Many a dog owner has played with their pup until they themself were exhausted and, much to their chagrin, their pup was still raring for more. As puppies, this can be the same for English Bulldogs but, as a brachycephalic breed, they do have their limits. This especially goes for activities like running and jogging. Similar to all breeds of dogs, English bulldogs need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy. When it comes to running and jogging, however, they do have their limits due to several factors. Yes, they can run, or jog, by your side, but for very short distances and under the right circumstances. They are also prone to joint problems, especially their knees and hips, and running or jogging puts a lot more pressure on these joints and can hurt them even under normal conditions. Most English bulldog experts agree that they should only be allowed to run around for 30 to 40 minutes, and less on a hot, humid day. More than this and you risk that they will dangerously overheat, have difficulty catching their breath and cause damage to their joints, including their hips and knees. There are exceptions to the rule, of course. If your English bullie buddy is a fully-grown adult with minimum health problems and the temperature outside is moderate they may be able to run around a bit longer without any risks. This would be something that you, as their dutiful and loving owner, would need to evaluate and decide on your own. This is a question that must be answered on an individual basis. That being said, 30 to 40 minutes is the advised amount of time to exercise your furry buddy so, for example, if you want to take them on a short jog or run at a moderate to slow speed simply make sure that you go as far as will get you back to your home in 30 to 40 minutes. These are malformations of the hip and elbow joint that can make it difficult for English bulldogs to walk and move around, let alone run or jog. Furthermore, as they get older more severe joint problems can arise as well, such as degenerative spine disease. Running and jogging can exacerbate these problems significantly, causing much pain and discomfort for your beloved pooch and the possibility of expensive veterinary visits too. They include; The Weather. Too hot and they will overheat quickly, too cold and they will get a chill just as fast Their Age. The Distance. Running or jogging at a moderate to slow pace is recommended, especially when you consider how quickly English bulldogs can overheat and also that they have very short legs Their Overall Health. Like everything else we talked about this depends on several factors. What you need to consider is that English bulldogs go through several growth phases during their first year of life. If they are allowed to run or jog indiscriminately, it can cause permanent damage to many of their joints and lead to lifelong problems and pain. That includes their knees, hips, shoulders and other joints. Their heart and lungs are also developing and running or jogging can have a detrimental effect on these vital organs too. Which is worse? That being said, we recommend not jogging or running with your English bulldog or, at most, only engaging in this activity once in a while and only if your buddy is an adult in good health. There are many different activities that your English bulldog boo can do with you safely and still have a fun time. Here are a few toys that you can use to play with your bulldog bud and help them get their daily dose of exercise. These are great for tugs-of-war and fetching! American bulldogs less so, however, as American bullies are larger with longer legs and somewhat fewer overall health problems than both their English and French counterparts. I recently reserved an English bulldog puppy. He was born 4 days premature by C-Section and has 7 other littermates. His mother is a red and white, kc registered family pet and his father is a kc registered red and white stud dog who participates in shows. My puppy opened his eyes around 2 weeks old and started walking around 3 weeks old. Fast forward to now, he is 6 weeks old tomorrow. When we saw a video of him walking at 3 weeks old, he seemed to have some weakness in his back legs but we passed it off as normal because he had only just started trying to walk. And for bulldogs this can be a little more difficult than with other dogs. However, developing an effective exercise plan for your dog is perhaps easier than your slobbering cuddle buddy will let you know. Over exercise Exercise is important, and since this post is about exercising your bulldog, you may wonder why I am mentioning over exercising. After all, can you actually over exercise a dog? Yes, you sure can. However, a casual walk around the block may be more suitable. For english bulldog puppies, while they are a bundle of energy, a walk around the block may still be a little too much. Understanding over exercising is even more important to bulldog puppies who go through multiple critical growth periods where severe and even permanent damage can occur as a result of over exercise. How many minutes a day should my bulldog work out? Routine is good for bulldogs, and much like developing routines in eating habits to control overeating, an exercise routine as a puppy will help your bulldog keep their heart and muscles strong while limiting damage to their knee and hip joints. Limiting playtime before you encourage a slow-down period for your dog can go a long way to teaching your dog about exercise. For example, 30 minutes of playtime outside for an adult before bringing your dog indoors to slow down is a great way to manage an exercise routine. And after bringing your dog inside limit play times to about 10 minutes every couple hours if your dog is aggressively running around and playing. Low Impact Exercise As you can guess, taking your dog to a dog park, or going for a jog around the lake every day is probably too much for your dog. This means focusing on low-impact exercise that may not always mean running around. First, if you know your bulldog will be running around, you will want to consider the ground. Will your dog be running on cement? Crushed mulch? Wood chips? Or, grass? Softer, and more absorbent, ground is better for your bulldog. Bulldogs love to cuddle, gnaw, and roll around with their toys. Providing toys that will encourage your dog to move around, slow down, and roll around can be helpful. Bulldogs love companionship and are one of the friendliest dogs on the planet. Introducing a pal to bum around with is a great way for your dog to get some exercise and companionship. Whether you have other pets at home, or schedule play-dates, having a friend to roll around with is a great way to get exercise and keep your bulldog emotionally healthy as well. Supervision Supervision should always be considered a regular part of playtime. For example, your dog can go from playing without an issue to suddenly wheezing and limping. Remember too, that bulldogs have developed a high pain tolerance over centuries of warrior-like breeding. This means that your dog could be in pain and struggling, but not slow down. This is where constant supervision will help your dog the most. Signs of overheating, limping, and labored breathing are an indication that playtime is over for now. If the concern does not appear to be serious, or has only just begun it is okay to take your dog inside for a little welcomed relaxation. If you see signs of overheating such as an abnormally wobbly walk, falling down in a casual stride, or passing out, then you should contact your vet immediately. Playtime for your bulldog should be fun. The focus on exercise is to develop a strong heart and strong muscles. With a little routine and fun exercise your dog is on their way to a long and healthy life. Puppy Playpen I found having a playpen to be absolutely essential with my Goldendoodle, so I am including it on this list. I used it for house training and when she was in the biting stage. It was also an excellent place for her when she was overstimulated and needed a quiet place to settle. The playpen was a positive space for her with her favourite stuffies and chews. In fact, I even served my Goldendoodle puppy her meals in her playpen so she could form a really positive association with her playpen. I never used it for discipline. Playpens come in all different sizes and shapes depending on your space. I have always used clippers for my dogs but recently purchased a Dremel. Grab a few because they make for some cute photos and toys around the house, but also stock up on things that will help when they need to chew. One thing to keep in mind when getting toys is to avoid any rope toys. Pups can eat the strings and have them wrap around their intestines — which is NOT good. So just skip them altogether. It is supposed to help transition them because it has a battery heartbeat and a pouch to make it warm. If you can, ask the breeder to rub it on his mom or the other puppies so it smells like them. Check Price Food and Water Bowls As soon as you get your Goldendoodle home, they will need to have food and water available. There are many different size and shape food bowls that you can get for your Goldendoodle puppy. There are even pet water fountains to keep your Goldendoodle entertained while drinking water. This is a very personal preference. When looking for a food and water bowl, also look at your new puppies eating style. Many people will let their Goldendoodle eat out of Tupperware for a few days until they know if they have a dog that is constantly moving the bowl around the house or one that eats very fast. If your dog is moving the bowl around the house, consider a bowl with a rubber bottom to help it stay in place more. A lightening of the coat does not necessarily occur evenly all over the coat, rather Poodle color will often hold more on the dog's ears and the thicker guard hairs. Cafe Au lait Poodles are born dark brown and change to cafe around the age of 2 yrs Blue Poodles are born black and change over by the age of 2 years Sliver Poodles are born black and change over by the age of 2 years Apricots are often born a dark shade that lightens by the age of 2 years Many owners can become confused as their Poodle takes on a completely different color as they grow. One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that there are a few distinct color coat variations. Fox Red Labradors are a rare-colored version of the Labrador Retriever. Despite this, they can be registered as purebred Yellow Labrador Retrievers , as the darker-colored coat is not considered to be a disqualifying factor. Due to their unique and certainly eye-catching color, the Fox Red Labrador continues to grow in popularity. Labrador Retrievers are known for being exceptionally sweet and are one of the most affectionate dog breeds. These dogs yearn to be a part of a family, and fit right in when joining one. In fact, Labs are considered one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. Well-socialized Fox Red Labradors tend to get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. After all, every person they meet is a potential friend that they can play with. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Despite their energy, Fox Red Labradors can adapt to most settings. As long as this dog breed has a chance to get in daily walks, go outside to run and play, and they get plenty of attention, they are content. They are not overly affected by cold weather, but they have a dense double coat. Fox Red Retrievers are also happiest when in the presence of people and they love to be with their families whenever possible. They also have a lot of energy and get bored easily. Potential health concerns to be aware of in Fox Red Labrador Retrievers can include hereditary myopathy, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , progressive retinal atrophy, heart disease, and cataracts. There is also a condition with a genetic link that can occur in young adult Labradors called exercise-induced collapse EIC. Carriers can be identified by DNA tests. Good breeding practices can reduce the risk of potential health issues and make a big difference in the health of Fox Red Lab puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances. The national breed club recommends hip and elbow evaluations, an EIC DNA test, and an ophthalmologist evaluation at a minimum. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, the Fox Red Labrador Retriever is at a higher risk of bloat. Bloat in dogs can be dangerous and can become fatal if the stomach flips gastric torsion. Labrador Retrievers are one of the smartest dog breeds and are highly trainable. Although they can become stubborn at times, they are eager to please and pick up on training quickly overall. Their energy and intelligence mean they can lose focus in training and get bored easily. However, training that is kept clear, consistent, and focused on positive rewards usually keeps them focused and responding well. Any color variant of the Labrador Retriever is ideal for beginner dog owners. Fox Red Labrador Retrievers have a short, dense double coat that is water-resistant. They shed year-round and more heavily as the seasons change. Brushing their coat a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding is usually enough to keep their coat healthy and looking great. Bathing is on an occasional, as-needed basis. Because their coat tends to protect them from the cold and they are one of the dog breeds that tend to love water , your Fox Red Lab may try to go for a swim regardless of the season. If they are an avid swimmer or tend to get into a lot of things, you may need to bathe them more often. It is highly recommended to give them a bath or at least rinse them off thoroughly after going swimming with your dog. Their nails should be trimmed once or twice monthly. This will help prevent ear infections. Proper dental care for dogs is essential for preventing the tartar buildup that lends to dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is a good start. You can also supplement your dental care efforts with dental hygiene chews, a special dental care diet, and more. Like other Labs, Fox Red Labrador Retrievers are high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for this dog. However, they will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Often, they are just happy to be spending time with you. Labs tend to have an extended puppyhood until they are around years old. They will mellow out a little, but also tend to maintain a puppy-like exuberance even in their senior years. Once they are done growing and your vet has cleared them for more activities, you can try a lot of different things. Labs are athletic and versatile dogs. They are one of the sturdy dog breeds for outdoor adventures and tend to enjoy a variety of activities. They tend to excel in swimming, running, obstacle courses, and several dog sports. Fully-grown Fox Red Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Fox Red Labs generally live for years on average. The standard recognizes three colors; black, chocolate, and yellow. Although all colors were present at the beginning when early Labrador Kennels were training and raising the dogs black was the only color accepted according to several sources. Yellow would slowly gain acceptance and would begin to appear in field trials as well as dog shows. Chocolate would be the last color to gain acceptance and it to would emerge in field trials as well as dog shows. The breed standard recognized the shade of yellow in a Labrador Retriever as ranging from a light yellow, almost white appearance to a fox red color. Many believe that the early yellow Labradors were a very dark yellow and fox red shade of yellow. As more yellow Labradors were produced a lighter yellow would appear in litters and so breeders began to try and produce a lighter shade of yellow. This would become a prevelant practice of many breeders as the fox red shade of yellow would slowly disappear from Labrador kennels and their breeding programs. Support for this can be found in examining the pedigrees of many of today's fox red Labradors. There is a significant amount of line breeding in fox red pedigrees today and one would expect to find dogs from either the Kelleygreen Labrador or Keepsake Labrador kennel at some point in a fox red lab's pedigree. Line breeding was necessary to resurrect the fox red shade of yellow through the mid 's and forward. An example of line breeding would be breeding a grand-son and a grand-daughter of one given dog together. We have been working with the fox red shade of yellow since and have done a great deal to diversify the pedigrees found behind our current fox reds. Producing a dark fox red Labrador as a breeder can be difficult or it can be relatively simple depending upon what the breeder's end goal is; either producing an all fox red litter or diversifying the fox red pedigree gene pool. A solid breeding philosophy would involve a breeder from time to time adding an outside dog to their fox red pedigrees through an outcross. That outside dog could be black, chocolate, or yellow and the resulting litter could be a combination of different colors. Breeding two fox red Labradors together will most likely produce an all fox red litter. There is nothing wrong with that, however this could lead to close line breeding in the pedigree's behind the sire and the dam. However some breeders look to improve the type and pedigree of fox red Labradors will breed with a yellow Labrador to produce a litter that may have a fox red pup in it however the majority would be dark yellow or light fox red pups. Breeders that have invested in both goals are able to produce an all fox red litter while diversifying the pedigrees of fox red Labradors. Diversifying the fox red Labrador gene pool is what makes the color difficult to breed for at times because there is no guarantee as to what shade the pups will be. Regardless of how a fox red labrador is produced the color is striking especially when the light hits the coat and you can see a sheen on the coat. When fox red Labradors are born they resemble the color of a red clay drainage pipe and then spend the next year continuing to darken or redden until they have a dark fox red coat color. All yellows darken over time and this is no different for fox red Labradors which is why there is always such a variation in them inside any breeder's program. An example of color variation in a fox red would be our Skarloey Rumajas Amber Sky Crimson Skarloey who is pictured below. Some breeders would consider him a light fox red labrador while other breeders would consider him a dark yellow labrador. Skarloey is a result of diversifying our fox red Labrador pedigrees by breeding a light fox red female to a medium yellow Labrador male. Skarloey will produce fox red pups when bred to a medium to dark fox red labrador female. The fox red shade of yellow is just the color on the far end of the color spectrum for yellow Labradors. They are a Labrador and possess all of the great characteristics of a well bred Labrador. There is not a difference other than the coat color as compared to a black, chocolate, or yellow Labrador. A well bred fox red Labrador can do all of the things that Labradors are know for. Many breeders have worked at making sure that fox reds adhere to the American Kennel Club Labrador Retriever breed standard as far as type and temperament. It is becoming more common to see a Fox Red Labrador now as opposed to ten years ago or fifteen years ago. The challenge for quality breeders to meet will be to produce a quality fox red Labrador as the demand for them grows.
