If you're thinking about bringing one of these magnificent dogs into your life, it's critical to understand the important differences between show line and working line German Shepherds. The breed's creator, a German army captain named Max von Stephanitz, sought to create a hearty dog that could enthusiastically perform rigorous jobs, repeatedly and flawlessly every time — while still returning home to serve as a loyal protector and companion for its family. Breeding for looks was a secondary goal. European German Shepherds, from breeders who specialize in working bloodlines, retain the characteristics sought after by the von Stephanitz and the SV. The dog must show the enthusiasm and capability to repeatedly work and perform a task in return for some kind of reward. Exceptional temperament. At this shelter, Rex suffered seizures, which are now well controlled with medication. Rex also suffered from irritable bowel syndrome a very messy condition , which requires prescription food and medication in order to be completely managed. The treatment and maintenance of these two chronic conditions meant Rex was unlikely to thrive in a shelter environment, but the rescue network saw that this could be a happy dog and connected him with Kingston Animal Rescue. At times, he could not move them properly, they would seize up, and he would drag his back feet until they were bloody or be almost immobile. The amazing animal loving community came together to help get Rex more care, so he went for a specialist visit to Ottawa. This meant the padding between two of his lower, spinal vertebrae was misplaced and being pinched. In early March, Rex had surgery to correct the compression. Following a successful surgery, he underwent rehabilitation to regain his strength and mobility; he was so lucky to find himself in a home dedicated to getting him back on his feet. Rex stabilized, his fosters went above and beyond to see him through each and every issue, which included a thyroid condition and aggressive arthritis. His medical regime requires attentiveness, and symptoms of different conditions will emerge from time to time, but his seizures, irritable bowel disease, pain, and thyroid condition have all found points of relative resolution. Rex medically had stabilized, so his move out to the country in the spring of was a chance for his personality to blossom. Rex has become more patient, engaging and has grown into a great companion in his long-term foster home. He plays with other dogs, diligently watches their chickens, and herds their daughter. Rex is almost never without a ball in his mouth and keeps up with the pack as they rush down to a nearby pond, the almost daily swim has been helpful for regaining mobility. There are several reasons for this, including: GSD puppies will begin teething as early as 2 weeks old, and this can be uncomfortable and even painful for them. This behavior can go on until your puppy is 6 months old, and they will chew on almost anything that they can find — including your hand — in an attempt to try and soothe their discomfort. Separated too young. The first 2 months of your GSDs life is vital to their socialization and learning, and if they are taken away from their mother and litter too young, this may cause a lack of understanding of boundaries. Puppies will play and learn with the rest of their littermates, where they learn to control the force of their bite. GSDs should be at least 8 weeks old before they are re-homed. Fear or overstimulation. Fear, anxiety, and overstimulation are common reasons for puppies to lose control of their bite because this can cause them to become irritable or defensive and lead them into the habit of biting. Conclusion Since German Shepherds are such powerful dogs, proper training is vital, and bite inhibition is an essential part of that training. Proper training is the vital first step and will set the tone for all other methods. Brush right to the skin with a stiff brush or rake. If the dog mats at this point she will have to clipped short by your groomer. Hair Coat The hair coat feels very similar to the hair on your head. It is unlike the feel of wool or fleece. The hair coat will shed. It requires little attention. Puppies will often look like they are going to have a fleece coat until the hair comes through the puppy coat at about eight or nine weeks of age.
