how to take care of 2 months old labrador puppy

We are overjoyed for you! Golden Retrievers are one of the most friendly and loving breeds…and lucky for you, one of the easiest to train. Golden Retrievers require a great deal of mental stimulation to avoid going about on their own or becoming frustrated. Their love for food is infinite. Prerequisites for training my Golden Retriever puppy? What age can I start to train my Golden Retriever puppy? Sounds like a good deal! We can only hope. What do I need to train my Golden Retriever? Say bye to that sticky, meaty feeling in your fingertips. A piece of non-slip vet bed or a soft mat: For a cozy bed, warm nights, and good dreams. Treats: The more smelly, the better. Two identical toys : Great for swaps! The name says it all…your Golden Retriever puppy will love retrieving, so identical toys will be great for all the games we have in store for you in the Zigzag Puppy training app. Of course, Golden Retrievers grow to be big dogs. How much exercise does a Golden Retriever need? A golden retriever needs 2 hours of exercise a day. What age is a Golden Retriever fully grown? Golden Retrievers reach adulthood at 3 years of age and are seniors by 8 years old. Though their height has been reached, their weight will still fill out and they will continue to mentally mature. What are Golden Retrievers bred for? Distinctly British, the 1st Baron of Tweedmouth developed the breed crossing his golden colored retrieving dog Nous with a Tweed Water Spaniel — these look similar to Irish Water Spaniels. The cross resulted in a dog that was comfortable being on land and water kind of like crocodiles , and robust enough to hunt goose, partridge and even deer. Do Golden Retrievers make good family pets? In fact, Golden Retrievers are one of the most loved dog breeds in the UK. The Kennel Club has a lot more good information and info about them. What does this have to do with how I train my Golden Retriever puppy? But there is a logic as to why knowing the context might help you train your Golden Retriever better: Golden Retrievers love to work. Commonly employed as Guide Dogs, they love having a job to do, which means they will adore training. Anyhow, they will be a breeze to train. They will also do almost anything for your soft words and approval — your praise will work just as well as treats. Because they are so gentle, they are a great fit for families with a variety of lifestyles and ages. They need a good amount of exercise; mental as well as physical. Let us rephrase — a hefty amount of exercise. Besides you and food, being in water is what they love the most! They have a very strong sense of smell, so retrieving or scent work games tend to be the biggest treat for most. Golden Retrievers are the social butterflies of dogs. They love most people, and are not discreet in showing it. You know how us Brits can be about politeness. That being said, make sure you also teach them the wonders of giving things up. It can lead to great things! But it can also be less helpful when they give you a love bite on your arm — give them a toy to carry instead. Shift to some play, and revisit training later — we want training to be associated with fun, and not something they begin to dread. Play separate Bring your dog to a puppy socialization class as early as eight weeks to allow them to exhaust their energy with other puppies. This will relieve your adult dog from some of the puppy play and increase the foundation for positive interactions. We brought Emma home on a Saturday and took her to puppy class on Monday. Looks for an organization that sanitizes the play location and requires all puppies have at least their first round of vaccinations. Play sessions can be in short durations minutes. Older dogs will naturally give your puppy some corrections, and this is great for training manners. However, puppies can be like the Energizer bunny and can be more playful than your adult dog. They have not learned bite inhibition yet, and their razor-sharp shark teeth are as unpleasant to your adult dog as they are to you. Ellie likes her personal space, so watched her closely for times when she appeared overstimulated by mouthing and jumping. Behaviors to monitor and unacceptable play? Signs of tension, aggression, or fear Behaviors such as growling, snarling, snapping, charging, or biting Stiff body movements instead of bouncy Curled lip, low warning growl Ears pinned back Tucked tail One dog trying to jet away instead of taking turns You'll want to intervene and redirect if you see any of these signs. Do not pull them apart by the leash. Instead, quietly step in, separate the dogs, and distract them with a chew toy. This reassures the older dog they do not have to do it all on their own and that you will step in to rescue and support them. Be mindful of food, treats, and toys Continue to manage the environment to maximize the success of positive interaction. Pick up and remove anything your dog may be territorial over, which reduces resource guarding, when a dog reacts when they perceive a threat to a valuable resource in their possession. Feed each dog separately. You may also be interested in… About the Author Kevin Bubolz is the founder of Golden Retriever Life, an online community with a mission to spread smiles. Your new furry friend has a lot of growing to do, and you probably have a lot of questions. Your Golden Retriever puppy will go through a number of developmental stages throughout their first twelve weeks. Male Golden Retrievers generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand from 23 to 24 inches tall. Females are generally smaller weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. Golden Retriever puppy growth can also be quite sporadic. As an overall average, many Golden Retriever puppies will weigh just approximately 1. Golden Retrievers are classified as a gundog breed, and these dogs are often divided into those bred for show and those meant for work. However, the body of the show Golden is typically larger, taller, heavy-boned, and fuller in the chest. Small Parents Like people, puppies inherit physical traits from their parents. And even puppies from the same litter can vary in size. Neither of these scenarios is healthy for a puppy. Larger breeds like the Golden Retriever are more at risk for growth disorders than small breed dogs. This article will give you a lot more information on how much to feed, what to feed, and how often to feed a Golden Retriever puppy. Illness and Puppy Growth If a puppy has been seriously ill for a prolonged period, it may affect their ability to grow normally. However, once the puppy is free of worms, they should continue to grow at a normal rate. The best way to determine if your puppy is too thin or too fat is by how he looks and feels. When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. You should be able to feel his ribs using a gentle pressure. But if his ribs are visible, he could be underweight. Obesity is a huge problem for many dog breeds. Although there are ways to make your puppy grow bigger, this is not something you should attempt. It could also mean you end up with a fat puppy. One of the best ways to ensure your puppy has a long, healthy life is to ensure he stays at an optimal weight. Hip and elbow dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders are associated with excess weight in larger breeds. Having your dog neutered at a young age can also cause them to grow taller. The problem is, this can also cause abnormalities in joint formation. Neutering also makes Golden Retrievers more at risk for certain types of cancers. Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Remember that there are wide variations in size within the Golden Retriever breed. If this is the case, you should contact your veterinarian to seek advice. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. She licks the puppies bottoms to stimulate a bowel or bladder movement and eats the result. There is no cleaning up for the breeder to do yet. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. He is a proper little dog. Rolling around with his brothers and sisters and playing with toys. Teething toys, puppy Kongs, balls and rope toys are big favorites with puppies. He can bark too and some puppies can be quite noisy at this age! He chases after his mother whenever she appears and suckles hungrily, but she is starting to get fed up with it, and may be reluctant to feed her brood for very long. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. If the weather is warm you can get your puppy swimming now. He should be able to come when he is called, in and around your home, provided there are not too many distractions. It all depends on what you have taught him. He may still be chewing a lot and biting too. Use frozen Kongs to help him and give your furniture and fingers a break. Puppies can go for short walks now. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. Puppy development stages — Summary There is huge variation in the way in which dogs develop and mature. The puppy development stages and ages outlined above are a rough guide. We hope you enjoyed them and found the information interesting. When it comes to training, you get out what you put in. Your progress depends as much if not more on you rather than your puppy. If you train your puppy five times a day, six days a week he will learn many, many times faster than a puppy that is trained once a day at the weekend. Enjoy watching your puppy grow and develop. And have fun! Are you preparing to introduce your furry friend to other pets in your household? In this article, we will provide you with valuable insights on training your Golden Retriever to interact with other pets, ensuring their safety, and fostering harmonious relationships. Get ready to make new furry friends as we dive into this guide! As a pet owner, you play an important role in establishing a harmonious relationship between your pets. You can teach your pets to coexist and become best friends with patience and consistency! The introduction should go smoothly if your other pets are friendly to other animals. However, it may take more time and patience if your other pets are dominant or aggressive. It is vital to remain present during the introduction and correct aggressive behavior. Follow the simple steps below to help your furry friend feel calm and confident around other pets. Do they get excited and rush forward to greet you, or do they prefer to remain quiet and shy? For example, try walking your dog in areas with more dogs or taking them to popular trails or parks. This allows your dog to become accustomed to seeing and meeting other dogs without becoming overwhelmed or scared. Keep an eye on how your dog reacts to other dogs and only allow them to interact if they appear to be at ease. If the interaction becomes too much for your dog, be prepared to intervene and remove your dog from the situation. Do they have any particular habits or quirks that your dog should be aware of? Encourage your beloved pet to look into the eyes of their playmate during greetings to help them establish trust and a sense of equality. You can teach your dog to look at you or another human first, then back to their playmate for a few seconds to boost their confidence and make them feel safe. Most dogs, however, will do this naturally. If your dog has trouble making eye contact, use a sound to get their attention, and then reward them with treats for looking at you or another person for a short period. For Dogs: Meet On Neutral Territory When introducing dogs, you must choose a neutral territory where neither dog feels the need to protect their belongings. This helps to avoid any territorial disputes or defensive behavior. It is recommended that the cat is presented to the dog in a carrier to provide security. If both animals appear calm, you can let the cat out of the carrier but keep an eye on their interactions. Provide a safe and elevated location for the cat to retreat when they need some alone time away from the dog. Take a few deep breaths and try not to let your body tense up. Introducing your dog to a new pet can be stressful, but showing your dog you are nervous will make them more anxious. Instead, act as if everything is fine, and it most likely will be! It can be exciting to introduce your dog to new pets. Your dog can make new friends and play with other animals safely and enjoyably with some practice and careful planning. Keeping Your Golden Retriever Safe Around Other Pets If you own a lovable Golden Retriever , you already know they are social creatures who enjoy making new friends, whether with humans or other pets. However, remember that not all pets are the same, and some may not be as friendly towards your furry friend. This way, you can intervene quickly if any signs of aggression or discomfort arise. Introduce them gradually: Just as humans, it is critical to introduce your Golden Retriever to other pets gradually and carefully. Allow them to sniff and observe each other from afar before allowing them to interact more closely. Avoid forcing the interaction if another pet does not appear interested in socializing. Remember that your Golden Retriever is a friendly and social creature , so make sure they are safe and respectful around other pets. Following these tips, you can help ensure everyone has a happy and healthy interaction. However, if you have a Golden Retriever at home , you may wonder how to make the transition go as smoothly as possible. However, with some planning and consideration, you can ensure that the meeting of your furry family members is a success. Here are some tips when introducing your new puppy to your Golden Retriever. Before The Introduction Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting time for the entire family, including your older dog! There are a few things you can do to prepare for the introduction. This will help to prevent any potential conflicts over prized possessions. Create separate areas in your home where both dogs can relax and get away from each other. This will give them a sense of security and allow them to have their own space when necessary. Consider purchasing separate food dishes for each dog to avoid possessive aggression. This will help them understand that they each have their eating area and will reduce competition. Finally, ensure both dogs are up to date on their vaccinations before introducing them. This will ensure the health and safety of both of your furry friends. During The Introduction Your older dog loves your home and wishes to protect it, but we want to ensure they get along well with the new puppy. Introducing them in a neutral area is best to avoid territorial behavior. Remember, the first introduction should be short and sweet. Most importantly, remain calm! Your dog can sense your emotions and will follow you wherever you go. They look to you for advice on how to react in an unfamiliar situation. Your older dog and the new puppy will be best friends in no time with a bit of patience and positive reinforcement! Look for raised fur on the back of the neck or back, prolonged staring, growling, snarling, teeth display, or a hunched back. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is best to intervene and separate them for a short time until they calm down. Keep your energy and emotions in check by remaining calm and positive throughout the process. Prepare your dog by reinforcing basic commands and adjusting their routine. Use positive reinforcement to reward calm behavior around baby items. Begin with supervised interactions at a safe distance, allowing your Golden Retriever to observe the baby. Gradually decrease the distance and increase exposure over time. Supervise all interactions and never leave them alone together, even if your dog has shown positive behavior. Continue to provide regular exercise , attention, and affection to your Golden Retriever. Seek professional guidance if needed. With patience, preparation, and supervision, you can foster a positive and safe bond between your Golden Retriever and your baby. Conclusion Congratulations on taking the first step toward introducing your Golden Retriever to other dogs! Golden Retrievers can make new friends and play with other animals safely and enjoyably with some practice and careful planning. Remember to stay calm and have fun with your pet throughout the process. Enjoy this new chapter in your life as a pet parent, and treasure the moments you spend with your loyal companion. Make sure to monitor their interactions closely and that they feel safe and comfortable. What to do If your other pets are dominant? If you have dominant pets, you must establish yourself as the pack leader and provide plenty of instruction and boundaries for all pets. Keep a close eye on their interactions and be ready to intervene to prevent conflicts. How long should I wait to introduce my golden retriever to other pets? The timing for introducing your dog to other pets varies based on factors such as age, health, behavior, and socialization level. Puppies should typically wait until they have completed their vaccinations before interacting with other dogs. You can follow the tips we have above to ensure a smooth introduction. Will my golden retriever accept a new puppy? It can also help you because they keep each other entertained. Most older dogs will welcome a younger puppy with open paws! Why Cross Chow Chow with Poodle?? What other things do those mixes bring in the breed? Poodles, Goldens, and Labradors are all hunting dogs with high energy. Breeding two hunting breeds only increases the high energy both breeds already have, as well as increase the chances the dog could have separation anxiety since many of those breeds are prone to that. Most people buy these types of doodles but have neither the time nor the energy to give them the exercise they need. Poodles also need a lot of daily companionship. They suffer from loneliness and separation anxiety if left alone too much. Goldens: These dogs can be a bit needy. Not needy in the sense of maintenance, but attention. Since Golden Retrievers suffer from separation anxiety , they need to be in a household where they will have constant stimulation and people around. While this is often just an aspect of their temperament, and something often loved, it can become problematic. Goldendoodle are good dogs but not for everyone, preferably for active Family. Since the Chow Chow is not a destructive breed and independant, it can make a dog more balanced and that will not suffer from anxiety and without the tendency to destroy your furniture. They get along very well with anyone, kids, and other animals. Chowdoodles are highly intelligent and learn very fast. You can see it for yourself when you visit and read all of our testimonials on our website and comments on our Facebook page made by them. We know it, but don't just take our word for it, ask them. They are your best resource. August 12, Chow chow poodle mix The Chow Chow Poodle Mix, often known as the Chowdoodle, is a famous hybrid breed that has won the hearts of many pet parents all over the world. This one-of-a-kind and appealing cross combines the greatest qualities of its parent breeds, the royal Chow Chow and the intelligent Poodle, to create a versatile and engaging companion. Want to know more about Poodle Mixes? The Chow Chow is an old breed that originated in China, where it functioned as a working dog, hunting dog, and even a royal pet. The Chow Chow is a breed that draws attention and respect due to its lion-like looks and independent temperament. The Poodle, on the other hand, is a European breed that originated in France and Germany. Poodles are well-known for their intelligence, agility, and exquisite appearance. Originally bred for water retrieving, they have recently gained popularity as show dogs and family companions. This can lead to differences in appearance, size, and temperament. This mix, on the other hand, has a solid, medium-sized body, a wavy or curly coat, and a devoted yet pleasant demeanor. These dogs are flexible and may thrive in a variety of living environments, including city apartments and country residences, making them an excellent choice for a wide range of families. Our comprehensive guide will help you navigate the worlds of grooming, training, health, and more, ensuring that your furry friend lives a happy and healthy life. Breed Characteristics Because of its rich genetic history, the Chow Chow Poodle Mix is a fascinating breed with a distinct appearance and disposition. These dogs often weigh 40 to 70 pounds and stand 15 to 25 inches tall, depending on the height of the Poodle parent. Because of their medium size, they are excellent for a variety of living areas. The Chow Chow Poodle Mix has a wavy or curly coat that can come in a variety of colors, including black, brown, cream, red, and even blue. The Chow Chow Poodle Mix disposition is often renowned for being loyal, clever, and affectionate. They frequently create close ties with their families, which makes them excellent companions. Their Chow Chow pedigree, on the other hand, might make them rather independent and stubborn, so consistent training is essential. Socialization is also necessary for them to develop into well-rounded, sociable canines who get along with other pets and children. The Chow Chow Poodle Mix is extremely flexible and may thrive in a variety of environments and household scenarios. They may flourish in both urban and rural environments if they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and love. This breed necessitates regular grooming of their coat, dental hygiene, and nails. Coat Care: The Chow Chow Poodle Mix has a wavy or curly coat that has to be groomed on a regular basis to prevent matting and tangles. This will aid in the removal of loose hair, the distribution of natural oils, and the maintenance of a healthy coat. Depending on the type of coat your dog has, professional grooming every six to eight weeks may be required to keep their coat clean and manageable. Bathing your dog once a month is also necessary to maintain his skin and coat clean and free of dirt and debris. To avoid inflammation, use a light, hypoallergenic dog shampoo. Dental Hygiene is essential for the Chow Chow Poodle Mix, as poor dental hygiene can lead to gum disease, foul breath, and tooth loss. Plaque and tartar buildup can also be reduced with dental chews and toys. Regular nail trims are necessary for the Chow Chow Poodle Mix, as overgrown nails can cause pain and discomfort while walking and possibly cause postural issues. Health and Nutrition The Chow Chow Poodle Mix, like any other dog breed, is susceptible to specific health conditions and requires a well-balanced diet to stay healthy. Common Health Issues: Hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, eye problems, and skin allergies are some of the health issues that may afflict the Chow Chow Poodle Mix. Regular veterinary checks and preventative care, such as immunizations and parasite control, are critical for detecting and treating these diseases early. Nutrition: A well-balanced diet is essential for the general health and well-being of your Chow Chow Poodle Mix. Select a high-quality dog food that is appropriate for their size, age, and activity level. Ascertain that the diet has an adequate balance of proteins, lipids, carbs, vitamins, and minerals to support their growth and development. If you are confused about the ideal food for your dog, get advice from your veterinarian. Portion Control and Feeding plan: Establish a consistent feeding plan and portion size for your Chow Chow Poodle Mix to avoid overfeeding and obesity. Adult dogs should be fed twice a day on average, while puppies may require more frequent feedings. Exercise and Playtime The Chow Chow Poodle Mix is an energetic and playful breed that requires regular exercise to stay healthy, mentally stimulated, and happy. Meeting their exercise needs is essential for maintaining their physical health, preventing boredom, and reducing the chances of developing unwanted behaviors. Exercise Needs: The Chow Chow Poodle Mix typically requires at least 45 minutes to an hour of daily exercise, which can be divided into multiple sessions throughout the day. This can include walks, playtime, and other physical activities. Keep in mind that the exact amount of exercise your dog needs may vary based on their age, size, and overall health. Fun and Engaging Playtime Activities: Variety is the spice of life for the Chow Chow Poodle Mix, so incorporating a range of playtime activities will keep them engaged and entertained. Here are some suggestions: Fetch: This classic game is a fantastic way to keep your dog active and entertained. Use a ball, frisbee, or favorite toy to add variety and challenge. Tug-of-War: This interactive game can provide both mental and physical stimulation. Use a durable dog rope toy and make sure to establish rules for safe play. They would always look forward to pleasing their owners with expectations of a little attention. These dogs are incredibly daring and alert, with a strong defensive instinct, and thus make good guardian dogs. They are excellent working dogs as their parents, provided they have been trained to be so since puppy-days. However, some experts argue that these dogs might be prone to developing behavioral issues or characteristics of aggressive demeanor due to poor breeding. They are said to be such dogs that would find the weak areas of their owners, and when they decide to leave, they can easily skip away. Hence, it is advisable to build barriers around the boundary where your Akita shepherds would live, as also to keep an eye on its day to day activities. Care Exercise Being the offspring of two large working breeds, the Akita Shepherd needs a lot of activities and exercise every day. They love jumping and running. Take them out for a couple of long walks and jogs every day. You can also take your Shepkita to a dog park where they would be able to mingle comfortably with other dogs, devoid of any territorial aggressions. If you have a yard, take it out of leashes only if your yard is enclosed. This should ensure all-around safety. These activities are especially necessary if your dog lives in an apartment. Your dog enjoys challenges. Enthuse it to take part in vigorous playing sessions, including tug of war, Frisbee, and different other retrieving games that demand physical exertion. Grooming Use a slicker brush and comb them daily. A shedding rake also helps remove loose hair. But you do not need to bath it often. It is enough if you would do so only once or twice a year. Avoid shaving or trimming the coat too often since it serves as insulation against intense heat and cold. During the rainy season, it even helps to repel most of the water that accumulates. Health Problems The Shepkita might be prone to hip dysplasia, which they often inherit from its Akita parent. It primarily happens when breeders would choose a dog for breeding, which is suffering from hip dysplasia. Other health issues that this breed might inherit from their ancestors are epilepsy, elbow dysplasia, blood disorders, tumors on the spleen, keratitis, and chronic eczema. Training The Akita Shepherd needs a firm-handed, robust trainer, who can tactfully control the dog. Leadership quality is a quality that is a must for the trainer. Begin teaching and training them from the time of adoption. Allow them to socialize more and more each day, and help them mix with other pets and guests. Teach them to know you as the leader with an authoritative persona, power of command, and confidence. Always let your dog follow your footsteps, especially when you take it outdoors. Remember, successful and complete training is the key to success in making your Akita Shepherd a homely, well-behaved dog. Otherwise, the quantity of food and the diet chart should be the same as the other large dogs of its type and energy very much like its parents. They are said to be allergic to corn, thus refrain from giving it to them. Interesting Facts Some Shepkitas might develop dry eyes that might be caused by eyelids that do not completely close when asleep. Lifespan Sociability Akita Shepherd puppies are super daring and alert dogs. Bred from two outstanding working breeds, these dogs thrive when they have a job to do. Some experts state that this breed is prone to behavioral issues, such as aggression, due to poor quality breeding. The Akita Shepherd is also known as the Shepkita. Their stout and muscular build only add to their brawny reputation. Despite their aggressive appearance, Akita Shepherds are actually extremely affectionate and loving dogs. While quiet, they are constantly on the alert and always prepared to protect their pack. If properly trained while they are still puppies, Akita Shepherds can be extremely obedient. Very intelligent, this high-strung hybrid needs firm and consistent training or he may overpower you. It is also crucial to socialize these dogs starting at a young age in order for them to be well adjusted. Since they are working dogs, Akita Shepherds are also very active and playful and would do best in an active household. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They can become aggressive if they feel threatened or are unsure about themselves. For this reason, Akita Shepherds do best in families with older children. They are also great for couples and individuals. They can effortlessly spend an hour or more running in cold climates. Since they are an adventurous breed, Akita Shepherds are much more suitable for suburban or rural locations because they get a lot more exposure and stimulation from the large expanses of land to explore and run. For the first four months or so, puppy food should be fed for them along with natural food. Always avoid feeding them foods that contain preservatives. The best source of protein for Akita Shepherds is meat. However, veggies can also be included in their diet to ensure they are getting vital nutrients. An adult Akita Shepherd should be fed five to six cups of high-quality dry dog food that can be broken up into two meals per day. However, they can enjoy a long nap and a cuddle on the couch after playtime is over. Allow your Akita Shepherd to accompany you on long walks or jogs a couple of times a day. You can also keep him happy by tossing a ball in the backyard or challenging him to a game of tugs-of-war inside of the house. A minimum exercise time of 60 minutes per day will do. Additionally, these smart dogs also need mental stimulation. If he already understands basic commands, check out the Internet or books for more advanced tricks. As his trainer, you must act strong and take the lead to establish your dominance. The Akita Shepherd is a great dog with high energy. Learning more about the breed characteristics will help determine if it is right for you and your family. Background and origin The Akita was originally bred in Japan to hunt bears and other large game. The German Shepherd is one of the most popular breeds in the world. They are known for being loyal, intelligent, and protective. Max von Stephanitz is the founder of the German Shepherd breed. He is considered to be the father of the breed. They were used in the German military and were working dogs and were used for herding sheep and guarding property. There are two different types of Akitas — American and Japanese. The Akita Inu is a smaller dog and has a smooth coat. The American Akita is a large sized dog and has a thicker coat. Common traits of both breeds Akita Shepherds are a mix of two very different breeds but they share some common traits. They are loyal, protective, and intelligent. Akita Shepherds or Shepkitas need plenty of exercise and can be quite active. The male Japanese Akita weighs between pounds and stand up to 28 inches. Temperament When given proper training and conditioning, the Akita Shepherd breed can be a great family companion. This mixed breed dog is also very social, loveable, loyal and playful. While they do love to please their owners, Akita Shepherd mixes tend to be headstrong. They can also be very stubborn and intentionally obstinate. Part of it is due to their playful nature and the other part is a behavioral issue. But, with the right care this will be minor. However, behavioral issues will be difficult to quell. Unfortunately, females tend to be worse than males in this regard. The independent nature of Akitas combined with the bold autonomy of German Shepherds equate to an a dog that may need to be reigned in. Family and children Akita Shepherds make great family pets but maybe too much for small children. Akita Shepherds make great guard dogs and are protective pets when it comes to their family. Along with adequate and consistent training, the dog will be more than amenable and affectionate toward the child. Still, never leave an Akita Shepherd alone with other pets or children without supervision. This breed will enjoy everything from playing fetch in the back yard to taking an hour long walk. As with any dog, you want to start training regularly and early socialization are important. Grooming requirements and Shedding Because both Akitas and German Shepherds are dogs with fairly thick coats, your Akita Shepherd probably will too. This means you have to do daily maintenance brushing along with a weekly thorough brushing. Use a slicker brush and pin brush for grooming in between sessions. The dog will also probably need the fur cut down on its coat. This is ideal during summer, to help the dog tolerate heat better. After your precious pooch has been outside, you have to check its ears and coat for pests and fleas. Health The life expectancy of an Akita Shepherd breed is around 10 to 13 years old. While these are robust, strong and healthy dogs, they do experience some health problems. The most important of these health problems will be things like: hip dysplasia. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic Akita Shepherd Highlights The Akita Shepherd is a mixed breed dog. They are not purebreds like their Akita or German Shepherd Dog parents. The main colors of Akita Shepherds are brindle, white, silver, red, gray, brown, sable, and black. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. Regular weekly brushing—and daily brushing when their coat blows—should do the trick. Akita Shepherds have medium energy levels. Make sure your dog gets at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. With proper introduction, an Akita Shepherd can be an incredible, calm companion for kids. Always supervise play between kids and dogs. If introduced properly, Akita Shepherds can become friendly with other dogs. They may have a prey drive with smaller animals like cats. They are also incredibly eager to please and thrive with consistent training. Breeders wanted to combine the stoic, protective nature of the Akita with the loyalty of the German Shepherd. Both are intelligent breeds, making for a smart, loyal, protective hybrid. They continued to create Akita Shepherds as demand for the breed continued to rise. Akita Shepherds are still most commonly found in the United States. Even though the Akita Shepherd breed got its start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up Akita Shepherd rescues, or check with breed specific German Shepherd or Akita rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breed dogs and find homes for them. Akita Shepherd Size As the Akita Shepherd is a relatively new mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That said, as a mix between Akita and German Shepherd parents, you can expect Shepkitas to be on the larger side. Most weigh in at 75 to pounds and range in height from 24 to 28 inches from the shoulder. The female Akita Shepherd tends to be slightly smaller than the male Akita Shepherd. Some dogs may be smaller or larger than average. Akita Shepherd Personality Many Akita Shepherd enthusiasts describe their Shepkitas as serious with a streak of silly. In order to curb any unwanted habits or guarding behaviors, be sure to start training your Akita Shepherd as early as possible. Akita Shepherds are highly alert dogs, and they may try to protect you from whatever threat they perceive. This mixed breed is incredibly loyal and loving to their humans, and they want to make sure you are safe! While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Some of the more common health problems Akita Shepherds suffer from include : Bloat. Her father was an Akita and her mother a German Shepherd. She has a great temperament! She lives with a 3 pound Yorkie that she loves! She is not small animal aggressive. She is somewhat independent, aloof, and weary of strangers. She needs time to accept strangers and we joke that she acts like a cat! However, she also has some of the German Shepherd traits. She is always obedient, very smart, eager to please, and very trainable. She has those traits from the German Shepherd breed. She also "herds" us around the house sometimes. She is not all a "relentless barker" like some Shepherds are. And she rarely wines or growls. What I like about her is that we seem to have gotten the best of both breeds! She is affectionate when she wants to be and she can also be independent when left alone which gets rid of the " separation anxiety " that Shepherds often have. I am completely happy with her. She protects me with her life when my husband is not home. Almost like she knows that I am alone and needs to be looked after. I love her! The one bad thing about her is that she has a typical dominant personality that Akitas have which means she needs a "Pack Leader" that always is her leader otherwise, she can take over and become very relentless. He was the easiest dog to train in any of my experience, and his temperament is extraordinary. Also I have always admired a brindle coat and this pooch wears it quite well. Pinto is a large proportion of white with splotches of color over a third of the body in an organized pattern. Pinto Akitas usually still have a black facial mask, although sometimes split by white down the middle. White with black spots or freckles — atypical of either Akitas or German Shepherds. Shepkitas, except solid white dogs, will often have facial masks. Just how stubborn or strong-willed your puppy becomes depends on what proportion of genetic factors it inherits from each parent. Keep in mind that your pup has the potential to inherit domineering tendencies from either or both parents. German Shepherds are generally easy to train, although they can have issues with dominance. Akitas are willful, strong-minded, and independent. While clearly very smart, they seem to ponder commands before executing them. Are They Good Watchdogs? Prepare yourself for potential aggression against perceived threats. Early training and socialization are crucial so that your dog can become a reasonable and discerning judge of strangers. Experts recommend focusing more on teaching obedience rather than guard training with a Shepherd or an Akita. German Shepherds have courage, boldness, and fierceness that have placed them among the best guard dogs. Not specifically bred for aggression, their hostility against intruders comes from protective instincts first cultivated through their work with livestock. They extend that protection to all family members and are territorial over the home and property. Akitas, like Shepherds, are loyal and courageous. Their ferocity against intruders is inherent and uncompromising. Their double coat will be thick with the outer guard hairs probably medium in length. Your dog will need a bath if soil build-up becomes severe. Use a mild shampoo to help prevent irritation and keep the skin from becoming too dry. Clip nails at least once every six weeks and check ears regularly. A long-haired German Shepherd will rarely not have an undercoat. Usually, a Shepherd has thick fleece underfur near the skin, with a medium to long outer layer of coarse hair. Neither dog requires clipping of their coats. Your Shepkita will have a thick undercoat that insulates it from the sun and keeps it warm during the winter. Several states have passed laws that prevent you from leaving your dog for prolonged periods outdoors when the temperature dips below freezing. Some dog houses now provide safe means to install a pet heater when it becomes extremely frigid in the winter. The German Shepherd and Akita do, however, both thrive in cold conditions. Their undercoats provide excellent insulation, and their longer outer fur acts as a water repellent to keep them dry. Despite this, a shelter may still be needed. They share several issues in common. Your veterinarian may recommend surgical intervention in some cases. Hypothyroidism — The thyroid gland functions below normal levels, requiring supplementation. Elbow dysplasia Hemangiosarcoma — A cancerous growth on the spleen that can cause chronic bleeding. Autoimmune skin diseases Akita German Shepherd Mix According to Globaldogbreeds , the Shepherd Akita mix has picked up a few unique health problems not commonly cited in the research of German Shepherds or Akitas. Luxating patella — More often associated with small dogs, the American College of Veterinary Surgeons reports that luxating patellas appear to be on the rise in dogs like the Akita and Flat-Coated Retriever. How long will your Akita Shepherd live? Akitas, German Shepherds, and Shepkitas all have similar life spans — the Shepherd lives 10 to 13 years, according to Shepped. The Shepkita is also reported to live 10 to 13 years and the Akita 10 to 15 years. German Shepherds, with their intense single-minded focus and exceptional stamina, need mental stimulation as well as sessions of rigorous activity. Akitas tolerate shorter bursts of exertion, but still need about 30 to 45 minutes of exercise per day, according to Animalwised. You need to incorporate training with both of these breeds, and the earlier you can start, the better. Shepkitas are most likely to be kind and protective of children in their household, if socialized from a young age. They may or may not tolerate other animals. You may not see dog aggression appear in your pup until it approaches adolescence, or around six to eight months of age. Both Akitas and German Shepherds can learn to see children as part of their pack that they need to protect, and around whom they must be gentle. Akitas cannot be trusted to extend that solicitous attitude to children outside of the family. German Shepherds and Akitas have a strong prey drive. Some Akitas befriend cats, but their volatile play energy warrants extreme caution. The Shepherd Akita mix is potentially a great family companion. Like most large dogs, it requires early socialization and firm training. You can enjoy several activities together like flyball, fetch, agility training, obedience exercises, and hiking. If you have plenty of quality time to spend with a large and strong-minded dog, a Shepherd Akita mix may fit your family perfectly. FAQ: 1. With this pooch, you get the best of the Atika and the German Shepherd breed. There are so many reasons to fall in love with this dog. Shepkita dogs are rare since there are very few legitimate breeders out there. Considered spiritual symbols for happiness, health, and protection, Akita Inus were declared a Japanese national treasure in the mids. Akita Inu dogs were initially bred to hunt medium to large animals like boars, game, and small bears. The famous American, Hellen Keller , brought the first Akita to North America in the midth century after falling in love with the breed. From here on, the population grew steadily in the States and was later recognized by the AKC in .And the result is a loyal, and dedicated Akita German Shepherd. It was around the s that breeders started creating Akita Shepherds, sometime after Akitas were brought to the United States from Japan. However, they may have existed naturally throughout the years. Exercise These high-strung hounds are extremely athletic and need plenty of exercise in order to burn off some of their boundless energy. So whether they do this by playing fetch or chewing on your furniture or even their own feet , is up to you. However, if you can give your Shepkita a job to do, they will need substantially less dedicated exercise time, which may be a big help to you, time and energy-wise. In terms of work, they are most often trained to herd animals, or otherwise, they are also excellent at patrolling and guarding. Either of these jobs is a great way to put these pets to work if you can. Can These Dogs Live in an Apartment? While Shepkitas can technically live in an apartment, having a big backyard is ideal for these active canines to run around and survey. Otherwise, if they spend most of their day indoors then they will need at least one hour of rigorous exercise to tire them out preferably in a cool environment due to their thick coats. Just be sure that you have the time and energy that these dogs require in order to be balanced and happy. When it comes to these pooches, training and proper socialization are non-negotiables. This can be in the form of agility training as well as mentally stimulating puzzles and doggy toys. Without these, their natural instinct to protect can turn to aggression towards people or pets. Fortunately, training a Shepkita is a breeze compared to some other breeds out there, thanks to them being whip-smart and eager to please. They can take a lot but be sure not to push them too hard with high-impact moves as they can be prone to back injuries. These pups love a challenge and even more so, love excelling at any task they take on. In fact, this love for excelling makes them naturally competitive and excellent at dog sporting events and agility trials. They may be easy to train, but they still require a trainer who is dedicated to putting in the time. These dogs have too much potential and natural ability to be neglected in their training. The stoic yet fun-loving nature of these pooches makes them excellent family members, and they will take this role very seriously. When it comes to smaller children, they will both protect them with their lives and express all their goofiness during playtime. Socialization Socialization is crucial with these dogs. Their natural guarding instincts can turn from healthy overprotectiveness to a more volatile trait. When you bring these cuties home as puppies, you should focus on getting them used to other animals and people from the get-go. They may not even mean to be aggressive , but simply not know the extent of their force. In order to avoid any unwanted accidents, keep an eye on younger children around your Shepkita. Socialization with Other Pets These mix-breed cuties are excellent playmates and should get along with your other pets just fine. In fact, if you have other high-energy dogs, it may work nicely in your favor to let them expel some energy with each other. However, same as with people, socialization is very important when interacting with other animals. If not properly trained, they may see other animals as a threat and try to assert their dominance. When it comes to cats, for instance, these hounds can certainly get along just fine with feline friends but it takes tons of socialization. If not, then this is when their stealthiness can become a problem for your cat. And their incognito movements may not give your kitty enough time to make a run for it. So be sure to socialize your Shepkita around your other pets from the beginning. Instead, they prefer to hang back and assess the situation before unleashing their intimidating woof. These are two extremely intelligent breeds. It makes sense why someone had the idea to mix them. Their reserved manner is nicely balanced with an adorably goofy side during playtime and when it comes to their dog toys. Moreover, training these pups is a very rewarding feat. What would take other dogs days to learn, these eager-to-please, intelligent pooches master in no time at all. But like with any thriving relationship, there needs to be mutual respect. These doggos have so much to offer, but are equally headstrong and will usually only perform once you have their respect. They also shed seasonally when the weather warms up — this is called blowing their coat and can be a hairy situation. Otherwise, investing in a lint roller might be handy. Brushing them daily will go a long way towards limiting shedding. However, this will be a full-time job, multiple times a week in order to keep their coats neat and shiny. There are a variety of brushing tools you can opt for depending on your pooch. Pin brushes are good for longer coats, and using a slicker pin brush could work too, depending on the fur length. However, between running around and jumping they should naturally file them down quite a bit. Your German Shepherd and Akita mix can range from white, silver, and brindle to red, brown, black, gray, and sable. These pups take their guarding duties very seriously, remaining solemn and focussed while on watch. These pooches need plenty of exercise, and they thrive when they have a job to do. Putting these dogs to work on a daily basis will be first prize. Otherwise, you can expect to spend your free time playing many games of fetch or finding creative ways to expel their heaps of energy. These pups are rather remarkable and rare. Most Akita German Shepherd owners specifically seek out this breed and usually have a clear purpose in mind for them. The biggest reason is usually for their excellent instincts and guarding abilities. They are also known to make sensible spur-of-the-moment decisions without acting rashly. And of course, the fact that they are eager to please and love taking orders is a huge bonus. These are hard-working dogs that you can rely on to be consistent and obedient. But of course, the excellent service of these loyal companions comes with a price. An Akita Shepherd will require plenty of attention, and any spare time should be spent working with and training them. Their intelligence, trustworthiness, and dependability are but a few of the traits that make them perfect guard dogs. You will pay even more if the pup is bred specifically for security purposes. Another good bet is to search animal shelters and pounds for one of these special doggos. You might just pay a little less too. However, if you go this route, you may need to be prepared for some behavioral issues or health problems. This is a possibility due to potentially less legitimate breeding histories. This shows in the size variations of these pooches. Some of these dogs are medium-sized, weighing around 50 or 60 pounds, while others weigh in at an impressive pounds. They usually have a height of 24 to 28 inches from the shoulder. Dietary Requirements These dogs are like athletes and should be nourished as such. Therefore, a diet high in protein is essential. Luckily there is some excellent high-quality dog food on the market to ensure a healthy and happy pup. High protein kibble will ensure their muscles are well supported and they have long-lasting energy to sustain their rigorous activity. You can also look into adding some doggy vitamins and fish oil supplements into their diet for their joints and overall health. Some dog owners even like to give their dogs raw foods. These dogs have a tendency to gain weight easily. Not only is an overweight doggy a less happy one, but also an unhealthier one. A good tip is to not leave food or treats out throughout the day but rather, to implement set meal times. Health Issues Like most cross breeds, these dogs are usually healthier than their purebred parents. However, there are a few health problems to look out for when it comes to the Akita German Shepherds. It depends largely on which parent breed your Shepkita takes after in a specific area. For example, if they take after the German Shepherd side then you can expect to encounter spinal problems that lead to things like hip dysplasia and arthritis as they age. On the other hand, if their back is straighter like their Akita parent , you may be in the clear in this area. These are some of the known problems you can look out for. Perianal Fistulas: This disease is common in German Shepherd breeds and is characterized by painful ulcers and sinus tracts as well as ulcers on the skin around the anus. Sebaceous Adenitis: This disease refers to inflammation of the skin that leads to poor coat quality. Elbow Dysplasia: Elbow Dysplasia is characterized by lameness in the forelimb and results in limping. Serious Conditions Bloat: This occurs when the stomach of a dog fills with food, gas, or fluid and twists. Hemophilia: This disorder is a result of a gene mutation where Factor VIII is deficient and causes abnormal blood clot formation. Congenital Heart Defect: A defect in the ductus arteriosus heart vessel, usually present in puppies soon after birth. Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency: This condition is characterized by the inability to digest food properly due to deficient pancreatic enzymes. Pros of Owning an Akita Mixed With German Shepherd You will have a loyal, hard-working companion that will make guarding you their top priority. You also get to own a very rare and rather unique pooch. These highly intelligent canines will wow their audience with agility and trick routines. These dogs need loads of attention when it comes to training and exercise, and if not properly socialized, can cause you some problems with other people and animals. Male and Female Akita German Shepherds One of the main differences between males and females is a range in sizes. However, in saying this, there can also be a significant size difference between two dogs of the same gender. This is once again due to the lack of clarity in the breeding standards. Males tend to be eager to please and clingy, while females mature faster and are usually slightly smaller. This top-notch guard dog, dedicated family member, and loyal companion is a hound with whom you can build a real rapport. So if you do, hold on tight. I covered all of the costs associated with writing this post on the akita german shepherd mix. However, it does contain affiliate links. She is dog mad and dog aunt to Clover in London and Poppy in Sydney. They were first bred to hunt large and medium-sized game, such as elk, boars and small bears, as well as fowl. They were also used as guard dogs to protect the Japanese royalty. They are seen as a national treasure in Japan, and they symbolize protection, health, happiness, and longevity. They were first brought into the United States by the American author, political activist, and lecturer Helen Keller , who became infatuated with the breed during her visit and was given a puppy as a gift to take home. The population of these dogs steadily began to increase in the US when servicemen brought their own dogs back with them after World War II. They are fairly large dogs, with a distinct and powerful appearance. They have a big head and small triangular eyes and a robust stance. Their coats usually come in black, white, or chocolate, a combination of color and white, or brindle. These dogs also shed quite a bit of their hair, so weekly brushing is advised to keep their plush coat healthy. Akitas usually stand at around inches high cm and weigh in at between lbs kg. They usually live to become 10 to 15 years old. In terms of their personality, Akitas are a bold and willful dog and extremely loyal to their owner s. They are wary of strangers, alert, intelligent, and have a lot of courage. They are also an active breed and require a lot of exercise to keep them from becoming bored, and in turn, destructive. However, they are very playful and affectionate with their owners. They enjoy companionship and, with proper training and socialization, can become amicable around other people and animals. However, they are still best suited to a one-dog home and are stubborn, so they require a little more patience when being trained. Quiet Intelligence Many Akita Shepherd owners say that this breed of dog is a quiet one. These are highly alert dogs who are always on the lookout for any perceivable threat. They always want to make sure you are safe and will let you know if something is up without being yappy about it. They are also not very likely to bark a lot only when they deem it absolutely necessary , which is great because no one likes a neighbor with a noisy dog! Extreme Loyalty These mixed-breed dogs are extremely loyal to their human friends, as both of their parents are also very loyal companions. They are likely to develop a strong bond with their owner and can be overprotective at times. It is advised that you focus on teaching your Akita Shepherd to be obedient rather than doing any sort of guard dog training. They are only trying to protect you because they care about your safety. High-Maintenance Grooming Akita Shepherds have a double-coated fur of medium length hair, and thus they shed quite a lot. Taking proper care of their coats can be high-maintenance and requires a lot of time and energy to keep it looking at its best. This means that they may not be the best dog for someone with allergies. Their coats are quite manageable if you groom them regularly enough. A slicker brush, like this Miracle Coat Slicker , is essential, as well as an undercoat deshedder, like this PetNeat Professional Deshedding Tool , for when they start to blow their coats. Health Concerns Akita Shepherds are an appealing dog for many reasons, but they also have the tendency to inherit several health problems from their parents. While the Akita Inu and German Shepherd are two very different dogs, they do have some health issues in common. Canine Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a skeletal condition in which the ball and socket of the hip joint do not fit or develop properly, and it causes them to rub and grind against each other instead of sliding smoothly. This causes the hip joint to deteriorate over time, eventually leading to a complete loss of function. This is relatively common in large dogs and is a health issue when it comes to Akita Shepherds. Bloat Bloat is also known as gastric dilatation-volvulus complex GDV and is a potentially life-threatening medical emergency. This makes the blood pool at the back end of the body and will eventually send your dog into shock. It is caused by a deficiency in the amount of a protein in the body needed to make platelets stick together to form a clot when a blood vessel is damaged, or the skin is cut. This clot would seal the opening and prevent the body from losing too much blood. The deficient protein is called the Von Willebrand factor. Degenerative Myelopathy Degenerative Myelopathy is a disease that is more common in older dogs. It is a progressive disease of the spinal cord, which can lead to a loss of coordination, dragging, or knuckled-over feet. Eventually, the limbs become weak, and the dog can no longer walk. It is caused by the degeneration of transmission fibers in the spinal cord demyelination , which strips away the insulation between the nerve fibers, and axonal loss, which is a loss of the actual nerve fibers. This interferes with the communication between the brain and limbs and leads to the eventual loss of use of the limbs. Hypothyroidism is a common manifestation of this disease, but autoimmune thyroiditis can also be a symptom of something else, like lupus erythematosus or pan endocrinopathy. Progressive Retinal Atrophy Progressive retinal atrophy PRA is a group of degenerative diseases that affect the photoreceptor cells in the retina. The retina is a layer of cells at the back of the eye that converts light entering the eye into electrical signals, which are then sent to the brain to be processed and interpreted. This disease causes these photoreceptor cells to deteriorate or atrophy over time and will lead the affected dog to become blind eventually. There are some other health issues to watch out for that we have listed below: Elbow Dysplasia.

Temperature Dogs have different natural habitats. But they are highly adaptive! Their sweat glands are located only on their foot-pads. Their average body temperature falls within to .This may call for a life-threatening case, such as dehydration and heatstroke. These GSD, which is also called Alsatian, can tolerate both hot and cold weather as they have their standard stock coat. But not too hot nor too cold. They can survive in hot weather only if they have a place to drink cold water, and shade is accessible. But be informed that they dig up in frozen dirt during the summer season to cool themselves. Medical Condition One Veterinarian advises that if the owner tried everything already and the dog any breed still breathes or pants heavily and continuously, this may mean that they have a particular chronic health issue that needs to be treated right away. Cardiovascular conditions such as heartworm disease, heart problem, and Dilated Cardiomyopathy or Heart Disease caused by insufficient blood and oxygen pumped to the body where the heart becomes enlarged, build up fluids in the lungs, and thinner ventricular and chamber walls. For some time, observation is much needed. However, if the obvious signs or complications arise, take them already to the vet! Indigestion Have you even notice your GSD eating or biting almost anything they see! Nonetheless, these can cause reasons for indigestion or even obstruction. Your German Shepherds might have eaten something that was spoiled already. You can also say that they might have eaten big chunks of bones or objects that were stuck down to their throat. Just bring them to a real vet for a faster and effective treatment! Stress or Anxiety This might not be news to you, but German Shepperd is a social dog that can be usually found in the residential area. They are loyal and close to humans. This is also a reason why they can get separation anxiety. They breathe slowly and loudly once they experience stress or anxiety. This is because when they are left alone, they become really stressed. But only because they have this love and desire to keep their owners safe and close. How sweet! Another cause of their stress that can make them pant heavily is noise pollution. This includes the sound of fireworks, thunderstorms, heavy speakers, and basically noise everywhere! If not, this can shorten their life expectancy. What You Can Do? Let them enjoy the exciting moment in their dreams! Before getting a GSD, make sure that you know the basic facts about them and, most importantly, their medical condition. Be cautious at all times and treat them as a real family. If you observe anything unusual, researching or asking an expert is recommended, yet going to the veterinarian clinic would be the best option to choose. You should be aware of the signs that were showing heavy panting nor breathing. The normal heartbeat of dogs is between 60 to beats per minute. As for German Shepherd, the former applies. On the other hand, their average body temperature is to .Anything that made it less or exceeded is dangerous. You can also use the digital rectal thermometer. Count their heartbeats for 15 seconds, and you can multiply it four times to get the pulse per minute. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. They assume the role of a pet, child, friend, colleague, and companion. So making sure I have a healthy pup is important to me, and understanding their normal vital signs is a great place to start. What Are the Normal Vitals for a Dog? The normal vitals for a dog relate to the key bodily functions that indicate a healthy dog. In many ways, this is very similar to humans. Below are the four key vital signs for your dog. Body Temperature The normal body temperature for a dog ranges between .A healthy gum coloration means good blood oxygenation and perfusion. Heart Rate A normal heartbeat for a dog varies depending on the breed. Larger dogs have slower heart rates. Smaller dogs and pups should have a resting heart rate of beats per minute. Larger dogs — heavier than 30 lbs — have a resting heart rate of beats per minute. It is divided into two breath types. Firstly, the normal breathing rate for dogs is anywhere between 10 and 30 breaths per minute. Secondly, the acceptable panting rate for dogs is up to pants per minute. Other environmental factors such as weather, location, and activity level also play a part. Below, we will look at the two main separations for the normal range of dog heart rates. Puppies: Much like babies, puppies have a higher pulse rate than adult dogs. For pups, the acceptable heart rate should be between beats per minute at birth. This can increase to bpm when they reach two weeks before settling back to around beats per minute until adulthood. Small Dogs: The smaller the dogs, the quicker their hearts beat. Smaller dogs have a normal heartbeat that should be between beats per minute. Large Dogs: For larger adult dogs, the normal heart rate is slower, ranging anywhere from beats per minute. This is the best location to reach the femoral artery. Count the number of heartbeats for fifteen seconds and then multiply by four. The normal dog temperature for puppies is lower, between 94 and 97 degrees. Both high fever and hypothermia can be serious conditions and require immediate veterinary care. When a dog is panting, the normal breathing rate rises to panting breaths per minute. While the pant rate is essential, resting respiratory rates are the most revealing vital sign. If you feel your pup is having difficulty breathing, keep a record of its breathing rate. A healthy mucous membrane color is pink and moist. Should you find your dog has blue, white, pale, or yellow gums, you should seek emergency veterinary care. On a well-hydrated canine, the skin will quickly spring back into place. While there are other symptoms of dehydration in your dog, the skin pinch method is a quick, easy and reliable method. On average, your dog should drink ml of water per day per kg of body weight. Suppose your canine friend starts showing any sickness symptoms, such as coughing, difficulty breathing, blood loss, or otherwise seems to be of ill health. In that case, you should call your veterinarian and get them treatment as soon as possible. Alexander Laybourne Alex started writing from the moment he could hold a pen. You may notice that the coughing is worse at night or when he's resting. Coughing is usually caused by fluid buildup in the lungs. If your dog is short of breath because of a heart condition, he'll breathe quickly. The lungs may be filled with fluid and his breaths may seem shallow and rapid. This is because the ability of his lungs to absorb oxygen is compromised. Normally, a large-breed dog takes up to 25 breaths a minute at rest. If you take your dog for a run, check to see if he lags behind. The increased demands on the heart to pump blood throughout the body will cause your dog to slow down or even faint when he exercises. You should also check his heart rate to see if it's racing. German Shepherds should have a heart rate of around 80 to beats a minute. If your dog's heart is beating faster than this, it's considered to be racing, especially if he's not exercising at the time. In addition to not being excited about exercising, your German Shepherd may seem lethargic. This is because his heart is putting strain on the rest of his body to function. Your dog might not want attention and may even seem depressed. Look for a swollen and enlarged abdomen which is a sign that fluid is building up in the belly distended belly. This fluid accumulates because the right side of the heart is struggling. It's always important to watch for any weight loss or gain in your German Shepherd. Weight loss might be caused by your dog losing his appetite because of an underlying medical condition like heart disease. Weight gain may also be caused by heart disease, even if it's less likely a symptom. Edema happens when your dog's tissues swell. Severe symptoms of heart disease in a German Shepherd may appear with no warning. These include fainting, collapse, or even sudden death. These may happen if your dog's heart can't pump enough blood to his brain. Don't wait to get medical treatment for your German Shepherd. Is your dog breathing too fast? These are questions you may be wondering about if your dog is feeling under the weather and you need a frame of reference. Here are a few normal stats that you should expect to see in healthy dogs. The resting heart rates of small dogs and puppies are faster than the heart rates of large or adult dogs. Puppies can have resting pulse rates of to beats per minute when they are born, which can go as high as beats per minute at two weeks of age. Up to beats per minute may be normal until a year of age. Large adult dogs can have a resting heart rate of 60 to beats per minute, while small adult dogs can have a normal heart rate of to beats per minute. However, this is not often a cause for concern unless it results in health complications or worsens an existing condition. This can be a sign of many serious heart or blood conditions, or it could be a sign that your dog is out of shape and at risk for health issues. Count the beats you feel for 15 seconds and multiply the result by four to get the beats per minute. You should take the measurement multiple times, as it can vary a bit. You should also do this when your dog is healthy and at rest to establish a normal baseline so you can tell if something is wrong. The usual temperature of a healthy, normal, adult dog is to .Fevers can be symptoms of a variety of conditions that range from mild to life threatening, and overheating can easily occur if a dog spends time in a hot environment for too long without the chance to cool down. A low body temperature can also be a sign of serious complications or can be the result of hypothermia from exposure to extreme cold. Rectal thermometers should be used with medical lubricant to avoid injury or discomfort. A traditional glass thermometer should be inserted one to two inches into the rectum for two minutes for an accurate reading. Digital thermometers are easier to use, especially if they can read temperature via the ears. On average, a dog will take 24 breaths per minute, but it can be as low as 10 breaths per minute or as high as 35 breaths per minute and still be considered normal. This is for resting respiration rate only. Any physical activity or change in emotional state can result in increased breathing rate and still be a healthy response. Anemia , heart failure, lung disease, or any other respiratory disorder can cause high breathing rate, as well as simply being out of shape and overweight. Shock, poisoning, physical injury, and many other health problems can cause slower or shallower breathing. If your dog is panting, breathing very quickly, and has glassy eyes, it can be a sign of overheating, and you should get to the vet immediately. Do this multiple times to get an accurate reading and check while your dog is healthy and at rest to establish a baseline that you can use to measure against later. Have you found it helpful? Then let us know in the comments below! Answer Hi — thanks for your email. Great question. Normal vital signs for dogs are: Body Temperature — Body temperature in animals is taken rectally. The normal body temperature for a dog is to .If your pet has a temperature less than 99 or over , contact your veterinarian immediately. Mucous Membrane Color — The most commonly examined mucous membranes are the gums. The color of the gums is a good indicator of blood perfusion and oxygenation. The normal gum color is pink. If your pet has pigmented gums, lowering the eyelid can also give you an indicator of mucous membrane color. Pale, white, blue or yellow gums are cause for concern and you should contact your veterinarian immediately. Your pet should be calm and quiet. Place your hand over this area of the chest and feel for a heartbeat. You can also use a stethoscope if you have one. Count the number of heartbeats for 15 seconds and multiply that number by 4. This is not an abnormal heart rhythm and does not require veterinary care. For dogs, a normal heartbeat varies on size: Small dogs and puppies normally have heart rates of to beats per minute. Dogs over 30 pounds have heart rates of 60 to .The larger the dog, the slower the normal heart rate. If your pet has a heart rate outside the normal range, contact your veterinarian immediately. Respiratory Rate — Counting the number of breaths per minute and determining the breathing pattern can be very important in an emergency. Learn the normal breathing rate and pattern for your pet. Count the number of breaths your pet takes in one minute. Avoid counting when your pet is panting. A good time to count the normal breathing rate is when your pet is asleep. Normal respiratory rates: -For dogs: 10 to 30 breaths per minute. Dogs can also pant normally up to pants per minute. Best of luck!

Imagine you could come home to a lovable, dedicated, companion for life! If you knew what to look for when buying a German Shepherd puppy, you could find your next best friend. Before you buy your new best friend, read this information so you know what to look for in buying a healthy, quality German Shepherd puppy. I group them into major categories. Will you show him in conformation? Do you want to work with him in Schutzhund or herding? Or do you want a confident and alert companion? Know exactly what you want from your puppy. These dogs are the least costly since they have a trait that prevents them from winning in conformation competitions. These flaws rarely matter to most pet owners. And many minor faults like flat withers or slightly smaller offset ears will probably go unnoticed by most owners. The vast majority of GSDs are family pets. These dogs make great pets as long as they have sound temperaments! They breed some dogs for certain traits that are highly desirable but considered a fault. For example, long-coat or plush-coat GSDs. Show-quality dogs have good temperament and health. You usually buy them for their breed standard qualities that make them able to compete in confirmation or show events. A show-quality dog may cost significantly more if they have the traits desirable to win at a show. This group comes from Championship show lines with a long history of winning. If you plan on showing your Shepherd this is the quality you want. Beware of any breeder who claims they only raise competition-quality dogs. Even the best breeders produce many pet-quality dogs and if a breeder says they only breed perfect dogs, this is a red flag to not buy from them. The GSD is a herding breed, and the working-quality dogs excel at working trials such as scent competitions and Schutzhund. Other work includes climbing and jumping competitions or searching and tracking. They need mental stimulation to keep them occupied and take a lot of time to handle properly. These dogs are better with experienced handlers since you use them for high drive working and competition. They require hours and years of training and preparation for you to have total control during competition. We base this decision on preference. With the correct upbringing and training, both sexes are loyal companions and good with children. They may grow into more dominant dogs, so a confident handler is more desirable. Males may hike their back legs to mark their territory. This can occur on any object — chairs, walls, couches or even your leg. I suggest an extra bout of socialization during this stage, especially with other well-behaved dogs. So they may be better for the first-time owner. Unspayed females come into season every 6 months, so they must receive monitoring and watch to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Their season time can vary from as little as every 4 months to every 9 months. They can attract males to your property and on walks that will harass them if not spayed. Certain breeders and organizations will deal only in a certain coat length and color. The standard coat length is a short coat with double layers. Guard hairs on the top cover a softer underlayer of hair that provides warmth and protection. But there are many coat lengths available depending on your liking. Look online at the different GSD coat lengths to get an idea of what type of fur you want your dog to have. The longer the fur the more grooming involved. The color you choose is a matter of individual taste. Keep in mind the color of many Shepherds alters from their puppyhood to around 2 years of age. Your dog may become lighter or darker. Perhaps they will lose some of their markings as the color fades into the adult pattern. The best way to know what color and patterns your dog grows into is to see the parents of the litter. If the father is unavailable, then ask for photos. Why should you care where your dog comes from if you only want him as a pet companion? You want to get a dog that will live a long and healthy life from a source that has quality puppies. These tips will help you make the best decision on what type of pup fits in your life. Newspaper and Internet Classified Ads Newspaper and internet ads are in abundance. Many backyard breeders hide behind ads online or in local papers. But some breeders who use newspapers and classified ads are reputable and knowledgeable. The problem is you need to visit them to find out, and this can take time to sift through them all. Try the following more reputable suggestions to save yourself time. Dog Care Professionals Ask dog professionals for recommendations. Check with your local veterinarian, groomer, and boarding kennel personnel if they know reputable breeders in town. These professionals are good sources of quality leads. Use the same caution that you will for a classified ad. Verify their suggestions. Many of these organizations regularly receive puppies they need to re-home. While you might not know the full pedigree of the dog, purebred GSDs find themselves in shelters and rescues from no fault of their own. These organizations are a good resource for your first pup. Before adopting, find out as much information as you can. Was the puppy exposed to children? Did he live with other dogs or cats? A well-organized shelter or rescue helps you choose a German Shepherd match for your lifestyle. Start with looking online for GSD rescues and local shelters. Dog Clubs Dog clubs are local and national. These groups put you into contact with registered breeders through their own programs. They can give you the name of the GSD club contact closest to you for breed contacts. Dog clubs also have dog shows open to the public. This is a good time to watch the breed in action and to ask around for quality breeders. While using a dog club to connect you with a reputable breeder is not the only choice, it is one of the more reliable. Breeds multiple types of dogs and claims to be an expert on them all. If a breeder lets their mothers get pregnant more than once a year, this affects the quality of the puppies, so ask how many litters the mother has. These breeders selling unhealthy puppies also will refuse to take bag their dogs if you need to return them for any reason and have no contracts. They have healthy puppies and will answer your questions and have you make multiple visits. Openly show you where the mother and pups spend their time, including their garden or yard. Tells you the up and downs of owning the breed. Have all pedigree and vet paperwork on hand for your review. Specializes in breeding only GSDs source. They openly share this information with you. They have screened their dogs for health issues and can confirm this with documentation which they proudly give you a copy. Healthy mothers are given rest from breeding, and a reputable breeder gives their mothers time off from reproduction. Ask if your breeder if they are willing to take back their dogs if you cannot keep them, as this is standard for a quality breeder with a good reputation. Make sure your breeder has a written contract with detailed information and health guarantees. These are expected for safe breeding practices. You will want to make sure that the dog's temperament works well with you and your family. Ask whether you can get the dog checked out by your veterinarian. You will want your vet to check the dog's general health and for serious conditions, such as heart murmurs. Be sure to ask about the dog's health while the rescue has had it and if it is up to date on shots and healthcare. A good rescue should actually offer this information upfront. Get a history of the dog's healthcare up to that point. Has it had its first vaccination, had heart worm treatment, and parasite control? These should have all been done before the age when a puppy is adoptable. AKC papers are much like the title of a car; papers are issued to the junked Chevy on blocks in your yard just as easily as they are on a brand new, shiny Jaguar. AKC does not control breeding, approve litters, or guarantee temperaments. AKC Registration is automatic if you buy from a reputable breeder — they will provide all necessary paperwork when you buy a puppy. Shop with care. Rarely will a good breeder have the luck to own both dogs for the perfect litter. There are some good and very reasonable reasons to have both parents on site. However, you need to ask the right questions and understand why this is true. They might be, they might not. Are they too big to be cute anymore? Need more money? Is there a problem? Usually because there are more on the way. Be very wary of this one. Will a Breeder Ask Me Questions? Conscientious breeders want the best available home for their puppies. This determines the amount of time you will have available for your new addition. There are very important items that should be supplied by the breeder. Breeders will typically give you the following items: A signed pedigree A current Health Record; including de-wormings and vaccinations. American Kennel Club registration papers or application Sales contract. The type of contract varies and must be mutually agreeable to the breeder and buyer. Much depends on what you expect from the puppy show, pet, or performance. Feeding schedule including the type and amount of food. Copy of OFA certification of sire and dam, if available.

Buying a dog from a breeder is going to be exponentially more expensive than adopting from a shelter. Adoption Duration From Application to Purchase Adopting from non-profit, volunteer-run rescues can take anywhere from a week to a month. They might do a phone interview and a house visit before you ever meet the dog. Since the dogs live with foster families, you have to wait until the foster has time to meet with you. If they approve, you can give them the final adoption contract and the adoption fee and take your new pet home. Give your dog the time and space to explore the house and familiarize themselves. Make sure you have the food they like, give them plenty of water, and have treats to reward their good behavior. This structure will help them feel more comfortable in your house. Breeder Mill Red Flags Do your research before buying from a breeder. Some people are just out to make a profit. They want to bring the dog to you instead of letting you see where the dog grew up. They adore getting attention from anyone they meet during their walks and easily draw people in with their sunny personalities and soft silky coats. They have settled into an easy routine in their foster home and relish their walks every day and visits to the dog park. During their walks Brock clocks roughly twice the mileage of foster mom and Daisy with his side-to-side walking style. Neither is true! These pups love to live it up at the dog park where they show off their speed as Brock sprints and dives after his Kong frisbee, often grabbing it taco style, while Daisy relishes fetching an orange Chuck-It ball before eventually resting to chew on it. Brock is also a master at tug-of-war who has learned to drop it sometimes after repeated requests so it can be thrown again. Brock is extra special because he was born without a tail, which causes him to be incontinent. Inside the house he wears diapers and a belly band, and his incontinence is easily managed. When coming inside from a walk, Brock waits patiently for his diaper to be put on. Daisy and Brock took time to smell the roses and ponder life. While happy to be in a foster home, they would love to find their forever home. Please open your mind and your heart to considering adopting these two gorgeous pups. They will want to be with you. Have a crate or bed next to your bed for at least the first few weeks while you get them into a Puppy night-time routine. Here is how to get a puppy to sleep through the night. Alone Training Teaching your Pug puppy that they can be totally fine being left alone can be done with stuffed chew toys, time and patience. Remember to do it slowly to avoid any stress! Toilet Training Training Practically every website you read may tell you that Toilet training your Pug puppy can be a challenge. As with alone training, start sooner rather than later. Of course, if they run into any birds, butterflies and hear planes flying over, it will be great for them to get acquainted already. Have fun gathering surfaces with different textures for them to explore, like synthetic grass, tiles, and soil. Use treats! Remember to use lots of treats and praise when training. They love making your tail wag! Repeat their name to them a lot in the first week, so it really starts to click. Recall — How to teach your Pug puppy to come back when called — This is important for safety. Pugs generally stay close, but they can be very friendly and want to run up to people and other dogs for a bit of a cuddle, so a good recall will always help. But they can enjoy fetch games on a smaller scale, get on the floor and interact and play with your Pug puppy to learn what they enjoy. This will help to avoid resource guarding. Husbandry Tasks Pugs love affection but should be handled with care. Be mindful to not treat them like toys. Not going to blame children to think they are toys though — the resemblance is uncanny. To do this we want to teach them that hands will do nice things to them so use plenty of treats when handling your puppy. Week 2 — Training your Pug puppy Week 2 already! Chinese origins[ edit ] Pugs were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century. The pet pugs were highly valued by Chinese Emperors, and the royal dogs were kept in luxury and guarded by soldiers. In Tibet , Buddhist monks kept pugs as pets in their monasteries. Pugs were painted by Goya in Spain, and in Italy they rode up front on private carriages, dressed in jackets and pantaloons that matched those of the coachman. They were used by the military to track animals and people, and were also employed as guard dogs. His self-portrait , which is now in London's Tate Gallery , includes his pug, Trump. Every carriage I meet here has a Pug in it. Many responded to the breed's image of anti-functionalism and diminutive size during this period. The modern pug's appearance probably changed after when a new wave of pugs were imported directly from China. These pugs had shorter legs and the modern-style pug nose. The British aristocrat Lady Brassey is credited with making black pugs fashionable after she brought some back from China in .Hogarth's painting from the 18th century depicts the originally longer muzzle, as well as the picture in a edition of Brehms Tierleben. Since there has been a trend in some countries to breed "retro pugs". Following the deaths of pugs and other brachycephalic breeds, several airlines either banned their transport in cargo or enacted seasonal restrictions. Pugs have elongated palates. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord. Pug photo, ca .Note its small head and long legs. A pug by Carl Reichert. The pug that was predominantly featured in the commercials was Cheeka. A few other adverts also appeared in the following months, inspired by the idea of a dog following a boy. Overview When you have a dog from the age of a young pup, this gives you a wonderful opportunity. It offers you a chance to bond with your dog from the very beginning. This also gives you an advantage because you will be able to train and teach your pup what they need to know before they learn any bad behavior from elsewhere. This section will discuss how to care for a Pug puppy, starting at 8 weeks old and up until he or she is an adult, at the age of 1 year. Transition to a New Home Things will run much smoother if you plan ahead and have most, if not all, of your puppy care items already in your home. Here are the most important items to have: A crate — One with an adjustable size is best to fit the needs of a growing Pug puppy. Crating is a good night time method to use until a pup is housebroken. Gates or a playpen — Choosing an area to gate off or using a canine playpen are good options for when you must leave your Pug puppy home alone or for when you cannot be right at his side. This keeps the pup in a controlled space which helps in regard to bathroom needs and keeping a puppy in one area when he or she has strong chewing urges. Puppy food — This should be obtained before the puppy is brought home. Owners will not always agree with the food that a puppy has been being fed, however any change should be done gradually. Have the food that the Pug has been used to eating on hand, as well as your new choice. Details regarding making this change can be found here: Feeding a Pug. You'll also want them to be sized appropriately and at floor level. Honey — Puppies are prone to the condition of hypoglycemia, which is a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. Stress, among other things, can bring this on and while going to a new home is a happy event, it can also be stressful for a little pup that is leaving all that he knew and no longer has the companionship and friendship of his litter-mates. Treatment can be provided at home as plans are being made to bring the puppy to the closest animal hospital or veterinarian. A small dab of honey is rubbed onto the gums and then the puppy should receive professional treatment, sometimes an IV to restore sugar levels back to normal. Leash, collar and harness — Pugs are prone to conditions that involve breathing problems. The body structure of this breed confines breathing passages into a small space and Pugs can have smaller than normal nasal passages and openings stenotic nares. For this reason, using a harness can help a Pug breathe easier when on leash. A short 6 foot leash works best for both potty training and heeling. Read more : Choosing the Best Collar and Harness for a Pug Grooming supplies — The thick coat of a Pug sheds heavily and brushing it well and offering baths on a regular basis can help control shedding. Starting dental care at a young age can help a puppy become used to this grooming element and set up a foundation for a life time of good dental hygiene practices. Keeping the wrinkles, eyes and ears clean are important part of caring for a Pug puppy. Read more: Shedding - Expect your Pug to shed a lot and be prepared by having the right tools. Dental care - Taking care of your Pug's teeth should be high on your priority list. Ears - Expected shapes and proper care. Wrinkles - Keeping the wrinkles dry and clean. Sleeping supplies - Some owners prefer to have their puppy sleep in the bed with them and while this is not always a bad thing, an owner should think about how that will play out as the pup matures into a much larger adult dog. Having a pup get used to his own canine bed from the beginning, set up in a quiet corner of a room, may work out best. Do keep in mind that Pugs crave human companionship and do not like to feel isolated. Setting up the bed in a quiet corner of a well-used room allows a Pug to have a nice area to retreat to for rest and sleep while allowing him to be close to his human family. It will be normal for a little one to sleep anywhere from 16 to 18 hours a day. This included both night time sleep and naps that will be taken throughout the day. Chew Toys — Teething will begin around the age of 3 or 4 months old and can last up until a Pug puppy is 8 months old. Having a good supply of toys on hand for a puppy to chew on is important. Puppy Proofing Before bringing a puppy home and on a regular basis at least weekly owners are encouraged to go over all floors to remove any small objects that could be accidentally swallowed. All items that could be chewed on such as pocket books and shoes should be placed up high until the Pug has matured. Whining It is normal for very young puppies to cry when first brought to a new home, this usually only lasts for a week or so as the pup becomes used to his new family and environment. This can also be a sign of needing to go to the bathroom, so following house training guidelines, be sure to take your Pug puppy outside on a regular basis. Vaccinations for the Pug Puppy An important part of caring for your puppy will be to make sure he or she is up-to-date for all needed vaccinations. An 8-week-old should already have received his shots, as well as a de-worming. Veterinarians will have varying schedules, however this is a general guideline: 5 weeks Parvovirus: For puppies at high risk of exposure to parvo, some veterinarians recommend vaccinating at 5 weeks. Dogs at high risk are those that live in areas where wild life raccoon, skunk, deer, etc. The inclusion of either canine adenovirus-1 or adenovirus-2 in a vaccine will protect against both adenovirus cough and hepatitis; adenovirus-2 is highly preferred. You will want to talk to your veterinarian about this. Reactions to Vaccines Immunizations are intended to stimulate the immune system to then protect a dog against a specific infectious disease. It is very important to have your Pug receive all needed vaccinations. Your Pug may react to immunizations in ways that range from soreness at the site of injection to mild fever to allergic reactions. The allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. Mild- Mild reactions include fever, sluggishness, and loss of appetite. Mild reactions usually resolve without any treatment needed. This is called Urticaria. This happens when there is a reaction of the skin and shows as hives or bumps. It is usually extremely itchy. Urticaria may progress to anaphylaxis, which is considered life-threatening. However, Urticaria is the most common reaction in dogs if a reaction is to happen. Severe - The most severe reaction is anaphylaxis. This is a very fast, sudden, severe allergic response that causes breathing difficulties, collapse and possible death. This is very rare. Urticaria the moderate and most common reaction, if one is to occur happens soon after vaccination, often even before the puppy is brought home. It can happen in the car while you are driving back to your house. Your veterinarian will recommend immediate return to the hospital for treatment. Urticaria is usually treated successfully with injectable corticosteroids like dexamethasone or prednisone. Antihistamines do little to help with acute allergic reactions but may be given by injection to help prevent recurrence of symptoms after steroids wear off. Mild vaccination reactions usually require no treatment. However, if the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, call your veterinarian. Growth Rate A Pug puppy grows quickly and this can happen gradually or with spurts and stops. Many Pug puppies have a growth spurt near the 3 to 5 month mark. As the pup nears the 1 year mark, growth will slow down. Once a Pug reaches his or her full height, there may still be some growth in the width of the Pug, as the chest widens and fills out. How a Pug ages and his growth is rapid, yet can be staggered during the first year. Getting Your Puppy Comfortable One of the most important parts of bringing a puppy home is allowing him or her to become used to their new surroundings. Allow your pup to roam around and check out his new environment. Be sure to keep a puppy's water in one designed spot so that the pup can know that it can always be found. The drinking and feeding area should be in a quite corner of a room, without much foot traffic or noise, since small puppies can feel vulnerable while eating. The absolute longest that a 2 month old pup can hold their needs is 2 hours. The bladder and bowel muscles are not yet fully developed. As they grow older, this time will increase as they have more control over their body. Usually it will increase by 1 hour for each month that goes by. Therefore, a 3 month old can hold on for about 3 hours, a 4 month old for about 4 hours and so on.With 8 hours being the maximum time for any age. Informational Note: When your 2 month old needs to go outside at least every 2 hours, be sure to not get stuck into that habit. It is important to slowly increase the time intervals. Your 3 month old can wait about 3 hours, but only if you allow the pup to use his bowel and bladder muscles to work and grow stronger. If an owner always brought their Pug outside every 2 hours, the dog would never learn to hold their needs for a longer period of time. Keep reading about the best way to house train a Pug puppy. All puppy vaccinations should be given before you take him or her out to the park, to pet supply stores or any other area in which there may have been or could be other animals. Many new owners already have another dog in the household. As your puppy grows older and is receiving the needed vaccinations, you can slowly begin introducing your new puppy to other dogs and allow normal socialization to begin. The Necessities of Care To have a healthy and happy puppy that will grow into a happy and healthy adult dog, make sure to always provide the essentials: A proper diet. You will need to decide if you want to offer manufacture food, home cooked food or a combination of both. Pugs are very sensitive to their human's emotions. A hug goes a long way! Life Span Did You Know? The Pug, or Pug Dog, is famous for its flat-faced appearance and large, soulful eyes. They are an ancient dog breed that originated in China over 2, years ago. They were originally developed as a refined pet of Chinese royalty along with the Pekingese and the Shih Tzu. During this time, the Pug was considered a national treasure that outsiders could only access if one was gifted to them. Dutch traders from the s can be credited with bringing the Pug onto the world stage when they brought some back to Europe with them. The Pug made its way to the United States in the s. Now, the Pug is a popular dog breed worldwide. They are a popular companion that provides their owners with plenty of love and laughter from their comedic and playful antics. The Pug is a playful and outgoing dog breed with a charming personality. They tend to be very loving towards children and also get along well with other pets and dogs. They are a companion breed at heart known for their gentle nature and sociable personality. They love to give love and receive it in return. Their sensitive nature makes them intuitive as well and Pugs will often sense the moods of their owners and react accordingly. They crave attention and affection from their owners and are big fans of napping. This dog breed is often described as an ideal house dog and they are moderately adaptable. They will do well in homes of any size, including apartments. The Pug also adapts well to city or country life and are a good fit for singles or families of any size. Although they are highly adaptable to various living situations, they are less adaptable to climates. Pugs are very sensitive to the heat and overexertion, so they are best-suited to moderate climates. They also love to be with their families and will not be happy if left alone for a long time. As with any dog breed, the Pug has some health conditions to be aware of. In particular, corneal ulcers and dry eye are some potential eye problems that can occur. Additionally, Pugs can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and encephalitis. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see health clearances can help allay concerns for some of these health issues. Pugs are also big foodies. They love to eat! Their love for food means this dog breed is prone to obesity. As a brachycephalic dog, their large head and short snout often cause respiratory problems, which can limit their exercise at times and contribute to weight gain. This will cause them to quickly gasp and snort, which can sound relatively alarming. These episodes are usually not harmful as your Pug is just clearing their palate and throat. The Pug tends to be easy to train and is a good fit for owners of any experience level. They are eager to please their owners and tend to pick up on commands quickly. They are sensitive souls and their feelings can be hurt easily, so they will not respond well to harsh corrections. This dog breed responds best to consistent training that focuses on positive rewards and will benefit from participation in puppy training classes. Pugs have a smooth, glossy, and short coat. Their fur is fine and soft. Although their coat is generally low-maintenance, it will shed throughout the year. Aside from brushing, Pugs only need occasional baths on an as-needed basis. Because Pugs have ears that drop down, they can be susceptible to moisture, dirt, or debris. Checking their ears regularly and cleaning as needed helps to keep them healthy and comfortable. The same goes for their iconic face wrinkles. Daily brushing is ideal, but if your Pug is not allowing you to do that, a few times a week should be sufficient. Getting your Pug used to these grooming tasks as a puppy will help make it a positive bonding experience and a much easier process throughout their life. This dog breed has a low to moderate energy level. Generally, daily walks and some play sessions are enough exercise for this dog breed. They may have short bursts of energy as they have a very playful nature, but they will tire easily. Some Pugs can handle a little more activity and even compete in some dogs sports like agility, rally, and obedience. Make sure you check with your vet first before jumping into dog sports with your dog. A full-grown Pug will usually stand 10 to 11 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. This dog breed generally lives for years. The Pug was a popular pet of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Featured Pug Article.

This area is cleaned and disinfected throughout 24 hours a day. If a puppy has an accident it is cleaned up and then disinfected, this is done so that by the time the puppies are six weeks old they are going outside to potty. Going outside by six weeks old to use the bathroom does help when they leave here at eight weeks old and go to their new homes in house breaking. Security cameras monitor puppies all the time and with this we can see if there is anything that needs to be done to them, while still allowing moms to help with the care of the puppies. Moms need to be able to feel comfortable with the puppies and help teach them the first eight weeks. This also helps make a better puppy when it goes home. We use blankets, towels, toys and other items in with the puppies to entertain them and help them get used to things before they go home. They hear vacuums, tractors, trucks, radio, and other noises as well. In summer time they get swimming pools and if weather is nice they run to the pond for adventures. We provide a large play area with toys to entertain them. They get Kuranda beds to sleep on or play king of the bed on. Puppies are given vaccines, vet care, wormings, vitamins, probiotics daily and fed a good quality feed. We start the weaning process at 3. This is puppy food, goats milk, and probiotic mix that we make for them four times a day. We want to provide you with a happy, healthy puppy and believe that the first eight weeks of life here gets them on the right track. Our puppies are so comfortable they very rarely cry and this is due to the care we provide them. A healthy, comfortable puppy is a happy puppy and that makes them great puppies when they get to go home. We also play with them daily, snuggle with them, and end the day with them fast asleep; before we go to bed all the puppies are sleeping safe inside. Puppies get vet care as needed and a full exam before going home. We also microchip all puppies and pay for the fees so that if they are ever lost someone can find the owners or us. Facility The building that we use for the adults is a new building put into use January .It is a beautiful building that we take great pride in owning, please check out our kennel page for pictures. It is climate controlled and the dogs appreciate it. A lot of time, work and details went into the building to make it safe and comfortable for them to use. We wanted to provide them with a safe and clean environment. They have fresh water, food and outdoor access. It has lighting inside to provide them with artificial lighting as well as outside they have natural sunlight. Every dog gets their own Kuranda bed and their own toys. We buy lots of toys here for the dogs and they appreciate that. We believe that if you are going to breed, that care of the adults is just as major as care of the puppies. Care is not just health testing it is also how the animal lives its daily life. Here at Mabry Labs we can sleep soundly knowing our dogs are safe from any bad weather, healthy and happy. The building we use for the puppies went in in March .It is sectioned off inside for each mother, so that moms feel secure with their babies. This makes it so that mom stays calm and relaxed instead of worrying if another animal is going to get her babies. It is climate controlled. We take moms for walks and playtime away from the pups so they get free time as well. Feed is never out of the bowls, so moms can eat what they want when they want. Probiotics are given daily with vitamins. Blankets, towels and toys are given inside and cleaned daily. All floors are disinfected every time we leave the building. There are mats that have disinfectant in them to make sure that our shoes are disinfected every time we enter. We also use disposable booties for our shoes when we enter puppy play areas. As of we have added on a meet and greet building. This is a secure building set up for puppies to play and interact with people no matter the weather outside. It is heated, cooled, has tv, radio, couch, toys, basically it is a house. My office is in it, so that I can spend time working and playing with the pups. We did in order to have a place that would be easy to keep disinfected between people. As much as we welcome people into our home a home can not be cleaned the same as this building. There is a lot that we do that is not listed on here and I will update more over time. We just wanted to hit some points on this page so that you understand what we do here. Our prices on pups might be a little higher than some breeders, or less than some breeders, yes some breeders do charge more than us and still don't provide half this in their breeding program. Why would we do this some might ask. Plus, people pick us to care for their puppies that first eight weeks and we do the best we can. We have dogs with excellent genetics with show lines and hunt test lines. We have brought in dogs over time to expand our lines and have some of the best that you can find. Most of all we breed our labs for looks, health, train ability and temperament. We have kept back puppies from breedings that we have done over the years to produce some of the most beautiful and smart dogs you will find. We know our lines are great so we have grandparents of our pups here that you can visit with. We've spent a lot of research time putting together our Mabry Labs. We don't just have the genetics, but we have the building to house them comfortably. We put our heart, soul and time into this. If you find breeders charging what we do or more without putting money with the facilities and just buying up dogs even high quality dogs you might want to look elsewhere. As we have high quality genetics and great facilities. If we can do it so can they. Just most don't want a real kennel building as it cost them money and time. Also, a garage with a kennel off the back or side is not a true kennel. We wouldn't want the exhaust fumes near our puppies, would you? Has this upset some other kennels? You bet it has. We hope they soon step up and do what is right for their dogs as we always will here at Mabry Labs. If we are out of reach for a drive to get a puppy here, we are more than willing to help you find a breeder near you that meets our standards. You will always see us growing as everything we get goes into the dogs. Thanks for reading this page and any questions feel free to ask. We look forward to meeting new people along the way and love to stay in touch with our puppies as they grow with their new families. Continue to watch us as we expand on ideas. If you are looking to add a happy, healthy, well-loved, and well-cared-for lab puppy to your family, you have come to the right place! We operate quite a bit differently than the majority of other breeders. We hold a VERY high standard here in regards to health, conformation and temperament. We always have a goal in mind when we perform a breeding. Those breeders are not breeding to better the Labrador breed or produce quality, well-bred lab puppies, they are simply producing puppies to sell and make a profit from. We own mostly females here and we use outside males stud service to cover our females. This gives us a huge advantage when choosing the perfect male for a particular female. Each female will need something different in a mate and using one male will not be sufficient for every female if a breeder is true to themselves and is breeding for a purpose. For example, you have a chocolate female but she is lacking in something whether it be coat, bone, length of leg, too long of loin, carries her tail too high, eye color is too light, etc. She is going to need a specific male to help improve those imperfections. If you have one or even a couple of males on your property and none of them have what your female needs, you are not doing the breed any justice by mating two dogs together that do not compliment each other correctly. Breeding correctly and responsibly can be very complicated, stressful and very expensive. Another important thing to consider is health testing. Do you know the genetics of your female and your male? Is one or the other or maybe both of them carriers of a certain genetic disease? Will you be producing affected lab puppies by mating these two dogs together? Genetic testing is extremely important and necessary! We specialize in producing lab puppies from high quality show lines which are commonly known as the English Labrador Retrievers. We have also been blessed with some exceptionally well bred American Labrador Retrievers which can be referred to as field labs. All of our lab puppies for sale are loved unconditionally from the minute they are born up until the day they join their new families. As a responsible and reputable lab breeder in Illinois, we genetically health test all of our labrador retrievers to ensure that we are only producing healthy labrador puppies for sale. As sad as it sounds, these dogs are typically raised in cages from puppy mills and allowed to relieve themselves right in their own cage which typically has a wire bottom, and a tray underneath to catch feces. Because these pups are not setup for success and are a nightmare to housebreak if they ever are even housebroken! Why are quality frenchie puppies near me so pricey? There are a few factors including the cost of the parents, usually in our case k per dog. Secondly, the cost of the c section, reproductive veterinary care including progesterone tests before breeding, and before birth of the puppies. Third would probably be the cost of the equipment, incubators, oxygen concentrators, whelping boxes. Last but not least is our supplements, goats milk and vitamin regiment for both mom, dad and pups. Chances are you are going to spend triple that on vet bills and probably will not have the same experience as if you had owned a healthy pup. Frenchie breeders near me will be able to send your pup with a nanny direct to your airport or even your doorstep. French Bulldogs for sale Why are Frenchies so pricey when compared to other breeds. Lilac merle French Bulldogs are often mistaken for blue merle Frenchies, but they are much more unique and harder to come by. To produce this rare and beautiful color, the parents have to carry the blue, chocolate and merle gene. They also have lighter colored eyes which are glowing red. One of these rare traits is their sparkling blue eyes. Since the merle gene affects the skin pigment as well, when a merle patch crosses the eye area the Frenchie will have bright forever blue eyes. Sometimes only one of the eyes will remain blue, which is a phenomenon called heterochromia. They are one of the most unique Frenchies French Bulldogs are already very special with their distinct look, no matter their color. Because of their affectionate nature they become very attached to their owners, making them amazing companion dogs. They would spend every minute of their time with their parents if they could! They are perfectly happy lying on the sofa all day and require little exercise during the day. As they have short fur they only require occasional grooming, which makes them ideal companions for those who live in an apartment. As you might expect, colors that are considered common for the breed have the lowest prices around USD, while colors which are more unique and harder to produce are more expensive as well. Lilac Frenchies have a very light, almost ashy or silver color which gets lighter and lighter as they age. To produce this rare and beautiful color, the parents must be blue and chocolate or at least a chocolate carrier. Lilac French Bulldogs usually have light-colored eyes such as yellow, light brown, and blue which are glowing red. Lilac French Bulldogs, like all dog breeds, go through a growth process as they develop from puppies to full-grown adults. As puppies, Lilac French Bulldogs are small and delicate, weighing only a few pounds and standing just a few inches tall. As Lilac French Bulldogs mature into adults, they typically reach a full-grown size of between 16 and 28 pounds and stand between 11 and 12 inches tall at the shoulder. They have a muscular build and a flat face, and their distinctive lilac coloring is the result of a recessive dilution gene. Despite their small size, Lilac French Bulldogs have big personalities and are known for their outgoing nature. They are typically not aggressive or confrontational, but they may bark or become protective of their owners in certain situations. The fur color of a Lilac French Bulldog may change as they age, although the extent and nature of the changes can vary from dog to dog. In general, the dilute coloring of a Lilac French Bulldog may become more pronounced as they age, resulting in a more prominent lilac or greyish hue. This is particularly true for Lilac French Bulldogs with a lighter coat coloration. Additionally, some Lilac French Bulldogs may develop white hairs or patches in their coat as they age, particularly around the muzzle, chest, and paws. This is a natural part of the aging process. Whether you are considering a young Lilac French Bulldog puppy or an older adult, their unique and striking appearance is sure to turn heads and capture hearts. This is due to the unique genetics required to produce their distinctive coloration. Lilac French Bulldogs are a unique and sought-after breed, and as such, they can come with a higher price tag than other French Bulldog varieties. The price of a Lilac French Bulldog can vary based on several factors, including gender, lineage, and geographic location. Additionally, the price of a Lilac French Bulldog should be considered in the context of the long-term cost of pet ownership, including veterinary care, food, and other expenses. With proper care and attention, a Lilac French Bulldog can be a loyal and loving companion for many years to come. The French bulldog is the perfect breed for someone who is a bit of a couch potato to be honest. This might be the reason the French bulldog is quickly becoming one of the most sought after breeds in the world as we move more into city dwellings as a people near jobs and big cities the French bulldog is perfectly suited for this. I read that English bulldogs were bred with rat terriers to make them small enough to travel with for French aristocratic lady. I asked about health concerns and what to look out for when buying a French bulldog. Watch out for the cold and the hot. If you are worried about the health of your animal have it checked by a vet or ask for papers of recent tests. Good breeders keep all the paperwork on file. After finding Emperor and his girlfriend we were shocked to find out that he is one of the most sought-after studs of French bulldogs in the world. The breeder, after we bought him emailed me about a month after he came home and told me to check out the studbook. He had landed in the top 10 of lilac blue French bulldogs by shear luck he was moved into that position. I have no idea how they determine that but I think it has a lot to do with his lineage, his structure, his health and his coloring. People order his semen from around the world. To me, tan points are like eyebrows on a woman. An Emotional Support Animal he is! I have a sense of well being, stress is gone. The biggest thing I learned about my two Frenchies is that they add so much to my daily sense of wellbeing. I also read that having a dog reduces stress, gives you purpose and just makes you feel better. There are also studies showing that those who own dogs get sick less. Their immune systems are stronger. His compact, muscular build and happy disposition. A friend of mine commented that he looked like Winston Churchill had sex with a mouse. I have a sense of humor and if you think you do there will countless opportunities to inject wit about your Frenchy. English Bulldogs have a lot of character in their faces too but they are simply too big for the house. I have heard the horror stories about puppy farms so if you are going considering buying a French Bulldog do some research before you plunk down that kind of money. Is the breeder reputable. You can find that out very simply online. Check out the date when they first had a site or look at yelp. Google them on google maps to make sure they exist. I have heard nightmares mostly online where people have sent money through paypal to purchase a French bulldog only to see their hard-earned money go up in smoke. Have the breeder face time with you holding the dog if you live far away. He has amazing color, amazing structure and great disposition. He has been DNA tested, No brindle, no pied and beautiful tan points. There is no real way to guarantee the color of puppies from your dam but there is a greater percentage using my Emperor. Another thing about Frenchies is that we can send their chilled semen anywhere in the world. Emperor has been chosen by over 30 Dams for his semen worldwide. He is recognized as a top performer. Once your Dam shows the proper levels we can send a live video of his sample so that you know he has some serious swimmers. Who knows what I would be getting into when I got Emperor and Fashion. They both only need love, some food and a lot of attention. French bulldogs are a delight to have around. We were fooling around by a pond the other day and Emperor was all excited. I took off his leash and started to take pictures. I was completed dressed, with watch, wallet and phone in hand. He disappears for a second and comes out from under the doc and jumps head-long into the water. Before I know it I am jumping in after him as he struggled to keep his head above water. I grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and all 22 lbs and out we came. All muscle, no fat. He sank like a stone so be careful if you go to a pool party. I found a pretty cool swim vest with a shark fin on the back that I thought was funny looking but did the job. Now he loves to put it on and take a dip. Soon I will teach him to swim without it. They can learn but it takes some work. I taught my son Levon and I can teach him. It can be quite annoying even though I think he just wants attention. Who could turn down that face. The big question is how to get him to stop. I know its common sense, but I want to say it to emphasize to people that there is a good way to train an animal, any animal. If you think about it you should never use your hands to change behavior. Never hit a dog. I know that sounds obvious, but some people still do it. Remember, you do a lot of things with your hands with your pet. You feed your pet with your hands. Comfort your pet with your hands. Pick up your pet with your hands. If you hit your pet with your dogs they will be afraid of your hands and ultimately afraid of you. There is a way to train your pet. It takes patience and a little more love and some encouragement, but they will figure it out. At the end of the day getting a French bulldog was the greatest addition to our family. He has brought energy and happiness to our home. Humor is his greatest attribute. He makes me laugh and provides companionship. He teaches my son responsibility and can be the greatest friend when he needs a good listener. There are many types of dogs but the French bulldog was for me. There are plenty of dogs that could be rescued and give you the same kind of thing. Each of our Frenchies is raised underfoot in our home as part of the family.
