Much of this trade supply is suggested to originate from large-scale, industrial-style operations, in which breeders may achieve low overheads by practising poor husbandry and deficient hygiene standards. In many cases, desirable aesthetic features are the product of inbreeding and positive selection for increasingly extreme physical traits, without regard for associated health issues. Conceivably, efforts to introduce legislation to protect the welfare of animals within the United Kingdom UK , along with effective education, media attention, and intervention schemes, may have contributed to a supply deficit of puppies bred in the UK as higher standards may increase overheads and production lag [ 15 ]. This, in turn, is likely to have encouraged puppy importation and smuggling, with puppy farms operating outside of UK jurisdiction supplying large sections of the British and UK market [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Characteristics of these supply routes may include fraudulent advertising, third party sales, accelerated separation from the mother, early or no vaccination, the transport of heavily pregnant bitches, and poor transport conditions [ 18 ]. Lax border checking regimes and low visual inspection rates, paired with insufficient fines and lack of sentencing for those caught illegally importing puppies, have failed to deter criminals from seeking out this high-profit, low-risk trade [ 15 ]. Meanwhile, within the puppy population, UK veterinary practices are reporting an increased incidence of severe to fatal infections, some occurring within days of acquisition, alongside an increase in chronic conditions that are most likely inherited e. The internet has been recognised as one of the main facilitators for irresponsible and illegal selling and buying behaviours [ 2 , 25 , 26 ]. The anonymity and the opportunity to reduce face-to-face contact makes online advertisement the ideal platform for sellers to encourage and prosper from impulse purchases, especially for those who do not wish their facilities to be scrutinized [ 15 ]. Several animal welfare organizations have recommended that buyers observe puppy and mother in their home environment, prior to purchase [ 28 ]. Within the market economy for pets, online systems distort the market for puppies, by potentially providing an effective sales platform for those prioritizing profit over purpose [ 29 ]: unscrupulous breeders are being provided with a tool with which to financially undercut those breeding to high standards [ 29 ]. Data Sourcing Data were collected over a month period, via web-scraping three popular classified advertisement ad websites advertising puppies for sale in the UK, Gumtree, Preloved, and Pets4Homes. Web-scraping and data collation were carried out by Hindesight Ltd. The raw data received consisted of individual ads, the incorporating source website, the seller location, the advertisement title, the date posted, the unique advertisement ID, the unique seller ID, and the unique litter ID. Though, if you are already a Frenchie Mom or Dad, trust you may still find the information here quite useful. In this piece, we'll give you a checklist of questions and warning signs to look out for while buying a French Bulldog puppy in order to ensure that you have an amazing experience with your new pet. Flow with me. Some of us are owners of Frenchies, while some of us just love the cute little pet. No doubt, French Bulldogs are a bundle of joy, and if you have decided to go for one, you have made the right decision. Just like while getting any valuable thing in your life, you want to be properly guided. When you get to the breeder, you'll notice that this dog is unlike some breed of dogs get along with human beings very easily, especially during their puppy life. So, you may find one or more playing with you even without knowing who you are. That feeling is indescribable when they are all over you. You are just going to love it - to say the least. But that can be a trap. Don't give in to it. French Bulldogs can play on your emotions, and you'll fall in love with them right at the breeder's place and forget to do the proper due diligence before actually going home with one. Check the eyes of the puppy, if they look red, it may be a sign of a health problem. Let's jump right into the questions you should ask a breeder before buying a French Bulldog. Buy a puppy of a mother who has only had only one litter, more than that means over-breeding and can lead to serious health implications; Ask if the puppy has been checked by a Vet; Ask to see the Puppy's parents; Ask if the parents have had health checks. She needs time to recover from the birth and being separated from her litter. There are certain dog breeds that are prone to developing certain health conditions. Some of the most common health conditions seen in French Bulldogs include: Deafness. I know I did when my wife persuaded us to go and see our own dog for the first time. Of the four of them, this one little fella scampered over to me and immediately started chewing on my knuckles. That when I fell in love with him. It was a really simple decision in which one we wanted to take home. As you know, we went on to name him Claude. But, given hindsight, there are some questions I would have asked the breeder before deciding to buy him. And there are also some things I should have looked for too. It was our first ever dog though, so hindsight is a wonderful thing. However, there are unscrupulous breeders and there are certain health and physical problems view all Frenchie health conditions and concerns you should check for before you get too excited. It also includes some questions to ask a breeder when buying a French Bulldog puppy. Choose a male puppy if you want a more energetic dog: or a female if you want a more relaxed dog. If not, walk away as this should be handled by the breeder before the puppies go on sale. It can give you some insight into what type of dog your Frenchie puppy is going to grow into. If the breeder refuses to let you see the mother, then walk away as this is a huge warning sign. Ask if the parents have had health checks: as this can give you insight into any potential health problems further down the line. Conditions to look out for include hip problems, cataracts, cherry eye , deafness, and soft palate issues. Ask how old the parents are: if the mother is less than 3 years old, any genetic health conditions might not yet have manifested themselves. Ask how often the puppies have been handled: the more the young pups have been handled by humans frequently it will be far easier to get him used to all the excitement in store when you get him home. Ask to speak to a previous client: the best breeders will be more than happy to let you talk with people who have previously bought a Frenchie puppy from them. Sadly Frenchies can have some severe health issues in their bloodlines which you should look out for when purchasing your puppy. Health issues can include:. Based on this feedback I wanted to give you the ultimate list of questions to ask, plus all the warning signs that should make you walk away. Not just warning sings about the French Bulldog puppy, but also her mother and the breeder too. Things to know before buying a French Bulldog puppy The moment you see that adorable French Bulldog puppy for the first time will last with you forever, it certainly did with me when we first met our own dog. Ask how often the French Bulldogs have been handled: When puppies are regularly handled by humans, they will be much easier when taken home. Ask whether a vet has checked the puppies: Puppies should have been checked by a vet and had their first set of vaccinations before going to their new home. Ask to speak to a previous buyer:A reputable breeder will let you talk to people who have bought a French Bulldog puppy from them before. Usually, these checkups include tests for stenotic nares, elongated soft palate, ocular cataract test, hip dysplasia, cherry eyes and deafness tests. You can ask the breeder for the proof of these tests or request the breeder to perform these tests prior to signing up for the puppy. Breeding frequency It is important to be aware of the breeding frequency of the breeder. We recommend 1 litter a year for a female. If a breeder has more than one French bulldog, it is important that they have only one pregnant female at a time, so that they can get the prime attention. It is ideal to have only two litters for French bulldogs throughout their lifetime. It is recommended so as brachycephalic dogs are known to struggle with pregnancies. Age of the parents and medical check Genetic conditions in brachycephalic dogs do not present itself until they are years old. This is why it is important to ask the breeder whether the parents are in that age range. If the parents of the puppy are below this age range, you might not have a way to determine the diseases the puppy might have. It would be ideal if you can meet the parents of the puppy and confirm that they are above two years of age prior to fixing the deal. It is also important to try and analyze the personality of the parents, are they hyperactive, aggressive? Do they easily blend in with the strangers? Frequency of handling the puppies Even though puppies let you handle them as they like to be accustomed to what is normal, however, handling them too much might prove to be irritating. This can make the puppy irritable when he is handled in the future. It is important the breeder does not handle the puppy too much and gives him his space whenever necessary. I imagine we all prefer to take a pet home who was carefully and thoughtfully bred and is happy and healthy. Not all breeders are established and have Frenchies that have up-to-par health and behavior. Sometimes you even pay less when purchasing from an appropriate breeder. You can do this by knowing the appropriate questions to ask a dog breeder listed below. Questions to Consider or Ask a French Bulldog Breeder When you are making such a big and important decision- purchasing a new French Bulldog to add to your family and care for forever- you have every right to be careful and know all there is to know. There are a number of factors to consider when visiting new Frenchies and questions to ask the dog breeder. A responsible breeder will be more than happy to answer any and all questions. The following is by no means the only questions there are to ask, but they are important ones: How many litters are present? A breeder has to put a lot of time and energy into guiding and caring for the puppies. If a breeder is caring for many litters, they will start to cut corners and not be able to put in as much effort to care for your future pup. A breeder who is seriously engaged in socialization does not have several litters at once. If a breeder does have several litters, they should have a staff who is consciously and systematically involved in the socialization of the puppies. Is the mother dog present? It is very important that the mother dog is present with her puppies. The behavior of the mother gives you information about the puppies. Moreover, it is very important for the education of the puppies that they learn everything from their mother. She teaches them how to behave, that they should not bite too hard, and what dog behavior looks like. Puppies can, in fact, leave their mother after seven weeks. Watch how the mother dog behaves. A mother dog with a litter of Frenchie puppies can sometimes be a bit protective against strangers who come to her puppies but may not react aggressively or anxiously to your arrival. Dogs that grow up in their own rubbish are often improperly potty trained. A good breeder potty trains their dogs and ensures the dogs sleeping quarters are kept clean. How do the puppies respond to visitors? Pups that are used to people should not respond too anxiously to visitors. While some dogs are naturally more anxious, a healthy, social, and human-friendly dog will come to greet you and be curious about you, even if it takes some time. It should be noted that different breeds have different temperaments, especially when meeting someone new. French Bulldogs are quite social and are not typically shy to new people. They should also be dewormed. The vaccination schedule will be at the discretion of the vet. The breeder should have a vaccination certificate or record from the vet. A breeder should happily provide you with this information. Have the parent animals been tested for hereditary defects and are there official documents? In dogs, hereditary disorders can occur, such as, for example, joint disorders such as hip or elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, or OCD or eye disorders such as PRA, cataract. French Bulldogs in particular often suffer from different health issues. It is important that this is taken into account when breeding in order to reduce the condition. Breeding clubs usually oblige their members to have parents tested for these conditions. Parents who exhibit a certain degree of the disorder are generally excluded from breeding. This is to reduce the chance that new puppies will have these hereditary conditions. When asking a breeder about hereditary defects, they should be able and willing to show you official results. You can also ask your vet or the breed club for further explanation and advice about the results of hereditary tests. There are no tests for every condition, so ask about the health of the parents. Does the breeder provide clear information and also ask questions? Not only should you have questions to ask a dog breeder, but they should also be interested in asking you some, too. You should feel like you can carefully make a decision, revisit if needed, and ask plenty of questions. A breeder should never tell a potential Frenchie parent that they cannot come back to revisit and that you need to purchase now. Is there a clear purchase contract? To be able to prove that a dog is yours, you must be able to show proof of purchase. In addition, it is very wise to ask for a real purchase contract that clearly states the rights and obligations of the buyer and seller. It may also be that the contract states that you must not allow the dog to be neutered, that you must make the dog available for breeding, or that you are not allowed to breed with it. This is okay.
