I have had 2 bischon s. One for 14 years and the second one for 13 years. My heart needs to be filled back up with some puppy love! She is the most awesome, smart, loving, patient, calm dog ever. Amazes me everyday and she is only 13 weeks old. Do not shed. His name was cookie on the site… but we named him Enzo. He grew up in a pen in a barn… so I believe that helped out with crate training. He sleeps through the night and is just so chill. I am so happy that we got him through them. Just need to be a bit patient. Overall , great process. They were out there for about 45 minutes jumping in and out of the water and chasing schools of fish toward shore. In the off season, sure, but still — what a view and what a cool old hotel! Gracie is a 5th generation bulldogge from Rocky Mountain Rawhide and Jenny her very capable guardian — and now her outright owner. When it became apparent that the cancer treatment that I had gone through in and had seriously impacted my stamina and physical reserves I knew I needed to stop breeding my bulldogges. The problem was that the cancer treatment left me unable to stay up all night and be an active participant in the birthing process of my bulldogge litters. Poodle labor lasts a few hours — maybe as much as 5 or 6 hours. Bulldogges can be in labor for 12 to 24 hours — easily. And you can not leave them along during that time. You can not go to the store, stop and cook dinner for your family — and most of all — you can not fall asleep. They can not be left alone. So I had to let someone else take over. Too big of a risk to take. And she said YES! Thank goodness she did! And I am so glad! This summer to be a busy one! We HAVE been very busy and will continue to be all summer. We retired Maya this year but kept one of her silver daughters, and also kept several other goldendoodle daughters from other mamas. Solo, already in a great guardian home with a wonderful family, has passed all of his genetic tests, achieved his National and International Champion Titles, his DNA is back and the OFA Preliminaries are in. He is good to go and has taken over for his dad, Rowdy, who was retired last year as one of our two miniature poodle studs. Chewie is now a pet and is retired both from the show ring and from our breeding line. Solo will carry on. We have three new International Champion Puppies. Rowdy, now retired and living the good life of a pampered pet in Boulder, CO produced all three. Both Cathy, with Tootie and Michelle, with Solo did a fantastic job showing the puppies even though they had never even SEEN a dog show before — much less taken a puppy into a show ring. After Talking to Syndi, I felt comfortable enough to send her a deposit for a dog. Syndi kept our family with updates and photos. Only problem was that was our first winter blizzard, which I did get stuck in. Syndi stayed up and meet me at am down the street from her home because the snow was too deep for my vehicle to continue. I believe we had 27 inches of snow by the time I made it home. She had her first vet appointment yesterday at Hunter Mill Animal Hospital here in Oakton, Virginia and the veterinarian commented on how healthy and well-mannered she is at just 8-weeks. Today, I took her to work with me for a few hours and she behaved so well and just won everyone over at my school.I think we may have a new mascot. She is also a champ with the crate training.She is also impressing us with her quick housebreaking. She has only had two accidents. When the time came for us to choose our puppy Syndi was awesome in assisting us with the match. Because of the distance we could not visit the litter to choose our puppy in person, however I explained to her the puppy that I had in mind based on sex, size, color, temperment. When we arrived I was more than pleasantly surprised. The puppy was even more beautiful than what I was expecting. Everything about her was perfect and her color beautiful. Everything was ready for us. The puppy had been vet checked, wormed, and given her first shots. There were no unexpected surprises. Bailey is very healthy and smart. She just finished puppy kindergarden and knows several commands including sit, down, and come. She is very attentive for being just thirteen weeks old. She loves to be around all people including women, men, and children. She likes being around cats and other dogs as well. She sleeps all night in her crate and toilet training is coming along we have an active household and sometimes she slips away to another location and has an accident but I take the blame for that. We are the very happy owners of "Max", a male cockapoo puppy, who just turned five months. We first met Max when he was just six weeks old, and it was love at first sight. The hundreds of miles of the long journey home were interrupted by rest stops as needed to allow Lola frequent opportunities for leg stretching and potty breaks. Her first visit to the Veterinarian was a breeze as Lola is happy and healthy — just as Syndi promised. Lola is very adept at knowing when we have enough energy to play, and she happily jumps right in to play. She is equally adept at knowing when snuggling, sleeping or quietly watching TV is what we need, and she happily settles into that mode as needed. For the last 5 years, lupus has been a daily battle. The doctors have not found the right combination to get my immune system to settle down. While I have had good days, the tests always show the disease is active and I am at risk for damage to my organs and systems. Since having the furry stress reliever in my house, I noticed I am feeling better. It is hard not to with those doodle eyes and smiles. We walk most days at least a little. When I went back to the doctor this week, he said my blood work showed I am in a medical remission. That is doctor-speak for "I have to take the medicine, but the illness is not destroying anything or giving me much trouble. Thank God! Anyway, this doctor is not the king of tact. He said it did not make sense because all the medicine is the same. He wanted to know what I was doing differently. He asked a bunch of questions. None of it was what he was looking for. I randomly said that I got Delilah about the time the numbers started to improve. He asked a few more questions and said "Well, that is it. The dog put you into remission. After a few minutes, I opened the door to see if he was coming back. The nurse said she thought he was done. She opened the chart and started to laugh. I asked what was up and she turned it around for me to see. He had written "Dog works better than drugs. Keep dog and come back in 6 months. Kelli, I want to thank you and your family for Delilah. We have posted many times about how diabetic-alert dogs not only make life easier for those suffering from type 1 diabetes, but these animals can be life-savers. Clover joined the McKenzie family to watch over six-year-old, and just 8 days after she arrived, she made a fateful decision: She left her spot next to River's bed about 20 minutes after he was tucked in, padded into Matt and Bethany's bedroom, and with a mighty SMACK of her paw on the ground, got their attention. They got up and went in to check on River. A quick check of his blood sugar levels, and they had dropped, significantly. This is far below safe levels for a Type-1 diabetic. He was shaky, and we couldn't get him to come to. He eyes were rolling back in his head and he was very sweaty. So we gave him some juice, but he was unable to get his lips around the straw. Incredible stuff! Clover Mandy This is a post from Linda - owner of Mandy - on the forum. Linda and Mandy make an amazing team! Mandy is a sweet and mellow dog. She is always aware of what's going on around her and wants to be in the center of the action even if it's just to check out the scene. Mandy has become the neighborhood dog as everyone loves her and thinks she is so sweet. We have 2 people who have been afraid of dogs since childhood but love our Mandy and will always stop by to pet her. She is a certified Pet Therapy dog and made over 50 visits to a local children's hospital before it became too stressful for her. In the 3 years of visiting sick children she had some pretty awesome experiences that I was fortunate enough to share with her. One child about 6 years old hadn't walked in months and the hospital staff was trying to get her out of her bed just to stand. Her father spotted Mandy and I in the hallway and asked if we could come over to his daughter's room and wait outside the door. The little girl managed to not only get out of bed but with the help of her walker made it to the door so she could pet Mandy. The little girl cried all the way and kept asking for Mandy to come inside but with the help of her Nurse she made it. By the time the girl met us at the door we were all in tears. On a separate occasion we entered a room where a Speech Therapist had arrived and was working with a child to try and get her to talk. As soon as Mandy walked into the room the little girl said "dog" and started to climb out of bed. The Therapist asked if we could join her on a little walk and while we were walking the child continued to talk to Mandy. Before I knew it we had two Doctors and several Nurses following us and listening to the child. True Miracles! When we got Mandy I had never heard about Pet Therapy but after watching her with our Granddaughters and other children I knew Mandy was extra special. She is 9! Mombo is owned by 2 very special people. Daniel wrote about Mambo for our forum and it pretty much tells her story. We've shown excerpts here. If you search the forum for "Mambo" there are some amazing stories there Daniel has posted over the years. Mambo was actually purchased for my Wife, Terry. The idea with Mambo was Terry would take her to all her training classes, as that would have Mambo respond to Her commands. From the very beginning we had intended to have Terry be a Therapy Dog handler with Mambo. We let Kelli know this and it factored into her choosing Mambo for us. Mambo started training at only 12 weeks old, starting with basic puppy class. As you will read with all the doodles who start young, they stand out, head and shoulders above other breeds at puppy class, and at more advanced classes as well. Mambo had to take time off from about 8 months old to about a year and a half old because my Mom had moved in with us and was in dire need, not only for help, but to be watched over. Way before Mambo went to formal Therapy Dog classes, she was caring for my Mom. There was one very touching moment, where it all seemed to 'click' for Mambo.My Mom was trying to get out of a chair. I would have of course helped her, but for as long as possible, she wanted to be in charge of her own mobility. I watched her try and get up about 5 times, once after another. Mambo less than a year old, sat in front of her and watched. After about the fifth try, my Mom was frustrated. She just held out both hands perpendicular to the floor, and shook them in front of Mambo, saying nothing. Within a moment Mambo put her head between the hands. My Mom latched on to her head and Mambo slowly backed up. My Mom was UP! That one behavior was the start of it All. Mambo figured out at that Moment, her place in life. Soon she was helping my Mom get up every time, and not long thereafter Mom almost tumbled down during a walk, but reached for Mambo a little hard and I think hurt Mambo a little, but Mambo did not go down, and neither did my Mom. I guess out of a sense of self preservation, Mambo quit prancing and started paying attention. My Mom I suppose fortunately, if she is to fall, most frequently falls backward, and these days Mambo watches for that and uses her shoulder or side, to stop the fall before a fall to the ground is inevitable. Mambo with Terry Mambo returned to Class at about a year and a half. She was taught the 'normal' Therapy Dog things, such as be gentle, allow yourself to be stroked, don't bark unless requested to do so, and so on. All her classes were at Petco. Once she had mastered the basic stuff, the Therapy Dog trainer asked if since Mambo was a very large dog, as far as Therapy dogs go the average weight is about 5 pounds could Mambo be trained in special things like assisting those in wheelchairs and walkers. It was a challenge and one Terry was up for. So Mambo started training to walk along the side of folks in walkers, which are noisy without bumping them. She did the same for canes, and finally for wheelchairs. There was one person in a wheelchair for life, who was very tiny and had trouble with a manual wheel chair. The two of them became fast friends, and on their own, with time worked out a method there she would loop Mambo's leash around the front of the arm of the wheel chair, and would pull the woman around the store. From early in her house training, if Mambo picked up something she should not have, we said 'thank you Mambo' and held out our hand, she would give us what she had in her mouth and we would replace it with either a toy or a treat. Mambo transferred this training to the wheel chair lady, and if in the store she would drop something to the floor, Mambo would retrieve it and put it in her lap for a treat. Mambo is not a big treat eater, so a perfectly acceptable treat is a Thank You Mambo, a smile and a pat on the head. Most members of the organization have tiny or extremely passive dogs. Most of the handlers wanted to go to schools, or day care centers, or assisted living places. There was a HUGE need for dogs to go to depressing 'end of life' centers, or places where people go after amputations. There was a huge need for dogs to go to places where they could help with people sitting up, or stretching or moving in general, using the strength of the dog to help. This has become Mambo's specialty. Visiting such places is emotionally very hard on both the dog and the handler. A few Months ago Terry was seriously considering switching to Hospital duty, mostly involving cancer patients, many of whom are kids. She was told what a huge difference she made, and even though she is not allowed to take any pictured in the facility, she was shown to a post board, which contained a clandestine acquired set of photos, of Mambo with her patients. Terry noted that even if they were in pain while stretching, or struggling to get up, if they were touching Mambo, they usually had some form of smile on their faces. All pups are different. Some cope much better than others. This is what I do - I have a cardboard box with blankets by my bed. The pup arrives at about 11am and I do what is suggested in the link above - treats and naps in the crate with the door open through the day. At bed time I pop the pup in the crate then wait by the crate, door closed with my hand in if the pup is whimpering and leave once the pup is asleep. I go to the pup at 4am ish for a wee break no interaction, no talking, just wee and back to bed. I do this for a few days then start standing in the room and leaving when the pup is asleep for a day or two. After that I just leave. I have a heat pad for winter pups, leave a ticking clock and the radio quietly on a talk station. If the pup is wide awake after the 4am wee break I snooze in the front room with the pup on my knee, they soon sleep longer. So I think you just have to see what kind of puppy you get really, in terms of what will or will not be ok for it. I personally am not a big believer in the whole 'start as you mean to go on' thing apart from training, there you definitely should start as you mean to go on and I've never really worried about making pups sleep alone and things like that because they have to 'get used to it' - so if putting the crate by the sofa suits you, I'd do that. I think new puppies are tiny babies, and if they are upset, then they need comfort and company. You can always move the crate away slowly to where you want it to be if your puppy has trouble sleeping without a human. Just do it gradually. Having said that, maybe I have just been really lucky, but neither of my dogs have any problems with much. They both turned out happy go lucky dogs. Choosing the right crate for crate training Lab puppy Getting ready to crate train your puppy means you need to buy a crate. And the size and type of crate do matter. Size of crate for crate training retrievers You want the crate to be large enough that your puppy is comfortable laying in the crate, but not so big that your puppy can walk around. The puppy should feel snug and protected, but not uncomfortable. The unfortunate thing about crate training this way, is that it means that as your puppy grows, you will need progressively larger crates. While inconvenient and bit more costly, this really is the best way to crate train your puppy. But if you do not wish to buy multiple crates, there are other methods. Some people buy a large crate, the size their dog will need as an adult and then section off some of the crate. Blocking off a portion of the crate will give the puppy that tighter, den-like, experience and ensure that the puppy cannot walk around inside the crate. While this can work, be careful what you use to section the crate off. You would not want to use a material that can be chewed or ingested by your puppy. Puppies are naturally chewers, so keep this in mind. Type of crate for crate training retriever Technically, any kind of crate will work for crate training. But over the years we have found that some crates just simply work better. Plastic crates seem to be the best option. They can be found easily at a local pet store, superstore, or even bought online. There are some inexpensive options that provide the protection and privacy of a den-like experience for the dogs. In addition, they have a solid bottom so should your dog get sick, or if you are in the process of housebreaking, cleanup is rather easy. Wire crates , the kind that you can see right through do not seem to work as well as plastic crates. Wire crates are wide open, they do not provide dogs the opportunity to get away and relax. The wire offers little protection and privacy, and many dogs do not like them as dens. We discuss crate options in more detail here. How to crate train a Lab puppy? Crate training is easiest when done with young puppies. We recommend starting crate training the day you bring the pup home from the breeder. Often this is at around weeks old. The sooner you start, the easier the process will be. Crate training can be done with older dogs, but it may take more effort and patience on your part. Step 1 — Let puppy explore the crate The first step is to place the crate in an area that is frequented by the puppy. Prop the door open in some way, a small bungee works well and let your puppy explore the crate on his own. Puppies are naturally curious, so often they will walk right into the crate on their own. It is best if you do not move the crate around the house. Instead, find a place for the crate where the dog will spend a majority of their time and leave it there. The crate should not be right next to a bed or a bedroom. Your puppy will be sleeping in their crate and your puppy will make more noise and wake up more if the crate is close to you. Also, your puppy is bound to make some noise the first few nights in the crate. Step 2- Establish a routine Develop a routine of putting your puppy down to nap inside the crate. You can put one or two small toys in the crate if you wish and a small towel that you do not care if it gets ruined. I know this sounds self-explanatory, but I have seen it. Also, do not put a dog bed in the crate. A dog bed is too big and bulky to fit into crates well and your puppy will simply chew it to pieces or accidently have a potty accident on it. Once that happens, the bed will have the scent of potty and will work against your housebreaking efforts. That is natural and nothing to be worried about. Simply walk away from the crate and allow the puppy to settle down. Depending on the nature of your puppy this may take a few minutes to an hour or more. It is vital that you stay away from the crate during this time. If you follow this advice, your puppy will quickly learn to be content in the crate and over time the noise will become less and less until they finally understand they must stay in the crate. Step 3 — Watch the clock While I suggest you do not take your puppy out of the crate while they are making noise, you do need to keep an eye on how long your puppy has been in the crate. You do not want your puppy to have an accident in the crate if you can help it. With week old puppies, I start by leaving the puppy in the crate for 1 hour at a time followed by playtime. As the puppy gets older, they can naturally hold their bladder longer. This should go without saying, but you should never leave your dog in a crate 24 hours a day every day. Socialization of young puppies is vital. Block the crate door open again. The door should be blocked open anytime the puppy has not been placed in the crate for some quiet time. The puppy will see or smell the toys and go inside the crate to get them. Some people play crate games. They will throw a toy inside the crate so that the puppy must go inside the crate to retrieve it. These games can help your dog become extremely comfortable with their crate. Over time you will notice that your puppy is not afraid to go inside their crate while the door is open. Sometimes, they will even go inside the crate and lay down when they are tired. This is the reaction you are seeking. How long does it take to crate train a dog? There is no set amount of time it takes to crate train a dog. Each dog will progress on their own schedule. But if you continue to place your puppy inside the crate on a routine basis and make the crate available to your puppy at all times, you will reap the benefits of having successfully crate trained your puppy. Final thoughts on how to crate train a Labrador puppy Crate training is a greatly beneficial thing for Labrador puppies and other retriever breeds. It can mimic a den for these beautiful animals and give them a safe and secure place where they can rest without stress or fear. This helps them with emotional stability and can curb behavior issues. It also makes for a more enjoyable home life with less dog induced strife. How to crate train a Labrador puppy. You can find a summary of these in my crate training schedule chart below Stage 1 Introduction to crate training for puppies from 8 weeks old This stage covers the first week that you bring your puppy home. Your objective at stage 1 is simply to get the puppy used to being in and around the crate with the door open. Leave the door open Start by placing puppy in his crate frequently and each time you place him in there drop several little edible treats through the roof for him. Just let him come straight out again when he has finished his treats. This introduces the crate as a fun and enjoyable place to be. He will soon come to associate this phrase with going into his crate for a treat Closing the door briefly The next step is to close the crate door momentarily and then open it again. Leave it shut only long enough for the puppy to finish his treat and notice that the door is closed. Then let him out. Do not wait until he gets upset or cries. Repeat many, many times during the course of the next day or two. If he is left alone at night whilst he is still homesick he is likely to howl, and howling in his new crate is not a habit we want to establish. Tending to your puppy during the night If the box is right up against the side of your bed, you can put your hand in and comfort him if he cries. Moving your puppy downstairs at night After the first three or four nights, or by the end of the first week, your puppy can be placed in his crate in the kitchen before you go up to bed at night. So if you put him to bed at midnight, you will probably need to get up around 5am to let him out for a wee to begin with. If a puppy has fallen asleep in his crate and slept for more than a couple of hours then you will need to let him out if he wakes up crying. Getting more sleep! If all goes well, you can stretch this five hours out by 15 minutes or so a night until you are getting seven hours sleep. If he wets the bed you will need to get up earlier the next night. And some puppies will be 12 to 14 weeks before they can cope this long. You can find lot more information on teaching your puppy to be clean and dry in our potty training sections. Crate training during the day There is no immediate need to crate your new puppy during the day for more than a few minutes at a time. The main purpose of crating a puppy during the day is to Help the puppy learn to hold onto the contents of his bladder for a bit longer. To keep him safe when you are busy for short periods, or if you need to leave the house for a while. To give him chance to calm down or a break from small children. However, you do need to get the puppy used to spending longer periods in the crate in preparation for being left alone from time to time when he is older. So gradually, you will accustom the puppy to a few longer spells in his crate. These are tough hollow rubber toys that you fill with mushy food and freeze. You can freeze several Kongs at once by standing them on a baking tray in the freezer. Each time you put the puppy in his crate for more than a couple of minutes, you will leave a frozen food filled Kong in there to keep him company. Puppies love these and will soon grow to associate the crate with the pleasure of the frozen Kong. How to get the puppy used to longer crate times Once you have got to the end of the first week and the puppy has accepted the crate as a nice place to be, the next task is to get the puppy to accept the closed door for longer periods of time. This may take a day or two. Place him in the crate with his frozen kong and close the door for 30 seconds. The idea is to leave the door closed for a few seconds longer each time you crate the puppy. But it is very important only to open the door when the puppy has been silent for several seconds. What to do if the puppy cries in his crate If the puppy starts to whimper or howl you will need to turn away from the crate and ignore him. Wait for the silence as he stops crying and gets to work on his puppy kong. Tell him what a good dog he is. Let him out immediately and go back to much briefer periods of closed door for a while. Try ten seconds or five. Build up again gradually, but do not be tempted to avoid crating him because it upsets him. Once the puppy is happy in his crate, you can use it to help with his potty training. Until then, make sure that you crate him for very short periods when you know his bladder is empty. Otherwise he will wet himself when he gets upset. Puppies that cry need crating more often! If your puppy whines in the crate, you need to crate him more often not less, and for shorter periods. Check out our in-depth article on coping with a crying puppy for more information Just make sure that each time he is crated is very, very brief to begin with. That way he will learn that being crated is not a big deal Warning: if you open the crate door whilst your puppy is howling, he will howl longer and harder next time! Build up slowly to a minute, then two minutes, then three, five, seven, ten, fifteen minutes and so on. How long can a puppy be left in a crate People often ask how long a puppy can be left alone in his crate. For puppies three to six months old I think two hours is a maximum, and for puppies under three months, one hour. If you need to leave your puppy for longer than this, then you need to consider a puppy proof room or pen where water and puppy pads are always available, or even a weatherproof outdoor kennel and run. This involves putting puppy pads down in a large puppy pen or puppy proofed room so that your puppy always has access to a toilet area. Stage 3 Training your puppy to go into his crate on command! As your puppy grows bigger, picking him up and putting him in his crate becomes more of a physical event! Provided you are not leaving your puppy alone for too long, he should be happy to go willingly into his crate. This can be achieved through training. This will probably take a couple of weeks. Maybe more if your puppy really does not like his crate at the moment. Have several training sessions each day — at least three. And do 20 or 30 repetitions of the following exercise in each session. This will take you about five minutes. If you are have never used one before, check out this article before you begin: Charging your clicker. Imagine a zone around the crate. It should not be so small that the dog avoids it altogether. A couple of feet in each direction is fine. The object is to get your puppy to choose to enter this zone. You are teaching him to chose to approach the crate. EXERCISE 2 entering the crate doorway In this exercise, you are going to click and treat the dog for putting a nose, or a paw through the opening into a crate. For some dogs this is too big a jump and you will need to work on a smaller crate zone first. We are moving the goalposts and the dog will be surprised when you do not reward him for entering the zone. He will quickly try something different. Have the dog in the room with you Make sure the crate door is wide open Click and treat each time the dog enters the crate zone Repeat five times Throw the treat outside the zone so that he has to re-enter to get the next reward. The next time he enters the zone, wait for him to go closer to the crate and put his nose in the opening What if he fails to do this? Repeat from step 3 until the dog repeatedly puts his nose through the crate door. Now you can stop rewarding him for simply entering the zone. It just takes longer with some dogs than others. Use his entire food ration if necessary. Remember, if you have to go out, scoop him up without a word, and place him in there bodily. Do not use the clicker or any other part of this process, or attempt to lure him in. You going out is a punishment in his mind. Behavior that is punished will diminish. When you click, he will come dashing out again for his treat. Again, we begin the exercise with something we know he can already do Have the dog in the room with you Make sure the crate door is wide open Click and treat each time the dog puts his nose through the crate doorway Repeat five times Throw each treat outside the zone so that he has to re-enter to get the next reward. The next time he puts his nose through the doorway, withold the click. Wait for him to go further in Repeat and gradually raise the criteria you are setting so that more and more of the dog must be through the doorway to get a reward. The exercise is done when the dog repeatedly goes right inside his crate. With a dog that is not crate-shy, you can often work through these three Exercises in a day or two. EXERCISE 4 spending time in the crate Have the dog in the room with you Make sure the crate door is wide open Click and treat each time the dog goes inside the crate Repeat five times The next time he enters the crate withold the click and treat for two seconds If he remains in the crate click and treat If he leaves the crate wait for him to re-enter Repeat from step five until he can wait 2 seconds in the crate and then increase to 3 seconds Work your way up to ten seconds When the dog can cope with ten seconds waiting in the crate, you are ready to close the door. To begin with this will be momentary EXERCISE 5 closing the door Have the dog in the room with you Make sure the crate door is wide open Click and treat after 10 seconds, each time the dog goes inside the crate Repeat five times The next time he enters the crate close the door and immediately open it again Wait a few seconds then If he remains in the crate click and treat If he leaves the crate wait for him to re-enter Repeat from step five until he will go into the crate, watch you open and close the door, and remain in the crate for a few more seconds after you have opened the door. We are nearly there! Use the cue you have chosen. You know the procedure now. We want him to have absorbed the association between this cue and the act of entering the crate. Now it is time to use the cue in advance of the behavior. Once the dog is repeatedly racing into the crate on your cue, we need to make sure he can distinguish this command from other commands. In this case the dog is not discriminating between different cues, but rather making assumptions about what game you are going to play. So the next step in training is to mix in another cue. If he is confused, and he may be, show him what you want, just like before. You now have a dog that actually understands the meaning of In Your Crate and happily complies with your command. It is time for him to adapt to being confined after being told to go in there. Amanita phalloides is the most commonly reported severely toxic species of mushroom in the US but other Amanita species are toxic. Symptoms include Abdominal pain, drooling, liver damage, kidney damage, vomiting diarrhea, convusions, coma, death. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and lathargy. Their high phosphorus content is said to possibly lead to bladder stones. Dogs develop a tremor of the skeletal muscles, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. Affected dogs are often unable to rise and are distressed, usually panting. Sone affected dogs have swollen limbs and show pain when the limbs are manipulated. Can also result in nutritional deficiences, if fed in large amounts. This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain Salmonella. More common if raw fish is fed regularly. I'll try and be brief with my story which leads to my passion for labradoodles, I was first introduced to the Labradoodle breed during my son's lengthy hospital stay in Palo Alto, California. It was LOVE at first sight!!! My 34 year old son Tim passed away Sept 17, , from complications of a double lung transplant due to his diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis in January, .Needless to say it was a nightmare. Tim has two children ages 17 and 12 that now spend countless hours with my husband, myself and our doodles! During the long periods of Tim's hospital stays, we were fortunate enough to meet a beautiful labradoodle. Generally dogs are not allowed on the hospital transplant floors, but because we are such dog lovers as well as the severity of Tim's illness we were allowed canine visits. The minute I saw him, I was hooked head over heels in love with the breed. After Tim's passing I experienced a loneliness like never before. F1 are most likley to shed because half of it's genes come from a Lab. F1b- is a backcross 1st generation Labradoodle. Since the F1 dogs do shed and can have a wiry type coat, the poodle is bred back to the F1 Labradoodle to correct the coat type. F2- is a 2nd generation Labradoodle. F1 x F1 just bred one more generation. These puppies also shed just like the F1. The F2 generation is the most varied generation and pups will have a variety of looks and coat types. Multigenerational Labradoodles or Multi-gen - When a Labradoodle is 3 or more generations into the breed they are considered Multigeneration Labradoodles. Almost all are non-shedding and are great for families with allergies. As the breed continued to develop other breeders in Australia such as Tegan Park and Rutland Manor began to infuse breeds into the Australian Labradoodle to improve upon consistency in health, temperament, structure and coat type. A Multigenerational Multigen Australian Labradoodle is the result of breeding Australian Labradoodles to other Australian Labradoodles over many generations. This allows breeders to selectively breed for temperament, coat, intelligence, aesthetics and quality without having to bring in other traits from any of the original foundational breeds. Australian Labradoodles can be standard, medium or miniature in size. All colors of the poodle can be found in the Australian Labradoodle. Coat types run from wavy-straight to a spiraling curl. Coat textures include wool, soft wool, silky fleece or a combination of the three. Australian Labradoodle History The Australian Labradoodle was originally created in Australia with the intent of creating a dog that was allergy-friendly with the temperament of a service dog. This was later expanded to include the Irish Water Spaniel and the Curly Coat Retriever, and these lines can still be found in some of today's Australian Labradoodles, but the standard is now just the three original breeds. We've listed the standards that have been set to date as a good guideline of what to expect. The standards listed here are excerpts from those found on the Australian Labradoodle Club of America and the Australian Labradoodle Association of America websites. Size Size is measured to the top of the shoulder blades withers while standing squarely on a level surface. Weight range tends to be 50 to 65 pounds. Weight range tends to be 30 to 40 pounds. Weight range tends to be 16 to 25 pounds. Sensitive to emotional needs or state of individuals and their "knowing" is what makes the Australian Multigenerational Labradoodles proven therapy and service dogs. Patterns Solid: Color is solid and preferably even with no white markings. A small white flash no larger than 2. Even colors are preferred, but natural coloration of the coat is not considered a fault. Solid with white markings: Color is solid with small white spots or patches typically seen on the chest, toes, or tip of the tail. Abstract: Any solid color with the second color being white. Must be less than fifty percent white. No set pattern is required but symmetrical markings on the head are preferred. Freckling of the solid color in the white of the coat is acceptable but not encouraged. Phantom: The body color must be solid, with defined markings of a second color as follows: above each eye, on the sides of the muzzle, on the cheek, on the underside of the ears, on the throat to fore chest, or in a chin and fore chest pattern, with minimum second coloring on the feet preferably up the legs and below the tail. Second color in the inside of the leg and flank is acceptable as well and should not be penalized. Markings are preferred to be clear and defined. Face markings of the second color with the entire face colored is acceptable though not preferred if the other required body markings are present. Any of the solid colors in combination is acceptable. Sable: Black-tipped hairs on any solid color - preferably even, but an uneven ticking pattern will not be penalized. Multi: Multiple colors or patterns, as in a phantom with large white abstract markings, or a parti pattern with sable ticking, etc. Coat Types Coat types are also still very sporadic with many dogs showing a combination of multiple types. As the genetic values stabilize, we hope the "Ideal" coats are as follows: Fleece: Length is usually around 5 inches long. The Fleece coat texture should be light and silky quite similar to that of an Angora goat. Fleece coats rarely if ever shed. The less curly, the more chance of slight shedding. The fleece coat has been found to be allergy friendly. Wool: Coats are denser to the feel like a sheep's wool. The "Ideal" wool coat should "hang" in loose hollow spirals. The Australian Labradoodle has a single coat. It is extremely rare for a wool coat to shed, and is the preferred coat type for families with severe allergies. To keep the wool coat long and flowing will require more maintenance. The wool coat looks beautiful cut shorter and is very easy to maintain. Grooming and a trim or clip three or four times a year is all that is required to keep the short wool coat looking great. Average Lifespan The average lifespan of an Australian Labradoodle is between years. There are different classifications of Labradoodles based on how many generations they have been bred. The multiple generations of breeding, or multigens, should produce the finest coats, qualities, and appearance. While the breed is in a stage of continued development, we only breed multigenerational Australian Labradoodles because of the consistent quality of their puppies. This specific lineage is a mix of several purebred breeds including the Labrador Retriever, the Poodle, and the English or American Cocker Spaniel. The Australian Labradoodle may be the pedigree accepted by the American Kennel Club if achieving purebred status were to become a priority. A vision impaired woman with a husband who was allergic to dogs had contacted Wally, to see if he could fulfill her request for a service dog. After numerous breedings between Poodles and Labrador Retrievers, Wally produced a puppy with an allergy friendly coat. This litter was the official beginning of the Labradoodle breed. The general public became interested in these smart and easy to train dogs and their non-shedding, allergy friendly coats have played a huge part in their current success and popularity. The Australian Labradoodle breed was further developed with the infusion of other breeds into the line such as the American and English Cocker Spaniel to add other desirable traits. Low to no-shedding and allergy-friendly. Measure from the floor up to the mark to see how tall your dog is. You can also measure up the wall and make a mark to see how big your future puppy might be. There should be no coarse hair or a second undercoat. It can have a straight wavy look or a soft spiraling curl look. It is an easy to manage textured coat. Ridgeline Australian Labradoodle puppies have wavy fleece coats. It should have the appearance of looser spiraling wool which opens up easily to the skin. It should not appear thick and dense or tightly curled. The Many Colors of Labradoodles: One of the many things I like about Labradoodles is the wide variety within the breed. There are solid colors, and patterns such as parti, phantom, abstract, sable, brindle and multi. There are slight variations in every color and new colors being identified. And just to keep us guessing, puppies might fade or darken as they mature. By matching two completely different breeds, it is assumed the healthy traits will be dominant, and because there are more trait options, the genetic make up of the dog is better. Beware of buying a puppy from a pet store and other places who may acquire dogs from puppy mills. A multigen Labradoodle is usually at least three generations removed from their closest purebred Labrador or Poodle ancestor. When breeders talk about multigen Labradoodles, they might also use confusing terms like 1st generation Labradoodle, and F2b Labradoodle. But once you understand the simple rules of labelling doodle generations, they are a useful source of information! What Is A Multigenerational Labradoodle? Breeders usually use the term multigenerational Labradoodle or multigen Labradoodle to describe an F3 Labradoodle or beyond. Or in other words, a puppy whose closest purebred ancestor is a great grandparent or further. An F1 Labradoodle puppy can also also be described as a 1st generation Labradoodle. F2 Labradoodles have two F1 Labradoodle parents. Their closest purebred ancestors are their grandparents, and they are two generations removed from them. Therefore, an F2 Labradoodle is also sometimes called a 2nd generation Labradoodle. F1b Labradoodles have one F1 Labradoodle parent, and the other parent is either a pedigree Labrador or pedigree Poodle. More usually it is a Poodle, to increase the odds of each F1b puppy having a non-shedding coat. Back crossing can be performed on later generations too. An F3 Labradoodle is three generations removed from their closest purebred ancestor. Or in other words, their closest pedigree Labrador or Poodle relative is a great-grandparent. Which is why most breeders switch to describing litters as multigenerational instead! Well, the reason is all to do with fixing desirable genetic traits in the next litter. And for many breeders, an important example of this is coat type. Does a multigen Labrdoodle shed? Labradors have heavy shedding coats, whilst Poodle coats shed very little. F1 Labradoodles can inherit either coat type, but creating multigen litters from proven non-shedding Labradoodle lines increases the odds of puppies with non-shedding coats. Multigen Labradoodle temperament Multigen Labradoodles can also be more reliable in other respects. But using the friendliest F1 Labradoodles to create an F2 generation, and using the friendliest individuals from that generation to create an F3 generation, increases the odds of multigen Labradoodles also being exceptionally friendly. What About Multigenerational Mini Labradoodles? The first Labradoodles were a Labrador and Standard Poodle mix. They varied in size from 40 to 80 pounds. Since then, interest in Labradoodles with a Miniature Poodle parent has also increased. Miniature Poodles weigh just 10 to 15 pounds, which means the potential range of adult sizes in a litter of F1 Mini Labradoodle puppies is wide. Creating a litter of F1b Mini Labradoodle puppies with one Mini Labradoodle parent and one Mini Poodle parent increases the likelihood of small, non-shedding puppies. And producing multigenerational Mini Labradoodles after that will further decrease the likelihood of puppies over a certain size in each litter. Labradors and Poodles are both prone to some genetic health problems, and in particular hereditary orthopedic diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia. All Labradors and Poodles used for breeding should first be tested and cleared for: hip dysplasia eye disease and the faulty gene that causes exercise induced collapse. So, always ask your breeder for proof of the results of these tests. What is it about each of them that they were so keen to capture in another generation? These questions are particularly important for multigen Labradoodles because in a sense, there is no right or wrong answer. Whilst another person might be seeking an energetic dog they can go running with or train as a gundog. The breeder is likely to have picked parents who match their idea of the best Labradoodle temperament. You need to find out if your idea of perfection is the same! Types of Labradoodles There are lots of ways of categorizing Labradoodles, but a really interesting one that is relevant here is designer Labradoodles vs Australian Labradoodles. Multigen Labradoodles also fall into this category, albeit somewhere on the fringes of it. Australian Labradoodles, on the other hand, are more than just an Australian Labrador Poodle cross. Australian Labradoodle is the breed name adopted by Labradoodle enthusiasts who are trying to get the Labradoodle recognized as a new pedigree dog in its own right. To achieve this, they need to breed true. That is, each new generation of puppies should come from the previous generation of Australian Labradoodles, with no more outcrossing to purebred Labradors and Poodles. And all the puppies should match the same physical profile and behave in a reliably similar way.
