Bubba is already sold as one of our Custom Trained Retrievers, so it is our responsibility to raise and train her until she has progressed to the level of training the owner has requested. In this case, Bubba will be with us for almost a year and a half. Bubba at 12 weeks old Training and socialization for week-old Labrador puppy — week five home Bubba should have been named Spunky because she is a handful. She runs around our home with her head and tail high, like she is all that. She pulls our shoes out of the organizer, chews on closet doors and digs and splashes in her water dish. So is the life of a 3-month-old Lab puppy. Patience is required to raise young lab pups. They will give you a run for the money. Even the well-behaved ones. No one escapes the terror of the 3-month-old Lab. So, how can you survive this time. Firm and well-defined boundaries that are enforced endlessly. Now is not the time to give up on training your puppy. It is the time to buckle down and show your puppy that there are rules and boundaries, and they must be obeyed. You puppy can and will learn the rules if you are firm and consistent in your corrections. Whatever you do, do not allow the puppy to do whatever it wants with no corrections. That is not being a good puppy mama or dad and it is really not fair to the dog, because training will require much more pressure and correction when the dog is bigger and stronger. Here are the things we worked on this week for training of Bubba. Crate training Bubba is now completely at home in her crate. She remains in her crate a full 4-hours at a time without accidents, is quiet while in there and walks into her crate on a KENNEL command from feet in front of the crate. Bubba will come to me when called, even when she knows that she is going into the crate. While there are still some consistency issues to work on, Bubba is well crate trained at this point. Looking for more information on crate training? Housebreaking Housebreaking is such a difficult job. You will have periods when the puppy is doing so well that you will think you are done. And then, when you least expect it, your puppy will have an accident right in front of you. Bubba has been good at housebreaking. She has had less than a half-dozen accidents in the house and all of them pee accidents. She has never pooped in the house. So, we thought she was pretty much house broke. Then suddenly, she just up and peed right on the dog bed. Housebreaking is always an ongoing process, and we know that over time the accidents will become less and less. Looking for more information on housebreaking? Obedience training your week-old puppy With any dog training, obedience is key! She will SIT on command about 90 percent of the time. The only time we really have issues is when there is a lot of distractions. That is normal for a puppy of her age, but that does not mean that we just allow her to be disobedient when there are distractions. Rather, we look for distractions and then train through them. This is very important because you do not want your dog to just be obedient when everything is calm. You want, even need, your puppy to be obedient when the everyday distractions happen. HERE command As I have already stated, twelve-week-old puppies are cute, but they can also be little terrors. This is the age when they start to get very independent. With that independence comes the desire to run away from you, run around you, play keep-a-way and just generally terrorize your life. We get lots of calls from owners of puppies this age. They all want to know if we can take their dog now for training instead of at the usual months of age that we usually require for hunting dog training. This is very hard, even for professional trainers. But that is almost always a mistake since Bubba will decide to make a game out of not coming to us. Getting your puppy to come to you There are some techniques to help with this matter. Sometimes this is a good time to start treat-training your dog on HERE. This is a short-term fix that we will not continue for long, but it can sometimes help to get us through the next month or two. Labs are almost always driven by food, so it can help you get a better response to the HERE command. You can also have the dog drag a long check cord. The check cord gives you something to grab onto if the dog tries to make a game of coming to you, but you must be careful since the lead can get caught on something and injure your dog. Remember that each time you say HERE, you need to pull your puppy towards you. You need to associate the HERE command with coming towards you. You need your puppy to understand that coming to you is a good thing. That is why treats can help with this. If every time your puppy comes to you, you put her away or take something away from her, soon your puppy will not want to come to you. You must work hard to make coming to you a good experience for your puppy. Last week we introduced Bubba to water and got her swimming. Since then, she has been swimming a couple more times and she is very comfortable retrieving in the water. We also introduced her to decoys on land. Introduction to live birds This week we introduced Bubba to a live bird. We do this using a pigeon with the flight feathers pulled out. The pigeon can walk around and flap its wings, but it cannot fly. We ultimately would love to see the puppy chase down the bird, grab it in their mouth and bring it to us or at least prance around with it a bit. For some dogs, this can take a bit of encouragement the first time. But generally, once the puppy grabs hold of the bird, we see their whole demeanor change. This was the case for Bubba. Once Bubba picked up the pigeon, she pranced around the yard with her tail high and a spring in her step. She was so excited and proud of herself. This is a great response. Introduction to gun fire As I stated in last weeks post, we do not want to rush the introduction to gunfire. We have never had a dog we have raised and trained become gun shy and that is because we introduce gunfire is a very slow and painfully methodical way. The first step is that the dog or puppy is in a box on our dog trailer. While in this box, our other dogs are getting marks in the field. The gunners for these marks are anywhere from yards away from the dog trailer and they are using primers or starter pistols. The puppy is hearing these shots, but they are a long way away and are muted by being in the dog trailer. Our puppies hear these shots for weeks, or months before they ever hear anything closer. This is our first introduction to gun fire. Bubba was exposed to this last week and will be every week for a while before we move anything closer to her. Learn more about introducing your dog to gunfire. Continuation of assistant marks Bubba will continue to get assistant marks most days from now until she is done her training. The marks will continue to increase in distance and complexity but all our marking scenarios for our afternoon sessions involved gunners out in the field throwing marks for Bubba. Final thoughts on training for your week-old Labrador puppy You are really in the thick of it if your puppy is around the week mark. The next month or two will likely be the most challenging of your time raising a Labrador puppy. That will make obedience training easier and faster, but that is still a bit of a ways out. Hang in there and push through. Keep your commands and corrections firm and consistent and you will make progress with your puppy. It is important to go at a happy pace for you both. Positive reinforcement training is the right choice for your puppy because there are no negative consequences to getting something wrong. But you can still both suffer from burnout and frustration if you try to reach the later puppy training stages without totally aceing the earlier developments. Your Puppy Training Schedule This may not be exactly the same for each puppy, especially with retrieving which is more Labrador specific. However, it gives you a rough idea. Constantly changing direction. Stopping frequently for cuddles and rewards. This means I blow the recall whistle whenever the puppy runs towards me, no compulsion, and no whistle unless the recall is already underway. Socialisation: Lots almost daily of outings to different places rural and urban carried Visits to family and friends. Bite inhibition: Discourage hard biting, allow mouthing. Working with food: Learning how to take food gently without snatching or grabbing at the treat pot. I still give the puppy lots of encouragement by running away as soon as I blow the whistle. There is nothing wrong with teaching your puppy different cues and even some tricks. I recommend you still avoid long duration activities at this point as they are a common stumbling point with puppies young enough to have a short attention span. A ten second sit is ample. Great Pyrenees also known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog are huge, majestic dogs. Known for their unconditional love for family, guardian instincts against intruders, and elegant thick white coats, Pyrenees are well-known as livestock protectors as well as wonderful family dogs. Great Pyrenees typically rank as being excellent family dogs; very friendly with their family and great with kids. There are five main reasons many people consider a Pyredoodle a better fit for their family than a Purebred Pyrenees: Hypoallergenic: The Poodles' non-shedding coat is hypo-allergenic. Because the poodle coat is the dominant gene, many poodle crosses often called doodles get the non-shedding coat. This is particularly the case with thick coated dogs like the Great Pyrenees. They're the best friend of children and small animals. Pyrenees were accorded royalty status by becoming the famous guardians of French royalty for generations. The young French prince instantly fell in love with this elegant giant dog that was so loving towards him and protective. The eight year old prince brought the Pyrenees back to live with him at the Louvre. Several aristocratic French families fell in love with the prince's Great Pyrenees and bought their own. A few decades later the Great Pyrenees had transformed from a country guard dog to the official French dog of royalty. Today the breed has been popularized by it's many appearances in movies and TV shows. Because of their devoted, affectionate nature, Great Pyrenees are used as therapy and service dogs. Because of their guardian instincts to care for their own, while protecting against enemies, many Pyrenees are still used as livestock guardians throughout the world today. They are gorgeous, majestic, head-turners. As large as the Newfiedoodle and Saint Berdoodle, Pyredoodles look more majestic, regal and statuesque than most other large dog breeds, which often are described as cuddly, or teddy bear like. Many people who own Pyredoodles talk about the head-turner nature of their dog. You'll be asked by people everywhere about your huge white, thick coated, straight-standing attentive, nanny dog. Because of the independent nature of the Great Pyrenees, we typically do not recommend the Pyredoodle for a first time dog owner. Pyredoodles have great appeal to families who were considering a Sheepadoodle. Old English Sheepdogs are originally herding dogs, similar to the livestock protection nature of the Pyredoodle. Pyredoodles tend to be a little larger than Sheepadoodles, calmer than Sheepadoodles, much less nippy as puppies, and much less likely to try to "herd" children. Many families that initially contact Crockett Doodles interested in a Sheepadoodle end up wanting a Pyredoodle instead after further research. Our dogs and goats are loved on daily with extra special attention given to our pregnant mamas. Since we only have one litter of puppies per year, we can spend time with each puppy and give them the best start at life. We handle the puppies daily to get them used to human interactions right from the start. On day three, we start early neurological stimulation ENS. ENS consists of four short movements for each puppy that stimulate the nervous system daily. ENS is completed through day 16 and more information about it can be found here. We watch our puppies closely and when they first startle at a noise, we begin habituation exercises. They normally start hearing around two weeks and we want them to hear a new noise daily after that. Noises we ensure they hear include, but are not limited to: vacuum, hairdryer, dropped pans, kids screaming, and cows mooing. As the puppies grow, we introduce them to new experiences and people. Dogs do not generalize so they need to meet people of all ages, shapes, sizes, colors, and clothing choices. Our puppies are socialized with kids daily since we have kids so they will be very ready for human siblings! To begin the weaning process, we give the puppies goat milk from our grass fed, holistically raised goats. Their first foods include raw goat meat cuts before they are transitioned to puppy food. Their puppy food is soaked in homemade bone broth to soften it while they are still little. Some Pyredoodles do have separation anxiety, so we make sure each puppy gets individual time away from their siblings daily. While this does not guarantee the dog will not develop separation anxiety, it should help reduce the chances. Our puppies are also introduced to a crate. They are allowed to explore the crate at their leisure and learn that it is a safe place to relax or nap. Once the pups show an interest in treats, clicker training begins. All pups learn basic clicker training and are taught to sit, rather than jump up, when they want attention. Although the puppies mainly live in our detached garage turned puppy palace, we give them inside time daily. We know our puppies will eventually be family dogs, so they need to feel comfortable inside and out. They learn at a young age to poop outside their sleeping and indoor area. It takes a bit longer with pee, but they will have the basic idea of where to go potty when they go home. A doodle is less likely to shed than its purebred, non-poodle parent. Based on the history of the Poodle, most doodles do well with kids, are gentle, and tolerant. What is a Pyredoodle? The Great Pyrenees is a large dog known for their love for family, guardian instincts, and thick white coats that shed a lot. They are often utilized as livestock guardian dogs, like our mama dog, Bishop. They normally seem very calm but can jump to action if a threat is detected. The Standard Poodle is a very intelligent, athletic dog known for its versatility and desire to please. They are affectionate with family, good with children, and very playful. Normally calm and gentle, they will notify their families of any perceived threat. What type of socialization will my puppy have? We raise our puppies using Puppy Culture methods. Puppy Culture is a training program that produces confident, balanced, easy to train dogs. Puppies will be introduced to as many different sights, sounds, and experiences as possible before they go home with you. We will also start clicker training with your pup and each puppy is sent home with their own clicker to continue training. They will want further training, of course, since training is so fun! And it is a great bonding experience for everyone involved. How big do Pyredoodles get? Based on the size of Mama Bishop and Dad Jazz, our puppies are estimated to grow to pounds. When can my puppy come home? Puppies are generally weaned and ready to go to their forever homes between weeks of age. We will plan a time that works for all of us once you have selected a puppy. How can I reserve a puppy? Can I visit my puppy before bringing them home? We encourage visitors as it is good for socializing the puppies. We do ask that all visitors are feeling healthy and have not been around sick dogs, though. What type of dog food are puppies started on? Puppies eat Taste of the Wild grain-free puppy recipe food. It can be found on Amazon here. We soak the puppy food in homemade bone broth to soften it while they are still little. Your puppy will be sent home with enough food for a few days worth of meals. How many puppies in a litter? Litter sizes vary, but are generally between pups. How many boys and girls per litter? This also varies. The generation in dogs reflects if the puppies are purebred or hybrid. P1 is the parent generation or purebred such as a Great Pyrenees, Standard Poodle, etc. When two P1 generations are bred, the resulting puppies are considered F1. Normally, the F1 dog is bred back to a Poodle, but technically, any back cross is an F1b cross. The F1 is half Poodle and half Great Pyrenees. When a dog from that type of cross is then bred to a Poodle, the amount of Poodle DNA inherited from parents is increased, and the non-shedding trait enhanced. In theory, an F1b should be less likely to shed and more hypoallergenic than either an F1 or an F2. They are loyal dogs with a protective instinct that are devoted to their families. They tend to be affectionate with them and love nothing more than being around their favorite humans. Mini Pyredoodles tend to be calm, fearless dogs with playful and pleasing personalities. As long as they are properly socialized and trained, they tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can have a high prey drive, so they may need some extra socialization and training if there are small pets in the household. A Mini Pyredoodle can also inherit the guardian, protective, and territorial instinct of their Great Pyrenees parent. This makes them naturally wary and suspicious of strangers and makes strong socialization and good training even more important. A well-socialized Mini Pyredoodle will warm up to strangers once introduced instead of viewing them as a threat. Mini Pyredoodles are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in homes with fenced-in yards where they can run and adapt well to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise and attention. They do well in most climates, but are sensitive to heat and the cold. These dogs bond closely with their families and thrive on attention, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Because of their territorial instinct and high prey drive, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Good breeding practices make a big difference in avoiding these health concerns. Reputable breeders will test and screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Mini Pyredoodles are intelligent and pick up on things easily. But, they are also easily bored, can be stubborn, and can have an independent nature. Because of this, these dogs are recommended for more experienced owners. If first-time dog owners are willing to enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional trainer, they can be a good fit for this breed. They could end up with a coat like their Pyr parent, Poodle parent, or something in between. If they have the Pyr coat, it will be fluffy and dense, shed a little year-round, and heavier as seasons change. Weekly brushing with daily brushing during seasonal shedding plus the occasional bath keeps the Great Pyrenees coat healthy and looking great. If a Mini Pyredoodle has a Poodle coat, it will not shed. But, they will require daily brushing to remove tangles and mats in addition to professional grooming every weeks. Nail trims once or twice a month help keep nails from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste daily can help prevent painful, damaging dental diseases later in life. Mini Pyredoodles may have bursts of high energy, but they tend to sit in a more moderate range. Daily walks plus some playtime or another activity are usually enough to keep them happy and healthy. If you are up for more activity, they likely will be as well. So, virtually any blanket statements about these dogs should be taken with a grain of salt. At the end of the day, all you can count on when you bring home a Pugshire Terrier is that the dog will be small. Their exact origins are unknown. Accidental Pugshire Terriers might have even been what inspired a breeder to start crossing the two breeds on purpose. One thing we can say for sure is that the purposeful breeding of Yorkies and Pugs has only really caught steam in the last 30 years or so and predominantly in the United States. Most Pugshire Terriers suffer from little dog syndrome. Little dog issues notwithstanding, Pugshire Terriers are great at eliciting laughter. These dogs need plenty of activity, but they can get that by simply goofing off for your benefit. It would crush their fragile little egos. Pugs, on the other hand, are less so. Regardless, Pugshires tend to be highly intelligent dogs. However, this often works against their owners as much as for them. As far as temperament is concerned, these are playful and energetic dogs. However, you have to socialize and train them well, as they can be full of nervous energy, especially around children and strangers. Are These Dogs Good for Families? In fact, you may need as many family members around as possible to help you burn through all their energy. That said, families with small children should be careful, as these dogs can have hair-trigger tempers. The animal needs to be socialized to be around kids, and the kids need to be taught the healthy ways of dealing with dogs. All you need is a little open space, a bit of free time, and a playful spirit. Their Little Dog Syndrome can work for you in certain respects. They may even try to chase them off! However, that pesky Little Dog Syndrome can rear its ugly head at inopportune moments, so you should watch them carefully. As far as cats and other small pets are concerned, be careful. Pugshires also have a strong jealous streak, so they may not appreciate seeing you lavish attention on another animal. Owning one might be like having a Pug, it may be like having a Yorkie, or it could be a mix of the two. That said, there are a few things that are consistent regardless of how the dog turns out. However, feeding them the right food is just as important as feeding them the right amount. This will help them feel full without packing on excess pounds, and it will also help keep them regular. Given how small these dogs are, you should pay attention to the size of the kibble that they eat as well. Fortunately, most kibbles designed for smaller dogs use small pieces of kibble. As a general rule, they need at least an hour of physical stimulation every day to stay happy and healthy. A long walk will generally do the trick, or you can just have them race around your apartment. You need to be careful about not pushing them too hard, in fact. Just as important as physical exercise is mental stimulation. You want to tax their sharp little minds, so games like hide and seek, obedience training, or puzzle toys are all excellent ways to burn off that mental energy. These pups are stubborn. There are no two ways about it, so expect to find yourself locked in a battle of wills during most training sessions. They respond best to positive reinforcement, and punishment will likely just cause them to dig in their heels and behave even worse. Be careful if you use food as a reward, though. Obesity is terrible for these pups, and they can easily get fat if you give them too many treats. Use them sparingly, and substitute praise and affection as much as possible. The fact that Pugshires are notoriously difficult to train makes them a poor choice for first-time dog owners. Pay extra attention to the hair around their ears and behind the neck. Bathing is largely optional unless they get visibly dirty, but if you do want to clean them, limit it to a few times a year. You should use a gentle, dog-friendly shampoo. Their eyes should be given special attention as well, as Pugs are known for having eye issues. Clean away any discharge, and take them to the vet if you see any sort of problem. That said, they still have their fair share of health issues. In particular, obesity will cause all sorts of horrible health issues for your pup. Keep their waistline trim and slim. Do your due diligence before buying a puppy. Also, Pugs are vulnerable to different health conditions than Yorkies, although there is a certain amount of overlap. As a result, the issues that your dog will be most likely to develop will depend in part on which parent breed they favor. Minor Conditions. They have a deep bond of attachment with their owners, following them from room to room, longing for them to return home. This energetic breed is a great playmate for children, though parental supervision is needed when small kids interact with the dogs to ensure that they do not end up hurting their four-legged friend. Just like the Pug, they too might get jealous when the owner gives special attention to another animal canine or noncanine in the family or probably a child. Despite their high energy levels and playful disposition, they enjoy taking naps for a long time. These dogs are clever and would spend their intelligence to think over a given situation, and might even display obstinate behavior at times. Combined with its alert and attentive nature, its occasional bouts of yappiness may be a great alarm to warn the presence of a stranger, thus making them a good watchdog. Care Exercise Your dog loves to go outdoors for walks to indulge in its inherent curiosity and explore new surroundings. It is recommended that you take your dog out for a leashed walk for at least half an hour every day. Give the Pugshire sufficient playtime when it is indoors too, to help it get over any boredom and be energized Grooming Shedding is minimal to average. To keep the coat from forming mats and keep dead hairs away, comb it twice to thrice each week. Also, brush its teeth at least 3 or 4 times weekly to avoid tartar buildup. Shampooing it once a month is enough. Health Problems Your pugshire puppies tend to carry some of the genetic issues related to its parent breeds including periodontal disease, cherry eye, tracheal collapse, Legg Calve Perthes disease and patellar luxation. Training Because of the inherent stubbornness in the Pugshire just as their parents, a patient and firm trainer is needed who would be able to groom them in a tactful way through positive reinforcement methods, rather than being harsh. Obedience: Generalize your training to varying conditions. Continue with these variations until he learns to obey your commands consistently in all environments. If he is still adamant to get your attention, ignore him until he gets calmed and pacified after which you may pat or cuddle him. In this way he will gradually realize that to get your attention and love he would need to behave well. Socialization: To help them overcome their feelings of jealousy, get the other dog or pet in your family to interact or socialize with the Pugshire and pay equal attention to both or all of them alternately so that neither of them feels left out. Normal routine diet, recommended for small size energetic breeds. Is the Pugshire right for you? What should we call this yorkie and pug mix? Before we take a look at some of the traits with this dog, we need to know its name. There are a few different names for this cross breed.
