I don't know how long vets etc have been advising the 5 minute per month rule but when I had my last dog Irish Setter I was never made aware of not over exercising until he was about 8 months or more. I used to walk with my friend and her dogs for about 1 - 2 hours at a time when he was still quite young. Setters are extremely hyper active dogs By the time I found out he was used to this so I couldn't put the clock back even if I had wanted to. I did give him a cod liver oil capsule with his food every day and maybe this helped keep his joints in good shape. He thankfully never had any adverse problems or ill effects.
