Since we retire our moms at 6 years old, you do not wait until 6 to breed them its impossible to not breed those who may develop a problem. For the boys its terrific that the oldest males can still sire puppies if they are still passing their heart exams. If none were bred, there would be no cavaliers left the heart problem is so common. Fortunately they now often live a long life without needing medication, or only at the end of life. Before, and still happening in lines that no testing is done, they often only live until 6 to 8 years due to severe heart problems. Without testing you can assume they have bad hearts. Its up to the public to be sure the parent dogs are tested annually, or at least bi-annually and ideally have passed a heart exam within the last fiscal year.
