With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. We have answers. What are some fun facts about French Bulldog puppies for sale near Joliet? French Bulldogs, also called Frenchies, are one of the top ten most popular dog breeds in the United States. They were originally bred to be an indoor lapdog for French workers in the 19th century. French Bulldogs are quite muscular, though they are a small size. These pint-sized pups love to play and show off their generous personalities. Some fun facts about French Bulldogs include their signature facial expressions. They have an unforgettable look with their short broad heads and bat ears. Frenchies also have an uncanny ability to make intimidating barks, but tend to be more bark than bite. With French Bulldog puppies for sale in Joliet, what is their coat like? French Bulldogs have a short, sleek coat that lies close to their body with little shedding. Typically, the coat is fine and smooth with wrinkles on the head, neck, and shoulders and is either brindle, fawn, white, or a combination of these colors. Their coat only requires minimal grooming and bathing as they produce less dander and hair than most other breed. If you have allergies and want a pup that won't irritate them, Frenchies are a great fit. What do Joliet French Bulldog puppies for sale eat? French Bulldogs typically enjoy a good quality kibble as their primary source of nutrition, as well as occasional treat foods like small, low-fat pieces of cooked meat and vegetables. To ensure they receive all the nutrients they need to stay healthy, a balanced diet should be provided and daily nutritional requirements should be met as advised by their veterinarian. A combination of wet and dry food is also beneficial to their overall health and well-being. Additionally, it is recommended to avoid giving high-fat snacks and treats to French Bulldogs as these can lead to obesity and other health problems. What are some essentials I should buy before getting French Bulldog puppies in Joliet? Before getting a French Bulldog, it would be helpful to have some important essentials on hand such as a bed, leash, and food bowls. You'll also want to prepare for any health issues with items such as flea and tick prevention and any necessary medications, as well as vet visits. Other items may include a brush for grooming, chew toys, soft treats, and a calming scent like lavender oil or chamomile to help relax your pup. You may also want to invest in a puppy training program to help your pup learn proper behavior and how to respond to commands. How fast do French Bulldogs for sale in Joliet grow? As French Bulldogs grow, they follow a growth pattern that can vary from puppy to puppy, but typically they reach an average height of 11 to 13 inches and an average weight of 16 to 28 pounds. Therefore, you can expect that your French Bulldog puppy should grow to a size that falls somewhere within these measurements. However, the exact size will likely depend on factors such as gender, genetics, and general health. It's beneficial to speak with your veterinarian for more personalized insight on your puppy's size expectations. How many minutes per day should I walk French Bulldog puppies near Joliet? It is important to ensure your French Bulldog gets enough exercise and mental stimulation on a daily basis. Generally speaking, a good goal would be to aim for 30 minutes of exercise per day. That exercise could include one longer walk or a few shorter ones. In regards to the actual amount of time you should spend walking your French Bulldog each day, the amount may vary based on the energy level of your specific pet. More active French Bulldogs may need up to an hour or more daily while the less active French Bulldogs could probably get by with less. Are French Bulldogs in Joliet good with kids? In fact, due to their size, mild temperament, and affectionate nature, French Bulldogs tend to be better suited to being around children than some of the larger breeds. They tend to get along well with both young and old alike, with a low aggression rate and preference of gentler activities over rough-housing. French Bulldogs make excellent family pets due to their loyalty and faithfulness, as well as their ease of grooming. How many minutes per day do I need to train Joliet French Bulldogs for sale? The amount of mental stimulation you provide your pup is equally as important as the physical activities.
Exercise Grooming In the past, the English bulldog was used by foreign immigrants who moved to South America and brought their dogs with them. The breed, however, became close to extinction after the second world war. Some breeders, John D. Johnson, and Alan Scott kept infusing several bulldogs together in the bid to breed the American Bulldog while monitoring its health and capabilities. Today, the American bulldog is completely rid of the fear of being extinct and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in the country. The American bulldog is many sizes larger than the English Bulldog; however, they are quite similar when it comes to their temperament. It is basically a huge, cuddly, lap dog that loves children and is very affectionate. It is brave, confident and extremely loyal to its owners. They can be quite reserved when around strangers as they like to mark their territories. When trained from a young age, the American Bulldog will display an impressive level of intelligence. They are not so friendly with other strange dogs and mostly like to keep to themselves. As earlier stated, the American bulldog is a fun-loving, happy dog that thrives in a family setting. The perfect environment for this breed would be a home with a large backyard that is well fenced-in. Since they are very energetic and must be kept active, it is imperative to their growth that they have ample space to run around during the day. This is crucial for their mental and physical well-being. For dog lovers who live in apartments, the American bulldog might not be the best option for them. This is because there is inadequate space for them and being left alone would adversely affect their mental health. They can also become very irritable and destructive if left alone for long periods as they need constant mental and physical stimulation. The American Bulldog needs about two hours of outdoor exercise on a daily basis. It goes without saying that this breed is not suitable for people who work many hours every day. This dog breed requires basic physical and mental stimulation like jogging, walking, chasing balls, playing fetch, farm work, agility, and basic obedience exercises. Due to the temperament of the American Bulldog, it has to get as much exercise preferably in the outdoors. If its exercise requirements are not consistently met, this dog breed will take out its frustration in your home by chewing apart and basically destroying everything it comes in contact with while running around. The American Bulldog has quite a short coat with a minimized length and this feature makes it easy to groom. Brushing their coats weekly is usually enough when it comes to grooming the American Bulldog as they do not shed a lot. They also need thorough baths weekly or as needed as this will keep the shedding in check. Our American Bulldog puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell. American Bulldogs love routine and will adapt to an exercise and grooming routine if the owner enforces it perfectly. As loyal dogs, they love to please their owners but will only obey upon frequent reinforcements. Do American Bulldogs shed a lot? Since they do not have a lot of fur, they do not shed a lot and owners will not have a lot of hair to clean up, unlike many other dog breeds. Why do American Bulldogs have webbed feet? This is mainly due to genetics and is not a cause for concern. Should American Bulldogs be spayed? Many vets advise that American Bulldog owners should ensure their pets are neutered or spayed when it is between four and nine months. How often should American Bulldogs be fed? The American bulldog has a very large appetite in its formative years. They must, therefore, be fed very often about four times daily and in double portions when they are puppies right until they turn four. Are American Bulldogs a food fit in families? The American bulldog will fit right into your family. They love kids and tend to gravitate towards them. Do American Bulldogs have common health problems? A lot of the health problems experienced by American bulldogs are mostly genetic and do not affect the entire breed. These ailments could range from the kidney to thyroid disorders and a lot more. What is the American Bulldogs life expectancy? The American bulldog has an average lifespan ranging from ten to fifteen years. What is the American Bulldogs average size? The average American Bulldog can grow to 58kg for males and 41kg for females. However, it is important that their diets are closely monitored to keep them from getting overweight. How tall do American Bulldogs get? The male American bulldog can grow as tall as 71cm while its female counterpart can grow up to 61cm. If you want a loyal, smart and incredibly active dog, then the American Bulldog is the perfect fit for you. Are you interested in purchasing a American Bulldog? Fill out the below form and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. We have developed a breeding program to produce all around sound American Bulldogs. Our American Bulldogs are show quality for working or as a great family pet. Our dogs are family raised and great with children. Bull Pulls American Bulldogs are consistent in type and health. He has lots of energy and needs lots of attention. He can be a bit reserved around some new people but will be fine with them quickly after getting to sniff around a bit and treats given by strangers. Obie does have some leash aggressive towards some of the other big dogs in my neighborhood. He goes to day care once or twice a week and he is loved by all the staff there. He gets along with the other dogs. He loves to run around and go on long walks. He loves being outside, long walks, dog parks, or just laying out on the patio in the evening. He will try to chase squirrels, cats, or the fox that roams around but he leaves the geese and ducks alone. He has never been around children, so I am unsure how he would react around them; but he is a big boy and gets excited and jumpy at times. He loves going on car rides, he rides with me on the 8 hour drive to visit my family in Kentucky where he is very attached to my mom and sister. They have a pitty mix that he plays very well with. He also loves to pull when walking! Please reach out directly to the owner Shawn Martin for more information. Shawn Martin. We specialize in Bully-type, also sometimes referred to as Johnson American Bulldogs. However on occasion we do produce fantastic standard- and hybrid-type American Bulldogs. We breed for functional and balanced temperament allowing for the American Bulldog to be a family member and a companion while having the drive and intelligence to perform desired functions. At Grand Future, we typically produce large American Bulldogs. Males range in lbs and females range in lbs. We have always bred to a significantly stricter breed standard than the current American Bulldog breed standards under U. Dogs with the following characteristics are not shown at conformation shows nor bred in our kennel: 1. Full black mask — this genetic trait is usually a result of another breed having been infused into the gene pool. Usually a dog with a kinked tail itself is not at risk of health complications as a result of the kinked tail. Teeth — dogs missing more than 3 teeth. Dogs lacking full pigmentation are more susceptible to various health problems. Lack of pigment is also responsible for deafness in dogs. We have never produced a deaf dog. Interested in a puppy? We have many repeat buyers — over 30 families have purchased 2,3,4, and even 5 dogs. Our dogs generally love children and have balanced temperament. Having produced over dogs in 7 generations, we have history and data that allows us to make some conclusions that we believe are significant. The very common problem of hip dysplasia that afflicts this breed is nearly non-existent in our kennel. Our dogs tend to have normal locomotion — good movement due to anatomically sound physical structure. Our dogs have never torn ligaments such as the Canine Cruciate Ligament CCL , which leads us to conclude that such problems are likely hereditary in nature. Our dogs have never prematurely died from heart problems, which leads us to conclude that such problems are likely hereditary in nature. Our dogs have never been diagnosed with tracheal hypoplasia — a hereditary genetic defect common in bulldog breeds that leads to potential deadly obstruction of the airway. Our dogs tend to live long. Our foundation dog lived to the age of 15 years and 10 months old. Our dogs have never been afflicted with cancer at a young age. The earliest instance of cancer has been encountered at 8 years of age by one dog. The remainder of cases have been documented at over 10 years of age. The biggest tragedy for an owner is in having to care for a sick dog as a result of poor breeding, and be absolutely helpless as that dog passes in their arms. Exorbitant medical bills end up being paid to prolong the time together even by just a little with the beloved family member. As with any animal breeding program, our kennel is not immune from problems. This drives us to continually improve. We maintain contact and help our owners in any way we can; even at 4AM or during a vacation since we have owners all over the world in various timezones. Our breeding expertise enables us to deliver healthy, beautiful, strong, and intelligent American Bulldog puppies. We provide a contractual health guarantee against the following genetic health problems — hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, Canine Cruciate Ligament CCL ruptures, cataracts, entropion, ectropion, heart, kidneys, thyroid, ichthyosis, cryptorchidism, epilepsy, and any neurological disorders including NCL. Our conversation with a prospective owner always involves questions to understand the kind of dog the person would like — the more details the better. If so inclined, the prospective owner can request guidance in picking the puppy based on personality and activity level, temperament, phenotype, and more. We evaluate our puppies at 6 weeks of age on a variety of parameters. We provide lifetime unlimited advice and guidance by phone to owners concerning all subjects relating to dog ownership. You can be sure you will have the information you need to succeed even if this is going to be your first American Bulldog puppy. Because we stand by the quality of our work, we want our owners to participate in our breeding program and we are happy to provide the necessary guidance. Our dogs are also ideal candidates for service animal work. Training a service dog requires a significant investment of time and money, making the genetic health and temperament of the dog even more critical. A service dog needs to be healthy, hassle-free, intelligent and receptive to training, have stable temperament to handle any type of environment, and of course lead a long life disease-free. All of these selective requirements for service dog candidates make Grand Future American Bulldogs an ideal fit. Join us in our mission of producing the best American Bulldogs possible! Today it is one of the most popular breeds because they are affectionate, brilliant, and loyal dogs. This means that English Bulldogs make great family pets for people who have time to give them love and attention because these puppies require daily exercise! If you are thinking about getting an English Bulldog, you can look for English Bulldog puppies for sale. English Bulldog was created in England in the 19th century. English Bulldog was bred to fight other dogs, so they needed a strong body and short muzzle. They were brought to England by an aristocrat named Lady Lilford, who later started breeding them with other bull breeds that created what is now known as Alaunt. The ancestor of present-day American pit bull terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Then these traits were passed on through generations of breeding Bulldogs together that had similar characteristics. This is how the current English Bulldog looks like it came into existence. Aside from being a cute companion, English Bulldog has another vital role of being the mascot of American Marines. Personality English Bulldog puppies are full of life and energy. They have an influential personality and will need early socialization with people, animals, and places. Hence, they grow into well-rounded adults who can handle different situations without becoming fearful or aggressive. English Bulldogs love everyone — they don't discriminate between kids, adults, or other animals. They're playful and energetic throughout their lives, so they need to be taken on daily walks or jogs to maintain a healthy weight. You can never go wrong in choosing an English Bulldog. They're very loving and loyal to their families, eager to please, and like to be the center of attention. You can rely on an English Bulldog to stick by your side through thick and thin. Caring and Living with an English Bulldog They should always be outside to go potty and never unsupervised. In regards to their grooming, we have decided that we will do the brushing and bathing. We also need to talk about when they can go outside in our backyard, if at all. Also, what foods are good for them to feast upon are expensive, so we want to make sure they are eating well. Knowing these things ahead of time is going to be so helpful because puppies grow up fast! It's best if they know not to jump on the couch already from the get-go and not from when they are puppies. It is also best to teach them to listen to us quickly because it can take a while to learn what's OK or not in our house. There should be some schedule already set up with the grooming before we get the dogs to know how often we will be brushing them. If the dogs are getting brushed too often without bathing, they will probably get lots of knots in their fur, which is not fun for them or us! With the backyard, we should decide if there's a particular area that is OK for them to go potty when it may rain outside and then another part for sunny out. When they can go outside, we should also decide where the best place to play with them will be because our backyard may or may not have lots of grass for them to run around in! You can get so many different foods from a pet store and even at your local grocery store. You can choose a variety of toys for them to keep them busy all day. On a side note, if there are any children in your house, make sure they know how to handle them. They can be very rowdy at times, and little kids might not know what's good or bad for their bodies, so it would be best that only older people play with them until they are older. Also, it is essential to note that these are not toys. They can be harmful if mishandled or in the wrong way, so make sure you know their purpose before using them because you don't want anyone getting hurt! You must be a responsible owner and know your limits. They are brilliant and know if you are mad at them, so never get angry when training is essential. They also learn very quickly when training because they want their food! Aside from this, they are a great companion, and they make for some great cuddle buddies. They are reliable, and you can always trust that they will be there for you. If you are looking for a great pet, this is the one you want to go with!

You need the best exercise for German Shepherd puppies to keep them healthy, fit, and, more importantly… Out of mischief! Quite the opposite is true for your fast-growing breed! German Shepherd puppies should stick to only five minutes of continuous, on-leash leisurely walking at a time, based on their age in months. So, an 8-week-old puppy can walk for 10 minutes at a time on a leash, while a 6-month-old can walk on a leash for 30 minutes at a time. However, your puppy can enjoy low-impact, gentle exercises for longer periods of time. You can play games that work on sustained growth multiple times per day safely. Instead, exercise on soft surfaces, for example: Grass Sand Dirt paths or trails Stretching of soft ligaments at too early an age, strains on young, growing joints, and carrying too much weight on their overall framework can and will harm your young puppy. This leads to problems in adulthood, which you could avoid! Remember to watch for: Panting heavily with rapid breath Lagging on their walks for longer than usual Stopping on walks and standing Lying down on their belly or side If your dog is hyperactive and displays excessive chewing and destructive behavior, they may need engaging brain stimulation to help them use their brains to engage in their environments constructively. Ideally, you also need to teach them basic commands and house manners. Start now with basic obedience training to avoid later behavioral issues. Eventually, your active, adult GSD will need at least 2 walks of 45 minutes each source. Other great ways to exercise your German Shepherd puppy include working on their balance, enjoying mental stimulation, and playing gently with toys they love. Until your vet clears your dog as having their bones fully fused this is around 12 to 18 months of age , activity should be cautious and slow-paced. Up to twelve months of age, natural free running is the best way to exercise German Shepherds. With free running, your dog is off-leash and can stop or slow as they wish. Limit and monitor on-leash walks and activity while your German Shepherd is growing. When walking on a leash, allow them to Walk at their own pace Stop and start as they please Sniff around leisurely to explore the grass, flowers, and trees Lay down, roll around, and dig in approved digging places Use a no-pull harness with a design that allows for natural shoulder movement to avoid unnatural gait development. Try this padded no-pull harness on your German Shepherd to avoid any neck injuries to her while she is young. This design also limits pulling and helps teach nice leash walking manners. The handle on the back of the no-pull harness makes it easy to grab your pup to stop them from running into a hazard or just to catch them! Read more helpful information on the benefits and disadvantages of using a harness or a collar to help you choose the right equipment for walking your new puppy. There are plenty of other ideas to try with your new baby German Shepherd. Even better? You can find so many ways to learn what your new German Shepherd puppy likes to play with for their fun and games! Exercising puppies heavily too early in life may lead to joint damage. This is especially likely in large breeds with rapidly growing and heavily loaded joints, such as your GSD. High-Impact Activity to Avoid Jumping, especially from couches, furniture, or cars Twisting such as chasing a toy that wildly moves in many directions Exercising over hard or uneven ground especially sidewalks and asphalt Keep exercise short and frequent, as this is more beneficial than long, infrequent periods of activity. The link has been copied! Is it possible to tire out a German Shepherd? This is a question many Shepherd owners have found themselves asking on more than one occasion. German Shepherds are naturally high-energy dogs and few families are physically active enough to keep up with them. This begs the question, how much exercise does a German Shepherd need? And the next one, is it possible for them to get enough? While it may not seem like it sometimes, it is definitely possible for German Shepherds to get enough exercise. Overexercising can actually instigate the hip dysplasia problems that the breed is already prone to. Thus, it is important to know how much exercise your German Shepherd should be getting — and what kind. By the end of this article, you'll know exactly how to get your pup some quality, healthy exercise. Originally, they were bred for hard work on the farm, herding and guarding flocks of sheep. They would spend hours each day keeping the flock together, which requires a lot of running. Plus, they were constantly on alert for danger and ready to neutralize threats to their charges. These high-energy dogs need plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy. For most dogs, this translates to at least 90 minutes of exercise each day. This can happen in bursts throughout the day and a wide variety of high-energy activities count. This includes taking them for walks or runs, hiking, playing fetch, agility classes, and so much more. If you're an active person looking for a running or hiking buddy, a German Shepherd is a perfect dog for you! They have the energy and endurance to keep up with you on long walks or runs. German Shepherds also make great agility dogs - they love to jump, run, and play! If you're looking for a fun way to exercise your German Shepherd and yourself! Maybe you have a hard time sitting still or concentrating on a task. You might even feel a little anxious. Whatever it is, the frustration dissipates as soon as you go for a good run. German Shepherds are like that — all the time. However, individual needs vary. These can be based on factors such as age, general health, overall fitness level and habits, and more. They may try to get your attention by barking, whining, or jumping up on you. Perhaps they pace back and forth or otherwise appear anxious. Excessive Chewing or Digging With those feelings of restlessness pushing them, dogs start to look for ways to burn off their excess energy. Unfortunately for us, this usually means they start digging up the yard or chewing on the furniture. Whatever is within a bored German Shepherd's reach has no hope for escape. Excessive Barking Another annoying method they will use to burn off excess energy is to bark at everything that moves. They may be trying to give themselves a job to do, seeking attention out of boredom, or both. Weight Gain Just like people, a lack of exercise puts German Shepherds at risk of gaining weight. This is especially true if they have free access to food. They may eat more out of pure boredom. Unfortunately, these dogs are already susceptible to problems like hip dysplasia, which is greatly exacerbated by being overweight. Thus, they need plenty of exercise too. However, they need it in shorter, more frequent doses. Playful pups get a lot of it themselves as they run around and explore their world. However, you should provide about 5 minutes of formal exercise such as a walk for every month of their age. The best exercises for German Shepherd puppies are short walks or runs, playing fetch games, and swimming. These activities will help them burn off some of their energy while learning commands and socializing with other dogs. Exercise for Senior German Shepherds As dogs age, their muscles get weaker and their joints become more sensitive. Senior German Shepherds should get at least 20 minutes of exercise a day, but no more than 60 minutes. The best type of exercise for senior German Shepherds is walking or slow jogging. Swimming is also a great exercise for a senior German Shepherd as it puts no strain on their joints. Other forms of low-impact exercise for senior German Shepherds include playing fetch and agility training. Just make sure to keep the activity level low and short, and never push them too hard. The Best Type of Exercise for German Shepherds The best type of exercise for German shepherds is a combination of aerobic activity and mental stimulation. Aerobic activity is important for German Shepherds because it helps to keep their heart and lungs healthy. Mental stimulation is also vital for preventing boredom. In addition to daily walks or runs, German shepherds also benefit from other forms of exercise, such as active games like fetch or tug-of-war, swimming, and agility training. If you have the space, it might be helpful to set up an agility course in your yard. Another great option is to enroll your dog in dog sports. If you want to really give your German Shepherd a workout, dog sports such as agility or flyball are excellent. These activities will tire your pup out both physically and mentally. You can also get dog toys that are specifically designed to be mentally stimulating for pups. These are helpful for days when you are short on time, but should not take the place of regular exercise. If you like to be active, include your pup! Take your dog hiking with you and give him a chance to explore different terrain and new areas. There are many different ways that you can exercise your German Shepherd. You can take them for a walk, run or hike. You can also play fetch or Frisbee with them. Whatever you do, make sure that you are having fun too! Dogs are social creatures and love to spend time with their family. The age-appropriate exercise chart for German Shepherds is very important. This is mainly because they will require a different amount of exercise as they grow up and grow old. As German Shepherds age, they will generally need less exercise. This is because their metabolism slows down and they become less active overall. However, every German Shepherd is different and some may still need a good amount of exercise even as they get older. There are a few things to keep in mind when exercising an older German Shepherd. First, start slowly and build up gradually. Older German Shepherds are more likely to get injured if they try to do too much too soon. Second, focus on low-impact activities like walking or swimming. These are easier on the joints than running or jumping. Finally, make sure to give your German Shepherd plenty of breaks. They may need to rest more often than they did when they were younger. They need plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy, and they love to play. Here are some of the best exercises for German Shepherds that will meet their exercise needs: 1. Walking your German Shepherd is one of the most important things you can do for them. It provides them with much-needed exercise and helps to keep their energy levels down. Additionally, walking also helps to socialize your dog and gets them used to being around people and other animals. Walking is a great way to start off with any dog, especially high-energy dogs. Start with shorter walks and gradually increase the distance as your dog ages. Running Running is also great for high-energy dogs. You can start by running alongside your dog while they walk and gradually increase the speed as they get used to it. German Shepherds are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. They are also one of the most versatile, which is why they make great family pets. However, German Shepherds are also working dogs, and as such, they need plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Running is a great way to provide your German Shepherd with the exercise they need, and it can be a lot of fun for both you and your dog. Here are a few reasons why running your German Shepherd is important: German Shepherds were originally bred as herding dogs, so they have a lot of energy. This means that they need plenty of exercise to burn off all that energy. Running is a great way to bond with your German Shepherd. Frisbee or fetch Frisbee or fetch is another fun exercise for high-energy dogs. Dogs love to chase after things and this will help them use up some of that energy. Playing fetch or frisbee with your German Shepherd is an excellent way to help them burn off any excess energy they might have. German Shepherds are especially good hiking companions because of their athleticism and obedience. Hiking is a great way to bond with your dog and tire them out at the same time — both of which are important for a healthy relationship. Hiking is another great exercise for high-energy dogs. It is a great way to explore new places and get some exercise at the same time. Just be sure to start off with shorter hikes and work your way up as your dog gets used to it. Hiking with your German Shepherd is also a great way to meet other dog owners and socialize with your pup. If you live in an area with limited trails or parks, hiking can give you access to new places to explore together. And of course, spending time outdoors is always good for your mental health. So next time you and your dog are feeling cooped up, consider heading out for a hike — you might just be surprised at how much you both enjoy it. Share this:. Sep 06, Puppies need exercise to develop healthy bones, muscles and hearts. Exercise goes a long way to help curb anxiety and behavior issues related to boredom. But you may have heard that too much exercise can be harmful. How much exercise is necessary, how much is too much, and what kinds of exercise should you be doing? As a general rule, your puppy knows best. Normal puppy play is okay, and you should never feel as though you should stop your puppy from playing on its own accord. Short walks are also okay, as long as your idea of a short walk isn't 3 miles every morning! Short games of fetch and tug are also okay. Fetch is especially hard on the body because most dogs rapidly accelerate to go after the ball and rapidly decelerate once they get to it, so good throws is plenty in conjunction with other acceptable exercises. Tug is also hard on the body, so minutes is plenty in conjunction with other acceptable exercises as well. Swimming is a great, low-impact exercise. Just make sure your puppy doesn't ingest too much water while swimming. It's also recommended that you not play fetch in the water because dogs can accidentally ingest a lot of water when retrieving toys thrown into bodies of water. Examples of exercises that are too rigorous for puppies are long hikes, running steps, long games of fetch, long walks, running, jogging, weight pull and pulling carts of any kind, wearing vests with anything over a few ounces in it for anything other than a short stroll, flyball, and inappropriate amounts of agility training. All of these things are stressful on soft, growing bones and joints and can result in hip and elbow dysplasia and musculoskeletal deformities, diseases and injuries. As a rule of thumb, don't exceed 5 minutes for each month of the puppy's age of acceptable exercise no more than twice a day. For instance, 15 minutes of exercise twice a day is ideal for a 3-month-old puppy, while 20 minutes twice a day is ideal for a 4-month-old puppy. As a general rule, you can start building up puppies to adult levels of exercise once they turn 9 months of age if they're not expected to grow over 25lbs. By a year they can be exercised as an adult as long as you properly build up their stamina. For medium and large breeds, you can begin to build them up to adult levels of exercise by 15 months and it's safe to exercise them as adults once they turn 18 months old. German Shepherd dogs will naturally travel in a cantering-lope rather than a slow walk. That means that it is imperative that you train your puppy early on how to walk on a leash by your side without pulling. German Shepherds are a powerful breed and are capable of dragging handlers who aren't strong enough to hold them back. Eliminate the possibility of a physical tug of war by relying on solid training instead. Remember, exercise is also great for keeping hip and elbow joints stabilized in German Shepherd Dogs. Many large breeds are known to suffer from hip and elbow problems later in life, but dysplasia seems to unfairly target the German Shepherd. Regular exercise can help to build muscle around joints to protect them. The more muscle, the less stress on the joint. Make sure you keep your puppies lean, well hydrated, and wait an hour or two after your puppy eats before exercise. If you stick by these rules, you lessen the chances of hip and elbow dysplasia, panosteitis, strains, sprains, ligament injuries, bloat, obesity, heart disease and arthritis. Also keep the temperature in mind and watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Stop exercise if your puppy no longer wants to play or stops to rest and everything should be fine. For the most part, you let the puppy decide his own activities at this stage. Your puppy, at this tender age, does not need exercise; he needs activity. Indoor play consists of informal activities in which you educate your German Shepherd to avoid dangerous behavior while satisfying his need to be active. At this stage, it is more about mental activity games and basic training as opposed to physical activity. This nifty little toy is excellent for young pups. Here are some low-impact games that are appropriate for a German Shepherd puppy at 8 weeks of age: Puppy the Explorer Let your GSD explore the indoors while keeping a close eye on him. This also presents an excellent opportunity to teach him to follow you. You must do this organically. Wait for him to get in his explorer mode and start walking beside him. Remember not to exceed a period of 10 minutes of exercise in the second month and stop whenever your pup shows signs of being tired. The minute mark is the maximum duration, not the minimum. Initially, your puppy will get tired after a few minutes of walking around and exploring. In each subsequent week, he will be engaged for a few more minutes. You might need to use jazz hands to get his curiosity. Once your pup starts following your palm with his head, simply tap his nose and hug him. At this point, you might be tempted to start moving your arm out of his reach to prolong the game. Follow the Wiggling Toy This is the ideal transition exercise that I would start around the tenth week of indoor play. For this, I recommend the Pacific Pups Rope Toys Set from Amazon, not just because it is budget-friendly but because you can use toys of different sizes as your German Shepherd puppy continues to grow. Once you have him sitting close to you, introduce the rope toy and place it on the floor with your hand holding onto one end. Your job then is to make sure he takes at least four steps before he catches the rope toy. Again, this is a high-engagement, low-impact exercise that builds up the foundation for medium-impact activities later on. Jaw and Bodyweight Exercises Recommended age: 3 — 4 months Maximum duration: minutes per day, twice a day Risk factor: low Things to avoid: sprints Your German Shepherd puppy is now three months old; he is building on his training according to the standard puppy training methods, and you can start to interact with him more physically. Still, his growth plates remain open, and you still need to avoid exercises that strain the joints, especially ones located around long bones like limbs. At the same time, your German Shepherd has more energy and may want to exercise more than is good for him. As a result, your role has shifted. Here, instead of letting your puppy have the toy once he follows it and grabs hold of it, you play a small tug of war with him. If your GSD is used to getting the toy after following it, he may get too defensive when you tug it. I recommended the toy set for this reason precisely. The final thing worth remembering about this game is that you always lose! You place the rope toy on the ground and let your German Shepherd puppy follow it as you move it around. Once he grabs hold of it, you use your arm strength to keep it in place. Do not try to pull it too hard. It is also essential that you gradually move up the tug of war in time and position. Gradually you can move the tug toy slightly above the ground. Throughout this, make sure your dog is on a leash because you do not want to encourage grabbing and dashing. Ultimately, you have to let your puppy win! As soon as you release the toy, he gets to have it for a while. This is also the best stage to train him to release objects on command. Make sure your GSD is on a long leash before you start this activity. Associating running with playtime is risky. A long loose leash allows you to bring him back to you gently. Be prepared to spend a lot of time negotiating with your GSD. I suggest playing tug before this because it builds trust. When you roll the ball on the floor, your puppy will get it. You cannot expect him to bring the toy to you. You simply tug the leash gently and bring him close to you. Then, you hold the ball in place. You should not pull it away. That will only cause your German Shepherd to bite down on it harder. When you have it firmly in place, your dog will try to wrestle it free but will eventually let the ball go. You can encourage this by just talking to him in a reassuring tone and using training treats. As soon as he lets go of the ball, put it on the ground and roll it. As GSDs take pleasure in high-engagement activities, the activity itself becomes a reward. In my experience, this will always be a mixed bag. Some dogs never stop giving pushback at the retrieval stage, while others let go of the ball the moment you extend your arm toward it. To start running, hiking, or any other intense workout, you should wait until your dog is fully grown. Before reaching adulthood, his bones, joints, and muscles are still in development, so they are fragile. As large dogs, they can take from 24 to 36 months 2 to 3 years to be fully grown and ready for adventures! As your dog ages, his energy will slowly start decreasing. At an elderly stage, your GSD will be more prone to joint issues and injuries. Just as puppies, old dogs are too fragile for high-impact sports. Around 1 hour of low-impact activity with some mental stimulation should be enough to keep them healthy and happy. Even if German Shepherds are generally healthy, they can still be prone to several medical or physical restrictions. At the same time, you can ask him for personalized advice to exercise your dog properly. Talking to an expert is always the best way to have accurate answers to your questions. They are also helpful to determine how much exercise he needs. Weight problems, joint issues, lack of stamina, and many other aspects can influence his requirements. Energy Level. German Shepherds are definitely among the most energetic working breeds, but some are more hyper than others. If you want to prevent your GSD from boredom and keep him healthy, your ultimate goal is to spend all of his pent-up energy at the end of the day. First of all, daily walks are essential for him to stimulate his mind and body at the same time. Now the real question is about how often should you walk with him? For high-energy dog breeds, the longer they walk, the better it generally is. An adult German Shepherd in good shape has enough energy, stamina, and physical conditions to walk all day long. However, the minimum daily requirement for most GSDs is approximately 30 to 45 minutes of walking. For the distance, anywhere between 2 and 5 miles of walking per day should be fine for the average German Shepherd. Learn more about how far you can walk with your German Shepherd! With 5 to 10 minutes of daily moderate exercise requirements per month of age, walking is still important for young dogs. A puppy German Shepherd should walk around 5 minutes per day for every month of age. For instance, 20 minutes of daily walking is perfect for a 4-month-old puppy. If you enjoy endurance sports and your dog is athletic, running can be a great way to exercise together. German Shepherds are strong, tough, fast, and generally have good stamina. With proper training and preparation, they can make awesome running partners! If you want to run with your German Shepherd, I have another article to help you out! To keep him fit, healthy, and happy, you have to find other ways to exercise. Interactive Games. You can tire out your dog quite easily with nothing else than a ball or a tug rope. The German Shepherd is very social, so playing games actively with him is essential. With some energy, time, and creativity, you have everything you need to exercise your dog. Try Some Dog Sports. Another great idea to provide your German Shepherd with proper exercise is to practice sports together. Some of the best sports for German Shepherds are agility training, Schutzhund protection , canicross, bikejoring, and tracking. Smart, courageous, and active, they are generally good candidates for virtually any activity. Thus, you should always try to include your dog in your exercise routine! Quick Tip: To make an obstacle course at your home, check out this agility equipment kit on Amazon! Free Playtime. If you are not a particularly sportive person, there are many other ways to keep your German Shepherd healthy and happy. Chasing bubbles, playing with the hose, and jumping in the snow are simple ideas to exercise your pooch. Hanging out together in your backyard can be as fun and beneficial as any other physical activity. Play With Dog Toys. Keeping your GSD active and busy is probably not an easy task. Fortunately, some dog toys can help you provide him with proper exercise. Let me share with you my recommendations for such an energetic and intelligent companion. My favorite exercise equipment for hyper dogs is the Flirt Pole. If your German Shepherd has a lot of energy to spend and a high prey drive, the flirt pole is the perfect toy for him. This accessory will help you throw the ball farther, pick it up easily, and avoid getting your hands dirty. Made for him to chew and play tug-of-war safely, it might help you to entertain him! Explore The Great Outdoors. My favorite way to exercise alongside my dog is to take him on my outdoor adventures. There is nothing better than working out, getting some fresh air, and spending quality time together. Escaping real life to enjoy nature is an excellent opportunity to have fun and do some physical activity with your four-legged companion. Furthermore, German Shepherds are excellent hiking partners. Thus, you have no reason not to explore the great outdoors with your dog. With the right equipment and proper training, you will be able to head out on trails together and share unforgettable memories! Cognitive work is as important as physical activity, especially for intelligent dogs such as German Shepherds. Providing them with appropriate mental exercise is essential to prevent boredom and care for their well-being. There are certainly better ways than others, so here are some of my suggestions to keep your German Shepherd mentally satisfied. First of all, the most important mind enrichment source for dogs should be training. By learning skills, your GSD will stimulate his brain, improve his manners, and burn off a lot of mental energy. Thus, I highly recommend you to teach him obedience commands or new impressive tricks if he is already obedient. Besides training, challenging dog toys are also great for mental stimulation. You can make him work for his food with the Snuffle Mat , let him play with the Classic Kong Toy , or give him bones to chew on. To keep your German Shepherd active and mentally satisfied, dog agility and scent work are also other ideas you may consider! In this state, your German Shepherd can develop destructive behaviors. Chewing, Digging, or Barking Just put yourself in his place for two seconds; he has to entertain himself if nobody else helps him stay busy. On the other hand, your German Shepherd can also have weight issues or be hyperactive. With personal life, work, other pets, and family, you have many things to manage. Thus, you might have to prioritize his health and well-being over other tasks. If you really have no free time, I highly recommend you consider hiring a dog walker to help you out. Short-Term Signs:. As the German Shepherd is such a fast growing breed compared to some other working breeds the opposite is actually more correct. The strain of over exercise on the skeletal make up of a youngster is often irreversible. The stretching of ligaments at too early an age, the strain on young growing joints, or the carrying of too much weight on the overall framework can and will do harm to the young puppy, and lead to problems in adulthood. Consider a young Shepherd in comparison to a 3 — 4 year old human child — certainly not ready to run a marathon even though the spirit may be willing! Should there be any chance that there is already some problem with wear on the joints of the hips and elbows, further advice would be sought as to appropriate exercise. Then, and only then, should you build the dog up to the desired level of fitness you require for whichever field you have chosen — be it show dog, trialing, agility or family companion with the adult animal — complete in growth. Up to twelve months of age, natural free running is the best form of exercise for a youngster, for a young pup, upon tiring, can easily stop when they wish, and not keep on performing because they wish to please and keep up with you! Of course you will wish to lead train and socialise your puppy, but exercise on lead should be no more than that. Maximum time walking the dog at a fast trot of a puppy up to six months of age should be barely five minutes at one instance equivalent to a short stroll around your local block or park and then rest. Puppies need plenty of rest and sleep, just like a young toddler. Certainly they can play and romp in your back yard or in their kennel run, but they will stop when they feel tired, rest and then play again. Over six months — training on lead could extend to ten minutes if you wish, but again, moderation is the best guide, and if a puppy shows an inclination to tire, then stop! Moderation and common sense are the guidelines. Allow your puppy to grow steadily and slowly, and the fun of having a companion with which you can run your kilometres upon adulthood of the dog will not be impaired by the damage you may do,by doing too much, too soon.

The Tier Haven family is comprised of volunteers, adopters, and donors who have a passion for these working breeds and all of their quirks. We are brought together by the dogs that steal our hearts while chewing the shoe collection. Originally an all-breed rescue Tier Haven shifted to focus on working dogs with the rise of breed specific legislation which was leading to larger numbers of German Shepherds, and other working dogs, being euthanized. We are rooted in Kentucky with a strong passion for enacting change within the state which has ranked last in animal welfare for many years - even if change is one dog at a time. The Tier Haven Family is committed to giving these dogs a second chance and we are all honored to be part of their paths to a better life. While the Tier Haven Family is large we are still a small organization with a core group of volunteers who keep things flowing. These volunteers are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of the working dogs who find themselves in Kentucky shelters. Tier Haven believes in individuality and giving our individual dogs the space to be dogs and move foward in a productive manner regardless of past trauma. This can take time though and Tier Haven is a dedicated no-kill organization which means we often have "long-term" residents either due to medical or behavioral needs that are on-going. As a non-profit Tier Haven relies on our adopters and donors to continue moving forward with our mission - our adopters give us the gift of space to help the next dog while our donors give us the support to ensure each dog is given the best possible care while waiting for an adopter. Tier Haven is a foster based organization which means we do not have a central facility where our dogs are housed. This means we cannot allow drop in visits and have a specific adoption process which must be followed in order to meet our dogs. It also means that as a no-kill, foster based, rescue we are limited in the number of dogs we can care for at any given time and have a separate policy for owners seeking to surrender their dogs, which you can find below our adoption process. There are many ways to support Tier Haven and a number of them you are probably already doing! A Kroger Community Rewards - select Tier Haven IV as your charity of choice and a percentage of your purchases will be donated to our group. B IGive - Simply download the IGive Button to your desktop to be alerted when your online shopping is donation eligable. C Amazon Smile - shopping through amazon smile allows you to keep your prime benefits and select a charity to support! Tier Haven is an amazon smile partner and grateful for all our amazon smile donors. Use member to be placed in our team and have your purchases benefit the dogs. G Monetary donations can be sent via Paypal to Tierhavenrescue gmail. Adoption Policy Tier Haven requires an adoption application to be completed and processed prior to meeting or adopting any of our dogs. As a completely foster based organization Tier Haven relies on the application to help ensure that adopters are meeting dogs that are suitable for their household and that the dogs are meeting adopters committed to their individual needs. We do not have a central facility nor do we allow drop in visits on our foster homes for respect of their privacy and time. The application is completed via email and you may email Tierhavenrescue gmail. We rely on your application to assist in matching you with a suitable dog and ask that you provide us with as much information as possible about why you're seeking a Shepherd and your expectations for the dog. When submitting an application please contact your vet clinic and provide them with a release of information and also inform your personal references that they will be contacted. Once your application is processed you will be contacted by a volunteer to discuss potential dogs and arrange a meet and greet. Since we are a foster based group we only allow up to three 3 dogs on each meet and greet to keep it manageable for everyone. Meet and greets are often held at public locations to respect the privacy of our foster homes and they are scheduled at the discretion of the foster homes. Tier Haven relies on the adoption fee to continue helping future dogs therefore we are unable to reduce the fee for any reason. Each adoption is on a 10 day trial during which the adoption fee is refundable should the dog be returned for any reason. Even beyond our trial period we require our dogs to be returned to our care should they ever need rehomed for any reason - we are here for our dogs for their lifetime. If you have any questions about our adoption process that haven't been covered here please email them to us at Tierhavenrescue gmail. If you would like to discuss alternatives to rehoming such as training, dog day cares, and behavior management please email us at Tierhavenrescue gmail. Sponsor Meet Max Max is a beautiful Shepherd around years of age who found himself in the shelter after seriously biting someone over a tennis ball. His caregivers at the time where trying to re-home him anyways so they left him at the shelter to be euthanized. Max is a big, stubborn Shepherd who has clearly been allowed to do as he pleases and bully his way through life. He was recently neutered and as his hormones level out he is realizing that structure isn't so bad however Max requires an experienced German Shepherd handler. Max does well in his foster home and has had no issues meeting new volunteers and friends in his foster home. He is a rambunctious boy who likes a good adventure or stirring up the play group by trying to open the gate - anything for a bit of fun! This would make him great for sport work but also makes him terrible if you think taking toys from him is a good idea. Max does wonderful being redirected onto a new toy and is a sucker for a game of two toy fetch. Max is NOT suitable for a home with children under 13 or children who do not understand respecting the boundaries of a high drive dog. Max does well with the other Shepherds in his foster home but doesn't really understand roughhousing or playing. He is a bit more stoic during yard time preferring to keep to himself for the most part. Max will interact with the other dogs but simply doesn't care for playing or doing much with the other dogs. Max has NOT been introduced to any dogs under 40 lbs or cats. To be clear, Max is a wonderful boy in his own regard and is a very smart and eager boy. He is benefiting tremendously from force free training and has some tell-tell habits that speak to a lifetime of negative reinforcement training. If it is your belief that the way to handle a strong willed dog is adverse training this is not the dog - or rescue group - for you. This is not a battle of wills that you will win and it is not worth further damaging such an eager and fun dog so that a handler can exert their dominance. If you understand how to work with a dogs motivations to help them adjust and learn then Max is a wonderful guy who is going to make a great companion. If you're interested in Max please email Tierhavenrescue gmail. Not all training packages may be available at our Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky location, please reference our pricing page for complete information on services offered. German Shepherd Puppies vs. Adults Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky recommends starting dog training as early as possible, soon after a puppy is ready to leave its mother. Puppies are capable of learning basic commands, and smart German Shepherd puppies do great with early training. Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky has adult dog training programs as well. A complete puppy training typically takes a few months. Adult dog training can take longer or shorter, depending on whether a dog needs to unlearn bad habits in addition to being trained. Working with a German Shepherd and the owner directly in the home allows dog trainers to create personalized training plans for individual dogs, as well as address any unique needs or issues. Once a dog has completed in-home training, they can take group classes for more in-depth training - Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky offers both puppy and adult dog group classes. Beginning training in the home also helps owners bond with their dogs so when the dog trainer leaves, no progress is lost. This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form after proper conditioning , when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter. Empowering Owners We empower owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times. Personalized We deal with problem behaviors on a personal basis. Environment Specific We train wherever issues tend to arise i. Supportive We support owners in the off-hours when training is "not in session". Involved We work with all members of the household. Satisfaction Ratings Our high client satisfaction rating sets us apart from competitors. Also, be consistent about rules - establish at the beginning, for example, whether or not your dog is allowed on the couch. An energetic dog with little to no exercise can become a destructive, disobedient dog. Training is a great way to give German Shepherds the mental and physical stimulation they need. Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky has developed training programs for puppies and adult dogs alike based on positive reinforcement. German Shepherd training with our in-home option is entirely possible. All Sizes. All Ages. The Dog Training Elite Difference Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky uses modern training methods focused on positive reinforcement and bonding between dog and dog owner. Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky never resorts to the use of punishment to help dogs unlearn bad behavior. The difference becomes clear when comparing a dog that is trained out of anxiety and intimidation vs a dog who truly desires to please from the inside out. The Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky training theory is mostly based around classical conditioning, also known as the Pavlovian method or respondent conditioning. In its simplest form after proper conditioning , when an owner says "sit," their dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Through a combination of commands and an electronic collar, dogs learn to follow commands at once. Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective. Ready to turn your dog into a loyal and loving companion? I want to subscribe to your mailing list. Submit Thanks for submitting! Doodle What? Hi everyone, thanks so much for coming to check out our website. There really aren't enough lovely things I can say about these amazing dogs. The perfect family companion for young and old and everyone in between. They are loving and funny, loyal and energetic. Most people are aware of the origins of Labradoodles, they were created with a purpose, and that purpose was to develop a breed that had the service dog capabilities of the Labrador combined with the hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle. And so the Labradoodle was born. They are continuing to prove themselves as amazing assistance, therapy and service dogs but have also become a beloved companion animal for many different types of owners. Growing up on a dairy farm I have always had a passion for animals big and small. Now as an adult with a family I love to share that passion with my two boys and husband. With my breeding program I aim to produce amazing, quality puppies with good health and wonderful temperaments. Please contact me for any questions you might have. The love and devotion the labradoodle has for their human friends is simply amazing. The Australian Labradoodle was bred to be a companion and guide dog. Through diligent breeding practices, always-keeping temperament a top priority, the breed has developed as being one of the smartest most intuitive breeds of all time. A combination of the high intelligence of the parent breeds. You can't buy loyalty, they say, bought it though the other day. You can't buy friendships, tried and true. Well, just the same I bought that too. I made my bid and on the spot, Bought love and faith and a whole lot of happiness, so all in all, the purchase price was pretty small. I bought a single trusting heart, that gave devotion from the start. If you think these things are Not For Sale Buy a brown-eyed puppy with a wagging tail. Your Labradoodle's devotion to you is unmistakable. The Australian Labradoodle is very intuitive, sensing when you need extra attention. Labradoodles have high intelligence The breed is very easy to train. They love to learn new things and excel at an amazing pace. Labradoodles make excellent performance dogs, such as agility, guide dogs, assistance dogs and more. They're unique connection to their human companions make them yearn to be near their people. The Australian Labradoodle is the true family companion breed. Labradoodles are allergy friendly They mostly have an odour free non-shedding coat, making the labradoodle the most popular choice for those that are allergic to dog hairs. The non-shed coat means that you will not have dog hair on your furniture, carpeting and clothes. Their coat will require some grooming, you can easily learn to do this, and most folks find great pleasure in doing so. Labradoodles love water A fun dog to take on outings having to do with water, boating, lake swimming, beach going and such. They have often been reported running through the sprinklers with the children. Their love of water can sometimes lead them to mischief, playing in a water dish, climbing into the shower or tub. Labradoodles have distinct personality traits Like people, labradoodles differ from puppy to puppy. Some will be more mellow, they are happy to be near and do whatever you are doing at that moment. Some are a perfect match for folks with a less active lifestyle, others are very active and busy. It is important that you discuss your lifestyle and activity level with your breeder. The more information you can give the better. Your labradoodle breeder will know which puppy will be the perfect match for your family and lifestyle.

Color The German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix almost always has a black and tan coloring, just like both their parent breeds. Temperament The German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix has a strong personality and is certainly suited to those who have experience with large dog breeds. That being said, these pups are loyal and loving, bonding to their owners and making an excellent family dog. They can sometimes be aloof with strangers and other pets when they are younger, but with the right socialization this can be fixed. With both parent breeds historic working breeds, it is no surprise that the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix is an active and energetic dog. This is one of the reasons they are not recommended for first time dog owners. These pups love to be outside and love to play games. The perfect companion, they love to be near you and like to please. Known Health Issues One of the main reasons for breeding the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix was to eliminate health problems that their parent breeds face. While this certainly happened, these dogs are still prone to some health concerns. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. Elbow Dysplasia — this is a common condition in large breed dogs. It can be caused by different growth rates and can cause lameness. It can be fixed with surgery. Bloat — this affects both parent breeds and is potentially fatal. You need to know the symptoms of it. Feeding your dog smaller more frequent meals instead of one big meal can help to reduce the risk. Degenerative Myelopathy — this is a progressive disease of the spinal cord that can result in hind leg paralysis. There is no cure but there is treatment. It can be helped with intensive physical rehabilitation. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parent breeds and will not crossbreed if there is a chance of passing on any severe issues to offspring. Of course, you should always double check the back of the food packet to see the exact amount of a certain food you should be feeding your dog based on their weight. Smaller, more frequent meals will reduce the risk of bloat. Therefore, they may be prone to aggressiveness or destructive behavior if they are not properly socialized, trained, and cared for. Contrary to their appearance, the German shepherd rottweiler mix can be quite affectionate. Mostly, you will hear this dog bark only when they perceive a threat, are trying to alert you to something, or feel the need to protect you. Your dog can be trained for watchdog and guard dog duties in addition to their natural propensity for watchfulness, and their appearance alone may be enough to scare off potential threats. The German shepherd rottweiler mix can be a good choice for a service dog. This breed is intelligent, skilled at learning new commands, and large enough to be an effective mobility or medical service dog. Although the Poodle is the national dog of France, they actually originated in Germany over years ago where they were commonly used as a duck hunter. Their curly coat protected them from the elements and they were bred for their excellent swimming skills, high intelligence, and incredible retrieval skills. The Poodle comes in three sizes — Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Throughout history, this dog breed has served many purposes. From living in the lap of luxury as companions to nobility to working out in the field as a valuable hunting companion to entertaining people in circuses around the world, the Poodle is right at home. Although they are more popular as a companion dog, the Poodle still maintains their athleticism and working dog instincts. Poodles are known for their intelligence, cheerful disposition, and sensitive nature. They are versatile dogs that make great family companions. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Due to their sensitive nature, they tend to be a better fit for older children who understand how to approach and interact with a dog appropriately. These dogs prefer peace and harmony in the household, so very young children that are too loud or rough can stress them out. The Standard Poodle also tends to be quite energetic until they are about two years old and may be prone to knock over small children in their excitement. Standard Poodles also tend to make great watchdogs and have some protective instincts. Without proper socialization, they can become skittish, nervous, and wary of strangers. Making sure any puppy is socialized early and often helps them grow into a confident, well-rounded dog. Standard Poodles are highly adaptable dogs. Their energy level tends to make them better-suited for larger homes with room for them to run. But, they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they receive the exercise, mental stimulation, and affection that they need. They tend to do well in most climates. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to very hot and very cold weather. These dogs are in-tune with their owners and thrive on human companionship and affection, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Poodles are a relatively healthy dog breed, but there are some potential health concerns to be aware of. Because of their larger, barrel-chested body type, the Standard Poodle is also at risk for bloat. Responsible breeders will screen and test their stock to ensure the genetic propensity for breed-related conditions is not passed along to the puppies. Poodles are highly intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please their owners. They are highly trainable, pick up things quickly, and are a good fit for owners of any experience level. Because they are sensitive and in-tune with their owners, they respond best to consistent, positive training techniques focused on rewards and praise. Poodle coats are curly or corded and come in a wide variety of colors. Although Poodles are known for their low-shedding, hypoallergenic coats, their coats still require a lot of maintenance. Keeping your Poodle in a short clip can help reduce daily maintenance, but still requires regular professional grooming every four to six weeks to maintain it. A longer coat requires daily brushing in order to prevent matting in addition to professional grooming every four to six weeks. Regular professional grooming often helps with this as nail trimming should be done monthly, at least, to keep nails from growing too long. Dental care for dogs , like brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day, is essential to protecting them from painful dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. You, your dog, and your groomer will thank you for it! Who knows? If you ensure these experiences stay positive, they could even become a bonding time that your dog enjoys. These are high energy dogs that require a good amount of exercise and mental stimulation every day in order to be happy and healthy. They love to stay busy and may enjoy running with you, going for a swim, taking trips to the dog park , hiking with you, and more. They also tend to be a good fit for several dog sports, such as agility, dock diving, obedience, flyball, tracking, and more. A fully-grown Standard Poodle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. They can be slightly smaller than the usual as the Standard size is denoted by being more than 15 inches tall at the shoulder. A Standard Poodle generally lives years. labradoodle puppies san luis obispo - Dog acne is inflammation of the lips and the skin of the muzzle, which can appear as red bumps or pimples on the skin. Acne may also occur due to furunculosis, which is when the hair follicle under the skin also known as muzzle folliculitis and furunculosis becomes painful, infected, and inflamed, often filled with pus. This occurs when short hairs on the surface of the skin break and are pushed below the skin surface in the follicle. In both these cases, there is trauma to the tissues, and it can create a chronic condition in which secondary bacterial or fungal infections can complicate the process. This condition is fairly common in young, short, coated breeds of dogs. Symptoms of Dog Acne Dog acne most commonly appears on the bottom of the chin, skin around the mouth, and lower lips. It can look like red bumps, hairless areas, and swelling of the muzzle. As the condition progresses, the bumps can become infected, grow, ooze, or drain fluid. Causes of Dog Acne Although the cause of dog acne is often unknown, possible factors include: Skin damage from rough play or rubbing the face on a rough surface Itching and rubbing triggered by an underlying skin allergy Age most dogs with chin acne are between 6 months and a year old Short hair breeds, such as Boxer, Doberman Pinscher, English Bulldog, Great Dane, Weimaraner, English Mastiff, Rottweiler, and German Short Haired Pointer Dog acne is unique in that typically the only area of the dog affected is the muzzle. In many cases, the cause of acne is unknown. Some possible causes are localized trauma from rough play or rubbing face on carpet or on rough surfaces. Some pets itch and rub from underlying skin allergies that affect many parts of the body , and this can complicate or cause the initial acne flare. How Veterinarians Diagnose Dog Acne It is important to schedule a visit with your veterinarian if you believe your dog has developed acne and is exhibiting any of the above symptoms. Your veterinarian will want to rule out other conditions, such as: Demodicosis : A type of mange that is typically diagnosed through an examine of skin scrapings under a microscope. Ringworm : In its early stages this fungus resembles acne, so your veterinarian will pluck several hairs for a culture. It typically takes 10 to 14 days to determine whether there is a fungal infection. Puppy Strangles : A skin disorder that appears in puppies and can resemble acne. Typically, your veterinarian will do a thorough examination and ask for history regarding diet, treats, supplements, and home environment your vet may ask about the types of dishes used for pets or whether other pets are in the home. Some pets can have a contact reaction to plastic bowls. Also, it is possible that contamination of bacteria or yeast can hide in micro scratches on plastic dishes. Your vet may also take skin samples to look for secondary bacteria, yeast, or Demodex mites and possibly order a dermatophyte fungal culture. A bacterial culture may be taken if the acne shows signs of draining to identify the type of bacteria. In rare cases, a biopsy may be performed to check deep disease, unusual lesions, or cases not responding to therapy. Treatment of Dog Acne Treatment of dog acne can include medication, dietary changes, and behavioral therapy. Your veterinarian may prescribe topical or oral medications to reduce inflammation and fight any bacterial infection, if necessary. Medications can include: Anti-inflammatories Antibiotics Antifungals Your vet may suggest behavioral therapy to help your dog avoid injuring the area from rough play or rubbing their face on rough surfaces. Your vet may also recommend how to properly clean the infected area to prevent secondary infections. If your vet finds that your dog has an underlying allergy, they may suggest diet therapy, supplements, and allergy medications prescription or over-the-counter. Recovery and Management of Dog Acne Most dogs with acne recover with proper treatment but do require management, which may include preventing recurring trauma, using topical medications during flare ups, and long-term allergy management if necessary. Some severe cases can result in scarring and can be prone to lesion recurrence. Behavioral modification to limit contact with rough surfaces or rough play can help limit hair breakage. Keeping the chin area clean and dry can help prevent secondary infections. Will dog acne go away on its own? Because the follicle becomes inflamed when the broken hair is pushed deep under the skin, dog chin acne usually requires some form of treatment. The treatment may be mild to significant depending on the individual case. Some dogs with a deep skin infection pyoderma may require several months on medications. Is dog acne contagious? Most often dog acne is not contagious. If there is a secondary bacterial or fungal infection, the chance of spreading the infection is minimal. VINcyclopedia of Diseases. Doerr, Katherine DMV. Featured Image: iStock. I am using the gel the Vet prescribed, will the acne scars heal? And will they be visible after they heal? Overview Acne is common in some dog breeds, the Boxer included. Many wonder what causes this and there are actually 2 elements at play. Pimples develop when short hairs are irritated. Though, hormonal imbalances are thought to be a mature contributing factor as well since most dogs develop this during puberty 5 months to 1 year is the age that this is most common as the Boxer matures. While it tends to go away on its own in time, it should be treated since: 1 It can cause scars 2 Big pimples on a Boxer dog can actually sting quite a bit and also cause pretty intense itching 3 Without treatment, pimples can keep popping up until a Boxer reaches maturity the 2 year old mark The combination of the pain and itching can cause a puppy or dog to scratch at the area or rub his face against a surface like carpeting… And this just causes more irritation and exasperates the problem. There are steps that you can take to solve the problem and to help to prevent scarring. Making Sure it is Acne It is important that your vet perform the proper tests to ensure proper diagnoses, as this can be confused with a few other skin disorders. Other health issues can appear to be canine acne and should be ruled out. This is a form a mange and a scrapping of the affected skin on your Boxer should be done. The material scraped off should be examined under a microscope to rule out this possibility. Ringworm is not actually worms. It is a fungus type skin infection. Small hairs should be plucked out and a culture will be run to rule this out. This is not common, but should be ruled out. This looks very similar to canine acne. Dogs with this have a poor appetite and weakness. If your Boxer shows these symptoms and has not yet been checked for this, it is highly recommended. Treatment for Dog Acne If acne is indeed the correct diagnosis, your vet is on the mark. A gel containing benzoyl peroxide is used. An owner must take care to not use too much. Dogs are very sensitive to this and using more than is prescribed will not help, but will do more harm. A topical antibiotic should be given to prevent secondary infections. If swelling is moderate to extreme, topical steroids should be applied to help with that issue. In chronic cases of canine acne with Boxers, cases in which the acne will just not go away long term low-dose antibiotics and sometimes steroids should be given, in pill form. Once acne is under control, minor cases of chin acne on the Boxer can be treated with Sogeval Douxo Chlorhexidine 3-Percent PS Pads , which can be used daily. Scarring This is a bit tricky, because the possibility of scarring will depend on how deep the acne is and how chronic it is. Do be sure to never "pop a pimple" as this will not only cause your Boxer a lot of pain but will open the area for infection. It is the secondary infections which would be the main cause that leads to any potential scarring. For this reason, either topical antibiotic solution or antibiotics medication in pill form for chronic cases should be given. There has been some pleasing results with dog owners who use Calendula. This is a concentrate made from the Marigold flower. It has been shown to help with healing and scarring in many cases. You can find this at a health food store, vitamin store or in the Boxer Dog Specialty Shoppe mentioned above. You would put drops into 1 ounce of warm water. Mix well. Using a cotton ball, apply this 2 times per day. While canine acne is not uncommon in the Boxer breed, it usually lessens and sometimes goes away completely as the dog grows and matures just like people. Do please make sure that your vet checked for other possible causes and then do make sure that antibiotics are being given. Lastly, using Calendula is very safe when applied as stated above , it will most likely help with healing and should help with scarring. You May Also Be Interested in:. Boxers are prone to acne, especially during their adolescent stage. Acne in Boxers typically appears on the chin and muzzle area, where hair follicles become clogged with excess oil, dirt, and bacteria. This can lead to the formation of small pimples, pustules, or blackheads. The exact cause of acne in Boxers is not fully understood, but genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, allergies, and certain environmental factors can contribute to its development. Symptoms of acne in Boxers can include redness, inflammation, swelling, and occasionally, discomfort. In more severe cases, the pimples may become infected, leading to the formation of abscesses. At home, you should keep the affected area clean and dry. Gentle cleansing with a mild, veterinary-approved cleanser can help remove excess oil and debris. Although it may be tempting, avoid squeezing or picking at the pimples, as this can worsen the condition and lead to further infection. If necessary, your veterinarian may recommend topical treatments or, in severe cases, oral medications to help reduce inflammation and control any bacterial infections. In order to prevent acne, it is vital to maintain good hygiene practices, such as regular bathing with appropriate veterinarian-recommended shampoos and avoiding contact with potential irritants. It is caused by an overgrowth of Demodex mites, which are microscopic parasites that naturally inhabit the skin of dogs. While these mites are normally present in small numbers and do not cause any issues, an overpopulation can lead to skin problems. Demodectic mange in Boxers typically occurs in two forms: localized and generalized. Localized demodectic mange is characterized by the appearance of a few small, well-defined patches of hair loss, usually on the face or legs. The skin in these areas may become red, inflamed, and scaly. Generalized demodectic mange, as the name implies, is more severe and can spread to larger areas of the body, leading to widespread hair loss, thickened skin, sores, and secondary infections. The exact cause of demodectic mange is not fully understood, but factors such as a weakened immune system, genetic predisposition, stress, or hormonal imbalances may contribute to its development. Demodectic mange is more common in young dogs, including Boxer puppies, as their immune systems are still developing. In adult dogs, while some may have no underlying disease, demodicosis can occur as a result of immunosuppression due to drugs or systemic disease such as cancer, malnutrition, or hypothyroidism to name a few. Therefore, dogs with adult-onset demodicosis should have a detailed physical examination and full diagnostic workup performed to identify a potential underlying disease. Evidence has indicated that successful treatment of an underlying disease may contribute to remission of demodicosis in roughly half of affected adult dogs. Diagnosing demodectic mange involves a skin scraping or biopsy to identify the presence of Demodex mites. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the condition. Mild cases of localized demodectic mange may resolve on their own or with topical treatments, such as medicated shampoos or ointments. Generalized demodectic mange often requires more aggressive treatment, including oral medications such as anti-parasitic drugs or antibiotics to control secondary infections. Regular follow-ups and ongoing monitoring are necessary to ensure the mites are effectively controlled and to prevent recurrence. Pyoderma Pyoderma is a bacterial skin infection that can occur in Boxers, and often develops secondary to allergic dermatitis. Boxers with underlying allergies, such as food allergies or environmental allergies, may have compromised skin barriers, making them more susceptible to pyoderma. Insufficient cleaning of skin folds can also contribute to the development of pyoderma. Moreover, Boxers with weakened immune systems or certain medical conditions may be more susceptible to developing pyoderma. The symptoms of pyoderma in Boxers can vary depending on the severity and location of the infection. Typical signs of pyoderma include skin redness and inflammation, and small, pus-filled bumps on the skin which can rupture, resulting in discharge or crusting. Your Boxer will likely experience itching, leading to scratching, licking, or rubbing at the affected areas. As pyoderma progresses, hair loss or thinning may occur in the infected regions. If the infection becomes severe or there is a secondary yeast infection, you may notice a foul odor. If you suspect your dog has pyoderma, consult with your veterinarian immediately. Your veterinarian will assess the severity of the infection and may recommend diagnostic tests, such as skin scrapings or bacterial cultures, to identify the specific bacteria involved. They may recommend antibiotics, topical treatments, and proper skinfold hygiene. Skin Fold Dermatitis Boxers have adorable wrinkles and skin folds, but these areas can be prone to irritation and infection. Wrinkle and fold dermatitis is primarily caused by the combination of moisture and heat. The folds create an ideal environment for bacteria and yeast to thrive, leading to irritation, inflammation, and infection. Keeping the skin folds clean and dry by regularly cleaning and drying them with a mild, vet-approved cleanser. Another great way to help prevent this issue is to make sure your Boxer maintains a healthy weight in order to reduce skin fold friction. Boxers with wrinkle and fold dermatitis may exhibit the following symptoms: Redness and inflammation. Rottweilers Doberman Pinschers Any dog can develop acne regardless of breed, and other factors include stress and damaged hair follicles, similar to ingrown hairs. Bulldogs and other dogs with wrinkly skin are more likely to develop acne because bacteria become trapped between skin folds, creating the perfect environment for pimples to bloom. If you own a young dog of the above breeds, preventative measures such as a healing balm are a good idea. Not getting rid of the cause of the problem only makes it come back as soon as you stop using the dog acne medications.
