We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. Cody and Mandy had their first litter of puppies in .The puppies were all healthy and delightful. The experience was just as my wife remebered as a child and she was happy that our children were able to enjoy the same experience. It was rewarding to place the puppies in wonderful homes. The pleasure and excitment the families portrayed as they picked up their puppy was addicting. The friendships we gained were rich. Ginger, trained by Josiah, was the cleverest dog we ever had. We were planning to breed Ginger with Cody. In the summer of Ginger came into heat so we would put Ginger and Cody in seperate kennels, on a cement slab, when we went to town. We were waiting for her to be in midcycle to breed her. I came home at dusk, one night, and let her out and she immediatly disappeard. We ran for a flashlight and found her in Big Red's Kennel. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. Are These Dogs Good for Families? That way, they can always find someone to play with without overburdening a single person. This can cause issues if your other pooch likes to play with dogs, as many Golden Irishes will ignore their fellow canines to focus exclusively on a game of fetch or tug-of-war. The last thing you want is to start some sort of twisted love triangle between you and your two dogs. Once they sit down to eat, though, they can polish off a large amount of kibble in a hurry. We recommend giving them a high-protein, high-fat food to ensure that they have all the energy they need to tend to their affairs like chasing tennis balls , running back and forth in the backyard, and barking at that suspicious-looking stick across the street. You can give your Irish Setter Golden Retriever Mix treats, especially as training rewards , but be careful not to overdo it. If you can fatigue their minds, their bodies will follow, so anything that challenges them mentally is a good idea. As mentioned previously, these dogs will love to accompany you to the beach, and if you take a Frisbee or something along, you can both have a grand old time that will leave your pooch exhausted. In fact, we recommend it. Both parent breeds were designed to be hunting dogs , so these smart pups will learn commands in no time, and they love to be given a job. As mentioned, though, you need to stay positive during the training. The Golden Irish is not one of those breeds. These dogs have extremely long, dense coats and shed frequently. Irish Setter Golden Retriever Mixes do need their ears cleaned regularly, and you should dry them off when they get wet. The more these dogs swim, the more attention you should pay to their ears. Most of the time, the Golden Irish will not do anything aggressive or painful to the cat, but the chasing is something that your cat will not like. Stop this behavior as soon as you catch it. Things to Know When Owning a Golden Irish: Golden Irishes are a considerable investment because of how much time and energy they require. Because they love their humans so much, these dogs are really clingy, and they need to burn a lot of energy every single day. Instead, they are more driven by play and positive reinforcement by their owners. For this reason, Golden Irishes are not likely to become fat, and they are not bottomless pits. Feed your Golden Irish a high protein and high fat diet. This will provide them the energy they need to stay active. Most people recommend feeding a Golden Irish about 3 cups of high quality dry dog food a day. If you do not exercise your Golden Irish, it will exercise itself for you, most commonly by running laps in your house and making a mess. Just a walk around the block will not be enough for a Golden Irish. You need to provide them a lot of active exercises, such as fetch, jogs, or other tasks that burn a lot of calories at once. They are highly intelligent, love to learn, and love to please their owners even more. This is the perfect recipe for a highly trainable dog. Of course, you have to train a Golden Irish properly. Negative reinforcement does not work with this breed because they are so driven to please their owners. Negative reinforcement often causes this breed to avoid the task instead of learning how to do it correctly. This breed has a very long, dense coat that sheds frequently. If you want to manage the dog hair in your home, you should brush its fur once a day. The one good thing about their long, dense coat is that you rarely have to bathe them. You may need to give your dog a bath on occasion after it plays in the mud or some other particularly dirty occurrence. Other than that, the dog is very good at bathing itself. When carefully bred, they display the most desirable traits from each breed. Australian Bernedoodles are highly intelligent, gentle, and tend to be on the mellow side. While we do see stubbornness in some Bernedoodles, we typically do not see any in the Australian Bernedoodles. Australian Bernedoodles come in several different sizes and many will do well in most living situations, including apartments as long as they get exercise each day. Exact puppy choice happens by video interactions, exchanging photos, or through phone conversations at week six so their personality has time to develop. We will make every effort to help you make the best decision for your individual needs. For the health of the puppies, we do not allow visitors. Exact puppy choice begins on week six. Waiting this long allows us to get to know their personalities and help guide you to make the best choice. Choosing a puppy occurs in waiting list order. To facilitate all families making timely decisions, each customer has 2 hours from when we contact you beginning on week six to choose your puppy. Failure to choose within that 2 hours forfeits your turn, and you will move to the end of the line. The key is to let the puppy have the time it needs with its mother and siblings, and transition the puppy to its new family as soon as it is properly able, in order to bond with them early and well. This usually happens at around 8 weeks. By pick up time your puppy will not be dependent upon its mother since it will have been weaned starting around week 4. For the health of our family and animals, we cannot take back a puppy once it has left our home, but we can help you find a new home for them. Australian Bernedoodles are the main focus of the Sweet Pea Bernedoodle program. ALDs are bred to be stocky and square with heavier boning than Poodles. The ALD coats are wavy or straight the ones that we use which also gives us amazing low to non-shedding straight or wavy Australian Bernedoodle coats. Poodles have a very tight curl to their coat and this results in curlier coated Bernedoodles and a wider variety of coat-types in the litter. Doodle Generations The doodle lingo can be very confusing because there are all kinds of "generations" of doodles and various crosses that include more than one kind of cross. Generally speaking, most breeders of Bernedoodles are referred to as "early gen" breeders, this means that they don't often go too far past F2 breedings. Does one breed have more health issues than the other? To put it simply, puppies are only as healthy as their parents, no matter the generation, no matter the breed! Issues can arise in any puppy if their parents come from poor quality lines, have structural issues, or have not been screened for breed-specific diseases. A Multigen line in a relatively new breed still has so much gene diversity than your average purebred dog who may have had inbreeding or disease in their lines for hundreds of years. Some diseases, like Hip Dysplasia, can be brought on by environmental factors rather than genetics. Here's a quick breakdown of the Bernedoodle lingo you will find on this site note: We no longer use purebred Poodles in our program. This is a personal preference and does not reflect anything wrong with Poodles themselves. We prefer a more diluted Poodle temperament and a blockier structure of a Poodle cross than that of a pure Poodle. Doodle - Doodle is a broad term used to identify a Poodle cross of some type. The Prefix will denote the heritage of that doodle i. F1 litters constantly produce that traditional look if you have the parents that will produce the colors you are looking for.F1b- This denotes a cross back to an Australian labradoodle or a Bernese. This is generally done to a Doodle to improve coat quality but the result reduces the amount of Bernese in the dog. Knowing the heritage of the dog will tell you how much Bernese is in the breeding. Furnished - This is the "Doodle" look; puffy, fluffy everywhere! Unfurnished - Some doodles will not have the traditional fluffy doodle coat if the cross carries an incomplete coat IC , the same coat the Bernese has. Even F1bs can carry IC even though they are more doodle than Bernese. If I breed a litter that could be unfurnished I will test all the puppies for IC. This isn't something all breeders do so it is wise to ask if the puppies will be furnished. So, it will contain no genetic influence from the Labrador breed. These dogs might look quite similar, particularly if a later generation Labradoodle is used in the Bernese Labradoodle mix. Multigen Labradoodles are more likely to have similar curly fur to the Poodle, since this is such a desirable trait. However, if a first generation Labradoodle is used, a Bernese Labradoodle mix can look more Lab-like than a Bernedoodle would. Bernese Labradoodle Mix Appearance The exact appearance of a Labradoodle Bernese Mountain Dog mix will depend on the traits a puppy inherits from its parents. So, elements like coat color, coat type, height, adult weight, and even their overall shape can differ. Because of this, owners should be prepared for any outcome. But, overall the best way to predict how a puppy will look is to see what the parents are like. Size and Physical Characteristics The Bernese Mountain Dog is a giant breed that can stand anywhere between 23 and .Labradoodles are much smaller — even those that fall at the large end of the scale! On average, Labradoodles tend to grow between 22 and 24 inches tall, weighing between 30 and 50 lbs. A Bernese Labradoodle mix will likely fall somewhere in between these extremes. Some could be as small as the smallest Labradoodle, and others are large as a purebred Bernese. However, the majority will fall somewhere in between the two. Like most breeds, females will usually be smaller than males. On the whole, this mix will have a muscular appearance hidden under a lot of fur. Their ears will fall flat rather than standing erect. And they will have a long tail. Coat Type and Colors Labradoodles have three typical coat types. The hair type is the closest to the standard Labrador. Bernese Mountain Dogs have a dense, double layered coat. So, a Labradoodle Bernese mix could inherit any of these coat types. A Bernese Labradoodle mix will be the same. But there will be some natural variation between puppies, even of the same litter. Labradoodles tend to be friendly, lively, and playful dogs. They also need early socialization to encourage the friendliest temperament — particularly since they can be wary of strangers if they favor their Poodle parent. Bernese Mountain Dogs are typically calm, affectionate, and family-oriented. But, they can also be very loyal to their family. Whilst this can be a great trait, it also emphasises the need for early socialization. Socialization can help to prevent aggression and mistrust when your dog is facing new situations and meeting new people. Bernese Labradoodle dogs can take after either parent. Socialize them well from a young age to encourage the best possible personality. However, as a large mix, you should be careful about over-exercising them as a puppy. Too much high impact exercise too young can have a negative impact on their joints. This will provide some much-needed mental stimulation, as well as physical benefits. Training is another great way to provide mental stimulation. Training this mix from a young age is vital, as they will be large as an adult, and could accidentally hurt someone if untrained in basic obedience. Positive reward training will work best, as it will build on the strong bond you have with your dog. Plus, Bernese Labradoodles are usually very food motivated! Like socialization, positive reward training can start from the moment you bring your puppy home at 8 weeks.
