She hoped to combine the amiability of the Retriever, along with the warm temperament of the Poodle. As a result, today, we have this energetic doodle who can be a wonderful family dog. Initially, they were bred with the intention of training them as guide dogs or therapy dogs. But around the late s, their joyful and gentle nature made them very popular as home pets. Types Of Labradoodle Since the Labradoodle is not an independent breed, there can be certain inconsistencies in temperament or appearance. So, their sizes can vary depending on the size of the parent Poodle. On the other hand, the parent Labrador Retriever determines the type of coat for the Labradoodle pup. The fur type can be unpredictable due to this and can vary from soft to woolly or wiry. In addition, they can also belong to four categories of breeding. People generally prefer the generation having more hereditary Poodle qualities. The dominant Poodle trait typically makes them hypoallergenic or non-shedding. Therefore, it would be beneficial to acquaint yourselves with the different types of breeding categories before adopting Labradoodle puppies in New Jersey NJ. F1 Labradoodles The F1 breed is the healthiest as it is a first-generation cross between purebred Poodles and Labrador Retrievers. These puppies possess equally dominant traits of both their parent breeds. When purebred Poodles mate with a grown Labradoodle, F1B breeds of puppies are born. They, too, have equally dominant traits of both the Poodle and the Labrador Retriever. F3 Labradoodles F3 Labradoodle puppies are the least healthy breed, as it is a cross between two F2 Labradoodles. Such a multigenerational cross is typically a backcross between multiple generations of Poodle. Labradoodles are usually dogs with high energy. Regardless of their sizes, they are not well-suited to living in small-sized apartments. They can be high-spirited jumpers and are in need of constant mental and physical stimulation to thrive. Not that you need additional solid reasons to get yourselves a furry companion. But when it comes to Labradoodle puppies, there are reasons to convince you to adopt one. Website If the breeder has a website, look to see if they have legitimate contact details, including a telephone contact number and an email address. Some breeders ask you to contact them via an online form on their website, which is fine, too. Look closely at the website for obvious errors: Online scammers often copy and paste text and images from legitimate breeder sites. Often, photographs lifted from legitimate breeder sites are incorrectly captioned. Look closely at the photographs on breeder websites to see if there are watermarks on the images. That indicates that the pictures have been copied from sites such as Shutterstock. References and Testimonials Reputable breeders can provide you with genuine customer references and testimonials. So, always ask to see some before you commit to buying a puppy. Customer Vetting Responsible breeders will not sell puppies to random people online or through pet stores. Usually, you will be encouraged to visit the breeder to view the puppies and meet the parents. That also allows the breeder to meet you and make sure that you have the necessary experience and facilities to take one of their puppies. Breeding Kennels A responsible, ethical breeder will not keep their breeding dogs and puppies in cages or crowded places. All the dogs will live in clean, roomy, comfortable areas. How Many Puppies? Responsible Labradoodle breeders only produce a limited number of puppies each year. Also, good breeders usually specialize in one breed of dog rather than breeding many different types of puppies. So, if you want a Labradoodle, choose a breeder that only breeds different types of Doodles. Veterinary Records Good, ethical Labradoodle breeders will happily show you individual records of health screening and veterinary visits for your puppy and its parents. Contract A responsible breeder will expect you to sign a contract stating that you will have your puppy desexed as soon as he or she is old enough to have the operation. The contract will probably go further and state that you do not have breeding rights for your dog. Prices Check the price of the Labradoodles that the breeder is offering for sale. Guarantee Most good breeders offer health guarantees with their Labradoodles. The guarantee is usually for a period of one or two years and gives you redress to the breeder if your puppy develops congenital health problems during that time. As mentioned above, when it comes to buying a Labradoodle puppy, you get what you pay for. You can expect to wait a long time before you finally get your Labradoodle puppy! All good breeders have a waiting list for their pups, which can be anything from six months to two years! Breeder Mill Red Flags Breeder mills are more commonly called puppy mills or puppy farms. These operations produce vast numbers of puppies as cheaply as possible to make the largest profit. Unfortunately, that leads to substandard parent dogs being used in the breeding operation that are rarely health screened and are often kept in very poor conditions. The puppies produced by puppy farms are often of poor quality and can even have existing illnesses when they go to their new owner. Puppies produced by these backyard breeder mills are often sold for cheaper prices than those bred by reputable breeders, catching out many unwary buyers. Here are some top tips to help you avoid being duped by a puppy farm. Many Different Breeds Most reputable breeders specialize in one or two breeds. If you see an advert for multiple breeds, check out similar ads. If the same breeder is advertising lots of different breeds, they could be a puppy mill. Never pay for a puppy without seeing the animal first. Puppies are generally eight weeks of age before they can have their first vaccinations. If an ad states that the pups are less than eight weeks old and have been vaccinated, that could indicate a puppy farm. How Much? Puppy mills want to shift as many puppies as quickly as possible to exploit the current trend and generate maximum profits. To do that, they typically work on selling quantity rather than quality. Cheap puppies are usually from backyard breeders. Be Prepared To Wait Most reputable, ethical breeders will ask you to complete an application form and even be interviewed for your suitability to take one of their puppies. You will then be placed on a waiting list until a puppy becomes available. Health Certificates A good breeder can show you a clean, current health certificate for their parent breeding dogs, with proof of deworming, flea prevention treatment, and vaccination papers for the puppies. Contract Good breeders will ask you to sign a contract stating that you will not breed from your puppy without their permission. Meanwhile, if you decide to buy a puppy outside New Jersey, make sure that you check out our list of ethical breeders from neighboring states to avoid falling into the hands of puppy mills:. Share 0 Shares Golden Retrievers are known for their excellent temperaments and their love of people. These dogs make great family companions, and they are suitable for all kinds of obedience training as well as showing or even hunting. Most people will tell you that their Golden Retriever is the nicest dog that they have ever owned and a real joy to be around. However, there are some kinds of behavioral challenges that are common to this breed that can crop up from time to time. Puppies can show behavioral issues when they are learning about the way that you want them to behave, and older dogs might show new behavioral issues when something about their environment changes. If you have chosen to rescue a Golden Retriever, you might have to attend to behavioral problems related to abuse or maltreatment of the dog in question. The sooner that you can address behavioral challenges in your dog, the better for you and your pet. There are some common reasons that your dog might be showing behavioral issues at any age. The kinds of common solutions listed here can be easy to apply to nearly any behavioral issue and might be the solution that you have been looking for to make your dog a happy and well-behaved dog again. Be patient with your dog as you try to resolve these issues as well. Dogs can tell when you are unhappy with them and can be more reactive than they would be otherwise. Lack of Exercise Dogs need to be exercised. Only very old dogs will have a limited need for exercise and this might not even apply in all cases where a dog is elderly. Puppies, in particular, will need daily exercise and attention. When you are not giving your dog the time that it needs, it might start to show behavioral symptoms that are not ideal. You should always make sure that your dog is getting exercised enough before you assume that a behavioral activity that you do not like is something that needs training or attention specific. Change Change can be one of the biggest catalysts for behaviors that you do not like your dog displaying. Dogs can react negatively to added pets in the home, to changes in location, or even to changes in their diet. You will need to consider a major change of any kind as the opportunity for your dog to become flustered and show behavioral changes. Some dogs are more prone to feeling insecure than others. While Golden Retrievers are not often anything other than accommodating, some dogs can be impacted by even small changes to their routine in this way. Golden Retrievers are a very loving and happy dog breed, but older dogs might be suffering from discomforts or illnesses that make them feel less like doing the things that you want them to do. Be careful with old dogs that you are not disciplining them for an issue related to their health. If your older dog has been making messes in the house or seems grumpy all the time, make sure that you take your pet to see the vet before you assume that this is a behavioral issue. Puppies are just learning about how the world works and they will often try out all kinds of different behaviors to see if they are allowed. When we take puppies away from their mother, we become their parent and their pack. This means that we as humans need to give puppies all the guidance that the pack of other dogs would otherwise have given them. Golden Retrievers can exhibit a wide array of behaviors that you might not want them to display, but most of them are simple to deal with. Often all you need to do is show your dog the right way to do something and they will stop showing the negative behavior that you did not like. Adult dogs can display behavioral issues for a wide array of reasons, but most of the time, these behaviors are in response to changes in their environment. This might be a move to a new home, the addition of a new dog to the house, or even taking on an adult dog that you did not raise from the time it was a puppy. Adult Golden Retriever dogs are still very trainable, and you will usually have no problems getting your dog back on track. Making Messes in the House This is a very common puppy behavioral issue and it is easily remedied. The best way to teach your Golden Retriever not to make messes in the house is to crate train them. Make sure that you get the right size crate that is small enough that your puppy can just stand up and lay down comfortably inside of it. Dogs will not make messes in their dens where they sleep, so installing a crate in your home and making it the place where your dog spends unsupervised time is a great way to teach them that the crate and the house are your dens. When your puppy does make a mess in the house, you will want to simply press their nose to the puddle or mess and say firmly, no! You can then put your puppy outside to show them that this was where they should have made this mess. You will want to make sure that you are watching your puppy carefully when it is loose in the house and being certain that they are given time outside at least every half hour. If you have older dogs in the house, they will help show the puppy what the proper bathroom routine is. Chewing Things Up This can be a hard behavior to combat when dogs are young. This is often a teething behavior, and it will end when your puppy has all of its adult teeth. Some Golden Retrievers love to chew on things, but if you give them their own toys to chew on, they will typically make sure that they chew on their own possessions and not your shoes. Make sure to keep temptation at bay by putting your shoes and other items away from where your puppy can access them. Jumping Up on People Puppies have a wealth of energy, and they can sometimes display it in ways that are not ideal. If your puppy is jumping on people, you can work on teaching them not to do this by teaching them to sit. You can then ask them to sit down and wait when people walk up to them. Teaching them that the only way to get attention is to wait to be touched will show them how to ask for attention properly so that they stop jumping on people. This is a good thing to address when your puppy is young so that they do not continue to jump on people when they are fully grown. Digging Golden Retrievers can be prone to digging in the yard because they are driven to try to hunt for things to pick up and bring back to their owners. If you are dealing with an adult dog that is digging in your yard, make sure that you give them enough exercise and consider teaching them to fetch their own toys in your yard. This will teach them to think of the yard as a place where they play with their toys instead of digging. Marking in the House This is a common behavior for male puppies, but it is less common in adult dogs. If you have an intact male dog, this behavior can be hard to combat because their instincts will tell them to mark the house to protect it from other dogs that might challenge the safety of the house. When you have an adult dog that is marking in the house, you will want to take them to the vet to make sure that there is nothing medical that is causing this behavior. In housebroken dogs, suddenly marking in the house can be a sign of a variety of health concerns that you should not discipline your dog for. Golden Retrievers are big dogs, and you do not want them to be jumping over the fence and getting loose. You should also be sure your dog has enough toys, water, and comfort items in the yard to be content. Make Golden Retrievers are more likely to do this but Field Retrievers of both semesters can be prone to roaming. This is never a good idea since dogs can get into trouble, get hit by a car, or eat things that are bad for them while they are away from home. Being Aggressive With Other Pets in the House This behavior can happen when the dynamics of your pack of dogs or pets change. In some cases, an older dog might have been at the top of the pecking order and once it is gone, a younger dog will start to assert dominance that is not warranted. Intact males can display this behavior toward other young males, or an older female might also be dominant with other dogs as she ages. Another common issue that can happen is your Golden Retriever might choose to chase cats or smaller animals in the home. They are hunting dogs after all, and this can be a significant concern for smaller animals in the home. While your Golden Retriever is not likely to do anything more than pick up the animal and carry it places, it is still not an acceptable risk to let your Golden Retriever chase other animals in the house. When aggression is the issue that you are dealing with, sometimes calling in a dog trainer is the best way to solve the issue. Aggression can be complex to resolve, and you will find that many dogs that are displaying aggression will want to come back to this behavior over and over again. Sometimes you will need to feed the aggressive dog in another room or give them some hours outside alone each day to be calm and quiet. There are also some calming medications that can be used to help your dog to feel less intense toward the other dogs or pets in the home. Is your golden retriever struggling with some behavior problems? Welcome to the life of a golden retriever parent! Have you ever been around a baby late at night? There are also physical and mental stimulation needs. Golden retrievers were originally bred to retrieve gunned down birds for their owners. They had to work all day running through fields, streams, and marshes… It required a lot of energy to do all of that work, so being full of energy and desiring a job to do is in their genes! Can you see how your golden might be bored and looking for an outlet for all of their energy? So the question is, how do you mentally and physically exercise your golden? Here are seven ways to do that: 1. Give them puzzle toys My golden retriever, Oliver, has a ton of energy, so we give him a lot of puzzle toys. We give him frozen kongs often, which is where we take some of his food , soak it in water for ten minutes, stuff it in a kong , then freeze it. It takes him anywhere from minutes to get all of the food out and he absolutely loves them. Plus, they use up a ton of mental energy. We have a rubber ball that we put his food in and he has to roll it around to get his meals out. Teach them to love chew toys Dogs naturally love to chew and it releases feel-good endorphins. If your golden is anxious or has a lot of pent-up energy, getting them to go to town on a chew toy will do wonders for them. You can play tug or fetch, or especially if you have a mouthy puppy you can use a flirt pole to play with them. Take them on walks Taking your golden retriever on a walk will allow them to sniff, which will help with the mental stimulation, as well as get a little physical exercise. Usually, with Oliver, we go on walks and sprinkle in some training throughout. Train them Challenging your golden retriever by teaching them new things and making them earn treats and praise is a great way to burn off some of their mental energy. Plus, when you challenge them and they overcome those challenges, that will help build confidence and give them a sense of satisfaction both of which will help decrease bad behaviors. Check out this article to learn how to train your golden retriever. Set up doggy play dates Most goldens love playing with other dogs, so if you have a friend who has a dog, or you meet some people in an online dog group, that could be a great way for them to get some exercise. We recently attended a local golden retriever meetup and Oliver absolutely loved playing with all of the other goldens. Take your golden to daycare A few times a month, Oliver goes to doggy daycare and he has a blast. Whenever we pull up to the building he realizes where we are and he gets so excited. One of the workers there even told me he has a girlfriend! Remove The Temptation One day, seemingly out of the blue, Oliver developed the bad habit of digging into the trash can in the office. He would grab Post-it notes, tissues, crumpled up paper, anything… Then he would run around the house and try to get us to chase him to get it back. Eventually, we got fed up with it, so we moved the trash can on top of the desk for a few weeks. He got out of the habit, and now we can use the trash can in peace again. Are there any temptations for your dog that you can remove, either temporarily or permanently? Can you put your shoes in the closet so your dog will stop chewing them? Can you not give them a certain toy that they become aggressive or possessive over? If your puppy is biting you, leave the room. This is called redirection. You give them pets and tell them how much you love them. They pull on the leash and you let them go up to the smelly smell, which makes them happy because they get to check it out. Are you accidentally rewarding and positively reinforcing this bad behavior? If you are, that could be adding to your problem. You have to kindly and patiently teach them what you want them to do. Puppies also love to have fun. Be sure to not give in to their games and accidentally reinforce bad behavior like stealing socks. Another thing is puppy biting. You can learn more about the golden retriever puppy timeline here. Common Golden Retriever Behavior Problems Here are several common golden retriever behavior problems: jumping on people. Check Price on Amazon Although young Golden Retriever puppies have short attention spans, the ideal time to start teaching basic commands is at 8 weeks old, as soon as you bring your pup home! Training sessions should only be up to five minutes long at this young age but can be repeated many times throughout the day. The second effective discipline moment is at the precise moment your puppy performs the unwanted behavior. When your Golden Retriever misbehaves, you should immediately communicate to him that his conduct is unacceptable. Expressing your disappointment and denying a reward immediately after an improper action is performed helps your puppy associate his poor behavior with the experience of no reward. If this message is given later, a disciplinary moment is lost. Because scolding your Golden Retriever long after any wrongdoing is crazy as dogs only have a 2-minute short-term memory. An excellent example of this is when your Golden Retriever will be excited when you walk through your door, even if you were with him 10 minutes earlier! However, dogs can recall your training commands through associative memory, meaning they form associations between commands, events, and behavior. Instead, your Golden Retriever is deliberately doing bad things, whether he knows it or not! It might even strengthen it! At least if he barks at you, he gets some attention from you! This is referred to as demand barking and is when dogs have learned that barking serves to get them what they want. Instead, ignore the bad behavior and reward him only when he has resumed the learned positive behavior. If we take our example of demand barking, ignore your Golden Retriever by not reacting to him or yelling at him. But as soon as he goes quiet, quickly reward him. Timing is vital as you must offer the reward, such as a tasty treat when he stops barking. And of course, find time to be with your dog! As a high-energy dog, an adult Golden Retriever needs around 2 hours of daily exercise. This can vary according to age, size, health, and genetics. Golden Retrievers are already one of the breeds sadly prone to obesity due to too many owners treating them like humans, unable to ignore their begging and puppy-dog eyes. A more recent study by the Morris Animal Foundation to understand juvenile obesity in Golden Retrievers is currently ongoing. Dogs with no outlet for energy will also engage in destructive behavior because they need to find a way to entertain themselves. Chewing, biting, barking, digging, jumping up on people, pacing, urinating at home and general hyperactivity are examples of destructive behavior. Rather than punish, find time to exercise your Golden Retriever. If you consistently chastise your dog and perhaps do so well after the event, you are missing the discipline moment. You will only cause confusion, fear, anxiety, distrust, and aggression in your dog. Suppose you come home after leaving your dog for an hour or two, and you see that he has misbehaved, such as chewing your table leg, and he is sitting there cowering, ears pinned back, and showing the whites of his eyes while looking up at you. Then quickly redirect the unwanted behavior to the desired one and always reward good conduct. The Behavior Was Not Mastered in the First Place If your dog is inadequately trained and the behavior is not perfected, your Golden Retriever will neglect good behavior. On your side, this will take patience and consistency. Similarly, if the training was left uncompleted, the dog may regress, which means starting all over again. This time, make sure to complete the learning process and avoid inefficient techniques, such as command nagging. Teach your Golden Retriever to respond to a single cue every time. Check out this video on how an experienced Golden Retriever mother teaches her excited puppies to calm down before feeding them! When puppies are removed too soon from their mother, they miss out on this vital learning. This video is incredible — it has over 77 million views! How an experienced dog mother teaches her 8 weeks old puppies to be calm. It means that he is stressed, overwhelmed, or anxious due to being separated from you. However, sometimes it can be caused by a former family member no longer being around. If you regularly leave your Golden in his crate for hours, he may also suffer from this distressing condition. Common behavior problems of dogs with separation anxiety include excessive barking, howling, whining, urinating, or defecating in the home despite being house-trained, digging, escaping, chewing, and destroying things. Your dog simply cannot cope with being alone. Use behavior modification techniques, counterconditioning, and desensitization to reduce separation anxiety. For example, you can condition your dog to look forward to being alone when he learns to associate the sound of your keys with getting a special treat. Another technique is desensitization. This is where you gradually teach your Golden Retriever to cope with being alone by leaving progressively. For example, you can start by making progressive departures of minutes and slowly increase. You might be wondering… How do you discipline your Golden Retriever without punishment? Find the solution to that in the next section. Positive and Negative Reinforcement Discipline is how dog owners communicate that some behavior is acceptable to their pet and others not. A dog must understand what actions his master likes and those he does not to succeed. Positive reinforcement, also known as reward-based training, means using a reward for desired behaviors. As the reward treats, attention, toys, praise, etc. Your puppy will quickly learn nice things happen when he does the right thing. In positive reinforcement, rewards include: Treats: These should be healthy and given in moderation. You can give small pieces of meat, such as chicken, turkey, or ham, or you can try safe fruits or vegetables. Expression of physical attention: Your Golden Retriever will enjoy a hug, a gentle pat, or a stroke behind the ears. Negative reinforcement means taking something away or removing the reward to increase the frequency of the behavior. Once he is lying down, you reward him by releasing the pressure. You have removed something the dog finds unpleasant the negative part to increase the desired behavior. If you keep doing this, the behavior is reinforced. Another example of negative reinforcement is if your Retriever is pulling on the leash, you may decide to stop walking. The straining on the leash is a negative feeling for your dog, but the negative feeling goes away when he stops pulling. On the contrary, it means reinforcing good behavior and deterring unbefitting behavior. In other words, you should not punish your Golden Retriever. It also includes other forms of punishment that would cause the dog physical harm, such as withdrawing food and water, and psychological punishment such as over-crating or tying him outside for days on end. Dogs do not have the logical ability to associate punishment with their action and, therefore, are unlikely to change. Instead, your dog will develop fear and aggression towards you, ultimately destroying your relationship, as he will no longer trust you. Animal abuse is also a crime that constitutes violent acts, neglect, and failure to provide general welfare. Yelling also causes fear and aggression in Golden Retrievers, making them rebel against you, possibly with a bite, or they may try to run away. Over time, dogs can take a kind of indifference to your yelling and learn to ignore it. You will not get anywhere with them in training and achieve very little. This scientific research showed that dogs trained using aversive-based methods experienced poorer welfare in both the short and long term than dogs trained using reward-based methods positive reinforcement. Specifically, they displayed more stress-related behaviors and body language during training and increased amounts of the stress hormone cortisol. Rather than shout at your Golden Retriever, you will achieve far greater results if you use a calm voice and make concise, consistent commands in a confident tone. And wrong! This is a misconception, and it will only teach your pup to fear you. You have to toilet-train him! Instead, if your Golden Retriever pees on your carpet, quickly correct his behavior and redirect him outside. Reward him when he finishes off by giving lots of verbal praise and a training treat. Most pet stores have tons of choices regarding chewing and teething toys, or you can always find a great selection on Amazon. While punishing will cause harm, disciplining is intended to teach and reinforce positive behavior. Correcting unwanted behaviors always works better than punishment. Use effective positive and negative reinforcement as these have proven to be the best training methods for your doggo. Adverse training techniques are counterproductive and will only harm the intense connection between you and your dog. In some cases, you could lose it forever, which would be pretty sad. Getting to know your retriever: the basics What falls under the normal behavioral categories for dogs may be a blur to some, especially for new dog owners. So, here are the fundamentals you need to know. Now, like all dogs, Goldens jump, bark as a form of expressing their emotions, such as being happy, or scared in specific scenarios, digging around, and loving to chase small animals like chipmunks or squirrels. All of which are natural and normal. Retrievers are also highly sociable and energetic dogs, as they are called retrievers, after all. These then develop into behaviors, which can either be good or bad. With that being said, read on to learn more about common behavioral issues in retrievers. People-jumping Golden retrievers naturally love everyone they meet, even if it happens to be someone they have not met before. But sometimes, they may get a little too friendly. One particular way retrievers typically greet people is by jumping on people to say hello. And yes, these breeds were meant to be hunters the good kind with the everflowing energy they have within. A primary reason this happens is a lack of physical and mental stimulation through exercises or activities such as puzzle toys or dispensing toys to meet their physical and mental needs. Because of this, they tend to find their own way to meet these needs, some of which may not be pleasant. These destructive means may include chewing up socks or the furniture and even sneaking to rob your food on the counter! It could be your long-sleeved clothing, your arm, or a random twig they found at the park. No matter how gentle your retriever may be, when they hold you with their mouths, it might develop into a rather irritating habit, and may even hurt someone, if left unaddressed. A joy that Golden retrievers are more than eager to pursue. When out and about, retrievers tend to go on tunnel vision on where they want to go, such as an empty and open field just a few feet away. In doing so, they may pull on your leash and can sometimes topple you over with that sudden sprint as you get pulled down. This may also lead to breaking free off the leash and may cause your dog to get injured or lost. Needy for attention Goldens are undoubtedly and naturally friendly. Because of it, this means wanting to be in the spotlight of attention and care. This is why retrievers are suitable for and found in many family homes. Some ways they demand your attention can be through barking, grabbing, and nudging your arm to establish their presence, to name a few. Though each retriever may vary individually, there may be instances where how they get attention becomes negative. Such as stealing off your gloves from the table when you want to go grocery shopping. Over-the-roof energy levels When you walk by any golden retriever you see, there seems to be an overflow of energy through their smile as they pant or their wagging tails as they walk. Though this sounds fun to be around outdoors, it is not the case when being indoors. With energy to spare, retrievers will find anything they can do to use that energy. In most cases, it may be unwanted things or activities. These include running around and knowing over objects in the living room, biting or chewing off pillows, and leaving feathers all over the house. Separation anxiety The fact that they are sociable, loving, and family-oriented dogs, also makes them prone to separation anxiety. This may be when you have to leave the house to watch the movies or do some groceries. In fact, Golden retrievers tend to suffer separation anxiety at a higher rate than other dog breeds. The severity of their separation anxiety may range from mild to severe, which may be indicated by distinct symptoms. For retrievers with mild separation anxiety, they may pace, whine, drool, walk around frantically, or any other distress-related behavior. When the anxiety becomes severe, this may cause them to engage in destructive behavior such as digging at windows or doors or anything to get them outside. In doing so, they may be susceptible to unwanted injuries, especially when they dig at windows. Puppy biting Like all breeds, it only comes naturally for puppies to bite anything they can get their paws on, and yes, that means retrievers do too. It is crucial at this stage to train and teach golden pups how to inhibit biting. If this progresses without interference, it may lead to harmful injuries such as biting through the skin. Digging Digging is innate in all dogs, no matter what breed, size, or shape. This may be an issue, especially when they start digging objects at homes such as window frames, doors, or the fridge, as they may cause damage over time. This may result from being deprived of exercise and mental stimulation, which causes them to turn to digging as their way to cope and fulfill their physical and mental requirements. A great way to handle this is by either turning their attention with a pet toy or a simple game of fetch. Alternatively, you can also provide a safe outlet for them to do their personal digging, such as a dog-friendly sandbox. There are several factors or reasons why this may be the case for the rare few that do have aggressive tendencies. They include physical punishment from their past, a poor breeder, or a lack of socialization with other dogs or humans. At this point, resolving them simply comes by avoiding these factors in the first place, by choosing a reputable breeder, never physically punishing them for bad behavior, and ensuring they get socialized and introduced to other family members they meet from time to time. The bottom line The Golden retriever is a great dog breed for anyone, including individuals, couples, and especially families. Like all social beings, retrievers, too, naturally develop their sets of behavior as they are a hunting breed are innately set to retrieve things in their mouth. These include lack of physical exercise, mental stimulation , socialization, bad breeders, and lack of training on the rights and wrongs. Some of the best ways to combat them are by addressing these factors, that is by finding a reputable breeder, ensuring they get introduced to other dogs and humans to get familiarized, giving them puzzle toys for mental stimulation, taking them out on dog walks for physical exercise, and teach them how to properly greet strangers without jumping on them without any physical punishment. More Behavior. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Golden retrievers are such great family dogs. And they tend to have some behavior problems because of their great characteristics. Most goldens want to be near their people. And they love to be petted and get attention. They may jump, grab our hand or arm, or engage in some destructive behaviors. Many of these are normal dog behaviors that can be modified through training and exercise. Normal Dog Behaviors Versus Abnormal Behaviors Dogs naturally dig, bark, express fear in certain situations, mark territory, chase small animals, and jump. They may steal food. Or want to be with us all the time. Goldens were bred to be sociable, high-energy dogs. My rescued golden Spencer almost always had to carry something in his mouth. So I made sure there were safe toys for him to happily tote around. Unfortunately, many dogs are given up to shelters because of behaviors that can be modified. To have a great companion takes a lot of work, patience, and time. And to meet those needs. These should be dealt with by behavior specialists who can evaluate the individual dog and determine the best behavior modification plan. These abnormal behaviors include aggression to those around the dog, obsessive-compulsive disorders, shutting down, and severe separation anxiety. Why Behavior Problems Develop There is no one reason why some behavior problems occur. Unfortunately, goldens are so popular—the third-popular breed ranked by the American Kennel Club—they are often poorly bred. There are too many back-yard and puppy mill dogs who are more likely to not be the examples of what the breed should be. Jumping on People Golden retrievers usually love everyone and never met a stranger. Goldens are the greeting committee of the dog world. Many dogs want to jump on people when greeting them. The golden can, of course, unintentionally injure someone, knocking them over in his exuberant greeting. Engaging in Destructive Behavior In addition to friendliness, goldens were bred to hunt. They have energy to spare. And they were bred to retrieve and have something in their mouths. They may dig up the garden. Or chew up our furniture. Or they may steal the food on the counter. And the food they eat may be toxic, such as chocolate or raisins. Or they may get a blockage from ingesting a towel or sock. A bored, under-exercised golden can get very creative in meeting his needs. They often need to have something in their mouths. That is, he may constantly try to hold our clothes, arm, or hand in his mouth. Biting is a natural canine behavior. But puppies should be taught bite-inhibition. And it can be dangerous. Someone can be badly bruised or even pulled down. Pulling on the Leash Goldens love to go places and greet all their new admirers. But they want to get there sooner rather than later. Many dogs pull on a leash, but not all are as friendly as goldens are known to be. And they can be lazer-focused on getting where they want to go. Being a rather large dog, a golden pulling on a leash can injure someone. An owner can be pulled down and get injured. Or the dog himself can get free and get lost or injured—or worse. Demanding Attention Because of their natural friendliness, goldens may want to be the center of attention. They are so family-oriented, they love to be with us. Some goldens may bark at you for attention. They may nudge you and grab your arm to be recognized. Some may even engage in unwanted behaviors like taking something off the table. Even negative attention is attention. Hyperactivity Some goldens seemingly bounce off the walls. They are like a hurricane passing through the living room. Tables are cleared of bric a brac. Pillows are shredded and on the floor. But your happy golden is furiously wagging his tail, looking for the next item he can use to help expel his excess energy. Separation Anxiety Because of their innate friendly, family-oriented behavior, goldens may suffer from separation anxiety at a higher rate than some other breeds. Their need to be with us can lead to some unwanted behaviors. Dogs with mild separation anxiety may drool, pace, whine, and generally behave in a distressed manner. Dogs with severe separation anxiety may become very destructive. They may try to get out of doors and windows, feverishly digging at door and window frames. They may even severely harm themselves in their attempts to get free. Dogs with separation anxiety may need professional behavioral help. We owe it to our goldens to do all that we can do to meet their natural needs. A bored, untrained, under-exercised, unsupervised golden is going to develop some problem behaviors. Some of the tips below will even help your golden from developing any of the potential problems cited above. I wrote the ways to help fix a problem separately from the problems because it will probably take more than one item to successfully change an unwanted behavior. All of the favorable interactions we have with our goldens also help further our bond with them. Physical Exercise Goldens were bred to hunt. They are highly-energetic dogs. Walks, fetching, jogging, agility, and swimming can all be great ways to physically exercise your golden. A vet check-up is advisable prior to starting any exercise program. Physical exercise can help decrease or eliminate the above-named problems. Of course, you want to exercise your dog enough but not over-tire them. Dogs who have been sufficiently exercised are less likely to jump or engage in destructive activities such as digging or chewing. Also, dogs who are exercised and calm before we leave are less likely to develop separation anxiety. Obedience Training Obedience training helps us communicate with our dogs and informs them what behaviors are desired. So we can teach them to sit before they receive attention. Or to lie down next to us and settle. And we can show him what toys he can put in his mouth rather than destroying items or turning us into his chew toy. Redirection works. And we can teach them to not pull on a leash and to walk on a loose leash. Part of the training should include how to leave your dog alone. This will help prevent separation anxiety from developing. Start with short sessions. Make leaving a happy opportunity—when great things appear. Leave a frozen, stuffed Extreme Kong with him as you leave. If your dog has already shown signs of separation distress, get the help of a qualified behavior specialists. As far as your golden inappropriately seeking attention is concerned, you can ignore your dog. Turn away or get up and leave. But do give him the attention he needs on your terms by calling him over to you occasionally. Pet him. Have him do a command or trick. Praise, pet, and treat. You should also play games with him. Teach him to tug a toy like a rope or long fleece to and give. You can have him play fetch. You can play hide-and-seek where you go and hide and call him to you. Make a big deal when he reaches you YES! Good boy! And not at all with a dog who has separation anxiety. But, to goldens, this is what they often enjoy most. Everyone is a potential friend. Goldens will thrive if they are fed the same times each day, are exercised as needed routinely, and receive attention from their people every day. No dog should be just put aside like a statue. Goldens especially need attention through positive daily interactions—play, training, exercise. If ignored, their sweet, golden personality will wilt. Final Thoughts Golden retrievers are such happy, affable, family dogs. But they are prone more than some breeds to certain problem behaviors because of their genetic purpose to retrieve and their desire to be with people. By doing so, their lives—as well as ours—will be full and happy. Does your golden engage in any unwanted behaviors? How have you handled them? Please tell us about it in the comment section below. It can be present at birth due to genetic defects or develop over time as part of aging. Deafness can also be present in one ear unilateral deafness or in both ears bilateral deafness. Deafness is also common in Merle French Bulldogs as well, and we recommend staying away from breeders that offer merle French Bulldogs due to the other various genetic defects that are associated with the merle gene. The Role of Color in Hearing You may be wondering why the color of the coat can affect hearing. A lack of pigment cells The reason for this is that the piebald gene is associated with a lack of pigment cells which give the appearance of their coats. This affects the small hairs in the ear responsible for hearing There are small hairs in the inner ear that are called cilia, and when there is an extreme lack of pigment cells, the cilia may not develop properly, resulting in deafness. Be sure to ask your breeder about BAER testing If you are interested in a predominantly white French Bulldog or are just concerned about the possibility of your new puppy being deaf, be sure to ask your breeder about performing a BAER test. Causes of Deafness Congenital deafness present at birth Presbycusis acquired hearing loss Ototoxicity Loss of hearing due to medication Head trauma. This guide will be the most beneficial for people that; a are considering the adoption of a deaf dog. If you are in any of the categories above this article is absolutely for you. We understand this article is long, however, we have a lot to say on the subject matter and great tips that can help many dog owners and their pets. This will not be an article that we research the subject and put together some scientific formula. This is based on our lives and true experiences. The breeder promised my new blue baby boy was completely healthy. I was provided with all his documents and records. I did not have any concerns for any health issues at that point nor did I have any idea he was deaf. I took my tiny Frenchie puppy home and knew his name would be Bluenjy. Many people ask on a daily basis how I came up with this name. After all he is the only one in the world with this name. I knew instantly his name was meant to be Bluenjy Blue and Benji combined. I chose a unique name because I knew he was unique from the moment I saw him. There was something so special about him and I wasn't wrong. I fell in love instantly like nothing I have ever imagined. I never understood why my Frenchie would stalk me everywhere and not leave my sight. French Bulldogs are known to love being with their human and always chasing them everywhere but there was an extra clinginess I didn't understand. It was extra then when he was just a puppy and it is extra now hasn't changed. When I'm in bed Bluenjy is laying besides me when I go to the kitchen he is right behind me, when I go to the bathroom yes, you guessed it he is there too. No matter where I go he will always be my shadow. Now there is only one exception that he doesn't follow me, that's only when he falls asleep and can't feel my steps on the floor. I usually have to sneak out of the room with light feet because I don't want to wake him up when he is sleeping but he is so in tuned with me he usually does. You thought a normal Frenchie is clingy? You clearly never met mine and I wouldn't change it for the world. He doesn't really greet other household members whenever they come home the same that he does with me. I have had dogs my whole life, I don't recall ever experiencing that with any other dog. I have to make the same point I made in the section above I don't believe it is a Frenchie breed characteristic. Yes, Bluenjy is a Frenchie but I believe both his breed and deafness contributed to him choosing one person who can be his guide in life. I put myself in his position and the way I see it is following 2 people can be confusing. Following one is a lot simpler from his point of view. It is no secret of how much I love Bluenjy however, a lot of owners love their dogs and sometimes they are not favored. So why did Bluenjy choose me to be the one person whom he can count on the most? Is it the unconditional love that I give him? Is it that I held him first when he was 8 weeks old? Is it him being in my lap on the first car ride home tmi next or me being the first person he threw up on? Or is it cause I gave him his first bath? Tried to potty him and teaching him tricks? Is it the funny videos and moments we shared together? As I reflect back we have done everything together from the very first day he came home. It is no wonder or coincidence I am his go to human. He trusts me and I trust him completely and the bond we share is like no other. I attributed them to him being stubborn even though Bluenjy is a people's' pleaser I thought maybe its puppy hood, maybe its his breed, maybe he had "selective hearing" and just did what I asked whenever he felt like doing it. Maybe I was in denial all together. I thought there was no way he is deaf, his breeder would surly inform me if he was. I needed a LOT of red flags before I said that's it this Frenchie can't hear and I need to have his hearing checked at his vet. Took extra long to wake him up. Startle - Bluenjy would jump when someone touched him on the back without seeing them prior to touching. Eye contact - Bluenjy needed my eye contact all the time to know what I wanted. Hand signals - Bluenjy would often look at my hands to see what I am suggesting. Absolutely no head tilting — movement of the ears or anything that suggests those bat ears are nothing but accessories on his head. No barking - this could be different from dog to dog. Bluenjy rarely ever barks. I did train him to bark on demand when he was a puppy and it was extremely difficult to teach him to bark. I sat with him as a puppy showing him the motion of barking with my mouth everyday until he finally understood what I even asked him to do. Everything already mentioned above - extra clinginess. I could hear the nails on the wood floor and the panic in his breathing I had to go downstairs to get him as he didn't know where I was. Bluenjy's back was towards me and he was looking elsewhere, I called him multiple times over and over louder and louder he didn't hear me at all and he was just 2 feet away from me. I finally had to walk in front of him so he would see me. This incident was the first time I knew something was really wrong If your dog is exhibiting any of the above or similar signs don't hesitate call your vet and get your dog's hearing checked. It will save you and your Frenchie a lot of frustration. I discovered my French Bulldog was deaf after he was a year old. We navigated life just fine before I even knew he was deaf, however, knowing it made everything make sense and validated so many scenarios. I was finally able to piece everything together and was able to be sensitive and understanding of his hidden disability. You do not want to ever wake up a deaf dog with a touch ever. We have shared this waking up video with our followers some time ago and this is the best method of waking up Bluenjy. In this video I show my method of waking up my Frenchie. I start with light taps on the floor next to him and calling his name. They can still feel vibrations when you speak so I always do so. Slowly increase the tapping and become louder as you go. This always works like a charm. You don't ever want to wake up a deaf dog abruptly. If your dog doesn't wake up immediately take your time and increase the taps. This is the absolutely the best method to wake deaf dogs up. Do not touch the dog whatsoever. Any abrupt movement could cause panic anxiety or worse, a heart attack. When people see your dog have a disability they would be more mindful in regards to touching your Frenchie without your consent. When purchasing a collar always keep in mind to get one with breakaway buckle. A breakaway collar for Frenchies would ensure the proper fit and that your dog is safe in extreme situations. Breakaway buckles are especially designed for pets to prevent strangulation. Our innovative harness with D ring in the front will provide all the comfort a deaf Frenchie needs. It helped our dog and we're sure our Health Harness will help yours too. Since you can't tell your Frenchie "come here" when he is deaf you simply lead them with the front D ring leash attachment harness where you need to go. A simple yet safe concept that allows for no pull, no choke walk. We usually put his food away from the others. In Frenchie meet ups we make sure no one brings out food and if we are giving treats, Leonard is given his treats separately from the others to make sure everyone is safe. Leonard's mom have taken her experience with her own deaf Frenchie applied and modified their lifestyle to keep everyone safe. Even though they can't hear the bell they will learn to get your attention that way. I believe the advice from Maude's mom is incredibly important. To the average person it doesn't make sense to train a deaf Frenchie with a bell because they can't hear, however, if you take a closer deeper thought into this you will realize that a bell replaces a bark in a regular dog that can hear. We already mentioned above that deaf dogs rarely bark and barking is a big part of dog communication so a bell makes a lot of sense. Instead of barking and telling you when they need to go potty they can giggle the bell. Also you can easily locate a pet with a bell which is another plus. Pintsizedbuffalo - I would recommend hand signals. They learn and adjust just like any other dog. You would have to train a dog that can hear so it shouldn't be any different for a deaf Frenchie. We couldn't agree with the above statement more. We would like to thank all three fellow deaf Frenchie mamas for their input time and advice in the hope of helping others, educating and learning. I was training Bluenjy with hand signals before even knowing he was deaf. To my surprise it was very easy and he was getting things so fast. With hand signals you have to be consistent. Do the same signal every time you want your do to do the same thing and reward when your dog does it. Dogs that are congenitally deaf since birth do not realize they can't hear, they were like that from the very first day so they don't understand they have a disability. Dogs that are born with this disability are resilient and go through life with the best attitude and without a worry. Dogs that were not born deaf have a harder adjustment and could show frustration or anger at first. They know they were able to hear once and that makes things a little more challenging especially if you have to start re-training your dog in hand signals at an old age. We recommend training your dog with verbal commands as well as hand signals whether your dog hears or not. This will be very helpful in the case that your dog ever becomes deaf one day. I find myself having to explain to people my dog is not growling this is just how he breaths. When a dog is deaf they can at times be extra loud because they can't hear themselves. My Frenchie Bluenjy is extra loud when he eats, gets excited, plays licks his paws sleep or pretty much anything else. This is unrelated to his BOAS which he had the surgery for he will always be loud just because he can't hear his own self and that is totally normal for us. My French Bulldog does not get a hint when another dog is growling at him. He will keep on going towards the dog in a playful manner even though the other dog clearly wants nothing to do with him. This is where your instinct should kick in as a parent. If you see a dangerous situation approaching please remove your dog from that environment as soon as possible. Not everyone will ask you before reaching their hands towards your dog, however, be adamant and be your dog's protective. Have your dog close to you to avoid people touching and scaring your dog. If a person asks first you can tell them your dog is deaf and they need to put their hands for your dog to smell first then it would be safe to pet. There will be times a deaf dog will be confused and that is perfectly normal. Be patient and loving to your pet. Your dog is probably confused in that moment. Give them plenty of love every single day, they will appreciate it and feel secure. We always like to look at the bright side of things, most optimistic people do and I am one of those. Here are some positive things in relation to a deaf dog: A deaf dog will usually be talented in another area or develop what I call the 6th sense. For my dog it was no different. He developed an extraordinary ability to hold things with his paws and he is well known for that talent. He has been doing that since he was a baby and was not trained to do so. I discovered he has this ability after holding him like a baby in my arms and he would try to reach out to things I was holding and my hands. I believe every deaf dog has a special ability or talent to compensate for the hearing impairment. Fireworks will never scare your dog and deaf dogs can handle those situations much better than dogs that can hear them. Deaf dogs are incredible to say the least. Yes, you would have to do certain things differently but the bond you will share is like no other. Certain breeders euthanize a puppy if is found to be bilaterally deaf. Their reasoning for choosing euthanasia : deaf dogs are challenging to train, get hit by cars and they can snap or startle easily when sleeping or eating. In our opinion these are all great excuses to not give a dog a chance at life because the breeder wants a cleaner name. There are many people who would love to adopt care and love a deaf dog. They are special unique and deserve to be loved just like any other dog. Start in a fully fenced area to ensure safety and slowly teach your dog to check in with you every couple of minutes. Also use the same area to teach your dog to walk besides you. When you adopt a dog into your family there will be no manual that comes along with the dog. It is all a learning experience and we get better over time just like anything else in life. We should all aspire to learn evolve and get more educated on how to be the best pet parent we can be. Whether your dog is deaf, blind or has another disability they all deserve the best life they can have with unconditional love. Please let us know below if we forgot to mention anything, you have a question or simply want to share your story. Unless distracted for awhile. Please give me guidance of raising this puppy as I feel I may not be best owner and should give it new home : Jasper cell, I am on whats app as well. High very high in blue eye-piebald Frenchies Cream Albino very uncommon in Frenchies Moderate to High The estimated risk of French Bulldogs of certain coat colors being deaf is based on the correlation between the genes for certain coat colors also being linked to congenital sensorineural deafness. For merle and piebald coat colors, the presence of blue eyes is closely correlated with congenital sensorineural deafness. The type of deafness associated with coat color is classified as congenital sensorineural, meaning that the deafness is caused by a genetically inherited trait and causes permanent loss of the ability of the nerves and inner ear structures to pick up and convey auditory stimuli. In normal puppies, the ear canals open up around days of age, but the nerves of the auditory system are not fully developed until three months of age. Puppies with coat color-liked congenital deafness are not deaf from birth but lose their ability to hear around weeks of age. Therefore, between the age of days the age at which the ear canals open and three weeks, the puppy may appear to have normal hearing for its age keeping in mind that hearing continues to mature until three months of age. In puppies with congenital sensorineural deafness, the hairs linked to the pigment-producing cell in the inner ear start to degenerate, causing permanent hearing loss. In most cases, it is due to the genes for lack of pigment that results in white fur also being linked to the lack of growth of the tiny neural hairs in the inner ear that helps to pick up sound waves and relay them to the nerves. In puppies suffering from congenital sensorineural deafness, the tiny hairs degenerate within the first few weeks of life, causing irreversible hearing loss. Congenital sensorineural deafness does not always affect both ears. In fact, it is more common for only one ear to be affected; however, this is vastly underdiagnosed as deafness in one ear usually goes unnoticed unless a specialized hearing test called a BEAR test is done. Baer tests more details on that below are not done in puppies younger than five weeks due to the loss of hearing mechanism in pups suffering from congenital sensorineural deafness described above. Deafness can only be diagnosed around weeks and is easy to miss as puppies rely on several other sensory cues such as their sight, smell, and vibrations. Deafness in only one ear is near impossible to diagnose without a BEAR test and often goes undiagnosed. However, most owners will quickly realize that their puppy has impaired hearing if both ears are affected. For example, the pup does not startle or wake up in a situation where there is a sudden loud noise or does not come when called. Your vet can test for deafness in each ear separately using BAER, the only reliable way to pick up unilateral one-sided deafness. In a dog with normal hearing, the electrodes will show waves of electrical activity on a graph depicting how auditory nerves pick up on sounds. In deaf dogs, there will be little to no response on the graph, meaning that the nerves did not pick up on any auditory stimuli. Merle And Double Merle Blue-eyed merle Frenchies have a higher likelihood of suffering from congenital sensorineural deafness. The merle coat color is undoubtedly beautiful and unique and has been in high demand over the past few years. A double merle dog is produced when both the mom and the dad carry the merle gene. The gene for merle coat color is simple autosomal dominant, which means that if a dog carries the gene, they will express it. If a pup inherits the gene for merle coat color from both parents, they will often have patches of pure white interspersed with merle and may have blue eyes. Unfortunately, double merle puppies are often deaf, have poor vision, and are sterile. Breeding two dogs that both have merle coats coloring is considered unethical. In dogs where only one of the parents is merle, the likelihood of congenital deafness is slightly lower compared to double merle but increases with the amount of white they have in their coats. In other words, not all white and merle French Bulldogs will be deaf, but the likelihood of congenital sensorineural deafness directly correlates with the amount of white these pups have in their coats. Piebald or Extreme Piebald Piebald coat color is predominantly white with flecks of darker fur. In piebald coat coloring, the base coat color is white with patches of black. The classic example of the piebald pattern is the dalmatian, where white fur is predominant with few patches of black interspersed. The genes for piebald coat color are closely associated with congenital deafness, but the genetics of the piebald gene as it relates to deafness is not as simple to understand as it is for the merle-gene. We do, however know that the degree of piebald correlates with the likelihood of deafness, and thus extreme piebald dogs are more likely to be deaf. The piebald gene may also play a role in the expression of blue eyes in its carriers, and piebald animals with blue eyes are more likely to be deaf than their non-blue-eyed counterparts. Cream Cream-colored Frenchie. Note how the fur on the back is not completely white. Also, note the greyish pigment on the muzzle. This is due to the color dilution gene. The cream coat color in French Bulldogs can be described as slightly lighter than fawn but darker than white. For example, if color dilution genes are expressed, the black coat color will turn out as blue or grey. Similarly, a cream French bulldog may be identified by having a color-diluted nose color such as brown i. The genes coding for color dilution is recessive, meaning that both parents need to carry the gene for some of the pups to have this trait, making the cream coat color one of the rarer French Bulldog color varieties. At this point in time, there is no research pointing to a link between the color dilution genes associated with cream-colored French Bulldogs and deafness. Albino An albino Great Dane. Note the pink nose and lack of pigment around the eyes. Also, note how the eyes are abnormally small and recessed in the eye sockets. This is called microphthalmos and is also linked with the gene for albinism. Luckily, albinism is extremely rare in French Bulldogs. Albinism occurs when an animal or human lacks any pigment cells. You can usually identify an albino dog by light-colored eyes, pink eyelids, and pink paw pads. Their skin will have a distinct pinkish tone with white fur as there is no melanin pigment to camouflage the pinkish color of blood vessels in the skin. There are different types of albinism in which various tissues lack the pigment-producing cells, melanocytes. Most but not all types of albinism correlate with congenital deafness. Luckily, albinism is exceptionally uncommon in French Bulldogs. If the puppy has sensorineural deafness due to inheriting CSD-linked coat-color genes from both parents or where one parent is deaf, it is considered unethical breeding, and you should avoid buying from such breeders. However, if the deafness is due to an unrelated non-genetic cause such as an ototoxic drug medicine causing damage to the ears , or hypoxia during birth, you may decide to adopt such a puppy depending on whether you are able and willing to accommodate the unique needs of a deaf dog. According to ethical breeding guidelines, all pups from a litter with one or more deaf pups should not be used for breeding. Therefore, deaf animals and animals known to possibly carry genes associated with deafness should not be allowed to breed. Dogs that are deaf are at increased risk for injury or deaf due to undetected dangers such as cars. In addition, deaf dogs are more likely to reflex bite when startled. This is a massive concern in households with young children or other pets. Deaf dogs tend to be more anxious or aggressive due to constantly being prone to startle. They may also be more inclined d to attack unfamiliar humans or animals. Deaf dogs are also very difficult to train and, unfortunately, often end up in animal shelters due to behavior problems associated with deafness. All the abovementioned factors are highly personality-dependent, and it is impossible to tell which deaf Frenchies will develop these unwanted behaviors. Frankly speaking, you will be opening yourself up to an emotional rollercoaster ride when adopting a deaf French Bulldog. You may find the reward of being able to provide a disabled dog with a happy home. Still, you may likely also face a situation where an anxious or aggressive dog puts you in a position where you will have to choose between your pup and the safety of your children. A deaf French Bulldog is definitely not recommended for a first-time dog owner. On the flip side, there are many happy stories of deaf animals and their owners learning to communicate by non-auditory cues. For example, flashing porch lights when their owner is calling them in in the evening or by using a collar that can vibrate. If you decide to adopt a deaf French Bulldog, it is crucial to prevent accidental breeding of your pup and rather have them sterilized. The French Bulldog gene pool is already a dire mess of inbreeding and subsequently contains an unethically high prevalence of genetic disorders. Conclusion The popularity of specific coat colors and the subsequently high price that people are willing to pay for these animals do not deter breeders from further deteriorating an already decrepit French Bulldog gene pool. Frenchies are rising in popularity due to their distinctively cute appearance and warm personalities. But, believe it or not, numerous data sets show that French Bulldogs are arguably the least healthy dog breed worldwide. As a vet, having had to deal with countless French Bulldogs who have a poor quality of life due to the way we have bred them to be, I am urging you to carefully consider your options before deciding to buy a French Bulldog. You will be far better off with a non-brachycephalic breed. You will not only save thousands on vet bills, but you will also likely have a dog who lives a longer, healthier life. You might also find the following articles insightful:. Pin 0 Shares Today I wanted to talk about French Bulldog hearing problems, why they happen, how Frenchies can lose their hearing, plus how some will even be born with hearing issues. I have written some notes on how you can take care of a deaf Frenchie towards the end of this page. But firstly, let me answer a few of the most common questions first in a more concise format. Do French Bulldogs have hearing problems? White French Bulldogs are more prone to hearing issues due to a genetic trait which will be present from 6 weeks old. Just like other dogs, Frenchies can get hard of hearing in later life too. How to tell if French Bulldog is deaf? With older dogs you can also diagnose hard of hearing by squeezing squeaky toys and illicting no reaction. What causes deafness in Frenchies? There are two main reasons why your French Bulldog has hearing problems. The first one is congenital deafness from birth. This is common in breeds which have the extreme piebald gene, particularly dogs with white fur. I will explain more about the French Bulldog deafness gene in the next section. The second reason why your French Bulldog is deaf could simply be down to age or illness. Hearing problems are common in older dogs, just like us humans can develop deafness in our own later years. Age-related deafness or hearing loss relating to illness can occur due to: Ear infections and ear canal disease. Nerves degenerating in old age. Tumours or cancers in the ear. Trauma to the ear or exposure to loud noises. Adverse reactions to medications to remedy other illnesses. The French Bulldog deafness gene Congenital deafness can appear in French Bulldogs who have white pigmentation in their coat. Scientists have discovered that dogs with white in their fur are more likely to suffer with hearing problems from birth. French Bulldog hearing problems are more common in white Frenchies, with the deafness developing in the first month of their life. Hearing problems can also be inherited from abnormal genes in the parental chain. French Bulldog coat colors which have the highest risk of hearing problems are: White haired. Piebald irregular patches of color, usually white and black. Roan white or gray hairs mixed through the fur. Merle desaturated colors, especially where blacks become greys or blues. Do French Bulldogs have good hearing? However, as a general rule of thumb, French Bulldogs do have good hearing. Dog breeds with upright ears hear much better than those with floppy ears. The placement and size, plus the ability to swivel the ears lets Frenchies hear better than many other dogs. What about French Bulldog selective hearing? The reason this is commented about so much is due to the stubborn nature of Frenchies; they can be difficult to train, and this sometimes seems like they have selective hearing! Are all white French Bulldogs deaf? Whilst dogs with white fur or piebald coats are more at risk from hearing loss in one or both ears, not all white Frenchies will be affected. Another study I found reported that hearing loss in just one ear had a .If you are thinking about buying a white French Bulldog puppy, then I would recommend that you request a hearing test. This can be done with puppies as young as 6 weeks old. Whilst being deaf in one ear should not put you off from getting a dog, complete hearing loss will be a challenge. Deaf dogs demand a lot of care and attention as their quality of life can be severely impacted. However, if you genuinely believe your French Bulldog is deaf and hard of hearing, here are some things you can do to diagnose the issue before going to the vets. Your Frenchie seems to be unresponsive to everyday life around him. Your Frenchie does not respond to his name being called. Your Frenchie will often shake his head due to ear pain. Your Frenchie has a nasty smelling discharge from both or one ear. Your Frenchie scratching his ears more than usual read more about this. Whilst they may give an indication, they should not be relied on to tell if a French Bulldog is deaf; you need to arrange a proper hearing test. It uses specialist hearing test equipment that is only available in a few select veterinarian practices. At this age, congenital deafness will have matured into a hearing loss condition. Both ears will be tested for hearing loss, the end result being a printed report with a graph and the hearing test results listed on it. The vet will explain whether this means your French Bulldog is deaf or has partial hearing loss. There are three main categories of hearing loss that are reported on: Bilateral Affected: the French Bulldog is completely deaf in both ears. Unilateral Affected: the Frenchie Bulldog is deaf in only one ear. Unaffected: the French Bulldog has hearing in both ears. Hearing tests for older Frenchies For older French Bulldogs with hearing issues there is a different hearing test available called the Threshold test. It still uses the BAER machine but instead tests volumes of frequency — very similar to a human hearing test in fact. Just like with the BAER testing, you will receive a printout and report which shows whether your French Bulldog is losing hearing or not. Hearing loss is very common in older dogs, but there are ways in which you can care for a French Bulldog with deafness which I will explain further down. Should you buy a deaf French Bulldog? Owning a completely deaf Frenchie will come with a lot of challenges. Deaf dogs are harder to train, will startle easier, and will have problems socialising with other dogs and your own household. Your Frenchie could be at risk when out in public places. Your Frenchie will be very hard to train. Your Frenchie might respond better to vibration rather than audio. Your Frenchie might have to learn to respond to body language instead. If you are buying from a breeder then ask for proof of a hearing test before you purchase. If you yourself are a Frenchie breeder, have both the male and female tested before breeding. This will reduce the risk of congenital French Bulldog deafness gene being passed down to the litter. Deaf Frenchies might find it hard to socialise with other dogs. How to care for a deaf French Bulldog If you do buy a deaf French Bulldog puppy or have an older dog who goes on to develop hearing problems then here are a few tips. You can buy longer leads for this purpose. Use your hands to signal to them and facial expressions. You can also use light or vibration, such as talking in a deeper voice. Train him to respond to touch signals. Keep them in a fenced off area in your yard or garden to prevent him from wandering off. Use a flashlight or a laser pen to get his attention and respond to you. Stomp your feet on the floor when you enter the room so not to startle him. Attach a note to his collar that says he is deaf in case he gets lost. Can you get dog hearing aids? Yes, there are dog hearing aids available. Many dogs will struggle to interpret the noise and they will need extensive training to use the device. What other breeds of dog are prone to deafness? Aside from French Bulldogs, hearing loss is also very prevalent and common in the following breeds. American Bulldog. Common health problems in French Bulldogs October 1, The French bulldog is a popular breed known for its large eyes, perky ears, and playful personality. Like many purebred dogs, they are prone to a few health problems of which owners should be aware. The French bulldog is a popular breed known for its large eyes, perky ears, and playful personality. Frenchies are gregarious, energetic animals that love people and get along well with other pets. But like many purebred dogs, they are prone to a few health problems of which owners should be aware. The list of potential allergens is long and can include inhaled allergens such as tree and grass pollen, mold spores, dust, feathers, smoke, and perfumes , contact allergens such as detergents, fabrics, cleaning products, and shampoos , and some foods or medicines. Signs that your French bulldog may have an allergy include itchy or irritated skin , runny eyes, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea, snoring from throat inflammation , and swollen paws. Commonly known as pinkeye, conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the outer layer of the eyeball and is common in both humans and pets. Frenchies are particularly prone to pinkeye, which often causes red or swollen-looking eyes and a sticky discharge from the affected area. Pinkeye could be caused by environmental irritants, chronic dry eye, or by a more serious underlying condition such as canine distemper. If your Frenchie shows symptoms of pinkeye, a visit to the vet is recommended. If bacterial infection is suspected, your vet can prescribe antibiotics, or if an allergy is the suspected cause, your vet can help identify the allergen responsible. French bulldogs are at greater risk for deafness than other breeds. Hearing loss may be complete, starting from birth, or may develop gradually. If you suspect your Frenchie is suffering from congenital deafness, your vet can perform something called a brainstem auditory evoked response BAER test. The BAER test is a quick min noninvasive test that uses electrodes to evaluate the ear canal, inner ear, and cranial nerve and brainstem function. As in humans, some instances of deafness in dogs may be addressed using cochlear implants. If your Frenchie is diagnosed with congenital deafness, ask your vet about available treatment options. Hip Dysplasia. Another condition common in French bulldogs is hip dysplasia—a condition in which the ball-and-socket joints of the hips are improperly formed, resulting in a laxness in the tendons holding the femur in place. Hip dysplasia is progressive , and if untreated can lead to decreased mobility, inability to jump or climb stairs, reluctance to exercise, and difficulty standing. Treatment for hip dysplasia may include physical therapy and aquatherapy, as well as dietary changes aimed at controlling obesity. If you suspect that your Frenchie is suffering from hip dysplasia, see your vet for a complete evaluation and advice on treatment options. In severe cases, surgery to repair or replace the hip joint itself may be necessary. Heat Stress. Like several snub-nosed breeds , French bulldogs are prone to heat exhaustion. Snub-nosed breeds like the Frenchie and the Pug typically have a harder time breathing and regulating body temperature than do their long-snouted relatives. For this reason, extra caution should be taken not to expose your animal to prolonged periods of extreme heat. Never leave your pet in a hot car, and if you plan to be outdoors with your pet, always provide a place with ample shade and water for your animal to relax. Signs of heat stress include excessive panting, blue or bright red gums, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, convulsions. If your pet displays any of these symptoms, get your animal to a cool place and call your vet at once. Here are tips on safely exercising your flat-faced dog. It was so obvious that this puppy was blue and it was the only one in the litter. It was already sold and so was I. I then met Dawn Malcolm as I was looking for a traditional colored show type stud male. Dawn shared with me that she has a solid blue male and had a strong love for the livers and blues too. That was 12 years ago and our friendship is still very strong. I am glad we joined the Yahoo email group as I met some great people who were as interested in sharing in the goals I have set forth expanding the blue gene pool. With the help of many friends I incorporated various GSD with the blue gene to start my own lines. Over the years all have proven to be a valuable asset not only because of their color but because of their various personalities, health and structure. Some needed physical traits improved, others needed tweaking in the personality department to be what I feel is an ideal companion bred GSD which is what most average families need. She is a blue brindle born here. Many of my others carry the blue gene. Tanzietu - is Tanzies blue fawn daughter, her father is Miner so she carries long coat and can carry liver from her father. She is a puppy and will be included in the program as she matures. How did blue get into the GSD gene pool? The color has been apart of the original gene pool from the start. The puppies born of a blue GSD that are expressing the color blue themselves are born a very striking shade of blue. Shades of blue Blue is a dilution of black. It is lighter than black, and in some cases, it is very apparent that they are still blue as adults. The puppies are born a very pretty shade of blue and many of them turn to almost like a steel gray black as adults. Others are a lighter shade of blue. None the less the gene responsible for blue in the GSD is the D gene. Again, blue is a dilution of black. Therefore blue GSD are unable to produce any black on the dog. Every where traditionally seen black is, is blue with the dog has the D gene. Including the nose leather, eye rims, lips, and paw pads will all be a dark shade of blue and not black. When puppies are young their eyes appear to be very brilliant blue as all puppies are born with blue eyes but they do change over to a light yellow wolf eye or even to an amber orange eye as they mature. Is your GSD blue or carry blue? Feel free to send me a picture of your puppy or dog you feel may be blue. Keep in mind blue is the color, the patterns can be solid, sable, saddle, with and without other patterns panda, brindle, white spotting ect.Do you want to know for sure if your GSD is blue or carries blue? There are several color testing companies out there and we have used a few different companies our selves. The most recent company we have used is Embark. Not only does it test for all colors, it screens for several genetic diseases all in one test. We will be using this on many of our dogs in the next year. Thank you Embark for creating such a valuable tool for breeding. Scroll through the albums and if you do not find what you are looking for please send me a message. Keep in mind you do not have to have a facebook page to see this page. This recessive gene dilutes any black pigment on the dog including coat color, nose leather, foot pads, toe nails, lips, etc. It also affects their eye color. Blue pups have a beautiful light gray coat as babies, as they age however is usually darkens up quite a bit, the ones that darken up are called "steel" blues. To the untrained eye, they can be mistaken for regular blacks. There is also "Powder" blues, they tend to lighten up in color and always stay a very noticeable gray color. Powder blues are not seen very often. A blue pup with sable markings We have a couple blues and a few dogs who carry the blue gene. We choose these dogs first and foremost because their temperament, structure and health aligns with the goals of our breeding program. A beautiful unique color is just icing on the cake of an already exceptional dog. Our non-traditional color lines have some of the highest hip ratings in the US! We have produced non-traditional colored GSDs that compete in obedience, agility, nose work, etc. I personally love the non-traditional colored German Shepherds. These colors are been in the breed since the beginning and our foundation girl Rose just happened to be a blue! Most of the questions are probably regarding the colors, so let me answer them. We will also touch on size, weight, some distinguishing characteristics, and why you should or should not own one. The difference is that one of the parents of a blue German shepherd had the recessive gene that caused the pigment responsible for the black color to be diluted into a lighter color. A blue German shepherd is actually gray with a bluish hue, but the eyes are piercingly light-blue. Blue German shepherd puppies are easy to spot among other colors, but the coat can drastically change once they are adults. However, there are older lines that are closer to the original German shepherd, like the working line used during the Second World War, that have slightly shorter coats and a straight back but retain the undercoat. These are more often associated with blue coat color simply because they have been selectively bred to preserve some of the traits. However, there are also show lines that produce blue puppies every blue moon. Read our article on all of the GSD colors you can imagine. The German shepherd male is usually twenty-four to twenty-six inches tall, reaching weights between sixty-five and ninety pounds. Females are slightly smaller at twenty-two to twenty-four inches tall and weigh fifty to seventy pounds. I think the most valuable trait of the blue GSD is the thrill of looking for it. They are extremely rare and thus valued as a gem among breeders. They usually cost a ton of money, and the stars have to align for you to find them at the exact moment you are looking for a dog. If you are looking for a dog that can perform almost any task given to it but want to avoid dogs with heart problems like the Great Dane or Doberman, your best bet is a blue GSD. They will outlive most other dogs in this category while looking like a million bucks. Conclusion Anyone who is feeling lucky should immediately check the websites of these blue German shepherd breeders. Finding a litter of standard colors or patterns is hard enough, let alone an unpredictable blue GSD puppy. The exclusivity of the blue GSD is fertile soil for scammers. Avoid websites that provide no photos, guarantees, references, or information other than the price and contact. The same goes for puppy mills. Do your research, and you will be safe. In this case, I did the research so you could enjoy the process of selection. Discover the online program that more than 57, dog owners have used to rapidly transform their dog into a well-behaved, obedient furry friend. It's true - there are German Shepherds that are blue. In fact, German Shepherd Dogs come in various colors and also in a lot of different color patterns too. Others say that the blue colour is simply a gene mutation, and as such the blue German Shepherds should never be bred from, and overtime the gene should be bread out of the species completely. The blue German Shepherd, technically, a diluted Black Shepherd with 2 recessive genes. The Dd dilution gene affects coat colour in the main, but can also change the colour of eyes and noses. All coat colours and patterns are controlled by a set or group of genes that work together. In standard German Shepherds you will see descriptions and breakdowns that speak of the A genes, which control the black and red colouring in the dog through the release of melanin, and this affects the generic base colour and variations. However, the colouring of the blue German Shepherd is controlled by a different gene, the D gene spoken of earlier. All genes come in pairs, and it takes the presence of the big D and little d pair to produce the blue German Shepherd. The big D produces full strength coat colour and is the dominant gene, and the little d produces a dilute colour, which is the recessive gene. For the Blue Shepherd to be created he needs two copies of the diluted recessive gene, one from each parent, in order to have the diluted blue fur. If both parents have blue fur color their offspring will have it also however it is also possible for the color to appear in regular black and tan German Shepherd Dogs if both parents have the recessive genes. In addition to the above, the Blue German Shepherd takes three variations in blue colour, they come in blue and black, blue and sable and blue and tan, and again it is all dependent on the mix of different genes. Additionally, the blue German Shepherd can also be a variety of lighter and darker blues. Steel blue is the darker shade, and powder blue is the lighter of the two. It can be difficult to identify a steel blue on his own, but when you stand him next to a black German Shepherd, you can easily tell the difference in colour. How do they look? If you've never seen one of these dogs just imagine that everywhere there is black on the GSD normally, that you now see kind of a dusty grey colour. In some cases the blue might look kind of dusty, like someone spilled flour on the dog's coat but then in other cases it might be more of a darker gunmetal colour. Although it is rare and frowned upon by the AKC don't let the blue colour scare you away. A healthy blue German Shepherd is a very handsome animal and has all the same loyal and intelligent traits as regular colored German Shepherds. Many owners who have an unfavourably coloured German Shepherd have suggested that their pups face colour discrimination in events even in competitions where color should not be judged. The males will weigh between 65 and 90 pounds, and they will measure 24 to 26 inches in height from paw to shoulder, also known as the withers. The females will weigh between 50 and 70 pounds and will measure 22 to 24 inches at the withers. Additionally, it is common for the blue German Shepherd to have lighter coloured eyes, such as light blue, golden brown or yellow compared to the darker eyes of normal colored German Shepherds. Again, this is controlled by the recessive genes explained above. Because of their appearance, the blue German Shepherd is often mistaken for a blue Malinois, or with yellow eyes can often look similar to a dark grey wolf. They are super affectionate with their immediate family and enjoy a cuddle on the sofa and lounging around home. The blue German Shepherd is known for their confident and courageous personality. If properly trained and socialized their natural guarding tendencies work great in a home environment. Blue German Shepherds can also be aloof with strangers, or outsiders of the pack if improperly socialized but if raised correctly they are lovely, loyal dogs. The blue German Shepherd, like any other German Shepherd, is a medium energy dog and requires up to 60 minutes of exercise a day. High intensity exercise that tests their mental abilities as well as their physical are their favorite. Your dog would also require mental stimulation throughout the day, such as playing interactive games with his you, patrolling the yard, or taking part in training sessions. Because of their guarding tendencies early socialization is key to a happy hound and household! They are working dogs, and they like to pull if they are not trained properly. We also recommend crate training from a young age. Unlike other breeds, such as the French Bulldog, the colour blue is not indicative of health issues or problematic personality traits. The diluted gene is often linked to health issues in other breeds, such as Colour Dilution Alopecia in Weimaraner, but the blue German Shepherd is not known to suffer any diluted colour related health issues. Simply put, the blue German Shepherd is simply a colour variation, and their health is exactly the same as a traditional coloured German Shepherd. Elbow and Hip Dysplasia is an abnormal formation in the elbow and hip joints which is prevalent in larger breeds of dogs. Over time this formation can cause pain in their joints and can often lead to crippling arthritis in older dogs. Because German Shepherds are susceptible to bloat, it is advised to spread food across several sittings during the day. The exact amount of food will vary on the size of your dog and their activity levels throughout the day. Grooming The blue GSD often has a medium length outercoat with a dense undercoat. Due to the thick undercoat, they are heavy shedders. To keep their coat nice throughout the year you will need to brush them 2 or 3 times a week. During shedding season you will need to brush them every day. You should wash your GSD every 6 to 8 weeks to keep the coat clean and help with shedding. Specialist dog shampoos and shedding products help make managing the coat easier. It is possible for blue German Shepherds to have a long coat but it is very rare. Because their colour is more on the rare side, you may end up paying a slightly higher premium for this colour of the breed. These dogs are rarer than their tan and black saddle siblings i. This can make it difficult to find one to buy. German Shepherds are larger dogs, and can have large litter sizes. With an average of eight puppies in a litter; a blue German Shepherd puppy may show up unexpectantly. If you would prefer to adopt, the German Shepherd Club of America has a list of available rescues and rescue centres all over the country. Adopting A Blue German Shepherd On the other hand, if you are considering rescuing a German Shepherd, then the American German Shepherd Rescue Association has listed rescue centres dedicated to this breed and you may find some blues that need a home. Finishing Up Blue German Shepherds make great family pets. They are fun, intelligent, trainable, affectionate, loyal and protective. If they are socialized from a young age, they are great with children and other pets and will be a lovely member of the family for years. Naturally, all dogs have their own quirks that make them unique, just like all humans, and a blue GSD will be no different. Generally, however, German Shepherds are intelligent and fun to be around and love to spend hours playing in the garden with their family. If you do adopt one of these beautiful pups then it might be wise to let your neighbours know so that they think you have a stray wolf in your yard! For more information about the blue German shepherds, you can consult different social networks of groups responsible for the upbringing and care of the GSD, like the American Blue Bay Shepherd Association. Sign up for promotions, news, discounts, and the chance to win prizes for you and your German Shepherd E-mail Address. When you are considering where to find blue-eyed German shepherd puppies for sale, you will want to consider your budget. Make sure your home is safe for your puppy. The puppy needs to interact with different dogs and humans every day and early. In case you have any questions regarding our German Shepherd puppies, or any questions regarding dogs generally, please get in touch with us. Puppies can be reserved beforehand. The puppy should be adequately socialized so it can easily come to be part of your loved ones. German Shepherd puppies for sale can be found on the web. The German Shepherd Dog is the most commonly recognized dog breed on earth. Some white dogs have a small bit of cream or little patches of tan. Although generally speaking you should examine the white German Shepherd dog as having the same health problems as GSDs generally speaking, there are a couple of hints that there might be a difference. But what do you know about German Shepherds? They are great companions to children and also ideal as watchdogs, and some even can detect explosives. You can always train your dog to fetch. He loves it when he has to go outside and fetch the ball. This can be quite stressful, but because of his short attention span and occasional laziness, you can make it fun. Then, with only a few minutes of training, you can teach him what to do when you throw the ball to him. You should get an older puppy from a breeder that is at least nine months old. During the breeding process, male and female dogs are put together so they could produce offspring to be bred. It is quite possible to find the puppies in crates in these shops. Make sure that they are kept as warm as possible during shipping so that they would be comfortable in the crate. If you are purchasing from a shoe shop, ask them how long they plan to store the puppy. The crate will make them feel safer as well as make them less stressed in the traveling process. Always remember to keep the puppy in the crate with you while traveling. However, if you want to travel with your puppy, please be aware that all animal laws vary from state to state and country to country. Never leave your puppy alone in the car, because you could easily fall asleep with them in the backseat. If you want to take your puppy with you, always bring a crate along to ensure that your puppy will be safe in your vehicle. Pups for sale usually arrive at the showroom on the same day. Just give them a warm bath and feed them. This should take only about an hour or two depending on how busy the showroom is. Then, the puppy should be outfitted with an identification collar and harness and will be ready to go out on the show floor in no time! Finding blue-eyed German shepherd puppies for sale is much easier now than it was in the past. That is because the market has become more competitive and that means that people are looking for more dogs. There are many breeds of dogs to choose from, but blue-eyed German shepherd puppies for sale are certainly no exception. Here are some tips on how to find your new dog. This may seem obvious, but if you are going to get a dog you want to be sure that it is going to be a long-term pet. Dogs also require a lot of exercise and time. A house pet is usually very adaptable to new situations. If you give a dog room to run around it can make a big difference in the way that he or she gets along with other animals in the household. Other dogs may need to be crate trained, so you will want to try to find a dog that can do this easily. It may take a while to teach a dog to just roll over and lie down to take a nap in a crate, but dogs need this to relax and they will thank you for taking the time to train them. A dog that is willing to sleep anywhere is a great choice. A great place to find adorable dogs is online. Many people like to find out about things before buying a puppy and that can save them a lot of money. Some great websites have blue-eyed German shepherd puppies for sale at reasonable prices. This is a wonderful idea for people who are just starting to breed dogs. You will be able to see what dogs are available and decide if you want to buy one. Some of these places have nice puppies and they might be exactly what you are looking for. In addition, you may be able to see if you like the particular dog and if you think it would be a good pet for you. Sometimes you will have to sacrifice the first puppy that you get, but that is okay because there are plenty of others waiting to be taken care of. A good idea is to check out all of the local shelters, as well as the dog supply stores and pet shops. You will find that your options for a blue-eyed German shepherd puppy are quite varied. The number of puppies available may be limited, but you should be able to find much more than what you are seeing in ads. Most likely, there is a breeder or rescue group that will help you find the perfect pup for you. If you are looking for a blue-eyed German shepherd puppy, the best place to look is online. You will have a better chance of finding the right dog for you if you try to go the route of online research rather than look at a store to see if the dog you are looking for is there. Share this:.

Then, they are retired to ensure that they have a happy and full life. We make the decision based upon your application responses, your interview and the temperament of the puppy. If you are interested in a certain gender we will accommodate your preference. But, if you're flexible on the gender, we have the opportunity Show More After careful consideration, we pick the puppy that will be best suited for your family. But, if you're flexible on the gender, we have the opportunity to find the best possible match for your family. We temperament test the litter around 7 weeks of age. As a hybrid dog, the Golden Irish will inherit the physical and behavioral traits of both its parent dog breeds, however, not all Golden Irish dogs will inherit the same characteristics even if from the same litter. It is recommended to familiarize yourself with both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter if you are planning on adopting a Golden Irish as the breed can have more characteristics of one parent breed than the other. Golden Irish are known for being very loyal and affectionate dogs with exceptional agility. They are very friendly and should make a wonderful companion or family dogs. Golden Irish are active dogs that require regular exercise to maintain their physical and mental well-being. Exercise is essential as it helps them burn off excess energy, maintain a healthy weight, strengthen their muscles and bones, improve their cardiovascular health, and prevent behavioral issues such as boredom and destructive behaviors. The intensity necessary may vary depending on their age, health, and lifestyle. Responsible dog owners should ensure that their furry friends get plenty of exercise to keep them healthy and happy. Intelligent and beautiful as the Irish Setter and loving and loyal as the Golden Retriever. Hybrid vigor, in a beautiful loving companion. Interestingly the cross is quite similar to early golden retrievers as seen in this painting. The Golden Retriever has been bred for lighter colors in recent years because this is favored by the AKC. Our Golden Irish puppies tend to be darker in color. How'd we start? Growing up my wife's family raised Pekingese. She loved their dogs and the litters of puppies that came and went. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. Cody and Mandy had their first litter of puppies in .The puppies were all healthy and delightful. The experience was just as my wife remebered as a child and she was happy that our children were able to enjoy the same experience. It was rewarding to place the puppies in wonderful homes. The pleasure and excitment the families portrayed as they picked up their puppy was addicting. The friendships we gained were rich. Ginger, trained by Josiah, was the cleverest dog we ever had. We were planning to breed Ginger with Cody. In the summer of Ginger came into heat so we would put Ginger and Cody in seperate kennels, on a cement slab, when we went to town. We were waiting for her to be in midcycle to breed her. I came home at dusk, one night, and let her out and she immediatly disappeard. We ran for a flashlight and found her in Big Red's Kennel. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. Through our hard won experience we are able to consistently breed Golden Irishes to our own very high standards. I recommend looking at the images page to see some of the stunning photos we have collected over the years. We have been raising Golden Retriever Irish Setter Hybrids for more than 15 years and have insight that only comes through experience. Packer Pictured above as an adult and a puppy Packer is one of our favorite puppies from our first litter. He went to a family in Alaska who were kind enough keep in contact and send us pictures. Packer and his family came to visit us in on our new property. We have been on the Blue Mountains above Weston, Oregon going on 7 years. This cross gives us a hybrid dog that has the best of both breeds. This is otherwise known as hybrid vigor. Our parent lines have all been tested to ensure that they are healthy. Since this cross is not a purebred it is referred to as a Golden Irish puppy, Irish Golden puppy or an Irish Retriever puppy. We have been a part of raising this breed for more than 15 years. We have concentrated our efforts on this cross to bring you a puppy from our home in northwestern Indiana to your home! Starting in , we began raising purebred Irish Setters. While not a cross we plan to make often, it is one that we plan to raise. The Irish Setters that we raise come from many generations of champion bloodlines who were show and bench. We are conveniently located in Indiana, about half-way between Chicago and Indianapolis. Generally, we use American Airlines out of Chicago. Our Golden Irish puppies live from coast to coast! We have Golden Irish puppies living in their forever homes from Washington D. We also have many living closer to home in Chicago, Illinois and the surrounding midwest! In other words, shipping our Golden Irish puppies has been a popular option especially for those who do not wish to make a long road trip to pick up their puppy. We at Golden Ridge Hi-Breds are comfortable with shipping our Golden Irish puppies via these professional pet carrying airlines. We are willing to arrange to ship your puppy to you, if this your best option. In order to give you the best of quality in socialization, we follow the socializing techniques that are taught by Jan Fennell in the Dog Listener. Golden Ridge Hi-Breds Offers.
There are many factors that affect how much water a dog drinks throughout the day. There are also many medical reasons dogs can have excessive thirst. Canned Food Diet Canned food contains more water than dry food, so dogs that eat canned food may drink less water. This is because they are getting a portion of their daily water intake from their food. They also tend to be more active and lose more water through vomiting or diarrhea. Geriatric dogs can also drink more or less due to cognitive dysfunction or medical issues. Medications Certain medications can cause increased thirst and urination. These medications include diuretics such as furosemide or torsemide , anti-seizure medications such as phenobarbital , and corticosteroids such as prednisone. Hot Climates Dogs that live in warmer areas can become dehydrated more easily, increasing their water intake requirements. Frequent Exercise or Increased Activity Dogs that exercise frequently will require more water to hydrate themselves. Puppies also might drink more water than adult dogs due to higher activity levels. Health Conditions Certain medical issues can lead to excessive thirst. The most common reasons include: Electrolyte Imbalances Sodium or salt imbalances can lead to increased thirst and urination in dogs. Sodium draws water to it, and the kidneys will not hold or store water appropriately if there is an imbalance of sodium and potassium in the water. Dehydration, high-sodium meals, certain toxins , and other medical conditions can cause electrolyte issues. Dehydration Heat, exercise, and illness can all cause dehydration and lead to water-seeking behavior. Signs associated with dehydration can include lethargy, tacky gums, ropy saliva, bright red gums , excessive panting , and skin tenting. Vomiting or Diarrhea These can lead to dehydration, causing a dog to drink more water. If the gastrointestinal signs are frequent, severe, or persistent, seek veterinary care. Kidney Failure Kidney failure or renal failure is a chronic progressive condition defined as the inability of the kidneys to efficiently filter waste products. As toxins filter out from the bloodstream, they draw excess water with them, which may lead to increased urination. This in turn causes dehydration and an increase in water intake. Kidney failure ranges in severity, depending on how advanced it is. In the early stages, only monitoring and diet change may be needed. For more severe kidney failure, hospitalization may be required. Diabetes Mellitus Diabetes is a disease where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body stops responding the insulin produced. This causes a rise in blood sugar glucose levels. The body tries to eliminate excessive sugar through the urine, and the glucose draws water with it. Increased thirst and urination are the first clinical signs of diabetes noted by dog owners. Untreated diabetes mellitus can lead to a potentially fatal condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetes Insipidus Diabetes insipidus is a rare condition in dogs causing excessive thirst and large amounts of urine. Despite drinking large amounts of water, these dogs can often become dehydrated from the amount of urine they are producing. Though frustrating, this condition does not require immediate medical therapy. This causes increased thirst and urination. Other clinical signs include a pot-belly appearance, panting, thin skin, hair loss, and increased hunger. It is often diagnosed by the presence of symptoms. Pyometra This life-threatening condition is an infection of the uterus in female dogs that have not been spayed. Dogs will often drink more water to compensate for the increase in urination. Pyometra often has other symptoms, such as pus originating from the vulva, fever, lethargy, changes in appetite, and vomiting. Pyometra is fatal if left untreated, due to the infection spreading throughout the body sepsis. Liver Infection Bacterial infection of the liver most commonly caused by infection with Leptospirosis leads to increased urine production and increased thirst. This infection is fatal if left untreated. Leptospirosis is passed through infected rodent urine and is most commonly found in stagnant water puddles or ponds. There is a vaccine that protects dogs against this infection. If your dog has been drinking a lot of water or been recently swimming in a pond or drinking out of rain puddles, and they are not up to date on their Leptospirosis vaccination, get them to a veterinarian as soon as possible for testing and treatment. Dogs will often drink water when they have an upset tummy. Though we are unsure if this is to give them relief or to induce vomiting, it occurs frequently. This can be secondary to many medical issues, including mild inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract gastroenteritis , pancreatitis , inflammatory bowel disease , foreign body obstruction , and cancers. These signs together can be caused by dehydration, allergies, pain, or even behavioral issues, including anxiety , stress, or cognitive dysfunction the dog version of dementia. Dogs that drink a lot of water will often urinate a lot. This is partially due to how the body processes water—such that if the dog is drinking a high volume of water, then a high volume of water is being processed in the kidneys, and a high volume of urine is produced. Dogs may excessively drink water at night for all of the above medical issues, but this can also be caused by: Dehydration Cognitive dysfunction High-sodium treats or food at night Not enough water available during the day, especially if a dog is crated during the day with no water bowl. Dry air—You may notice your dog drinks more at night when the heat goes on in your home. This is due to drying out of the air. Consider using a humidifier where your dog sleeps to help alleviate this behavior. When to Go to the Vet for Excessive Thirst in Dogs It can be difficult to know when to bring your dog to the veterinarian when it comes to excessive thirst. If excessive thirst is paired any of the following symptoms, then is it extremely important to get your pet evaluated as soon as possible: Vomiting. Increased water intake is often typical for growing puppies as their kidneys continue to develop. Because of this, it is important to provide access to fresh and clean water for your puppy. Still curious why your puppy drinks a lot of water? Read on as we discuss the normal water intake of puppies, why puppies tend to drink more water, and the risks associated with overdrinking! The amount of water a puppy needs can vary depending on factors such as their size, age, activity level, and the weather. For example, a pound puppy would require 5 to 10 ounces of water daily. As a result, they may have an increased thirst compared to adult dogs. During puppyhood, their kidneys cannot properly concentrate urine which leads to the increased frequency of urination until around 11 to 16 weeks of age. As their bodies grow, they also require water to support the development and proper functioning of their organs. Because of this, it may be difficult to keep your puppies properly hydrated. It is crucial to provide access to fresh, clean water at all times to ensure their hydration needs are met. While increased water intake is often considered normal for growing puppies, it can also be a sign of an underlying disease or health condition. Image Credit: marketlan, Shutterstock Risks of Drinking Too Much Water While staying hydrated is crucial for puppies, excessive drinking can pose risks to their health. One concern is the potential for overhydration, also known as water intoxication. This condition occurs when the concentration of sodium in the bloodstream becomes diluted, causing issues such as lethargy, vomiting, seizures, and even coma. When Is Overdrinking a Cause for Concern? However, certain situations may warrant closer attention. Additionally, if your puppy exhibits signs such as frequent urination, excessive panting, weight loss, or changes in behavior, these could be indicators of an underlying health issue that requires professional evaluation. Image Credit: Mihail Guta, Shutterstock Signs of Overhydration While most common owners monitor the dangers of dehydration, overhydration can be equally harmful and should be properly monitored as well. To help you recognize the signs of overhydration and excessive drinking, here are some common presentations to look out for: Lethargy or weakness. Their body is becoming low on water and they must drink to make up the losses. When they pant a lot, they lose water through evaporation. This water loss is physiologic and can be readily replenished by drinking. Excess water intake that goes beyond a normal amount, or that occurs without cause, may be a sign of disease. In a variety of conditions the body is not able to control water loss even at normal temperatures. This water loss must be replenished and so dogs drink a lot to find a balance. How much water intake is normal in a healthy dog? Generally, water intake will vary a little with diet. If dogs are fed wet food , they may drink less, while dogs that are fed dry food or salty treats must make up water intake and seem to drink more than expected. However, this water intake is still physiologically normal. In fact, increased intake is often a response to excess fluid loss in urine. If your dog is drinking excessively polydipsia it is possibly because he is losing excess amounts of water for any of a number of reasons. An uncommon cause of dogs drinking more is called psychogenic polydipsia. It is a behavioral condition with a physical manifestation of excess thirst. Primary polydipsia is used to describe excessive water drinking that is not due to illness or psychosis: bored puppies or water loving breeds may tank up on water occasionally or consistently. Sorting these out can be a real challenge for your veterinarian. Some medications , such as cortical steroids often have increased water intake as a side effect. How should increased thirst and drinking be managed? Drinking excessive amounts of water often is associated with increased urination. While drinking a lot of water is a sign of health problems, increased urination can be a real problem for you to live with since affected dogs often urinate inappropriately. The first and most important step in addressing excessive drinking is to diagnose and confirm the underlying condition with your veterinarian. Many of the conditions associated with excess thirst are very serious and must be addressed as soon as possible:. Signs of dehydration in dogs. The average medium sized dog will drink around half a gallon of water a day. Water intake is a good indicator of overall health and gives early warning signs of certain medical conditions. It is important to know what is normal for your Labrador and what to look out for when they start drinking more or less than usual. However, our lives can get busy, and sometimes, we might not notice a change in drinking behavior. This can be done by filling up their water bowl to the same level at the same time each day. Then, notice how much is left when you go to refill it the next day. Checking the water level at the same time each day will give you an accurate representation of how much your dog drinks. As a rough guideline, normal water intake for a dog is around an ounce per pound 50 mL per kg of body weight per day. That means that a pound 30 kg Labrador would drink approximately half a gallon 1. What Makes Labradors Drink More? There are several factors that can affect the normal water intake mentioned above, including the following. Diet Your Labrador always needs fresh water available no matter what their diet; however, how much they drink will depend on the type of food they eat. Dogs that eat predominantly dry food and kibbles require more water than dogs on a wet food diet. It is perfectly normal for a Labrador or any dog on a canned or raw diet to drink less water than one on an exclusively dry food diet. Weather Water helps regulate body temperature. Dogs pant to cool themselves down by exhaling and releasing water through respiration. To compensate for this release of water, your Labrador will drink more in warmer weather. Activity Level When we exercise, we lose water through sweating and tend to drink more to make up for it. Dogs also require rehydration after exercise since they will have panted more than normal to help themselves cool down. If your Labrador naturally has high energy and activity levels, they will require more water than a couch-potato pup. Medications and Supplements Many common medications and supplements have side effects that may cause changes in daily water intake. Common anti-inflammatories, heart medications, and seizure medications can all lead to increased thirst and urination. It is important to be aware of these potential side effects and ask your veterinarian what to expect. My Labrador Is Drinking More than Normal When a dog is drinking more than usual, the first step is to rule out any obvious external factors as mentioned above. While you may think that drinking lots of water is pretty harmless, too much of anything is bad, including water. Excess water consumption can have a sudden onset and can be life threatening. By monitoring your Labradors water intake regularly, you can judge subtle changes and be aware of when to contact your veterinarian. My Labrador Is Drinking Too Much There are several things to look for if you suspect your Labrador may be drinking too much, possibly leading to overhydration. These include loss of coordination and staggers, lethargy and nausea, bloat and vomiting, dilated pupils and pale gums, and excessive drooling. If left to develop, these signs can lead to difficulty breathing and collapse. Dogs that spend a lot of time in or around water may be drinking from other sources or consuming water incidentally. If your dog plays in water, they may be consuming water while fetching items or biting at the water. Similarly, if they like to be sprayed or drink from a hose, consider that water intake when evaluating their overall consumption. My Labrador Is Drinking Too Little If your Labrador suddenly decreases their water consumption, they are at risk of becoming dehydrated. Just like with drinking too much water, not drinking enough water will cause harmful imbalances in the body. Water is vital for many functions, such as carrying nutrients throughout the body, aiding in digestion, and removing toxins from the system. Dehydration ultimately causes essential organs such as the kidneys and liver to stop functioning properly. If left in this state for too long, there can be irreversible damage to these organs. Signs of Dehydration in Dogs There are two easy ways to keep an eye on your Labradors hydration levels at home. It is beneficial to do these tests on your healthy Labrador so that you are aware of their baseline. In a healthy dog, after the skin is lifted it should snap back to its original position almost instantaneously. The longer the delay, the more dehydrated your dog is. Mucous Membranes The mucous membranes include the eyes, nose and mouth. They also serve as an indicator of adequate hydration levels. If he is dehydrated, the gums may appear pale and feel dry and tacky when touched. If your dog tends to not drink enough and your vet has given her a clean bill of health, here are a few ideas to encourage drinking. Place her water bowl in places she likes to be. Praise her when she drinks water. Add chicken or bone broth to her water, but be sure to keep it fresh. Consider adding wet food to her diet. Soak dry food with water or broth before feeding. Consider getting a pet drinking fountain to make it fun be sure to keep it clean.

Should you notice your dog acting disoriented, begin to shiver during your walk, has difficulty walking, or is lethargic, it is time to get him home immediately. If left out in the cold too long, your GSD will become sluggish and ultimately unresponsive. Lasting injury or death can result from untreated hypothermia. Dogs love rolling around in the snow, and some breeds like Labradors love a dip in icy water. But if your dog gets wet, he will be more susceptible to hypothermia. As German Shepherds cannot tolerate the cold as well as the Great Pyrenees or Huskies who are acclimatized to colder temperatures, it is best to avoid winter water time. If your German Shepherd is hypothermic, you will need to warm him by: Getting him inside a warm place Wrapping him in blankets or coats warm these on a radiator first if you can Call your veterinarian Are German Shepherds Good in Hot Weather? For greater insight, check out this article, Can German Shepherds Overheat? Heat Tolerance Explained. German Shepherds, like all dogs, cool themselves through panting. Heat loss through sweating from the paw pads and nose is minimal. Nonetheless, panting loses its effectiveness as the temperature rises. On humid days, dogs must pant even more vigorously. Our dogs feel more uncomfortable on humid, steamy days, just like we do. Thicker coats, like that of the German Shepherd, decrease heat loss from the skin. Without proper attention, your dog may face heatstroke at higher temperatures than other dogs can tolerate. This clever multi-tiered fountain is the perfect size for German Shepherds. The free-flowing water lures your dog to drink more, and the continual water circulation keeps the water fresh and clean. Check out my German Shepherd, Willow, in the below photo. She loves sunbathing — but only for a few minutes! You should never shave your German Shepherd in the summer or at any time of year, for that matter. Your dog can also suffer from red and inflamed skin that becomes painful and easily irritated. Consistent exposure to direct sunlight is also associated with skin cancer. Besides, your dog is programmed to blow his undercoat shed heavily in summer to regulate airflow and enhance cooling. A shaved dog no longer has that cooling system and is more likely to suffer heatstroke. Signs of heatstroke in German Shepherds are: Vigorous panting or labored breathing Dehydration and deep red gums Trembling, disorientation, or seizures Salivating or foaming at the mouth Vomiting and bloody diarrhea Collapse or unconsciousness If you notice these signs in your dog, get him to a shaded and cooler temperature. Pour cool tap water not cold to avoid shock over your dog and let him drink small amounts of cool water. Towels can be placed beneath him in minor cases, and consult your vet. On hot days, walk your dog early morning and late evening when it is cooler. I get my German Shepherd out at 6. I usually take Willow to a nearby wood where the trees shade her. I also take a dog water bottle like the Tuff Pupper PupFlask from Amazon to ensure I always have emergency hydration when my dog needs it. This flask is a great size, is quick and easy to use, and has a cool reversible leaf-shaped bowl that lays flat over the bottle when not in use. My German Shepherd Willow cooling off in the river. Senior German Shepherds and Temperature German Shepherds become more sensitive to hot and cold weather as they age as they have a reduced capacity to maintain their body temperature. Temperatures your dog enjoyed while young may be too much for them as a senior. Dogs lose the ability to control their body temperature as they age. They are more vulnerable to hypothermia in the winter and heatstroke in the summer. Additionally, if your senior GSD develops arthritis common in older dogs , they will feel discomfort during cold or damp weather. The more sedentary senior lifestyle also means many older dogs are prone to weight gain. An obese dog is at greater risk of heat stroke and heart conditions. German Shepherd Puppies and Temperature German Shepherd puppies are more sensitive to temperature due to their smaller size. GSD puppies have boundless energy. If given a chance, they will play in the sun until they overheat. While puppies love playing and rolling around in the snow, they can quickly start to shiver if exposed to the cold for too long. You will need to watch your pup closely and get him warm at the first signs of hypothermia. Final Thoughts German Shepherds can tolerate high or low temperatures for a short while but will do better in cool to moderately warm weather due to their thick double coat. Ensure your dog has plenty of water when it is hot, and look out for shivering when the temperature drops. While you can keep your German Shepherd in an outside kennel in a temperate climate, your dog will be much happier indoors with the family. The ideal temperature for a German Shepherd and the perfect environment is in your house. Related Posts You May Like:. Breed Info One of the reasons why German Shepherds became among the most popular breeds in the world is that they can tolerate all sorts of climates. In fact, early GSDs were bred to herd sheep even in intensely cold weather. Do German Shepherds Get Cold? Just like any other breed, German Shepherds do get cold. But thanks to their robust bodies and double coats, they tolerate low temperatures better than most breeds. In fact, many GSDs love playing in snow. Whereas, the outer coat act as guard hairs to repel moisture and keep the cold from reaching the body. It is important to note, however, that the density of undercoats differ between individual dogs. Body Structure German Shepherds have robust bodies that allow them to stay comfortable in low temperatures. They have a good ratio of muscle and fat to keep their vital organs insulated. Additionally, dogs in general have a remarkable paw structure, which features a network of blood vessels that ensures blood is warmed up before it is pumped back throughout the rest of the body. Additionally, many GSDs will instinctively engage in physical activity when the weather gets cold in an effort to keep their bodies warm. How cold is too cold for a German Shepherd to be outside? Besides, they benefit tremendously from the physical and mental stimulation. There are several factors that could make your German Shepherd less tolerant of the cold. These include: Age German Shepherd puppies have not had the chance to develop their robust bodies and lush coats, and so will have a lower tolerance for frosty weather. Health If your dog is malnourished or has an underlying health condition, they might not have enough fat and flesh to insulate their vital organs. It might not take much to make them feel too cold. Undercoat Not all GSDs have thick or woolly coats. Dampness Guard hairs can only do so much. Ways to Tell if Your Dog is Cold The more time you spend bonding with your dog, the better connection you have. When dogs shiver, their muscles use stored energy to create small involuntary movements in an effort to generate warmth. Needing to Curl Up At the onset of cold weather, many dogs will try to become more active to keep their bodies warm. But eventually, they will instinctively try to preserve their energy and keep warm by curling up. They do so by burrowing or nesting, ideally in proper beddings. Even when standing, they will try to preserve body heat by hunching their back and tucking their tail in. Showing Signs of Stress When they become uncomfortable in the cold, dogs will exhibit signs of anxiety. German Shepherds are particularly vocal, so they might howl , bark , and whine. Lethargy As their bodies focus on keeping their vital organs warm, dogs often become lethargic when they feel too cold. This might be accompanied by dilated pupils. Ways to Keep Your Dog Warm in Colder Weather As winter approaches, a good rule of thumb is to keep your dog indoors unless supervised for potty and play. Generally, these are what you need to keep them safe and comfortable in cold weather: Keep them indoors. The most important thing to keep your dog safe in frigid temperatures is to let them stay indoors. Always make sure they have proper shelter than protects them from snow, wind, and rain. Ensure access to fresh water. Proper hydration will help your dog tolerate the chilly weather. Provide proper beddings. Give your dog thicker blankets so they can bundle up when they want to. You can even roll the blankets up and shape them in a circle so your dog can nest. An elevated bed keeps their body further away from the cold as they sleep. Increase their food servings. Just being in frosty weather makes your dog use up more energy. So, feed them more food to keep their bodies from using their fat and muscle stores for energy. Protect their paws. Additionally, if you have a long-coated GSD, make sure you keep their paws trimmed short since their fur can soak up dampness from the ground and make them more susceptible to hypothermia. Get some clothes. Dog clothes are generally unnecessary for GSDs unless temperatures reach critically low levels or your dog is particularly sensitive to the cold. In those cases, additional insulation through dog sweaters or vests will be helpful. Avoid bathing. Instead, brush them often to remove dirt and debris, remove loose hair, and keep their skin and coat healthy. What to do if you Suspect your Dog has Hypothermia Hypothermia is a serious condition caused by exposure to low temperatures. It could lead to heart failure, comatose, or even death. If a vet is not immediately available, take the following steps: Step 1: Dry them up. Soak up what you can with a towel and use a hairdryer to dry them up and give them warmth at the same time. Step 2: Keep them warm. Step 3: Check their temperature. Otherwise, watch them closely as they warm up. Step 4: Monitor their progress. Check their temperature every 10 minutes. As soon as their body temperature returns to normal, you can remove the heat but keep them bundled up. Final Thoughts The bodies of German Shepherds are built to tolerate the cold much better than other breeds. However, they do still feel cold and excessive exposure to low temperatures still poses severe danger. Listed here are some tips to help your dog through the harsh winter. Keep your GSD well-groomed and brushed. Keep them indoors when the temperature is frigid outside. If your dog lives outside, consider investing in an insulated dog house with a sloped roof and raised floor. A sloped roof helps prevent the water from seeping inside the house, while a sloped floor helps to shield your dog from chilly ground. Plus, depending on how extreme the weather is, you may also need to attach a heater to the dog house. Provide warm beddings. Give your dog a cozy blanket to snuggle up to in their bed. It will be helpful to shape the blanket like a donut so that your dog can nest down inside the blanket comfortably. If your dog needs more heat, you can also consider inserting heated dog pads inside their house. Make sure they have constant access to plenty of fresh water to drink from. Just like their hoomans, dogs can become hydrated in cold weather. Increase their food intake. You should feed your dog more foods, preferably foods high in protein, to keep them warm during cold months. Get them some clothes. Additional clothing, such as a sweater or coat, can be beneficial, especially to puppies or geriatric dogs, to limit their exposure to extreme temperature. Get them some boots. Dry them thoroughly. When they return from a walk, in addition to wiping off their paws, be sure to towel dry them as much as possible, and if needed, use a hairdryer as well. Avoid bathing. In the winter, try to avoid bathing more than once every two weeks. For in-between bathing, you can use waterless pet shampoo to keep your dog looking sharp and smelling good. When bathing your dog, do it in enclosed and warm places like a garage, and dry them off thoroughly after. Leaving your dog unattended in a car for too long on a cold day can wind him up in potentially cold-related issues like hypothermia. Please note that the combination of fainting, sudden lethargy, and blue gums and tongue are serious indications of hypothermia. In the meantime, do the following first aid steps: Step 1: dry them up with a towel and hair dryer. Step 2: bundle them up in thick blankets. Step 3: place a hot water bottle in their belly. Step 4: monitor their temperature. Step 5: continue monitoring their temperature. Once their body temperature returns to normal, you can remove the hot water bottle but keep them bundled up. Every dog has a different tolerance for the cold. Read on to find out more. Long-haired GSDs can withstand even colder temperatures. Yet, factors like age, health conditions, activity level, and weight may also affect their ability to stand the cold weather. Unlike some breeds who were bred to live and sleep in the snow, like Sebastian Huskies, Saint Bernards, and Malamutes, German Shepherds were bred to live and work with people and livestock. The fact is, the German Shepherd is a breed of dog that has a double coat. This means that there are two layers of fur. Their outer coat is long and coarse, and it is there to protect the dog against snow and ice. The undercoat is thick and soft, and it insulates the dog against cold in the winter as well as heat in the summer. Many owners have shared that their GSDs literally love the snow. Their pooches were fine even after being out in the snow for one to two hours. And when they are cold, they will come inside. Depending on their coat length, age, weight, lifestyle, and diet, German Shepherds will do alright even below zero, as long as they are on the move and are not left outside for a prolonged period of time. How cold is too cold for your German Shepherd? If the temperature gets too far below, your dog will have trouble regulating its temperature. However, there are a few exceptions to this. For example, if your pup is a long-haired German Shepherd with a thick fur coat, eats a healthy diet, or is muscular, he may be able to withstand even lower temperatures. How long can your German Shepherd stay in below zero temperature? Your GSD can go outside for 15 to 20 minutes at below-freezing temperatures for potty breaks. All dogs also have ways to retain heat. For one, their bushy tail can be used to cover the face and keep it warm while sleeping. Also, as a German Shepherd curls up, he retains heat better while sleeping. Raising the coat hairs also helps to trap heat and keep the body warm. These factors include: Age German Shepherd puppies have a thin fur coat that makes winter very hard on them. Their muscles are also underdeveloped, making it hard to regulate body heat well. Feeding your puppy a highly nutritious diet and giving them a warm coat can help them stay warm during winter. On the other hand, older dogs may also have trouble regulating their body heat as well. Over time, older dogs lose their hair and muscles, and their immune systems may dwindle as they age. It is usually best to not take a senior German Shepherd into the severe cold too often. In case you live in an area with a very cold winter, you may keep your young or old dog warm with a vest while going outside. Activity Level If a German Shepherd is highly active and always on the move, he can keep himself warm on a chilly day just by staying busy. This should not be a problem if your dog is healthy. They can run for at least several hours a day for sure. This is a dog who is bred to go all day regardless of the temperature, and all that activity helps to keep your Shepherd warm. Weight If your German Shepherd is slim and seems to be losing weight, this means he may not have enough muscle and body fat to keep him warm. Both of these are important to maintain heat. In really cold weather conditions, the body fat can be converted to extra energy to keep your pup warm. Protein from meat and salmon is a calorie-dense nutrient. And many of the high-protein diets are extremely high in calories and can lead to being overweight. Health conditions If your dog eats a balanced diet and has enough physical and mental stimulation during the day, he is a happy and healthy dog that can stay active to keep himself warm in cold weather. However, when your dog is sick, their bodies automatically take extra energy and direct it toward healing. This leaves very little energy left to help the dog stay warm. This is why it is best to keep any sick German Shepherds inside where it is nice and warm. What to look for when your dog reacts to colder temperatures? Again, not all German Shepherds have the same ability to regulate their body heat temperatures, and they may struggle with colder temperatures. If it seems like your dog is shivering when it gets colder, you need to keep them inside or give them some added layers of protection. Simple cold-weather caring tips for dogs You may assume that your Shepherd will be able to handle the cold with no problem. However, even if your dog seems to be having a great time in the snow, there are some things that you can do to make it safer and easier for them: Paw Balm Paw balm has been used throughout history to protect the paws of dogs who have to track over ice and snow. A German shepherd can tolerate chilly temperatures for a long time or freezing temperatures for a short period. We Recommend The coat will keep your dog warm and cozy, so that they can play outside or sleep comfortably throughout the day even in freezing weather. A Sable German shepherd has longer and fluffier hair than the average German shepherd , which will be able to withstand colder temperatures easier. On the other hand, like most breeds, they can also become acclimated rather quickly to the changing seasons. Age Due to their body mass and size, puppies cannot tolerate cold temperatures like adults. On the other hand, a senior german shepherd temperature will not withstand cold weather as easily as an adult because they cannot regulate their temperature as they age. During these conditions, your German shepherd should avoid going outside as much as possible to decrease the risks of hypothermia and getting sick. Overall Health If your German shepherd eats a well-balanced diet and generally stays healthy, it will be able to withstand cold temperatures longer, however, if your dog is sick or has a health condition. German shepherds are very capable of coping with extreme weather conditions based on their muscle metabolism, paw-blood circulation, energy level, and body structure. Thin and Dense Double Coat German shepherds with shorter hair tend to have a thin layer of fur as their undercoat. Their undercoat functions perform well in extreme cold and hot temperatures. Muscle Metabolism German shepherds can manage their body heat well due to their high muscle mass. Muscle mass maintains high metabolic rates, which allows for an overall high body temperature. Paw Blood Circulation German shepherd paws develop a large amount of blood supply which helps them with circulation. Their heavy padded paws are why they can tolerate walking on sweltering pavement and in the freezing snow. Although they may seem like they have loads of energy playing in the snow or running around the yard, they may not realize they are cold. Pay close attention to their body language. Instead, allow them to get used to the cold with small doses every time you go out with them. Burrowing — is not just a playful method to increase activity. Stress signs — barking, whining , and even howling mean that your dog is showing signs of anxiety. Hunched back or tucked tail — usually happens after they have made attempts to get warm and failed. If your GSD stays out any longer in the cold, they will get sick and develop hypothermia. Pale or Bluish gums — a definite sign of hypothermia. Signs of Hypothermia include: Fur and skin are frozen to the touch Sleepy or lethargic behavior Body temperature lower than 95F Slowed heart rate Labored breathing and trouble walking Sometimes coma While signs of hypothermia may not be present immediately, you should always watch your dog after being out in the cold. The best thing you can do if you suspect your dog has hypothermia is to use warm blankets that just come out of the dryer and place hot-water bottles in and around their bedding. Call a vet immediately after you have warmed them and seek professional guidance. Never put hot-water bottles directly on your pet as you may risk burning them. Coats are best for senior dogs, sick dogs, and puppies. You might also consider buying durable dog boots. Keep walks shorter and ensure your home is warm for when you get back. During bathroom breaks, keep their fur dry as soon as they come inside. Here are some common questions asked by other German shepherd owners. Do German Shepherds Like the Cold? Do German Shepherds Like Snow? Yes, German shepherds love snow. A German shepherd in the snow is like a toddler at a candy store. What is the Perfect Temperature for a German Shepherd? In the summer, temperatures above 95F are too hot. Can German Shepherds Live Outside? Even though the German shepherds are very affectionate and family-oriented dogs, they can surely live outside. Especially if the shelter is provided to keep them safe from windchill and other weather conditions. After ten to fifteen minutes in below-freezing temperatures, your German shepherd should come inside to get warmed back up. The best way to tell whether your dog is managing is by paying attention to their body language. German shepherds are drawn to warmth like humans , so it can be irresistible not to want to curl up in front of a hot burning fireplace. However, fireplaces are dangerous and can cause burns at an unsafe distance. Keep your GSD at least five feet away from the fireplace at all times. Does a GSD have a low surface area? Yes, the GSDs have a low surface area. It means that they lose less heat through their skin. German shepherds are large breeds with a fairly regulated internal heat system. Their paws circulate blood the most, which helps as it will either help them stay cool or warm during sweltering and cold weather. Also, take note of the conditions the weather has outside. These adorable little pups are known for their charming personalities and irresistible squishy faces, but just how many of them can one Frenchie mama have? In this article, we'll explore the fascinating world of French Bulldog litters and answer the burning question on every dog lover's mind: how many puppies can a French Bulldog have? Get ready to unleash your curiosity and let's dive in! On average, a French Bulldog can have a litter size of between 2 to 4 puppies. However, it's not uncommon for some Frenchies to have larger litters of up to 5 or 6 puppies, while others may only have a single pup. French Bulldogs are known for being small, compact dogs with a big personality, and when it comes to their litters, they tend to have a smaller number of puppies compared to other breeds. There are several factors that can influence the size of a French Bulldog's litter, including genetics, age, and overall health. For instance, younger Frenchies and those in peak physical condition tend to have larger litters than older or less healthy dogs. It's worth noting that while having a larger litter may seem exciting, it can also come with some challenges. French Bulldogs, like many small breeds, can experience difficulties during labor and delivery, so it's important for breeders and pet owners to work closely with a veterinarian to ensure a safe and healthy birth for both the mother and her puppies. On average, a French Bulldog can have up to 4 litters in their lifetime, with each litter having between 2 to 4 puppies. This means that a Frenchie can have anywhere from 8 to 16 puppies over the course of their breeding years. However, it's important to note that breeding a dog should be done with careful consideration and only under the guidance of a responsible breeder or veterinarian. Overbreeding can be harmful to a French Bulldog's health, and can also contribute to the problem of overpopulation in the dog breeding industry. It's also important to consider the ethical implications of breeding dogs, including the responsibility of finding suitable homes for each puppy and ensuring that they receive proper care throughout their lifetime. Factors That Affect the Litter Size There are several factors that can affect the litter size of a French Bulldog, including: Age: As a general rule, younger female dogs tend to have larger litters than older dogs. This is because their reproductive systems are more efficient when they are in their prime. Health: A French Bulldog's overall health can play a significant role in the size of their litters. Dogs that are in good physical condition are more likely to have larger litters than those who are not. Genetics: The genetics of the dog can also impact litter size. Some dogs may have a genetic predisposition to smaller litters, while others may be more likely to have larger litters. Nutrition: A well-balanced diet is essential for a French Bulldog's health and can also impact litter size. A dog that is malnourished or underweight may have smaller litters or may experience complications during pregnancy. Breeding frequency: French Bulldogs that are bred too frequently may experience smaller litters due to a decline in fertility. It's important to give the female dog enough time to recover and regain their health between breeding cycles. Breeding method: The method used for breeding can also affect the litter size. Artificial insemination may result in smaller litter sizes than natural breeding. Hormone Imbalance Hormone imbalances can also be a factor that affects the litter size of French Bulldogs. Hormones play a critical role in the reproductive system of dogs, and any imbalances can lead to reduced fertility and smaller litter sizes. One hormone that is particularly important in female dogs is progesterone. Progesterone levels rise during the second half of a dog's reproductive cycle, and they play a key role in preparing the uterus for pregnancy. If progesterone levels are too low, the uterus may not be ready to support a litter, resulting in smaller litters or even infertility. Another hormone that can affect litter size is luteinizing hormone LH. LH is responsible for triggering ovulation, and if levels are too low, ovulation may not occur, leading to smaller litters or infertility. In addition to these hormones, imbalances in other hormones such as estrogen, follicle-stimulating hormone FSH , and thyroid hormones can also affect a French Bulldog's reproductive system and ultimately impact litter size. If a hormonal imbalance is suspected, a veterinarian can perform tests to determine the levels of various hormones and recommend appropriate treatments or management strategies to support the dog's reproductive health. Age Female dogs are most fertile between the ages of 2 and 5 years old, and during this time, they are more likely to have larger litters. As dogs age, their fertility decreases, and they may experience smaller litter sizes or infertility. It's important to note that breeding French Bulldogs before they are fully mature can also have negative consequences. Breeding dogs that are too young can result in smaller litter sizes, and it can also put the mother and puppies at greater risk for complications during pregnancy and delivery. On the other hand, breeding dogs that are too old can also increase the risk of complications and smaller litter sizes. Female dogs that are past their prime reproductive years may have a reduced number of eggs, and their uterus may not be as capable of supporting a large litter. In general, the ideal age for breeding French Bulldogs is between 2 and 5 years old, when the dog is in optimal reproductive health. However, it's important to work closely with a veterinarian or responsible breeder to ensure that the dog is physically and emotionally ready for breeding, regardless of their age. Genetics The number of puppies that a Frenchie has in a litter can be influenced by the genetics of both the female and male dogs involved in breeding. In general, large dog breeds tend to have larger litters than smaller breeds, and this can be reflected in the litter size of mixed-breed puppies. However, French Bulldogs are a relatively small breed, and their litter sizes are typically smaller than those of larger breeds. The genetics of the female dog can also play a significant role in litter size. Some French Bulldogs may be more predisposed to having smaller litters due to their genetics. In contrast, other dogs may be more likely to have larger litters. Genetic testing can help breeders to identify dogs with optimal reproductive health and litter size. Health A Frenchie that is in good physical condition is more likely to have larger, healthier litters than a dog that is not. Dogs that are malnourished, underweight, or have an underlying health condition may have reduced fertility, which can lead to smaller litters or infertility. Proper nutrition, exercise, and regular veterinary care can help to ensure that a French Bulldog is in good health and ready for breeding. It's also important to note that French Bulldogs, like all breeds of dogs, can experience reproductive health issues that can impact their litter size. Conditions such as infections, tumors, or abnormalities in the reproductive system can reduce fertility and result in smaller litters. Regular veterinary checkups and reproductive health screenings can help to identify and address these issues early on, improving the chances of a successful breeding. In addition to physical health, a Frenchie's mental and emotional wellbeing can also play a role in their reproductive health. Dogs that are stressed, anxious, or in poor mental health may experience reduced fertility, and this can impact their litter size. It's important to ensure that the dog's environment is safe, comfortable, and conducive to their overall health and wellbeing. The process of breeding for these colors can be complex, and it often involves breeding dogs that carry specific color genes. For instance, a blue merle French Bulldog may carry two copies of the dilute gene, while a lilac Frenchie may carry one copy of the dilute gene and one copy of the chocolate gene. Breeding for exotic colors or even fluffy coats can also involve the use of artificial insemination or the use of stud dogs that are carriers of the desired color genes. However, it's important to note that breeding for these colors can come with some risks. French Bulldogs that are bred specifically for their color may be more prone to health issues, including skin problems and eye disorders. In addition, the popularity of exotic colors like the platinum coloring has led to an increase in the demand for these dogs, which has resulted in some breeders engaging in unethical breeding practices, such as inbreeding or breeding for extreme physical characteristics. These practices can be harmful to the health and welfare of the dogs and can result in a range of health issues. It's important to work with a responsible breeder who prioritizes the health and wellbeing of the dogs above all else. Breeding for extremely small size can increase the risk of a number of health problems in French Bulldogs, including respiratory issues, hip dysplasia, and spinal problems. Additionally, breeding micro French Bulldogs with a focus on appearance rather than health and temperament can lead to a range of serious health problems that can negatively impact both the mother and the puppies. Responsible breeders prioritize the health and well-being of the breed and carefully select breeding pairs based on factors such as health, temperament, and genetic diversity. Breeding French Bulldogs for extremely small size or for specific coat colors can compromise their health and result in a host of problems that can be detrimental to their overall well-being. Female French Bulldogs typically reach sexual maturity between 6 and 12 months of age. However, it's important to note that while a female dog may be physically capable of breeding at this age, it's generally recommended to wait until the dog is at least 2 years old before breeding. Breeding a Frenchie too early can have negative consequences, including a higher risk of complications during pregnancy and delivery. Additionally, dogs that are bred too young may not be emotionally or mentally mature enough to handle the demands of pregnancy and motherhood. French Bulldogs, like many brachycephalic short-nosed breeds, are at increased risk for complications during natural birth due to the shape of their skulls and bodies. The breed's unique anatomy can make natural birth dangerous and potentially life-threatening for both the mother and her puppies. French Bulldogs have a relatively large head and narrow pelvis, which can make it difficult for puppies to pass through the birth canal. This can result in prolonged labor and increased risk of fetal distress, stillbirth, or death of the mother. In addition to the breed's physical anatomy, French Bulldogs can also be prone to certain health issues that can increase the risk of complications during natural birth. For instance, obesity, poor nutrition, and other health issues can increase the risk of complications during pregnancy and delivery. For these reasons, many veterinarians and responsible breeders recommend that French Bulldogs give birth via cesarean section C-section. A C-section is a surgical procedure that involves delivering the puppies via incision in the mother's abdomen, and it can greatly reduce the risks associated with natural birth. The First Month of French Bulldog Pregnancy During the first month of French Bulldog pregnancy, the fertilized eggs travel down the Fallopian tubes and implant in the lining of the uterus. At this point, it can be difficult to detect pregnancy as there are no external signs. However, some dogs may exhibit subtle changes in behavior or appetite. It's important to ensure that the dog is getting proper nutrition and exercise during this time, as this will support the health of both the mother and the developing fetuses. It's also a good time to schedule a veterinary checkup to confirm the pregnancy and monitor the dog's health. The Second Month of French Bulldog Pregnancy By the second month of French Bulldog pregnancy, the fetuses have developed significantly and are about the size of walnuts. The dog's abdomen may begin to swell, and she may exhibit signs of morning sickness or fatigue. During this time, it's important to continue to provide the dog with proper nutrition and exercise, and to monitor her health closely. The veterinarian may recommend additional testing, such as an ultrasound, to monitor the health and development of the fetuses. The Third Month of French Bulldog Pregnancy During the third month of French Bulldog pregnancy, the fetuses continue to develop rapidly, and their organs and body systems begin to mature. The dog's abdomen will be noticeably swollen, and she may begin to experience nesting behavior as she prepares for the birth of her puppies. It's crucial to continue to monitor the dog's health and provide her with proper nutrition and exercise during this time. The veterinarian may recommend additional testing or monitoring to ensure the health and wellbeing of the mother and her puppies. Please Breed Your French Bulldog Responsibly Breeding French Bulldogs is a complex and challenging process that requires careful consideration and responsible practices. The health and welfare of the dogs should always be the top priority, and breeders and pet owners should work closely with a veterinarian or experienced breeder to ensure that the breeding process is done safely and ethically. Breeding French Bulldogs can be a rewarding experience, but it's crucial to approach it with caution and responsibility. Overbreeding, breeding for profit or for the sole purpose of producing exotic colors, and engaging in unethical breeding practices can all have negative consequences for the health and wellbeing of the dogs involved. It's important to prioritize the health and wellbeing of the dogs above all else and to ensure that they receive proper nutrition, exercise, and veterinary care throughout their lives. By working with responsible breeders and veterinarians and by following ethical breeding practices, we can help to ensure a healthy and happy future for French Bulldogs and other breeds of dogs. Final Thoughts French Bulldogs are a popular breed of dog that many people are interested in owning. This is due to their popularity and the high demand for these dogs. If you're on a budget, you may want to consider adopting a Frenchton, which is a crossbreed between a French Bulldog and a Boston Terrier. These dogs can be just as cute and playful as purebred Frenchies, but may be more affordable. It's also important to note that French Bulldogs often require c-sections to give birth, as their puppies have large heads and broad shoulders that make natural delivery difficult. This can add to the cost of owning a French Bulldog, as c-sections can be expensive and require careful monitoring and recovery. If you're considering getting a French Bulldog or any other dog breed, it's important to do your research and be prepared for the responsibilities of dog ownership. This includes providing proper care and training for your dog, as well as ensuring that you can afford any medical expenses that may arise. Keep in mind that there are many other dog breeds to choose from, each with their own unique characteristics and needs. Consider researching other breeds that may be a better fit for your lifestyle and budget before making a decision. Get more expert advice on pet-parenting by visiting the Off Leash blog at TryFi. Ultrasound Widely used in all sorts of animals including humans , an ultrasound is the fastest way for a vet to get a clear idea of how many puppies mama has in utero. This can be done as early as 3 weeks into the pregnancy itself. This is often the first look into how many puppies they can sell for breeders. X-Ray For a clearer picture, an x-ray can also be used to get a set idea of how many pups are in her womb. Since a mom could abort or have a miscarriage of one puppy early in her pregnancy, this x-ray also confirms that she still has the number she had at the 3-week mark. Whichever method is used for viewing and counting the puppies, remember that these are estimates. As well, not all French Bulldog puppies make it through the first shaky few days, even with the most advanced medical help available. Nothing is certain certain when it comes to the size of a French Bulldog litter, just as nothing is certain when it comes to human pregnancies. How to predict a French Bulldog litter size When picking the right mama to impregnate, breeders often look at a few traits to estimate and determine the size of the litter. Size The size of the mama-to-be will be a huge factor in her pregnancy. Health The health of both French Bulldog parents is also an important factor. Nutrition Much the same as health, nutrition will also be a key role. French Bulldogs need a very specific diet, especially when they are pregnant. However, those genes will also determine the size of the litter and the overall litter health. This is why proper paperwork can go a long way to helping determine the size of the litter as well as genetic factors for Frenchie puppy litters. Small litters of Frenchie puppies While the average litter of puppies is 3, some litters can be smaller with only 1 or 2 puppies. This is not a red flag or cause for concern, though it could be happening due to a few factors. The first cause could be as simple as her age. If a French Bulldog is under the age of 2, she is still thought to be too young to have successful pregnancies. Since pregnancy is very hard on even the strongest Frenchie mom, a young one can have smaller litters with plenty of complications that put puppies at risk. Once they are over the age of two, they reach full maturity and can produce full litters. Generally speaking, Frenchie breeds are very closely monitored. They are also high-risk dogs regarding health complications, particularly during pregnancies. Litters between puppies will always end up with better health and longevity than those litters that are above average. Large litters of Frenchie puppies Just like pregnancies can be below the average of 3 or 4 puppies, they can also be above the average with 5 or even 6 puppies. Large litters often happen as a result of an unethical breeder more on that in a moment and should make you raise a red flag when searching. Large litters bring with them quite a few concerns in health and safety all around. Puppies who are in larger litters will quite often be at-risk before and immediately after birth for malnourishment. There is only so much energy that a mom can give to her puppies during gestation and through milk after birth. The more puppies she has, the more they will require from her, which can lead to malnourished, underweight puppies. Having a large litter can also put more strain and stress on the mother, often giving her health problems and difficulties in her future pregnancies. The truth of the matter is that large litters offer the best financial payout. After all, 5 puppies pay better than 3, right? However, this larger litter also puts more strain on the mom and more likely creates puppies that will be saddled with health problems down the road. A large litter, outside of the flukes and medical miracles, is a sign of an irresponsible breeder. Similarly, Frenchie moms should be at least 2 years of age and average about 3 or 4 pregnancies throughout her life. If you are searching for Frenchie moms and find a series of potential mothers that have 5 or 6 puppies. Responsible breeders will only promise or support 3 or 4 puppies per litter and will happily explain why. This would be a sure sign of a puppy mill. A puppy mill is quite literally a factory set-up for puppies. Various French Bulldog mothers simply pump out litter after litter, and their puppies are sold at high prices by breeders whose only focus is money. These dogs are quite often traumatized and abused, amongst other immoral practices. Use litter size to determine the right breeders Any breeder that is in it for the right reasons will be aware of the size of Frenchie litters and their limits. While it seems so simple when it comes to the number of puppies in the litter, that very number can tell you a whole lot about a breeder and their practices. Use that to help you find the right one. Not only will it feel better than unknowingly supporting a puppy mill, but it will also end up giving you a much healthier, stronger, and better puppy! Due to this popularity, you may want to breed your French Bulldog to save some bucks since they are expensive. However, the question in your mind will be, "How many puppies can French bulldogs have? Female French Bulldogs can have a maximum of four litters in their lifetime, translating to 12 puppies. Therefore, a female French Bulldog will have 12 puppies before they are considered old to carry more. In the rest of this article, I'll discuss litters as they relate to French Bulldog breeding and the number of puppies. I will also cover the factors that limit a French Bulldog's ability to reproduce. Keep reading to learn more. A French Bulldog will typically have three puppies on average in a litter. This is a low number compared to other dog breeds like Golden Retrievers, which usually have more than eight puppies in a litter. It's worth mentioning that although rare, French Bulldogs can have up to eight puppies in a litter. However, this is considered unsafe owing to the French Bulldog's body size and shape. This means that a French Bulldog carrying more than four puppies at a time is in danger of dying from pregnancy-related complications. As a Frenchie parent, you're interested in knowing how many puppies your Frenchie can have over their lifetime. The number of puppies a Frenchie can have in a lifetime depends on the number of litters. A French Bulldog can have a maximum of four litters in its lifetime. Each of these litters will have an average of three puppies, translating to .Thus, you can expect your Frenchie to give you approximately 12 puppies in her lifetime. It's essential to consider the reproductive age when figuring out the number of pups your Frenchie can have in a lifetime. Most dog breeds, Frenchies included, reach reproductive maturity at six to nine months. Although French Bulldog females usually have their first heat as early as four months old, it's not advisable to breed the dog this early. Breeding a French Bulldog on her first heat exposes her to: Stunted growth Premature aging Complications during pregnancy and birth Even when a French Bulldog has had multiple litters, you should only breed her after two years. For safe delivery and recovery, veterinarians advise that the breeding period should not exceed eight years. However, some breeders inseminate their dogs after eight years to get more puppies. For this reason, knowing the factors that affect litter size will help you decide when to breed your Frenchie. The following are the main factors that affect litter size in French Bulldogs: Hormone Imbalance Frenchie females with a hormone imbalance will often undergo false pregnancies. In most cases, the dog will behave like she is pregnant even though there isn't any puppy inside her. Hypothyroidism is a hormonal imbalance problem in dogs that causes weight gain, lethargy, and depression. In extreme cases, it can cause abortion or decreased litter size in females. Age The older your French Bulldog gets, the smaller the litter size. Dogs bred between two and five years have larger litters because they are still young with more active reproductive hormones. By the time the dog is six years old, the litter size decreases significantly as the reproductive hormones become less active. Genetics Genetics play a role in determining your dog's ability to have puppies at any point in its lifetime. If both parents have a small litter size, you'll most likely have fewer puppies from your Frenchie mom. A mother with a bigger and broader family tree will have bigger litters. Therefore, you're more likely to get larger Frenchie pups if the mom comes from a family of bigger French Bulldogs. Health Healthy dogs can carry healthier and larger puppy litters. For example, your Frenchie can have a healthier and bigger litter if she has good nutrition. That's why it's essential to feed the dog with high-quality pet food throughout pregnancy. You may have questions like: When is the right time to breed my Frenchie? What are the steps to take in preparing for this process? What should I expect when giving birth? To make the experience smooth, here are the two crucial steps to follow: Artificial Insemination Apart from the hassles of looking for an appropriate and healthy stud dog, the narrow hips of French Bulldogs make natural mating hard. As a result, most Frenchie parents rely on artificial insemination. You must get a canine veterinarian to draw sperm from the stud dog and insert it into the female's reproductive tract. This process is usually done two to three times for positive results. The veterinarian will also be in charge of monitoring the pregnancy's progress. Therefore, you must keep in touch with your veterinarian to monitor the dog's progress and prepare for labor. French Bulldogs have a gestation period of approximately 63 days. The day your Frenchie goes into labor will be significantly different for each dog. Besides being responsible for the C-section procedure, your vet will guide you on what to expect during this period. Furthermore, they will take you through how to deal with any complications that may arise after delivery. It's worth mentioning that taking your Frenchie mom through natural birthing can expose them to dystocia. Unfortunately, 1. Factors That Limit a French Bulldog's Reproductive Ability Two to four puppies in a litter is a low number compared to other dog breeds. Why do French Bulldogs have such a small litter size? Read on to find out the limiting factors. Physical Conformation The physical nature of French Bulldogs makes it challenging for them to reproduce in large numbers. French Bulldogs have narrow hips. Although these hips make the dog beautiful, they hinder natural mating. This explains why these dogs are bred through artificial insemination. It's also hard for French Bulldogs to birth naturally due to their large heads. Consequently, most French Bulldogs undergo cesarean section C-section procedures. Due to their large heads, whelping your Frenchie mom naturally is a risky affair that can lead to: The pups getting stuck in the birth canal The mother suffering from complications such as hemorrhage or uterine rupture Injuring the pups Therefore, although costly and risky, C-section is the most humane option for helping your Frenchie canine give birth. Brachycephalic Breed Frenchies are among the brachycephalic dog breeds. Brachycephalic dog breeds have short nostrils and flattened muzzles with longer bottom jaws than the top ones. Due to their squished face, these dogs have difficulty breathing and cooling. This makes them prone to overheating. Moreover, the squished face exposes most of these dogs to Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS. This syndrome makes breathing a struggle, leading to challenges in carrying pregnancies and giving birth. Prenatal Care for a French Bulldog Your Frenchie's prenatal care should start as soon as she is pregnant. Here are some key areas to focus on: Diet Your dog needs a high-quality diet to support her pregnancy. A healthy, natural diet will strengthen the dog's body, allowing it to accommodate the mom and pups. Pregnant dogs need the following nutrients : Calcium: 1 to 1. Indeed, they have inspired an entire fashion industry of French Bulldog clothing, accessories, and even jewelry. That popularity has made an already expensive breed even more valuable. But why do Frenchies cost so much in the first place? The answer lies in their limited ability to reproduce. The average French Bulldog litter consists of 3 puppies. Although some have successfully carried and birthed up to 7 pups, that happens very rarely. In comparison, the average Golden Retriever produces 8 puppies in a litter. Beagles, for example, typically give birth to 6 puppies at a time while pugs produce 5 pups in an average litter. Frenchies typically carry up to 4 litters in their lifetime. Although their average life expectancy is around 12 years old, they can only breed safely between 2 and 8 years old. That limitation affects the number of Frenchie puppies born each year, which directly impacts the value of the breed. Canadian Moto French Bulldogs wearing Frenchie harnesses. French Bulldogs have difficulty reproducing in large numbers because of their physical conformation. Although organizations like the American Kennel Club and the French Bull Dog Club of America see to it that breed standards are upheld, even the healthiest Frenchies will have trouble breeding naturally and copiously. One of the biggest reproductive concerns in French Bulldogs is their narrow hips. French Bulldogs also have trouble birthing naturally. The large heads that are so often perfectly adorned with Frenchie jewelry make a caesarean section necessary. Additionally, the French Bulldog is among the brachycephalic breeds that have breathing issues simply because of their short muzzles and flat faces. Because of this and the way their bodies are built, pregnancy and birthing can be too stressful on their bodies and could become fatal. The limited number of puppies a Frenchie can produce in her lifetime is one of the biggest reasons why this breed is so expensive. And because fewer puppies mean an even smaller probability of producing rare-colored French Bulldogs, the value of specific pedigrees are even higher. For most of us, that cost means settling for getting our Frenchie fix on social media where canine celebrities provide endless joy as they show off the latest in French Bulldog fashion. Shopping French bulldogs are a popular breed loved by many. However, certain factors such as the age and health of the mother can impact litter size. How many French bulldog puppies are born in a litter? The average litter size of French bulldogs is small compared to other breeds, with usually only puppies born in a litter. These puppies are typically born between eight and ten weeks old and weigh around two to three pounds at birth. Within the first few hours, French bulldog puppies can stand and walk, and they will nurse for around twelve to fourteen hours. It is recommended that French bulldog puppies are spayed or neutered at six to eight months old. Keeping these facts in mind will help owners prepare for the arrival of these adorable pups. Typically, French bulldog puppies are born in February or March and weigh around pounds at birth. Taking them for short walks, playing fetch, or allowing them to run around in a safe area can help keep them healthy and happy. By following these steps, you can ensure that your French bulldog puppies grow up to be healthy and happy dogs. Health concerns for French bulldogs puppies French bulldogs are prone to various health concerns, including hip dysplasia, bloat, seizures, skin allergies, eye problems, and ear infections. Unfortunately, French bulldog puppies are born with a high mortality rate. Providing your pup with proper nutrition and regular exercise can also help prevent health issues from arising. It is always best to consult with a veterinarian in case you suspect any health issues. They will be able to provide the necessary medications and guide you through the process of caring for French bulldogs puppies. Taking good care of your puppy from an early age can go a long way in ensuring they grow up healthy and happy. What are the risks associated with French bulldog breeding? French bulldogs generally give birth to puppies per litter, making them a popular breed for those looking to start breeding. However, French bulldog breeding comes with its own set of risks, including health problems and even death in the puppies. Raising French bulldog puppies can also be challenging due to their temperament and specific needs. They require extensive training and socialization before they are ready to be placed with a new family. Additionally, French bulldogs need a lot of daily exercise which can be difficult if you live in an urban area. It is important to take all these factors into consideration before deciding to breed a French bulldog or adopt one as a pet. Boxer 6 — 8 This table shows that breeds like Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds tend to have larger litters compared to Frenchies. Variations Based on Specific Factors Just like people, every Frenchie is unique and various factors can influence the total number of puppies in each litter. Here are some key factors: Health: As mentioned earlier, a healthy mother will usually have a larger litter compared to one with health problems. Age: The age of the mother can also impact the size of her litter. Older dogs 5 years and exceeding may have fewer puppies than younger ones. Genetics: Some dogs naturally produce more offspring due to their genetic makeup. But just how many puppies do French bulldogs have? The range of puppies in a French bulldog litter can vary widely. You might be wondering why that is. Frenchie Litter Sizes: The Basics Typically, a female french bulldog will give birth to three or four puppies in a single litter. Some litters may have as few as two puppies while others could boast up to five or six. So what causes these variations? Several factors come into play: Genetics: Just like human families where some have twins or triplets more commonly than others, some dog breeds are predisposed to having large litters. Age: Younger female dogs 17 months or younger tend to have smaller litters compared to their older counterparts. Health: A healthy mother equals healthy pups! Dogs with good overall health and nutrition may produce larger litters. But wait! Are there instances when the number of French bulldog puppies goes beyond the typical range? Surgical insemination is exactly as it sounds. They go in and place the semen right on the eggs. This is an invasive surgery and requires 2 week recovery time like a spay would. Selective Breeding: Breeders sometimes selectively breed dogs with a history of large litters in hopes of replicating the result. Large litters can pose risks for both mother and pups such as difficult labor, higher risk for congenital defects, less attention per puppy. I whelped a litter for a friend. The dog had previously had a litter of 3 perfect puppies in her first litter. The second litter, conceived by surgical insemination, was 10 puppies, with a cocktail of problems, heart murmurs and other defects that caused failure to thrive. I think 6 of the 10 puppies made it. The parent paring was exactly the same, but insemination method was different. Make sure your females are getting adequate nutrition from the moment she completes her first breeding through the first 30 days. These dogs are known for their brachycephalic short-nosed features, which can lead to health concerns during pregnancy and birth. A responsible breeder understands that these adorable pups are prone to complications such as dystocia, or difficult labor, often requiring veterinary intervention like C-sections. Great General Health is Imperative Other factors such as vaginitis and bladder infections are common but if left untreated can cause problems for pups as well if bacteria travels up into the uterus. Before Portia was bred in she had some vaginitis. After c section, I was told the placentas on 2 of the 3 pups were dark green and just gross. General Daily Health is Extremely Important French bulldogs are more susceptible than other breeds to things like pancreatitis and yes pancreatitis can cause a dogs pregnancy to fail, along with other serious health issues such as stroke, organ failures, and death. When breeding you need to make sure your dog is in tip top shape not only to carry her pups but to also produce healthy pups. Why would you want it any other way anyway?! They may need a totally different protein, different fat content, different feeding schedule. Make sure your dogs are getting the proper amount of exercise as well. An underweight dog can be just as sick as an over weight dog as well with nutrient deficiencies, low bone density, and more. These things pass on to puppies, why take that chance. Why put that on a pup and new owner knowingly? In alone I have seen 3 dogs get diagnosed with pancreatitis, one of which is severely overweight. Only 1 of the 3 dogs had a successful pregnancy. Litter size plays a significant role in the well-being of both mother and pups. On the flip side, too small a litter might indicate underlying health issues. Breeders need to strike that balance — not too big, not too small — just right! In contrast, irresponsible breeders might overlook these risks for quick profit — leaving unsuspecting new owners grappling with hefty vet bills down the line. As mentioned above health is the most important factor. Their large heads and narrow hips make natural birth a challenge. Infections, blood loss, and anesthesia complications are some risks associated with cesarean sections. Newborn Frenchies may face difficulties such as low body temperature or breathing problems post-surgery. Believe it or not, anesthesia actually affects the pups as well. You need to find an experienced reproductive veterinarian who works with french bulldogs regularly. Knowing the proper dosage of anesthesia is extremely important for both mom and puppies. Too much can hurt both and cause puppies to be slow to wake or not wake at all. Pregnancy itself is taxing on their bodies due to potential complications like eclampsia or dystocia. Here are some health issues that can arise from cesarean sections: Infection: Surgical sites may become infected if not properly cared for. Hemorrhage: Blood loss during surgery is common but can lead to severe problems if excessive. Anesthesia complications: Adverse reactions to anesthesia can occur during or after surgery. Anesthesia Reaction- muscle contractions, she was fine but it did freak me out. A call to my vet confirmed it was only from anesthesia, and not to worry This Photo is minor compared to some of the incision problems I have seen on facebook. Sutures need to be on the inside with sutures or vet bond on the outside. Also, not just 1 long single string of sutures. The weight of the body is too much for one string. Sometimes the pups have so much spit it disrupts the glue seal. This one was a quick easy fix, but if you notice anything wrong with the incision site, call your vet immediately. Breathing problems: Puppies might have difficulty breathing post-surgery due to fluid in their lungs. During the last c section we had 1 pup that was slow to wake due to the cold. Once he was brought to proper temp, everything was fine and he is thriving! Below is a photo of him now! Reproductive Limitations of a French Bulldog Physical Constraints and Fertility French Bulldogs, adored for their compact size and expressive faces, face significant reproductive health challenges due to their unique physical attributes. The narrow hips characteristic of the breed often lead to problems during the birthing processes. This reduced fertility is primarily why artificial insemination and cesarean sections are commonly practiced. As such, many breeders resort to artificial insemination. Frequency of Litters The frequency at which a female French Bulldog can safely have litters is another factor that impacts their reproductive system. Rest Periods: Some people claim having a rest period between litters is necessary. With my vets permission, I have not done this. Portia, one of our smaller females, has more time in between heats. This past heat took 10 months to come back around. The average litter size? Usually around pups. But it can range from 1 to even 8 in some cases! On extreme rarity I have seen .Risks like birthing complications are common due to their unique physique, often necessitating C-sections for safer deliveries. They have their reproductive limitations which should be respected for their health and welfare. So there you have it! On average, a French Bulldog will have puppies per litter. Q2: How often can a French Bulldog safely have litters? Q3: Why do many French Bulldogs require C-sections for delivery? French Bulldogs often require C-sections due to their narrow hips which can complicate natural birth. X ray will give you the best chances of predicting and knowing litter size. Q5: Are there risks involved in breeding French Bulldogs? Yes, there are risks such as birthing complications which may require veterinary intervention like C-sections. Unlike people though, an expectant dog mum-to-be has her work cut out for her, as she rarely, if ever, gives birth to a single puppy. The number of puppies that a bitch has is dependent on several factors, namely size the bigger the breed of dog, the more puppies they tend to have in a single litter and the physical characteristics of a breed. There are, however, no absolutes in nature, which means that the number of puppies that a French Bulldog has per litter can vary. The breed has a higher than average possibility of developing a condition called dystocia, which is similar to a breech birth in humans, but far more dangerous. French Bulldogs are up to twenty percent more likely to suffer from dystocia during pregnancy, which is one of the main reasons why your veterinarian will suggest that you opt for a C-section for your Frenchie. Giving birth is just as hard for a dog as it is for a human, and during and after the birth, your Frenchie will need to breathe harder and faster in order to ensure that her body has the oxygen it needs to make it through and recover from the trauma of having a litter of pups. For a brachycephalic dog like the Frenchie, this is much harder than it is for a normal dog and puts the mother at a much greater risk of cardiac arrest, which again is why most veterinarians will suggest that the safest option for any Frenchie mother is always a C-Section. The procedure also carries a risk to the puppies and can put their lives in danger as well, so the fewer C-sections that your dog has to endure, the more likely she, and her puppies, are to emerge from one unscathed. Which most Frenchies are. Always insist on seeing the paperwork, and the mother dog before you agree to buy a puppy. Before we begin, a word of caution. Most Frenchies tend to reach maturity between eighteen months and two years of age, which is why most breeders tend to let their dogs mate between the ages of two and seven. The typical gestation period the length of a pregnancy for a French Bulldog is between sixty and sixty-three days, and the dog can enter labor at any point during that time. In the first month of her pregnancy, you might notice that your Frenchie starts to become even more affectionate than she already is and that her appetite has increased. Her appetite might start to wane toward the end of the second month, as her body starts to prepare to give birth. Post navigation. Dogs of this nature tend to be smaller, and also have smaller amounts of puppies. And with French bulldog dams the females they have very narrow hips and small body. If a female Frenchie does have a large litter of over 3, there can be health implications for the puppies. They will probably be underweight, with the weaker ones in the litter struggling to get the milk they need during the first few weeks of being born. How many times a year can a French bulldog have puppies? How many litters can a French bulldog have in a year? They should not have any more than 1 litter a year, and most preferably every other year. Because they are delivered via C-section, the female needs time to recover and recuperate, so anything intensive is just cruel and designed to make money. For more information on Frenchie C-sections, click here. How many litters can a French bulldog have? Most female Frenchies have around 4 litters in total, although I have heard of irresponsible breeders who try to get more from them. This litter size of 4 puppies is quite normal, with the average amount of puppies being 3. If you are thinking about buying a French bulldog puppy, talk to the breeder and find out how many litters she has had. How long is a French bulldog pregnancy? Frenchies very rarely give birth naturally, with most puppies being delivered by C-section. A French bulldog pregnancy the gestation period i. She will typically deliver by Caesarean section and will have on average around 3 puppies in her litter. Frenchie breeders will often use artificial insemination to get their females pregnant, as this breed find it very hard to mate naturally due to their narrow hips. You can read more about how long a Frenchie is pregnant for elsewhere on the website. When people say a dog is in heat, what they actually mean is that they are in their oestrus cycle. It is very similar to when a human female gets a period. When a Frenchie dam is on her oestrus cycle it means she has gone into heat and will accept a mate and could end up getting pregnant. French bulldogs go into heat from the point they reach sexual maturity. The regularity of their oestrus cycles tends to be every 6 months on average but will vary from dog to dog. It can take up to 2 years for a French bulldog to develop regular heat patterns. Female French bulldogs can gain sexual maturity as young as 5 months old. At that point, if they have started to have regular oestrus cycles, they are at risk of getting pregnant. Do French bulldogs always need C-sections? If your French bulldog does have puppies naturally, it can be very dangerous for both the female and the litter. Handy Hint: French Bulldogs mating naturally is a very rare occurrence. It can lead to health risks too. Find out more about why Frenchies should not breed naturally in this new blog post. The last word French bulldogs make for great companions and pets. If you browse other guides on the website, you will see plenty of photos and videos of Claude, our own Frenchie. However, in recent years their popularity has exploded, and this has led to an increase in unscrupulous breeders who use irresponsible methods of breeding. This can result in poor health — read the various health problems that Frenchies are prone to. If you are thinking about buying a Frenchie, please do your research into the breeder before you even consider buying from them.
