I will talk about the good — and the bad — of owning a Berniedoodle, and will help you know exactly what you need to do to prepare adding a fur ball to your family. This post has been updated as of September .I know what you are thinking. What the heck is a Berniedoodle exactly? Bernedoodles are a Bernes Mountain Dog Poodle mix. Bernedoodles are not a purebred dog breed, but rather a mix breed of 2 purebred dogs. Bernedoodles have many perks of both breeds which make them enticing to so many including us to own. Berniedoodles boast non shedding hair, a loving temperament and the distinct coloring of a Bernese Mountain Dog all mixed into one! Bernedoodle Temperament I think most people know they are looking at a doodle for some of the perks that poodles offer. Shedding, for example is one such perk. But one thing you are probably curious about is the temperament of a Bernedoodle. Bernedoodles typically get much of the good from both breeds when it comes to their temperament. They tend to be affectionate and playful, yet highly intelligent and hard working, if trained correctly. All in all, Bernedoodles are wonderful family dogs who are great with children, and love to be around their owners. They are an incredibly loyal breed as well. We tend to say that Penny thinks she is a lapdog, although is not the size of one! She is roughly 45 lbs, which is very average for a full grown female Bernedoodle. Below is a good gauge of size for a Berniedoodle based on the size you get and the gender. Keep in mind that you can ask a breeder more about the anticipated size based on past litters or the size of the parents. Bernedoodles come in 4 different sizes: Tiny, Miniature, Medium and Standard. This is based on the size of the poodle that is the parent. For all size ranges the males tend to be larger. This means that as a puppy she had three color markings that are seen on a Bernese Mountain Dog. She is fluffy, with a wavy coat. She has the biggest paws I have ever seen, and has quickly learned to rule our house! Penny is our first doodle. We knew we wanted a non shedding dog, and we will never go back after how much we love her! She is such a good dog even for her puppy age, and even with her down sides. Yes, they do exist! She has been a wonderful addition to our family. Of course everyone wants to know what type of dog is Penny? Once they find out she is a Bernedoodle, it generally leads to even more questions regarding her breed. Some of those questions are the same questions I personally wondered about when we were looking at getting a Bernedoodle puppy. What Makes A Bernedoodle Special? Bernedoodles are a designer breed. With several designer breeds becoming increasingly popular over the past decades, Poodle mixes are hight on that list. Poodle mixes are loved for their size, temperament, non-shedding abilities. Of course each mixed breed and dog is different, Penny boasts all of these qualities. People are willing to pay top dollar for doodles in general, and Bernedoodle puppies are no different. Most breeders charge a higher amount per color marking. In other words, a single color Bernedoodle puppy is less expensive than a tri-color Bernedoodle. Bernedoodle puppies are one of the most expensive of the doodle breeds due to the highly coveted color markings. Tri-color coated Bernedoodles are the most coveted and typically the most expensive. You need to be cautious and do your homework before you pick out a breeder. The high cost of a Bernedoodle puppy can lead people open to schemes, which is why it is crucial you find a reputable breeder. If the breeder has a list of references, this is even better. You should be able to talk to other families who have bought from the breeder before to ask questions. Tip 3: Meet The Parents If possible always try to meet the parents and visit the breeder in person. This way you can see the conditions of where the pets are living and how they are being treated. This will also give you time to ask plenty of questions. A common health problem known as hip dysplasia is a condition that is typically seen in Bernedoodles. I searched both online and Instagram. The wait times tend to be long, so you may have to get on a waitlist well before you are ready to bring a puppy home. We decided that the long wait was more painful than the long drive and we wanted a breeder we felt good with, so we knew we would get a healthy puppy. Training Bernedoodle Puppies Can I be honest? Bernedoodles are intelligent dogs. Bringing her home actually reminded me of bringing home a baby. Super sleepy and well behaved for a minute, then they turn into the needy baby. That meant teaching her to sleep in her kennel at night, and go in her kennel when we are gone. I was convinced we would be up all night from the start, but she slept through the night well from day one! When we first began, we opted to keep her crate farther away from the bedrooms so everyone would sleep well. She let us know when she was awake and did bark when she was first put to bed. We also opted to keep a sound machine in the room for white noise. This helped her not hear us in the even we had to get up with any kids. Picking The Right Crate Penny uses this crate, and has since being a puppy. As a new puppy we were able to put the divider in to make it feel smaller and more cozy. Now, she sleeps in it without the divider. When she was small we put towels down for her to sleep on so they were easy to clean. She treats towels like a baby blanket and drags it out to lay on, so we ended up giving her a blanket at about 7 months old. Buy the dog crate we love for Penny here! Now, she sleeps in our bed or her dog bed. Her dog bed is washable and is the perfect blend of cozy and stylish. Buy her dog bed here — I love how this looks, but it also washes well in the machine. Potty Training Bernedoodle Puppies Because puppies typically do a great job at not having accidents in their crate, that is a good step in getting them house broken. Then after another week or so, she became completely house broken. We were VERY careful not to allow her to be in any room unattended. When puppies are unattended, you can expect accidents. Following her cues was very helpful in establishing a schedule. Just like potty training a toddler, puppies too give off body signals to alert you that they need to go. Once we realized those cues and timing, potty training was set. Lastly, in the event of an accident, Penny is placed in her kennel instead of taking her outside once we knew she knew it was wrong. We attempted a 2 week, all day, training session. No Dogs On The Furniture? However, I lost that fight, fast. She loves to be on furniture and sometimes even tries to be on my lap. A Teething Bernedoodle Puppy A teething puppy can be rough. Puppies tend to nip and chew on anything they can sink their teeth into- even if that means a finger or two. The kids quickly learned not to play near her mouth. We keep these bully sticks on hand. Honestly, it is an investment because she goes through them really fast. It has been the best thing for keeping her from chewing on anything in our home or from nipping, which will lessen with time. How To Curb Jumping? Jumping has been our hardest behavior to curb for Penny. She is a big dog and is very strong. Jumping has been our biggest hurdle to work through and it is a continual work in progress. I think for most bigger dogs, this is a difficult behavior to address. Bernedoodles are especially prone to jumping due to their affectionate nature. They want to jump for love just to be in your space. These photos were at roughly 6 months old and in dire need of a grooming Barking Problems I am often asked if Penny barks a lot. From time to time, she will bark in her kennel for 10 seconds to remind us she wants out, but by no means is barking in excess. Bernedoodle Grooming Bernedoodles are considered a hypoallergenic breed of dog that does not shed. That said, they do shed SOME just like you do as a human. Penny by no means sheds on our clothes or our furniture. We from time to time do find a little fluff of hair against the baseboards, but for the most part have noticed no major shedding. Our oldest son is also allergic to dogs, and has done very well with Penny. Shedding dogs give him hives and Penny has not done that for Jack. Even with minimal shedding, Bernedoodles do have to be groomed. We take Penny to be groomed where we have them do the whole nine yards, including cutting her hair. Between the grooming sessions we also do a few things to take care of her at home. However, she still requires regular grooming appointments and brushing at home. The more often you brush your Bernedoodle, the more used to it they will get so they handle it better. Toy for cleaning teeth — We try to brush Pennys teeth, but also have opted to use this toy with toothpaste. Greenies Bones — We also give Penny Greenies bones every few days which helps keep her breath fresh and her teeth clean. Shampoo — Although we get Penny groomed it is great to bathe your Bernedoodle at home from time to time. Paw Cleaner — This has been one of my favorite purchases with Penny. You fill it with water and clean their paws when they come in when it is muddy. We keep it by the back door for stormy days and it has been so helpful! Bernedoodle Play and Socialization So how much attention does a Bernedoodle really need? Puppies will always need socialization and attention. Penny, however, is easy to please. Throwing a ball for her outside is a great way to entertain her. As with most big dog breeds one of the best ways to handle energy levels is to take them on a daily walk. Long walks take time for them to be ready for in terms of obedience, but overall we have found that slowly walking more has been the best way for her. She is much more well behaved when slightly worn out. Of course, if you need assistance in getting energy out, a puppy daycare is a great option for socialization and to fill those exercise needs. Penny loves other dogs and enjoys playing. We have 4 little ones at home and their safety is our biggest concern. That said we also have taught them to respect Penny in return. We allow Penny to eat on her own and although sometimes the kids do interrupt, we try to encourage them to leave her be. She is incredibly loving with the kids. While she can be somewhat rambunctious, overall, she is very sweet and gentle with our crew. Bernedoodles lean to the side of wild and goofy with their highly affectionate personality. You can expect that they will be very playful with the kids and a great addition to your family. It is important to remember that not all Bernedoodles are the same and some may enjoy more or less exercise to keep them happy and healthy! They are very social and do best if they are not left alone for extended periods of time. The life expectancy of an Bernedoodle is between years. This seems like quite a large range right? Remember that in general, smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger dogs. It is important to keep in mind that many factors can affect their life expectancy such as diet, exercise, injury, genetics, etc. Since they were bred to be a working breed they can also be somewhat stubborn. Poodles on the other hand are non-shedding and typically have a longer lifespan. They are an extremely smart breed that is eager to please and often very easy to train. Did you know that Poodles were originally used as hunting dogs? The combination of these two breeds creates a smart, mellow dog that has a longer lifespan and is typically very low to non-shedding! There are several different generations of Bernedoodles. Most reputable Bernedoodle breeders will only cross a standard or moyen Poodle with a Bernese. Crossing a toy or mini Poodle with a Bernese often results in Bernedoodle puppies with short legs and a longer body like a Corgi. Most F1 Bernedoodles will be low shedding while others may shed moderately or not at all. F1b Bernedoodles tend to be a great choice for those with allergies because they have a higher percentage of Poodle. Most tend to shed very little or not at all. Yes and no. F2 Bernedoodle coats can be unpredictable due to the Bernese being IC improper coat affected. This means that they can produce puppies that do not shed at all, but they can also produce puppies that will be low or high shedders. Some F2 Bernedoodles will be furnished have doodle coats while others will be unfurnished no facial beard or doodle coat. Their percentages can be a mixture leaning towards either parent breed. When reputable breeders carefully plan and study their lines, multigens tend to be the most predictable generation when it comes to temperament, coat type, shedding factor, etc. Our multigen Bernedoodles typically are very low to non-shedding. While there are no guarantees, even if you have serious allergies to dander, you should do well with a curly-coated bernedoodle. Breeders can often tell by the time a dog is a few weeks old what type of coat it will have, and can help match you to the best coat type for your situation. If you are allergic to dog saliva, and your skin breaks out in hives when licked by a dog, you will most likely be allergic to all bernedoodles regardless of coat type. Since there are no absolute guarantees with coat type, responsible breeders will give you some time to see if you are allergic to your puppy and will allow you to return the pup if it is not working out. Since most bernedoodles shed little, if at all, they need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting, and must be clipped every few months. Different Generations F1 is a first generation cross in which the pup is 50 percent Bernese mountain dog and 50 percent poodle. The F1 cross is considered the healthiest, as the parents have the least likelihood of contributing genes for common inheritable diseases. F1b is a backcross in which a bernedoodle is bred with a poodle. The puppy is 25 percent Bernese, and 75 percent poodle. F1b puppies are the most likely to be non-shedding and allergy-friendly. Some breeders have backcrossed a bernedoodle with a Bernese, which results in a dog with more of the Bernese traits. I prefer not to breed this backcross as there is a greater likelihood of shedding. F2 is a second-generation cross in which an F1 bernedoodle is crossed with another F1 bernedoodle. If this is done for seven generations, a breeder could apply to register this dog as a purebred. The closer the generations come together, the more consistency there will be in the lines, but the genetic problems of the purebreds are more likely too reappear, and hybrid vigor diminishes. Of the hundreds of bernedoodles I have bred in the past decade, only few owners have reported a genetic health concern. Therefore, I am confident that hybrid vigor is indeed creating a healthier dog that will be with you for a long time. At this point, I can only estimate an average lifespan: I predict standard bernedoodles will live years, mini bernedoodles up to 17 years, and tiny bernedoodles up to 18 years. Description The very muscular, sturdy and powerful, yet compact frame of the American Bulldog remains higher on the leg, more agile and swifter than its English counterpart. Some individuals are reportedly able to leap six or more feet into the air. Males are characteristically stockier and heavier boned than the more refined females. The head is large with strong jaws. Agile and light on his feet, the chest is wide and moderately deep, giving the sense of athletic ability and power. The neck is muscular, tapering from the shoulders to the head and may have a slight dewlap. The head is square, large and broad with muscular cheeks relatively in proportion to the size and overall structure of the dog. There is a defined furrow between the rounded eyes, with a distinct, sharply defined, deep stop. The strong muzzle is broad and square. The preferred bite is reverse scissors, but a moderate underbite, scissors or even bite are acceptable. A variety of ear types are acceptable including cropped, rose, half-pricked and forward flap. Uncropped ears are preferred in the American Bulldog Breeders Association standard. Eyes are most often brown, but can come in any color. They sometimes have split eyes, where one eye is brown and the other eye is blue. Black eye rims are preferred on white dogs. Pink eye rims are considered a fault according to the written standard. The nose is black, red, brown or grizzle; black is the preferred color according to the standard. In black-nosed dogs, the preferred lip color is black, though some pink is permitted. The lips should be full but not too loose. The front legs are heavy-boned, strong and straight. The hindquarters should be very broad and thick with well-defined muscles. The tail is low-set, begins thick at the base, and tapers to a point. The coat is smooth and short, and comes in all shades of brindle including red brindle, varying degrees of white, red, brown, tan, fawn and piebald. Temperament The American Bulldog is loyal, reliable, brave and determined. Not a hostile dog. Alert and self-confident, this breed genuinely loves children. It is known for its acts of heroism toward its master. It has strong protective instincts, and needs a firm, confident, consistent pack leader. Well-socialize and obedience train them at an early age, to prevent them from becoming reserved with strangers. Without that strong-minded pack leader who can tell the dog what is expected of it, it may be aggressive with other dogs. They need to be around people and know their place in their pack to be truly happy. This breed tends to drool and slobber. Without enough daily mental and physical exercise they will become high strung and may become hard to handle. An American Bully can have anywhere between 4 to 8 puppies with each pregnancy. After birth, the puppies and the mother need time to rest comfortably. So, whether you are a dog breeder or a pet owner, you must look for signs that confirm the pregnancy. The nipple size may increase. The female may become more affectionate. Here is how the checkups are likely to go from here: The first step is the abdominal palpation exam. They usually perform abdominal palpation around the 28th or 30th day. They will also perform an ultrasound between the 25th and 30th days of pregnancy to check for a heartbeat. Around the same time, the vet also does a hormonal level check of your pregnant American Bully. An x-ray can detect pregnancy. After about 55 days, the vet may do an x-ray, which is the surest way of confirming pregnancy and the number of puppies in the litter. Pug Ears Overview Pugs are a very unique breed that has very interesting ears; they are one of the standout features of this amazing toy breed dog. There should be routine cleaning to keep the ears clean and free of odors. And, even so, ear infections can develop which can cause intense itching and discomfort. Pug Ear Care and Cleaning - The important steps of keeping your Pug's ear flaps, outer ear canals, and inner ear canals clean for both hygiene and prevention of infections. Pug Ear Odor - The types of smells that may stem from the ears and what these may mean. Pug Ear Infections - Signs, causes, and treatment of bacterial, yeast, and mite ear infections. It is a beautiful feature since the black ears match the black mask that is also a hallmark of this breed. Of course, these is apparent on non-black Pugs fawns, silver-fawns, and apricot-fawns since black Pugs have black fur, and thus ears, all over. Preference is given to the latter. Preference given to latter. So, as you can see, there is a general agreement that Pugs will have small black ears that are very soft to the touch, reminding one of velvet and that there are two accepted shapes rose and button with the button being preferred in conformation show rings. Types of Pug Ears While there are variations of the Pug ear and each dog will have his own unique look, one element is clear with this breed: The ear is a folded ear, meaning that it rises and then flaps over itself. The differences in Pug ears are the angle in which it folds and the distance from the ear tip to the side of the face. Let's take a look at examples of the various types of ears a Pug can have: The button ear The button ear on a Pug is one in which the ear folds forward, pointing toward the outer corner of the eye, and lying against the face. The outer ear canal is fully covered. This is the preferred ear shape in conformation shows. The rose ear The rose ear on a Pug is similar to the button ear in that it folds over, but the major difference is that the ear has a softer fold in which the ear stands out a bit and does not lie against the Pug's face. The burr on a Pug is the section of cartilage that forms a small bump on the outer ear canal and this shows with the rose ear. This ear shape is accepted, but not preferred, in the show ring. The fly ear The fly ear, also known as the rose flying ear, is considered a fault with the Pug breed. The ear just barely folds and the flaps extend far from the Pug's face. Though there is nothing wrong with a pet Pug having this type of ear set, this is a genetic trait that can be passed down and for this reason Pugs with flying ears should not be in breeding programs. However, if a Pug puppy has ears that stand out a bit rose ears these can eventually fall down to lie against the face button ears. And, if a Pug puppy has ears that really stand out far from the face flying ears , there is a chance that they may settle down to just expose the burr rose ears. This, however, is by no means a guarantee. You may notice the ears changing during the first 9 months, most obvious during the teething phase which can temporarily affect the ear set due to a connection from nerves in the jaw to muscles in the ear base. Coloring on the ears seen at a young age is also a strong indicator of what to expect once a Pug becomes an adult. However, there can be changes with this as well. So, typically, the ear set and ear color on a Pug puppy will let you know what to expect in general, yet there can be some changes during the first year. Final adult set and color is in place by the one-year mark. Ear set on a Pug, like other physical features, is genetic. Sort of cosmetic surgery, there is no method that owners can do to change the ear set on a Pug. You may have heard about taping which is a method literally using tape to hold a puppy's ears into a desired position in the hopes that they will eventually stay that way. But, this rarely produces any visibly noticeable results and can be quite time consuming and frustrating for both owner and dog. If your Pug's ears are not what you expected them to be, remember that every dog is beautiful and unique in their own way. The only time that ear set truly matters is if you plan to enter your Pug into conformation shows or a breeding program. This is done for hygiene purposes to remove dirt, debris, excess wax, and possible related odors as well as health to help prevent ear infections. Cleaning the ears involves two different aspects: Ear flaps and outer ear canal - Anything on the inner ear flaps or outer ear canal including moisture and fine particle debris can make its way deep into a Pug's inner ear canal which can eventually lead to issues including infection. So, for this, routinely use a wipe to clean the entire inner flap and outer ear canal as far as you can comfortably reach in. This is typically done once per week. If your Pug has had problems with reoccurring ear infections, the veterinarian may instruct you to do this every other day. A recommended ear wipe for Pugs is PPP Pet Aroma Care Ear Wipes ; these are small textured ear specialty wipes with both aloe vera and eucalyptus that works very well to clean the ear area and leave a nice fresh scent. Inner ear canal - Even if you work to keep your Pug's ear flaps and outer canals clean, the inner ear canals should be cleaned every so often. This will help break up thick clumps of excess ear wax, flush the ears of fine debris, and dry up any excess moisture. For regular maintenance, this is generally done every 6 weeks. If a Pug has a history of ear infections, the veterinarian may instruct you to do this as often as once per week. Instructions for cleaning a Pug's ear canals are as so: Clean one ear at a time Use one hand to lift the ear flap. Use your other hand to place several drops of ear solution into the ear canal for exact number of drops, follow the instructions on the label Massage the base of the ear by placing your thumb on one side of your Pug's ear and your forefinger on the other side. Press your fingers toward each other and slowly move them around. You may hear swashing sounds as you move the solution around. Massage for 2 to 3 minutes. Use a piece of sterile gauze, ear wipes, or cotton balls to thoroughly clear off anything that has come up and onto the outer ear canal. Tip: Do not be surprised at what you may see as you clean up the gunk that comes out. The color of the matter can range from yellow to dark brown and may contain any number of colored specks including green and black. A recommended ear cleanser for Pugs is Virbac Epi-Otic Advanced Ear Cleaner which is a non-alcohol formula no stinging that works exceptionally well to break up wax, lift up debris, and dry any inner moisture. Pug Ear Odor A mild odor coming from the ears may simply be a sign that it's time to clear out the ear canals of accumulated ear wax and other matter that are clogging the canals. This can be done using the method as previously described under ' Pug Ear Care and Cleaning '. However, a very strong pungent odor from the ears is a sign of an ear infection. This may be a musty, yeasty, or moldy smell. In many cases this will require a medicated ear treatment and this is what will be covered next. Pug Ear Infections Ear infections are very common with dogs; in fact, this is one of the top reasons for sick visits to the veterinarian. There are several types of ear infections that can develop including yeast, bacterial, and mites. Causes: There are several possible causes of ear infections with Pugs including chronically dirty ears and moisture in the ears. Yeast infections may also occur due to immune system response, often seen alongside different types of allergies. Ear mites are very contagious and can be transferred from one dog to another when in close quarters, typically seen in shelters, doggie day cares, and other facilities. Symptoms: Signs of an ear infection include one or more of the following: Itchiness a dog may scratch at the ears or rub his head into different surfaces Head shaking Red, irritated outer ear canal Discharge Black or red crumbly specks see with ear mites Treatment: If you are not sure if your Pug has an ear infection, are not sure of the exact type, if home remedy methods have not produced results, or if you do not feel confident treating an ear infection from home, it is recommended to bring your puppy or dog to the veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment. The ears will be examined and a sample from the inner ear canal may be taken to determine the exact type of infection. Both topical treatments and oral medications may be given depending on whether the problem is a bacterial, yeast, or mite infection. This said, some acute ear infections can be treated at home. A medicated ear solution like Pet King Brands Zymox Otic Ear Treatment w Hydrocortisone contains a broad spectrum enzymatic solution that kills several of the most common strains of bacteria seen with canine ear infections including streptococcus, and staphylococcus and common strains of yeast including malassezia pachydermatitis, candida albicans, and candida albicans. Is it ethical to tape a dog's ears? Functions of a dog's ears Although dogs use vocalizations for intraspecies communication, they most effectively communicate with others through body language. This complex system of signs and signals use almost every part of the dog's body including facial gestures, tail movement and, important to the topic in discussion, ear positions. Additionally, a dog has a highly developed hearing ability, something which is assisted by ear movement. By turning their ear pinnae the outer ear in the right direction, they can better receive sound vibrations into their ear canal. Ear pinnae also provide practical protection for the inner ear, including deterring foreign bodies from entering. This can also be done with regular cleaning of the dog's ears. Since the ears are so important for dogs, depriving them of their natural mobility can lead to significant problems. These include poor communication with both humans and other dogs. Ear cropping and tail docking is a common practice among certain dog breeds. Not only has this procedure been shown to have little to no benefit to the welfare of the dog, something which has even led to the banning of this practice [1]. It has also been shown that dogs with cropped ears are often perceived as being dangerous or unpleasant, regardless of their actual nature [2]. As we stated above, a dog's breed will generally determine whether their ears are erect or floppy. There are some instances when a dog will have one floppy ear , but this is almost always due to a medical issue such as otohematoma. Also, it will take some time for a puppy's ears to become erect. Some guardians prefer their dog's ears to stand erect, others prefer them to lay down. In the latter case, some may even ask how to make a dog's ears floppy. Taping down a dog's ears is one of the most common ways to do the latter and we explain why it is a practice best avoided. Why is taping a dog's ears performed? There are claims that shorter or less erect ears can help prevent dogs injuries if they get in fights. Working dogs with erect ears often have them taped down or cropped because it is said it reduces injury when they are hunting or if they come across a wild predator. It is also claimed that it reduces injuries when traveling through thickets or other wooden areas. While many guardians may do it in good faith, the main reason for taping a dog's ears seems to be an aesthetic one. Some animal guardians prefer a dog's ears to stand up erect, others want to make a dog's ears floppy or lay down. Either gives the dog a certain look which many simply find appealing. This can be done with taping: Taping a dog's ears down: this is usually performed by pulling the erect ears down and taping them as far down under their chin as they go. Some may even tape the ears together under the chin. The type of tape needs to be strong enough to hold, something which can be difficult due to boisterousness of young dogs. Taping a dog's ears up: tape can also be used to tape a dog's ears up, something often seen in dogs such as German Shepherds. This is usually performed by wrapping tape around the ears until the tape cause a hard support and they become erect over time. For the dog, it is very unlikely they would want to have their ears taped for an aesthetic reason. It is similarly unlikely they would elect to have the procedure performed for any reason. Since there is no provable medical benefit for a dog to have their ears taped down, it is hard to see the practice being a good idea. Other ways to keep a dog's ears down Many people do not think twice about making a dog's ears stand on up or taping them down flat. Since the culture behind this practice is so strong, many people think of various ways to keep them flat. These include: Taping a dog's ears We have explained the reasons for doing this above, but it can also be practically very difficult to do. Some people will simply use duct tape or other adhesive tape to keep the dog's ears laying flat. Others will buy specialized tape, often provided over the internet. Since the dog moves about a lot, people often need to use a lot of tape to keep it in place. When ripped from the dog's coat, it is likely to take some hair with it also. Puppy ear glue Most ear glue for dogs is used on puppies since it is easier to keep them down if performed during initial development. It is applied by shaving the areas where the top of the ears will be glued to. Ear glue is added to the tip of the ear with a swab and the ear is held down tightly for a number of seconds until the glue dries. Eventually, the hair will grow back and the glue will fall out. Bandages Similar to how tape can be wrapped around the ear to keep them erect or adhered under the skin to keep them down, some guardians wrap the ears in bandages. The bandages are wrapped around the dog's head and neck and then secured tightly so there is little movement. The ears then stay flat as they grow. Surgery Veterinarians will often use surgery to help the dog with certain ear problems. If they have a hematoma, infection or traumatic injury, they can modify the ears to bring them back to health. The dog requires anesthesia and there is a chance of risk. Most veterinarians will not carry out this surgery for purely cosmetic reasons, but some do. When we look at the evidence, there is little to support the idea of ethically taping a dog's ears. Unless the dog has a pre-existing medical problem, letting their ears develop naturally will benefit the dog greatly. It will allow them to communicate properly with others. With breeds such as Pit Bull type dogs, ear cropping prevents dogs and people to see a vital signal they might be aggressive. Taping a dog's ears can do the same. The burr on a Pug is the section of cartilage that forms a small bump on the outer ear canal and this shows with the rose ear. This ear shape is accepted, but not preferred, in the show ring. The fly ear The fly ear, also known as the rose flying ear, is considered a fault with the Pug breed. The ear just barely folds and the flaps extend far from the Pug's face. Though there is nothing wrong with a pet Pug having this type of ear set, this is a genetic trait that can be passed down and for this reason Pugs with flying ears should not be in breeding programs. However, if a Pug puppy has ears that stand out a bit rose ears these can eventually fall down to lie against the face button ears. And, if a Pug puppy has ears that really stand out far from the face flying ears , there is a chance that they may settle down to just expose the burr rose ears. This, however, is by no means a guarantee. You may notice the ears changing during the first 9 months, most obvious during the teething phase which can temporarily affect the ear set due to a connection from nerves in the jaw to muscles in the ear base. Coloring on the ears seen at a young age is also a strong indicator of what to expect once a Pug becomes an adult. However, there can be changes with this as well. So, typically, the ear set and ear color on a Pug puppy will let you know what to expect in general, yet there can be some changes during the first year. Final adult set and color is in place by the one-year mark. Ear set on a Pug, like other physical features, is genetic. Sort of cosmetic surgery, there is no method that owners can do to change the ear set on a Pug. You may have heard about taping which is a method literally using tape to hold a puppy's ears into a desired position in the hopes that they will eventually stay that way. But, this rarely produces any visibly noticeable results and can be quite time consuming and frustrating for both owner and dog. If your Pug's ears are not what you expected them to be, remember that every dog is beautiful and unique in their own way. The only time that ear set truly matters is if you plan to enter your Pug into conformation shows or a breeding program. This is done for hygiene purposes to remove dirt, debris, excess wax, and possible related odors as well as health to help prevent ear infections. Cleaning the ears involves two different aspects: Ear flaps and outer ear canal - Anything on the inner ear flaps or outer ear canal including moisture and fine particle debris can make its way deep into a Pug's inner ear canal which can eventually lead to issues including infection. So, for this, routinely use a wipe to clean the entire inner flap and outer ear canal as far as you can comfortably reach in. This is typically done once per week. If your Pug has had problems with reoccurring ear infections, the veterinarian may instruct you to do this every other day. If a Pug has a history of ear infections, the veterinarian may instruct you to do this as often as once per week. Instructions for cleaning a Pug's ear canals are as so: Clean one ear at a time Use one hand to lift the ear flap. Use your other hand to place several drops of ear solution into the ear canal for exact number of drops, follow the instructions on the label Massage the base of the ear by placing your thumb on one side of your Pug's ear and your forefinger on the other side. Press your fingers toward each other and slowly move them around. You may hear swashing sounds as you move the solution around. Massage for 2 to 3 minutes. Use a piece of sterile gauze, ear wipes, or cotton balls to thoroughly clear off anything that has come up and onto the outer ear canal. Tip: Do not be surprised at what you may see as you clean up the gunk that comes out. The color of the matter can range from yellow to dark brown and may contain any number of colored specks including green and black.
