We are proud preservation breeders which means we protect, promote, and preserve the high standards set forth by the French Bulldog Club of America and the AKC breed standard. We mainly breed for ourselves and for our AKC show colleagues in order to better the breed and present the best specimens that meet or exceed the breed standard. Due to the nature of how Frenchies are bred by artificial insemination from a reproductive specialist and then a c-section for delivery , the cost of a Frenchie or an English Bulldog is a lot higher than other puppies that are bred and whelped naturally. There is a reason that the AKC will not allow these dogs to represent the French Bulldog breed, so beware of those breeders as well. We require all of our new puppy families to pick up their puppy from us and either drive them to their forever home or they can be flown in the cabin with their owner, but they NEVER will go via cargo. We also will not sell to families outside of the US for the protection of our bloodlines. I only breed show quality dogs that have gone through rigorous genetic and health testings. I also study pedigree to make sure the Dam and Sire have compatible bloodlines prior to planning a litter. Since puppies develop and change drastically, it is for that reason that Frenchie Show breeders will hold a litter for at least weeks or longer prior to making their Show picks. My other advice is do NOT get puppy fever and just buy any dog you see on those online advertisements, newspaper ads, puppy find, pet stores etc. You could end up with a lifetime of problems just because one was immediately available. I waited 3 long years before I got my first Frenchie, but I had to be patient and be willing to say NO to a lot of puppies that I saw. Our pups come pre-spoiled, extremely well socialized, fully vetted, de-wormed and have had their 1st vaccines and are micro-chipped. Whether you are looking for a show dog, or a pampered pet, please make sure whomever you pick is a responsible breeder that has done health testing and breeds sound temperaments and correct conformation according to the AKC breed standard. At least you know when you are at the shows that these dogs are bred to standard and if you ask around you will find reputable breeders that do health testing to ensure you are getting a quality puppy. Unfortunately this question can not be answered with a simple yes or no. The length of the muzzle of a French Bulldog is purely for esthetic purposes. The length of the muzzle is largely determined by supply and demand. Breeders usually only breed the type that the buyer is looking for. In the end they all would like to give their puppies a new home. But when a dog because of this physical appearance has a higher rate in abnormalities, it must be absolutely clear for all dog lovers that this can not be the goal. A short muzle on its own is not the cause of breathing difficulties. The origin of breathing problems starts deeper in the throat, not visible from the outside. Even muzzle length or size of the nostrils is not always conclusive. Nevertheless the selection must be made towards more open nostrils and a clear stated muzzle from a side angle of view, because it certainly has a relation to the rest of the abnormalities. When a CT scan is made of a French Bulldog, we can see that the amount of tissue in mouth and nose area is the same of that in a dog with a muzzle that is of normal length! All this tissue is compressed like an accordion, it has to go somewhere in the end… This results in a palate that is too long, teeth and jaws that are not adjusted properly to the short skull shape. Also the tongue and nose cavities are not adjusted. This has a lot of influence on the breathing, and causes less quality of life. Left a Shepherd-like dog, on the right a Pug. The first symptom of trouble is making sound when breathing. Unfortunately that does not automatically mean that dogs with silent breathing can have no breathing difficulties. Some breeders tried to breed the slanting nose back to a distinct nose length and wide open nostrils. They immediately noticed the difference! Researchers encountered that when the muzzle length became shorter, the risk of BOAS became significantly larger. BOAS was only seen in dogs with a muzzle length wich was less than half of the length of the skull. Obesity and a thick, short neck also were factors in enlarging breathing difficulties. How long or short should the muzzle be? Anatomy plays a great role in this, it is important for other organs to fulle develop. In a short neck organs are compressed, which results in a shorter trachea. The neck takes care of balance in the head. The neck can only function properly when it is free in movement. It is common for French Bulldogs that they are not flexible at all, the neck can barely move. Head and neck almost become one. This dogs can not move freely, wich is obviously a burden. Breeders must ensure a fully opened trachea and a normal esophagus, sufficient widht in the throat cavities and in the larynx. The palate must be free of excrescent soft tissue. The tongue must not be too long and thick, and the nostrils must be open without tapering on the inside. Just looking at muzzle length does not mean the rest of the elements are correct. It is obvious that a snubbed nose with narrow nostrils and a short, wide neck should be avoided as much as possible. It is a difficult topic. It can be confusing, but it is definitely much debated. The future of the French Bulldog breed lies in the hands of breeders, judges, breed clubs and owners. A French Bulldog is a dog that is supposed to have a short muzzle, but at the same time he must have tons of energy and resilience. A muzzle is a very important sense organ and it must be recorgnized as such from a side angle view. Puppy buyers also have the power to turn the tides. When you are visiting a breeder, ask what they are doing to improve the overall health of the breed. Ask what the breeder undertakes to insure his animals are absolutely suitable for breeding. Only when there will be more attention for this problem we can solve it! It is hard to imagine how a French Bulldog must feel when it must fight for every breath of air. Luckily more and more people are searching for a healthy French Bulldog. I hope that many breeders will see the benefits of health testing and sharing information! If they are not approved, you will not get an FCI pedigree. However, there are also countries with FCI pedigrees and countries such as America and Canada the latter two operate independently where health is not taken so seriously and breeds with small very short dogs, the nose as flat as possible and without a small tail and the majority have breathing problems and many hereditary disorders. Although we receive a lot of requests for puppies from America from private individuals and from breeders who want to breed healthy French Bulldogs and would like to be supervised and we are very happy with that. Less visible to the layman is that due to breeding with problems, vitality has deteriorated. We have already started testing for hereditary defects including X-rays of the back with our second French Bulldog, but we have expanded the tests much more. The health results and pedigrees are listed for each dog on their own page. We are very proud of what we have achieved since in terms of appearance and health. We only use FCI recognized colors so no prohibited colors. There may still be FCI banned colors in the back lines. In principle, the mentioned colors do not occur in the French Bulldog and there is a suspicion that these entail health problems. Finally, a French Bulldog does not have a long tail genetically and cannot inherit this either. For example, the kennel clubs of Great Britain, Canada and America are not affiliated; they operate independently. However, the FCI and the American, Canadian and English kennel clubs have made mutual agreements, among other things about the recognition of stud books. Two healthy people can also have an unhealthy child and not everything is immediately visible and can be reflected in old age. Also the breed standard should be adjusted to a slightly longer body more space for the organs and the back that is not compressed like a yo-yo , nose should be slightly longer with wide nostrils and should be in a normal position so that the dog can breathe and the larynx also gets more space. Like we already mentioned, fluffy French Bulldogs are still hard to come by despite the huge demand in recent years. Why is that? Frenchies that carry only one LH gene have regular short coat, but they are still valuable for breeders. If such a Frenchie is bred to another carrier of the long hair gene, they are likely to produce fluffy puppies, although the chances of that are still quite low. Long-haired pups are only guaranteed if two visual fluffy French Bulldogs are bred together. Their size depends not only on genetics but on their lifestyle as well how many times you take them for a walk, do you have a backyard, do you have other dogs or pets and even the food that you give them. Male Frenchies are usually stronger and stockier than females, they have bigger heads and wider chests. Female Frenchies tend to be a bit smaller and less muscular. On average, they weigh about 5 lbs less than males: their adult size is around 25 lbs, while boys can go up to 30 lbs. They are insanely affectionate making them the perfect companion dogs, they just want to spend every minute of their time with their owner. They are extremely friendly with kids and other animals too; they love basically anyone they meet! Thanks to their easy-going nature, a fluffy Frenchie will adapt to your lifestyle very quickly no matter where you live. Even though fluffy Frenchies are most popular among French Bulldog breeders, any responsible dog owner can become the parent of one these amazing dogs. It is thought that the Poodle originated in Germany as far back as the Middle ages. Taking its name from the German word pudeln, which means "to splash in water". The Poodle was once exceptional at retrieving ducks from the marshes. The versatile Poodle is among the most intelligent and capable of breeds. It is easily trained and remains a popular family pet to this day. Our Poodles are all from Standard lines and are regal and calm, though they love to play. They bark to alert when someone arrives at the house, but are not barkers without purpose. Standard Poodles love to be near their family and are wonderful with other dogs and children. We produce solids, parti-factor or abstract, as well as Parti Standard Poodle Puppies! Our Parti Standard Poodle Puppies range from red and white, apricot and white, brown and white, black and white, and sable parti puppies. Our Poodle Dams and Sires are AKC Registered from excellent bloodlines and have obtained extensive health clearances prior to being bred. All three varieties have the same build and proportions. We do not currently offer miniature or toy puppies. Poodles can be black, red, white, apricot, brown, cream, Cafe Au Lait, silver beige, silver or blue, and may be a combination of these colors. Poodles carry the color patterns brindle, sable, ticking, abstract, tuxedo, parti, and phantom. They require brushing a few times a week, plus clipping and shaping every months. This longer clip though does require more frequent brushing at home to prevent matting of the Poodles curly coat. According to Slate Magazine, Poodles were originally used as foul hunting dogs. An unshorn Poodle's thick coat could weigh it down in the water. With the bottom half of its body shaved, the animal was more buoyant and could swim more freely. The long mane and hair around the chest were left intact to keep the poodle's vital organs warm in the cold water, and owners also kept the hair around the joints to protect them from cold and injury and to help prevent rheumatism. Shaving the hair around the face left the poodle's mouth and eyes free so it could fulfill its retrieving responsibilities, and tying the hair on a poodle's head into a "top knot" also kept hair out of its eyes. Owners eventually tied these knots with brightly colored ribbons to help them identify their dogs from afar. Daily walks are a must if you don't have a safely enclosed area for them to run freely. They love games and many are attracted to water and love to swim. As with any dog, socialization and training should start while the dog is still a puppy and continue throughout its life. The combination of white and any of those colors above make up for Parti Poodles. Parti Poodles may not be as common as compared to standard Poodles but some of their color combinations are so rare. When Parti Poodles are still young, the blending of their coat colors primary vs. As the dog ages, the coat color on specific areas of its body will be finalized until they reach adulthood. If you try combining two parts poodles, the color combination of the litter would be completely different from each other. The cause of these color variances in this dog is due to the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor MITF gene. Below is some other variance of multi-colored Poodles, each of which has distinctive characteristics which identify one from another. Some of the ones listed below are recognized in some events initiated by AKC. Interestingly, a Poodle with this genetic makeup will consistently pass on one copy of the "sp" allele to all of its offspring, making it a hereditary trait that can be passed down to the next generation. Then, the rest of its body is covered in the secondary color. Mismark poodles are also called by breeders Abstract poodles. Another way to distinguish these two is through their skin color. The skin Mismark poodle, on the other hand, follows the color of its primary coat. Multi-Patterned Poodles Colors These are Poodles having multi-colored coats or more than 1 of the accepted colored color patterns. At present, this type of breed is not yet accepted by American Kennel Clubs. Tuxedo Poodles Think of a Poodle in a tuxedo suit. This is how their coat is patterned giving them that distinctive look. Their special markings may be placed on different parts of their body. You will notice the markings in areas such as their neck, chest, and legs. These are spots or dots one would see on a Poodle's white coat. These posts are black or darker in color and can be regarded as dirt. This is the reason why breeders do not like to use dogs with ticking. The litter could end up with coats looking dirty. Origins of the Poodle According to history, the Poodles came from Germany. Originally used as hunting dogs, Poodles are considered one of the favorite pets these days. Over time, poodles were bred into smaller-sized and distinctive coat coverings. The French royalty even considered it a favored pet. Contrary to popular belief, it is the Parti Poodles that have a rich history. According to an article published by Huxtable the Poodle, Parti Poodles are often depicted in paintings and art during the ss. Even the first ever dog book published in the United States of America has contained information about Parti Poodles. Since most people preferred the Poodle in solid color, breeders would no longer register litters that are two-colored. There is no exact publication supporting where the name came from. There are some write-ups that state that Poodles were bred in the s by French people. The breed had gained a strong following across the European border. Its popularity crossed over the United States and other Asian countries too. The popularity of the Parti Poodle in the 18th and 19th centuries In the s and s owning a Parti Poodle meant that you were either part of the French royalty or a social aristocrat. It has become a status symbol. People with wealth and power are seen owning this dog breed. During this time, European aristocrats would use Parti Poodles during hunting season. Given the popularity of these dogs and their association with the rich and famous, Parti Poodles earned its place in the world of arts, and literature during this period. The decline of the Parti Poodle in the early 20th century In the early 20th, there were other dog breeds slowly taking the spotlight. Breeds such as German Shepherd, and Labrador Retriever have gained popularity causing the decline of the Parti Poodle. Both German Shepherds and Labradors are excellent hunting dogs which were much preferred. The decline in popularity was worsened by the onset of wars where breeding Parti Poodles became uncommon. The resurgence of the Parti Poodle in modern times Despite being on the brink of distinction, Parti Poodles managed to gain back its popularity again. Several factors helped its resurgence. Credible breeders will choose which parents to use following the desired coat pattern. Ethical guidelines are what we practice at Stokeshire. Dogs also undergo genetic testing to avoid any medical issues being passed on to their litters. But how the litter will look is undetermined as their coat colors and markings will be different from one another. At present, particolored ones are still restricted from joining conformation shows or events organized by AKC. Although, they can still be registered in obedience and agility shows. UKC is considered the second-largest kennel organization in the United States. How Long Do Parti Poodles Live Life expectancy is years Some Parti Poodles may live shorter or longer depending on their genetic makeup, diet, exercise, and overall well-being. Some may be susceptible to health risks such as: Hip dysplasia. So keep in mind- evenif you want "just a pet"- that with a much smaller gene pool than other colors; it is doubly important to buy from health tested parents. Check for OFA hips and Cerf eyes at the least or you will end up with a lot of vet bills and heartache. With our parti color poodles, we are striving to produce Standard Poodles that are exceptional members of their breed and more specifically, their coat color. My hope is to help revive this coat color and make them the equal or better to their solid colored counterparts. The parti poodle has suffered from years of culling by show breeders and many have now sadly fallen into the hands of puppy mills. This coat pattern has been around since the origins of the breed, and have been quietly born in champion show lines for generations. Not associated with any health problems like in white boxers etc. Multicolor poodles have always been AKC registerable and you can compete in all performance events with them. All puppies bred here will be AKC registered and many of our original dogs carry the Vintage name to distinguish them in pedigrees from my solid line. A parti poodle is a poodle of white and another color. There are several distinct patterns: the tuxedo, spotted, and abstract all refer to a poodle that is white and another color. That color can be black, brown, red, apricot, creme, silver, blue, grey, cafe-au-lait, or silver-beige. Parti poodles are usually more than half white with colored spots. They can range from almost a solid white with just a few spots of color to the more colorful tuxedos. Tuxedos look like a poodle dressed for a party. They have white on the legs and a white collar that may or may not go completely around the neck. Tuxedo-colored poodles also have white on the belly that should extend up to the chest. Some tuxedos have colored legs almost to the feet and others have white all the way up to their back. Abstract poodles have limited white markings and are almost a solid colored dog. The most common abstract poodle marking is a simple white mark on the chest. White splashes of color may also occur on the face, head, chest, and feet. Abstract poodles sometimes have a white chest and white feet that look like they have been dipped in paint. Ticking marks are the small spots found within the white parts of the dog. Dogs may have little to no ticking. Ticking on legs may look like small spots or be large enough to look like stripes.
