This is very important because you do not want your dog to just be obedient when everything is calm. You want, even need, your puppy to be obedient when the everyday distractions happen. With that independence comes the desire to run away from you, run around you, play keep-a-way and just generally terrorize your life. We get lots of calls from owners of puppies this age. They all want to know if we can take their dog now for training instead of at the usual months of age that we usually require for hunting dog training. This is very hard, even for professional trainers. But that is almost always a mistake since Bubba will decide to make a game out of not coming to us. Getting your puppy to come to you There are some techniques to help with this matter. Sometimes this is a good time to start treat-training your dog on HERE. This is a short-term fix that we will not continue for long, but it can sometimes help to get us through the next month or two. Introduction to live birds This week we introduced Bubba to a live bird. We do this using a pigeon with the flight feathers pulled out. The pigeon can walk around and flap its wings, but it cannot fly. We ultimately would love to see the puppy chase down the bird, grab it in their mouth and bring it to us or at least prance around with it a bit. For some dogs, this can take a bit of encouragement the first time. But generally, once the puppy grabs hold of the bird, we see their whole demeanor change. This was the case for Bubba. Once Bubba picked up the pigeon, she pranced around the yard with her tail high and a spring in her step. She was so excited and proud of herself. This is a great response. Introduction to gun fire As I stated in last weeks post, we do not want to rush the introduction to gunfire. We have never had a dog we have raised and trained become gun shy and that is because we introduce gunfire is a very slow and painfully methodical way. The first step is that the dog or puppy is in a box on our dog trailer. While in this box, our other dogs are getting marks in the field. The gunners for these marks are anywhere from yards away from the dog trailer and they are using primers or starter pistols. The puppy is hearing these shots, but they are a long way away and are muted by being in the dog trailer. Our puppies hear these shots for weeks, or months before they ever hear anything closer. This is our first introduction to gun fire. Bubba was exposed to this last week and will be every week for a while before we move anything closer to her. Learn more about introducing your dog to gunfire. Continuation of assistant marks Bubba will continue to get assistant marks most days from now until she is done her training. The marks will continue to increase in distance and complexity but all our marking scenarios for our afternoon sessions involved gunners out in the field throwing marks for Bubba. Final thoughts on training for your week-old Labrador puppy You are really in the thick of it if your puppy is around the week mark. The next month or two will likely be the most challenging of your time raising a Labrador puppy. That will make obedience training easier and faster, but that is still a bit of a ways out. Hang in there and push through. Keep your commands and corrections firm and consistent and you will make progress with your puppy. To do this, we give her lots of opportunities to go in the backyard, and not need to hold her bladder for too long. And always give her the opportunity to poop outdoors after a meal. Potty Training By now, your puppy should have a lot more control over his bladder than when you first brought him home. Some puppies take longer than others to become fully housetrained. How much should a 12 week old puppy sleep? You might have expected that as your puppy grows, they will drop those day time sleeps. But in fact, most puppies are still spending more of their time asleep than they do awake. Temperament differs between breeds, but there are some common traits that all 12 week old puppies will share. They are all still likely to be playful, curious, and excited to be around you. And one of the best things about puppies is the fun games you can play with them! Playing is a great way to bond with your pup, and a great way for him to burn some energy inside the house. Chase, tug, hide and seek, blowing bubbles and puppy massage are all great ways to play together. Lots of them are simple, and can use treats and toys from your house. Teething and Biting One thing you might not have been prepared for is the teething that starts at around 10 to 12 weeks old. Your puppy might bite during play, but may also chew to relieve pain from teething. Most biting is not related to teething. If you have small children in your home, you should teach them the best way to act around puppies. This will help to reduce the number of hard bites they suffer from. Puppy bites can hurt. And 12 week old puppies can even draw blood. This biting is often accompanied by snarling and growling. How to Minimise Biting Biting will naturally start to reduce by the time your puppy is around 4 to 5 months old. But, while your puppy is in the biting stage, this behavior can be made worse by excitement, attention, and poor bite inhibition. If you reward your puppy for biting by giving him more attention or excitable play, the biting can increase. We have a 5 step plan to reduce biting in this article. You may want to place your puppy in a puppy zone. Squealing or yelping can make your pup more excited. You can also train your puppy not to bite. You might have noticed we included three meal times in the routine earlier. These are not times to give your dog a third of their daily rations — they are the times for the leftovers from the part of the day! Hand them some kibble whenever they lay down calmly, keep their paws on the floor instead of jumping up. The window for socialization actually starts to close at 12 weeks. But, it can last until 16 weeks in many puppies. Make sure you are still taking your 12 week old puppy out to new experiences, locations, and people. This will help to reinforce the socialization you have done up until now, and keep your puppy from becoming fearful in new situations. If you are struggling to lift them, you might want to invest in a harness, or puppy backpack! So, make sure they experience as much as possible even now that they are 12 weeks old. Puppy Health and Care There are three main areas we want to focus on for the health and care of your puppy. These are vaccinations, feeding schedules, and exercise needs. But, there is also general care to think about. Generally, in the UK, puppies will receive their second combined vaccine at 12 weeks old, and will need no more. In the USA, puppies often receive their third combined vaccine, a rabies vaccine, and possibly a Leptospirosis or Lyme vaccine at 12 weeks. But, they may also need a fourth combined vaccine at 16 weeks old. This vaccine schedule may differ between practices. So, speak to your vet to find out exactly when your puppy will receive his last vaccine. You can read more about puppy vaccines here. Exercise Needs Puppies need less exercise than you might think, even though they can seem full of energy! Some breeders suggest 5 minutes of exercise per month of age — so a maximum 15 minute walk outside for a 12 week old puppy. It can strain vulnerable growing dogs, and lead to issues like hip dysplasia. So, make sure to avoid over-exercising your puppy. Especially if you have a large breed dog. Save to Pinterest The Stages of Puppy Growth and Development Month by Month The following are the stages of puppy growth and development, starting at birth and ending when your dog reaches adulthood. The Neonatal Stage 0 to 2 weeks This is the newborn puppy growth stage that lasts until two weeks of age. At this developmental stage, puppies are blind and deaf. Expect puppies at this point to sleep almost constantly and their mother will take care of everything, keeping them warm, feeding them, and keeping them clean. The Transitional Stage 2 to 4 weeks At this puppy growth stage , they will start to open up their eyes and respond to sounds, light, and movement around them. You will also notice a puppy at this point starting to get more mobile, although they will still tend to crawl instead of walking. They do, however, have enough strength to stand up, but will stumble a lot. A puppy in this developmental stage will just be starting to recognize their siblings and mother. Lab puppies open their eyes at about two weeks old. By this time, Labrador puppies will have their eyes fully open and most will be at least partly open. Ears open at this point too and your puppy will begin to hear. Period of Awakening of Senses 3 to 4 weeks At this period , a puppy develops various senses rapidly. They start to get fully alert and aware of their environment and may recognize you and other humans that are frequently around. The Socialization Period 4 to 7 Weeks Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings. Interactions with humans are especially important between five and seven weeks. This is also the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge. As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite. During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life. To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline. You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of human contact during this stage. If you want, you can start leash training and even teach simple commands such as sit, down, stay and come. In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder. Most vets suggest that new outings should wait until they are fully vaccinated. We rub the Calmeroos Puppy Toy on littermates and mom to get their scent. The Juvenile Stage 3 to 4 Months At this point in development, a puppy can be compared to a juvenile. They will be more independent and may ignore the basic commands that they know very well. If this happens, firmly and gently reinforce the commands and other training. You may also notice your pup starting to test your authority by play biting or similar actions. You can also redirect your dog to a toy that they can bite. Either can end up teaching your pooch that it is okay to fight with you and challenge your authority. The Ranking Period 3 to 6 Months When your puppy is between four and six months old, you should expect them to be somewhat bratty, showing more willfulness and independence. They are more likely to test your limits and may try to show dominance over children or other family members. If they fail to listen to you or come when called, it can be dangerous as it puts them at risk of injury when in public. It can also hurt future responses to you, making them less likely to listen. This is also when your dog will be teething, so give them toys like frozen dog Kong toys to relieve pressure and pain. Chewing behaviors will also start growing at this point so look for some safe chew toys to keep your dog entertained. This is when hormonal changes start to occur and is the ideal time to spay or neuter your pup. UC Davis published a study comparing the long-term health effects of neutering in Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers. Adolescence 6 to 18 Months After six months, your pup is already in the final stage of puppy development but is still young. This is a fun and exciting time for your pooch since they will be learning, full of energy, and exuberant. During this time, it is important to remember that even if your puppy now looks like a grown-up dog, they are still a puppy, at least in its mental capacity and emotional maturity. Work to slowly increase training and other activities. You can even work on advanced training such as agility or herding. Another option is to simply keep training them to ensure they interact in a non-aggressive and non-threatening way with other animals. It is also possible that your dog will go through another fearful period of time at some point after they reach six months. You can speed up the process with counter-conditioning and desensitization. It fits very well and is quite apt! Final Thoughts With the knowledge of how and when your new puppy will develop, you are better able to meet their needs. Provide socialization at the appropriate times and be sure to give your puppy plenty of social interactions with their siblings as well as humans and any other pets in your home. Your dog should reach maturity at some point between one and two years old with plenty of variation based on breed, Labradors are considered mature at between 2 and 2. Rowan formally Kissy from the James Bond litter is the most amazing dog. Not only is she cute as can be, she is also very smart. She was quickly potty and kennel trained. She wants nothing more than to be close to us at all times, and the feeling is mutual :. Living in Southern California, we are lucky that many places are dog friendly so we take Rowan on our outings as often as possible! Rowan has recently made followers! She loves them and they love her! With other dogs she is also very well behaved. She lays down for any dog and allows them to sniff her. Rowan has enriched our lives in so many ways. She truly has become our best friend. For future Frenchie owners, please know like with any puppy, the first few months are an adjustment period. Rowan was quite mischievous while teething, but this too shall pass!! Make sure to provide toys Nylabone or antlers as an option for chewing. For Rowan, at 8 months she was completely through teething and frapping running around like a crazy, yet funny dog Be patient, like all puppies they will learn and with training be much better. As far as breeders, BlueHaven does it right! Breeding for health over everything is the best practice and its proven in the quality dogs they breed. They care about each and every puppy that leaves. When I had questions about when to spay Rowan I received a reply within hours. We recommend them to everyone who has asked. Originally, when we listed our preferred colors, we did not select brindle, but as you can see, once we saw GiGi, we knew she had to be in our family. GiGi is very well. Now that the weather has warmed up, we are planning to visit our local dog park, that just opened last month. We weighed her last night, and she is just a few ounces shy of 11 pounds. She was 6 pounds when we received her so she has really beefed up quite nicely. Her favorite time of day is picking the kids up from school. We walk to and from school, and during our walks, she receives loads of hugs and kisses from little kids, and gives loads of kisses to them as well We are still working on walking on a leash, but for the most part, she does very well. GiGi sleeps in her kennel at night. The first few nights she was home were rough, but it has been smooth ever since. She knows when it is time for lights out, and goes right in her kennel. In fact, a few times we have stayed up too late for her, and she has put herself in her kennel. We have 4 kids, and they argue about everything under the sun, and now the constant argument is who gets to hold and cuddle GiGi first when they get home from school. At nearly 4 months old now; Pearl is doing very, very well. She had her 3rd series of shots and vet check last week and is perfectly healthy. We plan to have her spayed in February or March. Pearl has such a spectacular personality! She is funny and playful, yet sweet and cuddly. We hosted our large family for Thanksgiving, and Pearl was the center of attention. Your quality breeding and care have surely played a great role in her good health and personality. Our hearts nearly stopped when we saw their email about Toro formerly Jeff being available. He was everything we ever wanted! They did an incredible job at always keeping us informed on his progress and would indulge me in my numerous requests to see photos and videos of him as he grew! He melted in my arms and it truly felt as though he knew I was his new mom! Even Ginny said it! We just wanted to take some time to update you on Lola Candy as she just had her first vet visit this past weekend. First off, everyone at the vet loved Lola! We got many compliments on her, including from our vet. We assured her that we had known this and it had gone down from level 4 to 3 when she was still with you. We, of course, are going to continue to keep an eye on it and her growth but she said she looks healthy as can be! She is about 6 pounds currently. She also received her second DAPP shot and did very well. We have been crate training and she is starting to get better with it. We still are experiencing some occasional crying at night but nothing compared to the first week Potty training was also rough at first but we have really come to learn her schedule and create a routine so its both easier on us and her. When we first met her at the airport, she was even more beautiful in person than in the pictures and video. We love her markings and we always get comments from others about them, too. We have already gotten questions about where and who we got her from As you mentioned to us the first day we got her, she plays hard and sleeps hard! You three have been amazing to work with and we are thankful to have received Lola from such a caring and kind family. And we just love her to death! She has so much character, I often can just look at her and smile and laugh. She is very obedient, knows her name well and comes when she is called. I take her to work with me and she never cries, barks or acts out in any disorderly conduct. I have a hundred pound blue pitbull and the two of them get along beautifully. She actually dominates him at times, especially when it comes to the bone or toy. Which is funny to watch a big pitbull cower to a 25 pound frenchie. However, we do not tolerate dominate behavior and it is something we are working on with her with a trainer. She has never bit anyone or dog but at times has displayed dominate behavior to certain dogs, like barking and growling. But when it comes to people she is such a lover! And everyone loves her. The only health issues we have had with her was with her diet. We had her on blue buffalo kibble when she was a puppy and she had the worst gas! I mean it would clear a room quickly! We tried a few other brands of kibble with no avail. The gas has completely disappeared. Indigo is very healthy with a strong bone structure and lots of muscles. A lot of people think that she is part pitbull at first glance because she is so ripped! She loves playing fetch with the tennis ball. Everyday I take out to the baseball field next to my office and throw the ball for her and she brings it right back like clock work. Something I really never had to teach her, she just naturally picked this up. Loves chewing on her bone, and never anything she not supposed to chew on. It was very easy to potty train her. We crate trained her right of the bat and we were very vigilant about taking outside often when she was a puppy until she figured out the rules on where to potty. And I think we had less than a handful of accidents when she was a puppy. And none in almost a year! I am very grateful for Indigo and thank you for breeding such a wonderful dog! Thank you! He is the cutest dog ever! Every day we go for a walk and someone has to come up and tell him how adorable he is. His ears and tongue get the most attention. Winston loves everyone and everything! He has not barked or growled or nipped any anyone or anything. He is such a happy kind dog. Kids love him and he loves to lick them. He does still jump and that will scare some kids even though he really just wants to lick , so we are continuing to work on that. He is definitely not a dominant dog, he just loves to play. When the other dog wants to wrestle, Winston will just roll over and wait for his turn to attack. Winston is very active. Our 2 cats hate him but he continues to try to play with them, and they just walk away or swat at him if he gets too close. He will make you play with him no matter what you want. He takes his toys and will bump them against you. He has not learned the art of dropping a toy that much; he would rather play tug of war. He also loves to run laps in the house and will run right into the sofa cushions, bounce off, and start again. Winston is definitely not shy. If we bring him out with a crowd he will go and introduce himself to everyone and make sure he gets enough attention and kisses, then he will settle down and chill out. He does not bark very often, only when he sees someone outside he wants to visit with or if there is a noise that scares him. Winston is also a very snuggly loving dog. Like we said a few times, he loves giving kisses and nibbling a bit on the ear. He can be eating or playing with his favorite toy and you can go right into his mouth. He also loves to lay in our arms like a baby and have his belly rubbed. Every night, Winston starts in his own bed, however, as soon as he knows we are asleep, he crawls under the covers and right up where he can put his head on the pillow. Every day Winston makes us laugh. He has such a strong personality and we truly believe he does things to get a laugh out of us. We believe that whatever you did with him before we got him made him the dog he is, his parents, socializing, and all the love you showed him gave us exactly the dog we wanted! We did bring him to star puppy school and he passed with flying colors. Hopefully once he gets the jumping to stop, we can think about it again. Thank you again for everything you did with him! I am very fond of the blue French bulldogs because their coloring is so unique. As soon as I saw photos of Katie and Darius, I knew that I wanted to have one of their puppies because I knew their puppies were going to be something special. When I saw a photo of the blue fawn female from that litter, my heart melted and from that moment on Sophie was mine. Donna and Lacey were so helpful along the way. I got weekly updates and photos of Sophie so I could see how she was growing. Sophie is a very happy and healthy puppy and she is the perfect fit for me. Each time we go to the vet, our veterinarian compliments Sophie and says she has such a good conformation and is a top quality French bulldog. Going to the park or for a walk is quite an event because people stop in their tracks to ask about Sophie. She is very social and wants to say hello and give kisses to everyone she meets. Sophie is such a little clown and she has a great personality. I am the luckiest puppy owner to have found Donna and Lacey and to have been blessed with such an amazing puppy. Getting Sophie from Donna and Lacey was the best decision I could have made because Sophie turned out to be exactly the type of French bulldog that I was looking for! They answered all of my questions and were very helpful, knowledgeable, and walked me smoothly through the process. No sooner would I send an email asking a question, minutes later, I would get a pleasant response. They are even great now that the whole process has come to an end. We have had absolutely no issues with him and my vet was even pleased. My vet actually commented that BlueHaven kept excellent records of the pups while they had them. I did a lot of checking to make sure they were legit, as I did not want to be scammed out of a good chunk of money. I did a lot of online research, checked the Better Business Bureau, etc. They had no complaints against them, and I could not find any bad reviews. Not to mention, they would have given me a reference in a minute. It really put me at ease to see all the updated pictures of the puppies and gave me the sense that they were very caring. Klein is doing excellent now. He is 3 months old and is healthy as can be. He is a beautiful dog. He weighs in at 10 lbs, 2oz. Our vet says he is in excellent condition. He is also very smart and we love him to death. When he was delivered to us, by plane from Utah to Massachusetts, he was very well taken care of the dog carriers were equally as amazing and was in perfect condition. He did not have worms, ear mites or any other illnesses or diseases. In fact, we are actually thinking we might adopt another puppy or a retiree in the near future. Puppies use their mouths to explore their worlds, and play biting provides puppies feedback on what is appropriate biting pressure and what is not. Puppies are not unlike toddlers, who often bite, chew, or put things in their mouths to gather information about the world or help with teething. The main difference is that human children have hands which whereas puppies do not Puppies have teeth. Puppies bite to initiate and engage in play, to get feedback about their environment, to receive feedback on bite pressure, and because they are teething. So, ultimately the only way a puppy can engage the world — be it for play or learning — is through its mouth, and for developing puppies, that means a lot of biting. But, mother nature put it there for a reason. So, the key is to work with the behavior instead of stopping something as natural to a puppy as eating, sleeping, and going potty. The first opportunity that most Golden Retriever owners have with their puppy consistently is at eight weeks. At eight weeks, owners are quick to realize that puppies at this age like to play, and play biting is a normal part of that play. But play biting among puppies starts much earlier than that. Golden Retriever puppies start play biting between weeks five to eight. During this period, puppies begin to learn critical socialization skills, including bite inhibition. In addition, play biting with its mother and littermates provides the puppy its first opportunity to learn appropriate levels of bite pressure. A Golden Retriever puppy should not be removed from the litter before eight weeks of age. Doing so compromise the early stages of bite inhibition training and socialization that your puppy requires. Quite often, homeowners punish a puppy for play biting. After all, their sharp puppy piranha teeth hurt human skin, and an exuberant puppy has not yet learned what is appropriate. However, punishing the puppy for play biting is a mistake. Biting is normal and natural for puppies. When puppy biting stops, so does the opportunity for bite inhibition training. The more your Golden Retriever puppy play bites, and receives appropriate feedback, the safer its jaws will be in adulthood. Consider an adult dog that has not been taught bite inhibition as a puppy. It seems friendly and has never bitten anyone. However, when this friendly dog is threatened, startled, or injured like when a child accidentally steps on its tail , it may react by biting without the necessary skill to control its bite pressure. A well-socialized dog with good bite inhibition often does not bite at all when startled, threatened, or injured, and even if the teeth do make skin contact, it does not break the skin. Ian Dunbar says punishing a puppy to stop biting is a big mistake. With no opportunities to play-bite, the puppy never learns how to inhibit bite force or frequency. Let your puppy play-bite but teach it what is acceptable to develop a soft mouth and gentle pressure. This bite inhibition behavior taught early then becomes ingrained as a puppy and well before adolescence, when the dog has developed significant and powerful jaw pressure. What Is Acquired Bite Inhibition? They have teeth. They pick things up with their teeth, play with their teeth, explore their worlds with their teeth, and defend themselves with their teeth. Our responsibility as dog owners is to teach our puppies that humans are not dogs but sensitive and fragile beings. Dogs learn to moderate bite pressure and frequency through acquired bite inhibition or ABI. Puppies must be taught to decrease bite force and frequency towards people, dogs, and other animals. If a dog is threatened, scared, or in pain, a dog can often bite. When we teach bite inhibition to our puppies, it grows into an adult dog that is much better equipped to moderate its bite force even when it feels necessary to bite, like getting stepped on or closing a door in its tail. As discussed in the next section, timing is critical in teaching ABI, and you must teach it during early puppyhood. I cannot emphasize this enough. Bite inhibition training is so important, says Dr. Dunbar further notes that bite inhibition does not mean a dog will never bite. Instead, it means that bite inhibition decreases the likelihood that a teeth-on-skin bite will occur. Therefore, if one does happen to occur, it will cause no, or very little damage. Hold up. Puppies should learn to bite with no pressure as part of ABI training. There are two stages of bite inhibition training: force and frequency. A Golden Retriever puppy needs to be trained to decrease the force and frequency of bites in two stages and four steps. First, the puppy must learn to bite softly and then with no pressure force. Next, a puppy must learn to stop biting upon cue and finally to never touch human skin with teeth frequency. The window for the puppy to learn ABI is within the first 4. The ability to control its bite becomes locked in during this window, provided bite inhibition is taught. Beyond that window, nothing can be done. In contrast, frequency has no such window. Therefore, decreased frequency can be taught anytime; however, it is advisable to reduce frequency by six months before an adolescent Golden Retriever has fully developed its jaw strength and all or most of its permanent teeth. Force MUST always be taught before frequency. Force has a time limit, frequency does not. Stage 1: Decrease Force Soft Bite As a first step, you should always consider hand-feeding some food at mealtimes to your puppy. Hand feeding helps your puppy get used to human hands around food, and it begins to associate your hands with good things…food! You want the puppy to release the pressure, and pulling it out removes that opportunity. It hurts, so be prepared. Your squeal and howl may actually be real. The vast majority of puppies will stop biting if you let out a high-pitched squeal or howl. When your puppy releases pressure, praise the puppy and restart the play session. Continue playing and repeating the process of squeal, praise, and reward for pressure release, and so forth. You may encounter an overstimulated puppy or tired puppy in some circumstances, and they will not stop biting. In contrast, they will escalate the biting. As a result, the puppy may have a look and act like a demon dog from hell. You may find that is escalation occurs at specific times of the day. Most notably, the puppy witching hour, which is usually in the early evening. Remove all attention by leaving the room. Go to another room and do not let your puppy in, even if it follows. You are teaching it that play of this magnitude is inappropriate, and the consequence is you will leave and not play. Wait a few minutes, return and call your puppy over; ask for sit if it knows it. When your puppy seems calm, you can try playing again. If the puppy escalates, repeat the process or end the game until some other time. As a quick side note, you should be playing with your puppy in a confinement area, so it cannot follow when you leave. Puppies should not have free access to the house, and a playpen or a gated-off room works well. In this way, you can leave, and your puppy is confined to its designated area, where it cannot follow. Why do we leave the room instead of removing the puppy instead? Because physically restraining the puppy and then forcibly removing it when the dog is already in a state of escalation is not ideal, nor is it quick enough. Ian dunbar In other words, it makes things worse. It is easy to lose your temper when your puppy behaves like an out-of-control hyena and is not listening. But, trust me, you will feel guilt as heck afterward if you allow the situation to escalate. It is much more effective to put yourself in a timeout. It teaches your puppy that the reward of play you is removed when misbehaving, and it also gives both of you a few minutes to cool down. No Bite Pressure After some time, your puppy will bite less hard or even softly. Some will almost suckle your hand. You will continue to follow the process but reduce the limit of what you find as a sensitive bite each time. Move at a slow pace. With each successive bite, even if it is a very soft bite, squeal, or howl. When the puppy reduces pressure, then praise. Keep in mind that it may take some time to reach the no-pressure stage. Be patient but consistent. Never punish the puppy for biting. Stage 2: Decrease Frequency Next, we need to focus on decreasing the frequency of biting. Using a food lure works well for this exercise. Once the pup lets go, reward the pup with ample praise for stoping when asked. Allow a few minutes for the pup to cool down, return, ask for a sit and begin again. No Mouth on Skin At five months of age, your puppy should no longer be biting with pressure, and it should stop immediately when asked to do so, including no longer making contact with skin or clothing unless invited. If your puppy has progressed through the previous three steps, it should be well equipped to bite with no pressure and stop when asked. For most people, it is recommended the puppy discontinue all mouthing behavior by 6 months. If your puppy wants to play-bite, give the puppy a chew toy as a mouthing outlet or distraction, and avoid offering hands or play fighting. However, all puppies must continue to practice bite inhibition regularly throughout the rest of their lives. According to Dr. Dunbar, bite inhibition worsens as a dog ages. And, the best way to ensure this does not happen is to hand-feed your dog and brush its teeth regularly. Your dog should also have regular access to playtime and socialization with other dogs and animals. The good news is puppies teach each other bite inhibition when playing with each other. Teaching your Golden Retriever puppy bite inhibition with other dogs requires socializing your dog with other puppies as early as possible. Puppies teach each one another bite inhibition when playfighting. Once your puppy is vaccinated, enroll it in puppy classes, take it for walks, and to the dog park daily. The bad news is until such time that your puppy is fully vaccinated, bite inhibition training must not be put on hold. That responsibility falls upon you. Most puppies are not fully vaccinated until 12 to 16 weeks of age, so you must begin teaching bite inhibition immediately when you bring the puppy home at eight weeks of age. The more your puppy bites, the more practice you have to teach it to bite softly. Be consistent and make bite inhibition training the focus of your training in the first few months. Puppies love to bite while playing, so you should get ample opportunities to work on this. You are bound to want to know when your biting puppy will grow out of this phase and how you can speed that process up. Biting, as you will have discovered is usually accompanied by lots of noise! But I want to reassure you that even at 8 weeks old, your puppy has learned to moderate his bite in play. Puppies have powerful jaws designed to tear through flesh and crush bones. Those of you who feed your puppy a raw diet will know that even an 8 week old puppy from a medium sized breed can crush bones the size of your little finger. He is deliberately attempting to be gentle. Puppy Biting — Bite inhibition This ability, that your puppy has, to moderate the power of his jaws in play, is called bite inhibition. It is something that his mother started to teach him when he was just a few weeks old. And now it is your turn to take over and complete the training process. Growling and Puppy biting One thing that often worries people who have a new puppy in the family, is the growling that accompanies puppy biting. It sounds horrific. Great snarls and snaps accompany the biting and the puppy can appear quite demonic as he grabs onto your skin, or clothes. Tugging away with all the strength he can muster. Ninety nine times out of a hundred this is completely normal play biting. Is my puppy biting aggressive? You cannot determine whether or not a puppy is biting aggressively by how hard he bites or by the volume of the noise he makes. Play biting puppies bite hard and growl fiercely. Some puppies do occasionally draw blood. But these are not normally savage or crushing bites and the puppy is clearly enjoying himself. Fierce but fun! The play biting puppy will launch himself at the target of his bite. Whether it is your slippers or your fingers, with equal tail-wagging enthusiasm, hanging on grimly and grabbing repeatedly when the item is removed from him.
