There are a lot of issues to consider. How Many times a day should I feed My Pug? A mature Pug can easily live a healthy life with one meal which provides all his nutritional needs. In most cases, it is more convenient for both us and the pug to split this to two meals. If your Pug had a full meal in the morning, be sure he will nag you like crazy in the afternoon. Puppies have smaller stomachs and need, relative to their size, a larger quantity of food so it is better to break it up to three or even four meals a day. If you are around your Pug all day and prefer to give 4 meals a day to a mature dog, there is no harm in it, as long as the overall daily quantity stays the same. Free Buffet or Set meals? Pugs are notorious for becoming overweight and need to be limited to a set amount. If your Pug is not typical in that sense, you are welcome to put the full daily portion in the bowl and see how long it lasts. One more reason for set meals is monitoring. You want to know how much you Pug eats. If you want your Pug to lose weight, you need to know how much he is eating in order to cut down. Every type of food claims to be the healthiest, more appropriate, tailored and nutritional. Kibble Kibble is the most common dog food available and has become the staple for the average dog. Pros of Kibble The makers of dry food claim it has the most balanced and scientifically based formulas to provide the best nutrition for a dog. They also tailor these formulas to dogs of different size, breed, age or other needs. Even the most discerning dog owners should be able a composition to satisfy them. The ingredient list is unclear and misleading. There are numerous food recalls yearly. There are websites dedicated just to keep up with the recalls. Teeth are going to need cleaning. Wet canned food Aside from the meatier texture and the higher water content, there is little difference between kibble and the canned, wet counterpart. Since dogs are also scavengers this diet will include some vegetables, berries etc. The pros As with the home-cooked diet, you have total control of ingredients and quality No preservatives, additives, fillers etc. You need to learn how to make, takes time Ingredients like bones and internal organs may not be available in your area. Can be pricy. Even More expensive if buying ready and frozen. Takes freezer space Raw Disclaimer I am a little bias towards raw food. I used to own a pet food store specializing in raw food for cats and dogs and I have been feeding my own Pugs raw food for over twelve years. Obviously, I am very happy with the raw diet and its outcomes as switching to dry food would have been easy and cheap. I believe it is the better choice for myself and my dogs. I believe I have presented the facts fairly objectively as far as the other feeding options go. There is no standard or way to measure what natural is and what the added value of it is other then the origin of it. Natural color could come from some secretion of an insect. Special Needs Puppies These little ones need the most nutritious and high-quality food you can find. If you want to find an economic way to feed your dog, please do it later in his life. Allergies Pugs are relatively sensitive to allergies. In some cases, this is due to an external source such as home detergents, but more often than not it has to do with their diet. There are a few brands that you can try with low, or no grain. If you are feeding your pug home cooked food or a raw diet, taking the carbs and grain out would be easy. Our Pugs were and are on a raw diet from day one and we never had any issues with allergies, except for one time. We started noticing that Preston had pinkish skin around his paws and around the nose fold. Since we owned a pet food store specializing in raw food, at the time convenient, I know we tried different types of meats, but nothing helped. It took us some time to realize the cause. We had our baby daughter at the time, and since she was very close and intimate with Preston, and he was eating raw, we made sure to wipe his mouth and feet with baby wipes after every meal. The baby wipes were the culprits. We switched them both to hypo-allergenic wipes and the skin went back to normal… Hip Dysplasia Pugs are ranked as one of the breeds with the highest chances of suffering from Hip Dysplasia. This can lead to trouble in walking and running and arthritis may follow as well. If your Pug is suffering from Hip Dysplasia to any extent you may want to either supplement their diet with Chondroitin and Glucosamine or to choose a brand that is made for joint support. Vets and nutrition. Having said that, if I needed nutritional advice, I would go to a nutritionist and not to my Doctor. The nutrition training vets get in many schools is provided by agents of the commercial food companies who are bias at best. Skipping meals Dogs will sometimes skip a meal. It is natural for them as food is not something that was always available on daily base. It is not typical for Pugs but it may happen. If it happens it will probably be a one meal deal. If your Pug misses a few meals in a row you may want to consult a vet. Treats and snacks I try and think of treats and snacks the same way I think of candy for my daughters. If the amount of treats your Pug is rivals the actual food, in quantity, you should reconsider or at least re calculate it. If you are using kibble both at meals and as treats for training, and your stubborn Pug ends up consuming a lot of treats, just take it off the next meal. The same goes for snacks. They should be a part of the total daily feeding and not extra. How long can a pug go without eating? An adult Pug can probably survive many days without food, but no Pug would stand for it. Unless your Pug has a medical condition, he will surely let you know he is hungry. Do make sure that your Pug is not deprived of fresh drinking water at all times. More so if the weather is hot and if he is on a dry food diet and has no other source of hydration. What if my Pug is overweight? Pugs love to eat and have a tendency to eat too much. A chubby Pug is very cute, but at some point, it becomes a health issue. Overweight Pugs may suffer from a wide range of conditions and or aggravate others. When I have a hard day, I just wish I could just call her like I used to.Alice has been gone for 6 years now and I love and appreciate her more and more : I also find that it's been harder and harder to let folks know about the Snowcloud Shepherds. They are actually very few and far between now and very hard to find. During the last 10 years of Alice's breeding, she bred several of our dog's into her bloodline.Yep, you read that right.There is no such thing : BUT.I was the only person given exclusive Snowcloud rights.I am hoping that with the new additions to the bloodline and also with the keeping of Alice's bloodlines, that we can all find a wonderful part of the Snowcloud Line that we love and cherish. I am certain that Alice did not want to keep the lines all her to herself or I and many others would not have some of the dogs that we have now. I am hoping that we can continue to work together and keep this wonderful line alive. As I talk just about the Snowcloud shepherds, I find that almost all of mine here at home are related to them. I think of all the shepherds that we are breeding now, only ONE is not related to the Snowcloud Line. Alice only made me think differently about them : and she was always there to help me figure this or that out. She shared in that love along with me.I love my dogs MORE today than ever!! No one.Just like myself, they are working towards what they feel is important to them. We are all lucky who have sought out and been able to find a Snowcloud Shepherd to add to our lines.Let's hope that we ALL continue to work together.I stayed with Alice many times, our whole family would travel there over a weekend, just to share.She mentored me and for that, I will be eternally grateful!! I do not know of all the sacrifices that were made on everyone's part and I do not know all the EXACTS that happened to make this dream of Alice's come true.What I do know is that in the short 15 years that I have known Alice, I have learnt what an incredible lady she was and her stability in which she lived her life.I placed honor on her and her dogs long before now and those of you who have been with me all these years, know what Alice has always meant to me. Alice was able to obtain a daughter and two sons of Dorothy's Star "Chinookie" directly from Dorothy Crider. He was the first dog Alice trained. Alice's Khemo Von Snowcloud U. The other Line was brought to Fairfield by the Davis family that Alice incorporated. Davis told Alice he got them from the Lookout Kennels in Texas. In fact, he brought back all that they had as they were retiring. Alice was fortunate to have 5 of these special dogs. All of them were white. Within 4 generations Alice also found that several of the other dogs had been written about in the books telling how the German Shepherds had been developed. Example - Ch. This line produced the largest shepherds ever seen, often exceeding lbs. Crossing them with the dogs Alice had gotten from Dorothy Crider, produced larger dogs, both male and female, than the original ones from Dorothy. Alice continued to bring in new dogs as needed, always keeping in mind the size, looks and temperament. Tango was sired by White Shadow Crider. Six Years with Allied Studios. They won many trophies and placings as well as High Shepherd in trial. They were the first dogs that Alice had trained. Some of these have been written about in the books on the Foundation Shepherds. Tasso of Vdla Marina Ch. Bill Vom Klestweg - Gr. Western Candidate of Giralda Ch. Alice put more Titles on her dogs than any other breeder of White Shepherds in the States. Many other Snowcloud Shepherd owners have put Obedience Titles as well as Champion ratings in other clubs on their dogs. However, they must be AKC registered. The White German Shepherds of Snowcloud Kennel are snow-white with black nose, dark eyes, lips, and some have black nails. They grow to be exceptionally large. I have had the honor of owning several. The males usually mature from 29" up in height and the females 25" up, depending on the care they receive after leaving our home. Their bone structure is huge. They have tall straight ears and beautiful shaped heads. They are an over all balanced dog. They are very gentle and loving to their owners and make excellent family dogs. They have proven to be very good with children and are especially protective of women and children. They make very loyal watch dogs and traveling companions as well as home companions. They are excellent in Obedience work and are so intelligent that training and showing them is very rewarding even for a novice. The white German Shepherd Dog has endured a long and difficult battle to earn its place as a purebred dog breed worldwide. It takes a deliberate and consistent breeding strategy to reliably produce all white German Shepherd puppies. Historically, white puppies would sometimes pop up amongst a litter of puppies bearing the more common black and earth tones. White German Shepherd Genetics Our understanding of the genes which control canine coat color is increasing all the time. But even as we unravel the unique DNA of other famously white dogs think of the Dalmatian, and the white English Bulldog , the white German Shepherd remains stubbornly mysterious. There was a time when all white German Shepherds were thought of as albinos. Nor do they carry the extreme white piebald gene which gives Dalmatians their white base. At the time of writing, in , the most widely accepted theory is that German Shepherds all have one spot in their genetic code which acts like a switch for white and non-white. But if they inherit the white gene for from both mom and dad, then all else in their genetic code is forgotten, and they are white. Because they need to inherit the white gene from both parents, it is described as a recessive trait. Only a pair of white German Shepherds are certain to have a litter of all white puppies. A careful breeder who understands German Shepherd coat color genetics can reliably produce a litter of white puppies by mating two white German Shepherd dogs. A solid white German Shepherd adult dog can range in weight from 60 to 85 pounds, with adult males outweighing adult females. As adults, the white GSD will stand anywhere from 22 inches to 26 inches high at the shoulder. Like the rest of their pedigree, the most common eye color for a white Shepherd is dark brown. However, coloration can range from a lighter amber to a dark mahogany color. Every so often, a pure white German Shepherd with blue eyes will be born. However, this is a rare trait attributed to expression of a recessive gene for eye color. A long haired one is even rarer! Long haired German Shepherds of every color owe their coats to a recessive gene for long hair. Historically, long haired GSDs were considered a genetic fault. Long haired dogs lack a waterproof, insulating undercoat, so they were unsuitable for working. But they are famously good-tempered and devoted, so modern long haired German Shepherds of every color are gaining popularity as pets and companion dogs. A German Shepherd with short hair has the same insulating undercoat as any German Shepherd, regardless of coat color. These dogs make for hard-working dogs who excel in guarding, herding, service, search and rescue, police, military and protection jobs. Their white coat helps to distinguish flock guard dogs from darker-haired predators such as coyotes and wolves. Grooming a White Shepherd In terms of coat care, the short haired white German Shepherd has the same basic grooming and coat maintenance needs as any short haired German Shepherd. All German Shepherds shed a lot, but white hair has a special talent for showing up against floors and furniture. They also shed out their short undercoat during the warm season. Frequent brushing and grooming can help keep shedding localized and manageable. The long haired German Shepherd will need more detailed and frequent grooming. They demand high level of work and interaction, or they will become bored and destructive. Are White German Shepherds Aggressive? In the past, many people trained GSDs to be wary of strangers, and aggressive towards trespassers. Most German Shepherds today are still wary of new people, and take a while to warm up to them. Early, daily, consistent and continuous socialization as a puppy will give them the confidence to greet new faces and situations calmly and confidently. From 8 to 14 weeks old, have visitors around every day, and take your puppy to plenty of busy locations. These include hip and elbow dysplasia — bone malformation at the joint, which causes painful arthritis and lameness. However, there is one condition that white German Shepherds might be more predisposed to. But further research is needed to see if this is correct. Are White German Shepherds Deaf? Has anyone ever told you that white dogs are more likely to be deaf? Dogs like Dalmatians, who owe their white coat to the extreme piebald gene, are more likely to have hearing loss. Dogs with the piebald or extreme piebald genes lack these cells, so they are white, and they may have hearing loss. But remember that white GSDs inherit their white coat, by a different, special gene? That means their coat is white, but their skin is still normally pigmented, and their hearing is unaffected! How Long Do They Live? The average German Shepherd Dog lives to 11 years old. There is no evidence that this would be any longer or shorter for a white GSD. Overall, ensuring your White German Shepherd puppy enjoys a lifetime of good health rests on choosing a breeder who invests in health screening for their sire and dam. But their striking looks are gaining legions of fans among a new generation of GSD lovers.
