Petra arrived at the kennels in Warrington when she was just a puppy and she has remained there since May .The cute pet, who is said to love chasing tennis balls, has now spent a staggering days in kennels. Until now, staff at the RSPCA kennels have been unable to try to find her a forever home due to court proceedings but now they've finally been given the go-ahead, the Liverpool ECHO reports. The three-year-old has spent limited time living inside a house and will make a "wonderful companion" for owners who have experience of large breeds and nervous dogs. If you find Petra, there will be a tennis ball - or ten - in sight, which is why we feel an activity like fly ball would really suit her. Even though she has her fears, the amount of love she has to give is endless. Centre staff have also been getting her used to travelling in a car. Her new owners will be given support and guidance to help with this. The centre is looking for an adult-only home with no other animals for her, ideally with people who have had experience of large breeds and dogs of a nervous disposition. Been a loving family pet but due to both owners being taken seriously ill has not been out of the house for quite a few weeks — he is becoming stressed and starting to bite his fur. We now need to give this boy a new home asap. The assessor said he was friendly, wanted to play and seemed happy to have company. Zeus has never lived with children but has lived with another dog. Not socialised much with other dogs out in the park. He is neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped. Pepper Pepper is around 5 yrs young she is spayed and is good with Children, dogs but unknown with cats. Excellent on lead. She has never shown any aggression she just loves her cuddles. She is vac. Murphy Murphy is currently in foster with another dog and has been an absolute pleasure for his fosterer. He is enjoying lots of nice walks meeting people and other dogs and has also learnt to accept people coming into the home. He has adjusted well to living in a home and only cries a little when first left. He happily sleeps in a large crate at night. He has had his ears and teeth cleaned no problem. He has a brilliant cheeky character but can be a little stubborn sometimes as all gsd's can be, his recall is excellent and he is very obedient when out and off lead and constantly checks that he is doing things correctly. Murphy is epileptic but this is well controlled by a good diet and inexpensive medication. Because of lack of exercise, his back legs were weak but they seem to be getting stronger now but the muscle still needs to build up a little more. His fosterer has been getting him to run up an down little hills to help with this. Murphy has learnt that a cat doesn't play like a dog does now and his fosterer is confident to leave him on his own with the cat and both her dog's. Murphy will try to rough play with the hoover. He is going to need a home with an experienced person who will keep up the boundaries he has been given but he is a lovely dog with a lot of love to give. Blue 3 year old entire handsome white German Shepherd who is currently in foster care due to previous owners lack of confidence to control and train. Unfortunately Blue suffers from fear aggression and tries to nip and frighten anyone he first meets but the foster carer can already see improvement day to day and Blue is beginning to trust humans again and be more relaxed and settled within their home. With patience and time preferably the only pet and no children Blue should make a fabulous pet for an experienced GSD home. Micro-chipped, vaccinated and medically fit. Saber Very fit and lively 10 year old, entire. Loves to play and cuddles. Unfortunately due to family constraints Saber is living in a very confined space and left for long periods of time. Juno One year old entire dog who just loves to play. Very affectionate, has lots of energy and eager to please. Would suit a home with older children but not good with cats. Molly can be a little timid on first meeting but is a very friendly girl once she knows you, her current owner hasn't had the confidence to socialise her properly, but she is fine once she has met the other dog and has lived with another, cannot live with cats and older children only. She has a good level of basic training, but she hasn't been off lead very much so further training will be needed there. Molly travels well, is happy left for short periods and is a good girl at the vets. Can you give Molly the home she deserves? Jez - Cheshire Jez is 7 yrs neutered and vaccinated. Jez hasn't had a great life so far but is now in foster care where he is learning to be a dog again, he is beginning to play with the other dog in the house, but would be best as the only dog in his new home or with an older calm female, he is good with cats but has never lived with children. Jez is very loyal to his owner, and his training is coming on lots in foster care, Jez has a hip problem which is treated with tablets, but has had a full medical and has no other health problems. Important health checks for puppies and dogs It is very important that you check the health of your puppy or dog before you decide to adopt or buy. A responsible seller will fully understand the need and therefore fully cooperate with assisting in the checking the health of the puppy. Majority of sellers will agree that you can return the puppy or dog within 48 hours should they have any health issues. Mypetzilla recommends taking your puppy or dog to the vet for a health check as soon as you take them home. It is also worth ringing the vet to confirm everything beforehand. Vaccinations must be up to date Check the puppy or dog is up-to-date with their vaccinations. All puppies should have received 2 vaccinations. The first vaccination should be given between weeks of age and the 2nd vaccination should be given no more than 2 weeks later when the puppy has reached the age of weeks. Older dogs may also need booster vaccinations and this is normally recommended by the vet. It's important that you check with the seller what vaccinations the puppy or dog has had. It's worth noting that puppies should have had their first vaccination before they leave their mother. If the seller has not provided a vaccination plan, then it will be your responsibility to make sure you arrange both vaccinations 7 days before letting your puppy go outside. Check the puppies have had their treatment for worms and fleas It is recommended that all puppies should be wormed at the age of 2 weeks and then receive another treatment at the age of 5 weeks old. Before the puppy leaves the seller, they should have had more worming treatment at 8 to 12 weeks of age. Check to see if the puppies have been socialised It's necessary that the puppies have interacted well with their puppy litter and have been raised in a home environment around other adults, children, and general household life. Puppies that don't receive this kind of training and development from a young age, may go on to develop behavioural problems later in their life and become difficult to train. They may likely develop temperament issues and will find it difficult to adjust to family life. Kennel Club registration? It's worth considering to check the documentation and phoning the Kennel Club to verify the registration. Check the Puppy has been microchipped This is a very important point and is also law abiding. From the 6th April , it is required by Law that all dogs over 8 weeks of age are microchipped and that the keeper's details are registered in their name and are kept up-to-date. You must make sure you receive the microchip documentation with the chip number and then arrange to change the microchip details into your name. Veterinary fees can become extremely expensive and it's important that you have the correct level of cover beforehand. Examples of exercises that are too rigorous for puppies are long hikes, running steps, long games of fetch, long walks, running, jogging, weight pull and pulling carts of any kind, wearing vests with anything over a few ounces in it for anything other than a short stroll, flyball, and inappropriate amounts of agility training. All of these things are stressful on soft, growing bones and joints and can result in hip and elbow dysplasia and musculoskeletal deformities, diseases and injuries. As a rule of thumb, don't exceed 5 minutes for each month of the puppy's age of acceptable exercise no more than twice a day. For instance, 15 minutes of exercise twice a day is ideal for a 3-month-old puppy, while 20 minutes twice a day is ideal for a 4-month-old puppy. As a general rule, you can start building up puppies to adult levels of exercise once they turn 9 months of age if they're not expected to grow over 25lbs. By a year they can be exercised as an adult as long as you properly build up their stamina. For medium and large breeds, you can begin to build them up to adult levels of exercise by 15 months and it's safe to exercise them as adults once they turn 18 months old. That means that it is imperative that you train your puppy early on how to walk on a leash by your side without pulling. German Shepherds are a powerful breed and are capable of dragging handlers who aren't strong enough to hold them back. In dogs with patellar luxation, the patella moves luxates outside of its assigned groove when the knee is flexed. This movement can cause discomfort and may eventually lead to arthritis. Many pets will skip or run on three legs when the patella is out of place. While some cases will correct themselves, in more severe cases the patella remains out of place. In mild cases, joint supplements such as fish oils and glucosamine or anti-inflammatory medications are used to control pain and prevent arthritis. In more severely affected dogs, surgery may be recommended. This causes pain and limping occur as the bone breaks down. In some cases, pain can be controlled with medications. In severe cases, surgery to remove the head of the femur may be recommended. Symptoms include visible debris, redness, odor, head shaking, and scratching. If any of these signs are noted, take your dog to the veterinarian for an exam. In most cases, ear infections can be resolved by cleaning the ear and with topical medications. Toy Poodles develop ear infections more often than most other breeds. This may be partly due to Poodles having long ear canals with excess curly hair to trap in moisture and debris. Trimming not plucking the hair from the ear may help reduce the incidence of ear infections. Dogs with chronic or recurring ear infections frequently have allergies that should be addressed. Dental Disease Dental disease is one of the most common conditions seen in dogs as they age, especially in small breeds like the Toy Poodle. Dental disease occurs when bacterial tartar and plaque build up, leading to inflammation of the tissues around the teeth—and eventually to tooth and bone decay. Daily tooth brushing with a dog-specific toothpaste is the best way to prevent dental disease, though some diets, treats, and chew toys also help prevent plaque and tartar. Tracheal Collapse Tracheal collapse occurs when the trachea commonly called the windpipe flattens. This happens due to weak cartilage rings or the sagging of a membrane along the trachea. Most cases are treated using medications, but in severe cases where breathing is impeded, surgery may be necessary. Toy poodles are likely genetically predisposed to tracheal collapse. When on walks, use a harness instead of a collar, as pressure on the trachea can cause further damage. The condition causes a deficiency in a protein called the von Willebrand factor, which is necessary for platelets to stick together and form a clot. In dogs that are deficient in this protein, the blood may have difficulty clotting, which can lead to bleeding from the nose, vulva, bladder, or gums. Additionally, dogs with this condition may bleed for a long time after trauma or surgery. If there is concern about VWD, a screening test may be performed. This test measures how long it takes for a small cut in the mouth to stop bleeding. If the time is longer than usual, additional testing is needed to confirm VWD. Because some dogs with VWD do not have notably prolonged bleeding until later in adulthood, blood levels of von Willebrand factor can be measured to help with diagnosis. Most veterinarians recommend testing for VWD prior to any planned surgery, including spays, neuters, and dewclaw removals. Puppies should be fed a diet formulated specifically for puppies or designated for all life stages.
