As in all German Shepherds, the ears are typically erect, though floppy ears in adult can be seen occasionally. History By , the generalized herding dogs of Europe had split themselves into a few different distinctive breeds, including the German Shepherd. During the s, there was an attempt to standardize dog breeds and promote traits that encouraged sheep herding, including speed, strength, endurance, and intelligence. However, varieties still existed from place to place. Slight breeding difference had led to slightly different shepherds. During the industrial revolution, the need for sheepdogs decreased along with the predator population. Luckily, by this point, people were already recognizing the intelligence and ability of the previous herding dogs. From this dog the breed standard grew. In just a few generations, the German Shepherd was one of the most populous in the world. Honrand fathered many puppies. Nearly all German Shepherds today are descended from him. There was quite a bit of inbreeding that occurred to produce the German Shepherd breed we know today. The Black German Shepherd has likely existed to some extent since the breed was produced. However, many dogs do not carry the completely black gene. Many completely black German Shepherds in the past were likely culled at birth due to the defect. Today, the gene is seeing a reoccurrence. Personality and Temperament The German Shepherd is often considered to be an aggressive dog. However, this is not completely true. They do have significant protective instincts, as they were originally bred to guard flocks of sheep. For instance, the German Shepherd has a bite force of over 1, newtons. But there are several dogs that rank around this as well, including the Rottweiler, Pit Bull, and Labrador Retriever. Most dogs at about this size are going to have a similar bite strength. German Shepherds are considered to be moderately active. They need just about as much exercise as dogs of a similar size. This breed is well-known for being heavily devoted to their people and easy to train. When trained properly, they will absolutely listen. However, they do have innate protective instincts. If you want to dog that is going to be protective of their family, this is a great choice. These canines do need extensive socialization starting at a young age, though. Otherwise, they can become a bit too protective of their family and territory. These canines are not the friendliest. They are people-oriented, but not with strangers. They tend to be quite unsure with strangers. At best, they usually ignore them completely. Other times, they may be obviously uncomfortable. German Shepherds have high prey drive. On the one hand that means that you can easily motivate them with a ball or tug toy. On the other hand, it requires a lot of supervision for owners that have small dogs or cats in addition to their shepherd. While your dog might not outright try to fight with a cat or smaller dog, he could even accidentally hurt them during play. They are extremely intelligent and devoted to their owners. Unlike some dog breeds, they will listen to their owners in most real-life situations. They can learn a variety of different commands very easily and will actually do them when asked. However, these dogs do need the training. Without it, they can be overly protective and even potentially dangerous. Their ease of training does make fulfilling this need quite easy, though. We do recommend puppy classes starting at a very young age. These classes provide the extra socialization that your dog needs, as well as allows you to jumpstart their training. We only recommend private classes for dogs that are too reactive around strangers and other dogs to thrive in a group class. Usually, only German Shepherds who were not properly socialized as puppies will fit into this category. If you adopt an older German Shepherd that seems in need of socialization, we recommend taking private classes with an experienced trainer. You can work your dog through some basic commands and then work on socializing them with safe people and dogs. The trainer should be able to help you in this regard. The German Shepherd is a more active breed, and completely black German Shepherds are not different. While there are more active dog breeds out there, these canines are best for those that are quite active. They need at least two medium-to-long walks per day. Puppies will likely need some extra play sessions as well. Health and Care German Shepherds are pretty healthy as far as purebred dogs come. However, they are prone to some health problems. Many of these are due to the inbreeding that occurred early in the breed, which made some previously rare traits more common. Black German Shepherds are not known to have any more health problems than their black-and-tan cousins. Their coat coloration is not associated with any particular health issues or anything of that sort. It is important to purchase these dogs from a qualified breeder, as they tend to perform plenty of health testing on any dog they plan on breeding. This helps them recognize health problems and pick only the healthiest dogs possible for producing litters. We do recommend purchasing a German Shepherd that was bred as a working dog — not one produced as a show dog. These two lines of dogs are somewhat distinct as they have been bred for two very different purposes. Show dogs tend to confirm to an extreme extent to the breed standard, which increase the amount of health problems they develop. On the other hand, working dogs were bred with practicality in mind. Many German Shepherds have hip and elbow dysplasia. This disease occurs when the ball and socket of the joint do not line up correctly, leading to excess wear-and-tear. Eventually, this cause arthritis-like symptoms, but at a much earlier age than arthritis typically shows up. Usually, this damage occurs during puppyhood when the dog is growing, but they may not show symptoms until a few years later. There are a few things pet owners can do to reduce the chance of hip and elbow dysplasia in their German Shepherd. Many of these dogs are also affected by degenerative spinal stenosis. However, this study had a notably small sample size, so it may not be entirely accurate. On a good note, German Shepherds are actually less likely to get ear infections than other dogs. Degenerative myelopathy occurs often enough in German Shepherds that they are likely predispositioned to it. This test is very expensive, so many breeders perform it on their dogs before breeding as well as on the puppies after they are born. Once the test is used regularly, it becomes very easy to remove it from the breed. Von Willebrand disease also occurs at a higher level in German Shepherds than in the normal dog population. It is likely that they are genetically predispositioned to it. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency occurs in German Shepherds as well. This condition is usually treated with medication and pancreatic supplements. It is most likely genetic, so health testing and keeping track of pedigrees is important to eliminating it in the breed. Medium-coated dogs will only need brush two to three times a week. Long coats will need combed through at least once a day to prevent mats. Because of their double coat, dogs of all coat types will shed profusely. Do not adopt a black German Shepherd unless you can deal with a lot of extra hair. Even if you brush your dog daily, they will still shed everywhere. Usually, this occurs in the spring and fall, but it can depend on your local climate. Shedding is also tied to hormones — not just the weather. There is little you can do to reduce the overall amount of shedding your dog does. However, anti-shedding shampoos and a high-quality diet can help. It is usually not too difficult to find a normal German Shepherd breeder somewhere near you. However, not all breeders produce black dogs. Most will also be significantly more expensive than a black-and-tan German Shepherd due to their rarity. Many people want a black German Shepherd, which means that you often have to be prepared to pay a bit extra. However, this is still much cheaper than you might expect for a large dog. As a common breed, they are usually cheaper than most. It may be tempting to cut corners and purchase a cheaper puppy. However, this is not recommended, especially when it comes to German Shepherds. These puppies need socialized from the moment they are born. Often, breeders put in this time and effort. We highly recommend only purchasing puppies form very experienced breeders. Otherwise, you may end up with an unsocialized puppy and a troublesome temperament. You should always ask about the pedigree of the parents, as well as the health testing the breeder has done. Ask to see the parents if at all possible. Sometimes, the father will be located somewhere else, so only the mother will be at the breeder. In this case, it is usually fine to just see the mother. You can tell a lot about a breeder form how they keep the mother and the puppies, so be absolutely sure to ask to see their living conditions. The parents should be AKC registered, so you should ask for registration. But AKC registration does not mean that the dog is high-quality. Every German Shepherd can be registered — even those with no health testing. Preferably, you should have owned at least one dog before. It is recommended that you have some experience with more active dogs, as well. These dogs are quite active and tend to be high-energy. Without the appropriate amount of exercise, they can easily become destructive. In fact, most of the destructive behavior associated with a German Shepherd is due to a lack of stimulation. German Shepherds require extensive training as well, so it is best if they have a handler that has previously trained dogs. They will take up a few hours a day as puppies and require as much as an hour or two of exercise alone. Many of these canines are more expensive than their black-and-tan counterparts. However, they have won the hearts of many pet owners. It will often take you a little bit before you locate a completely black puppy, so be prepared to sit on a few waiting lists. Despite their unusual colorations, these dogs are very similar to all other German Shepherds. They have the same temperament and work great as guard dogs. You have to prepare to train and socialize them properly. They require quite a bit more work than other breeds, but it is absolutely worth it in the end. Bullhuahua dogs are sweet, courageous, and people-oriented dogs. They are great as family dogs, especially when you have kids. They are very sensitive to their surroundings. These dogs are moderate shedders. You might want to get a good vacuum to avoid loose hair everywhere. Obesity is one of the main health concerns of every dog. Track their diet and their weight. A bullhuahua dog normally lives up to 14 years. Give your dog ample exercise daily for both their body and mind. Chihuahua English Bulldog Mix Appearance Predicting the appearance of a hybrid dog is nearly impossible. Will they have the wrinkly bulldog face? Or will they get the apple dome head of a Chihuahua? But they do have a general size and coat type. Height and Weight The English bulldog Chihuahua mix is normally a small to medium-sized dog. This doggo is bigger than Chihuahuas but smaller than bulldogs. On average, a bullhuahua has a height of nine to 12 inches. Their ideal weight is around 20 to 30 pounds. Coat and Fur The coat of your dog can be affected by what type of Chihuahua it has as a parent. There are long-haired and short-haired Chihuahuas. If the parent is a long-haired type, your bullhuahua pup may have a longer coat. But if the parent is a short-haired dog, your pup will have a short and straight coat too. Bullhuahuas also have dense coats. The possible colors are black, white, brindle, fawn, red, and blue. History Designer dogs are rather new to the scene. They have been around for only 30 years or so. But here are the origins of both the English bulldog and the Chihuahua. English Bulldog Bulldogs have been around since the 13th century. They were used for bull-baiting which was a form of bloodsport. When it was banned, fans of the bullies transformed the breed. From brawler, breeders began transforming them to the perfect companion. They toned down the physique of the dog. Their ferociousness was turned into mellowness. These dogs became a family favorite because of their friendly disposition towards children. English bulldogs were soon recognized by the American Kennel Club in .Chihuahua Modern-day Chihuahuas were descendants of the surviving Techichi dogs. They were only found in the area after years of long-thought extinction. The Techichi dogs were dogs of the Aztecs. But after their fall, many believed the dogs were forever lost with them. Americans found the specimen in the State of Chihuahua, thus the name. AKC recognized the breed in .Chihuahuas are often smarter. So, training will be easy with your bullhuahua, right? Unfortunately, that may not always be the case. There are dog owners that find it easy to train their bullhuahua pups. But many find it hard, especially when both its parents are known to be strong-willed. Their stubbornness can pass down to their pups. You need to be more patient towards them. Positive reinforcement can help as well as assuming the role of the alpha. Despite their stubbornness, never punish your dog. Exercise Bullhuahuas will need around 30 minutes of exercise. Ensure they get ample daily exercise. Additionally, keep their minds sharp as well. Mental stimulation will help. Give them dog-friendly puzzles that they can play with. Each dog is different, and one may be more like an English bulldog or vice versa. But bullhuahuas tend to be fearless like a Chihuahua. An English bulldog and Chihuahua mix dog is people-oriented. You can ensure they will protect the family , especially young children. Firstly, they can get extremely attached to the family. This may cause separation anxiety, which is bad if you leave them even for an hour. Additionally, they may inherit the mouthy attitude of bulldogs. Ensure they are trained to stop chewing and biting or it can be destructive and dangerous. Also, train them to be more social to avoid unruly behaviors and dog aggression. Nutrition All dogs are prone to obesity. Adult bullhuahua dogs will only need one to two cups of dog food a day. You can ask the vet for the best feeding plan for them. But normally, you can split a cup of high-quality dog food to two meals daily. Get a protein-rich food and make sure the number one ingredient is the source. Apart from food, ensure your dog has access to clean water always. Health and Care Bullhuahua dogs can live from 11 to 14 years on average. They are more prone to diseases. If any of the parents have a health problem , the pups will inherit it. That said, knowing about the common health concerns that affect these dogs will help pet owners like you. These are the following: Hip Dysplasia. This relatively new crossbreed is a cross between a Chihuahua and Bulldog. These cuties were bred for companionship. Breeders began intentionally mixing the Bulldogs and Chihuahuas in the s in North America. They were created in 13th century England and used in horrific blood sports for bull-baiting— that is, until when England banned these sports. When this happened, the Bulldog almost went extinct. Over time, though, breeders gave the Bulldog a second chance. They began breeding these dogs as companions with friendly, gentle attitudes and loving personalities. Bulldogs are now the 5th most popular breed according to the AKC and are part of the non-sporting group. The Bulldog is pounds and inches in height; females are generally smaller. Unfortunately, this breed only has an year lifespan, most likely due to their large list of health issues, many a product of their adorable pushed-in faces and stocky bodies. Some say they first came out of Egypt, others in China, and some even say they hailed from Central and South America from the Techichi dog, a breed thought to have healing powers. These toy-to-small dogs stand at only inches and weigh under 6 pounds. They have an impressive lifespan of years. These little fireballs are great for apartment living. Their life expectancy is years. These dogs are energetic and friendly as the American Bulldog with a sassy side from its Chihuahua parent. Due to the size differences between American Bulldogs and Chihuahuas, most of these crossbreeds are multigenerational. These funny-looking pups often have striking Chihuahua looks with a round head, big round eyes, and erect ears. These mixes can weigh anywhere between 3. These dogs are loving and friendly but still tend to have dominance issues thanks to their bossy Chihuahua genes. What does a Bullhuahua look like? Their head is larger than their body in proportion, and they have short necks and tails, as well as arched, meaty paws with small, curved tails. The Bullhuahua will inherit traits from both parents; since there are several varieties of Bulldogs French, American, and English , they could have many different combinations and looks. They tend to retain the Chihuahua-like facial features, including their signature perky ears, round heads, and thin lips. How big do these dogs get? What are Bullhuahua coats like? They can be stubborn and therefore difficult to train. It would be best if you had a firm hand in training a Bullhuahua. They are mostly tolerant of children mostly just older children , but often not good with other pets. If you already have other pets in the home, ask your veterinarian about the best practices for introductions before bringing your Bullhuahua home. These pups need a lot of attention, especially from the one family member to which they tend to cling. Their need for constant attention, though, makes them susceptible to separation anxiety. It would be best to socialize the Bullhuahua at an early age to give them the best chance of being well-behaved and manageable. They are often easily excitable and can be short-tempered— expect lots of talking back! How to Care for your Bullhuahua Exercise needs Bullhuahuas have low maintenance exercise requirements. Your Bullhuahua should exercise for about 5 miles per week. Indoor exercise is also necessary. A bored Bullhuahua is a destructive one! Their teeth need daily brushing because their mouths tend to be small and crowded. Dental hygiene is linked to heart health, so this is one of the most important regimens to stick to! They have minimal coat maintenance, as they shed very lightly. I recommend clipping their nails every few weeks but bathing only when necessary, as excessive bathing can lead to dry skin. What to feed your Bullhuahua Bullhuahuas should eat cups of dry kibble per day. These dogs may be prone to obesity, so keep treats at a minimum— or make healthy choices such as carrots! Bullhuahua Health Bullhuahuas are generally healthy and have a 10 — 15 year lifespan. There is an ongoing debate about crossbred versus purebred health, and some experts believe crossbreeds are generally healthier than purebreds. However, crossbreeds still may inherit one or more common health problems from either parent. Even the Chihuahuas are known for their short-tempered nature. Hence, do not be surprised if you find your puppy growing up to an obstinate or independent-natured dog. The French bulldogs are not known to be very loyal and often suffer from little dog syndrome, which makes them frequently excited. It is recommended not to leave them alone with your kid or pets since they get easily provoked or irked. Although, by instinct, they are not very friendly with strangers and would throw warning calls the moment they would come across anything suspicious. However, they do not make excellent watchdogs. The French Bullhuahua love attention and, to remain happy, they need constant interaction with the family. These dogs can adapt to all weather conditions. In warm temperatures, supply them with plenty of fresh drinking water, while in the cold, the short-coated dog might need a sweater. Care Exercise The bullhuahua does not need too much exercise. There are primarily two reasons for this. First, they are small-sized dogs, and secondly, they remain active all day playing around the house, or wherever they get a chance. They love to walk and run, and hence take them out with you once a day so as to satisfy their playing instincts. You can also take them to the dog park. This should also help them socialize well. Grooming The dog has a short coat, and do not shed much, and hence requires minimal grooming. Rest is general care meant for small size dogs. Keep a check for any ear infections, especially if your dog has inherited hanging ears. Also, trim their nails when long and brush their teeth at least 2 to 3 times a week. Health Problems Like most other crosses, the French bullhuahua is not much prone to any specific diseases limited to their breed. But keep general dog diseases into consideration. Also, ask your breeders about the health issues or ailments, if any, borne by its parents. You should also take your dog to the vet for a routine checkup once a year. Training You must take socialization and obedience training for this dog seriously. These dogs are not too obedient and might act obstinate from time to time. Begin training your puppies firmly and tactfully when they are still young. Instead, using a positive reinforcement method is recommended. Be firm and consistent, gather patience and praise your pup frequently as and when they show you success. Give them a loving pat; give them food treats every time they pick up a trick or training. Grooming Both Chihuahuas and American Bulldogs have short coats that don't need a lot of maintenance, and the American Bulldog Chihuahua mix is no different - though they do shed more. To keep their coat looking smooth and healthy, it's important to brush them at least once or twice each week. American Bullhuahuas need more baths than some breeds, so make sure you give them a good scrub anytime they are starting to stink! Training The American Bulldog Chihuahua mix is a smart pup, but they can have a strong will that makes training difficult at times. That could mean going for short walks every day or engaging them in active games like fetch and tug-of-war throughout the week. So long as they're getting their daily dose of exercise, you'll have a well-rounded and content pup on your hands -- but mess up with their activity levels and you may have some mischief on your hands! Male vs Female American Bullhuahua Male and female Chihuahua American Bulldog mixes differ in many ways, such as size, temperament, and energy level. Males are usually larger than their female counterparts but will come when called and trained with patience and consistency. Females tend to be calmer than males of the same breed, making them better companion dogs. They tend to have more exuberant personality traits and prefer an active lifestyle. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Vets can treat ear infections with antibacterial or antifungal medications, but they need to be treated quickly before they spread or cause permanent damage. Trauma Physical trauma to the ears can also cause them to droop. The most common trauma that causes changes to the shape of the ears in German Shepherds are bites from fighting with other dogs. If your dog has a visible injury to their ear, you should take them to see their vet to check it over and dress any wounds to prevent infection. Make sure to brush your GSD regularly, also around the head and ears — these dogs shed heavily! You can get these over-the-counter at your vet, online, or in a pet store. You can also use a few drops of olive oil for wax build-up, but not too much. To administer, get a towel and ask your dog to lie down in a comfortable place in the home. Then, massage the mase of their ears for around 30 seconds to help it loosen any wax or dirt. Finally, allow your dog to shake their head and use the towel to catch what comes out. That said, if they have particularly problem ears, you should ask your vet and do it however often they suggest, which could be weekly or monthly. However, this is very controversial. It is not yet illegal in the USA, but it is also not something that we would recommend outside of medical necessity, as it can be unnecessarily stressful and painful for dogs. The method known as taping is done by placing something, usually tape, inside the ear to make it stand up straight and grow into that position permanently. It can be effective when done during puppyhood and usually takes weeks to work. As we mentioned above, nutritional deficiencies can cause the ears to flop. Puppies should eat nutritionally complete and balanced food that is enriched with calcium, vitamin D, and DHA for healthy bone and brain development, as well as high-quality protein sources like chicken and fish for strong muscles, and tasty, fiber-rich fruits and veggies. All puppies should have a handful of strong, hardy chew toys to avoid being destroyed during teething, but they can also help the ears to stand up. This is because the ears are connected to the jaw. So, strong jaw muscles means stronger ears, too! Finally, you should avoid playing too rough with your pup and interacting with boisterous dogs to prevent accidents and traumas, which, as we mentioned above, could damage or change the shape of their ears. Dogs communicate with us owners in many ways; they bark, they growl, and they use their bodies. Body language is a key part of understanding how your dog is feeling. Dogs use their entire bodies to communicate; including their tails, their eyes, and their ears! This often happens when a suspicious stranger or an unknown or unfriendly dog is approaching, or when there is a strange noise inside the home. When their ears go back or downwards, it could simply mean that they are listening, or it could indicate either excitement or anxiety. Excited dogs may whine, wag their tails very quickly, and run towards what they are excited about. This happens a lot when dogs are greeting a loved one. An anxious dog, on the other hand, may lower their head and cower their bodies away from what is causing their anxiety. If they are frightened, they may also tremble and whine, and if they are feeling angry or threatened, they may show their teeth and growl. This can happen when a dog is exposed to a phobia or an aggressive dog. It can be difficult to determine exactly how a mixed dog will look. Different pups from the same litter can also present with different traits from their siblings. That said, certain traits, like short hair, for example, are genetically dominant and therefore will be passed on over others, like long hair, which is genetically recessive. Dominant traits are those that require only one copy of a specific gene for the trait to be passed down to a pup. Recessive traits, on the other hand, need two copies; one from each parent. Factors such as separation anxiety or long stretches in a crate can cause a dog to act in this manner. You should also take an active role in preventing it while on walks or at the doggy park. Some of the canine instincts may not make sense to us. Nevertheless, they are perfectly normal in the canine world. Fortunately, correcting unwanted habits like stool eating is possible. It involves finding out the cause behind it and taking the appropriate actions. German Shepherds may eat their own poop for any number of reasons. Dietary deficiency, diseases, copycat behavior, behavioral problems, and even ancient genetic instincts may be reasons why your GSD eats their own stool, as the American Kennel Club AKC points out. This term applies equally to dogs, cats, and other pets. In the rest of this article, we will talk about the many reasons why you might catch your German Shepherd eating their own stool. While it is unlikely your dog is physically feeling hunger pangs when they go to eat their stool, it is quite possible there is an underlying dietary deficiency driving the behavior. As VCA Animal Hospitals explains, dietary deficiency in dogs can arise from a number of different potential causes. As this iFeeder report indicates, analyzing pet foods is big business in and of itself, and there is a lot of money riding on manufacturer reputation. So often you have to look for other clues — such as poop eating — to detect when there may be a mismatch. When a dog is missing certain vital nutrients, they may go back to their own poop to try to absorb more nutrition from each portion of the food they eat. This is a practice that is so essential for some mammals such as guinea pigs that they die if not permitted to engage in coprophagy. Luckily, dogs do not have a genetic nutritional need to eat their poop. But they may do so if their diet is chronically lacking. Your dog has parasites When your dog has parasites, they are essentially eating for the parasites as well as for their own health and nutrient needs. Unfortunately, eating poop is one of the primary ways that a dog can pick up parasites like hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm in the first place, as Vetz Insight explains. But it is not the only potential trigger. Deficiencies in certain key digestive enzymes may also be a culprit. As PetMD explains, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or EPI, is the best-known medical problem that can result in coprophagy in dogs. The pancreas is responsible for producing a number of important digestive enzymes along with insulin. The latter is caused by defective cells. The former can be genetic or induced and may also be triggered by canine diabetes. Ongoing issues with diarrhea. Increased stool output. Eating stool. Interestingly, some German Shepherds that only seem to want to eat the stool of a particular dog may actually be responding to disease in the other dog. This can include stool, although it can also extend to other non-food objects like rocks, grass, leaves, stones, sticks, fabrics, and more. While most cases of pica are considered to be linked to behavior rather than medical problems, with coprophagy there can be a clear medical component as well. If your German Shepherd has a tendency to eat poop and other items that are not on the menu of a typical canine or are not on any menu at all , your pet may be suffering from pica. Your German Shepherd Dog Eats Poop for Behavioral Reasons If your dog has been evaluated and tested and your canine veterinarian has ruled out a possible medical cause for coprophagia, the other main area to look at is behavioral. In other words, German Shepherds that are healthy otherwise may still choose to eat their own poop. But why, you are probably wondering? This is what we will look at in the next section. GSD puppies, like all puppies, rely on the mother dog to lick them and remind them to do their business. Learning how to poop on their own is a big part of early puppyhood. It is a big deal! When your GSD puppy came home with you, potty training became a big part of daily life. Your puppy probably got lots of attention and praise when it was potty time and things went well. In the same way, if your puppy pooped in the house, they likely got quite a bit of attention for this as well — you might not have been happy about it, but your puppy was because your attention was focused on them. As Canine Journal explains, a poorly trained and socialized or previously traumatized German Shepherd may resort to poop eating rather than seeking attention in more positive and acceptable ways. This outdated and ineffective form of training is now thought to actually encourage coprophagia in dogs that have been subjected to it. The dog may start to eat their poop to hide it and avoid further discipline. Along the same lines, German Shepherd dogs can be especially prone to developing separation anxiety, which is another behavioral issue that is linked to poop eating. Your German Shepherd is acting out of instinct While this explanation walks a fine line between genetics and behavior, wild canid females have often been observed eating the feces of their young to try to remove the scent and throw potential predators off the trail. But what about when male puppies or adult GSDs do this? In this case, canid behaviorists think it may have to do with puppies watching their mother eat poop and picking up the behavior from her. After all, canid pups in the wild have to learn everything from their mother and would be carefully watching and mimicking everything she does — including eating their own poop. According to a research study reported in Live Science , the majority of dog owners that have tried to discourage stool eating in their dogs have experienced low or no success. However, this is not to say it is impossible to train your dog not to eat their own poop. You will just need a lot of patience and persistence to find what works to discourage your German Shepherd from eating poop. This will require consistent, determined effort on your part. You will need to watch your GSD closely on potty breaks and quickly remove the feces and dispose of it in a secure location. If your dog goes out at night or early in the morning, you will need to bring a flashlight to make sure you see where the poop is and can pick it up right away. Then you will reinforce this with praise, pats, treats, and attention. This way, you always know where to look to pick up the stool and your GSD is not lingering near it long enough to potentially eat it. But to dogs, it is quite possible they just eat poop because they like it! This can have an unexpected benefit if you need to train your GSD not to eat their own poop. As PetCareRX highlights, there are soft chews and additives available that may change the taste of the poop to make it undesirable. Foods like zucchini and pineapple can also change the tastebuds and may make poop and everything else taste different from your dog. Use a head or muzzle restraint This is not an ideal choice for training your German Shepherd dog not to eat poop for two reasons. One, restraints can be difficult to manage and your dog may be very determined to get out of a neck cone or head collar. And two, if your dog decides to mash their muzzle or restraint down on the poop to try to eat it anyway, then you have to clean it and your dog. But if nothing else is working, it is certainly worth a try. For example, if your GSD has developed separation anxiety, this can require special and intense training to overcome. You may need to temporarily put your dog in a daycare program or hire a dog sitter to keep your anxious GSD from eating their own poop. Alternately, if your German Shepherd hates their crate or some other aspect of their living space, you may need to explore an alternate arrangement for when you need to confine your dog. German Shepherds are extremely intelligent working dogs that have been bred for more than a century to work hard at difficult, demanding, and sometimes dangerous jobs. Your dog may be bored and lonely and acts out because eating poop is something to do to fill the time. You may find that adding more canine athletics, taking your dog for more walks, adding some additional playtime, and using more puzzle toys and treat toys work to tire out your dog and keep poop eating behavior at bay. Remember, above all else, your German Shepherd dog wants your attention, time, and love. More of you often equals less eating poop. Coprophagia consumption of feces can be divided into 3 groups. These are: 1. Autocoprophagia: means a dog consuming its own feces 2. Intraspecific coprophagia: the consumption of feces of other dogs 3. Interspecific coprophagia: the consumption of feces of other animals and humans. Studies have shown that, historically, many dogs in developing countries developed a taste for feces while scavenging through trash including feces while trying to scavenge their next meal. While this behavior may seem rather indiscriminate, studies have also shown that the same dogs actually displayed a level of discernment, as they showed a disinclination to consume feces more than 2 days old. Wolves that are old or injured attempt to clean up their den areas that are shared with others by eating their feces. This is because they are intuitievely aware that the feces contains parasites. By consuming the feces within two days of defecating, it is ensured that the feces will be consumed before any parasite eggs hatch and infect any other wolves present. While there are many reasons why GSDs may eat poop, some of the most common reasons are as follows: Underfeeding Hungry dogs, dogs who do not eat regularly, or are starving are more likely to eat the feces of other dogs, animals, and humans. Dogs that eat only once a day and start eating poop may need more daily meals. Malabsorption Sometimes a GSD will eat feces if he is fed poor quality food long-term, especially if the food is high in fat content. Eating poop can also occur in dogs that are nervous, frightened, or under the influence of stress. Stress is a common cause of behavioral problems in dogs. If you feel that this may be the case with your GSD, it may be wise to consult with a dog trainer or behaviorist. A solution may be as simple as alleviating boredom. Other times, a GSD may see another dog eating feces, so he will want to try it too. It is also not uncommon for a young puppy to see his mother eating feces. It is common for a puppy to then simply imitate the behavior. Punishment If a GSD is being verbally scolded for pooping in the house, he may resort to eating his own feces in an attempt to make it disappear — no body, no crime! It is for this reason that it is very important to never scold your dog for pooping in the house. The true solution is proper potty training. For example, when intestinal parasites are present, they exhaust the body and draw nutrients from it, causing your dog to feel increased hunger. A very common cause of this issue in German shepherds can be the Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency EPI. This is a condition characterized by a lack of digestive enzymes, which results in the inability to digest food properly, and thus leads to the inability to absorb nutrients. A dog suffering from this disease loses weight despite its good appetite and suffers from frequent and abundant diarrhea. Diabetes One of the causes of increased appetite and coprophagia as well can be diabetes. When cortisol levels are too high or too low, it can cause a host of problems. Attention-Seeking Behavior A German Shepherd may eat poop simply as a way provoke his owner into reacting. This is not too different than the behavior of a child when it wants attention. And, just like when dealing with a child, it is very important that you keep your cool if this is happening with your GSD. Reacting to it will only serve to reinforce the behavior. Forced and Restricting Confinement German Shepherds need space. This is why we highly recommend owning a GSD only if you have a large living space and preferably a yard. This is very common in GSDs that have been rescued after spending time in a crowded shelter. Living In Isolation German Shepherds are especially social dogs — much more so than other breeds. It is for this reason that they do not do well living in isolation. In fact, GSDs are highly susceptible to separation anxiety. As previously mentioned, anxiety can be a cause for poop eating behavior. There are, however, a few actions that you can take to curb this behavior if you feel that it is problematic. Make sure that you guide him away from eating poop while the behavior is under your control Properly Socialize Your German Shepherd As a German shepherd owner, you have to be prepared for long walks and running, because your dog needs them, at least twice a day. If possible, allow your dog to socialize with other dogs, which, along with a quality relationship with his owner, will help help him to avoid boredom and anxiety — both common reasons for a dog eating poop. Instead of one meal, divide the daily amount of food into several meals, so that your dog does not feel hungry during the day. In my experience, dogs that eat balanced raw or cooked foods are less likely to consume feces.
