These should be dealt with by behavior specialists who can evaluate the individual dog and determine the best behavior modification plan. These abnormal behaviors include aggression to those around the dog, obsessive-compulsive disorders, shutting down, and severe separation anxiety. Why Behavior Problems Develop There is no one reason why some behavior problems occur. Unfortunately, goldens are so popular—the third-popular breed ranked by the American Kennel Club—they are often poorly bred. There are too many back-yard and puppy mill dogs who are more likely to not be the examples of what the breed should be. Jumping on People Golden retrievers usually love everyone and never met a stranger. Goldens are the greeting committee of the dog world. Many dogs want to jump on people when greeting them. The golden can, of course, unintentionally injure someone, knocking them over in his exuberant greeting. Engaging in Destructive Behavior In addition to friendliness, goldens were bred to hunt. They have energy to spare. And they were bred to retrieve and have something in their mouths. They may dig up the garden. Or chew up our furniture. Or they may steal the food on the counter. And the food they eat may be toxic, such as chocolate or raisins. Or they may get a blockage from ingesting a towel or sock. A bored, under-exercised golden can get very creative in meeting his needs. They often need to have something in their mouths. That is, he may constantly try to hold our clothes, arm, or hand in his mouth. Biting is a natural canine behavior. But puppies should be taught bite-inhibition. And it can be dangerous. Someone can be badly bruised or even pulled down. Pulling on the Leash Goldens love to go places and greet all their new admirers. But they want to get there sooner rather than later. Many dogs pull on a leash, but not all are as friendly as goldens are known to be. And they can be lazer-focused on getting where they want to go. Even negative attention is attention. Hyperactivity Some goldens seemingly bounce off the walls. They are like a hurricane passing through the living room. Tables are cleared of bric a brac. Pillows are shredded and on the floor. But your happy golden is furiously wagging his tail, looking for the next item he can use to help expel his excess energy. Separation Anxiety Because of their innate friendly, family-oriented behavior, goldens may suffer from separation anxiety at a higher rate than some other breeds. Their need to be with us can lead to some unwanted behaviors. Dogs with mild separation anxiety may drool, pace, whine, and generally behave in a distressed manner. Dogs with severe separation anxiety may become very destructive. They may try to get out of doors and windows, feverishly digging at door and window frames. They may even severely harm themselves in their attempts to get free. Dogs with separation anxiety may need professional behavioral help. We owe it to our goldens to do all that we can do to meet their natural needs. A bored, untrained, under-exercised, unsupervised golden is going to develop some problem behaviors. Some of the tips below will even help your golden from developing any of the potential problems cited above. I wrote the ways to help fix a problem separately from the problems because it will probably take more than one item to successfully change an unwanted behavior. All of the favorable interactions we have with our goldens also help further our bond with them. Physical Exercise Goldens were bred to hunt. They are highly-energetic dogs. Walks, fetching, jogging, agility, and swimming can all be great ways to physically exercise your golden. A vet check-up is advisable prior to starting any exercise program. Physical exercise can help decrease or eliminate the above-named problems. Of course, you want to exercise your dog enough but not over-tire them. Dogs who have been sufficiently exercised are less likely to jump or engage in destructive activities such as digging or chewing. Also, dogs who are exercised and calm before we leave are less likely to develop separation anxiety. Obedience Training Obedience training helps us communicate with our dogs and informs them what behaviors are desired. So we can teach them to sit before they receive attention. Or to lie down next to us and settle. And we can show him what toys he can put in his mouth rather than destroying items or turning us into his chew toy. Redirection works. And we can teach them to not pull on a leash and to walk on a loose leash. Part of the training should include how to leave your dog alone. This will help prevent separation anxiety from developing. Start with short sessions. Make leaving a happy opportunity—when great things appear. Leave a frozen, stuffed Extreme Kong with him as you leave. If your dog has already shown signs of separation distress, get the help of a qualified behavior specialists. As far as your golden inappropriately seeking attention is concerned, you can ignore your dog. Turn away or get up and leave. But do give him the attention he needs on your terms by calling him over to you occasionally. Pet him. Have him do a command or trick. Praise, pet, and treat. You should also play games with him. Teach him to tug a toy like a rope or long fleece to and give. You can have him play fetch. You can play hide-and-seek where you go and hide and call him to you. I never understood why my Frenchie would stalk me everywhere and not leave my sight. French Bulldogs are known to love being with their human and always chasing them everywhere but there was an extra clinginess I didn't understand. It was extra then when he was just a puppy and it is extra now hasn't changed. When I'm in bed Bluenjy is laying besides me when I go to the kitchen he is right behind me, when I go to the bathroom yes, you guessed it he is there too. No matter where I go he will always be my shadow. Now there is only one exception that he doesn't follow me, that's only when he falls asleep and can't feel my steps on the floor. I usually have to sneak out of the room with light feet because I don't want to wake him up when he is sleeping but he is so in tuned with me he usually does. You thought a normal Frenchie is clingy? You clearly never met mine and I wouldn't change it for the world. He doesn't really greet other household members whenever they come home the same that he does with me. I have had dogs my whole life, I don't recall ever experiencing that with any other dog. I have to make the same point I made in the section above I don't believe it is a Frenchie breed characteristic. Yes, Bluenjy is a Frenchie but I believe both his breed and deafness contributed to him choosing one person who can be his guide in life. I put myself in his position and the way I see it is following 2 people can be confusing. Following one is a lot simpler from his point of view. It is no secret of how much I love Bluenjy however, a lot of owners love their dogs and sometimes they are not favored. So why did Bluenjy choose me to be the one person whom he can count on the most? Is it the unconditional love that I give him? Is it that I held him first when he was 8 weeks old? Is it him being in my lap on the first car ride home tmi next or me being the first person he threw up on? Or is it cause I gave him his first bath? Tried to potty him and teaching him tricks? Is it the funny videos and moments we shared together? As I reflect back we have done everything together from the very first day he came home. It is no wonder or coincidence I am his go to human. He trusts me and I trust him completely and the bond we share is like no other. I attributed them to him being stubborn even though Bluenjy is a people's' pleaser I thought maybe its puppy hood, maybe its his breed, maybe he had "selective hearing" and just did what I asked whenever he felt like doing it. Maybe I was in denial all together. I thought there was no way he is deaf, his breeder would surly inform me if he was. I needed a LOT of red flags before I said that's it this Frenchie can't hear and I need to have his hearing checked at his vet. Took extra long to wake him up. Startle - Bluenjy would jump when someone touched him on the back without seeing them prior to touching. Eye contact - Bluenjy needed my eye contact all the time to know what I wanted. Hand signals - Bluenjy would often look at my hands to see what I am suggesting. Absolutely no head tilting — movement of the ears or anything that suggests those bat ears are nothing but accessories on his head. No barking - this could be different from dog to dog. Bluenjy rarely ever barks. I did train him to bark on demand when he was a puppy and it was extremely difficult to teach him to bark. I sat with him as a puppy showing him the motion of barking with my mouth everyday until he finally understood what I even asked him to do. Everything already mentioned above - extra clinginess. I could hear the nails on the wood floor and the panic in his breathing I had to go downstairs to get him as he didn't know where I was. Bluenjy's back was towards me and he was looking elsewhere, I called him multiple times over and over louder and louder he didn't hear me at all and he was just 2 feet away from me. I finally had to walk in front of him so he would see me. This incident was the first time I knew something was really wrong If your dog is exhibiting any of the above or similar signs don't hesitate call your vet and get your dog's hearing checked. It will save you and your Frenchie a lot of frustration. I discovered my French Bulldog was deaf after he was a year old. We navigated life just fine before I even knew he was deaf, however, knowing it made everything make sense and validated so many scenarios. I was finally able to piece everything together and was able to be sensitive and understanding of his hidden disability. You do not want to ever wake up a deaf dog with a touch ever. We have shared this waking up video with our followers some time ago and this is the best method of waking up Bluenjy. In this video I show my method of waking up my Frenchie. I start with light taps on the floor next to him and calling his name. They can still feel vibrations when you speak so I always do so. Slowly increase the tapping and become louder as you go. This always works like a charm. You don't ever want to wake up a deaf dog abruptly. If your dog doesn't wake up immediately take your time and increase the taps. This is the absolutely the best method to wake deaf dogs up. Do not touch the dog whatsoever. Any abrupt movement could cause panic anxiety or worse, a heart attack. When people see your dog have a disability they would be more mindful in regards to touching your Frenchie without your consent. When purchasing a collar always keep in mind to get one with breakaway buckle. A breakaway collar for Frenchies would ensure the proper fit and that your dog is safe in extreme situations. Even though they can't hear the bell they will learn to get your attention that way. I believe the advice from Maude's mom is incredibly important. To the average person it doesn't make sense to train a deaf Frenchie with a bell because they can't hear, however, if you take a closer deeper thought into this you will realize that a bell replaces a bark in a regular dog that can hear. We already mentioned above that deaf dogs rarely bark and barking is a big part of dog communication so a bell makes a lot of sense. Instead of barking and telling you when they need to go potty they can giggle the bell. Also you can easily locate a pet with a bell which is another plus. Pintsizedbuffalo - I would recommend hand signals. They learn and adjust just like any other dog. You would have to train a dog that can hear so it shouldn't be any different for a deaf Frenchie. I was training Bluenjy with hand signals before even knowing he was deaf. To my surprise it was very easy and he was getting things so fast. With hand signals you have to be consistent. Do the same signal every time you want your do to do the same thing and reward when your dog does it. Dogs that are congenitally deaf since birth do not realize they can't hear, they were like that from the very first day so they don't understand they have a disability. Dogs that are born with this disability are resilient and go through life with the best attitude and without a worry. Dogs that were not born deaf have a harder adjustment and could show frustration or anger at first. They know they were able to hear once and that makes things a little more challenging especially if you have to start re-training your dog in hand signals at an old age. We recommend training your dog with verbal commands as well as hand signals whether your dog hears or not. This will be very helpful in the case that your dog ever becomes deaf one day. I find myself having to explain to people my dog is not growling this is just how he breaths. When a dog is deaf they can at times be extra loud because they can't hear themselves. My Frenchie Bluenjy is extra loud when he eats, gets excited, plays licks his paws sleep or pretty much anything else. This is unrelated to his BOAS which he had the surgery for he will always be loud just because he can't hear his own self and that is totally normal for us. My French Bulldog does not get a hint when another dog is growling at him. He will keep on going towards the dog in a playful manner even though the other dog clearly wants nothing to do with him. This is where your instinct should kick in as a parent. If you see a dangerous situation approaching please remove your dog from that environment as soon as possible. Not everyone will ask you before reaching their hands towards your dog, however, be adamant and be your dog's protective. Have your dog close to you to avoid people touching and scaring your dog. If a person asks first you can tell them your dog is deaf and they need to put their hands for your dog to smell first then it would be safe to pet. There will be times a deaf dog will be confused and that is perfectly normal. Be patient and loving to your pet. Your dog is probably confused in that moment. Give them plenty of love every single day, they will appreciate it and feel secure. We always like to look at the bright side of things, most optimistic people do and I am one of those. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. Pyometra This life-threatening condition is an infection of the uterus in female dogs that have not been spayed. Dogs will often drink more water to compensate for the increase in urination. Pyometra often has other symptoms, such as pus originating from the vulva, fever, lethargy, changes in appetite, and vomiting. Pyometra is fatal if left untreated, due to the infection spreading throughout the body sepsis. Liver Infection Bacterial infection of the liver most commonly caused by infection with Leptospirosis leads to increased urine production and increased thirst. This infection is fatal if left untreated. Leptospirosis is passed through infected rodent urine and is most commonly found in stagnant water puddles or ponds. There is a vaccine that protects dogs against this infection. If your dog has been drinking a lot of water or been recently swimming in a pond or drinking out of rain puddles, and they are not up to date on their Leptospirosis vaccination, get them to a veterinarian as soon as possible for testing and treatment. Dogs will often drink water when they have an upset tummy. Though we are unsure if this is to give them relief or to induce vomiting, it occurs frequently. This can be secondary to many medical issues, including mild inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract gastroenteritis , pancreatitis , inflammatory bowel disease , foreign body obstruction , and cancers. These signs together can be caused by dehydration, allergies, pain, or even behavioral issues, including anxiety , stress, or cognitive dysfunction the dog version of dementia. Dogs that drink a lot of water will often urinate a lot.
