Your pup deserves optimal urinary and bladder health, and this product provides the perfect solution. It may take some time for the product to take effect. Here are some of the reasons why you could give your German Shepherd health supplements, along with how they may benefit your pup: 1. Joint health As German Shepherds age, they can experience joint pain and stiffness, making it difficult for them to move around comfortably. Joint health supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin help to reduce inflammation and support joint function. These soothing supplements may help your dog remain more active and mobile. Combine joint supplements with hip pain relief for your German Shepherd. Digestive health Many German Shepherds have sensitive stomachs and experience occasional digestive issues. Probiotic supplements can help improve gut health and promote healthy digestion. Skin and coat health Dry skin, itchiness, and hot spots are common skin issues for German Shepherds. Plus, dryness and itching are lessened, promoting a healthy, shiny coat. Supplements containing ingredients like chamomile, valerian root, or L-theanine can help calm dogs and reduce anxiety. Plus, puppies who find it difficult to wind down may benefit from calming supplements. Dental health Poor dental health can lead to bad breath, tooth decay, and other health issues. Dental health supplements containing plaque-reducing ingredients can help to clean teeth and improve overall oral health. Immune system support A strong immune system is important for defending against illness and disease. Brain health As dogs age, they can experience cognitive decline and memory issues. Supplements containing ingredients like DHA and EPA, found in fish oil, can help improve brain function and cognitive health. These supplements are also great for growing puppies to support their brain health. The most common methods to give supplements to your German Shepherd are: 1. You can mix powdered supplements or liquid drops into wet or dry food to make them easier to administer. Wet dog foods tend to hide the taste of powders and make it more appealing to consume the supplement. But many GSDs happily eat their dry kibble even with supplements added. Giving soft chews. You can also give supplements directly to your dog as treats. Soft chews are generally more treat-like for dogs, and German Shepherd puppies enjoy the soft texture. Administering a tablet or soft gel capsule. Another option is to provide supplements in the form of tablets or soft gel capsules. Wrapping a pill or capsule in a piece of cheese or meat can make it more appealing. Some tablets must be consumed whole to have the most therapeutic effect. When should I give my German Shepherd a supplement? Unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian, your growing GSD puppy does not require additional calcium. Most owners give joint supplements, omega-3 supplements, and probiotics to German Shepherds for a well rounded lifestyle. What supplements do German Shepherd puppies need? German Shepherd puppies generally need the following supplements:. Sometimes, supplements can do more harm than good. When should I start giving my German Shepherd puppy supplements? Most supplements can be given to your German Shepherd puppy as early as 12 weeks of age. The exception is calcium supplements, which you should never give to a puppy under 1 year old. Too much calcium can cause bones to develop too quickly, causing long term pain and joint damage. However, since German Shepherds are predisposed to developing joint issues, joint supplements are advised to be started as early as 3 months old. Keep in mind that giving supplements to your puppy could mask underlying health conditions, such as stomach problems, and make the issues hard to detect and treat. Does my German Shepherd puppy need a multivitamin? Yes, German Shepherd puppies 3 months and older need supplements, especially those for their hips, joints, stomach soothers, and improving their itchy skin and dry coats. Usually, dogs should get all the vitamins they need from a balanced diet. But in some cases, modern dog food manufacturing processes kill off essential nutrients. Multivitamin supplements, probiotics, digestive enzymes, and omega-3 oils are generally safe for puppies 12 weeks of age and older. And almost all German Shepherd puppies should be given joint supporting supplements due to their predisposition for joint-related issues. This means that you must perform your own due diligence to make sure you select safe supplements. Each supplement has its own benefits and drawbacks, which you must also take into account. Too much is a bad thing When giving multiple supplements, beware of overdosing to avoid giving too much of a good thing. In fact, more than necessary could cause unwanted side effects. Watch out for imbalances The majority of German Shepherds react well to supplements. But when giving vitamins or minerals to puppies, extra caution should be taken. This is because these supplements can lead to a nutritional imbalance that can be harmful to growing puppies. Always talk to your vet Your vet is the best resource for advice on giving supplements to your German Shepherd. Too much calcium can cause excessive bone growth which damages their joints. This fast growth can also lead to long term pain, hip issues, and other growth disorders. Supplements made for humans contain higher doses of vitamins than your dog needs. You could accidentally give them serious complications by using human supplements. With high amounts of iron and calcium, prenatal vitamins could cause iron toxicity in puppies. This can lead to serious side effects. Other vitamins, such as vitamin D, can cause organ damage in dogs. An overdose of Vitamin D can cause kidney failure. Keep your German Shepherd puppy away from caffeine! It has antibacterial properties and is therefore also found in dental hygiene products, such as mouthwash or toothpaste. The amount of xylitol found in different products varies. But shockingly, even pieces of gum may be enough to cause toxic effects in a dog source! Always keep human food and hygiene products away from your puppy. You never know what ingredient might actually cause serious problems or even fatalities in your pup. Certain supplements can give your pup a healthier lifestyle, like:. Hip-dysplasia and osteoarthritis are conditions of concern for nearly all Large Breed Dogs. Still, German Shepherds are unique in that it is not uncommon for them also to develop elbow dysplasia. It is, therefore, essential that German Shepherds, especially those with high activity levels, including working dogs or in K9 units, have proper joint support early in life, even as puppies. Skin support supplements like fish oil are also commonly used to help German Shepherds maintain a healthy skin and coat. Like all long-haired dogs, German Shepherds have three separate coats of fur, and keeping their skin healthy with a supplement helps their coat function properly; essential for any gsd living in colder climates. German Shepherd owners will get the added benefit of a faster blow-coat season if they help their Dog avoid dry skin. Benefits- How Supplements Help with German Shepherds: The Right Supplement Can help German Shepherds Perform at their best and avoid common health problems if the supplement can: Support joint health and flexibility, maintain healthy elbows and hips and relieve occasional joint stiffness. Enhance the functions of joint and connective tissues to support peak performance using the best source of Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM Support GSD skin health with Omega-3 fatty acids Help maintain normal eye function, healthy vision development, and long-term ocular health. Provide a complete way to optimize overall health and improve quality of life, whether working dogs or not. Support normal immune system function. One bag of WoofWell Supplements contains 60 soft chews and should suffice as a day supply for most German Shepherds. The recommended dosage for Shepherds up to 70 lbs. Or two chews per day Since the Supplement is designed to help reduce inflammation, it is the most effective when given at steady intervals throughout the day. Instead of 2 chews every 24 hours, give one every 12 hours. Consistency is crucial for senior dogs who might be experiencing joint pain. Since the supplements contain Glucosamine, which can cause stomach upset if taken on an empty stomach, be sure to give it during or after mealtime, especially when helping a growing German Shepherd puppy develop healthy joints. Different enzymes are required to break down calcium, so it is not as prevalent. While every Dog is different, nearly all dogs like to be rewarded and prefer supplements they see as a 'treat. In general, when taken as directed, supplements are usually safe for German Shepherd Dogs. If your GSD is taking medication, it is always advisable to contact your veterinarian before starting any new supplement or vitamin. In addition, they set the classification rules for ingredients. For example, probiotics go in a feed; lutein goes in a supplement. Companies trying to save a buck will often skimp on the milligrams of active ingredients in their products. Not every country considers dogs to be man's best friend. Companies will label the country of manufacturing on the label, and if buying online or from Amazon, this information is usually easy to find. There are a lot of supplements on the market. Instead of using a powder that needs to be mixed with wet food to mix in, or a pill you must shove down your Dog's throat, we believe that if you have a superior, quality, effective Supplement that dogs love, you've won the whole battle. It is challenging to make great-tasting Hard chewable tablets. Soft-Chews provides an elegant way to create a high-quality joint supplement for dogs with vitamin a and vitamin e without compromising taste. It takes a while for your Dog to show signs of increased energy and mobility. There is no magic pill that gives increased mobility overnight. With consistency and time, owners report increases in energy and mobility, especially with their older dogs. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Answer- The active ingredients in supplements have been put to the test through many years of research for their various benefits seen in animals, from allergy mitigation to osteoarthritic support. These ingredients are not found in pet food due to their potency and should always come with dosage instructions. For most German Shepherds, two chews per day are sufficient. Be sure to feed at steady intervals. For Example: if the recommended dose is two chews, give one chew every 12 hours instead of 2 chews every 24 hours. Answer: Always check the cautions and warnings on the label. By law, all known medication interactions must be labels in the cautions or warnings. Disclaimer: reading warnings on a label isn't a substitute for contacting your Veterinarian to be sure the medication and Supplement are safe to be taken together. We recommend contacting your Vet if you have any concerns about medication interactions. Answer: If your pet is allergic to ingredients listed on the label, do not use the product. If your pet is allergic to certain ingredients not listed on the label, it does not necessarily mean the product is not safe to use, but it is always wise to ask. We are available to answer your questions about ingredients found in our products. Still, We will always encourage you to call your vet if your pet is prone to severe allergic reactions before starting any new supplement. Dogs do not have the same threshold for vitamins as humans when it comes to toxicity. There was a recent recall on dog food that contained vitamin D. Unlike humans; dogs create their own vitamin C. Rarely is this function best achieved through feeding your dog simple vitamins. Answer: If you do nothing else, at a minimum, make sure your Shepherd is taking a joint-support vitamin. The GSD is one of the active Dog breeds and it isn't uncommon for a German Shepherd to get as much activity as Labrador Retriever during their lifetime. So there MUST be an emphasis on joint care. There have been hundreds of studies done on the pros and cons of the ingredients in joint supplements. The side-effects are next to none and even have a GRAS status, meaning it is tough to overdose on them, but the evidence is there. Backed by multiple peer-reviewed studies that dogs prone to osteoarthritic problems will benefit from ingesting ingredients like Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM. Your Dog is worth it. Are Supplements Necessary for Dogs? Answer: Every Dog is different, and common sense tells us that some dogs will benefit greatly. In this day and age, while the veterinary food industry is still debating about whether or not grain-free is good, we believe it is a time in history where supplementation is absolutely necessary. They are the only Supplement explicitly formulated for German Shepherds, providing multiple types of optimal health support in an all-in-one soft-chew. Adopting a Rescued Lab Complete our online adoption application below. DLRR currently serves throughout the state of Arizona. We may have limited resources in rural parts of Arizona, so contact us to see if we serve your area. We do not adopt dogs to people outside Arizona. DLRR does its best to match the right dog with the right family by finding out as much as possible about the potential adoptive family before placing a dog. If you are interested in knowing what dogs we have available, please visit Our Dogs page! This does not account for the cost of medical care provided to our dogs with complex medical issues. All dogs placed by DLRR will be spayed or neutered. Several ailments, including some types of cancer, are prevented by spaying or neutering. Most of the dogs we intake are young adults who have outgrown their puppy cuteness and are quite active. The Dog-a-Log shows all our dogs available for adoption. Not all available dogs are in foster care, so information about them may be limited. The foster knows the most about the dog and will be able to answer any questions you might have, as well as to arrange a meeting with the dog and your family. Our fosters will advise if you are a match for their Lab. If the foster lets you know you are a match, you have 24 hours to call the foster back with your decision. The Lab cannot be shown to another family during this hour period. Please keep in mind, rescuing a Lab is a commitment, not a convenience, and most rescued dogs need extra love and patience to feel secure in their new environment and may require some time and training to become their best! Steps to Adopting a Dog: Make sure a Lab is for you. If you have any questions, please contact us. Talk it over with everyone in your household, and make sure that everyone feels the same way about adopting a rescue dog. Think about your schedule and decide when and if you will have time to spend with your dog. Who will be responsible for taking care of the dog? Finally, take a look at your home. Where will the dog sleep? Where will the dog eat? Fill out our Adoption Application. Complete our online adoption application. We reserve the right to refuse any application for any reason. A DLRR representative will contact you for a home visit. One of our volunteers will contact you to arrange to visit your home. Cases in which a Virtual Home Visit is not possible will be put on hold and applicants will be notified of the delay. The volunteer will virtually visit your home to meet your family and listen to your needs. This helps to determine whether the home is a suitable environment for a Labrador Retriever and help us find the Lab best suited for your family. The Dog-a-Log showcases our adoptable dogs and is emailed twice weekly to approved adopters. Your whole family will meet the dog that may be right for you. We require that all members of the family are present to make sure everyone agrees on the perfect match. If you do not feel a dog is the right dog for you, or if the foster family feels this particular dog may not be the right fit for your family, we will begin the process again to find the perfect dog for your family. Wait 24 hours. Once you have decided on your perfect dog, you must wait at least 24 hours before taking your new Lab home. This is designed to give you time to fully consider your decision. It also gives you the chance to prepare your home to be ready for your new family member and purchase any items such as a collar, bowls, food, bedding and toys, and take time to review the First 7 Days document that was given to you at your home visit. Take your new family member home. You will then pay DLRR your adoption fee. We will provide support to you after the adoption to make sure that your new friend becomes an integral part of your family. If you have any questions about our adoption process, please contact our Adoption Coordinator. DLRR reserves the right to refuse any application for any reason. Daisy and Brock are a beautiful mother and son pair who love to snuggle together and cuddle. They are both sweet, happy, and friendly. They adore getting attention from anyone they meet during their walks and easily draw people in with their sunny personalities and soft silky coats. They have settled into an easy routine in their foster home and relish their walks every day and visits to the dog park. During their walks Brock clocks roughly twice the mileage of foster mom and Daisy with his side-to-side walking style. Neither is true! These pups love to live it up at the dog park where they show off their speed as Brock sprints and dives after his Kong frisbee, often grabbing it taco style, while Daisy relishes fetching an orange Chuck-It ball before eventually resting to chew on it. Brock is also a master at tug-of-war who has learned to drop it sometimes after repeated requests so it can be thrown again. Brock is extra special because he was born without a tail, which causes him to be incontinent. Inside the house he wears diapers and a belly band, and his incontinence is easily managed. When coming inside from a walk, Brock waits patiently for his diaper to be put on. Daisy and Brock took time to smell the roses and ponder life. While happy to be in a foster home, they would love to find their forever home. Please open your mind and your heart to considering adopting these two gorgeous pups. You will never regret your decision. This is an exciting phase for both owners and puppies alike! At two weeks old, puppies should have their ears open, be alert, and start opening their eyes. At this stage, puppies start to stand, walk, and sit without falling over. With this rapid increase in function, puppies can begin to socialize with each other and their mother. Puppies begin to explore the world around them. They can hear, smell, and see and their canine teeth are growing in next to their incisors. When they play, four week old puppies will begin to exhibit distinctive body language such as play bows, as well as growling. Four week old puppies are much more independent. At this age, puppies begin the weaning process, transitioning from milk to Life Abundance All Stage Dog food. Week 5 WEEK 5 A five week old puppy continues to learn from and socialize with their mother and litter mates. During this time, puppies learn more bite inhibition through play. The weaning process also continues at five weeks. Your five week old puppy should gradually be moving on to solid food instead of nursing from their mother. They have freedom out in the play yard through a dog door. Start learning to go outside to potty. Week 6 WEEK 6 Mom usually will not let puppies nurse at this stage and wants to be away from the pups. Some puppies complete the weaning process by 6 weeks old. At this age, they are still socially developing and learning how to be dogs. Because they are so keen to learn, we work more on potty training and no bite. We also start socializing them with other dogs and or older puppies. In addition, at 7 weeks old, your puppy is noticing it can get frightened. Proper socialization can prevent your puppy from becoming timid. Week 8 WEEK 8 When puppies are 8 weeks old, most are independent, fully weaned, and usually ready for their new homes. Puppies for Adopting Our goal is for the original intent for the breed, the all versatile dog. All of our adult dogs at Graves Labradors have been health tested and we guarantee that we do not produce affected pups to known disorders that are common in labradors! Exercises Grooming From ancient Germany precisely around the 19th century had the now extinct mastiff breed Bullenbeisser and bulldogs brought in from England. At the time of their arrival, they served as hunting dogs for bears, deer, and other ferocious beasts, it would capture the prey with the help of its awesome teeth and detain it until the hunter arrives. And in the first boxer standard club was launched with a comprehensive document that is still in use today. Shortly after, the breed made its way into other European countries and got into the U. S in the late 19th century with the American Kennel Club taking registration of its first boxer around .During the first world war, boxers played the role of a military dog as a pack-carrier, a guard dog, and an attack dog, later they were taken home by the soldiers and got introduced into the domestic world as a show dog, best companion, and a reliable guard. One with so much life, energetic, curious, attentive, active, smart, sociable and incredible fun with children is the boxer, they are also known to be very patient and highly protective of their family members making them the love and desire of many homes. As active dogs, they need a lot of exercise to keep them mentally fit, apparently having a mind of its own, you will find your boxer entertain itself by digging the ground often, chewing, and licking the mouth to beat boredom. They are also very stubborn in character which makes them a terrible choice for first-timers with dogs, they are generally a bit difficult with adult dogs including dogs of a similar breed but friendly with puppies. They usually do not bark unless there is a genuine reason behind it but they love to growl. If you have occupied home with people around all the time or you want a canine buddy the whole time, then a boxer is just the perfect breed to get. Being a highly active dog, they dread loneliness and they can cope finely in both a house and an apartment as long as you provide it with enough room and spaces for exercises and activities. What you must have is a large yard if you are living in a house for it to dig the ground and run around as it likes. And more so, if you are given to being away from home most of the time, getting a boxer may not be the best for you and the dog, because they usually get aggressive when left alone. Boxers are known as loud snorers and they drool greatly too. Boxers are playful and very energetic dogs as such regular exercises are part of a good canine relationship, especially a breed of this sort. Your boxer should be allowed to play in a fenced area and on-leashed since it is likely to jump and leap around in excitement. This puts a boxer as a bad choice for a frail owner as they may find it a tad impossible and daunting keeping up with its excessive activity demands. Being a breed with a short and thin coat its grooming demands are quite easy and little, all it needs is a light brushing of the hair twice every week to maintain its good and gleeful looks. Bathing should be a once in a while since boxers are generally clean dogs and its nails, be trimmed once every month or as often as they grow worn on surfaces, its teeth should also be brushed daily to avoid tartar formation and other dental crises. Our Boxer puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell. Frequently Asked Questions Are Boxers good family pets? I am wondering who here has dealt with their Bulldogs being picky eaters? It sounds so foreign to me that ANY bully would be a picky eater, but my Lincoln is for sure a picky eater, and he has been since he was a puppy. I've been experimenting with different foods lately, and I have discovered that he will only eat certain foods that I give him. For the longest time I've been trying to feed him the Kirkland Seafood kibble, but he always acted uninterested and many times walked away without eating any of it. He will also NOT touch his food if anything is mixed in. I did a test run with two other brands, Orijen and Zignature, and he gobbled it right up. It appears that he wants me to buy him super expensive premium food He is a healthy 50 lbs boy, but I don't think I could overfeed him if I tried! Anyone else here have picky eaters and are there certain kibbles your bully won't eat? Click to expand.Giving a good quality dog food will save you vet bills in the long run. Kirkland salmon formula is probably made from farmed salmon, so not that healthy. My dog has only refused to eat Fromm brand, loves all the other brands. Salmon oil is another tasty meal topper that contains Omega 3, which provides many health benefits. For more information, check out our salmon oil review. But what may surprise you is that you can use exercise to get a picky dog to eat his food. You see, exercise makes dogs hungry. One of the easiest ways to exercise your dog is to go for a nice long walk — Walking is good for you too! If you already walk your dog, try upping the distance. Picky dog owners we spoke to saw the most success when they walked their pooch for 45 minutes or longer before dinner. There are other ways you can exercise your dog… Test your strength with a tug of war with a tug toy A long game of fetch with a dog tennis ball Toss a plush dog toy around indoors when the weather is bad. In some cases, you may even be able to get your dog to exercise himself. Herding dogs, like border collies and Australian shepherds will entertain themselves for hours with a herding ball. Whichever way you exercise your dog, the focus is on tiring him out. And because his meal is the only thing on offer, he will be more likely to eat it. Give him at least 15 minutes for his stomach to settle. Throw it on the floor Do you have a fussy puppy? You can take advantage of his playful nature to get him to eat his food. Sit by your puppy and sprinkle dried dog food on the ground, a little at a time. As your puppy eats a piece, add another one further away. Because your playful pup thinks this is a game, he will be more likely to take to his food. It may take quite a few sessions, but once he has a taste for his food, you can transition to a bowl. If you want to feed inside, grab a good broom and sweep up after mealtime is over — there is nothing worse than feeling pieces of kibble crunch underfoot. Turn feeding time into a game Picky eaters often play with their food instead of eating it. With the help of a good feeding toy, you can get your dog to do both. Feeding toys combine play with eating. And for toy-obsessed pups, they are a great way to convince a dog to eat his food Jessica, the owner of a dainty poodle, says her dog refuses to eat dry food. Another owner, Jack, uses a snuffle mat to get his fussy English Springer Spaniel to eat. When this super-sniffing dog finds kibble using his nose, he will promptly eat it without a second thought — even though he refuses to eat the same kibble when offered it in a bowl Unfortunately, feeding toys only hold a limited amount of food. While this may not be a problem for a small dog like a Boston terrier, it presents an issue for bigger dogs… You see, large breeds like Rottweilers or Mastiffs may need as much as 10 cups of kibble per day. Make sure you are feeding the right amount This one might seem a little obvious, but you would be amazed at just how many owners overfeed their dogs. I can understand. I mean, when your dog stares at you with those bulgy puppy eyes, it can be hard to resist giving them an extra treat or two. Overfeeding is a particular problem if you have a small pup like a Chihuahua, Papillon or Brussels Griffon… These tiny dogs need much less food than you think. The smallest sizes might only need half a cup of kibble across a whole day. As you can imagine, these tiny stomachs get full quick. When your belly is full to bursting, the last thing you want is more food, right? Well, your dog feels the same. While you may think your dog is fussy, your dog may need more time to digest his last meal. Speak to your vet about the amount of food your dog needs. He will be considerably more likely to eat his food if he has to work for it. A short session of Shake, Roll Over, or any other trick will have your dog expecting a reward for his hard work. Many picky eaters get so caught up in being rewarded that they forget they would normally reject this meal. The key here is to make your dog think his reward is a big deal. Shower your pup with praise and pats while offering him the meal. If you can get your dog excited enough, he will believe this meal is the best thing that has ever happened to him — He will eat his food without a second thought. No Table Scraps Are you sharing your dinner with your dog? Can you imagine eating dry kibble after tasting a delicious hamburger? I know it can be hard to resist. Especially when your dog peers up from underneath the table with those bulging puppy dog eyes. Instead, he will be less likely to reject his bowl of food. Worth it? I think so. Pretend to eat it A special thank you to Meagan, who told us how she used this unique trick to get a fussy dog to eat. After reading our guide on how to get a dog to take a pill , she found the easiest solution was to pretend to eat it. Her Shih Tzu would happily swallow a pill, thinking it was human food. Meagan took this concept a step further when she fostered a fussy Havanese named Elon. As you might have guessed, Elon was refusing to eat his food. The solution? She grabbed a bag of kibble and pretended to eat it like it was a bag of crisps. Hiding the kibble in her hand, she would reach back in the bag and pretend to grab another piece. Every minute or so, she would offer the Havanese a single piece of kibble. Thinking he had hit the jackpot, Elon would frantically gobble it down. Instead of rejecting it, he finished the whole meal! Cut back the treats If your dog is refusing to eat, then you should skip the treats. Any more than this and you are giving your pup more treats than he needs. For example, an adult chihuahua would only need four small Milkbones. Any more and you are overdoing it. But treats can contribute to picky eating in another way… In some instances, your dog may be rejecting his food because he wants a treat instead. If you offer your dog treats even though he is not eating his food, you are reinforcing the idea that he will get something better if he waits it out — you have accidentally trained your dog to be a picky eater. Claire, one of the respondents of our survey, said this was the issue with her fussy German Shorthaired Pointer. Claire stopped giving him treats and, he soon went back to eating his food as usual. Warm the meal to enhance flavor Many finicky dogs can be encouraged to eat their meal just by warming it up. This method is commonly used on senior dogs who are rejecting their food. Wet food can be heated up in the microwave or steamer pot. Use a plastic or ceramic bowl instead. Show your dog how bad it could be… If you are like me, you treat your dog like royalty. You only serve the best dog food possible. Fortunately, the solution is simple. Show your dog how good he actually has it. I learned this trick from my neighbor and her spoiled Boxer, Anastasia. She only feeds Orijen dog food — expensive stuff. However, now and then, Anastasia will suddenly become picky and refuse to eat it. If Anastasia ever rejected her Orijen kibble, it would be swapped out with Pedigree kibble. Sure enough, Anastasia would sniff her food, turn her nose up and walk away in disgust. My neighbor would then take the Pedigree kibble away and present her original dish. Anastasia would now happily chow down on the same Orijen kibble she previously rejected. Buy a cheaper food. This way, if your dog does eat it, you can save money by making the switch. Create a safe space Is your dog easily distracted or stressed? Some dogs will refuse to eat if thunderstorms or fireworks trigger their anxiety. Many owners report that they solved this with a thunder vest. In these instances, a dog may not eat his food until his owner returns. Similarly, distractions can also stop a dog from eating his meal. If you are showering your dog with attention, or you have a young child demanding to play with the dog, it can be hard to focus on eating. Not only does he need to get used to his new collapsible silicone dog bowl but an entirely new environment with different sights and smells too — how can your pup focus on eating with all that change? In all these instances, creating a comfortable, quiet eating area can go a long way to fixing picky eating. Best of all, the tiles are easy to clean if he makes a mess. It might be that your old pup finds it painful to hunch over his bowl and eat his meal. Many owners report this as a common problem in larger breeds. In their senior years, bending down to eat is a lot more difficult than when they were younger. These raised dog bowls sit up to 12 inches off the ground and can help reduce the joint stress that comes with eating hunched over. For instance, a bowl that is the perfect height for a Pit Bull is too high for a Fox Terrier. With the bowl raised to a much more comfortable eating height, your senior pooch can now eat his meal pain-free. Go wet Can you imagine eating dry dog food every day? And neither can many dogs. These dogs will refuse to eat dry food at all. No matter how high-quality it may be. For these finicky pups, swapping over to wet food is the solution you need. Cans, dog food rolls and, pouches are the most readily available wet dog foods around — you can grab them at your local Walmart. Many popular brands of dry dog food offer the same flavors in a canned version. Unfortunately, canned food is typically more expensive than kibble. However, if it gets your dog to eat his food, then you may find the added cost is justified. Leave it to sit for a few minutes before offering the meal to your dog. Routine, Routine, Routine Consistency is key. If your dog has an inconsistent eating schedule, then he will likely inconsistently eat his food too. They love routine. Swapping back to his original metal bowl was all it took to get this pup to eat her food. A good eating routine for a fussy dog should include… Feeding the same type of food. Feeding the same amount. Use the same dog bowl. Feed your dog at the same time. Feed your dog in the same location. With a good routine in place, you may find your picky eater just needed a little consistency in his life. Add some variety Remember earlier when I said swapping out a dogs food too often can lead to picky eating? Well, this trick goes against that advice. Three different survey respondents had success by offering their picky eaters a variety of different foods. Does your dog take to a new food for a few days before rejecting it all of a sudden? Rotating through different brands of food could get your dog to eat again. Your dog feels the same about his kibble. If you are offering your dog dry food that has been left out overnight, he will likely refuse it. This affects both the taste and smell… While it might look the same to you or me, your dog can tell the difference. The result? In this case, offering your dog a fresh scoop of kibble could be all that is needed to get him to eat. If this date has passed, the food may become unsafe to eat. Even if the expiration date has not passed, improper storage can cause the kibble to lose its taste and aroma. Dry dog food quickly goes stale when exposed to air. Think your dog is not eating because his food is stale? If your dog happily eats it, the old bag was probably stale. Fortunately, this can easily be fixed by grabbing a good pet food storage container. These airtight containers will keep your dry dog food fresh for longer. Special dogs need a special bowl Do you have a flat-faced dog such as a pug or French bulldog? You see, flat-faced dogs eat with a scooping motion. This makes it difficult to reach small pieces of kibble that rest against the edges of the bowl. Fortunately, there are bowls specifically designed to make it easy for smooshy-faced dogs to eat. Our personal favorite is the Enhanced Pet Bowl. There are plenty of other benefits to using a flat-faced dog bowl such as improved breathing and less gas. Want more info? Check out our review of the best flat faced dog bowls. Does your dog have allergies, loose stools, gas or, an upset tummy? According to Veterinarian, Dr. Sara Ochoa, a dog may refuse to eat his meal if he believes it is the cause of his discomfort. Unfortunately, many dogs find that regular kibble irritates their stomach. She uses it on her own dog if she suffers from diarrhea, to firm stools. As a bonus, this food is commonly used as a safe food for sensitive tummies. Many dog owners report that their dog has never been so excited to eat kibble until they made the switch. How did you get your fussy dog to eat his meal? Got a tip to share? Let me know in the comments below!

Through our specialized training programs each puppy is prepared to take their place as a valued and happy member of their forever family. Golden Savannah is committed to responsibly breed and train each puppy. We are located in the beautiful hillside of Mohnton , Pennsylvania. Our Story Years ago, our first English Golden pups were born as ten stunning puppies that quickly became treasured members of the family. The name fit perfectly as we began to dedicate more of our time to breeding and raising our beautiful English Golden Retrievers. As the business grew we never established a full kennel, preferring instead to raise the puppies in a smaller and specialized environment. With many hours of research plus interacting with knowledgeable breeders, we learned that puppies who receive personalized training will have a more seamless and happy transition into their new family. In addition to breeding puppies, we also began offering several levels of added training programs for pups to learn the good hygiene, manners, and social graces. The English Cream Goldens are exceptionally friendly and intelligent, and a number of our puppies have even gone on to be successful therapy or service dogs. It is our joy at Golden Savannah to provide puppies that have become happy companion dogs to many, valued for their gentle benevolence and hearts of gold. We are located in the beautiful hillside of Mohnton, Pennsylvania. Customer Stories We go to great lengths to ensure that each puppy is entrusted into the care of a loving and capable family and we love to receive updated photos. To be honest, I was completely overwhelmed with the idea of finding a dog, funding this adventure and the responsibility it would entail. When I started searching I became even more overwhelmed. I found many resources for veterans but not much for a young adult. I started searching for started dogs that we could continue to train on our own. Golden Savannah is a breeder from Pennsylvania. He's been the best addition to our family and we couldn't love him any more! He's growing like crazy - already almost 60 lbs and just short of 6 months. People always comment on how well-behaved and mild mannered he is which makes us proud parents. There have even been multiple times where people have pulled over on the side of the road as we're going for walks to tell us how beautiful he is! And our friends and family love him just as much as we do! They all jump at an opportunity to babysit Odin if Andrew and I are going out of town. He's just finished his second round of training classes and has made lots of doggy friends and definitely captured the heart of our trainer. She also breeds Goldens here in Massachusetts and has a special connection with Odin. He gets to go to work with Andrew everyday and meet lots of people and dogs! I guess he feels like one of the boys : He's our little shadow and we can't wait to make more memories with him this winter! Goldens we have bred have gone on to finish their show championships, field and performance titles, have served as therapy dogs and also as service animals. Most, however, are placed as family pets and nothing makes us happier than placing a nice puppy with a great lifelong family. They enjoy competing in various venues, depending on what makes them happiest: AKC conformation, hunt tests, rally, obedience, dock diving, FastCAT. All of our puppies are raised right inside our home and exposed to daily life with kids and other pets. Filling you in on these things is the fundamental purpose of this article, where we discuss crucial criteria for judging quality breeders of Goldendoodle puppies in Minnesota and recommend some of the best ones. Choosing a Responsible Goldendoodle Breeder Choosing to adopt a Goldendoodle puppy is one of the easiest decisions in the world. Once you are sure that you are ready for all the commitments a dog entails, a Doodle really is the obvious choice. These gorgeous pups have been carefully bred to combine all the very best of other dogs in one super family-friendly package… just as long as you find the right breeder. This is where things get complicated. The price of designer Doodles attracts all sorts trying to make some easy money by deceiving potential buyers. This type of scam is sadly all too common. See Also: Click the image Puppy mills are another potential problem in the world of dog breeding. These are kennels where profit is king above all else. The puppies and their parents are poorly cared for and raised in inhumane conditions. The best way to avoid a puppy mill is to ask to see where the dogs are being kept — either in person or via video chat. Then you can gauge the conditions for yourself. Other breeders may do their best by the dogs but may not know all that much about guaranteeing the best health of the puppies they produce. The output could be Goldies who are sick or that have inherited genetic issues from their parents, which may not be apparent until they are older. A few ways to ensure a high-quality breeding facility is to: Check Certification While a breeding license is not necessary for those with fewer than ten dogs, other types of certification can help you judge the quality of the facility you are dealing with. Just always make sure to double-check that they actually are. Never just take them at their word. Make sure you always ask for evidence of these. A reputable facility will be used to providing this information and will not hesitate to do so upon request. Specific details on what to look for with Goldendoodles can be found here. Look For a Health Guarantee Facilities that are really secure in their breeding standards will be happy to provide new owners with a health guarantee. This basically shows that the puppy is in the best possible health as far as can be determined by the relevant vet checks and tests. The length of such guarantees can extend for 48 hours — just long enough for you to have your vet give the pup a good looking over — to up to two years. This allows the owners to rule out any genetic disorders that may only develop as the puppy matures. Seek Recommendations from A Trusted Source A preferred method of selecting a good breeder among dog owners is to seek recommendations from those in the know. Is there room in your heart for Cheese? He has the longest tongue for such a small guy. Do you have room for him? That especially applies to dogs from shelters and rescue centers that might have already had a bad start in life. Tells You Any Health Problems A reputable breeder or seller will be open and honest about the health of the dog. If there are any health issues that you need to be aware of, they will tell you. Asks More Questions Than You The breeder should be keen to reassure themselves that the puppy is going to a knowledgeable home and to owners that understand how to care for a dog properly. Requires Expectations On Both Sides Before agreeing to sell you a puppy, the breeder should be keen to establish what both parties expect from each other. For example, a deposit may be required from you to secure a puppy. Small breeders who only produce one or two litters of puppies every year generally do so for the love of the breed rather than to make vast profits. Sends Puppies Properly Most reputable breeders insist that you collect the puppy from them in person. However, that might not be possible, depending on where you live, Covid restrictions, etc. In those circumstances, the breeder often offers to ship the puppy to you. When I was looking around for a puppy, I noticed that many so-called professional breeders offered multiple breeds for sale. In some cases, the breeder uses a Poodle stud dog to cover several different breeds of mother dogs. That breeder specializes in three specific small breeds, is fully licensed, and is definitely not a puppy farm! Shows Breeding Experience The best breeders are well-established with plenty of experience in producing high-quality, well-bred puppies. Puppy-proofing Puppies are notorious for getting into everything! That can mean destruction for your home and potential danger for your puppy. So, take time to puppy-proof your home by placing anything tempting out of reach of your fluffy bundle of mischief. When I bought my first puppy home many years ago, the garden immediately became his go-to place. That was great, as it meant my pup could run around and burn off his excess energy, as well as experience all kinds of sights and sounds. The doorbell rang, and I answered to find my neighbor standing on the doorstep, clutching my puppy! The little guy had escaped through the hole and wandered off down the road. Luckily, my neighbor spotted him and scooped him up before any harm was done. So, always remember to check and re-check your fences before you let your new furbaby out to play! Introducing The Potty Place Potty training your Goldendoodle puppy is something that many owners dread. Most pups get to regard their crate as a cozy den that they can retreat to when they want to sleep or chill out. Take time to train your puppy to use his crate, and never use the crate as a punishment. Scheduling Dogs are creatures of habit and they thrive on a schedule. Patience Puppies are like small children. They will soak up new experiences and lessons like sponges and are typically very quick learners. However, you must be patient when training your furry friend. Never get angry and punish your pet for getting something wrong. Simply be consistent and sympathetic in your training, using praise, treats, and positive reinforcement to get the job done. Trouble makes all the calls; she controls the situation, and since Bruno has no problems allowing the cat to be the boss, they get along great. Bruno seems to know his limitations and if he gets out of line, one paw in the air from Trouble and Bruno immediately calms down and does what the cat wants. Proves size means nothing. We have an pound Boxer and a ten-pound cat and the cat is, without question, the boss of the relationship. Happy First Birthday Bruno! May 25th! Bruno starts off his special day with a a. Boy, did he enjoy that! Bruno stopping at a pig's mud hole to get a drink. Trouble the cat decided to come along on the middle-of-the-night walk. Bruno getting a drink in the pond Happy First Birthday, Bruno! Bruno gets a party hat and a noisemaker. The kids decide to make Bruno a cake. Bruno lies down and waits for them to finish. He's tired; he had just gotten back from chasing the golf cart around the fields. Just as he had gotten back from that run, he spotted Stephen riding away on the quad and took off chasing him through the woods. All of that running combined with his middle-of-the-night hike, and we have one tired pup! After Bruno cools down, he gets to eat some lunch. Bruno gets his own handmade party hat. The kids finish some of their cakes. It's chocolate, and you are not allowed to eat chocolate. Now THIS cake is for you.Topped off with a Milk Bone that is coated in pill-pocket treats. Time to sing Happy Birthday Bruno! Bruno loves his cake! Peanut butter with a pill-pocket coated Milk Bone! Couldn't get much better than this! Bruno has no problem finishing off his cake. Later on, Bruno goes for a swim in the pond and romps around with Allie in the horse field while the kids catch frogs. By the end of the day, Bruno is one tired pup. A tired dog is a good dog, and Bruno is one good dog! I believe he had a wonderful first birthday. They can now all be together as one pack. Walking them properly as a pack did wonders. A few months ago I would never have believed Allie the Boxer could actually be standing next to Tundra the Great Pyrenees without fighting. We went from bloody fights to this. A Very Good First Year Bruno is being raised and treated according to a philosophy method that takes the dog's natural instincts and how a dog communicates in mind. I credit this technique for Bruno's temperament: how calm he is inside the house; how he drops objects from his mouth immediately on command; the way he lies down and waits patiently as I prepare his food, without being told to do so; how he does not beg for food; how he does not push through humans when entering or exiting an entryway he, on his own, waits for the humans to pass before he enters ; the way he does not pull on his lead when walking ; how I can take him to an outdoor water ice store with people everywhere, and he calmly watches everyone around him; the way he does not run off, he has no desire to leave his humans. He loves delivery guys, workers and strangers who show up at the house, he does not jump on these people and I have yet to hear him growl at a human. People receive a calm welcome, yet he seems to have the uncanny ability to know just when to bark and guard. I have no doubt in my mind if a person with ill-intent were to come, he would be ready. I can open the front door wide and he'll stand there and wait for the "OK" to bolt after the animal he hears outside something I tell him to do—go get the fox. He listens to the kids as well as he listens to me. We can put food down in front of him, for example, his birthday cake , and he waits until we tell him he may eat it. He never enters the off-limits family room, and he never ventures up the steps. He stays in the parts of the house we tell him to stay without the use of baby gates. He never jumps up on furniture something we do not allow him to do by choice. It's never been an issue with him. How easily he lays down on command. How easy it was to housetrain him. Your Browser does not support the use of the video tag. You can download the video here But may I suggest you upgrade to a modern Browser Firefox or Google Chrome There will be an object, be it food or a dead animal on the ground, and after a simple "leave it" command, Bruno walks away from the object, no matter how tasty it may be. As young as he is, how few and far between he will chew something up and of course, when he does have something he should not have, a simple "leave it" gets him to drop it. He allows me to give him a bath, clean his ears, and wipe and put ointment in his eyes without protest. When we come home after being gone, he does not rush at us over-excitedly. A lot of the time he does not leave his dog bed. There was a time when I would have mistaken this behavior as him disliking us, however after studying natural dog behavior, I understand this is how one balanced canine respects another canine. Bruno is respecting our space his pack leader's space. I have learned to recognize the animal inside the dog and in doing this I can give HIM what he needs, instead of only taking what I need from him. What kind of friend would I be to "man's best friend" if I only took what I needed and never gave back? In return, I have one very happy, well-balanced dog. And hey, I'm even in better shape from walking him. There are plenty of times when I do not feel like going for a walk, but I do it for him, because that is what HE needs. I am human, he is a dog ; we do not have the same needs. As well balanced as Bruno is, I know if he were to go to a different owner who did not put the dog's needs before their own, Bruno would not be the same dog he is today. Ever hear the saying "There are no bad dogs, just bad owners"? I now truly believe there is truth in it, however it's more like, "There are no bad dogs, just uneducated owners. Dogs are the most misunderstood animals in the world. It is this misunderstanding that leads to so many unwanted dogs; people who give up on their pets and start over with a new puppy, leaving the adult dog unbalanced and homeless, believing they cannot be "fixed," which is far from the truth. Do "man's best friend" a favor and take some time to learn what your dog truly needs. We are introduced to most of the farm animals: Benjamin, the cynical donkey; Boxer and Clover, two dumb, yet hard-working horses; Snowball, Napoleon, and Squealer, three cunning pigs; and Jessie and Blue Bell, two dogs. Major starts off the meeting by sharing his vision of a world where animals existed without man. He says all animals should fight for a rebellion against Man and that everybody must tell future generations about their hope for freedom. The animals sing it three times before going to bed that night. Major dies shortly thereafter and the animals start to secretly plan for rebellion against the owner of the farm, Jones, and the farmhands. The rebellion starts after an incident where the farmhands neglected and starved the animals for two days. The cows kick down the barn door and every animal starts to go crazy. When Jones tries to whip the animals, they chase every human off the farm, therefore igniting the rebellion. After a day of frenzied excitement, order resumes. The pigs are put in charge and the farm is renamed Animal Farm. The commandments are as follows: 1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. No animal shall wear clothes. No animal shall sleep in a bed. No animal shall drink alcohol. No animal shall kill any other animal. All animals are equal. Despite this last commandment, the pigs position themselves as the intelligence behind the whole operation, and therefore convince the other animals that they need special handling. As an example, they don't help the other animals during the annual harvesting of hay and they take all of the apples and milk for themselves. Squealer, the lead pig, convinces the other animals that it is for their own good. Things did not run smoothly on the farm. Snowball warns all the animals that Mr. Jones and his men will be back soon to try and reclaim the farm. When Jones and his men do come back, all the animals easily kick them out. Snowball is minorly wounded while charging into battle and gives himself an award: Animal Hero, First Class. Another example of chaos is the feud between the two head pigs. Snowball and Napoleon cannot get along; they disagree on everything from rations to age for retirement. Snowball proposes the idea of building a windmill on the farm, but Napoleon doesn't like the idea. Napoleon decides to build the windmill after all, and he cancels the weekly meetings he has held since the rebellion. When other animals are upset by this, Squealer is able to convince everyone that Napoleon canceled the meetings for their own good. He paints Napoleon as a hero. Things on the farm continue to deteriorate. All animals except the pigs work like slaves. Napoleon starts to trade with neighboring farms and the pigs move into the farmhouse. The animals are confused as to why the pigs are breaking the rules about trade and sleeping in a bed. Squealer, once again, convinces the animals that this inequality is for their own good. The partially-constructed windmill is blown down in a gale, and Snowball is put at blame. Squealer says that Snowball was teaming up with Jones from the very beginning. In a public display of shocking violence, Napoleon holds a meeting with all the animals and has his dogs rip the throats out of anyone who he thought to be loyal to Snowball. Everyone is distraught, and Boxer is especially disturbed. The humans destroy what is left of the windmill since they don't like the thought of Animal Farm succeeding, and Boxer is injured in the battle. It's in the middle of a bitter winter and the pigs are taking extra rations, so everyone is starving. The carriage that arrives for Boxer, takes him to a glue factory. The pigs use the money made off of Boxer to buy whiskey. Many more nasty surprises await the reader in the final chapters of this novel. Animal Farm represents the Russian Revolution of .Both speeches talk about how laborers and workers produce all the product, but the heads of the organization take everything for themselves. Jones and humans in general. Both rebellions happened without much planning and were achieved fairly easily. The overthrow of Nicholas happened when he sent military out to stop some protestors. The military sympathized with the common people, and instead turned on Nicholas. Both of these plans only worsened famine and both Stalin and Napoleon used tricks to make the outside world think that they were thriving. Boxer was the poster child of a perfect worker: he worked relentlessly, was eternally loyal, and never doubted the morals of the pigs. Instead of being rewarded for his years of service, he was sent off to be made into glue. This represents how Stalin and his men broke the principles of communism they set at the beginning and are just as bad as Nicholas. Instead of an improved society, everything is the same as before. Squealer represents propaganda throughout the revolution. During the revolution, propaganda was sent out to ease the minds of laborers. I love this book. The diction is simple and enjoyable. The story is fast-paced and Orwell is able to pack a lot of action into a few words.

With its athletic build and remarkable drive, this working breed makes excellent companions, herding dogs, police K-9s, and therapy animals. How much does a German Shepherd cost? The price of a German Shepherd puppy can vary a lot from one breeder to another. German Shepherds are active and need plenty of stimulation. Flea and tick preventatives are a must-have. You might face additional costs such as pet insurance, training classes, boarding fees, or dog walkers. Puppies tend to cost more due to the high demand. However, professional breeders charge a lot more. Professional breeders usually conduct health testing for the parents. Elbow and hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy are the two main tests to look for when adopting a GSD puppy. Prenatal care for the mother can be expensive. These costs can include bloodwork, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Most breeders raise the puppies for the first eight to 12 weeks. They provide nutrition, a living space, socialization, and sometimes early training. Puppies typically receive veterinary care, including a first round of booster shots and a deworming treatment. Colors German Shepherds can come in a few different colors. Black and tan and black and cream are the most common GSD colors. However, there are rarer colors, like black and silver, sable, or black. These colors meet the official breed standards, and a puppy with an unusual color can be worth more. Bloodline and Purity One of the key factors that influences the cost of a GSD puppy is the parents and their pedigrees. A breeder will look at how well the parents match the AKC breed standards. Both parents should be the right height and color. They should have a muscular morphology and the proper head shape. Breeders who are able to trace the ancestry of a litter over several generations and document that all the ancestors are purebred GSDs will charge more. You should also expect to pay more if a breeder can provide health testing information over several generations. Titles are another important factor. Show dogs can receive V, VA, or VA1 titles if they do well at an event and judges determine they meet all the standards of the breed. An IGP3 title indicates that a dog can protect its owner. Parents with IGP or IPO titles produce puppies that are worth more since breeders consider these animals to have excellent potential for training. A breeder who has an excellent reputation and many positive online reviews will attract more prospective dog owners and can afford to charge more. Size and Weight German Shepherds are medium to large dogs. When it comes to weight, a healthy male will weigh 66 to 88 lbs. Lifestyle and Activity Levels German Shepherds are a working breed. Their origin dates back to the 19th century when dog breeder Max Von Stephanitz developed a new dog by breeding different herding dogs. Like all shepherds, GSDs have a strong need to stay active. Due to their athletic build, these dogs need at least two hours of exercise every day. Going for walks might not be sufficient. Your GSD will thrive if you provide plenty of opportunities to use their athletic abilities, including jumping, swimming, or running. Approximate Lifetime Care Costs The total cost of owning a German Shepherd is difficult to estimate since every animal is different. German Shepherds can be expensive. Share your thoughts in the comments below. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. German Shepherds are considered healthy dogs that can live many years. You must be able to pay for these dogs every month of their lives. For the most part, providing your dog with a lot of exercise and high-quality food will prevent the dog from developing unforeseen health issues. You will need to buy a dog-safe toothpaste, dog-safe shampoo, and certain medications, such as heartworm prevention, to keep your dog healthy its entire life. Not only do you have to feed your German Shepherd a lot of food, but you want to feed your dog food that is high quality and healthy. As long as your dog does not have any known illnesses or issues, you should not have to pay monthly prices. At the minimum, you should take your German Shepherd for an annual visit, assuming it is healthy. You also need to pay for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Most of these medications last for 1 to 3 months at a time. It is completely up to you whether or not you decide to get pet insurance. If you are interested in getting health insurance for your new pet, Lemonade offers customizable insurance plans and responsive customer service. If you do not want to pay for pet insurance, you can simply set up a savings account instead. So long as you have a house and a yard for your dog to play, the home environment is generally suitable for dogs. Some environmental maintenance things you will need to buy include doggie bags. You need these if you take your dog for a walk or if you have a yard that you have to maintain. You may also need to pay for carpet cleaner, deodorizer, and other items to keep the house clean, despite your heavy shedding German Shepherd. This means that your German Shepherd can help you out when you are in a pinch, but it also means that you need to provide your German Shepherd ample entertainment, or else your dog could become destructive. At the very minimum, you need to buy heavy-duty toys for your German Shepherd. German Shepherds can be really rough with their toys. So, we recommend some sort of brand specific for rough-playing dogs, such as Kong. These boxes will offer toys, treats, and more for your dog, but these boxes can be pretty expensive too. Additional Costs to Factor In In addition to initial costs and monthly payments, there are some other additional factors you need to think about. For starters, obedience training is really important for dogs of this size. Obedience training can be a bit expensive at first, but it will be worth it in the long run. You need to pay for a pet sitter or kennel whenever you go on vacations and your dog does not come with you. If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy, you may also have to pay to replace or fix items the puppy damages. Think about accidents or unforeseen illnesses too. These can cost a whole lot in vet visits. Owning a German Shepherd on a Budget If you want a German Shepherd but are worried about destroying your budget, there are ways that you can own one of these wonderful dogs without spending a fortune either. Unfortunately, there is little you can change about the price of these dogs up front, but you can save on the monthly expenses. The most important tip for taking care of a German Shepherd on a budget is to know when to splurge. When it comes to dog food, make sure to select high-quality food. This will be more expensive upfront, but it will ensure that your dog is healthy for as long as possible, resulting in fewer bills. Splurging on heavy-duty toys is another great idea. These toys will cost more at first, but they should last much longer than cheap ones. For instance, there are a lot of coupons and promo codes you can use when purchasing toys, food, and other items for your German Shepherd. Even if you find coupons, only spend money on the essentials. Not to mention, buy crates and beds that are suitable for the dog as it grows. Many people make the mistake of buying crates and beds suitable for the puppy, but the puppy soon outgrows them. The initial cost primarily accounts for the dog itself and any other items required when bringing the dog home for the first time. Even after the German Shepherd has made your home its home, you will still have to pay some pretty hefty bills for the remainder of its life. Although the initial and monthly costs for this dog are a bit high, they are required for this dog to live a happy life. If you cannot afford to provide a German Shepherd the sort of life it needs and deserves, simply do not get a German Shepherd. You can get this puppy elsewhere for a lesser price, but you want to ensure you receive a healthy dog with great genes. Should you buy a German Shepherd puppy or an older dog? The answer to this will be based on your preference and lifestyle. But there are also pros and cons to buying a puppy or an adult dog. Adopt whichever feels right to you. If you intend to buy a German Shepherd, know that the breeding of dogs is more involved than just putting a sire and dam together. Reputable breeders look into the health and genetics of the parents. When the puppies are born, they get them health-tested, too. For example, the puppies get hip x-rays, elbow x-rays, thyroid tests, cardiac tests, and a canine ophthalmologist exam. In most cases, the breeder will ensure that the puppies are up-to-date on their vaccinations before going to their new owners. Are large GSD dogs more expensive than small ones? No, because a purebred German Shepherd is a large dog and only comes in one size. Male GSDs can grow to be 24 to 26 inches 61 to 66 cm , with female GSDs being slightly smaller at 22 to 24 inches 59 to 61 cm. Do German Shepherds that train as service dogs cost more? Yes, German Shepherds that are trained as service dogs are more expensive. This is because they are selectively bred and go through special training. Bloodline affects the purchase fee. The West German Show Line is bred based on the breed standard. They make great house protectors, are social, and need a high amount of physical activity. Working line German Shepherds are fully trained with various skills and excel in obedience. Some of the most expensive German Shepherds are the ones that look different. For example, this pooch can come in a few rare coat colors. The colors may include Panda, Isabella, or Black. In addition, some German Shepherds might have one or two blue eyes. Take into account whether you want your German Shepherd as a family dog or a working protection dog. A companion will be less expensive. In addition, the litter size of German Shepherds is about 6 to 10 puppies. Therefore, the more puppies in a litter, the less the puppies will cost. When searching for a German Shepherd puppy, your best bet is to go through a reputable breeder rather than a search aid site. This is because you can get to know the breeder during the process. There is nothing wrong with being a hobby breeder, but they may have less experience than a professional one. For example, test their knowledge of the German Shepherd breed as a whole. Ask them about the family tree and the health history of the parents and the puppies. In addition, discuss the temperament and traits of the dogs as well. Finally, ask if the puppies have been crate trained and gone to the vet. The breeder should be able to answer these questions flawlessly. Alternatively, you can find a German Shepherd rescue. In addition, you might find puppies as well as adults. These factors include traits of the dog, but it also depends on where you adopt the dog as well. Age Age is one of the biggest factors in pricing a German Shepherd. A puppy is more costly than an adult dog. German Shepherd puppies aged 8 to 12 weeks will be the most expensive. This is because owners want to train the puppy to their lifestyle. Therefore, puppies older than 12 weeks will be more affordable. Adopting an adult GSD dog is less desirable, but these pups need loving, forever homes, too. Size German Shepherds are a large dog breed, growing up to 22 to 26 inches 56 to 66 cm tall. If a breeder advertises Miniature German Shepherds, they may cost more, but there is no such thing. That pooch is most likely a mixed breed, or the purebred has dwarfism. Since purebreds are more desirable, they cost more. However, hybrids are often healthier than purebreds. Lineage and bloodlines If your puppy comes from a champion bloodline and is a show-quality German Shepherd dog, then you can expect to pay more. Breeder certifications, registration, and pedigree When it comes to looking for a reputable breeder, be sure to do your research. A responsible breeder will care about finding the puppies a loving, forever home rather than making a profit. A qualified breeder will charge their puppies higher but at a reasonable fee. Gender Believe it or not, male and female German Shepherd dogs cost about the same price. Male GSDs are stronger and have more energy. Coat Colors and Markings German Shepherds with different colored coats and markings will be more pricey. This is because they are more difficult to breed since they rely on recessive genes. Did you know this doggo can also be long-haired? You can learn more about long-haired German Shepherds here. Health screenings and medical expenses Most reputable breeders will get the puppies health screened and take care of certain medical expenses, such as their first vaccinations. If they do, then you can expect to pay more. For instance, if the breed is in high demand where the breeder is, you can expect to pay more. Other factors The litter size is another factor. For instance, if there are more puppies in a litter, the cost will decrease because the breeder has more puppies available for adoption. In addition, if the parents have a proven record of being show dogs or breeding dogs, that will increase the puppy prices. A friendly German Shepherd dog with a veterinarian Health care and veterinary bills: how much are vet expenses for GSDs? Fortunately, German Shepherds are generally healthy. This includes general physical exams, vaccinations such as rabies , and heartworm and flea prevention. GSDs also need additional vaccinations. For example, Leptospirosis if they are exposed to wildlife. Medical Expenses for German Shepherds Range. If your breeder had not run these genetic tests on your dog—or if you adopt a German Shepherd from a rescue or shelter, you can run the Embark Dog DNA Test using a simple saliva test you can perform at home. Dogs with DM first lose coordination in their hind legs, then they lose muscle mass and eventually the ability to walk. It is caused by a lack of one of the proteins needed for blood to clot properly. Dogs with hemophilia A will often suffer from uncontrolled bleeding, most commonly into the joints. Uric acid is a waste product that is normally eliminated from the body through the kidneys. When the kidneys are not able to remove enough uric acid, it builds up in the blood and can cause health problems. Dogs with hyperuricosuria are at risk for developing bladder stones, kidney stones, and other health problems. P-glycoprotein is involved in the transport of drugs and other molecules across cell membranes. Drugs that are known to cause adverse reactions in MDR1 dogs include digoxin, ivermectin, loperamide, and milbemycin. There are several different types of MPS, each caused by a deficiency in a specific enzyme needed to break down mucopolysaccharides. It is caused by a genetic mutation that impairs the ability of the blood to clot properly. This can lead to frequent and sometimes severe bleeding events which can be difficult to control, even with the help of medications. Dogs with this condition are at an increased risk for bleeding and may require lifelong monitoring and medical management. Symptoms include weight loss, decreased appetite, vomiting, and increased water consumption. Affected dogs have problems with the development of their skin, hair, nails, and teeth. They may also have problems with sweating and the function of their tears and salivary glands. Dogs with this disorder usually have a very thin coat of hair, often with areas that are bald or have very thin hair. Their skin may be dry and cracked, and they may develop sores on their skin. Nails may be abnormally shaped or missing altogether, and teeth may be missing or poorly developed. Dogs with X-linked ectodermal dysplasia often experience overheating. Attend a sanctioned dog show and talk with breeders and competitors for recommendations. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations regarding reputable breeders. Check the Facebook page of the breeder and read through the comments. Remember, however, that comments can be deleted by the page owner. The breeder should be happy to share the name and contact information for customers. Ask questions. Lots of questions. The breeder should be glad to share the test results from the health tests and screenings and should be happy to let you meet at least the mother if not the sire as well of the German Shepherd Dog puppies. Ask how often the dogs are bred. Ask to tour the kennels. Are they well maintained? Do the dogs look healthy? Beware of operations that will not let you tour the kennels and breeders that want to meet you in a parking lot to hand over the puppy. Be prepared for questions. The breeder should ask YOU questions as well; be suspicious if the breeder has no questions about your past history with pets, your living situation, etc. The breeder should want to know how much experience you have with herding breeds, what your training plans are and your plans for exercising the dog. Ask if the breeder will take the German Shepherd puppy—or adult dog—back if necessary. Ask for a contract. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back and provide a full refund. German Shepherd breeders may adopt out of the area but, nonetheless, you will want to go to the breeder to meet the parents, view the kennels and bring home your puppy in person. This will add to your expenses—but breeders that transport a puppy by air are putting the dog at risk. If you want to buy a German Shepherd Dog from an online breeder, please think again. There are numerous scams; people spend thousands of dollars for a dog and never receive a puppy. AKC warns potential pet parents to be wary of any seller asking for payment by Venmo, in gift cards or as a wire transfer. Dogs purchased from puppy mills can mean years of heartache and expensive veterinary care—and perpetuation of a cruel industry. The pros of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder: You may be able to select a puppy—including a choice of gender. A reputable breeder will be passionate about German Shepherds and will a resource for years to come. The cons of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder You will pay far more for a cattle dog from a breeder than a rescue or shelter. If you find a breeder who has German Shepherd puppies for sale at prices much lower than you are seeing from other breeders, you must suspect you are dealing with a backyard breeder who has not done health screening, with an online seller who is operating a puppy mill or with someone who is running a scam. You will need to wait until puppies are available. You will need to do your own due diligence to select a reputable breeder. German Shepherd Dogs in rescues are far less expensive that those at a breeder. Puppies under a year old will be the most costly. This group provides funding to a network of GSD rescues — they do not have dogs themselves for adoption. They have a list of affiliated rescues that can help located adoptable GSDs in your region. A breed rescue is, like the name suggests, a pet rescue that is specifically for one breed of dog. These are generally small non-profit groups that operate through a foster system of volunteers who love the breed. German Shepherd rescues specialize in German Shepherds of all ages; some have primarily purebred German Shepherds while others may also have adoptable Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds. How to Find Breed Rescues Along with the list mentioned above, many breed rescues list their adoptable dogs on large adoption sites such as:. If you are looking to buy a German Shepherd puppy, then you should find one from a reputable breeder. While these puppies are more expensive, a reputable breeder can guarantee the health and behavior of the puppy. These dogs are prone to genetic diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia. These health issues can be avoided by genetically testing the parents, which is something reputable breeders usually do. When improperly raised puppies might have behavioral issues and can cause a lot of damage if they bite someone. A good breeder will have their dogs pass a temperament test. German Shepherd Dog Price While most dogs in shelters are adults, adopting a German Shepherd is a great way to find a dog without supporting unethical breeding. Sometimes these hardworking shepherd dogs are given up because they are very energetic. Not everyone is able to take care of a dog that needs a lot of attention and exercise. Some people buy a German Shepherd puppy without understanding the work involved in caring for this breed. Why Are They So Expensive? Breeding a healthy and well-behaved German Shepherd puppy is not easy! It is not as simple as crossing German Shepherds together. However, if you want a puppy of good temperament that is genetically healthy, there are other costs involved in the breeding and raising. This is especially important for a German Shepherd. You do not want a puppy that grows up to be aggressive or that suffers from mobility issues due to hip and elbow dysplasia. Papers A paperless German Shepherd puppy will be the cheapest. Typically breeders invest as little as possible in these pups. You get a puppy just how it is, without knowing its pedigree or background. A puppy with health certifications, temperament test results, and registration papers costs more than this. However, those papers will be beneficial not just for you, but also the puppy. This means your puppy meets the breed standard and is a purebred dog. The last thing you want is to buy a German Shepherd wolf-mix thinking it is purebred. Veterinarian Visits Reputable breeders not only genetically health test the parents, but they will also take the puppy to see a vet before 8 weeks for a basic health check. During these visits breeders will also have the puppies vaccinated, dewormed and placed on preventatives. When you buy a German Shepherd puppy from a reputable breeder, they will offer you a health guarantee. Most will also be able to provide you proof that the puppy has passed a temperament test. Training Some breeders also take the time to socialize and train their puppies. Many experienced breeders have a specialized training program that begins the process of potty training and basic obedience. This will mean you have an easier time housetraining your puppy, but you will have to pay for their efforts! These are all good signs that the puppy you are buying is of good quality. This will mean you are more likely to avoid any temperament issues or having to pay for vet visits to diagnose and treat hip and elbow dysplasia. Bloodlines Breeders who focus on breeding championship bloodlines will charge more for their puppies. A family might not need such a high-quality German Shepherd. All they need is a healthy and well-behaved puppy that will bring them years of happiness. However, there are many people who need a working dog or show dog. The most expensive dogs are those that are bred to be champions or protective and hard-working. Some breeders spend thousands of dollars just training a world class service dog. A family friendly guard dog with a protective temperament is not easy to breed consistently. Breeders have to factor in not just the genetics, but also the temperament and training. Origin The most expensive types of German Shepherds are those that are imported directly from Germany. Breeders must pay to stud and import these dogs which is not cheap. Since the German Shepherd breed originated in Germany, breeders in the US import dogs from Germany to breed puppies with a purebred lineage. Breeding in Europe is more regulated so the bloodlines are better protected. These puppies are known as European German Shepherds and are slightly different. They are smaller, have straighter backs and brighter coat colors. Some people think they look similar to a belgian malinois. Most European dogs are bred to be working dogs, while American dogs are more frequently bred for companionship. This is the same for American and German Rottweilers and American vs. European Dobermans. All of these breeder will be able to provide: Pedigree and kennel club registration. Documents that certify the puppy is free of any disease and has been checked by a veterinarian. A health warranty. Health records that guarantee the parents are genetically healthy and will not pass on elbow or hip dysplasia. These German Shepherd breeders all breed their puppies in accordance with the breed standard. None of them will sell puppies that are not registered with the American Kennel Club. Another good place to start looking for breeders is the American Kennel Club marketplace. Many of these puppies are bred to be family dogs and come with their papers. As you start looking into more well-known breeders or those that produce dogs of championship or working bloodlines, then the price of a German Shepherd starts to increase. Julia was a German Shepherd bred by the Harrison K-9 facility, highly trained in protection. She could also understand commands in three different languages. Her intelligence, as well as her ability to protect, were why she was priced so highly. Julia was bought by a billionaire businessman in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The rarest coat color is panda, which is why it is also the most expensive. These German Shepherds are black and white. It is a piebald pattern where the black coat is splotched with large patches of white. Some puppies can have other colors like tan, instead of white. Panda dogs are purebred, but the rarity of this mutation makes them very hard to find. There are very few breeders that sell the panda color. And he actually cost nothing! By the end of his life, Rin Tin Tin had appeared in 27 Hollywood films. Rin Tin Tin most notably helped Warner Bros. But these dogs come in more than just this classic color! There are 11 colors that are recognized by the breed standard. Check out the table below for some German Shepherd prices based on coat color. The tan color covers the chest, belly and legs. White A white puppy has a furry coat that is entirely white, allowing it to blend in with the snow. Its eyes and nose are black as coal. Black A black German Shepherd has a coat that is entirely black. Any other color would classify them as a bi-color. Blue A blue German Shepherd is not literally blue, but has a gray color with a bluish hue. Sable The sable color is one of the most common colors, but is a bit more interesting than the black and tan. The hairs of these dogs have bands of tan and black, giving them a very unique coloring. Some of the factors that contribute to this cost are: Food. If a breeder tries to tell you that his puppies are healthy because their parents never had any issues — do not believe him! It is impossible to diagnose e. Where can you find cheap German Shepherd Dogs? The question is — do you want to purchase a dog with questionable health and temperament? These dogs often are not purebred German Shepherd puppies, but are mixed with e. Labradors, Pitbulls or Golden Retrievers. If you end up with a dog with genetically based health conditions however, be prepared to spend a multiple of the original purchase price on vet costs! Temperament and behavior While a lot of good manners can be taught through consistent training, temperament is genetic to a certain level. When you buy an extra cheap German Shepherd puppy, you not only get a dog with questionable health, but also with unpredictable temperament! Even aggression can be genetic and can be passed on from the mom and dad to the offspring. You can save yourself a lot of time, nerves and money spent on future behavioral training by getting a well-bred and more expensive dog. What is the most expensive type of German Shepherd? Like in many dog breeds, certain rare German Shepherd colors are much more expensive than the most common colors and patterns. It is much more important that your puppy has a sound temperament and fits in well with your family and lifestyle than that he has a certain rare look. These dogs are mutts German Shepherds mixed with Miniature Poodles, Shelties or other smaller breeds. Once more, be certain to not decide on your future dog based on looks alone. A stable temperament and good health is much more integral than a certain size or weight. Working lines vs show lines The German Shepherd was originally bred as a working dog. Since his original use as a shepherd dog however, he has filled many different roles — from guarding properties over being used in the show ring to participating in Schutzhund and IPO trails. Depending on which lines your German Shepherd Dog comes from, the prices can vary a lot! Show line German Shepherds are the dogs that are bred for conformation shows. These are the type of dogs you should decide on if you would like a shepherd puppy as a pet and companion animal. If you are interested in using your German Shepherd as a protection dog and to participate in IPO trials, you should pick one from working lines. There are a lot of highly successful working line breeders both in North America and Europe. For this price, you get an absolutely flawless dog with extensive skills and perfect obedience. Some US dog owners interested in Schutzhund choose to import a puppy from old European working lines. While this might sound insanely high for a pet dog owner, for Schutzhund enthusiasts it is a typical price for a pedigreed German Shepherd pup. How much does it cost a month to own a German Shepherd? This will cover the basics: high-quality food and regular vet checks. Some German Shepherd owners spend considerably more money. Professional grooming is necessary for many German Shepherd owners, as these dogs shed heavily. This breeds tends to exhibit several behavioral issues that can be difficult to fix for first-time dog owners, including: Separation anxiety.

Geoff values this breed and understands the unique challenges that come with breeding Bulldogs and Frenchies. Prior to raising and breeding bulldogs, Geoff and his wife raised and bred Boxers. Geoff has always been fascinated with the Bulldog breed and has a strong desire to see the breed excel in health, temperament, and confirmation. The owners of Topbrass, Mark and Dawn Berryman, have been breeding Bulldogs for many years and Geoff had been looking for over two years for the right Bulldog from a reputable breeder. Priscilla was a surprise to Miranda; however, the cuteness of a Bulldog Puppy will always win skeptics over. A couple of summers ago, Geoff snuck another Bulldog into the house when he brought Queen Vashti in to "puppy sit". Miranda got wise to the scam pretty quick questioning who puppy sits for 4 months?
