The wishbone shape is ideal for dogs to grip and hold. It lasts seemingly forever, and the flavor stays around, unlike some chew toys. You can choose from chicken, bacon, or peanut. They can cause cracked teeth and other dental injuries. When the rawhide becomes soft it becomes easy for your GSD to break chunks off and swallow them. Puppies have delicate teeth and jaws, so they need softer bones that are easier to chew and digest. Here are some good options for German Shepherd puppies: Raw chicken necks or wings: These bones are small, soft, and easy to chew. They also contain cartilage and connective tissue, which can be beneficial for joint health. Raw beef marrow bones: These bones are larger and harder than chicken necks or ribs, but they contain a lot of nutrients and can be a good option for teething puppies. Additionally, any bone should be given under supervision and taken away once it becomes small enough to swallow whole. In this case, you will need to monitor them and keep an eye on their stools. However, if your GSD has accidentally eaten a cooked bone such as a rib or small chicken bone and they swallow a splinter, then you should take your dog to the vet immediately. Signs of intestinal obstruction include vomiting, lethargy, a painful tummy, and having no desire to eat. The sooner you can have your vet take a look, the sooner your dog will be safe. Note: Always watch puppies when they chew bones. They might literally bite off more than they can chew, so you need to be there to remove anything sharp or too small for their mouth. Final Thoughts German Shepherds love meaty bones just as much as any dog. As long as you follow the safety suggestions found in this post you can safely let them enjoy a good chew. Choose large raw bones bigger than their muzzle. Raw beef or lamb shank bones are a good choice. Supervise your dog at all times. There are many good alternative chew bones. Between the calcium in the bone itself and the nutrients in the marrow, this is almost as nourishing as a meal. Of course, there are some issues here. Natural bones are usually roasted before being put on sale, and this can make them very brittle. In some cases, this can lead to splintering as the dog chews, and that can be dangerous. Thus, we would recommend that you avoid natural bone products that seem excessively dry and brittle. Nylon Bones Nylon bones offer some definite advantages, but they do have one big problem: They are non-digestible. Because of that fact, nylon bones will always present the danger of intestinal blockage. These bones also tend to be harder than most, meaning that they are best suited for large dogs. On the upside, nylon bones will usually last a lot longer than most others. When they do break, they tend to break into large pieces. Still, we would recommend that you not allow your dog to use nylon bones unless you are there to supervise. These are generally molded from a mix of substances that dogs like. Meat by-products make up the majority of their bulk, but vegetable material is also usually present. Contrary to popular belief, dogs are not strict carnivores but are more like omnivores who prefer meat. Like all treats, these are not designed to serve as a primary food source. They are a lot richer in fat than most kibble, so they could cause your dog to gain weight after too many of them. Rawhide Bones These are probably the cheapest and most common chew bones, and there are reasons that many people prefer them. Rawhide is a relatively safe material, as dogs can eat a fairly large amount of it without issue. We have already talked about the dangers of this material, as it can cause various problems if your dog eats too big of a piece. Statistically, the chance of your dog being harmed by rawhide is pretty small. That being said, we would recommend that you stick with the small chews, just to stay on the safe side. Dog bones are generally not complicated, but we have tried our best to educate you as to the finer points of the subject. Even if you use natural bone, this risk is still present. If we have succeeded in that goal, we hope that you will leave a comment below. Recommended reading. Luckily, the options and quality of bones available are many that you can choose your pick from. If you are outgoing and are a very hands-on person, you might not enjoy your German Shepherd because of its shyness. Dogs can be trained and can also be flexible like some people are. Sponsor Meet Max Max is a beautiful Shepherd around years of age who found himself in the shelter after seriously biting someone over a tennis ball. His caregivers at the time where trying to re-home him anyways so they left him at the shelter to be euthanized. Max is a big, stubborn Shepherd who has clearly been allowed to do as he pleases and bully his way through life. He was recently neutered and as his hormones level out he is realizing that structure isn't so bad however Max requires an experienced German Shepherd handler. Max does well in his foster home and has had no issues meeting new volunteers and friends in his foster home. He is a rambunctious boy who likes a good adventure or stirring up the play group by trying to open the gate - anything for a bit of fun! This would make him great for sport work but also makes him terrible if you think taking toys from him is a good idea. Max does wonderful being redirected onto a new toy and is a sucker for a game of two toy fetch. Max is NOT suitable for a home with children under 13 or children who do not understand respecting the boundaries of a high drive dog. Max does well with the other Shepherds in his foster home but doesn't really understand roughhousing or playing. He is a bit more stoic during yard time preferring to keep to himself for the most part. Max will interact with the other dogs but simply doesn't care for playing or doing much with the other dogs. Max has NOT been introduced to any dogs under 40 lbs or cats. To be clear, Max is a wonderful boy in his own regard and is a very smart and eager boy. He is benefiting tremendously from force free training and has some tell-tell habits that speak to a lifetime of negative reinforcement training. If it is your belief that the way to handle a strong willed dog is adverse training this is not the dog - or rescue group - for you. This is not a battle of wills that you will win and it is not worth further damaging such an eager and fun dog so that a handler can exert their dominance. If you understand how to work with a dogs motivations to help them adjust and learn then Max is a wonderful guy who is going to make a great companion. German Shepherd Puppies vs. Adults Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky recommends starting dog training as early as possible, soon after a puppy is ready to leave its mother. Puppies are capable of learning basic commands, and smart German Shepherd puppies do great with early training. Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky has adult dog training programs as well. A complete puppy training typically takes a few months. Adult dog training can take longer or shorter, depending on whether a dog needs to unlearn bad habits in addition to being trained. Working with a German Shepherd and the owner directly in the home allows dog trainers to create personalized training plans for individual dogs, as well as address any unique needs or issues. Once a dog has completed in-home training, they can take group classes for more in-depth training - Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky offers both puppy and adult dog group classes. Beginning training in the home also helps owners bond with their dogs so when the dog trainer leaves, no progress is lost. This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form after proper conditioning , when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter. Empowering Owners We empower owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times. Personalized We deal with problem behaviors on a personal basis. Environment Specific We train wherever issues tend to arise i. Supportive We support owners in the off-hours when training is "not in session". Involved We work with all members of the household. Satisfaction Ratings Our high client satisfaction rating sets us apart from competitors. Also, be consistent about rules - establish at the beginning, for example, whether or not your dog is allowed on the couch. An energetic dog with little to no exercise can become a destructive, disobedient dog. Training is a great way to give German Shepherds the mental and physical stimulation they need. Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky has developed training programs for puppies and adult dogs alike based on positive reinforcement. German Shepherd training with our in-home option is entirely possible. All Sizes. All Ages. The Dog Training Elite Difference Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky uses modern training methods focused on positive reinforcement and bonding between dog and dog owner. Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky never resorts to the use of punishment to help dogs unlearn bad behavior. The difference becomes clear when comparing a dog that is trained out of anxiety and intimidation vs a dog who truly desires to please from the inside out. The Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky training theory is mostly based around classical conditioning, also known as the Pavlovian method or respondent conditioning. In its simplest form after proper conditioning , when an owner says "sit," their dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Through a combination of commands and an electronic collar, dogs learn to follow commands at once. Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective. Ready to turn your dog into a loyal and loving companion? Your labrador retriever has a huge appetite. It loves to eat, so it may carry its food bowl around with them, beg for food, or eat unconventional things. This is normal. The exact quantity of food you give your lab depends on which food you're offering and how many calories it contains. Follow the feeding guidelines on the food packaging, and increase or decrease the amount depending on whether the dog loses or gains weight on this ration. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source If your dog is more active than most dogs, then you should increase its food intake accordingly. For instance, if every morning you and your furry friend go for a 5 mile 8 km jog together, you should consider giving it more food than usual. If you cannot easily feel its rib bones anymore, then you are probably overfeeding it. At the same time, you should not be able to see its rib bones from afar. Your lab will get very thirsty after exercise and will need to quench that thirst. It will drink more or less water depending on how active it has been and how hot it is outside. Do not limit your dog's water consumption. Unlike food, your dog will regulate itself. Dehydration can be fatal, so don't take any chances. You lab needs a lot of exercise in order to stay healthy. Walk your lab up to three times a day and if you can, take it on long walks of a couple miles or more. Go to source If you have a backyard, make sure that it is big enough for your dog to run around. Small backyards are not suitable for big dogs like labs. Whether your lab lives outside or inside, make sure that it has a space it can call its own. Include a large, durable dog bed. Your lab will paw at the bed constantly to get comfortable. Cheap beds will rip easily and can cause quite a mess. Giving your labrador its own bed will also help you train it to stay off of yours, if you are so inclined. Labradors are a short-haired breed that come in brown, black, and gold. For most of the year, your lab will remain fairly low maintenance. Brushing your lab will also help remove dirt and spread natural oils throughout. The natural oils in your lab's fur can even help fend off fleas and ticks. Go to source Bathe your lab 3 or 4 times a year or whenever its stench gets too strong. If you take your dog on frequent walks, the hard pavement will naturally file its nails down. You can trim them at home or have a vet do it. In general, you can train your lab to sit still to have its nails trimmed. Just offer it a treat after every successful trip to your at-home doggie nail salon. Eventually, your dog will welcome it. Human nail clippers won't work effectively. Secure your dog's foot in place and then quickly clip off the nail. Do not clip too close to the base of the nail. Doing so can be very painful and cause bleeding. Make sure that the nail does not curve back into the dog's paw or is too sharp to cause accidental damage. Your Labrador's ears can become breeding grounds for bacteria if not cleaned regularly and properly. Check the dog's ears regularly for any excessive or smelly discharge, and seek veterinary advice if you notice anything amiss. If you want to clean the ears, use a specific product designed for the purpose. The more active your lab is the more likely it'll have dental issues. Take your dog to the vet for teeth cleaning 1 or 2 times a year. Routine trips to your vet can also help combat terrible breath. Since you are on the receiving end of so many slobbery kisses, this issue has probably crossed your mind and therefore is just one more reason why you should have your lab's teeth cleaned. Several kinds of toothpaste are available, many of which come in tasty flavors - e. Introduce the brush into your dog's mouth gently. Use your fingers to lift your dog's lips in order to expose their teeth. Work the brush in circles and go from tooth to tooth. Its back teeth will be the most difficult to get to, so save them for last. Make sure that you brush both sides of each tooth. Reward you dog with a treat afterwards. Every dog needs certain core vaccinations on a regular basis. It is a good idea to take your dog to the vet at least twice a year for routine exams to monitor its health and to establish a good relationship with your veterinary staff. If your pet should get hurt or is not acting normally, it is always a good idea to visit the veterinarian for an exam and medical care if needed. Your vet will also prescribe necessary medicines topical and supplemental to help ward off parasites like fleas and ticks. Go to source As your dog ages, you may see such health issues as hip dysplasia, epilepsy, or seizures. Your labrador retriever may also experience eye problems. An elderly dog with any such conditions should see a vet every two months or as advised by your vet. Go to source Advertisement. When you bring a new puppy home, it's important to keep feeding it the same food that it has been eating at its previous home. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source Talk to the person or organization that you are adopting your puppy from to see what food they are feeding it. They should willingly provide that info and they may even send you home with some if you can't find any to buy. If you can't find the right food in your local pet supply store, consider ordering it online. However, you would need to order it ahead of time so that you have it on hand when the puppy comes home. If you want to feed your puppy a different food from what it has been eating, you will need to switch its food over the course of several days. Feed that mix for several days. Finally, you can give the puppy all new food. If you are content to give your puppy the food it was originally eating, it's fine to do that. Every puppy will have different nutritional needs. Because of this, it's a good idea to discuss proper nutrition with your vet. They can suggest great foods to give your puppy and how much it should be eating. Go to source The right portion size depends on the size of your puppy and its metabolism. Ask your vet to teach you how to body score your puppy. This will allow you to do a quick visual check to see whether your puppy is losing or gaining weight. Tip: If your vet suggests a specific food but doesn't tell you how much to give your puppy, follow the instructions on the packaging. Doing 3 or 4 feedings per day allows your puppy to get enough nutrients without overwhelming its digestive system with a huge amount of food at once. This is especially important when your puppy is under 6 months old, as they have delicate systems. Go to source Don't just leave the food out all day. Take the food away after the puppy eats for about 10 or 15 minutes. Lab puppies should always have access to fresh water so that they can stay adequately hydrated. Put out a dish of water and dump it out, clean the dish, and refill it daily. Some puppies are really messy with their water dishes. To prevent a mess, try putting the water dish on a tray, so that spilled water won't go right onto the floor. Getting dried off Our guide to bathing and grooming your Labrador will help you to keep your dog clean and fresh, without the fuss. Sit your dog in front of you, outdoors if they are shedding a lot. Have a pot of treats next to you and pass them one every few seconds if they are nervous or reluctant to stay put. I usually begin at the base of their body near the tail. Make short gentle pulls downwards with the brush, and after each groom pick out the loose fur that the brush has collected and set it down next to you to dispose of later. Work your way slowly up the body and around their flanks, stopping at the neck as you reach their head. They usually have a handle strap on the back and if you find one that fits your hand comfortably they are great. For a more intensive brushing I use a slicker brush. The slicker brush gets right into the coat and does a good job of removing dead hair on a daily basis. However, sometimes the dead hair situation calls for a more assertive tool! An ordinary brush quickly gets clogged with dead hair and you will struggle to make much progress without a special tool for loosening dead hair. You can also buy a useful tool made by Kong. It is a great way to loosen the dead hair so that it falls away easily. Somewhat more controversial, are special rakes with a blade incorporated. These shedding tools can be very effective if used with care. Because Labs might be gorgeous, adorable friends. But they are also rather mucky pups. There are Labradors that are bathed every week, and other Labradors that are almost never bathed. I tend to bathe my Labs when they get a bit smelly, or if they have rolled in something unpleasant. Something which many dogs have a huge enthusiasm for! Dead animals, and fox poo, are some of their favorites. Labradors also love mud. They will go out of their way to find some, especially if you have just bathed them, or had new carpets fitted. Paddling around in muddy puddles and the edges of boggy ponds can result in a filthy and smelly coat, again a hose down may be sufficient. Dog Bathing Schedule Bathing as and when they need it is absolutely fine for most Labs. But if you want to have a routine then once a month is a nice easy schedule for most people to remember. It is a little different with puppies however. If you want to give your puppy a bath, by all means do so. It is not a good idea to shampoo your older Labrador regularly unless you really need to. Especially in the winter. This is because the shampoo strips out the natural oils and reduces the waterproofing and cold repellent qualities of his double coat. Best Shampoo For Dogs I have used a variety of shampoos on my dogs. The main thing is to avoid shampoos intended for human adults. Your alternative option is to make your own shampoo. You can do this in nice weather, outside in the backyard too. Have a couple of large towels ready before you begin. Use a glob the size of a coin, and rub with your fingers working it into the coat. Especially where he is mucky. Then hose her down and repeat. Work up into a good lather and rinse very thoroughly. Remember that dogs lick their coats so thorough rinsing is particularly important. Lay a few towels on the floor to walk him to the bath room, and lift him into the tub. Use a shower nozel to rinse and wash just as you would in the back yard. Just choose a room with a wipe clean floor if possible, and stand away from the furniture. The mechanism is similar to a carpet shampooing machine, and it makes a similar level of noise to a vacuum cleaner. They save you bending over for ten minutes at a time and eliminate any problems you might have leaning down for a prolonged period. These are also useful if you struggle to lift your dog, or if they have joint problems. Towel dry until your first towel has absorbed as much water as it can, then move on to towel number two. These are basically hair dryers for dogs. However, we selected them for inclusion independently, and all of the views expressed in this article are our own. In this article we give you step by step instructions on the basic of Labrador Retriever bathing including how frquently you should bathe your Lab. These steps are vet recommended to help your Labrador stay healthy and super duper clean. How to Bathe a Labrador Bathing a Labrador Retriever take multiple steps, and unfortunately means you will probably end up just as wet, if not more wet, than your Lab. Typically Labs love water and will work with you through the process. When done with a positive vibe, bath time can actually be a great bonding time for you and your dog. It works great and has helped reduce dog dandruff as well. Have everything you will need ready and close by the bathtub before you even put your dog in the tub will be a lifesaver. You will need a mild shampoo and conditioner, petroleum jelly, a scrub brush, a slicker brush, and a hand-held sprayer a pitcher will work here, too. Do not forget to have plenty of towels within reach. Next, to remove tangles from the fur you can use a scrub brush. Then, use the slicker brush on the undercoat to remove additional loose hair. This whole process will be easier if ou get rid of as much loose hair and dirt before starting the bath. A cotton ball in the ears helps keep the water out. For indoor baths, you can lure your dog into the tub using a treat or toy. Hopefully, your Lab will love the water experience and jump in on their own after the first encounter. Using either your hands or the scrub brush, use a mild dog shampoo working it into the coat from front to back, or head to tail. Remember your Lab has a double coat which means you have to do double the rinsing to make sure you got all of the soap from the skin and hair. Do not stop rinsing until the water is running completely clear with absolutely no signs of bubbles or streaks. This is so important; leftover soap will dry up and cause skin irritation and itchiness. Spray-on conditioners can be applied at this time, leaving a few minutes for them to penetrate the coat. Your dog will probably shake a few times to help with this step of the process. Use a brush to gently dry the in its natural direction. Using these easy steps, bathing a Labrador can become a very routine and pleasant experience for both you and your dog. This breed is highly prone to developing ear infections which are often caused by bacterial growth in the ear canal due to moisture, wax, dirt, or parasites. When you bathe your Labrador, that is a perfect opportunity to clean their ears as well. Start with the inside of the ear and work your way to the outside to remove any debris. Gently massage the base of the ear for about 30 seconds. Allow the cleanser to get into the folds of the ear and loosen dirt. Then, let your dog shake their head to remove any excess cleaner from their ears. Dry the Ears Using a cotton ball or soft towel, wipe out the ear canal. Only use the towel or cotton ball on the visible areas of the ear. Praise and Treat Your Dog After cleaning the ears, praise your dog for a job well done and give them a treat. Let them associate this experience with a positive reward. Regular ear cleaning is a must for Labrador Retrievers. How to Bathe a Labrador Retriever, Final Step: Drying After a Bath Labradors need to be as dry as possible after their bath to prevent skin irritations, hot spots and flaky skin. So the final step in our How to Bath a Labrador step by step instructions is drying. Start with the top of the head and back first, then dry off the belly, legs, and tail. However, if the weather is cool or very humid, a hand-held dryer is one of the fastest ways to get your dog warm and dry. When should a Labrador puppy have its first bath? The earliest you should give a full bath to a Labrador Retriever puppy is about 8 weeks of age. Prior to 8 weeks spot cleanings can be done as needed. The ability of the puppy to regulate its own body temperature is the primary reason for waiting. After 8 weeks old, you can bathe your puppy with lukewarm water. Remember to use a gentle or mild dog shampoo; never use human shampoo on a dog. Also, avoid using flea shampoo on any puppy younger than 12 weeks of age. How Often Should a Labrador be Bathed? Labradors who like to play in the grass or dir, swim, or roll in the mud will likely need a bath every week or two. Parasites, ticks, and fleas are far more common in muddy and swampy areas making baths more frequently required. Skin infections and dandruff may result. Of course, Labradors will be Labradors, and there are occasions where unscheduled baths will be a necessity. The same goes for Labradors who decide to leap into algae-filled ponds or those who revel in racing through mud pits at the local dog park. In these situations, you will need to bathe a Labrador Retriever as soon as possible. Conclusion While bathing your Labrador Retriever is an involved process, it is well worth the love, loyalty, and companionship these wonderful dogs provide to their owners. Perhaps more importantly, bathing your Labrador Retriever is necessary for their current and future health and well-being. To keep your Lab smelling pleasant you will need to bathe a Labrador on a routine basis. Your Labrador will be much happier if they are clean and dry, and so will you. It can help prevent mattes and tangles from forming in their coat, as well as get out any dirt or pollen in their fur. Brushing is even more important during the spring, when Labs will begin to shed their fur to prevent overheating during the summer. All of this excess fur can get tangled in their coat, as well as make a mess around your house. Try to brush a few times per week throughout the year, and once a day during shedding season. One good way is to use dry shampoo. Although dry shampoos can be useful, try not to go too overboard with them. Keep them from getting dirty in the first place by keeping them indoors whenever it rains. Also try to keep them away from any muddy areas in your yard. Fur, dust, and dirt can pile up quickly, so try to wash off their bedding every few weeks. If you keep them in a crate, make sure that you also wash this out regularly. You can use baby oil to gently wipe out the inside of their ears. Just make sure not to get the oil into the ear canal. There are also a number of products that are specially designed to clean out dog ears. You can speak to your vet about the products they recommend. If you notice that your Lab is scratching their ears, this could be a sign that they have an infection. Although you can wait and see if the infection goes away on its own, the safest thing to do is to take them to the vet to get it checked out 7. They are cheap and can be found at most stores, and are also easy to carry around with you. Although effective, pet wipes may not be the best choice if your dog has a seriously dirty, muddy coat 8. You can also find a number of groomers that will come directly to you, saving you the trouble of having to load your dog into the car. Avoid Shaving Labs have a beautiful double layer coat that helps them stay warm in the winter and cool during the hot summer months. But many owners get frustrated when their Lab begins to shed, and some decide to shave off their coat. If your Lab has a really dirty coat, you should avoid the temptation to shave it. Shaving can be hard on a Lab, disrupting their natural shedding cycle. It also makes them much more likely to get sunburnt. Play it safe and only use products that are designed specifically with dogs in mind. At Uptown Puppies , we connect you to some of the best Lab breeders and companies in the business. We only work with people who are committed to raising their dogs the right way.

So why not check them out and add a new furry family member to your home? Preparing Your House — The Basics Besides getting all of the necessary supplies a Labradoodle puppy will need, you will also have to ensure that your home itself is prepared for a puppy. What can they reach? Where will they sniff around? You have to address all manner of safety issues before your puppy arrives home. Designated House-Training Area House training, and many other kinds of training, should start as soon as your puppy moves in. Designated Sleeping Area For the first couple of weeks, it has been proven more successful when you have your puppy sleep in a crate beside your bed than in some other room in your home. Your puppy will be able to feel asleep a lot easier if they know they are close to you. So unless you enjoy having to move a single crate around your home every single day, it could be a good idea to have one for your bedroom and one for whatever other room you have planned to be their future sleeping spot. You could equip the crates with nothing more than just a waterproof mat and something to comfort them such as an old t-shirt or rag from the breeder. Baby Gates Puppy gates or baby gates, getting a few of these around your house before bringing your puppy home is a good idea. Not only are they important for training purposes, but for their own safety, they are absolutely vital. Electric Cables This is something a lot of people overlook, but it can potentially be life-threatening if not taken care of. Designated Daily Area It can be challenging enough to look after a puppy, so having a sectioned-off room or area for them can help you significantly. Before you bring your puppy home, consider having a designated area for them set up and ready for use. In this area, there should be their crate, water, food bowls, assorted toys, treats, and some cleaning products ready to use. Final Check of the Home As I mentioned above, your new Labradoodle puppy will probably surprise you with their never-ending curiosity. Having Several of the Right Kinds of Toys With new puppies, a lot of the questions I hear typically have something to do with their mouths. Their teeth, chewing, biting,… the list goes on. So this is something that we have to take a look at. And you should also remember that when bringing a new puppy home, it might not have received any worthwhile training at all. This is why having a lot of the right kinds of toys will be very beneficial and helpful to both you and the puppy. The Best Toys for a Doodle puppy include: Hard, tough chew toys. These are usually toys made from hard rubber or plastic with small recesses and massagers. Dog bones. Known for their durability and ability to last for a long time. They often have a slight flavor to keep your puppy attracted to them and they are generally a great all-round option. Interactive toys. Soft training toys. You should only use these toys for training. If you do that. Doing it like this makes the toy an efficient object for training and having a handful of these toys ready would be a great idea. But allow me to also cover some general tips and tricks on how to care for your puppy and what you should do in specific situations. Have a look at the tips below to hopefully help you understand how you should act in everyday situations that puppy owners can find themselves in. Knowing just a few of these can help you prepare better for a new life filled with puppy love. A Labradoodle puppy is very intelligent and can quickly build an association between the command and toilet time. When your puppy manages to do its business in the designated area, even if you had to carry him all the way there, give him a lot of love and praise him massively. The key to a successful life with dogs is positive reinforcement training. Talk with the breeder about what their current meal times are, and then continue following that. This will make it a lot easier for the puppy to transition into this new life of theirs. Can Your Puppy Go in the Yard? Use Comforters When talking about comforters, I mean anything that your puppy can associate back to either your or their mother. This can be anything from a smell, shape, texture, or just how the item feels. These sensations remind the puppy of having their mother with them. When I first heard about these products, I brushed it off as a silly gimmick, but I got one from a friend of mine as a gift, as I was pleasantly surprised at just how great and cute, they actually are. And they are also highly recommended by other puppy owners. Final Words So that was our small Labradoodle puppy checklist, and if you follow just half the advice given, you are as prepared as you can be before welcoming your new Labradoodle puppy to your home. You now have a comprehensive list of products, how you prepare your home best, and just what you can expect from your new puppy. Taking in a puppy, training them, and just all about their general care and well-being is a very large subject. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. This pen should be used when you are unable to pay attention to your pup. This will provide a safe place for your pup to sleep and play when you are not available to keep a close eye on him. This can also be an alternative if your pup will not tolerate a crate. It is also highly recommended to be used outdoors in the yard. The back yard can be such large and overwhelming place for the pup to get lost in and it will also help protect him from chewing on poisonous plants and flowers. It folds up flat for easy storage and travel. Includes 8 ground anchors for outdoor use, 8 corner staballizers and 4 thumb-snaps for easy assembly. Exercise Pen includes 1 year manufacturer's warranty. Not worry about birds of prey seeing them from above or coyotes jumping into the pen. There will be potty accidents in the house. Be prepared with a product that will take care of the stains and eliminate odors that can cause the pup to return to the same spot. It is safe for plants, carpeting, furniture, shoes. We provide your first bottle. Have this one on hand before something you love gets chewed on. For 1 to 2 minutes repeat YUCK over and over continuously three times a day for 2 to 3 days. This will train your pet to understand YUCK is bad. If you dog picks up a disgusting item just say YUCK and the dog will drop the item. A good variety of chew toys will help keep your pup occupied and not bored. Avoid rawhide; it is not completely digestible and colored rawhide can stain your carpet. Avoid, Nylabone products that are made from massive amounts of cornstarch. Treats should be very limited until about 4 months old or until training begins. Training can be more effective if your puppy is not used to always getting them and they can cause diarrhea in the more sensitive puppy tummy. Avoid junk food for dogs, for example, Snausages, Puproni, anything made in China, and other unnatural products. We will not provide an 8 year health guarantee for pets fed non-Lifes Abundance food and training treats. A semi-secured to fully secured pet is safer for everyone in your vehicle. If you do a lot of traveling with your pet we recommend this item. More than likely, your pet will chew their way out of a restraint if left alone. They will chew your nice seats, any seat belt in reach, or anything they think will set them free. Mane and Tail works great, too. Only wash your puppy about once a month. Over bathing can cause skin problems or irritation. Cowboy Magic- This grooming product is great for maintaining a good coat and to help eliminate matts. This product is not needed for our doodles with a fleece coat. Buy a cleaning solution and if needed a drying powder. Keep Kwik Stop on hand in case you cut the nail back too far. Bleeding will be difficult to stop without it. Blunt Trimming Scissors- For trimming between eyes, feet, etc. This will remove the dead puppy coat so the adult coat will not matt into it. This transition usually occurs before one year of age and can take several months before the adult coat is fully in. We have noticed this happens around 11 months old with our puppies. De-Matting Comb- For brushing through mats in your doodles coat. Food and Water dishes, or a water bottle to hang in the crate door. Brushes are great for surface brushing Doodles but you really need a good comb for getting the mats out and getting all the way down to the root of the hair. I love the Carlson Gates with the handles, I do not recommend the cheap accordion style wooden ones. Puppy Bed and Blankets, if puppy is peeing on their bed or blankets then replace them with a Stuffed Animals to cuddle Whelping Pads. Your puppy has been trained from birth using these so if you absolutely can not let them outside, I think these work better then the disposal potty pads they chew and drag around. Dewormer — I recommend using Safeguard dewormer, an over the counter dewormer that kills all 4 types of intestinal worms and also treats giardia which is a very common parasite transmitted via infected feces in water or soil and the 1 cause of diarrhea in young puppies. Dreamydoodles puppies are dewormed 4x before they go home and should be wormed again at home with Safe-guard at 12 wks and then every 6 months. Feed you puppy the same food at the same time every day. Puppies should be fed times a day on a strict set schedule. Growing too rabidly can cause hip, joint problems. Appetite changes. Do not worry too much just continue your feeding routine and pull up leftovers after mins and try again their next scheduled mealtime. Puppies should be drinking even when stressed. Let sleeping puppies lie. Growing Puppies need lots of sleep, so if your puppy is sleeping, just let them sleep. ALSO some puppies may sleep even more then normal the first few days home, as a coping mechanism to the stress of a new environment. Take this very short period of time to just let them settle in and start to feel at home with you and your family and THEN you can show them off to the world, in fact I encourage you too! Kids love to carry around their new puppies but most puppies. .Talk to young children about how important it is to stay calm, Not to fight over them with each other or get super loud or scare the puppy. BEFORE you know it your kids and your puppy will be the best of friends but try to take it slow especially the first week. You wouldnt leave your infant with your 3 year old right? You gotta be just as logical with your kids and your puppy. All the situations listed below should be observed at least a couple times without a negative reaction from your adult dog… before considering leaving them alone together. For example… How well does your adult dog handle the puppy jumping on them or invading their space, bugging them while their asleep? How do they react to puppy trying to eat out of their bowl, or sleeping or playing in their bed, playing with their toys etc? Introducing puppy to new people! After the first few days and once their settled in and adjusted then I recommend you start introducing them to LOTS of new people, every age, size and type of person you can find willing to meet them. You should also start introducing them to lots of new environments and new situations. Just stay away from high dog traffic areas until after 16 wks and their last set of vaccinations. MOST puppies will grow out of this, with early puppy socialization. Take some time out every day to have a short training session with your puppy. Prepare by getting out your treats, treat bag, a few toys and chews. Bonding with you puppy! The best way to bond with your puppy is through training, games and getting down to their eye level and playing with them. Throw a toy and see if you can get them bring it back to you for a treat, use their name! Remember to keep puppy training session short. Always end by asking them to perform a command or task that they know well so you can end with a big win and lots of praise. Zak George, has a ton of helpful and positive puppy training videos! Check out the rest of his videos on his channel! Take your puppy out after eating and sleeping. Supervise your puppy! Crate-training is essential! Designate a certain potty area and stick with it! Pick an area of your yard where you want them to go, preferably in a corner of the yard away from the door and where they will play the most, this not only makes your clean up area smaller then your whole yard but it also helps it click for them. .Correct accidents only when you catch them in the act. Training treats. LA turkey and berry , dried liver and salmon Puppy Proofing Tips One of the most important things you should do before your Australian Labradoodle puppy comes home is to make your home and property safe for your puppy. Below are a few suggestions on puppy-proofing your home. Click here for a complete list. You will see first hand what they might discover. Protect your puppy from any toxic plants I send home a list. Move trash cans out of reach of your puppy. Items like sanitary supplies and razors can be hazardous. Look for any drowning hazards. Full buckets, bathtubs. Move all cleaning supplies and medications up and away. Secure and elevate electrical cords. Puppies love to chew on electric cords. Electrical cords can cause burns in the mouth. You can buy cord concealers, use PVC pipe or cable wrap to eliminate the hazard. Be aware of poisonous human foods I send home a list. Falling risks. Be careful not to leave your puppy unattended on a bed, couch, etc. They can easily injure themselves falling. Secure stairs with a baby gate. Elevate and secure cords for draperies and blinds. They are a strangulation risk!

Though there is little known of its origin, we do know that this doodle dog was bred in the United States within the last 20 to 30 years for companionship and its hypoallergenic coat. Its loving, intelligent, energetic personality makes it a great choice for first-time dog owners. These designer dogs are as feisty as they are cute. And although tiny in size, they have a big, beautiful personalities. Appearance and Grooming As with many hybrids-mixed breed puppies, the coat of the Yorkipoo puppies can vary. Their non-shedding, hypoallergenic coats will always be silky and quite soft, but could also be curly, wavy, or straight. The coat can come in many colors including apricot, red and white, black, black and white, black and tan, and tri-colored. With rather long coats, they need brushing several times each week to prevent tangles and knots. A monthly bath is also recommended to keep your dog's coat soft and clean. This designer breed has gorgeous features inherited from both parents. They have the small size of their parents, dark, expressive eyes, and a feathered tail that curls over their backs. Temperament Energetic and always ready to play, this little hybrid dog breed is affectionate and loves the company of people. Because they crave the attention of their owner, they are not a breed that does well when left alone for long periods of time. If left unattended for long periods of time, they become lonely and bored, which may lead to incessant barking or digging. Family and Companionship This fun-loving and loyal puppy makes the perfect companion for any dog lovers, person, or family that can be with them much of the time. They make excellent pets for seniors or those who are retired. They can easily thrive in any environment whether it's a big home or an apartment. Their low-maintenance needs and sweet personalities make them a favorite with many pet owners. Exercise Yorkie Poos require a smaller amount of exercise than most hybrids. Though they are lively and always ready to play, a small walk around the block is really all they need to keep trim and healthy. This makes them a good choice for pet parents with limited mobility. A fenced yard is also an excellent way to keep these pups healthy and happy. Training and Socialization Their eager-to-please and enthusiastic attitudes make for an easily trainable dog. They are extremely intelligent like their parent breeds and aim to please their owners. Focusing on positive training methods while working with this crossbreed will reap the most rewards as these pups will not do well with harsh or negative methods. Early socialization is key for this curious breed as they are very interested in everyone and everything around them. Early socialization makes for a well-rounded dog. They are renowned for their loyalty and unconditional love. These beautiful pups are socialized early to ensure their transition to your home goes smoothly. The heritage of the Yorkshire Terrier and Toy poodle make for a very intelligent and easygoing pup. However, this could get their owner in some hot water with the neighbors. Early socialization and proper training can help to minimize the amount of barking as they get older. Is a Yorkie Poo a good choice for a first time dog owner? Yes, they are an excellent choice. They are very adaptable and eager to please, which means they want to keep their owner happy-making training a breeze. In addition, they thrive on giving lots of love and cuddles. Do I need to buy clothes for my Yorkie Poo because of their size? Given that these are mostly indoor pets, they will not need clothing to keep them warm, they will be quite content in their natural state. Yorkie Poo Reviews. Size Life Span These rambunctious little pups are friendly, smart, sweet, and somewhat mischievous if given the opportunity. This makes for dogs that are unafraid of possible threats and are excited for whatever adventure you might stumble upon. These tiny-but-mighty canines originated in the U. Although they are fairly new, they have gained plenty of popularity and are sure to stay. This gives the breed legitimacy and a better chance of being cared for and adopted. Before you decide a Yorkie-Poo is right for you, however, be sure to research both breeds heavily. This breed is active and loving, as well as fiercely loyal. The Yorkie-Poo is also incredibly confident and can be somewhat stubborn due to their Yorkshire Terrier heritage. These dogs love to learn, so they will be easy to train and happy to please. They enjoy learning through games, obstacles, and tasks, which makes them perfect for children! If you decide to adopt a Yorkie-Poo, you will need to give them extensive socializing. If dogs, in general, are not properly socialized they will often become aggressive and anxious. Yorkshire Terriers and Yorkie-Poos are no exceptions to this rule. When they are puppies, socialize them with other canines and new people. Yorkie-Poos adapt well to apartments, urban areas, and small families. These dogs are incredibly patient with their owners and surroundings. If you notice your dog is anxious in certain situations, you will need to identify the problem and work with them to make them comfortable again. This may mean retraining, a change in scenery, or a reestablishment of rules and boundaries. If a Yorkie-Poo lives in a small home, they will need at least an hour of daily exercise. This can be a walk usually, but once a month they will need a more strenuous workout. You can try a hike or a trip to the dog park for really good exercise. The Yorkie-Poo is generally healthy but is prone to ailments such as epilepsy, hypothyroidism, and atopic dermatitis. To keep your pet healthy, we suggest regular vet checkups, a nourishing diet, and an exercise routine. Discuss ailments or possible future ailments with your vet. By deciding on a specific diet plan, you and your veterinarian will help your dog enjoy good health for years to come. This will keep the mind and body sharp while they age. Most Yorkie-Poos can flourish on a quarter cup to a full cup of high-quality dry food twice a day. Yorkie-Poos have plenty of energy, so keeping them properly fed will help them stay happy and healthy. You should offer a dry dog food that is full of vegetables, protein, and vitamins. Though you may be tempted to free-feed or have the dish full at all times, this will give them the opportunity to overeat and gain weight. Having scheduled feeding times twice a day will improve their eating habits and overall health. A Yorkie-Poo is relatively easy to train and tends to be patient with their owners, but can become stubborn. They are a good fit for first-time or novice dog owners. They do tend to be sensitive, so positive reinforcement is important. Once you have done detailed research on each dog breed, you should research reputable breeders. You will be pleasantly surprised by how excited breeders are to discuss their puppies and practices. Thanks the presence of a Poodle in the mix, Yorkie-Poos are low shedders, but still need to be brushed every day to keep their coat healthy. They will only need to be bathed periodically when they have just played in the mud or in bad weather. These pups are somewhat hypoallergenic. This means they do not shed often and it is rare they create dander. So if you, or your loved ones, have any issues with pet dander, this may be the pooch for you! They will also need professional grooming every weeks for their coat to stay healthy. By checking regularly and cleaning carefully as needed, you can help prevent ear infections. Dental care for dogs is also extremely important, especially in small dog breeds that tend to be more prone to dental disease like your Yorkie-Poo. Yorkie-Poos can have high levels of energy, so they will need daily exercise to avoid anxiety or destructive behaviors. But, they are also small and can tire easily, so will only require a moderate amount of exercise to stay happy and healthy. Taking them on a walk for an hour is a great way to exercise your pet. A quick game of fetch before or after the walk will have them napping in no time. Be sure to bring water with you while walking with your dog. They are small and become dehydrated quickly. A Yorkie-Poo is usually 7 to 15 inches in height and 3 to 14 pounds in weight. A Yorkie-Poo will generally live 10 to 15 years. Featured Yorkie-Poo Article. Mum is a chihuahua and dad is a yorkiepoo.
