Apricot Poodles March 14, Apricot Poodles are one of the most popular Poodle colors. Apricot appears in all three sizes of Poodles: Standard, Miniature and Toy. The beautiful shade as well as the rarity of this color makes apricot Poodles highly sought-after. Today we will look at this type of Poodle as its characteristics. Even AKC Poodle breeders sometimes categorize their dogs under the wrong color. Apricot is a dilution of brown. Ideally it should appear to be a bright, sunny color. Apricot is difficult to breed for as it is a recessive gene and it quickly fades in UV light. If your Poodle spends a lot of time outside, his apricot color will soon look like a lighter cream color. The nose and eye rims of an apricot Poodle should ideally be black or dark brown. A medium-colored brown is accepted as per the breed standard, but not encouraged. History of apricot-colored Poodles Poodles have been around for a long time. Some paintings show Poodles in the 15th and 16th century. Back then, most Poodles would have been white or parti-colored. The new color quickly became popular and was bred mainly in the UK. It would take a while before the color became prevalent in the other Poodle varieties though: Only in , the first apricot Miniature Poodle was born. In the s, Poodles became more and more popular in North America and have been a beloved companion dog ever since. Due to the rarity of the apricot color and its recessive nature, not a lot of Poodles are available in this color! Are apricot Poodles rare? Yes — apricot Poodles are very rare! As a recessive color, apricot is only shown in a puppy if both parents carry a copy of the gene. Most Poodles are black or white with the occasional Parti Poodle who has two colors. Other Poodle colors such as red, cream, blue or brown are allowed by the breed standard but less common. The apricot Poodle is very rare among the Poodle colors, which makes these dogs very sought-after and potentially pricey. Some puppy buyers have to be on a waitlist for an apricot puppy for months or years. You should only decide for these dogs if you are willing to be patient and wait for your perfect apricot puppy for a long time. As all Poodles, apricot Poodles have a tendency to develop gastrointestinal issues. You should only feed your dog high-quality food and make sure that you take him to the vet if he shows any signs of diarrhea or vomiting. Like all Poodles, apricot Poodles are highly intelligent and will require daily exercise and training. A bored and under-exercised Poodle will quickly develop a range of unwanted behaviors, such as reactivity, incessant barking or chewing of furniture. Grooming your apricot Poodle Every color Poodle will require regular, consistent grooming efforts in order to keep the coat beautiful and the skin healthy. Letting your Poodle develop mats will lead to hot spots and can even cause severe skin infections. You need to brush your Poodle every day. He should also be bathed with a Poodle-specific shampoo about once a month. Many Poodle owners choose to have this done by a professional groomer. Depending on whether you want to show your Poodle or not, you can keep his coat either in a full show groom or a more convenient haircut. The teddy bear cut is very popular especially for Miniature Poodles. Training Poodles are generally easy to train as they are highly intelligent and love to work together with their owner. They excel at a variety of dog sports, such as agility, competition obedience, disc dog or dock diving. Especially for those dogs, participating in a weekly dog sport will be very beneficial. If you choose to show your dog in AKC conformation events, you will need to train them to show well in the show ring. This includes walking and trotting on the leash and standing still while the judge examines your dog. The most common behavioral problems in apricot Poodles are anxiety, nervousness and excessive barking. Extensive socialization is necessary to turn them into well-mannered and calm companions. This includes positive exposure to people, dogs, different places and a variety of sounds. Poodles can show prey drive. Do not underestimate that and make sure to teach your dog impulse control and recall skills. This is especially important if your Poodle is sharing your home with smaller animals, such as cats. How much do apricot Poodles cost? As a rare color, you can expect to pay more for an apricot Poodle of either size. The Bottom Line Apricot Poodles are very popular due to their unusual coloring and their rarity. Many owners are drawn to this special kind of Poodle because they are so unique. It is important to not let rarity alone be a deciding factor when it comes to picking your future puppy though! You should never buy any dog Poodle or not for his color alone. Apricot Poodles will require the same care, grooming, training and exercise as any other kind of Poodle. Due to the at times nervous nature of this breed, it is really important that they are well-socialized and get a lot of positive exposure, especially during their puppyhood. Apricot Poodles excel at a variety of dog sports and will love to participate in those with their owner! Due to the limited supply of apricot Poodles, expect to be put on a waitlist for a potential puppy. The price will likely be higher than that for a more common Poodle color as well. Being patient pays off though: These dogs are amazing companions that will brighten up every day! Unleash the real potential of your companion! We will email you daily with training tips, ideas and videos. This is an introductory course into our training philosophy. You will get customized video lessons based on your training goals — and you can implement them in just 5 minutes a day. Articles I recently visited a friend, and she had one of the loveliest dogs I have come across. So, what is an Apricot Poodle? An Apricot Poodle is a purebred Poodle whose coat is a light yellowish-orange color. Except for their color, Apricot Poodles are no different from other Poodles. If you love the Apricot Poodle and are thinking of getting yourself one, the first step is to learn as much as you can about them. This guide is going to cover all the relevant information about Apricot Poodles. Apricot Poodles have a sunny, bright color that looks like a dilution of red. Actually, it is possible for Poodle puppies born with a red coat to fade and turn apricot. Similarly, Poodle puppies born with an apricot coat can darken as they grow older and turn red. However, for a Poodle to be considered apricot, it needs to have been born with an apricot coat. Most Apricot Poodles will have dark eyes and black points eye rims, noses, lips, and toenails. While the breed standard allows Apricot Poodles with lighter points, this is not encouraged. Are Apricot Poodles Rare? Apricot Poodles are extremely rare. Actually, some breeders consider apricot to be the rarest Poodle color. This can be attributed to the fact that the apricot coloration is caused by a recessive gene that is very difficult to breed for. Owing to their rarity, there is a very high demand for Apricot Poodles. Sometimes, people interested in Apricot Poodles have to get on a waiting list for months before a pup becomes available. This high demand, unfortunately, makes Apricot Poodles more expensive compared to other Poodle colors. Apricot Poodle Size With color being the only difference between Apricot Poodles and other Poodles, you can expect the Apricot Poodle to fall into one of the three official Poodle sizes — standard, mini, and toy. Standard Apricot Poodles are the largest and can get to a weight of up to 75 lbs. Mini Apricot Poodles weigh between 12 to 20 lbs. Toy Apricot Poodles are the smallest and do not exceed 7 lbs. This means that the average Apricot Poodle will live for an average of 12 years, with some even getting to 15 years or more. Some common health issues to watch out for if you have an Apricot Poodle include: Hip Dysplasia This condition is caused by the dislocation of the thigh bone from the hip joint socket. Dogs affected by this condition experience lots of pain when moving around, and with time, hip dysplasia can lead to total loss of movement. Sebaceous Adenitis Sebaceous adenitis is an inflammatory condition that is common among all Poodles, including Apricot Poodles. Sebaceous adenitis affects the skin and causes scaling of the skin, blistering, itching, infections, and hair loss. Dietary Needs The amount of food to feed your Apricot Poodle will depend on their size. Standard Apricot Poodles have higher energy requirements and will therefore need about 3 to 4 cups of food every day, while toy Poodles will be okay with one cup. To reduce the risk of bloat, feed your Apricot Poodle 2 or 3 times per day, instead of giving them all the food at once. In addition to giving your Apricot Poodle high quality food, we recommend supplementing the food with multivitamins for better health and immunity. To avoid dental issues, which Poodles are highly prone to, you should also invest in dental water additives. Exercise Requirements Owing to their high energy levels, Apricot Poodles require lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Once again, the amount of exercise to give your Apricot Poodle will depend on their size. Toy Apricot Poodles can do with 2 exercise sessions daily, each session lasting 15 minutes, and can even be exercised inside the house. Standard Apricot Poodles will need 2 exercise sessions daily, each session lasting 30 minutes, and will need to be taken outside, since they are too big to exercise indoors. Temperaments Of Apricot Poodles Anyone who has owned a Poodle knows that these dogs love to bark, and the Apricot Poodle is no exception. While this trait makes them great watchdogs, it can also be a nuisance to some people. Therefore, you should only get an Apricot Poodle if you are comfortable with their barking. Temperament The Apricot Poodle is no different from other Poodles when it comes to temperament. Apricot Poodles are loving, loyal and social pooches whose greatest joy is being in the company of the people they love. If they were socialized from a young age, Apricot Poodles will be comfortable around all family members, and even other household pets. One thing most people love about Apricot Poodles is how loving these dogs are. They always want to be next to their favorite human. Actually, your Apricot Poodle can develop separation anxiety due to being left alone routinely. To prevent your Apricot Poodle from developing separation anxiety, only get yourself this fido if your lifestyle allows you to be close to your dog every day. If you have to spend the day away from your Apricot Poodle, hire a dog sitter to watch after your canine buddy until you are back. Are Apricot Poodles Hypoallergenic? One of the reasons why Poodles are so popular is because they are hypoallergenic. They shed very little and are therefore good for people with allergies. The Apricot Poodle is no different. They have the same low shedding coat as all other Poodles. Brushing If your Apricot Poodle wears their hair long, the hair is prone to matting and tangling, which can in turn lead to hot spots and even infections. To avoid this, make a habit of brushing your Apricot Poodle every day. Removes loose hair: reaches through the topcoat to remove loose undercoat hair without cutting skin or damaging the.FURejector button: just push the button to release hair with ease. Unless your four-legged buddy has had a dip in the mud, giving them one bath after three months is enough. Due to their sensitive skin, always use gentle dog shampoos to bathe your Apricot Poodle. Our top recommendation is Mighty Petz 2-In-1 Oatmeal Dog Shampoo And Conditioner , which is formulated with all-natural aloe vera that is perfect for dogs with sensitive skin. Red Poodles usually have a dark, rich color, while Apricot Poodles look like a lighter shade of red, often bordering on cream. Some experts believe that Red Poodles emerged from Apricot Poodles. One can easily confuse between the Red and Apricot Poodle, especially when a Red Apricot fades, or when the color of an Apricot Poodle darkens. Sometimes, Apricot and Cream Poodles can be very difficult to tell apart due to the closeness of their colors. However, Apricot Poodles have a darker and more vibrant color compared to Cream Poodles, and have dark points. Are Apricot Toy Poodles Rare? Apricot is the rarest Poodle color in the world. This is due to the fact that the apricot coloration is caused by a recessive gene that is carried by a very small number of Poodles. For a Poodle puppy to be an apricot, both the mother and father need to carry this recessive gene. These include the standard, the miniature, and the toy, which stands less than ten inches. The toy poodle can be slightly yappy sometimes, but they all make excellent watchdogs. Probably the most beneficial reason to have a Poodle, for most people, is that they are hypoallergenic. This is a key characteristic for a lot of people, especially those who have bad allergies. Poodles are also crossbred with other breeds to make a wider variety of hypoallergenic dogs. Apricot colored Malti-Poo Poodles are also crossbred with other breeds to make a wider variety of hypoallergenic dogs. Among small dogs, the Malti-Poo, Shi-Poo, and Yorkie Poo are becoming the number one choice of people wanting playful, loving, yet hypoallergenic dogs. They are very smart and pick up on commands very easily. There are Poodles successful in essentially every activity that dogs have tried, and are unofficially ranked second to Border Collies in intelligence. The need to please makes them perfect Seeing Eye dogs, service dogs, and therapy dogs. These dogs are adaptable and make the perfect pet for families or singles. As long as they have plenty of space to run and roam about to please their active personality, they will be the perfect dog for you. They were known to be originally from Germany, but standardized in France where they were very commonly known as water retrievers. Whereas Miniature Poodles may have been used to truffle hunters and Toy Poodles were used in circuses and performances. The Standard Poodle is said to be the oldest type, but other research shows that there might have been a smaller breed of Poodle before the Standard came along. You may wonder how we got from these strong and menacing hunting dogs to the fluffy, little foo-foo dog that has been bred over time. The pattern and clip of the Poodle was actually originally designed by hunters and they shaved all the hair and then kept the poofs by the joints and vital organs which was to help them move quicker and more comfortably through the water. With that being said, it is a false accusation to say that Poodles are always feminine and only for females. Personality Apricot Colored Toy Poodle Poodles are highly energetic, but have a tendency to get bored rather quick. If they are not occupied with some sort of toy or treat, they sometimes will become curious and find something to do themselves, which may not be on the same terms as what the owner would like. They are also very alert, which is why they make such good watchdogs. They are highly trainable and are also very faithful to their owner s. With good training, these dogs will never bite the hand that feeds them. Toy Poodles are also very active and do well with active families. Any chance they can get they would love to be playing fetch, or running around the yard as long as they are being supervised. However, with Toy Poodles, if they get enough exercise outside, they will be pretty calm indoors and follow you around, or lie with you.

History of French Bulldog puppies French Bulldogs are considered one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States and around the world. They are known for their affectionate and playful personalities and are often kept as companion animals. The breed is a descendant of the English Bulldog, which was brought to France by English lacemakers. The French Bulldog was then developed by crossing the English Bulldog with local small breeds, such as the Terrier, to create a smaller, more delicate version of the English Bulldog. During the 19th century, French Bulldogs were used for bull-baiting and dog fighting. They quickly gained popularity among the upper class in France, especially in Paris, where they were considered a symbol of luxury and elegance. In the late 19th century, French Bulldogs were brought to the United States by American tourists who fell in love with the breed while visiting France. I have two — one by the back door for brushing in the yard and one in my waist pack for dog walks brushing outdoors means less fur in the house. Use a rake brush with an easy-to-grip handle to avoid letting the brush slip and fall on your dog. Try this undercoat rake brush which promotes a lustrous coat while gently lifting dead hair. The Zoom Groom brush works great for getting shampoo and conditioner onto the skin of thick-coated German Shepherds. Massaging bristles work through deep undercoats to work products into the coat and hair without discomfort. With gentle rubber tips, this tool is also perfect for dry brushing German Shepherd puppies! The wet and dry brush is a convenient tool to keep on hand for times when you need both a brush in the bath and after the bath. The dual-sided pin brush allows you to comb through thick areas of fur and offers your dog gentle brushing for longer grooming sessions. First, remember to brush through the coat with the pin side to loosen and remove dead hair. The pin brush works best after using the undercoat rake since the undercoat rake removes so much fur first. This is the pin and bristles brush that professional groomers prefer to use. The metal comb is great for clumped hair and providing fine debris removal. Use this inexpensive, durable Andis metal comb because it glides through the fur without harming the skin. What do I mean? Try it for yourself. The glove is embedded with soft rubber tips that remove tangles, massage the skin, and is generally well-tolerated and even enjoyed by German Shepherd puppies. But, you should have the right tools on hand since your German Shepherd puppy will lose their puppy coat soon. Their adult coats will grow in quicker than you think! The adult coat that grows in generally begins to show in his tail and the middle of his back first but will continue to change at 5 and 6 months old. This avoids later stress once you brush them with the grooming glove less frequently or their coats need a more in-depth brushing. Some GSD owners overlook routine care for their dogs. The German Shepherd Dog GSD is an all-around canine superstar, excelling in multiple roles ranging from police dog to family companion. But do you know how to keep your GSD well-groomed and looking their best? As owners, it's our responsibility to keep our furry friends healthy while looking and feeling their best. One way to do this is through proper grooming. In this blog post, we'll discuss the basics of grooming a German Shepherd. German Shepherds have a thick double coat that requires regular grooming to maintain their health and appearance. It's recommended to groom them at least once a week to remove loose hair, dirt, and debris. GSDs do shed, so one of the first things nearly every breeder will tell you is to invest in a good vacuum cleaner! But there are several ways to cut down on the shedding. If you decide to welcome a German Shepherd into your family, you must be prepared to devote time to the ritual of grooming them. As a dog lover, it's in your best interest to do your research on the dog breed. A thorough brush removes dead and loose hair from their coat, helping to keep the fur healthy and shiny. Best of all, regular grooming strengthens the bond between you and your dog and is a pleasurable experience for both of you. A German shepherd without an undercoat has the same degree of feathering, but the outer coat is softer and not as coarse. Dog hair varies by breed, but also from dog to dog. A German Shepherd's coat is unique to the dog itself. Longer haired German Shepherds will require much different grooming tools and techniques than a German Shepherd dog with shorter hair. Their thick double coats require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangling. This also helps remove loose hair and dirt, keeping your dog's coat clean and shiny. There are so many dog brushes on the market. A slicker brush, pin brush, and undercoat rake are some of the most commonly used brushes for German Shepherds. Having the right grooming tool for German Shepherds is key. A good grooming brush for German Shepherds will keep the German Shepherd's fur healthy, removing loose fur and dead hair when used on the dog regularly. However, it's important to not over-bathe them as it can strip their skin of natural oils. A good rule of thumb for a German Shepherd owner is to bathe your dog every few weeks, or as needed. Be sure to use a gentle, dog-specific shampoo, and rinse thoroughly to avoid any skin irritation on the outer coat and the dog's skin. A dog's hair can benefit from trimming. To keep your pup comfortable, minimize shedding, and remove loose fur, it's a good idea to trim the hair around the ears and paw pads regularly, or bring them to a groomer for proper technique. This can be easily done with a pair of scissors or clippers and the best grooming tools. It can also help with the excessive shedding and help keep your dog clean. So shaving them can actually cause harm. It can also cause skin problems. Many dog owners do not know this. Overgrown nails can cause pain and make it difficult for your dog to walk or run. You can use a professional-grade dog nail clipper or a grinder to keep your dog's nails trimmed. For some dogs—particularly those with thick nails—you can use a Dremel tool for nail grinding in addition to clippers. A healthy diet can also be a factor in maintaining good ear health in German Shepherds. Brushing your dog's teeth with a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste is a great way to keep their dental health in check. You will notice many more loose hairs during the shedding seasons. Heavy shedding happens in spring to allow the dog to get rid of their winter coat so that they will not overheat during the warmer weather. Indoor-dwelling German Shepherds may not shed as heavily as outdoor dogs. Many German Shepherd owners report that their long-haired dog sheds less than their short-haired relatives. But why is that? That means less hair on your furniture, but it also makes your dog more susceptible to developing mats in their coat. Also, although a short-haired German Shepherd is less prone to matting, you will find more of their hair on your clothes and carpets. Therefore, both long and short-haired German Shepherds require plenty of grooming, although for different reasons. Grooming your German Shepherd is an important aspect of being a responsible pet owner. Regular brushing, bathing, trimming, nail trimming, and teeth brushing will keep your dog looking and feeling their best. Remember to not harm their natural oils by over grooming your German Shepherd regularly. With the proper grooming tools and techniques, you'll be able to keep your German Shepherd looking great and feeling comfortable. From loose fur to dog hair on your clothes and furniture, you will need to invest in the proper de shedding tools and best brushes to combat grooming time in breeds that shed year round. Your German Shepherd should be brushed times a week, eradicating any loose, dead hairs and keeping the fur soft and shiny. Like other breeds, you should be careful of overbathing your German Shepherd, too many baths can cause dry, irritated skin which leaves them exposed to other health issues. With the German Shepherd breed you should also be checking their paws and claws at least once a week, otherwise you could be leaving your pup prone to injury. This is often only necessary every few months, for a dog that has healthy skin and a healthy coat. Start by making sure your German Shepherd is comfortable, get them to lay down without their collar. From their neck take a slick brush and run it down the course of its back, all the way to their tail, in the direction that his coat grows. Repeat this until little to no hair is shedding through the bristles. Get your German Shepherd to roll on their side, brush their belly gently only ever going with the grain. Interweave these regular brushes with a more indepth, intense deshedding brush to make sure you leave no loose hairs on their undercoat that could matt and cause them problems. Having your dog groomed on a regular basis and brushing them daily goes a long way in maintaining their coat and keeping shedding to a minimum. German Shepherds Dogs should visit a professional groomer at least twice a year, during their shedding seasons. Most owners of long-haired German Shepherds have them groomed every 1 to 2 months, and owners of shorter-haired German Shepherds have them groomed every 3 to 4 months. There are a range of benefits to having your dog groomed regularly. Professional groomers have all the right tools to do the job thoroughly and efficiently. Some even offer mobile grooming services. While German Shepherds are quite high maintenance in terms of their grooming needs, too frequent bathing and clipping their coat should be avoided. The Benefits Of Professional Dog Grooming Having your dog groomed every few months keeps them smelling and looking great. It helps to maintain a healthy, glossy coat, and for German Shepherds it can make a huge difference in minimizing shedding. Many German Shepherd owners agree that regular grooming helps to keep the amount of dog hair around the house down. They have all the right brushes, tools, and products. Try to find a groomer with lots of dog handling experience to get the job done efficiently and safely. Some owners insist on grooming their dogs themselves using professional tools. While this may save money in the long run, owners must be dedicated to learning how to use grooming tools correctly. Professional groomers keep your dog healthy, by expressing their anal glands something many owners are not comfortable doing themselves , cleaning their ears and eyes, brushing their teeth, and trimming their nails. Experienced groomers check your dog thoroughly for parasites, like ticks and ringworms, or any small injuries, lumps, or patches of dry skin. German Shepherd Grooming Requirements If you are considering getting a German Shepherd, you should be prepared for what you are getting yourself into in terms of their grooming needs. They are year-round, prolific shedders. Their topcoat constantly sheds stiff, guard hairs. And twice a year, in the fall and spring, they shed their entire fuzzy undercoat. German Shepherds have a specialized double coat that naturally insulates, keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer. Their skin produces oils that coat the hairs, keeping their fur healthy and glossy. Bathing them too frequently can remove these natural oils, and lead to dry, itchy skin, hot spots, and other skin issues. It is best to only bathe your German Shepherd when they are filthy, and at most every months. German Shepherd breeders generally only wash their dogs once or twice a year. Breed experts recommend against clipping, trimming, or shaving their coat, as it is very slow to grow back, and it diminishes its insulating properties. If you do not keep up with daily, or at least every other day, there will be balls of undercoat all over your home, and they can develop mats of fur and debris that cause skin issues. German Shepherds have very thick nails. If they do not walk on rough surfaces to wear them down, they can grow too long. Groomers use a Dremel tool to expertly file down their nails. Experienced groomers know how to do this safely and easily, so that it does not have to be a bad experience for your dog. If your dog has not gotten unreasonably dirty, it is unnecessary for the groomer to bathe them. They could just get a very thorough brushing and have their teeth and ears cleaned, for example. Mobile grooming services charge slightly more for the convenience of driving to your home. This is an easy way to keep your dog looking their best. Do not worry if you do not have a bathtub or backyard for the groomer to use as a workspace, most mobile grooming services have their own, fully equipped dog salon on wheels. Some cities have DIY grooming parlors. This is a great option to cut down the costs of regular grooming. It can get quite costly to groom your German Shepherd so frequently. German Shepherd breeders and other breed professionals from the American Kennel Club report only bathing their dogs once or twice a year at most, when they go to conformation shows. It is up to you to decide how often you would like your dog groomed. If one or two grooming sessions a year fits into your budget, this is perfectly sufficient for your dog. Find The Right Groomer For Your German Shepherd Leaving your beloved German Shepherd alone with someone else is a big deal, so you want to be sure you find a groomer that you trust and feel comfortable leaving your dog with. The best way to find a good groomer is to ask your vet for a referral. They know reliable local groomers who are certified and have lots of experience. Find out if a groomer is comfortable working with large dogs, like German Shepherds. The breed has a reputation for being aggressive and dogs can behave unpredictably when they are with a stranger, getting a bath or blow dry, so some groomers are fearful. Check if a groomer knows the breed standards and specific grooming requirements for German Shepherds. You do not want to risk an inexperienced groomer giving your dog a bad haircut. Feel free to enquire if you can view their facilities. Ask about their training and credentials, how they house dogs, and if they have access to plenty of drinking water. Ask what their policy is in case of emergency, or accidental injury, or if you can watch while your dog gets groomed. None of this should be a problem. Get Your German Shepherd Used To Grooming Make going to the groomer a positive experience for your dog by giving them lots of treats and praise good, calm behavior. If dogs develop a negative association with grooming, it can make the job quite difficult. Get your German Shepherd used to getting wet, and having their feet, teeth, ears, and face touched from a young age. Socialize them well around bathtubs, scissors, nail clippers and blow dryers. It is especially important to get them used to being brushed. This will make grooming them much easier as they get older. It is possible to teach older dogs that are not used to being groomed to keep calm during grooming, but it takes extra time, patience, and loads of treats. They will come around eventually. Although they are not a breed that require their coat to be clipped or trimmed regularly, they do need to be brushed with a de-shedding tool on a consistent basis. You should brush them at home every day, or at least 2 or 3 times a week. You only need to take your German Shepherd to a professional groomer or have them come to you once or twice a year. If your dog sleeps on your bed or climbs on the couch, you may want to have them bathed and groomed more regularly. Every two months should be sufficient for long-haired German Shepherds, while every three to four months should suffice for shorter-haired ones. There are so many benefits to having a professional groomer work on your dog. Not only do they make them look and smell great, but they also keep your dog healthy by expressing their anal glands and checking for lumps, small injuries or patches of dry skin that are indicative of health issues.

The coat blow takes place over several months, sometimes coming out in clumps. This is a natural process, but you can take steps to speed it up and help your puppy mom recover her full, shiny coat. What Causes Coat Loss? A dog's hair goes through periods of growth -- growing and resting. When a bitch is pregnant and nursing her puppies, hormone changes cause her hair follicles to enter a resting phase in order allow her to nourish her puppies. This resting phase, the telagen phase, causes the coat to shed to make way for new coat growth, the anagen stage. When puppy care is complete, her body redirects itself to the growth phase, and the new hair growth pushes out the old coat at a faster-than-normal rate. Speeding Up the Shed Once your dog's coat begins to shed, brush her daily. This will help remove the old coat and keep it from accumulating around your house. Fill a spray bottle with water and mist your dog's coat lightly before you brush. It eliminates static and keeps the new coat from being damaged while it grows. This will relax her hair follicles and help them release the old hair faster. Brush the dog before and after the bath. You will notice that she sheds more hair for several days after a bath. In a month to six weeks, you will notice the new hair growing, although it can take up to several months for her coat replacement to be complete. Feed for Coat Help your dog's body recover from pregnancy by feeding a high-quality dog food. Add supplements that will aid her coat growth, such as those containing omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon oil or krill oil made for canines are a good source of fatty acids for skin and coat. Consult your veterinarian to establish a feeding program to meet your dog's needs. Overfeeding supplements can be harmful. Your vet will help you determine the correct amount. Herbal Help Herbal compounds can help promote hair growth. Look for supplements that contain kelp, evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil or lecithin. Introduce any new supplement gradually to your dog's diet. Add a small amount each day over a week to reach the full dose, and use supplements designed for dogs. Consult your vet before administering supplements and if your dog develops problems such as diarrhea or vomiting. Doodle coats will start to thicken and mat at that point and this is the time to start grooming. The Consequences of too Many Baths for Labradoodles If you wash a Labradoodle too frequently, we risk damaging their adult coat. The coat needs time to grow and develop properly. If you wash your dog too often, you could damage its natural protective oils and leave it feeling rough and scratchy. The likelihood of skin irritation or reaction to cleaning equipment also increased with an over-washed coat. Dry skin, loose hair, and irritated skin need to be monitored. Realistically this will not be a concern for most of us. Our Labradoodle Max does visit the beach often, so he gets washed in Summer FAR more frequently than the other times of the year. We try to efficiently wash him using safe and gentle shampoo — but cut down the repeat lathering. When winter comes round, he bathes far less frequently — but we use more shampoo and later more when he does wash. A happy gray Poodle and Doodle dog. Their fur looks dull and lifeless. A dog needs to learn how to take baths, shampoo, conditioner, wash rags, brushes, and blow dryer. It takes time and effort to teach a dog everything he or she needs to know about bathing. Start with a few short baths then gradually increase the frequency. Be patient. Dogs and puppies can take many different attempts to understand and learn a new concept. Should you blow-dry a Labradoodle coat? Start by using a gentle hairdryer setting. I know this sounds ridiculous as even the quiet settings are often very intense. But as possible, build up the settings slowly. Start with the outside of the legs — most dogs tolerate this the most. Then dry the legs. Save the head, chest, and face for the very last. The restraint is calming a bit and safe and makes maneuvering around a displeased Labradoodle much easier. It is the only area that requires you to have a little extra knowledge and to be cautious. Labradoodle puppies with wool Labradoodle puppy coats are mainly non-shedding and can make great companions for pet owners with allergies. Fleece Coat Doodles with a fleece coat require a little less maintenance than the other types of doodles, but they still need weekly brushing and plenty of TLC. A fleece-coated labradoodle is the result of combining a curly wool coat gene with the gene for a straight coat. Areas such as the ears and collar are particularly prone to getting matted, so be sure to pay close attention to these areas when you brush your fleece-coated labradoodle once or twice per week. Hair Coat A labradoodle with a straight coat has inherited most of its fur genes from its Labrador retriever parent. Something interesting about Labradoodles is that their Labradoodle puppy coats change as they get older, so your hair-coated labradoodle might get a wave to its fur as it gets older. While you can also take it to a professional groomer on a weekly basis, this can incur hefty grooming costs. Most labradoodle owners opt to take their dog to a groomer once a month or two and do regular adult coat maintenance themselves. Use the correct type of dog brush and be sure to get all the way down to the skin. Give your dog a brush before and after bath time. All puppies eventually lose their puppy coat to make way for their adult coat, this goes the same with Labradoodle puppy coats. You might find the new type of coat is totally different from the old coat. Coats and Generational Differences The amount of hair your dog sheds varies between puppies, but generational differences can also play a role. First-generation doodles shed slightly more than second-generation doodles, with multigenerational Labradoodles shedding even less. We genetically test each breeding parent to make sure the shedding genes are not passed on to the puppies in our training program. We adore the breed and have a wide range of Labradoodle puppies for sale to choose from, with different color and type of Labradoodle puppy coats. We can even deliver a fully trained doodle puppy direct to your door if you like! Causes of hair loss in pets Fleas One of the main causes of hair loss in dogs and cats is fleas or other parasite infestations. If your pet has unwanted guests in their coat the most commonplace that you will notice thinning of the hair or baldness is around the back end and tail base. Anal glands Another cause of hair loss, particularly in dogs, is full or blocked anal glands also known as anal sacs. Traumatic alopecia Any persistent itchiness or inflammation that causes your pet to scratch can lead to hair loss in dogs and cats. Therefore, we commonly see hair loss associated with allergies like certain foods, pollens, or flea bites. But sometimes the cause of hair loss is not related to itchiness or inflammation — cats can commonly pull their fur out by overgrooming, which mainly occurs as a result of stress or anxiety. Both dogs and cats can be affected, showing thinning of their hair coat, round bald patches, or crusty lesions. Beware though, as cats can be carriers without showing any signs. It is present in a healthy dog but in small numbers. The presence of the Demodex mites within the follicles will cause bald patches, often around the head and paws. Alongside skin and hair coat changes, you may notice increased thirst, increased appetite, weight gain, and panting. However, sometimes these glands can go into overproduction, which can leave your dog with a greasy or oily coat. This is often combined with increased turnover of skin cells and is known as seborrhea or seborrheic dermatitis. Despite the increased production of oil, the coat is not always greasy. It can sometimes be dry, and there is often flakey skin or scurf present. If your dog has seborrheic dermatitis, you might also notice a smell due to bacteria and yeast thriving in a coat affected by seborrhea. Some dog breeds are prone to seborrhea, and they may have it from a young age. Other causes can include contact irritations from shampoos or other chemicals, skin allergies, and other causes of inflammation. Yeast overgrowth If your dog has an overgrowth of yeast commonly a yeast called Malassezia on their skin, you will notice a particular smell around them. It can also make your dog intensely itchy. Other causes of greasy hair coat Other less common conditions that can cause greasy and flakey skin include hypothyroidism low thyroid hormone , bacterial skin infections pyoderma , and certain types of tumors or cancer. Some of these techniques include: Coat brushing If they suspect fleas may be the cause, one of our veterinarians might brush the coat with a flea comb, collecting the hair and any debris onto a wet cotton wool swab. If there are fleas, the flea dirt will dissolve on the wet cotton wool leaving a red stain. Sometimes, parasites can be seen on the hair itself, however, sometimes the hair needs to be sent to the laboratory to check for conditions like ringworm. Skin scrapes A skin scrape is often used to look for parasites like the Demodex mite or ear mites, and as traumatic as the name sounds, it actually only involves gently removing the surface layers of cells from the skin with a scraping motion. Once we have a sample of skin cells on a microscope slide, we can use the microscope to check for parasites. Skin biopsy Your veterinarian might need to take a small sample of skin under anesthetic. This can be looked at in detail by the external laboratory team who will be able to recognize patterns that might suggest a bacterial, hormonal, cancerous, or allergic cause. How are hair coat issues treated? What can I do at home? Although it can seem obvious to bathe your dog or cat! Skin supplements like cod liver oil and other sources of omega 3 and 6 and essential fatty acids can be helpful to maintain the skin barrier, preventing infection. Other specific skin supplements may contain vitamins A, B, D, and E, as well as anti-oxidants. Shampoos Following advice from one of our vets, the best management may be a medicated shampoo. For allergic conditions, a hypoallergenic or mild shampoo would be recommended, whereas for a yeast overgrowth there are antifungal shampoos. Seborrheic dermatitis can be successfully managed by using specialized shampoos that can loosen the crusts and remove some of the oil without irritating the skin or making it dry and encouraging more oil production. Conditions like ringworm and Demodex can also require topical treatment in the form of a medicated rinse. What can I do? In some cases, the same shampoo formulation is available as a foam, spray, or wipe alternative. Antibiotics If your dog or cat has a skin infection, your veterinarian might prescribe a course of antibiotics. Because the skin is made up of many layers, an antibiotic course for skin infections can last several weeks. Anti-itch and anti-allergy medications There are medications including steroids and non-steroidal medications that can reduce itching and inflammation of the skin. If your dog has an allergy, or their skin is inflamed and irritated, these medications can be used to break the itch-scratch cycle, giving the skin time to heal. They are often available as injections and tablets, so ask one of our team if you think you might struggle to give your pet tablets. Parasite treatments There are various types of parasite treatment available these days, to make it as easy as possible for you as pet parents. If you find tablets tricky, there are often alternative spot-on treatments that might be easier. It would be best to check for signs of fleas or flea dirt, as a simple flea treatment could cause resolution. Pop your pet into our clinic for an examination and one of our team can decide the right way to help. How do I prevent dog hair loss? How urgent is dog hair loss? Whilst not being an emergency, hair loss in your dog or cat could indicate parasites, which could worsen without treatment. There may also be pain or discomfort associated with certain causes of hair loss, so it is a good idea to get them checked by a veterinarian within a few days. You will usually notice other signs though, such as drinking and urinating excessively. Conclusion There are many possible causes of dry, greasy, crusty, hair coats and hair loss. If your pet is up to date with parasite control, or there are no signs of fleas, the best idea is to call our clinic and make an appointment for an examination with one of our veterinary team. Then, hopefully, your pet should soon be back to looking and feeling their best.

Deciding you want to purchase a pug puppy is exciting. However, you want to make sure you find the right puppy for you. Make sure you seek out reputable breeders so your puppy does not come with any health problems. Visit the puppies in person and choose the one that suits your needs. Ask the breeder plenty of questions about the puppy's current health and pedigree. Before bringing your new friend home, make sure your house is puppy proofed. All rights reserved. This image may not be used by other entities without the express written consent of wikiHow, Inc. Pug puppies come with a unique set of needs. Puppies in general require more care than an adult dog. Before embarking on your journey to find a pug puppy, consider whether you can accommodate one at the moment. Make sure you have time for a puppy. Puppies need extra feeding, as well socialization and training. If you have a very busy schedule, you may want to wait for things to settle down before getting a puppy. Pugs, as a pet, require some maintenance. The folds in their faces need regular cleaning, and they're also prone to a great deal of shedding. Make sure you can live with frequent grooming, and accept the fact your house will never quite be hair-free. Like all breeds, pugs are prone to certain health problems. While a good breeder is adept at breeding out such problems, there are certain problems that are hard to breed out. These are usually simply due to how a pug is built. Learn the risks associated with pugs and make sure you're prepared to deal with them down the road. All pugs, regardless of breeding, are prone to eye problems. Pug's distinctive, bulging eyes expose a large area of their corneas, which puts their eyes at risk of drying out or forming ulcers. You may have to deal with frequent vet visits to deal with eye issues. Pugs are very prone to overheating because their flattened faces makes it hard for them to breathe. This problem can be even worse in hot weather, and overheating can cause serious health issues for a pug. Behaviorally, pugs are a more social breed. They are more prone to separation anxiety issues than other breeds. If you're gone a lot, a pug may not be the right dog for you. When searching for a breeder, there are a few places to scratch off your list right away. Puppy mills and very obviously bad breeders should be avoided. You're more likely to get a pug with existing health problems, or the risk of developing health problems down the road. In general, do not trust a breeder who simply sells dogs online from any given buyer. A breeder who does not ask any questions is probably not a good breeder. Responsible breeders want to make sure their dogs go to good homes. Puppy mills sometimes sell puppies to pet stores, so avoid buying a pug from a pet store. Puppy mills may also sell pugs online. If you can simply look at a picture of a puppy and purchase it, this is probably a puppy mill. Start your search locally. If you're lucky, you will be able to find a breeder who lives nearby. Look for ads in the newspaper, online, at local pet stores and veterinary clinics, and at any local pet clubs. A breeder in your area is convenient, as you will not have to travel far to see the puppies. Just because someone is a local breeder, do not assume they are an ethical one. Make sure to visit any breeder in person and look at the puppies physically before purchasing one. Unfortunately, not all areas have pug breeders close by. In some cases, you may have to travel to meet and select a puppy. There are many places you can look online to locate the nearest pug breeder. The Pug Dog Club keeps a list of reputable breeders online. You can search for the closest breeder there. The American Kennel Club also has a database of dog breeders. You can search there by breed. Remember to have patience. Even if you find a good breeder relatively close to you, they may not have puppies available for a while. You may have to wait a few months before taking home your pug puppy. Call a few breeders during your search. Pay close attention to your interactions. Learn the signs of a good breeder. Only work with breeders who are responsible and care about their dogs. Their facilities should be clean and spacious. They will be flexible in scheduling a time for you to see the puppies. A solid breeder will usually only breed one type of dog, or only a few types of dogs. The breeder should be very knowledgeable of pugs. During your initial conversation, the breeder will want to go over some basic pug care information with you. Good breeders do not have anything to hide. Not only will the be willing to let you see the dog's pedigree and meet their parents, they will actually encourage this. When you select a breeder to meet up with, make sure to ask a variety of questions. You want to make sure their puppies are a good match for you and your home. You also want to make sure the breeder is responsible and that the puppies are in good health. Interacting with a dog's mother and father can give you a sense of your puppy's future temperament. Ask questions about the breeder's credentials. Ask how long they've been breeding pugs. A more experienced breeder is more likely to produce healthier puppies. Ask about the puppy's parents. Make sure the parents do not have any inheritable diseases. Ask if you can see the health certificates for the parents on request. You should also ask about what treatment the puppies have received. Have they been vaccinated or de-wormed? Have they been spayed or neutered yet? When you get a chance to interact with the puppies, look closely at the puppy's you like. Pugs are prone to certain abnormalities. You can detect a potential issue by examining the dog's eyes, as well as how it breathes and moves. Watery eyes, squinted eyes, or glazed over eyes are signs of poor health. Hold the puppy close to you to hear it breathe. Raspy, labored breathing is generally a bad sign. Watch the puppy moving and at rest. It's not uncommon for pugs to breathe through their mouths when running around. However, a resting puppy should be able to comfortably breathe through its nose. There should be no signs of limping or an uneven gain if the puppies are old enough to walk. If you notice a puppy walking funny, listen for a clicking noise from the hips. This indicates the dog may develop hip problems later in life. As you interact with the puppies, aim for one with a good temperament. You want a puppy that's not too shy, but also one that's not overly rambunctious. You want a puppy that allows you to pick it up without squirming. A very aggressive or very standoffish puppy can be a problem. Once you've selected two or three pugs you like, request one-on-one time with them. You want a puppy that is friendly away from its litter. A friendly puppy will wag its tail, allow you to pet it, and look at you when you talk. A good breeder will be as scrutinizing of you as you are of them. Breeders want to make sure their dogs go to good homes, so don't be put off if a breeder asks you a lot of questions. This is a good sign. The breeder wants to make sure you will take good care of the puppy. They will also want to know about your general lifestyle and how you plan to care for the dog. If this is your first pug, don't panic. A breeder is unlikely to reject you simply because you don't have specific experience with pugs. As long as you've done some research on the breed, the breeder will probably be willing to sell to you if you're responsible. A good breeder will always be willing to provide this information. After selecting the puppy you want, ask for its pedigree as well as a certificate of health. These papers should assure you the puppy is in good health, and that its family tree is relatively free of inheritable conditions. Puppies need frequent vet visits. You should have a certification on hand showing what vaccinations and other treatments your dog has already received. As you prepare to bring your puppy home, make sure you're ready. Your puppy should enter your home with all the supplies it needs to thrive ready. You will need the following: [7] X Research source A crate to transport your puppy home and for crate training later Bedding Collar, leash, and identification tag Toys Grooming supplies i. You want to make sure your pug cannot get into any dangerous substances or places. Make sure all electrical wires are covered or out of reach. Keep things like household cleaners and detergents out of reach. Place them in high kitchen cabinets. Prevent access to staircases, as young pugs can easily slip and fall on the stairs. A good breeder will present you with a contract prior to purchase. This outlines your basic responsibilities and the breeder's return policy. Read the contract carefully before signing. If there's anything you don't understand, ask the breeder. You want the option of returning a dog in the event it has a health problem you cannot afford to treat. Once the contract is signed and your home is ready, you can bring your new friend home. You can now enjoy your pug puppy, and begin the process of training and caring for your new lifelong friend. Pug puppies are known for chewing everything around the house, whatever they find they will chew or try to eat it. If puppy proofing your entire house seems like an insurmountable task, create a dog space. You dedicate an area of your house solely for your Pug, preferably one that you and or your family frequent. You can secure this area by using the puppy fence. This not only keeps your puppy in a safe and protected area, it also helps to not overwhelm them. You should go through your home and look for anything that could be hazardous to your new Pug puppy. Electrical cords, choking risks, shoes or anything of the sort should be cleared out. You also have to be conscious of any dangling cords that your Pug could chew, trip over or worse. As soon as you put all of these in place, you are all set and ready to bring the newest family member home. Bringing home your Pug puppy The most efficient way to raise a well-adjusted, well-mannered Pug is to expose them to everyday scenarios and experiences as soon as possible. The first experience your puppy will have is the car ride home. You should make sure the breeder will not feed your puppy right before the car ride home to avoid stomach upset or vomiting. As mentioned above having your Pug puppy secured in a car seat will be the safest option. This is because consistency goes a long way in training a well-behaved all rounded Pug dog. Now that you have gotten home, resist the urge to spoil and over indulge your Pug. You should start training your puppy early and refrain from excessive scolding, use positive reinforcements, and lots of praises. Potty training your Pug puppy takes patience the easiest way is to take your puppy outside every half hour or so and encourage them to go. Bringing them to the same area will help them quickly understand that this is their pee area. Always give them a treat as soon as they pee outside. Continue to do this, and then gradually drop the treats and use only praise. If you are training your Pug to go indoors on pee pads, just do the same as mentioned above. How long do Pug puppies sleep at night? Pug puppies can sleep anywhere from 12 to 18 hours per day, only waking up occasionally for an hour or so every few hours of rest. It is best to develop a nighttime routine. If you wake up your puppy to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, you will develop this habit with your puppy. In adulthood your Pug might wake you up in the middle of the night and you want to avoid developing this habit if possible. It is best to establish a night time house training routine. Take your Pug puppy to the bathroom right before bedtime and immediately upon waking up. Puppy proof the outside of your home and garage Antifreeze taste sweet to your dog however can be lethal. November 19, iStock. Just look at them! These little dogs have wrinkly, happy faces and delightful personalities. Instantly recognizable for their smushed-in faces, expressive bug eyes and curlicue tails, the Pug dog breed can be traced back more than 2, years when they were the highly regarded pets of Chinese emperors. While Pugs undoubtedly are adorable and popular dogs, knowing a bit about the breed before bringing one home is essential to ensure that the pup will be a good fit for you and your family. While cute, their face shape requires some maintenance and are responsible for some of the health issues that Pugs tend to face. Pugs also are known to be prolific shedders, so managing their coats takes a little extra work. Invest in a good de-shedding dog brush and consider bathing your Pug with shed-control shampoo, like the Shed-X dog shampoo. Pugs Can Suffer From Breathing Problems Pugs can suffer from breathing issues associated with brachycephalic syndrome. Dogs with this syndrome have shorter noses than most dogs, and while this gives Pugs their adorable smushy-faced appearance, it also means that they must work harder to breathe than their longer-snouted brethren. Brachycephalic issues can include shortened airways, a narrowed trachea and nasal passages, as well as issues with the soft palate and voice box. Wylie says. Wylie also recommends walking Pugs on a dog harness to limit pressure placed on the upper airways and trachea. If a Pug sounds like the right fit for your family, Dr. Wylie recommends establishing a relationship with a veterinarian early on to see if your dog may need surgery related to brachycephalic syndrome. Pugs Are Prone to Weight Gain Pugs are hearty, muscular little guys, and they are prone to weight gain. There are foods, like the Royal Canin Pug dog food, specially formulated for Pugs to help them maintain a healthy weight. Wylie adds. By Kate Hughes. Caring for your Pug Pugs can be highly entertaining dogs due to their big personalities and clownish nature. They generally do well in family environments where they have lots of company all of the time as they love to spend time with everybody. Pugs and barking As with any dog, your Pug is likely to make noise in one form or another. How much your dog barks will be down to them as an individual. Training and socialisation When it comes to training Pugs, although they are a clever breed they can also be very strong willed. Training needs to be ongoing and firm but fair. You can start positive, reward-based training from day one, whether you get your Pug old or young. Exercise Pugs can be prone to gaining weight that can make breathing problems worse, so it is important to keep them active and avoid any weight gain. Your Pug will need up to an hour of exercise a day. This should include shorter walks, with extra playtime and lots of brain-stimulating activities. Several shorter walks throughout the day can help to stop them from becoming too tired or overheated, which is a great way to keep them active throughout the day. Keep a close eye on your Pug as they can tire easily due to their difficulties getting enough oxygen. As soon as you start to notice them struggling to breathe, stop and make sure they get enough of a rest. You will also need to avoid exercising them in the heat as this can cause even more problems since they can be at higher risk of heatstroke. Grooming Even though their coats are short, Pugs can still shed loads. Luckily, they tend to love being groomed as it means a lot of attention all on them. Pay close attention to the folds in their skin, as these are the perfect breeding ground for bacterial and fungal infections if left damp. You can teach your Pug from an early age to love tooth brushing and nail clipping so you can keep those pearly whites and paws in great condition. Pugs and children Pugs adore company and really love people of all ages. They often get on well with children, especially if the Pug loves to play. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and play with dogs with care and kindness, to prevent any issues. Always supervise children and vulnerable people with your Pug and make sure you can recognise the signs of unhappiness or anxiety in your dog to help avoid any conflicts. Pugs and other pets Pugs are known for getting along well with other pets and dogs. Introductions still need to be done carefully, though, just in case. Good, kind training will also help them become well-rounded dogs that keep calm in new situations. Your vet or vet nurse will be able to tell you how much your dog should be eating. If you give your dog an occasional treat or use treats for training, remember to take this into account and reduce their daily food allowance. You should try to feed your dog at the same time every day to get them into a routine. Remember to leave a gap after eating and before exercising. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. These breeders must do extra health tests and meet higher standards for breeding. See our advice on what you need to know about flat faced pets and how to choose a healthier pedigree pet. Set-up costs Puppy vaccines — if you rescue a dog, some centres will vaccinate them for you. Remember that ongoing booster vaccinations will be needed to continue their immunity. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around six months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will have already neutered the dogs they rehome where appropriate. Equipment — including a collar and tags, lead, harness, dog beds, dog bowls, pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes, grooming brushes and toys. Keep in mind that all these will need to be replaced with wear or if your dog outgrows them! Ongoing costs Food. Preventive healthcare — budget for routine vet visits to help stop your dog getting ill and catching any problems early. They need annual check-ups, vaccinations and regular flea and worming treatments. Check if your vet offers a health care plan as this can help spread the cost throughout the year. Accessories — including lots of poo bags, replacing worn toys and grooming accessories, buying doggy toothpaste and any other extras they might need. Other costs Training — basic training is very important and dogs can benefit from formal classes. Some dogs may have, or develop, behavioural problems which might need professional management. Boarding — you may also need to budget for boarding or dog sitting costs if you are planning to go away from home on holiday. If you are having difficulty with veterinary costs, you can check if you are eligible for treatment at PDSA here. A group of Pugs is called a grumble! Pugs are an ancient breed, dating back to Ancient China where they were bred for Emperors. Pugs were bred to be companions, which is why they love people so much. Getting a Pug Do plenty of research before you get a Pug. Although they are loveable and friendly, they are sadly likely to get a lot of health issues more so than many other breeds. Rehoming centres There are plenty of rescue centres across the country where you may find a Pug. Breed-specific rescues specialising in Pugs are out there too. Good rescue centres should let you know of any existing health and behaviour problems. Breeders If you buy from a breeder, make sure your puppy will have been well socialised and have all necessary health checks and vaccinations. We recommend looking for a Kennel Club Assured breeder as they meet higher standards. Not sure if a Pug is the right pet for you? I adopted Wilma quite quickly as I had the opportunity to save her from an undesirable situation. I instantly fell in love, but with little experience in owning such a breed there were a few surprises in store. Taking on a pug is a hella' lot of responsibility. It is particularly unfair to leave this breed home alone for long periods, so have a think about how much time you can offer, or if you can rely on anyone for regular doggy-sitting duties. Your clothes will never be the same again Fawn pugs have a double coat, and therefore malt. A lot. The days of stepping outside in a hair-less outfit are a distant memory. They eat like there's no tomorrow For such a small breed you wouldn't think they have a lot of room for food, but they damn sure MAKE room. Aaaand it goes straight to their waistline. Don't give in to their pleading little eyes. They know how to play you. These cute little wrinkles can harbour some pretty gruesome bugs, especially as pugs submerge their entire face into the food bowl at dinner time. Their ears need a clean too, I use doggy ear wipes. Dry it out thoroughly afterwards with a clean tissue. Conclude the session with a treat. They find it difficult to breathe Yes there are some health issues than come with the breed. Because of their shortened snout, their airways are obstructed. Most brachycephalic breeds flat-faced are not as healthy as their long-nosed peers. This is a big thing to consider as pugs will most likely need BOAS surgery nostrils widened and elongated soft palette cut back in order for them to live a more comfortable life. Always use a harness, and get a comfortable necktie so they can still wear their ID tag at all times. But, owning a Pug does come with some challenges. Since Pugs are prone to carrying excess weight, this brings in the care elements of both eating a healthy diet and following an appropriate exercise schedule; though this can be tricky, since Pugs must be exercised with care in regard to both duration and intensity. Pugs have thick coats of fur with heavy shedding, lots of wrinkles that need to stay clean, and are generally prone to skin sensitivities. This all requires proper grooming and upkeep. Aside from this, is the general care that applies to every dog. While many owners do this as part of the excitement and preparation of bringing a new pup into the household, this is something that should be done on a regular basis throughout your Pug's life. This can lead to accidentally swallowing things, toxic poisoning, or choking. Proofing the house involves removing small items from the floor, placing cords out of reach or wrapping them in cord protectors, finding new places for shoes and other objects that may be chewed, and placing child-proof locks on any lower cabinets that a Pug may be able to access. The Pug is prone to skin yeast infections, eye issues, and is a heavy shedder, so this a breed that requires lots of grooming. It is best to stick to a schedule in regard to these care tasks. Baths - Bathe you Pug once every 3 weeks, even if your puppy or dog does not appear to be dirty. This will help prevent bad odors , keep skin properly moisturized, and loosen dead hairs from the coat. Young pups can be given a bath in the kitchen sink and older adults can be placed in the bathtub. Because the Pug has sensitive skin, use a shampoo that has a pH between 6. A terrific shampoo to use on Pugs is Earthbath Shampoo which has plant-based cleansers and no additives. The Oatmeal and Aloe formula is ideal for just about Pug since it works to keep skin in great shape. Don't forget about a wash-out conditioner. Hair cuticles open during the shampooing process and a conditioner smooths them down. Eye maintenance - Pug's eyes are large and slightly bulging which means they are prone to picking up debris that can irritate the eyes or scratch the cornea. Small food particles are a top culprit. Keep the eye area clean by wiping it at least once a day and as often as after each meal. For this, you can use the same type of wipe that you have for your Pug's wrinkles see next tip. Wrinkle maintenance - Pugs have lots of deep wrinkles on their head and face making these areas prone to skin infection, so attention must be given to keep these folds clean and dry. Wipe the wrinkles at least once a day, and up to 3 times a day by opening each fold and wiping it with a grooming wipe. If you are looking for a good grooming wipe, Earthbath All-Natural Grooming Wipes are excellent for cleaning wrinkles, wiping the eye area, and to spot-clean a Pug in between baths. Brushing - Pugs are heavy shedders, a lot of the dead hairs will stay lodged in the coat and some will fall to the floor. So, even if you do not notice much shedding, it's important to brush your Pug on a regular basis. Young puppies can be brushed once a week, but adult Pugs should be brushed at least every other day and as often as once per day. Use a tool that will reach down through this breed's thick coat and pull out all the loose and dead fur. While you may be envisioning using a brush, a grooming glove like the Delomo Pet Grooming Glove works very well on a Pug's dense coat. This has over grooming tips that latch onto dead hairs and debris. Pugs are a brachycephalic breed that is very prone to breathing issues. Using a collar when on leash, which places pressure on the trachea, is near guaranteed to exacerbate this. So, part of caring for a Pug involves using accessories that do not impede breathing. For this reason, a harness should be used any time a Pug is on a leash. Harnesses displace tension over the shoulders, back, and chest, leaving the neck free. This is a step-in design just the front legs are placed through the holes, so nothing has to slip over the head , there is an easy-close adjustable Velcro flap on the back, and it is made with air-mesh to keep a Pug cool and comfortable. What you choose to feed your Pug will have both short and long-term consequences, affecting everything from weight maintenance to allergies to intestinal health. Pugs do best with a dry kibble as opposed to a wet canned food; a dry formula tends to keep stools firm and is better for the teeth. Puppies should be fed 3 times a day and this can transition over to twice per day at the 9-month mark. Several dry snacks should be given in between meals and moist treats can be given to reward good behavior such as house training and obeying commands. This breed generally has a very hearty appetite and this, along with their intolerance for extended exercise, makes it easy to gain excess weight. Pugs also tend to have sensitive stomachs and are prone to skin reactions from food additives. Therefore, aim to provide all-natural foods that have no chemical preservatives, no artificial flavoring or dyes, and no by-products, high grain counts, generic meats or oils, corn, soy, or other cheap fillers. If you are not sure what rating your Pug's current dog food has, a good place to check this is Dog Food Advisor which rates the quality of hundreds of brands. And, if you are looking for a good kibble, one recommended brand is Wellness Complete for Small Breeds. For snacks and training treats, Wellness offers several good choices in their line, and if you have an adult Pug and you are working on helping them keep off excess pounds, a good low-calorie option is Fruitables Skinny Minis Dog Treats. Pugs need to drink 1. The tap water in many regions of the US, the UK, Canada and other countries is either outright unsafe or improperly monitored. A number of studies have found drugs in tap water including contraceptive medications, Prozac, Naproxen, Ibuprofen and even illegal drugs; these contain fine particles that are not caught by municipal filtration systems. Other toxins include Chromium-6 a known carcinogen , fluoride which is toxic to canines , chlorite which can cause central nervous problems and HCB which can cause can cause liver disease and skin lesions. And, heavy metals are also an issue. So, for this care tip you can offer bottled spring water, a filtering device that connects your kitchen tap, or a more portable device like the Aquagear Water Filter Pitcher. Pugs are prone to bloat, a dangerous and potentially fatal twisting of the stomach. Raised bowls are a contributing factor, as well as eating or drinking too fast or too close to a bout of exercise. For this reason, place food and water in floor-level bowls. If your Pug tends to gulp down his food or water quickly, use a slow-feeder bowl. After eating a meal, do not take your Pug out for exercise for at least one hour. Another element to consider is that stainless-steel bowls are recommended since plastic bowls can cause allergic reactions to either the material itself or to dyes and tend to more easily harbor bacteria, fits the requirements of both height and material. When saliva and tiny food particles mix into water, this creates a slimy film in the dish, which can lead to a dog avoiding it. With food bowls, caked on food can lead to a buildup of bacteria and even mold. Make it a habit to wash both of your Pug's dishes with hot water and soap every day. Since dogs can be very protective of their bowls, a good time to do this is in the evening, after dinner or once your Pug has gone to sleep. Despite their reputation for being lazy, Pugs can have a good amount of energy. And, you'll want to meet this by keeping your Pug moving along, for several reasons: Exercise plays an important role in a Pug's physical health; it's good for the heart and lungs, regulates metabolism, helps maintain proper muscle composition, boosts the immune system, and can keep certain diseases at bay including canine diabetes and even some forms of cancer. Exercise also plays a vital role in a dog's mental health; it allows a dog to release any restlessness that bottles up and allows for desensitization and socialization to all outside elements. At the same time, too much exertion in either duration or intensity can lead to breathing difficulties or overheating for this brachycephalic breed. So, the goal for this care element is to exercise your Pug on a regular basis while keeping in mind your dog's limitations. Pugs do best with at least two walks per day. Each session should last a minimum of 20 minutes, but can extend to 45 minutes or even longer if your Pug is game. Breaks should be taken at the halfway mark of a short walk, every 15 to 20 minutes for a longer walk, or any time that a Pug is breathing noticeably heavier than normal. Bring your Pug into the shade and offer fresh water, ensuring that breathing is back to normal before starting up again. Light to moderate cardio sessions can also be added in, with a rousing game of fetch being the easiest to play and one that most dogs love. Pugs are sensitive to seasonal changes in temperature and some care elements will need to be adjusted. Summer - Hot humid weather makes summertime care a bit tricky with Pugs. Breathing issues are more pronounced and it's more difficult to keep a Pug active. It can help to take your little guy or gal for walks in the early morning and then later in the evening, avoiding the hottest parts of the day. You can help your Pug stay cool by offering lots of water and refreshing treats like frozen blueberries or raspberries. Stay aware of hot walking surfaces which can cause burns to a dog's paws. Take routes in the shade when possible and use a paw wax to offer a layer of protection. Another helpful care tip is to give your Pug a cooling mat to rest on. The Green Pet Shop Self-Cooling Pet Pad works by drawing excess heat away from the body, is self-activating you don't have to plug it in , and can be used both indoors and outdoors. Winter - Plunging temperatures and slippery weather conditions can make wintertime care a bit challenging as well. Fortunately, Pugs have thick coats which help them stay warm in the winter, but never-the-less, many don't like to go out when it's snowy and cold. And, even with dense fur, dogs that are outside for too long, particularly when it's below freezing, are vulnerable to developing hypothermia. So, continue to take your Pug out for their regular exercise sessions, but limit this on days with heavy winter precipitation or below-freezing temperatures. Another aspect to keep in mind is that arid winter air can lead to issues with dry skin. Be sure you are using a hydrating shampoo see care tip 2: Baths and apply a paw wax every two weeks to offer better traction and keep the paw pads in good shape. The Pug is prone to certain issues related to the joints, bones, and ligaments including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and Legg-Calve-Perthes. In addition to this, all dogs age 8-years and up suffer from some level of osteoarthritis and this is more common with breeds that have the aforementioned issues. For this reason, supplying your Pug with a quality bed to rest and sleep on that provides good cushioning and proper support for the body is vital. This should be an appropriately sized orthopedic memory foam bed with at least a 2-inch base. Either a flat mattress or a bolster bed will work and sometimes dogs do have a preference. Because Pugs tend to snore and may have other sleep-related breathing issues, like sleep apnea, being able to place their head on a bolstered cushion which helps extend the neck can be helpful. This also has a non-slip backing and the cover is machine-washable. There are lots of effective toys that can help your Pug in a number of ways and it's always better to have just a few that do their job than a ton that are ignored. Teething puppies need teething toys that help them scratch their itchy gums and soothe the discomfort of erupting teeth. Pugs of all ages that enjoy chewing should be given durable chew toys that they find pleasant to use, as opposed to looking to non-toy items in the house. Pugs that are home alone and suffer from separation anxiety can be helped with interactive toys that respond to them and a companion toy that helps ease feelings of isolation. Toys breeds and brachycephalic breeds are both prone to tooth decay, so that means that if you have a Pug you need to pay particular attention to keeping your dog's teeth clean and healthy. A build up of plaque, which eats away at tooth enamel and can travel under the gum line, can lead to terribly painful infections, tooth loss and more. Taking care of your Pug's teeth includes brushing the teeth with a quality canine toothbrush and effective canine toothpaste, or using a spray if your Pug is intolerant to brushings, and offering daily dental treats like GREENIES Dental Chews. Note that this applies to puppies as well, since decay on milk teeth can affect adult teeth that are waiting to emerge. Pugs should have their teeth examined by the veterinarian at least once a year during their wellness checks. An x-ray may be taken to look for any decay and if there is plaque or tartar present, this may require a 'full dental' which involves scraping the teeth clean. This is done with a dog under light sedation. Trauma is one of the leading causes of death for all puppies, the Pug breed included, and is a top concern for Pugs of all ages. Many instances of severe injury and death can be prevented by following some simple care tips: If your Pug has trouble navigating stairs most applicable to puppies and seniors , block these off with a gate. When outside, never allow your Pug to be off leash. Never allow your Pug to be in the yard unsupervised. If you have a puppy, do not allow anyone to handle him unless they have been shown proper handling techniques, which includes using both hands, one under the rump and one supporting the chest. Have young children stay on floor level to play with your Pug. Always be aware of where you are walking, especially at night, so that your puppy or dog is not accidentally stepped on or tripped over. If your Pug will be a passenger in your car, use a safe canine car seat or a canine belt restraint. These yearly for dogs age 1 and up or twice-per-year typically starting at age 8 visits are crucial for good health, prevention, and the best possible prognosis, should any issues be detected. The vet will perform a full physical examination to check for issues seen with canines in general and health issues specific to the Pug breed. Vitals will be taken temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate and your Pug will be weighed. The head will be checked eyes, ears, nose, mouth. The coat and the skin will be examined to look for any signs of concern. Proper posture will be assessed, knees and hips will be examined, and reflexes will be checked. A stool sample will be tested for possible parasites and a blood test will be run to evaluate overall health, flag any infections, and check organ function and electrolyte and protein levels. Senior dogs may have more advanced testing, including x-rays. During the visit, this is your opportunity to ask any questions; a good owner is an involved owner. The American Humane Association estimates over 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the US every year. Here are some tips to prevent this: If your Pug tends to run off, consider spaying or neutering. Intact dogs can have strong urges to take off, looking for a mate. If your Pug darts for the door as soon as its open, have a rule that everyone knocks before entering to allow enough time for someone to hold onto the dog. Consider having your Pug micro-chipped; dogs with chips are returned to owners at a much higher rate than those without. Have current photos of your Pug. If your dog does become lost, create 'lost dog' posters and bring these to all animal services and shelters within a mile area dogs are sometime brought to local shelters but send further away if there is over-crowding. Feeling Hot Hot Hot Like all flat-faced breeds, pugs sometimes have breathing issues. They do best in moderate temperatures that are neither too hot nor too cold. Here are some tips on how to help them stay cool. Their big eyes can lead to corneal ulcers or dry eye, their smushed face can lead to breathing issues, and their wrinkles must be cleaned. Trips to the vet for general check-ups are a must, along with regular grooming nail trims, wrinkle wipes, and ear cleanings. They live to eat, and are prone to obesity. Regular exercise and a healthy diet are super important, as is watching their weight. Always use positive reinforcement when training them, but definitely expect some push back. If so, what makes them great? The Ultimate Guide to Pets Share Sure, pugs are adorable, but they also have some unique characteristics. Here are some things to consider before you adopt one. When I first saw Rosie, I knew we were soul mates. She came bounding into the kitchen, tongue lolling and eyes bulging, and gave me a big wet pug kiss on my nose. I was hooked. Fast forward two days and I learned what a lot of new pug owners discover quickly: she never leaves my side. A few months later, I learned the breed has some other unique traits. So, before you decide to go pug wild here are 10 things you should know. They will follow you around everywhere. If you're someone who would get irritated by lap dog behaviour, think twice about getting a pug. Whether I'm taking a quick jaunt to the kitchen or a trip to the bathroom, Rosie is right by my side, curly tail wagging. And then when I sit down, she wants to be right up on my lap. They're prone to health problems. Pugs aren't health nightmares but "they can have a variety of health issues, which, if you're not familiar with, can lead to devastating results," says Blanche Axton, president of the board at Pugalug Pug Rescue in Toronto. Things to be watch for include: - eye scratches - a higher-than-normal tendency to react to vaccines - eye- and nose-fold care - breathing problems In short, pugs can be high-maintenance canines. Get familiar with their health issues and research their breeder before you adopt Fido. They need a lot of attention. Any dog needs your time and attention to be a happy pet, but many pugs require more face time than other dogs. They're not couch potatoes mostly. While they do enjoy naps, pugs thrive on activity, including regular playtime and walks. So if you work hour days, find a dog walker because a pug can't hold its small bladder for that long. They shed—a lot. Need proof? Come to my home and take a look at the carpet, couch, chairs, kitchen, clothes and bed…. They can be intrusive. Pugs are what I like to call "space invaders. They're smart. Just because they haven't been bred to be work dogs, doesn't mean pugs are stupid. Pugs can be trained just as easily as other dogs, including agility, scent detection, tracking and working with seniors. Axton recounts that she had a pug named Pete who, "ended up being a palliative dog, working with people who were at the end stages of their life. They can take time to house train. Pugs aren't fond of inclement weather, so you may have to deal with a dog that refuses to go to the bathroom during a snowstorm. Take the time to reinforce outdoor pottying, no matter how much they resist going outside Sticking to a schedule will help your pug learn what he or she should be doing. Remember, pugs respond to positive reinforcement, not punishment. Pugs are motivated by food, so give yours a treat and lots of praise when he or she goes potty outside. They will eat almost anything. I've seen Rosie eat sticks, gum, doughnuts, pasta noodles and even lollipops wrapper included. Pugs are food driven and they won't give up their treat easily if you're trying to get them to drop it. To avoid a trip to the vet, make sure not to leave food lying around. They're total love bugs. Once you get a pug, he or she will be your bestie for life. They love belly rubs, head scratches, giving kisses and snuggling with their human, and they will gaze at you as if you're the best person in the world. Give them the love they deserve and they will love you forever. I've had Rosie for two and a half years and despite her quirks, I don't regret having her in my life for a second. You could say she has me wrapped around her little paw. If you're looking to adopt or buy any dog, research the breed to avoid heartaches and headaches. Head over to the Pug Club of Canada, recommends Axton. Come prepared with questions, such as what the dog's temperament is like, what kind of health testing they've done and if they've seen any health problems with the parents. Or if your cat is anxious? History A good hint about where French Bulldogs originate is their name. The first French Bulldog was born in the s and was initially a hunting dog. Initially, the dogs were slightly larger. When England criminalized hunting sports, French Bulldog owners started breeding the dogs with smaller-sized terriers. As their size decreased, people found them excellent dogs for company. In fact, women working in Paris brothels loved French Bulldogs. Their high-status fate was sealed when a renowned painter, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec , made French Bulldogs a significant subject in many of his paintings. Wealthy people who bought the paintings also wanted to own French Bulldogs. They paid the best price to own these type of dogs. One thing has not changed; the French Bulldog is as much a status symbol now as it was in the s. If yes, it will cost you. French Bulldogs cannot reproduce naturally due to their physical inhibitions. The French Bulldog has short narrow legs and hips that make natural procreation very difficult. Breeding your French Bulldog means facilitating the costs and demands of artificial insemination. Once the pregnancy comes to term, the same physical limitations hinder the dog from having a natural birth. Therefore, you will be needed to cover the costs for a C-section. Other costs not factored in the breeding costs include: Ensuring a healthy, high protein diet for the dog mom during pregnancy and after pregnancy. Note that puppies require plenty of nutrients inside and outside the womb to guarantee health and longevity. You may also want to guarantee that your dog heals well and gets special care after birth. You will need to contact an experienced breeder whose job will be to keep a constant check on the dog and the puppies during the initial few days. Food Demands Ordinary dog food may make your beloved French Bulldog become overweight. If your dog quickly gains weight or is pregnant or sick, you must consider giving them a special diet. A French Bulldog eating an apple while looking up. Excellent Personality Their social nature and approachable demeanor make French Bulldogs the best dogs. Even as a new dog, the Frenchie takes quickly to its owner, other pets, people, and kids. It comes as no surprise because the dog is bred to give company. Should I hear my French Bulldog barking , I know right away, something is off! French Bulldogs, therefore, cost more because they are easy, convenient dogs. Going by the laws of demand and supply, French Bulldogs cost more because, compared to their high demand, there are fewer Frenchie dogs. The cost will go up if the test results show that the dog is ailing. Owing to their physical shortcomings, French Bulldogs suffer medical issues such as: Respiratory issues. Why are well bred Frenchies so expensive? Simply said, it is a matter of supply and demand. There are a lot of reasons for this, as we have come to understand. The French Bulldog is just not an easy dog to breed. First of all, very few French Bulldogs can breed naturally, mainly due to their narrow hips which makes mounting difficult. Because of this, most Frenchie females must be artificially inseminated. Secondly, Frenchies tend to have relatively small litters. The average litter of live births is south of four puppies, and litters of one or two puppies are very common. Thirdly, because of the relatively large head and shoulders of the Frenchie puppies in comparison to the size of the birth canal of the typical Frenchie mom, almost all Frenchies are delivered by C-section, which is a very costly procedure, especially at the ER Vet, which seems to happen quite frequently. And fourthly, new-born Frenchie puppies take a great deal of hands-on care and attention. New-born Frenchies need to be fed every 3 hours around the clock and they should not be left alone with the mom, at least for the first several days. Frenchie moms are generally very attentive and good moms, but there is a high probability that a mom will inadvertently rollover on one of her babies and smother it. When these things are taken into consideration, along with the normal vet bills, medicines, food, toys, play areas, shelters, and the hands-on attention that must be devoted to these dogs, breeding Frenchies gets to be an expensive and time consuming proposition. Even with these wonderful dogs selling in the thousands of dollars even for standard colors, the AKC says that a reputable breeder will do well to break even. There are puppy mills and other disreputable breeders out there that may offer to sell you a dog a little cheaper unfortunately, even many pet shops buy their dogs from puppy mills where the dogs are repeatedly bred, poorly socialized if at all, and rarely see the outside of a cage , but as with everything in life, you get what you pay for. And, of course, scamming has reached epidemic proportions, especially involving this very special breed. By the way, the reason that blues and chocolates and even more so, the extraordinarily rare pure coats, tan points, and lilacs are more expensive than standard color Frenchies is that there is a very high demand for these colors because they are so beautiful and they are relatively rare because they are created by recessive genes, which are naturally occurring but not common in Frenchies, which means that they must be inherited from both mom and dad. Based on our research and our own experiences, there are no inherent health problems associated with these rare colors, regardless of what some individuals might say who are prejudiced against them we also wonder if they are prejudiced against blue eyed and blonde or red haired people. In our humble opinion, Uptown Puppies is the most efficient and fun way to find your dream dog! Unfortunately, that popularity means there are tons of puppy mills and unethical breeders out there, too. Do you have white German Shepherd San Diego available near me right now? Because we work with passionate, experienced, professional breeders, businesses and fellow dog-lovers, we have a great track record of matching families with awesome puppies all over the US. Our MatchMaker process is what helps connect future dog-owners like you with our carefully selected, screened and approved companies and breeders who will set you up with your dream German Shepherd. Fill it out and return to us either by texting it, scanning and emailing or through regular mail. Remember that regular mail is slower and cause you to not get the spot you want if I get other deposits and contracts before yours. Once I receive your signed contract and your deposit, I will sign one and send one back. New-contract-June 15 We distribute the best dry food available for dogs and cats! Most people want to feed the best and LA is just that! Or if you will be taking home a puppy soon, make sure you buy a puppy start pack. The start up pack is on the same page as the food. Performance shows what the dog IS. If you wanted to ship your puppy, you would need to first come to our kennels and then ship the puppy out yourself. Or you can use a ground transportation company. By placing a deposit on a litter not yet born, please keep this in mind and be willing to move your deposit onto another litter at a later date. This allows us to offer puppies to pet homes at a more affordable price. You will still get AKC papers except they will say limited. If you bred a dog that was registered limited, then you would not be able to register the offspring. This limit however, can be lifted by the breeder. That said, while it can be done, I strongly urge anyone who lives in an apartment to think carefully about how much time and work it can be to keep a large, working dog in an apartment. I will not sell a puppy to anyone who lives in an apartment and leaves the dog home alone all day. At least one person needs to be home during the day. The dog needs to be taken outside to play at least once a day and taken for potty breaks many times EVERY day. Also, please check with your apartments rules on German Shepherds; some complexes do not allow them. New strains of the Parvo Virus are abundant and it is my job to keep puppies safe. I use a high titer Parvo Vaccine at 4 weeks but this may not protect all puppies. So please understand as much as you would like to visit with your puppies as they grow I can no longer allow this until they are 7 weeks. I will send out emails with pictures or videos weekly. No outside dogs are allowed at anytime. Thank you for understanding how important it is for me to keep the puppies safe. If you do visit other breeders, please do so on a different day that you visit. Von Ward Kennels will take back any puppy at any time in their lives if their owners can no longer care for them. Please never take a Von Wards dog to a shelter if you can no longer keep them. While most of our dogs are larger than the standard, we do have a couple of breeding females that are within standard.

Advice before making contact Tips and advice when contacting a breeder While we make every effort to ensure that the breeders listed on Perfect Pets are registered, responsible, and maintain high ethical standards, please take 5 minutes to read the advice below and also see our detailed information on finding a reputable breeder. Our recommendation is that you purchase pets locally and in person. For many reasons, it is always preferable that you meet and get to know the breeder and vice versa. While many reputable breeders send animals interstate safely and without issue, we do not encourage this. When you contact a breeder, keep in mind that responsible breeders will want some information about things like - the type of home you will offer, how much time you have for your new pet, if you have experience with the breed and if not, if you've researched the breed. Responsible breeders don't want to receive emails and messages that simply ask 'how much for a puppy? Please make sure the breed you are interested in suits your family and lifestyle, and that you can give it the type of home it needs to be happy. Above all - use common sense and don't be impulsive. Please ask the breeder these important questions: 1. Can you meet the mother and father, and how old are they? Have the mother and father had any health issues? What health checks and tests were done on the parents and grandparents, are they appropriate for the breed, and can this be verified with documentation? Specifically, what vaccines have been given? Are they microchipped and registered? Have they been treated for parasites fleas and worms , and what treatments were used? Have they been checked by a vet, and is there evidence of this? How much socialisation has the puppy or kitten had? If answered positively and appropriately the answers to these questions should reassure you that the puppy or kitten you're interested in will grow to be a happy healthy animal. Please note that information regarding breed specific health checks can at times be difficult to understand and interpret. Common genetic disorders are a serious and growing concern. It's not a bad idea to write down the information you've been given and seek advice from your vet for confirmation. Breed clubs are also great sources of information on health testing. A responsible and caring breeder will also want to make sure you are going to provide a loving and safe forever home, and will ask you lots of questions. They will also provide extensive advice regarding feeding, health, ongoing socialisation, and the long term needs of your pet. Please note that because Perfect Pets cannot be directly involved in interactions we cannot accept responsibility for any agreement entered into by a breeder and a pet buyer. Please follow the advice provided. Perfect Pets has no powers of enforcement and cannot guarantee the reputation of any breeder, or the soundness or suitability of the pet you choose. You must satisfy yourself that any pet you decide on is fit and healthy, and will fit with your family and lifestyle. Sites which have been shut-down by WA Scamnet Tips for avoiding pet scams Consider purchasing a pet from a rescue shelter or a registered local breeder with a legitimate physical address, landline number and ABN. Verify the breeder information and ensure you are contacting them through their registered contact details. Do your research. Meet the animal in real life before handing over any money. If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal which have avenues to dispute the transaction rather than a bank or wire transfer. Tips to avoid fake websites Be suspicious about: Great 'deals' served to you via an internet search or pop-ups - scammers hope to catch you out when you impulse-buy after seeing a bargain. Unfamiliar or new websites - look for a copyright year on the homepage, although this date can also be faked. Websites that do not list a full physical address, telephone number or ABN, or if these details cannot be verified. Insecure payment methods such as direct bank transfer or wire transfer. They have been wormed with quality vet products at 2,4,6 and 8 weeks of age, there feed with high quality dog food and given formula to help maintain growth when smaller. They are eating and drinking on their own, but I would urge that all new owners purchase the same dog food all info provided initially as changing diets will cause diarrhoea and it can very extreme.
