We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! At 2 weeks, puppies are still partially scooting around and wobbly on all fours. However, they are confidently walking around by 3 weeks. Between two and three weeks, they begin playing with each other and with toys. However, most of their time is still spent sleeping. For the most part, they will sleep for hours at a time. They wake up when mom comes in to feed them. Puppies will play for a few minutes and then they are back asleep again. They are rarely awake for more than 15 minutes at a time at 2 weeks. By three weeks, their periods of wakefulness is still only about 30 minutes at a time. We also will begin bottle feeding larger litters once a day when they are right around two weeks. We add a pan with pine pellets in it to the puppy pen at around 3 weeks of age. This will become their toileting area. Until puppies are 3 weeks 4 days, the pan is hit or miss with regard to toileting mostly miss. However, at 3 weeks 4 days, the idea begins to click. We scoop any poop out of the pan, but for several days, we leave the pee in there. The pellets absorb most of the smell as far as human noses go, but the puppies can smell it. We keep the rest of the pen as close to perfectly clean as we can keep it. We change the pads MANY times a day. The key to this stage of house training is for the puppies to associate their living quarters with cleanliness so that there is a clear differentiation between potty area and living area. Puppies naturally want to pee away from where they live. However, if breeders keep their puppies in quarters where everything has pee or poop, they will loose their natural instincts. Since .White Boxer Dogs Overview Regrettably, some people still believe that white Boxer dogs or puppies are the least favorable of the breed. Some will argue that those dogs born white are more prone to illness or more aggressive than the other more traditionally colored dogs of the breed. Some think that they have a different set of personality traits and will show different behavior than more traditionally colored dogs. For those of us who are lucky enough to love a white Boxer puppy.This simply could not be further from the truth. There is a lot of false information that can easily be found.So, let's clear this up by looking at the facts. While each dog is an individual and has his or her own personalty quirks, in general, white Boxer dogs will behave exactly like most other more traditionally colored pups and dogs. There is no set change in disposition, aggressiveness or any other trait. Most, if not all Boxers are comical, fun loving and expressive animals with a strong craving to please their owners. They are excellent companions, family pets and enjoy the company of their humans. A white Boxer dog is not automatically ill or blind or has eye issues.In some cases, color can go back as far as 5 generations. Both of the parents must carry the genetic code white. In every way the puppy is the same as all of its siblings…with all the liveliness, traits, and spirit that make them Boxers. A white Boxer is not an albino. Albinos entirely lack pigment. White Boxers, as beautiful as they are, may someday be accepted for conformation in AKC show events. There are breeders and people in the general public who feel that white Boxer dogs are inferior to fawn or brindled colored Boxers and have more health problems. .Recently, there has been more studies to either substantiate or dissuade the claims that white Boxers are more prone to problems than standard colors. The only claims that seem to have merit are: They are more likely to sunburn And the white Boxer like many other breeds with similar loss of pigment are more prone to deafness in one or both ears. They are not rare -Approximately 25 percent of all boxers born are white. They are not albinos — They have colored eyes, colored touch, inside of the ears, belly and bottom of the paws. They can sunburn easy — an owner should use human sunscreen on their dog if they are to be outside for more than 30 minutes — And remember that the UV sun rays CAN penetrate through clouds, so it is better to be safe than sorry. They can be deaf and this is one of the biggest reasons why most breeders do not purposefully breed for the white color. Blindness is a bit more common with the white Boxer. Some people believe that white Boxers develop cancer more easily than the more standard colored dogs ; however this is still up for debate and has not been proven. The AKC will deny registration for any puppies born to a registered white Boxer. They have the same temperament and personality as other Boxers. .They are happy, loyal, social, friendly dogs when raised in a loving, appropriate home. The white Boxer may have pigmented patches around the eyes and ears and other limited points on the body, but the Check has much more pigment and could be called piebald .A flashy Boxer is one who carries one dose of the gene. An albino Boxer dog would have no color on the skin as well; the eye rims, nose, bottom of the paw pads , and lips would be pink. In addition, most albino dogs have very light eyes. White Boxers, on the other hand, will have some skin pigmentation. Typically, the nose is black, as are the lips. Eye rims and paw pads can be black. Please note that very young Boxer puppies often have pink noses. So, if you have an all white Boxer newborn puppy and the nose is pink, this is not an indication of abinism. Over the of the next few weeks, nose color should come in. Final nose coloring may be fully black or spotted. Many wonder if a Boxer puppy is born deaf or becomes deaf. With all puppies, the ear canal stays closed and will open between days 10 and .A white Boxer - if he is to be deaf - will progressively lose his hearing. The cause of the deafness connected with the white color is the absence of pigment cells in the inner ear resulting in a loss of sensory hair cells at about 6 - 8 weeks of age. For this reason, potential puppy buyers may want to wait until the 10 week old mark, at which time it should be clear as to whether or not the Boxer has his hearing. The shortage or absence of pigment cells is also the cause of the white coat and un-pigmented third eyelids called the haw. In general the more pigment in the coat the lower will be the risk of deafness, but all predominantly white dogs are at risk of being deaf, not just the Boxer breed. Please note however that not all white dogs are white because of a lack of pigment cells. Some breeds such as the West Highlands and Poodles just have extremely diluted pigmentation; they have a full complement of pigment cells, so are not at risk of being deaf. First off, Boxers are the absolute best family members imaginable. Luke and I gained our first boxer family member in .From the very beginning, we were hooked! We then gained our newest addition, Diva and boy does her name fit her well! We were overjoyed with our family fur-members and wanted to provide joy to other families. That is when we decided we wanted to breed Boxers and bring love and happiness to other families, just as our Boxers brought love and happiness into ours. Our family continued to grow, as did our happiness and joy! We now have 8 boxers and one spayed boxer mix. All are our fur-kids come first and foremost! Diva and Sergeant had their first litter in .Since then, we have learned so much about the breed and about producing healthy puppies. A lot of thought and research goes into each and every breeding. In the early part of , we started showing. This was such a new experience for us, but we enjoyed it so very much! Bailey was our first girl to show and she had a blast! Her face would light up when trotting around the ring. She obtained her International and National Champion Title that weekend and we were so very proud of her! Remington and Diva were a little hesitant at first, but ended up doing very well by the end of the weekend. By the 4th run, they were so excited to get out there and perform! It was not hard to see that this was something he enjoyed so very much! We couldn't wait to get them back out there for the next show! In September of , we went to 2 shows! The first show was a UKC show. Captain and Bailey competed and had a blast. Captain obtained his UKC Champion. Bailey obtained all of the points needed and is now only waiting for her competition wins. We cant wait to call her a UKC Champion too! Captain gained his National, International and Honors Ch. At only 3 months old, Dawn made it to Best of Show during this show! It is the best feeling in the world to see the smiles on their faces and their eyes lighting up! They all had a blast! Captain obtained his Honors Bronze Champion Title. Both girls did well. They both won first in each of their classes and Dawn won Reserve Best of Breed in all four shows. We were unable to attend due to puppies being at home, but didnt want the girls to miss out on a great weekend of showing! Dawn got first in class for all three shows. Benelli got first in class all three shows. Benelli also got Reserve Best Female in two show and Best female in one show. For being at a show without mama and dad, the girls did so good! Im so proud of them and a special thanks to Angie for talking the girls! We look forward to the upcoming shows and we are so very excited!! Benelli gained another competition win and many points to add towards obtaining her UKC Champion Title! I have no doubt she will obtain the rest of the needed points and competition win needed to obtain her title soon! The girls did great, even with the judges all wearing masks! Harley won Reserve Ch x3 shows. Captain and our friend Junior handler Alicia Hood won x1 best Junior class! They both did great! Can't wait until the next show! Alice was able to obtain a daughter and two sons of Dorothy's Star "Chinookie" directly from Dorothy Crider. He was the first dog Alice trained. Alice's Khemo Von Snowcloud U. The other Line was brought to Fairfield by the Davis family that Alice incorporated. Davis told Alice he got them from the Lookout Kennels in Texas. In fact, he brought back all that they had as they were retiring. Alice was fortunate to have 5 of these special dogs. All of them were white. Within 4 generations Alice also found that several of the other dogs had been written about in the books telling how the German Shepherds had been developed. Example - Ch. This line produced the largest shepherds ever seen, often exceeding lbs. Crossing them with the dogs Alice had gotten from Dorothy Crider, produced larger dogs, both male and female, than the original ones from Dorothy. Alice continued to bring in new dogs as needed, always keeping in mind the size, looks and temperament. Tango was sired by White Shadow Crider. Six Years with Allied Studios. They won many trophies and placings as well as High Shepherd in trial. They were the first dogs that Alice had trained. Some of these have been written about in the books on the Foundation Shepherds. Many other Snowcloud Shepherd owners have put Obedience Titles as well as Champion ratings in other clubs on their dogs. However, they must be AKC registered. The White German Shepherds of Snowcloud Kennel are snow-white with black nose, dark eyes, lips, and some have black nails. They grow to be exceptionally large. I have had the honor of owning several. The males usually mature from 29" up in height and the females 25" up, depending on the care they receive after leaving our home. Their bone structure is huge. They have tall straight ears and beautiful shaped heads. They are an over all balanced dog. They are very gentle and loving to their owners and make excellent family dogs. They have proven to be very good with children and are especially protective of women and children. They make very loyal watch dogs and traveling companions as well as home companions. They are excellent in Obedience work and are so intelligent that training and showing them is very rewarding even for a novice. We will diligently continue to provide folks with good, healthy and stable shepherds. How we acquired the Snowcloud Bloodlines.Richard Horton wrote the following letter.Richard is Alice Horton's son. The white German Shepherd Dog has endured a long and difficult battle to earn its place as a purebred dog breed worldwide. It takes a deliberate and consistent breeding strategy to reliably produce all white German Shepherd puppies. Historically, white puppies would sometimes pop up amongst a litter of puppies bearing the more common black and earth tones. White German Shepherd Genetics Our understanding of the genes which control canine coat color is increasing all the time. But even as we unravel the unique DNA of other famously white dogs think of the Dalmatian, and the white English Bulldog , the white German Shepherd remains stubbornly mysterious. There was a time when all white German Shepherds were thought of as albinos. Nor do they carry the extreme white piebald gene which gives Dalmatians their white base. At the time of writing, in , the most widely accepted theory is that German Shepherds all have one spot in their genetic code which acts like a switch for white and non-white. But if they inherit the white gene for from both mom and dad, then all else in their genetic code is forgotten, and they are white. Because they need to inherit the white gene from both parents, it is described as a recessive trait. Only a pair of white German Shepherds are certain to have a litter of all white puppies. A careful breeder who understands German Shepherd coat color genetics can reliably produce a litter of white puppies by mating two white German Shepherd dogs. A solid white German Shepherd adult dog can range in weight from 60 to 85 pounds, with adult males outweighing adult females. As adults, the white GSD will stand anywhere from 22 inches to 26 inches high at the shoulder. Like the rest of their pedigree, the most common eye color for a white Shepherd is dark brown. However, coloration can range from a lighter amber to a dark mahogany color. Every so often, a pure white German Shepherd with blue eyes will be born. However, this is a rare trait attributed to expression of a recessive gene for eye color. A long haired one is even rarer! Long haired German Shepherds of every color owe their coats to a recessive gene for long hair. Historically, long haired GSDs were considered a genetic fault. Long haired dogs lack a waterproof, insulating undercoat, so they were unsuitable for working. But they are famously good-tempered and devoted, so modern long haired German Shepherds of every color are gaining popularity as pets and companion dogs. A German Shepherd with short hair has the same insulating undercoat as any German Shepherd, regardless of coat color. These dogs make for hard-working dogs who excel in guarding, herding, service, search and rescue, police, military and protection jobs. Their white coat helps to distinguish flock guard dogs from darker-haired predators such as coyotes and wolves. Grooming a White Shepherd In terms of coat care, the short haired white German Shepherd has the same basic grooming and coat maintenance needs as any short haired German Shepherd. All German Shepherds shed a lot, but white hair has a special talent for showing up against floors and furniture. They also shed out their short undercoat during the warm season. Frequent brushing and grooming can help keep shedding localized and manageable. The long haired German Shepherd will need more detailed and frequent grooming. You will need to pay special attention to cleaning and grooming their ears. Bathing should always be done sparingly to avoid removing necessary coat oils. Excessive washing can cause skin dryness that could lead to irritation or illness, so invest in a gentle shampoo. As with any working purebred dog breed, it is important to realize right away that these dogs are not bred to be lap dogs. They demand high level of work and interaction, or they will become bored and destructive. Are White German Shepherds Aggressive? In the past, many people trained GSDs to be wary of strangers, and aggressive towards trespassers. Most German Shepherds today are still wary of new people, and take a while to warm up to them. Early, daily, consistent and continuous socialization as a puppy will give them the confidence to greet new faces and situations calmly and confidently. From 8 to 14 weeks old, have visitors around every day, and take your puppy to plenty of busy locations. These include hip and elbow dysplasia — bone malformation at the joint, which causes painful arthritis and lameness. However, there is one condition that white German Shepherds might be more predisposed to. But further research is needed to see if this is correct. Are White German Shepherds Deaf? Has anyone ever told you that white dogs are more likely to be deaf? Dogs like Dalmatians, who owe their white coat to the extreme piebald gene, are more likely to have hearing loss. Dogs with the piebald or extreme piebald genes lack these cells, so they are white, and they may have hearing loss. But remember that white GSDs inherit their white coat, by a different, special gene? That means their coat is white, but their skin is still normally pigmented, and their hearing is unaffected! How Long Do They Live? The average German Shepherd Dog lives to 11 years old. There is no evidence that this would be any longer or shorter for a white GSD. Overall, ensuring your White German Shepherd puppy enjoys a lifetime of good health rests on choosing a breeder who invests in health screening for their sire and dam. But their striking looks are gaining legions of fans among a new generation of GSD lovers.
